So sad we lost our friend Donald Ranvaud, in jury duty at FFM 40, he was 62 and a great producer

A friend passed away...I remember when we were both 60 in Cannes having fun in front of Salle du 60ème... See the photo!
I was so happy to see him in Montreal, (he arrived a bit late and missed the grand opening of the 40th edition of Serge Losique's Festival). British film producer Donald Ranvaud, who was a jury member in the Montreal World Film Festival (WFF), died suddenly in his hotel room on Sunday night of a heart attack. He was 62. Ranvaud was known for producing the film CITY OF GOD.
Filmfestivals.com wishes him a safe trip with God.

The 73rd edition of the Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematigrafico off and running

By Alex Deleon

The 73rd edition of the Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematigrafico, otherwise known as the Venice Film Festival, is off and running.

With an overwhelming cornucopia  of films of all kinds to choose from --new Hollywood star vehicles, old restored classics, documentaries and feature films from around the globe, shorts, experimental films, etc.  one is faced with what the Italians call "l'imbarazzo della scelta"  -- Choice Overload  -- which is par for the course at major festivals like Venice.

In such a situation veteran festivaleers such as Yours Truly try to see unusual films which are not likely to turn up elsewhere and, for the time being, take a pass on most big name films which which will definitely show up at other festivals  or at commercial screenings on the streets of all major cities.

In the first couple of days the first five films I have looked in on were all in different theaters and all in different languages, to wit; Icelandic, Hebrew, English, Croatian, and Korean. (Capsule reviews below)

The grand opener on August 31 was the American biggie "LA LA Land", starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, about a jazz pianist who falls for an aspiring actress in Los Angeles. Youthful director. Damien Chazelle, 31, had a critical success "Whiplash" two years ago which also dealt with musicians. The stars graced the opening night red carpet and the pic went over big with the Italian audience and critics.

Ramsgate International Film & TV Festival Launched in Cannes

Reproduced from Britflicks.com  Fri, 03 Jun 2016

The 1st Ramsgate International Film & TV Festival, which will take place from 23 to 26 March 2017, officially launched at the Cannes Film Festival, supported by the Ramsgate Town Team.  The fabulous Royal Harbour was featured on promotional material and the reception was amazing.  Many people had never heard of Ramsgate and the prospect of a vacation in the area encouraged filmmakers to enter their work straight away.  In just a few days, submissions, which opened on May 11th had already come from the UK, the US, Canada, India, France, Italy, Spain and Turkey.  Other countries have since joined the list.

The Ramsgate IFTV Fest is presided by Brenda Blethyn.  It will open with a Gala evening and the screening of the Out Of Competition movie "Leave Now" directed byStephen Frost, entirely shot in the Ramsgate area.
The best works in competition will receive Anchor Awards and the Special Brenda Blethyn Prize will be awarded to the Best First Feature Film.  All features in competition are UK Premieres.  Some celebrities are expected to attend.
The amazing Anchor statuette has been especially crafted by local sculptor Dominic Grant.  The enclosed picture shows Dominic and the clay prototype.
The competition winners will be also be presented with original works of art by local artists, especially commissioned for the Festival, in collaboration with Ramsgate Arts.

A Youth Challenge will be organised earlier on to develop interest in films and film making in the younger mainly local generation. Each participant will have to write, shoot and edit a 3 mins film from a given title and genre over a set period of time.  During the weeks leading up to the Festival, a dedicated committee will review and select the best films, which will be screened during the Ramsgate IFTV Fest, with generous prizes for the winners.

In addition to screening films from around the world, workshops and talks by highly regarded industry professionals, will be offered to the public and to visiting/local filmmakers.  Tim Highsted (Senior Editor - Chanel 4) and Codie Entwistle (Film Content Manager - The Vue Entertainment Group) are the first speakers to have confirmed their attendance, as they will participate in a discussion panel about Distribution and new Media.  Other events will be announced at a later date.

A local competition will be launched in July to design the Festival poster.

The Ramsgate IFTV Fest is a great opportunity to increase audience development as local residents will be able to discover new movies they wouldn't normally get the chance to see.  But his festival will also help put Ramsgate firmly on the map and attract more visitors to the area.

