First Highlights // Focus Iran // Introducing New Prison Inmates’ Jury Award DAS BRETT

The 29th edition of exground filmfest is set to open on November 11th 2016 with the Iranian drama VALDERAMA by Abbas Amini. The film, which is being shown in this year’s festival Focus section concentrating on Iran, will celebrate its Rhine-Main premiere at Wiesbaden’s historic Caligari FilmBühne at 7 PM on the opening night of the festival.

Football god Carlos Valderrama is the undying idol of the film’s young protagonist, who styles his own ample mane into a tribute to his role model’s mop and also insists on using his hero’s name as his own. With neither family nor papers, Valderama lives by himself out in the Iranian countryside, until he is forced to flee following a dramatic incident. Transplanted to the capitol city Tehran, he struggles to get by and encounters other individuals living at the margins of society in his search for identity and a safe place to lay his head.

Focus Iran

In addition to a film program and accompanying discussions, the Focus Iran section will host an exhibition of video works by Iranian artists as well as a concert by the Iranian indie rock band LANGTUNES, who are not allowed to perform their music in their home country.

“With our dedicated Iranian short film program and our many special guests from the country, we’ve been celebrating Iranian cinematic art here at exground filmfest for a number of years now,” explains Andrea Wink of the festival’s organizational team. “By providing insight into Iranian culture and opportunities for building networks between our filmmaking guests, our audience and local film students in the scope of our Focus Iran section, we would like above all to contribute to the understanding among nations.”

Several other Iranian titles in addition to VALDERAMA have already been announced for the festival line-up. These include Mani Haghighi’s A DRAGON ARRIVES!, in which the director employs fantastic imagery in his staging of protagonist Detective Hafizi’s journey to an island in the Persian Gulf, where he is charged with investigating the suicide of a political exile. The viewer becomes immersed in a world of riddles and bizarre occurrences, one in which the lines between reality and illusion are increasingly blurred. Also among the first Focus selections is PARADISE by Sina Ataeian Dena. This gripping film tells the story of Hanieh, who is forced as a teacher in a girls’ school in suburban Tehran to pass on the repression from above to her students. Hanieh becomes increasingly disgusted by her work in this male dominated, misogynist system and longs to be transferred elsewhere. Above all of this tension hangs the suspicion that a crime has been committed. This haunting first outing from Sina Ataeian Dena was honored at both the Locarno International Film Festival and the Marrakech International Film Festival.

Award-Winning Highlights

The films of the extraordinary Chilean director Pablo Larraín have also been the object of widespread praise. After the Academy Award nominated ¡NO! and EL CLUB (which received the Grand Prize of the Jury at the Berlinale) exground filmfest is delighted to present his most recent work NERUDA. The film tells the story of Nobel prizewinning poet Pablo Neruda, who was blacklisted by the government in his native country at the onset of the Cold War and subsequently forced to go into hiding. With an exceptional ensemble cast (featuring Gael García Bernal, Luis Gnecco, Alfredo Castro and Mercedes Morán) Larraín weaves a tense crime thriller with adept nods to film noir.

The German fiction feature HANDS OF A MOTHER by Florian Eichinger received no less than two awards at this year’s Filmfest München. The film depicts a patriarch who is no longer willing or able to keep his memories of sexual abuse at the hands of his mother to himself. The resulting open confrontation with his mother at a family gathering sets off a crisis. With HANDS OF A MOTHER, Eichinger, whose film will be screened at exground filmfest in the series Made in Germany, completes his trilogy treating the consequences of domestic violence, which he began with WITHOUT YOU I’M NOTHING and NORDSTRAND.

Xavier Dolan’s most recent work IT’S ONLY THE END OF THE WORLD also deals with a family in crisis. The successful author Louis returns to his family after an absence of twelve years in order to inform them that he is mortally ill. Alas, before he is able to deliver his awful news, old conflicts rear their ugly heads and Louis’ dream of peaceful coexistence seems to recede quickly into the distance. For his sixth film, which was honored in Cannes with the Jury Gran Prix, Dolan has assembled the crème de la crème of French cinema in front of the camera, including Gaspard Ulliel, Nathalie Baye, Léa Seydoux, Vincent Cassel and Marion Cotillard.

A very special prize was bestowed upon Jim Jarmusch’s most recent outing PATERSON in Cannes: the “Palm Dog Award” for the best film appearance by a canine. Marvin the pug is the faithful companion of bus driver Paterson (Adam Driver), who leads an uneventful life in a small provincial city. But Paterson’s true calling is verse, a personal poetry inspired by fragments of his passengers’ conversations. This look at his life takes the viewer along on a journey through the city and the creative process itself.

New Prize: Prison Inmates’ Jury Award

This year, for the first time, exground filmfest will be presenting the Prison Inmates’ Jury Award DAS BRETT for the best film in the series Made in Germany. The award includes prize money in the amount of 1,000 euros, endowed by “DIE WERFT – Kulturbühne in der JVA Wiesbaden” (a cultural platform active in Wiesbaden’s correctional facilities). DIE WERFT is supported by the Federal Ministry of Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth as a model project in the framework of the federal program “Living Democracy!”. Since its inception in 2008, DIE WERFT has produced a number of plays for theater featuring casts composed of prison inmates – the organization added film projects to its core program in 2016.

The complete program for exground filmfest will be announced on October 15th 2016 and available at www.exground.com.

Successful Closing of Asian Film Market 2016 & 2nd Entertainment Intellectual Property Market; Overall Rise in Korean Film Sales and IP Deals

Increased number of sales booth representing diverse industries and numerous deals made at the E-IP Market;
With positive reviews from participants, the Market looks forward to next year’s expansions

On October 11th, Asian Film Market 2016 successfully came to a close by providing a new trend in the new media contents market. Furthermore, the Market showed solid stability with the facilitation of multiple sales of Korean films including Asura: The City of Madness at the sales booths representing Korean films and with many IP deals made at the 2nd E-IP (Entertainment Intellectual Property) Market.

This year, 157 companies from 24 nations opened sales booths at the Asian Film Market, owing to the great deal of interest in opening E-IP booths. This level of participation was consistent with last year’s participation despite the occurrence of various changes including the decrease in the overall market budget, the separate opening of BIFCOM (Busan International Film Commission& Industry Showcase), and being pressed for time during the preparation period. Furthermore, the actual number of participating companies increased this year. Moreover, the Asian Film Market has grown to become a total entertainment market that comprises diverse industries such as original TV & movie script companies; webtoons, web novels and literary publishers; as well as foreign sales companies and national agencies from various Asian countries. The success of this year’s events was confirmed by such figures as on average 3,000 visitors per day, 550 meetings facilitated at APM, more th an 30 meetings held per day at Korean sales booths, and an increase in deals made at the E-IP Market.

