The Denver Film Festival (DFF), produced by Denver Film Society (DFS), announces its first wave of films through its popular sidebar programming. Recognized as one of the nation’s premier film events, the Festival will feature a focus on Spanish cinema, sidebars for CinemaQ, CineLatino, Late Night Showcase, Women+Film, Culinary Cinema and Colorado Spotlight.
Focus On National Cinema: Spain
This year, DFF will be focusing its international spotlight on the country of Spain. “I’ve been wanting to include Spain as our Focus for a long time,” said Denver Film Society Artistic Director, Brit Withey. “For more than 20 years we’ve been calling attention to one specific country out of the 40-plus that make up each festival program. Spain has been a bridesmaid in this process for many, many years and we’re thrilled to finally give her the spotlight. The films in this section are diverse in tone and substance, varying from deeply serious to dead sexy.”
First announced film in the Focus On National Cinema: Spain:
The Shepherd, directed by Jonathan Cenzual Burley
In this timely story of one man’s struggle to preserve his traditions in a rapidly changing world, Anslemo’s quiet life on the Spanish plains is turned upside down when he’s confronted by developers who will go to any lengths to take over his land.
CinemaQ:
DFS focuses year-round on queer voices, queer visions and queer lives through the CinemaQ programming and Festival. This year’s CinemaQ sidebar of DFF39 will highlight the best in films that reveal the LGBTQ rainbow from every angle, including documentaries and narratives.
First announced film in the CinemaQ sidebar:
Growing Up Coy, directed by Eric Juhola
Meet the Mathises, a Colorado family whose four-year-old self-identifies as a girl, though born a boy. When Coy is forced to use the boys’ bathroom at school, they’re spurred to take legal action. This documentary follows their struggle all the way to the Supreme Court.
CineLatino:
As a nod to the popularity of one our newest mini-festivals, the DFF39 programming team assembles some of the year’s most anticipated films from Mexico, Central and South America to celebrate the diversity of Latino culture through cinema.
First announced film in the CineLatino sidebar:
Warehoused, directed by Jack Zagha Kababie
Before Mr. Lino retires from his warehouse job of 39 years, he must train young Nin on the finer points of the position. But the yawning generation gap between them appears at every turn of this an absurdist Mexican dramedy.
Late Night Showcase:
Experience the dark side of cinema, from horror to oddball sci-fi, the Late Night Showcase is for the brave night-owl looking for outlier fare. Midnight cult flicks mixed with arthouse shockers offer a trip to the bizarre.
First announced film in the Late Night Showcase:
We Are The Flesh, directed by Emiliano Rocha Minter
In this post-apocalyptic arthouse shocker from Mexico, a brother and sister meet a depraved derelict who offers them shelter—at a twisted price. Their lives will never be the same as all taboos are broken.
Women+Film:
Women+Film is a year-round partnership between DFS and the Women+Film organization, formed not only to celebrate the art and accomplishments of women filmmakers around the world, but also to bring together audiences and community leaders to shine a spotlight on social issues through cinema.
First announced film in the Women+Film sidebar:
Jackson, directed by Maisie Crow
Based in Jackson, Mississippi, this gripping documentary delves into the conflict between religious freedom and reproductive rights in the Deep South. As the last-standing abortion clinic in the state is threatened with closure, prominent leaders of the pro-life and pro-choice movements come to a head.
Culinary Cinema:
In partnership with the Colorado Restaurant Association and Southern Wine & Spirits, Culinary Cinema brings the best food focused films to DFF39. Screenings are combined with an event featuring food and drink from a restaurant or caterer who attempts to pair their reception to the themes of the film.
First announced film in the Culinary Cinema sidebar:
Bugs, directed by Andreas Johnson
Equal parts culinary documentary, political conversation starter and travelogue, filmmaker Andreas Johnsen’s absorbing documentary sets out to unearth the role bugs will play in the future of agriculture and to break down the cultural barriers to keeping insects off our plates.
Colorado Spotlight:
DFS offers a robust series of programming to support and highlight filmmaking in Colorado. DFF39 will showcase a number of films made in Colorado, and will culminate with the TRUE GRIT Award, which will be given to one Colorado produced film.
First announced film in the Colorado Spotlight:
Actor Martinez, directed by Mike Ott & Nathan Silver
True story: regular Festival guests Nathan Silver and Mike Ott met volunteer Arthur Martinez two years ago in the Filmmaker Lounge. Over drinks, they decided to make a film together. The result is a startling, genre-bending investigation into the creative process and the motives behind it.
DFF39 will present more than 200 titles among local, national and international independent films, industry panels, workshops, achievement awards and tributes. Following the huge success of the last two events, diversity champions TriForce Creative Network are holding their third WriterSlam competition later this year. The event, which attracts over 1000 entries, will take place at St James’s Theatre on Monday 14th November.
The TCN have been working for over a decade on increasing diversity both on screen and behind the camera with a focus on generating significant and lasting improvement within the industry.