Koldo Almandoz, Asier Altuna, Luiso Berdejo, Daniel Calparsoro, Iñaki Camacho, Borja Cobeaga, María Elorza, Telmo Esnal, Maider Fernandez Iriarte, Isabel Herguera, Ekain Irigoien, Julio Medem, Izibene Oñederra, Gracia Querejeta, Imanol Uribe (Spain)

Twelve short films, twelve portraits of the city of San Sebastian. Historic names and young promises in the field of movies made in Gipuzkoa come together in this film promoted by San Sebastian, European Capital of Culture 2016.

Sausage party

Greg Tiernan, Conrad Vernon (USA)

The first computer-animated film for adults follows a sausage leading a group of supermarket products on a quest to discover the truth about their existence and what really happens when they are chosen to leave the grocery store.

Storks

Nicholas Stoller , Doug Sweetland (USA)

Storks deliver babies… or at least they used to. Now they deliver packages for global internet giant Cornerstore.com. Junior, the company’s top delivery stork, is about to be promoted when he accidentally activates the Baby Making Machine, producing an adorable and wholly unauthorized baby girl. Desperate to deliver this bundle of trouble before the boss gets wise, Junior and his friend Tulip, the only human on Stork Mountain, race to make their first-ever baby drop – in a wild and revealing journey that could make more than one family whole and restore the storks’ true mission in the world.

On its 30th anniversary as a film theatre, the Antonio Elorza Velodrome will host the European premieres of two animated movies and the world premiere of a collective production consisting of twelve portraits of San Sebastian.

Sausage Party is an animated comedy for adults helmed by Conrad Vernon (Madagascar 3) and Greg Tiernan (Thomas & Friends) about supermarket products who learn the truth about their fate and rebel against it. The caustic comedy brought to us by screenwriters Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Superbad), alongside Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir (The Night Before) features in its original version the vocal talents of a who’s who of today’s comedy stars: Jonah Hill, James Franco, Kristen Wiig, Edward Norton, Paul Rudd and Salma Hayek, in addition to Rogen himself. The film, a US box-office leader since it hit the screens, to be distributed in Spain by Sony Pictures Releasing. The showing will take place on September 20th, precisely thirty years after the space first opened as a film theatre with Oliver Stone’s Salvador.

Storks is an animated movie based on the myth of storks and babies… and package deliveries for a global internet giant. This family comedy is directed by Doug Sweetland, among others animator of Toy Story, Cars, Finding Nemo and The Incredibles, and Nicholas Stoller, helmer of Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The Five-Year Engagement and Neighbors, who also penned the screenplay. The voices of the characters in the original version are provided by actors Andy Samberg (Hotel Transylvania 2, presented last year in the Velodrome) and Kelsey Grammer (Cheers, Frasier). Figuring in the version dubbed into Spanish, which will be heard for the first time in the Velodrome on the 18th are José Luis Gil, Belén Cuesta, Juan Ibáñez, Damian Mollá, Christian Gálvez, Almudena Cid and José Corbacho.

The Velodrome will also be the venue on September 21st for the screening of Kalebegiak, the biggest audiovisual undertaking of San Sebastian, European Capital of Culture 2016. This project consisting of twelve tales shot and/or inspired in San Sebastian includes the participation of filmmakers Koldo Almandoz, Asier Altuna, Luiso Berdejo, Daniel Calparsoro, Iñaki Camacho, Las chicas de Pasaik (María Elorza and Maider Fernández Iriarte), Borja Cobeaga, Telmo Esnal, Isabel Herguera, Ekain Irigoyen, Julio Medem, Izibene Oñederra, Gracia Querejeta and Imanol Uribe, accompanied by technical and artistic teams on which hallowed names and newcomers coexist.

The Velodrome will similarly be the setting every morning during the Festival for a screening for children under the agreed programme with schools. This year the young audience will be treated to the Danish animated movie, Albert, directed by Karsten Kiilerich.

And, as usual the venue dubbed by Oliver Stone as the biggest film theatre in the world will host on the 24th a session including a broadcast of the awards gala, screening of the closing film L’Odyssée / The Odyssey and of the film closing Pearls, Arrival, Denis Villeneuve’s latest movie. Completing the screening is a short film created under the Gas Natural Fenosa Cinergía project: Cabra y Oveja (Goat and Sheep), directed by Kike Maíllo with a script by Daniel Sánchez Arévalo.