Expansion of Asian Market: Increased sales by sales companies including Contents Panda, M-Line, and CJ Entertainment; New Lineups of Sales Companies Drew Buyers’ Immediate Attention
Significant results were had by the representatives of sales booths that opened at the Market from October 8th to 11th.. For Korean sales companies with new lineups, there was an increase in the number of deals made and the profit made compared to last year. In the case of Contents Panda, one of the Korean sales companies, recently had huge success with <Train To Busan> in the international market. Due to such success, Contents Panda gained much interest from the buyers attending the Market for their next lineup <Pandora> and received many inquiries about making a package deal. M-Line Distribution had a more than full schedule where they had to double- or triple book meetings in one time slot. M-Line Distribution is the sales representative of this year’s Opening Film at BIFF, A Quiet Dream. CJ E&M received much attention from the buyers for <Master> and their co-productions in Asia including <The Housemaid> (co-production with Vietnam), <Cado Cado: Doctor 101> (co-production with Indonesia), and <Suddenly 20> (co-production with Thailand, remake of Korea’s Miss Granny). Showbox introduced <LUCK-KEY> which is based on a Japanese original work and will open in theaters this Thursday, and it received much attention with <Vanishing Time: A Boy Who Returned>, opening in theaters this coming November.
Lotte Entertainment had many fruitful meetings with Asian buyers at the Market. Especially, their new lineup <Will You Be There?> received much attention from the buyers.
Many other sales companies reported an increase in the number of meetings and in the profit made at the Market. Moreover, even those companies who opened their sales booths for the first time at the Market this year reported to have had many meetings. These companies include Kadokawa Corporation at the E-IP Market booths, webtoons publisher DCON E&M and Kyobobook (Macaroon).

With a focus on discovering new projects, Asian Project Market successfully facilitates a total of 550 meetings
The 19th Asian Project Market (APM) proved once again as the Asia’s most prestigious investment/coproduction event, with over 550 meetings held between APM project teams and international producers and investors. Among the 27 official APM 2016 projects from 16 different nations, <Undefined> by Korean director SEO Eunyoung, <White Building> by Cambodian director NEANG Kavich, and <Love and Vengeance> by Indonesian director Edwin were particularly popular.

IP deals made on the first day of E-IP market including Summer, A Corpse from Nowhere by Nol (Dasanbooks); earlier by 1 day compared to last year
At the E-IP Market sales booths, numerous meetings took place between representatives of Book To Film and E-IP Pitching works and potential producers, investors and distributors looking to secure original E-IP rights. Furthermore, the publishers without officially-selected works in the E-IP Market opened their own sales booths where they held numerous meetings as well. On the first day of this year’s Market, Summer, A Corpse from Nowhere by PARK Yeon-sun, a Book To Film selection, signed a deal one day earlier than the first deal signed at last year’s market. Creative Group Ggoolddanzy also secured a production agreement with Jin Films for the screenplay 49 Days Farewell. As for buyers attending the E-IP Market, Chinese companies such as Alibaba Pictures, Huace Union, Huayi Brothers, and Wanda Media all actively participated in meetings with E-IP holders.
More than 100 meetings were held between publishers representing Book To Film works and production & distribution companies including Sidus, Showbox, Cineguru, and Opus Pictures. The representatives of works in the E-IP Pitching selection had more than 150 meetings which resulted in fruitful meetings where they discussed about sales, the adaptation of the IP to another platform, as well as the purchase of IP by territory including Thailand and Vietnam. Not only in the officially-selected works, the buyers were greatly interested in other IP works owned by the representatives of Book To Film and E-IP Pitching selections. DCON E&M, All That Story, and Dab Publishing all reported that they were inquired about their other IPs.

E-IP Financing Seminar offers a new model for commercializing trans-media contents
Held during the Market, the E-IP Financing Seminar offered a new agenda for trans-media contents through the discussions had by the representatives from TGCK Partners, Kakao/Podotree, SK Broadband, and Wadiz. The seminar presented the possibility of changes in the production system if the contents that are produced according to various platforms rather than the contents adapted to platforms could have business value in the IT powerhouse Korea’s markets. The E-IP Legal Seminar also received plaudits for providing one-step-ahead information for producers. Also, practical advice on legal protection of the E-IP format was offered as a free service to the market participants which was a huge success where all the time slots were filled up even before opening up the legal service booth. Furthermore, New Story Creation Project Pitching held by Korea Creative Contents Agency (KOCCA) were flooded with meeting inquiries. As such, various events held at the Market showed new changes in the film/media production scene in a trans-media era.

At the Market Screenings of Asian Film Market 2016, 63 films from 13 nations were presented with a total of 68 screenings. Among them, 15 films were official selections at the 21st Busan International Film Festival and 50 films were market premieres which accounts for about 73% of the total films screened at the Market. Through the Online Screening service, a total of 214 films including 172 BIFF official selections were made available for the participants to watch online at their convenience. Films about disruption: German-German contemporary history and European refugee experiences at the 26th FilmFestival Cottbus

From 8 to 13 November 2016, in its Specials section, the FilmFestival Cottbus will present the two film series 'Bridges and Breaks - Convergence in Post-Unification Germany' and 'Exploring the Past: German-Czech-Polish History Through the Ages'. Both series investigate the disruption of identity in the lives of people following historic upheavals.

++ Czechs, Poles and Germans - Searching for traces beyond historical

distrust ++

The programme 'Exploring the Past: German-Czech-Polish History Through the Ages' investigates in particular the joint reappraisal of refugee experiences in the wake of World War II in 13 feature, documentary and animated films.

"These days, a young generation of Czech and Polish documentary film makers increasingly embark on a very personal journey of researching shared and concealed experiences within their family circle. Transnational identities often play a role here", says curator and journalist Jaroslaw Godlewski in providing a first taste of the film series. Yet this is not only about the historical change of perspective: "We currently once again experience how the experiences of refugees change people's identities, both of the refugees themselves and the individuals in the countries receiving them. We aim at exchanging thoughts also about this aspect." This is why transnational exchange is a key issue not only during a trinational student exchange. Four films will be screened also in the Polish sister city of Zielona Góra during the festival. The programme is funded by the Foundation for Polish-German Cooperation, the German-Czech Future Fund and the German Culture Forum for Eastern Europe. Additional media seminars will be taking place at local schools in cooperation with the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation.

++ German reunification: Reorientation and cinematic heritage ++

A retrospective titled 'Bridges and Breaks - Convergence in Post- Unification Germany' and curated by Karin Fritzsche investigates the changes in the lives of German people in the 1990s. In researching and compiling this series, the FilmFestival Cottbus also makes a documentary contribution to the cinematic heritage of the 1990s, since many of the rarely shown films had been regarded as forgotten or even lost by now.