Budding TV drama writers are invited to submit a synopsis and 10-15 pages of script to WriterSlam. Five finalists will be chosen by the TCN to take part in a writer’s workshop, with the final script extracts performed for an audience of leading industry figures on 14th November. Previous WriterSlam participants have enjoyed great success including paid development commissions with ITV, Tiger Aspect and BBC Radio 4, mentoring placements with ITV, Tiger Aspect, Hat Trick and TriForce Productions, and one writer has been commissioned to write an episode of Casualty.
The winning writer of this year’s event will receive a paid development commission from TriForce Productions, culminating in an industry table read in Spring 2017 supported by Sky Drama.
The runner up will receive a guaranteed place on the BBC’s Introduction to Continuing Drama workshop – their invite only workshop for writers hoping to write for the BBC’s award winning continuing dramas; Holby City, Casualty, Doctors and Eastenders. One of last year’s WriterSlam winners, Tom Mackay, has gone on to write for BBC’s Casualty.
All five finalists will have their work showcased in front of an industry panel, which will include representatives from the BBC, Channel 4, Sky and TriForce Productions.
Previous finalist Lee Coan said “WriterSlam really felt like a last chance saloon for me to get my work noticed. It has been a very busy year since taking part. On top of working with ITV, I acquired a top agent and have been put in touch with some fantastic independent production companies. Doors opened, that were previously very much locked!”
Submissions are open from Monday 19th September until Sunday 9th October. To find out more and for details on how to submit, go to http://thetcn.com/writerslam/
TriForce also runs an acclaimed and established Short Film Festival to support the careers of film directors, producers, below the line talent and screenwriters working in the short independent film sector and to increase diversity and collaboration in short film production. Its aim is to find and acknowledge innovative storytelling and connect filmmakers and industry professionals.

Trash Fire
Introduction and post screening Q&A with filmmaker Richard Bates, Jr.
“TRASH FIRE starts in a dark, desperate place and only gets darker and more desperate. It will leave you shaken, but the visceral experience of it is exhilarating. Four out of five skulls” – BloodyDisgusting Richard Bates Jr.(EXCISION, SUBURBAN GOTHIC, Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival favorites) returns with another brilliantly twisted and dark story of familial love. At a relationship crossroads, Isabelle (Angela Trimbur, THE FINAL GIRLS) insists she and her boyfriend, Owen (Adrian Grenier, ENTOURAGE), go on a road trip to meet his family—his unbearably burned sister Pearl (AnnaLynne McCord, EXCISION) and nasty grandmother Violet (Fionnula Flanagan, THE GUARD, THE OTHERS). As a tangled web of secrets, lies, and murder unfolds, Bates masterfully pulls off a genre-subverting gut-punching final act that will leave you astonished. Neither Heaven Nor Earth
“It’s effective, spooky and moves beyond the clichés of combat into troubling political and metaphysical territory.” – A.O. Scott, New York Times Afghanistan 2014. As the withdrawal of French troops approaches, Captain Antares Bonassieu (Jérémie Renier, BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF, L’ENFANT, SAINT LAURENT) and his squad have been assigned a surveillance mission in a remote valley of Wakhan, on the border of Pakistan. Despite the troops’ determination, control of the secluded valley slowly falls out of their hands. One dark night, soldiers begin to mysteriously disappear. In his first feature, director Clément Cogitore transforms the dusty Afghan landscape into a setting for a breathtaking metaphysical thriller, recalling the eerie mystery of PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK and the paranoid horror of John Carpenter’s THE THING. A critical success at Cannes, NEITHER HEAVEN NOR HELL is a contemporary ghost story that conveys the madness of war with seething pressure and unrelenting terror. In a quest across dark dimensions, Reggie is reunited with brothers Mike (A. Michael Baldwin) and Jody (Bill Thornbury) for one last time. The Eyes of My Mother
“A Sundance Next standout, Nicolas Pesce's impressive, highly original horror fable is the stuff of very beautiful nightmares.” – Variety In their secluded farmhouse, a former surgeon teaches her daughter, Francisca, to understand anatomy and be unfazed by death. One afternoon, a mysterious visitor shatters the idyll of Francisca's family life, deeply traumatizing the young girl, but also awakening some unique curiosities. Though she clings to her increasingly reticent father, Francisca's loneliness and scarred nature converge years later when her longing to connect with the world around her takes on a distinctly dark form. Shot in crisp black and white, the haunting, and at times disturbing, visual compositions of THE EYES OF MY MOTHER evoke its protagonist's isolation and illuminate her deeply unbalanced worldview. My Father Die
“The swamp-thing progeny of BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD and THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (with a little CAPE FEAR thrown in), MY FATHER DIE offers blood-and-thunder Southern-gothic excess both tempered and heightened by vivid directorial texturing.” –Variety In this confident feature debut from Sean Brosnan (son of Pierce Brosnan, who produces), Joe Anderson (ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, HANNIBAL) stars as Asher, a boy left deaf and dumb at the age of 12 after an attack by his father, Ivan (Gary Stretch) leaves his brother dead. Ten years later, Asher is still training to avenge his brother's murder, and his father is rotting behind bars. But when Ivan is unexpectedly released, Asher's plans for revenge kick in. What starts as a simple revenge tale quickly turns into a horrific exploitation odyssey that channels Jeremy Saulnier's BLUE RUIN by way of Ted Kotcheff's Australian classic WAKE IN FRIGHT. “An experience you won’t forget in a hurry, MY FATHER DIE is a beautiful-looking slice of brutality and wanton destruction.” – Dread Central DIR/SCR Sean Brosnan; PROD Daniel J. The High Coast International Film Festival is a three day event - Friday through Sunday - held in the High Coast in North of Sweden focusing on Independent Film.