PSSST! is a unique film festival celebrating the art of silent film

$

Rather unusual, rather trapped on the border between dream and reality, silent film has for several years found affirmation at the PSSST! Silent Film Festival organised by the Trešnjevka Cultural Centre.

PSSST! is a unique film festival presenting the art of silent film in a new, exciting and entertaining way. This Festival is a rare gem on the cultural scene which lacks initiatives offering artists the opportunity to try out their skills in this specific (and demanding!) artistic form.

The event confirms its status as a festival in the classic sense of the word through its competition programme in which contemporary “silent” titles are screened to an audience. The best film in the competition is awarded the Brcko Grand Prize, the official award of PSSST! named after the main character of Croatia’s first feature film Brcko in Zagreb made back in 1917.

But how many real silent films are made today, someone may rightfully ask? Certainly very few are made (although we can’t say none), and so we could ask the question – what is the point of the competition, what is the point of the Brcko Grand Prize? But the concept of this festival should be understood as a media experiment, created in the spirit of heterogeneity and the visual wealth of silent film. Authors can send films to PSSST! which they think could function and communicate even after we remove the original sound, and our festival is responsible for providing high-quality sound support, live music which will accompany the silent projection. Our expert improvisers cover a range of different genres and their hybrids – from rock via classical to jazz and electronic music, providing the audience with an interesting synaesthetic experience. This of course creates a film completely different from the original from which we removed the soundtrack, which is precisely why PSSST! is so exciting.

Apart from the competition programme, the Festival screens a rich selection of film classics from the golden era of silent film – masterpieces of Russian, Danish, Japanese and Swedish cinematography were already presented and this year we are dealing with the relation of psychoanalysis and silent film.

Silent film, with an expressive musical accompaniment, will lull you into a state of reverie. Its hypnotic power is not destroyed by the rude reality of the spoken word and so it becomes clear that dreams and silent films have much in common – they both deal with simple, direct emotions and action, such as love, hate, conflict or escape. This dimension of silent film emphasises its undying charm.

If you wish to open the door to a different world of unusual poetics again this year, come to PSSST! where the art of silent film lives on.

Thought provoking debate

This year's Battle of Ideas, at the Barbican in London on 22 & 23 October, is our 12th annual festival. Organised by The Institute of Ideas, the Battle has always managed to be wide-ranging, thought-provoking and wonderfully argumentative, but the festival has never seemed more important and urgent as this year's.

From the Brexit vote to the rise of Trump across the pond, politics - and the future direction of society - hasn't felt so open and contested for decades. After years when the outcome of elections has felt like changing the nameplates on the doors rather than changing the course of society, the upsurge in political engagement in recent months has been thoroughly exciting. So this year’s festival will have sessions discussing the American elections, a State of the Nation strand of debates post-Brexit, the prospects for the world economy, plus discussions on the attempted coup in Turkey, the soft coup in Brazil, the collapse of the ANC in South Africa, and the increasing tension and around Eastern Europe.

Of course, we'll be debating so much more than that, from future visions of society, 500 years on from Thomas More's Utopia, to the dismal, censorious state of our universities, from terrorist attacks in France to decolonising the curriculum. We have over 400 speakers from across the world, across the political spectrum and across disciplines from the arts to sciences, from humanities to engineering.

This year’s programme includes exciting debates spanning politics, the arts, science and technology, such as: The new populism · The moral case for abortion · Can America be great again? · Generational Inequality – Who should pay for the future?· Are political parties over? and Cultural appropriation: homage or theft? There are also themed strands of sessions, including: · Gender Wars · Battle for Education · Technology and Ethics · Emotional Intelligence · Utopias · Culture Wars · State of the Nation 2016 · Eye on the World · Moral Dilemmas and more.