This Festival of East European Cinema consciously includes East Germany. In its special programmes it has for many years successfully investigated also German topics and issues for which it has been rewarded with great interest on part of its audience.

The series receives funding from the Federal Foundation for the Study of the Communist Dictatorship in Eastern Germany.

Both specials will be accompanied by film talks and expert panel discussions.

From 8 to 13 November, the FilmFestival Cottbus will become the most important arena for Eastern European film for the 26th time. It receives support from the Federal State of Brandenburg, the Medienboard Berlin- Brandenburg GmbH, the City of Cottbus, the German Federal Foreign Office and the German Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.

Teapots and Modern Dance, at Venice

Director Damian Chazelle is hitting the double chord joyously as Emma Stone wins best actress, with modern dance we’re going into a dream in the real world, playing out the rhythms of a speech pattern, nursing fantasies in La La Land until lights out… the music casts a thin veil, a dream space as trumpeter Lee Morgan, plays blue notes on his life in Kasper Collins’s documentary, I Called Him Morgan.

I draw Actress Alicia Viksander in The Light Between Oceans with Michael Fassbender, she responds dreamlike “Oh, are we on a desert island? Oh, that’s gorgeous!”. Whilst talking on the character experience Alicia goes onto say “What am I supposed to feel about loss? I learned not to look for that answer” and Michael reflects “What can I offer a child? Forgiveness”

Wim Wenders directs Les Beaux Jours D’Aranjuez with Sophie Semin and Paulo Branco; picturing the differences between men and women, he alludes to the lightness of being french with beautiful text on the subject of a jukebox “we better make it into a comic, show what they can’t tell one another… and traverser la musique!”

Actors Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner experiment on Arrival, see what you are thinking, acting without words, word’s limit emotions; they refer to Love, to Anxiety and Amy’s favourite word, “Ma”.

Charles Siskal, directs the documentary on William Powell’s book, his life and the surmise of the American Anarchist, in which Powell’s clear headed reasoning and purpose of thought are expressed in his words “Think for yourself. Remorse not regret. My skeleton in print. I live with that. Bought a Gun”.

Amy Adams by Nesta

Tom Ford directs Nocturnal Animals and Amy Adams, who he professes to be “a female version of me”, and goes onto describe “The absurdity” of “my head inside the artist, I fell in love with these women, my true self… and the red velvet sofa”, not surprisingly as Ford’s designs on colour furnish the production, and go as far as to bring inspiration to actor Jake Gyllenhaal’s reading for his role from “a hue of red paper, the metaphor of heartbreak playing itself out, and a peculiar shade of colour to the script”. Actor Aaron Taylor Johnson accepts a part, saying “Take me on that journey, puppeteer me forward”, whilst Amy Adams sits by Tom Ford he confesses “I have fantasies of revenge but just the thought of it is not satisfying”.

Christopher Murray directs El Cristo Ciego, The Blind Christ offering “a parable language, a human look, a point of view” where “Faith is the sound that fills the emptiness”, he comments “It’s nice, it’s amazing!”

Jaeger Le Couture winner and Actor Liev Schreiber, describes his part in The Bleeder as “The right choice”, with humour as director Philippe Faladreau provides “Something gritty and sexy in the design of the film, and embraces the flaws of the hand held camera”, then goes onto dance, like “a pathetic ridiculous person” while Naomi Watts, actress, goes into costume for her audition sporting “Red boots, fake boobs, leopard print tights, all art forms there to connect to yourself” and she says “Wow, did you just do that!” Philippe says “It’s beautiful, thank-you! Can I take a photo?

La Culture Francaise - Allemande is brought to the front by director Francois Ozon with Frantz.

Paula Beer by Nesta

Paula Beer wins best young actress for her portrayal, in both tongues, of a love torn soul drawn into mourning and faced with the imagery of Manet’s painting, Le Suicide. The voyeur experiences next to no narrative content in this painting, but an association of sacrifice, idealism or heroism, and with Frantz we wait to learn the time, the place and the protagonist for love and death; we listen to Frantz recall “The noise is terrifying. The sound of the wind in the leaves. I can’t hear the notes. Le Suicide, Manet”.

Ulrich Seidl directs, and documents a poignant tale in Safari; a giraffe stands tall in nature, paired with a mate; then a shot, the fallen giraffe is transported alone, skinned, sacrificed as pleasure to the rich, and needs for the poor. There is a reference to “a Textbook hit”, and I find a parody to the story of Charles Siskal’s documentary film American Anarchist in which William Powell has a lifetime of reflection on his own textbook writings on weapons of destruction. Finding a youthful protagonist in the internet, a part of Powell wanted to learn more but had a hard time admitting responsibility for the acts, and fate, of offering anarchist recipes. His deliberately provocative wish to do more in light of the consequences of and autonomy in the Anarchist Cookbook, a constant companion; even out of the picture is a man who is moral, ethical, against government; there is foresight in the man, rhetoric, and anger association showing some kind of empathy to google.

James Franco states his love for literature as big as for film, an alias in Mice and Men, all with the eyes In Dubious Battle; look at the work, and he comments on a lack of consideration for the working class.

Jude Law by Nesta

Jude Law plays The Young Pope with “just a joyon these beautiful sets and colourful, wonderful compositions” directed by the humour and attention to detail of Paulo Sorrentino, “Very nice!” he comments.

Martin Koolhoven, director of Brimstone with actress Dakota Fanning and Emilia Jones, jests on the consequence of violence to playing with a mute, and then “Well, I think it looks like America, but we’re in the EU!”

Directors Mariano Cohn and Gaston Duprat's El Ciudadano IlustreThe Distinguished Citizen is “Muy bueno!” and leading actor Oscar Martinez goes on to win the Volpi Cup award for Best Actor in his well designed performance as a Nobel Prize wining writer from Spain returning to his home town in Argentina. From sets balanced with comfort of a prize and the Mies Van der Rohe Barcelona chair in a large open vista’d apartment to the aged vintage car seat of a broken down car and comic nostalgic props of a South American hotel room; the sets surround his encompassing performance and the camera shapes his character well.

Mel Gibson directs Hacksaw Ridge, and offers insight “Do something extraordinary and fantastic in life. One word, just survival. Operate from a position of love. Technical and emotional.”

Andy Garfield, actor, suggests “Real superheroes didn’t wear any spandex”. Mel comments “I just simply can’t touch it!” … “he’s dressed up in her dress” and “Wow! What a beautiful drawing”.

An unpredictable award for direction went to La Region Salvaje, The Untamed where I can only imagine the sheer fantasy of an iconic octopus personifying both male and female sexual desires touched the jury as it played against the scenes of a classic film Monte and the story of a man’s own enduring climax over a mountain.