The core foundation and principle for the Film Festival itself and for the Film Program we put together is : "Personal Artistic Expression through the Medium of Film". There are no special sections for contemporary relevant films or attention to any special topics - Film as an Artform, as a means to express and artisically investigate is what puts the Film Program together.
Our aim is that - circling around the participating films - Film makers, Film Institutes and Film Organizations that screen, produce and distribute meet and do so under comfortable and beautiful circumstances which is exactly what a Film Festival located in the Countryside in North Sweden offers.
We thefore invite and pay for accomodation for every selected Film maker as well as invitied Film Institutions and Film Organizations.
For both Film makers and Film Organizations we highly recomend you to come - for the Film Makers you have a unique opportunity to meet with the Regional Film Institutions and Film Organizations.
For Film Organizations you are looking at a opporturnity for a Film weekend together with representatives from other Institutions in the Region as well as International Film Directors that have traveled from all around the world for this particular event. You'll spend a weekend on a most special Hotel in beautiful High Coast watching Films on a big screen put up solely for this event.
For more information about the Festival - Past Edition, This years open call for submissions, more details about our Philosphy and background - please take a look around our website!
Last summer, leading Rotterdam arts institutions International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), Kunsthal Rotterdam and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen presented a multidisciplinary programme featuring exceptional films and exhibitions by internationally renowned artists in and around Rotterdam’s Museumpark. With a total of almost 125,000 visits the forecasts were more than exceeded, meaning that this pilot edition of Rotterdam Xpanded can justly be called a success.
From 18 June to 18 September IFFR, Kunsthal Rotterdam and Museum Van Beuningen presented a strong programme with international allure in the Museumpark in Rotterdam. This included the impressive installation Notion motion (2005) by Danish-Icelandic maker Olafur Eliasson (1967) in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, for which the museum’s Bodonzaal was modified and 20,562 litres of water was used. Kunsthal Rotterdam presented almost one hundred paintings, drawings and pastels by world-famous Colombian artist Fernando Botero (1932) in the exhibition Botero: Celebrate Life!, and during IFFR White Nights IFFR used short films to highlight the talent entering Europe through the flow of refugees.
Fantastic results
The aim of the pilot edition was to motivate more Dutch and international visitors to visit Rotterdam: the target was 20,000 more visits than last summer, distributed across the three institutions. With a total of almost 125,000 visits as compared to 70,000 visits in the same period in 2015, this goal was more than achieved. The number of Dutch visitors from outside of Rotterdam increased both as a percentage and in absolute terms. In addition, the event drew a more diverse audience, both in terms of origin and age.
The future of Rotterdam Xpanded
These great results have strengthened even further the resolve of the initiators to continue. Culture is an essential factor in maintaining the quality of life in a city; it also works as a magnet for tourists and creates a favourable climate for businesses and start-ups. The success of this pilot proves that, with a shared vision and the strength and effectiveness that come from the combination of culture-city council-business community, Rotterdam Xpanded has huge potential and can act as a catalyst for tourism in the city. However, partners are needed in order to lift the initiative to a higher level (also internationally). Finding these partners will be the next step on the road to a successful, longer-term cultural programme that has an economic impact on both the city and its businesses going forward.
International Antalya Film Festival, celebrating 53rd year this year, takes place in the ancient city of Antalya which is known for feasts, celebrations and festivals for 2,500 years.
It was first launched in 1964 and it became the most important and iconic cinematic event in Turkey. Its famous statuette is inspired from the most beautiful woman of the mythology; Venus symbol of beauty, love, prosperity, fertility and femininity. Its second inspiration comes from Antalya’s most valuable product and the city’s symbol; an orange. During the design phase, Antalya’s iconic symbol, a golden “orange” was placed in the hands of Venus. Thus, the award led to the festival and the festival led to the award as Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival started. In 2005, the festival added the title “International” before its name.
After half a century, it was decided for the award, which moved away from its original Golden Orange design of 1964 and was re-interpreted in various ways, to be reverted back to its original form. 51st International Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival’s motto, “From Tradition to the Future” also emphasized the change in the award. The award, which was redesigned faithfully to its original by a famous Turkish jewelry firm URART, embraced the festival’s tradition and was designed in two forms, one being national and the other one being international.
Last year, the festival management dropped “Golden Orange” from the name to further improve the reputation of the festival and decided to proceed as “International Antalya Film Festival” from the year 52 onwards.
Inspired from Venus, Golden Orange award continues to carry the tradition to the future by depending on its roots in these lands and its strength coming from cinema.