Overview of the draft programme:here

SPEAKERS THIS YEAR INCLUDE:
Julian Baggini; Tom Bennett; Dr James D. Boys; Dr Yaron Brook; Jeremy Browne; Nick Cater; Professor Sarah Churchwell; Professor Tim Crane; Dr Theodore Dalrymple; Nick Cater; Professor Frank Furedi; Jonathan Glancey; Timandra Harkness; Professor Julia Hobsbawm; Barb Jungr; James Kirchick; Professor Ivan Krastev; Kwasi Kwarteng MP;  Tim Loughton MP; Professor Robin Lovell-Badge; Kenan Malik; Professor Camille Paglia; Vicky Pryce; Professor Sir Simon Wessely; Professor Bruce Whitelaw; Dr Joanna Williams and many more.

“Thelma & Louise” are back. The rebellion of women is the leading topic of the 14th edition of the Tofifest International Film Festival

We have recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of “Thelma & Louise” by Ridley Scott. It is the film that has become a manifesto of freedom for so many women. And not only women, to tell you the truth. During its 14th edition, the “rebellious” Tofifest is going to ask a question about the current relevance of the film and what is left of the rebellion that emerged 25 years ago.

The film by Ridley Scott was a surprise to many people, since the roles of rebels fighting for their ideals were reserved for men only, until then. The final form of the film was under a great influence of a script written by Callie Khouri, who won an Oscar for it, and the film itself has become a manifesto of freedom for many women.

To me, the film is a manifesto of a much more universal nature, says Kafka Jaworska, director of the festival, because “Thelma & Louise” is a manifesto of people’s freedom. And this is exactly the name of the Phenomena section this year, which is also the leading topic behind the 14th edition of our festival.

It is always difficult to discuss the issue of fighting for people’s freedom and dignity. Today, it is particularly easy to lead a discussion about virtually anything to the intricacies of politics. But that is not how we deal with things. Instead, we understand that cinema exists to stir up emotions. And sometimes it brings people together, and sometimes it separates them, adds Kafka.

For many years, Tofifest has been consistent in proving that cinema exists not only for the purpose of shaping artistic sensitivity (which is, of course, important), but also to initiate discussions about topics that are important to people. And that is exactly the mission of Tofifest – “a rebellious festival”.

As part of the 14th edition of Tofifest, there will be a special screening of “Thelma & Louise” in a digitally remastered version.

After the film, feel free to join a debate under the title “Thelma & Louise as a manifesto of people’s freedom”, along guests representing the hottest names from “both sides” of the pro-/anti-feminist groups and freedom movements. You are all very much welcome to be part of that discussion.

Tofifest has never been afraid to talk about difficult subjects. We had an open and fiery discussion about the war in Ukraine, the Islamic threat, and this time we are not going easy again. You can also talk to use in the Internet, through social media (Facebook, Twitter), and also post pictures on Instagram.

. Come and join us!

IFFR presents reinforced team at TIFF

Gearing up for the 46th edition of International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) with an ongoing focus on championing auteur films, celebrating innovative cinematic art and bringing this to a broad audience, festival director Bero Beyer presented the festival's renewed and reinforced team tonight at the Toronto International Film Festival.

To optimize the support and services the festival offers to extraordinary film talent from around the world, IFFR is taking the momentum to reshape its industry activities. As Head of Industry Marit van den Elshout will oversee this reshaping process. Having run the Hubert Bals Fund (HBF) for more than seven years, current HBF chief Iwana Chronis has decided to move on after the next festival, handing over the reins to Van den Elshout.

Head of Programme Chris Schouten will extend her activities, also supervising IFFR’s various distribution initiatives, and programmer Bianca Taal will oversee IFFR’s Talent Development schemes, such as BoostNL, the recently introduced coproduction market collaboration between CineMart and the Netherlands Film Festival’s Holland Film Meeting (HFM). Former Brave Talk Coordinator Müge Demir and Shorts Programmer Julian Ross have joined the programming team to handle research for territories in Asia.

The festival also welcomed new team members. Press Officer Jenny Canters, formerly at Benelux distributor Lumière, will handle International Press. Further appointments include Fiscal Peters as Head of Marketing and Susan Gloudemans, who joins IFFR in November from the Rijksakademie, as Head of Development.

Festival director Bero Beyer: “In the rapidly shifting marketplace in which the traditional cinematic contact with audiences is being challenged, the role of film festivals is increasing. With the coproduction market CineMart, the funding schemes of HBF and through distribution endeavours like IFFR Unleashed and IFFR Live the festival is taking on a greater responsibility in bringing films to life. Having an integrated approach is just as crucial as a matching team like ours, with such valuable experience, impeccable and daring filmic taste and boundless energy.”