At this point I took to the Art Biennale and sketched my way through exhibits at Arsenale.

Kim Rossi Stewart, director, producer, writer of Tommaso had one word “Bellisimo!”

Exhibited in The Bad Batch film is alter ego for director, Ana Lily Amipour, whose own life experience in one of the film locations where she claims “I had puberty there, part of my DNA” is cross referenced to her ideal films Romancing the Stone and The Princess Bride; each bring us adventure, reality, but only lead her to tease out self-dramas and quote “I think the Bad Batch is everywhere”, “anamorphic, explaining how I picked the music is like explaining how I had sex!” to A canibal that falls in love with his next meal”. On the casting, Amipour was drawn to the face of actress Suki Waterhouse, who goes onto say “I was really frightened, like an orange being peeled”

Producer Gabai makes light of their alternative production company “We didn’t know what the fuck we were doing when we started the company”.

Tai Kato, directs The Ondekoza, a well choreographed homage and masterpiece on Japanese culture and the art of performance with the Japanese professional taiko drumming group called "Ondekoza", the sound is enhanced by the strength of thunder and rain on the roof of the Sala Giardini after which the Voyage of Time : Life’s Journey directed by Terence Malick follows the path of Mother nature and earth cohabiting and exploring creation in the universe.

I sketch as the words from Mel Gibson’s table, drift over his cup of tea, “he’s playing Pope and she’s incensed… get the kinetic feel on film, extraordinary energy… a beautiful proximity, dissolve into the real frame…”

Reaching its 20th edition this year, the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival aka PÖFF (derived from the festival’s name in Estonian), the only FIAPF-accredited (International Federation of Film Producers Associations) competitive non-specialized film festival in Northern Europe takes place on 11-27 November. Spanning over the two biggest cities of Estonia – the capital Tallinn, and Tartu – and screening at nine locations which include two Apollo multiplex cinemas, cinemas Artis and Sõprus, Kosmos IMAX, the Tallinn Zoo and the Seaplane Harbour. The festival will once again seek to create a memorable celebration of film and culture for Estonian and international film fans and industry representatives alike.

Having been brought to life in 1997 by festival director Mrs Tiina Lokk as a small Nordic film showcase with 25 films in the programme and 4,500 admissions sold, the festival has seen a dramatic rise in terms of numbers over the course of 20 years. The 2015 year edition saw more than 80,000 admissions, 289 feature films from 80 different countries and more than 700 film professionals attending the festival and industry events. In 2014, the festival was recognised by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations as the only competitive non-specialized film festival in Northern Europe, an honour shared by 14 other festivals in the world, such as Cannes’, Berlinale, Venice etc.

Concurrently with PÖFF, three independent sub-festivals take place: animation film festival Animated Dreams (16-20 Nov), children and youth film festival Just Film (11-20 Nov) and international short film festival Sleepwalkers (12-16 Nov).

The festival has a full-fledged audiovisual summit Industry@Tallinn run in cooperation with the Baltic Event co-production market, which returns for the 5th year on 17-24 November. Some highlights include the annual conference of Europa International, a joint body of leading European film distributors (17-20 November), the European Film Forum Tallinn 2016 conference on the digital single market initiative held in co-operation with the European Commission, Storytek – the launch of a new bootcamp for intellectual property creators, and much more.

Three competition programmes. Awards

The 2016 edition will see three competition programmes – the International Main Competition, the International First Features and the Estonian Film Competition – all compiled by the festival’s international programme team and all evaluated by international juries.

The oldest of the three competitions is the Black Nights Film Festival International Main Competition, which includes the latest movies from already recognized international directors. Furthermore, for the first time in the festival’s history, all the films screened during the main competition are world or international premieres. Those movies will be made public on 18 October and the tickets are sold from 21 October.
In addition, the international jury issues the following awards to the best of the main competition:

• Grand Prix for the Best Film (grant of 10,000 euros, shared by the director and the producer)
• Best Director (grant of 5,000 euros)
• Best Cinematography
• Best Script
• Best Actor
• Best Actress
• Best Music

Last year, a new programme – the First Feature Competition – was introduced and instantly attracted international attention and recognition. The programme shows full-length movies from rising talents, chosen carefully by the festival’s international team. Selected movies hold a certain character of original ideas and strong cinematographic vision. Yet again, all the films screened are world or international premieres. The competition movies are announced on 11 October and the tickets are sold from 14 October.
The international jury issues the following awards to the best of the First Feature Competition:

• Award for the Best First Feature (grant of 5,000 euros, shared by the director and the producer)
• Two Special Jury Prizes

The third programme is the Estonian Film Award, presented by festival's partner Postimees, where the international jury chooses the best Estonian movie from amongst the nominated films of the ongoing year giving it the award for the Best Estonian Feature (grant of 3,200 euros, shared by the director and the producer).

Additional awards for full-length films

• Lifetime Achievement Award
• Audience Award
• Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) Award
• International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) Award
• Cross Religion award presented by the spiritual leaders of the largest congregations in Estonia
• Bruno O’Ya Award for the Best Young Estonian Film Actor

Non-competitive programmes and special screenings

As in the previous years, in addition to PÖFF’s main programme there is a wide selection of special screenings and non-competitive programmes like the Fashion Cinema, Doc@PÖFF, the Gourmet Cinema, the Midnight Shivers, sports movies in cooperation with the Estonian Olympic Committee, the Panorama programme which gives an overview of the masterpieces of the previous year trends in the world of cinema, and a selection of the most experimental and unique movies in the programme Forum. Altogether, PÖFF shows about 250 full-length films from more than 70 countries.

Two films in the programme of Doc@PÖFF will see the return of directors that have grown very popular among the festival’s audience. Sergei Loznitsa will be presenting his fresh documentaryAusterlitz that opened with favorable reviews at the Venice Film Festival this year depicting tourists visiting two of Germany’s  former concentration camps. His feature film My Joy (2010) was enjoyed by PÖFF’s audiences at jury alike as it was awarded with the Grand Prix.

Aother audience favourite who will visit the festival this year is Vitalyi Manskyi, who was awarded the Best Director award and the Special Jury Prize in 2015 for his documentary Under the Sun, a poetic study of life in North-Korea. The director presents his latest film Close relationsthat documents the life of Ukrainians under the difficult political circumstances.

Japanese horror movie maestro Hideo Nakata to visit the Black Nights Film Festival

Every year, four to five special screenings take place during PÖFF, which the programme team wishes to highlight for various reasons. The selection is done on the basis of cultural uniqueness and a special connection with the festival or Estonia in general. This year, one of those films is the Japanese erotic drama White Lily, which is presented by its director Hideo Nakata. The Japanese director is renowned in the horror genre for films such as Ringu, Ringu 2 and Dark Water, but has also made successful detours to other genres.