French Cinema Now Festival Returns for the Fifth Year in Seattle

SIFF and TV5MONDE present French Cinema Now, a celebration spotlighting the state of contemporary Francophone cinema. The week-long event runs September 29 through October 6 at SIFF Cinema Uptown, and features seventeen extraordinary French language features and documentaries from around the world.

The week kicks off on Thursday with the Opening Night film, Lost in Paris, which marks the return of filmmaking duo Fiona Gordon and Dominique Abel (The Fairy). In this whimsical adventure, a small town librarian heads to Paris to help her elderly aunt (Oscar® nominee Emmanuelle Riva), but after a slew of wild catastrophes finds herself relying on a a seductive but annoying bum who refuses to leave her alone. An after-party will take place at Bastille Café + Bar in Ballard.

Other French Cinema Now films were created by seasoned directors like Robert Guédiguian, Joachim Lafosse, and Danielle Arbid, playing alongside relative newcomers like Mélanie Laurent, Louis Garrel, Guy Édoin, and Jihane Chouaib. Highlights include the winner of the VPRO Big Screen Award at the 2016 Rotterdam Film Festival, Ogres, about a close-knit group of actors from the traveling theatrical company Chekhov Cabaret who share everything, family, work, friendship and even their bodies; Made In France, a riveting thriller ripped from the headlines about a group of young men who are drawn into following Hassan, a psychopathic French Islamic convert; Reset (with introduction by Peter Boal, Artistic Director of the Pacific Northwest Ballet), a documentary taking viewers on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Opéra National de Paris, to witness artistic director Benjamin Millepied (the man behind the ballet for the film Black Swan) craft his first gala production for the company; and France's biggest documentary of the past year, Tomorrow, a film by Mélanie Laurent and Cyril Dion, about affecting positive change in a world faced with seemingly insurmountable environmental challenges.

As a bonus, Virginie Paradis, founder of French Truly, will be presenting two films, Parisienne and Eva & Leon, with entertaining and informative 30 minute visual introductions of the cultural context of the respective films.

SIFF Director of Programming, Beth Barrett is particularly enthusiastic about this year's program, "The 2016 French Cinema Now lineup is one of the most exciting in years - with four US premiere screenings, and award winning films from master filmmakers to first time directors - the world of Francophone Cinema is better than ever!"

Carl Spence, Chief Curator and SIFF Director, says "We're very excited about this year's lineup, being able to bring such a diverse group of films to the Francophile Seattle audience. Our continued partnership with TV5 Monde has allowed French Cinema Now to reach not only the Seattle viewers, but nationally through the TV5 Monde channel."

11th Seattle South Asian Film Festival opens with AYNABAJI; Bangladesh is in the spotlight at SSAFF 2016 (Oct 14-23)

Tasveer is proud to announce the lineup for its 11th annual Seattle South Asian Film Festival. Slated for October 14-23, 2016, SSAFF 2016 includes 23 feature films and 22 shorts from nine countries, plus a landmark community symposium about film censorship in South Asia and topical film programs centered on youth, sexual minorities, and mental health.

A fabulous Opening Night Gala at Seattle Art Museum kicks off the eleven-day Festival on Friday, October 14, featuring 2016 Bangladeshi drama AYNABAJI, a dark and engrossing urban thriller to be honored after the screening with a party including live music at the Triple Door. The film’s director Amitabh Chowdhury and celebrated Bangladeshi actor Chanchal Chowdhury are expected to attend.

On Tuesday, October 18, a diverse group of panelists moderated by Dr. Alka Kurian and including filmmakers Mostofa Farooki, Shailaja Padindala, Andy Schocken, Chanchal Chowdhury, and Varun Tandon will weigh in at Symposium: Race, Sexuality and Censorship: Film, Art and Activism in India and Beyond at the University of Washington Thompson Hall, presented in collaboration with the UW’s South Asia Center.

At the Centerpiece Gala at Seattle Asian Art Museum on Thursday, October 20, SSAFF welcomes leading-edge Bangladeshi director Mostofa Sarwar Farooki with his acclaimed comedy ANT STORY, a wry and fantastical comedy, with a reception to follow on site.