White Lily belongs to the reboot project of the Japanese distribution company Nikkatsu’s series Roman Porno, an extremely popular erotic movies series which saw a successful run from the beginning of the 1970s to the end of the 1980s.
The festival shows the European premiere of the film.

The 20th Black Nights Film Festival takes place from 11 to 27 November in Tallinn and Tartu.

PÖFF’s programme will be released gradually from 11 October to 3 November.

New initiatives at 53rd Antalya Film Fest

2016 sees the International Antalya Film Festival celebrating its 53rd edition; it continues to be the most important calendar fixture for Turkish cinema. Taking place in the ancient city of Antalya – renowned for its feasts, celebrations and festivals for over 2,500 years – the festival will once again host national and international cinema professionals and cinephiles between the 16th and 23rd of October.

The Festival’s press conference was held in Antalya last Thursday. This year, the festival continues its mission to represent the best of Turkish and international cinema, bringing together directors, producers, industry professionals, celebrities, and names both new and legendary. This year’s festival motto is ‘The Light of Cinema Shines from Antalya’, reflecting Antalya’s mission to become one of the major capitals of world cinema.

For its 53rd edition, the festival boasts a number of exciting additions. A new initiative, FILM TMR, offers a dedicated marketing and communications platform for Turkish Cinema. The ‘Festival Road’ will be a bustling public hub for this year’s activities. The Competition and general screening lineups are both diverse and exciting. And in addition, IAFF will include special screening sidebars on two of the most significant issues of our time: the global refugee crisis; and life during and after coups around the world.

Recently, the festival has revealed its highly anticipated festival poster and announced that Gérard Depardieu, one of the most beloved and respected actors in contemporary cinema, will attend the festival as a special guest. In addition, the
Golden Orange Award will be given to the two legendary names of Turkish Cinema, actor Yılmaz Gruda and director Feyzi Tuna. Dubbing artists Altan Karındaş and Toron Karacoğlu will receive Golden Orange Labor Award, while Emel Sayın will receiving this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

First launched in 1964 (the first and longest-running film festival in the country), IAFF quickly became the most important and iconic cinematic event in Turkey, and one of the most important film festivals in Europe and Asia.

During the press conference, the Mayor of Antalya Metropolitan Municipality, Menderes Türel, took the opportunity to share his vision for Antalya. Referring to the abortive coup attempt in July, he stressed the importance of continuing to work – ‘the show must go on’ – and said that IAFF will function as usual, full of surprises and exciting additions.

He said that one of his major goals is to promote the International Antalya Film Festival to a wider global audience, and noted with satisfaction that attendances from international filmmakers is on the rise. The Mayor not only reminded the audience of the announcement of Gérard Depardieu’s visit, but promised that further VIP guest announcements would be made in the coming days.

He added: “My other major goal is to make Antalya a leading city for the Turkish and international cinema industries. To this end, we have founded the Antalya Film Support Fund, whose cash prize of TL 100.000 TL will promote new film projects and joint productions in Antalya.”

Elif Dağdeviren, the director of the 53rd International Antalya Film Festival, has also shared details about the films and competition strands at this year’s event, along with the festival’s social-responsibility projects. According to Dağdeviren, for the past two years the Antalya Film Festival has been one of the only film festivals with a clear social responsibility goal: “All festivals,” she said, “have a clear social responsibility component, by virtue of their role in bringing people together and creating an opportunity to see films that are not easy to find”.

“However,” she added, “since technology is now so advanced, and because people have the opportunity to watch films in various different platforms, this function alone is not enough. Therefore International Antalya Film Festival has been supporting various social-awareness initiatives for the past two years.”

Inspired by the failed July 15th coup-attempt in Turkey, she noted that this year’s festival includes two special sidebars: ‘People of Nowhere’ and ‘The Sun’s Eclipse’. The former focuses on refugees – the contemporary world’s common problem and wound. The latter section features films about life under coups, and suggests what might have happened had the July attempt succeeded. These will be detailed in subsequent press releases.

International Antalya Film Festival continues to support new film projects with Golden Orange statuette and cash prize, and promote Turkish Cinema with national competition and short film selection. One of the most important film festivals in Europe and Asia, International Antalya Film Festival will be the heart of Turkish and world cinema for the 53rd time in 16-23 October.

An Iconic Antalya Tradition: The Festival Cortege

Every year the festival presents the Festival Cortege, bringing together citizens of Antalya, and national and international stars. For the past two years, the cortege is termed the Social Responsibility & Awareness Cortege, and celebrities greet the public in order to bring attention to social issues of Turkey.

This year, the traditional festival cortege will be held on 15th of October: a Saturday. Special screening programs form part of IAFF’s social responsibility projects. One of the most urgent and distressing issues of the world, the plight of illegal immigrants and refugees, will form the focus of a special film selection. Inspired by the failed 15th July coup attempt, another program dedicated to films about coups and dictatorships, will emphasize the importance of democracy.

Films about Refugees: ‘People of Nowhere’ Film Program

In addition to its regular festival program, International Antalya Film Festival also aims to bring attention to social issues and the common problems of humanity. With this in mind, the festival is proud to present a special sidebar dedicated to films about the lives and problems of refugees. Turkey is known for its strong position and positive activities toward refugees, and the ‘People of Nowhere’ section wants to open a dialogue through cinema. Artists, local and foreign guests will come together for refugees with various workshops and additional activities. The condition of being a refugee, and the stories behind their lives, will be discussed during the festival. ‘People of Nowhere’ will present 5 films in total from Denmark and Austria, as well as Italian-French and British-Turkish-Swiss co-productions.

Films about Coups: ‘The Sun’s Eclipse’ Film Program

Last July, Turkey was rocked by an attempted military uprising that evoked strong reactions around the world. Luckily, it was quickly defeated, in no small part thanks to democratic support and unity from citizens.

In the aftermath of the coup attempt, the festival decided to present an exclusive section called ‘The Sun’s Eclipse’. This unique film program is a powerful testament to the importance of democracy and human rights, and includes films from Turkey, Chile, Argentine, Uruguay, Brazil and Greece. The film program aims to depict the conditions of life under a coup or dictatorship, and suggest what might have happened, had the coup succeeded.

Golden Orange Honorary Awards

For its 53rd edition, the honorary Golden Orange will be awarded to the two most important figures in Turkish Cinema, each of whom has worked hard for many years, and lent their talent and craftsmanship to great and important productions.

Director Feyzi Tuna was in his early 20s when he directed his first film, ‘Love Thirsty’ (Aşka Susayanlar), in 1964. Devoting his whole life to the cinema, Tuna has collaborated with such legendary actors as Fatma Girik, Ekrem Bora, Türkan Şoray and Kadir İnanır. He brought Girik and İnanır together in ‘Ezo the Bride’ (Ezo Gelin, 1973) and for ‘I Buried You in My Heart’ (Seni Kalbime Gömdüm, 1982), worked with such master names as Türkan Şoray, Cihan Ünal, Müşfik Kenter, Ahmet Mekin, Çolpan İlhan and Neriman Köksal. Also working in television, Tuna won viewers’ hearts with his every production. A favourite of actors, he is also renowned for his elegant screenplays.

Starting his acting career with ‘The Lord of Nine Mountains’ (Dokuz Dağın Efsanesi, 1958), directed and written by Metin Erksan, Yılmaz Gruda is one of the actors who founded the ‘Blue Movement’ with Atilla İlhan. Known for his smiling eyes, his trademark moustache and powerful, resonant voice, Gruda has delivered memorable performances in over 40 films, including ‘Everybody’s Favorite’ (Herkesin Sevgilisi, 1970), ‘Crying Angel’ (Ağlayan Melek, 1970), ‘How Does Asiye Survive’ (Asiye Nasıl Kurtulur,1973), ‘Bitter Anguish’ (Cano, 1973) and ‘Blood Money’ (Diyet, 1975).

Emel Sayın to Receive the Lifetime Achievement Award

One of the most unforgettable stars of the Turkish film industry, Emel Sayın has been an important figure in Yeşilçam since 1970s. Her success in the music industry was followed by many popular film productions. After her first role in Champion (Şampiyon, 1970), she took leading parts in Hicran (1971), Süreyya (1972), ‘Liar’ (Yalancı Yarim, 1973), ‘The Enemy’ (Düşman, 1973), ‘Painful Memories’ (Acı Hatıralar, 1977) and ‘The Wind’ (Rüzgar, 1980), ‘Feride’ (1971), ‘Gülizar’ (1972) and ‘The Blue Bead’ (Mavi Boncuk, 1974). Winning the hearts of fans with her extraordinary beauty and exquisite voice, Emel Sayın is one of our most beloved actresses.

Altan Karındaş and Toron Karacaoğlu to receive
Golden Orange Labor Awards

An important actress in Turkish cinema and theatre since the 1950s, Altan Karındaş later added voice-dubbing and television acting to her career. Beloved by fans from 7 to 77, the popular star has played in more than 30 Turkish films, and lent her distinctive voice to many important foreign films.

One of the most prolific artists of Turkish cinema, Toron Karacaoğlu has worked consistently in films, theater plays and television series. Known for his romantic juvenile lead roles, as well as portraying heroes in films such as Battalgazi, Malkoçolu, Karamurat and many more, he also lent his voice to Cüneyt Arkın, one of the leading actors of Turkish Cinema.

International Antalya Film Festival Competitions

One of the most important film festivals in Europe and Asia, International Antalya Film Festival this year received 353 film submissions for the competition. In addition, the festival’s highly-anticipated National Feature Film Competition received 60 applications in total, 6 of which were documentaries.

The competition will award a Golden Orange statuette and a 100.00 TL cash prize in total, 50.000 TL of which will be earmarked for distribution support.

Since 2005, the festival also has an International Feature Film Competition, which awards a Golden Orange statuette as well as a 50.000 Euro cash prize.

This year saw 202 submissions to the National Short Film Selection. To help these works reach a wider audience, examples of the Short Film Selection will be shown to audiences before screenings of each of the international competition films. Films from the National Short Film Selection are also eligible for the Audience Award, as decided by public voting.

Antalya Film Support Fund

This year the festival has added the Antalya Film Support Fund to its competition sections – awarding a 100.000TL cash prize to support a feature national film currently at a scenario stage, on the condition that one-third of the film must be shot in Antalya.

The Fund aims to promote Antalya as an outstanding film production location, with remarkable light and natural features for filming. This year alone, 40 different scripts applied to the Antalya Film Support Fund.

Antalya Film Forum: A Dedicated Platform to Promote Turkish Cinema

Antalya Film Forum, directed by Zeynep Atakan, will be held for the third time during the festival from 16-22 October. Antalya Film Forum has different sections, both to support joint productions and to develop new projects. It encourages producers and directors to produce new films, ensuring the recognition of their projects in the international film industry.

The Work-in-Progress section supports films in their editing stage, while Documentary Pitching Platform and Pitching Platform sections encourage new projects in their scenario stages. The Work-in-Progress section carries a cash prize of 100.000 TL, and the Pitching Platforms award 30.000 TL for each section. The winning projects will also receive a special award certificate.

A Brand New Platform: FILM TMR (Film Talent Marketing Rounds)

A new initiative of the International Antalya Film Festival, FILM TMR (Film Talent Marketing Rounds) is a networking, communication and marketing platform enabling documentaries, animation and feature films produced in Turkey to achieve national and international commercial platforms, while simultaneously providing a network to build relationships for commercial marketing and communication of these films by organizing communication events for national and international professionals.

FILM TMR is a pioneering platform for Turkish Cinema and is perhaps the most eagerly anticipated section of this year’s festival.

Applications for FILM TMR are open till September 20 and regulations and the application form can be found on the official festival website.

Another First in Antalya:
The New Festival Center and the Festival Road

The 53rd International Antalya Film Festival is also turning the King’s Road between the Glass Pyramid and the Antalya Culture Center into a ‘Festival Road’. The Glass Pyramid will become the main festival center, and a hub for industry professionals from this year onwards.

The Festival Road will be open from 12 pm to midnight, and guests will have a chance to attend various activities including panels, autograph sessions with Turkish and foreign actors, concerts, workshops and exhibitions. There will be also lounges and stands dedicated to products and social-responsibility projects.

This area will be a bustling meeting point for the festival apart from the movie theaters.

DIRECTORS' DEBUTS COMPETITION 2016 LINE-UP!

Directors’ Debuts Competition was initiated in 2010 due to the Festival’s increasing openness to the noteworthy artists and the new film phenomena they create. The idea of creating additional competition sections was a natural consequence of our previous activities. For years we have been promoting innovative projects that combine intellectual freedom, remarkable insight into world affairs and a desire to inspire other artists of the screen.

Directors’ Debuts Competition brings new discoveries: great movies of high artistic value and great filmmakers whose new ventures surprise not only the Jury members but all audiences around the world as well.