The Festival’s Closing Awards and Reception in Renton on Sunday, October 23 features WAITING, a charming tale of an unlikely friendship by Indian director Anu Menon and featuring South Asian superstars of the silver screen Kalki Koechlin and Naseeruddin Shah. WAITING is a heartrending story about confronting grief with optimism and living with courage, loving with faith, and laughing with hope.

Bangladesh is in the spotlight at SSAFF 2016 with an exceptional program of comedies, dramas, and shorts from one of Asia’s most dynamic and densely populated nations.

Embracing and embodying the theme Love Wins, the program of the 2016 Seattle South Asian Film Festival engages with our difficult and dynamic moment in history, championing the idea that love can elevate our common humanity and allow us to overcome obstacles together that seem insurmountable to individuals acting alone.

Over the past decade, SSAFF has grown to become the largest, longest, and most diverse South Asian film festival in the United States, and the only one of its size with a determined emphasis on human rights and social justice, instigating vital and groundbreaking conversations about minority oppression, immigration, women’s issues, and globalization engaged through the art of film from across the South Asian sub-continent.

A full schedule of screenings and special events is available online at ssaff.tasveer.org/2016/. Single tickets are $12 general admission; various discounts available. Special event ticket prices vary. Passes cost $75-$150 with full-fest, first weekend, and second weekend passes available. All proceeds support Tasveer. Sponsorship levels and benefits available online or contact the Executive Director at info@tasveer.org.

This collaboratively produced film puts cameras in the hands of a crew of young Somalis who live in Khirki Extension, Delhi, India. Together, director Ethiraj Gabriel Dattatreyan and the crew narrate the stories of everyday life of Cameroonian, Nigerian, Ugandan, Ivorian, and Somali students, entrepreneurs, and refugees that put into perspective the violent eruptions that target Africans as undesirable outsiders and have catapulted Khirki Extension and Delhi into the international media spotlight.

Tuesday, October 18 at 7:00 PM – University of Washington Thompson Hall

A poor farmer from a remote Bangladeshi village faces challenges from bureaucracy, from his peers, and from the traditional mindset after receiving the dead body of an ‘Oggatonama’ – the unnamed – as he receives news of the death of his son who was an expatriate working in the Middle East as an unskilled laborer. Wednesday, October 19 at 7:00 PM – Stroum Jewish Community Center

Lahore was once a haven for a musical culture passed down for centuries to the beat of the tabla drum. Today, Islamization, ethnic divisions, war, and corruption have torn apart the cultural fabric of Pakistan. Director Andy Schocken expected to attend.

Mithu feels he is not properly equipped to win over his stake, so he starts to equip himself in an unusual and unethical fashion. Director Mostofa Sarwat Farooki expected to attend.

Centerpiece Gala reception to follow on site at Seattle Asian Art Museum.

Life Stories

Friday, October 21 at 7:00 PM – Redmond Senior Center

A total of 280 films that we have received from 58 countries this year all indicate the existence of vast knowledge regarding the ecological realities of the planet that we live in. The selection process with regard to the documentaries that you have produced with extraordinary efforts posed quite a challenge for us.

Some of the major themes of #BIFED 2016 include ‘coal mines and plants’, ‘return to village’, ‘global warming’, ‘disappearance of indigenous people’, and particularly the issue of ‘garbage.’ Migrations that are triggered by ecological problems, wars, and human rights violations also constitute one of the significant issues for our festival.

We are happy to announce the finalists of #BIFED 2016 International Competition and the candidates of Gaia Student Award. The programme regarding the special screenings has not been finalized yet; we will provide further information once this process is completed. You can follow our festival and us from our social media account and website, www.bifed.org. We hope that the film makers that we were not able to include in our programme this year will see this as a result of the limitation that our resources enforce on us in terms of time and space. The selection process that we have had to go through among all these documentaries has really proven to be highly challenging due to the quality of the films that we have received.

by ALEX DELEON

Just back from closing night on the Lido. Saturday, September 11 --
In terms of number of outstanding flms seen and personalities such as J.P. Belmondo, Sophie Marceau, and John Landis encountered up close, it was the best film festival I've winged thru in years.
The closing awards watched on big screen in the Press Room was a noteworthy event in itself and I then caught a double header of prize winning flicks after that to close out the festival week.

"La Region Salvaje",  misdirected by Amat Escalante (Mexico) which shared the Best Director award, ex aqueo, was a stomach turning pornographic abortion,  but the very last closer was a thinking man's thriller called NOCTURNAL ANIMALS -- (Special Jury Prize) with Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal ~~ and I even managed to snare two festival posters to enrich my wall collage in Budapest.

LIST of Best films will follow but My Absolute most memorable one was a Japanese musical and theatrical doc about the incredible Taiko Drummers of Sado Island. Title ONDEKOZA -- a Shochiku restoration from 1981 ~~ Totally blew me away. The drumming enters your bones!

Surprising Art film made by a Gangster (Yakuza) film specialist, Kato Tai.

Another main event was Natalie Portman's JACKIE and a disappointing main event was Malick's latest orgy of self indulgence "Voyage to blablablahh --
OKAY:
Here are the best ten films I saw selected from an incredibly rich  array of possibilities:
1. Hjertasteinn (Heart of Stone)-- Beautiful Icelandic film about four teenagers, two boys and two girls, discovering sex and growing up in rough familial conditions in a fishing village far from the capital.
2. Mil Jeong  (밀정 ~ The Age of Shadows) -- Historical drama about resistance to the Japanese occupation of Korea around 1920. This mix of shootout action, psychological drama, and historical detail was so powerful I felt like I was like watching a Beethoven symphony. Tremendous lead actor Song Gang-ho, 49, has the charisma and presence of a Korean John Wayne.
3. Gukoroku, Japanese psycho thriller Whodunnit and study of elite college cliques is the background for a young investigative Journalist conducting a one man investigation of an unsolved triple murder. Guess what -- he finds out that his own sister diddit. Slick style and highly appealing young actors got a long standing ovation. Young director Kei Ishikawa may be the next big thing in Japanese cinema helming.

4. Another Japanese winner was the dazzling restored print of
ONDEKOZA, (鬼太鼓座) "demon drum group"),
the 1979 theatrical documentary on the Taiko drummers of Sado Island with some hypnotic Japanese dances performed by women in dazzling Kimonos. One of a kind film done as a succession of fantastic drumming and highly stylized dance performances executed by Tai Katô, one of the ace directors of Yakuza eiga (Japanese gangster films).
This stands out as the most thrilling slambang screen experience of the entire week. Immediate inclusion in my BestTen of 2016. A truly unique and truly artistic film.
5. Piuma -- Searching social drama about irresponsible teenage pregnancy and the oroblems it causes. Erroneously called a "Light comedy" by the Italian press, which it is anything but --
6. Jackie -- Portman outdoes herself! Full review elsewhere.
7.  THE BRAT (La Trovatella) Ford, 1931 --an early non-western by the king of Hollywood westerns. --very good. Typical twenties slang works to set the period in place. Fashion plate writer takes in homeless young woman  he discovers at a kindly judges court -- But all he wants to do is study her as material for his new novel. A charming shot from the early days of sound and a perfect restoration job.
8.  "Opfergang" (Veit Harlan, color, 1945)-- the usual love triangle in early German color process --plush straightforward social drama directed by talented Third Reich director Harlan  who was a favorite of Propaganda Minister Goebbels. Noted for the ultimate Nazi anti-Semitic tirade picture. "Jud Suess".
9.   "Réparer les Vivants" --Dir.. Katell Quilévéré, with Emanuelle Seignier (Mrs. Roman Polanski) and popular French Algerian actor Tahar Rahim (The Cut). The subject is Heart transplanting -- most vividly, indeed gorily, presented -- and the morality issues surrounding the organ donation in question. Gripping and thoughtful.

10. "Nocturnal Animals", Tom Ford (Silver Lion jury award) with Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal
The story within the story was better than the framing real story set in the wealthy upper strata of today's Los Angeles. Basically a glossy psycho thriller using the device of a fiction novel used by the writer to recapture the heart of his lost love twenty years later. Slick savvy entertainment. Texan Tom Ford won the hearts and minds of the awards night audience by delivering his acceptance speech in near perfect Italian!