Agony

A twenty-something student murders his girlfriend without any apparent reason, then cuts her into pieces and throws her into a dumpster. A fourteen-year-old girl attacks her mother with a knife just because she was not allowed to use the internet. These crimes presented by the film were very specific and yet undefined, undoubtedly for myriads of reasons that get lost in the mundanity of everyday life. Agony tells two parallel stories of young men who are forced by adult life to negotiate their dreams and desires with an indifferent world. Can their souls be tainted by evil too? On the one hand, they are very similar: neither has the support of a father figure; neither knows how to vent their sexual tensions. On the other hand, they come from completely different worlds and seem to be driven by entirely different things. This is a film about them, and their generation, as well as – quite simply – about the human nature.

All We Had

An unemployed alcoholic who can’t seem to find her place in the world escapes with her teenage daughter from the umpteenth man to mistreat them badly. As they look for the next town and a different version of the same old story, Rita and Ruthie go on yet another odyssey of petty theft and exploitation of the kindness shown by those who naively try to help them. They sleep in their car, dreaming of a better future, and support each other in every challenging situation. Mother and daughter against the world. But eventually Rita and Ruthie are forced to face the music and stand before the very people they were trying to con, which could – but may not – become their new beginning. All We Had is the story of an unbreakable bond between mother and daughter, and at the same time a tale of good people who get lost and forget who they were, waiting for something that will never come – at least not in the shape they hope for.

Aloys

Aloys Adorn is a private detective who has lost his will to live after his father’s death. He tries to fill the existential void with a series of repetitive actions and gestures, as well as a voyeuristic streak that his job demands of him, while living in permanent emotional and physical isolation. But then, one day Aloys unexpectedly meets a woman who wants to change his way of thinking. Well, he meets Vera over the phone when she invites him to participate in a game of imagination called ‘phone walking’. It goes like this: one person opens the other’s mind through the power of voice and verbal suggestion, thus establishing a connection, devoid of imperfect physicality, which will enable both of them to go on exciting virtual adventures and become better versions of themselves. Aloys is an innovative drama that poses a series of questions about the limitations of the human psyche and the power of imagination to both build bridges of understanding and walls of ignorance.

Aiman and Suhaila are siblings staying in a modest housing estate in Singapore, living most of their lives in the shadow of the crimes committed by their father. When he was a teenager, Aiman fell in with a bad crowd and it was only the discipline of the military that helped him to conquer his inner demons. In the beginning of the film, he starts working as a correctional officer in a maximum security prison. He could easily have become one of the convicts in his youth, so he hopes to help those who have repented their sins and wish to change. Aiman begins to develop a relationship with Rahim, the prison’s long-time executioner who has been hanging people for a few decades now, as Singapore’s law still permits the death penalty. After a while he begins to help Rahim with his job. Apprentice is not a story of the penal system, nor a sharp political accusation, but a film about people who live with death every single day, trying to give it a bit of dignity.

Between Sea and Land

Colombia’s northern coast, on the edge of the Caribbean Sea. A row of open-air shacks stand on piles driven into the water. The poor who can’t afford to live in the city reside here. Alberto is a young man who as a child was diagnosed with dystonia, a neurological movement disorder that leads to the atrophy of muscles in the whole body. The man is forever confined to his bed, constant accompanied by a life-support machine. His only way to see the outside world is through a mirror on a stick he holds in his mouth, thus making him painfully aware he is so close to the sea, and yet so far from it. His whole world revolves around his loving mother, who does her best to make her son’s life bearable. However, Alberto is also often visited by his attractive childhood friend, Giselle, who constantly reminds him of the physical prison he lives in and will never leave. Despite all of this, Between Sea and Land is a tale of hope and boundless love between mother and son.

Delivery

Delivery invites the viewer on a journey into the depths of the endless Colombian forests, whose cyclical nature hides many secrets. This is a place which is modern and ancient at the same time; it has existed practically unchanged for centuries, out of the reach of the human species, which seems to insist on destroying the planet. Among the trees’ greens and bronzes, and the navy blues of the nearby river, which has been running its course for thousands of years, there stands a small house. It is modest, it leaks here and there, and it is the only proof of human existence for hundreds of kilometres around. The group of people who live here, at the very heart of the Colombian forest, make ends meet by fishing, harvesting corn, and living in symbiosis with nature. They are still strangers there, though they could not imagine living anywhere else. The film’s protagonist is Helena, who awaits the birth of her child, an event that will mark the continuation of the endless circle of life.

Demons, The

Montreal’s suburbs, seemingly tranquil, idyllic even, though pulsating with restless, often negative, energy within the houses it encompasses – the kind of energy that cannot find a vent in mundane everydayness. The place, which is exactly the same as hundreds of other suburbs, is full of more or less satisfied families, aggressively maturing teenagers, and kids only beginning to recognise the hardships of life. Among them is Félix, the film’s ten-year-old protagonist, a kind and helpful, though oversensitive, boy who sometimes reacts with cruelty to family or school problems, but in other ways is as normal as his peers. However, he is constantly exposed to the workings of external forces he does not understand, but which make the world he lives in go round. The Demons is a precise exploration of all the evil and imperfections hidden in the human soul that are being passed from one generation to the other, imposed by a society upon an individual, transferred from parents to children.

Lady Macbeth

Nineteenth-century Great Britain. Katherine is a young woman who is married to an older, wealthy land owner, though she becomes a lady in name only. For her fate is to live in a world of men who treat her purely as a pretty decoration. Something pleasurable to look at, or be turned on by, or to brag about once in a while, but devoid of any signs of free will. Not to mention ambitions, desires, or dreams. Bored to death with her meaningless existence in her husband’s suffocatingly bland house, Katherine uses every opportunity to take a breath of some freedom on the nearby moors. With each subsequent day she succumbs to emotional stagnation and despair. Lady Macbeth is not, however, a tale of submission to patriarchy. When Katherine meets Sebastian, her husband’s audacious, provocative new worker who does not shy away from showing off his masculinity, the woman’s transformation begins. Gradually, with each irretrievable decision, she earns the titular comparison.

Miles Ahead

A cinematic impression, breaking most of the rules for by-the-book biopics, of the legendary jazz musician Miles Davis, narrated through multiple time frames and toying with the endless possibilities of genre cinema. A tale in which nothing is for certain, and in which one does not know what was based on facts from Davis’s life and what was created within the bounds of the filmmakers’ imagination. Most of Miles Ahead takes place in 1979, at the very end of a five-year period of silence in the musician’s professional life. But the film also switches fluently between different decades, mixing numerous characters and events from Davis’s life, and adding some completely fictional ones. Jazz sessions are supplemented with car chases, drug-fuelled visions intertwine with gun-blazing, and the non-linear narrative accentuates the influence of Davis’s failed marriage on his artistic identity. The film is a creative interpretation of facts and myths about different sides of Miles Davis.

Cinematographers’ Debuts Competition was initiated in 2010 due to the Festival’s increasing openness to the noteworthy artists and the new film phenomena they create. The idea of creating additional competition section was a natural consequence of our previous activities. For years we have been promoting innovative projects that combine intellectual freedom, remarkable insight into world affairs and a desire to inspire other artists of the screen.

Cinematographers’ Debuts Competition bring new discoveries: great movies of high artistic value and great filmmakers whose new ventures surprise not only the Jury members but all audiences around the world as well.

The problem is that his films are censored and nobody can legally watch them. Between them there is a young and alluring actress named Eva. She loves Honza, but at the same time she is tempted by the freedom offered by Helmut. There will be no classic love triangle between them, though – it is 1968, the Prague Spring is already happening, and the military intervention of the Warsaw Pact is under way. Eyes of My Mother, The

It begins with a brutal murder, and then it only gets more intense. A raving lunatic with a grotesque grin on his face mercilessly slaughters an older woman, who happens to be an immigrant that found asylum for her family in the idyllic American countryside. There is a witness to this heinous crime: the woman’s young daughter, who will never be the same again. Years later, the adult girl lives in seclusion, grieving the recent passing of her dear father and manifesting increasingly psychopathic inclinations. Will she become a monster as cruel as the man who tainted her life forever? The Eyes of My Mother is a tale of loneliness disturbing the mind and leading to desperation, shot in elegant and expressionistic black and white. Both a drama about a broken human being and a classical horror movie with creepy narrative twists and turns, its suggestive atmosphere builds upon Gothic imagery and melancholic yearning expressed through soulful fado music.

In this TV series created by Bridget Carpenter, an English teacher from Maine discovers a way to travel back in time, leading him to attempt to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, one of the crucial moments in the history of the USA. In the pilot episode directed by Kevin Macdonald, the protagonist travels to 1960, three years before the Dallas tragedy, with a strong belief that he can change the course of history. However, he quickly discovers that detailed accounts of JFK’s death and data about people connected to the assassination will not be enough to complete his mission. Especially as the past obviously does not like to be changed, making the protagonist pay for his successful actions with the suffering of people he has met along the way. 11.22.63 takes the viewer on a journey to a bygone era – a time during which America began losing its innocence – making for a riveting, cerebral thriller and a suspenseful crime story.

1992: Episode #1.1

For Italy, the first half of the 1990s was a time of political cleansing and numerous corruption scandals that shook the country’s very foundation, forcing it subsequently to seek a fresh start. This drama series, created by Stefano Accorsi, Alessandro Fabbri, Ludovica Rampoldi, and Stefano Sardo, tells the tale of six people at the very centre of the political and social changes, some of them ambitious and power-hungry, others seeking different kinds of redemption. Among them is a young police officer who was infected with HIV because of the actions of a greedy businessman, a woman who uses her body to pursue a career on national television, and a Gulf War veteran who accidentally becomes the new face of a political party on the rise. Through his mastery of the language of images, the director of 1992’s pilot Giuseppe Gagliardi has created a complex and multidimensional story about people who were caught up in the winds of change without ever noticing the serious consequences on the horizon.

Crown, The: Wolferton Splash

This drama series, created by Peter Morgan, narrates the different events that shaped the new face of the British Royal Family after World War Two. The pilot episode, directed by Stephen Daldry, begins when Princess Elizabeth is already awaiting her wedding with Prince Philip who in the first scenes abandons his Greek and Danish royal titles and becomes a British citizen. Their marriage is a happy and prosperous one, bringing the royal family subsequent heirs, while King George VI is diagnosed with a grave illness. Nevertheless, Elizabeth and Philip do not suspect that soon they will be tasked with heading the British Commonwealth, thus leaving their personal aspirations and putting their future plans forever on hold. The Crown is an elegant and complex story that slowly goes under your skin, with the most important things happening not through dialogues, but non-verbally, in a space existing between the characters and defining who they are both as normal people and members of the royal family.

False Flag: Episode 1

Five ordinary Israelis are accused of a high-profile political kidnapping in Russia, leading to an international scandal. The problem is that none of them seems to know what is going on, and Mossad is confused about the whole thing as well. Is this a matter of anonymous perpetrators stealing their passports, or is one of the five hiding a secret? False Flag, a series created by Maria Feldman and Amit Cohen, is a crime thriller with elements of black comedy that resembles a murder mystery party game in which all players proclaim their innocence until the villains are revealed and the group finds out who was manipulating whom. Oded Ruskin, the pilot episode’s director, puts the viewer at the heart of the action and leaves them guessing about who can be trusted, only to turn the story upside down and start the whole cat-and-mouse game afresh. Don’t get lost in the labyrinth of false trails and suspicious behaviour, and try to get to the bottom of everything before the truth gets out on its own.

Golden Life

The suburbs of big cities are full of wealthy and influential people who made their fortunes by ignoring the law and social rules. Golden Life’s (anti)hero is one such person; an intelligent conman living in an affluent Budapest suburb who had to cross many lines to get his family where it is now. Many years have passed, however, and the man has matured, his youthful bravura giving way to a strong desire to start an honest life. But it’s not easy to leave one’s shady dealings when unpaid bills are piling up and the family isn’t able to resign from its expensive way of living. Gabor Krigler created this TV series based on the Finnish format in Helppo elämä, making a multidimensional and dramatic, yet also humour-filled, tale of different aspects of human nature. In turn, the pilot episode’s director Zsombor Dyga went the distance to make sure every viewer was able to see themselves in the characters’ attitudes and actions.

Upon her arrival, the woman is met with aversion and suspicion by the locals, who have become divided over the years because of ecological and ideological issues. Suddenly, another girl goes missing without a trace and the nightmare begins all over again. A tale of the struggle for women’s rights and social transformations in Germany told to the rhythm of rock ’n’ roll’s bravado. Berlin, 1956. One of the daughters of the conservative owner of a reputable dance school rebels against the arbitrary rules making women subservient to men. She wants to decide for herself how to live and with whom to share this life. This means she is looked down on by not only her mother and sisters, who have already found the men they want to safely marry, but by all of society. However, the generational storm is on its way to shake up the conservative thinking of post-war Germany. The Ku’damm 56 mini-series, produced by Nico Hofmann and Benjamin Benedict, tells the story of the not-so-distant past when women were treated as an attractive bonus to their men, though the first episode directed by Sven Bohse is full of the spirit of youth and hopefulness – and dancing that can bridge generations.

Night Of, The: The Beach

This miniseries, created by Richard Price and Steven Zaillian and based on the British TV show Criminal Justice, is set against the background of the cultural, national, and racial melting pot that makes up a large part of modern New York’s identity. The Night Of’s protagonist is a naïve and shy American-Pakistani student who becomes the main suspect in a murder case... though he does not remember if he is guilty of the crime. Major supporting roles went to the police ethos that demands each case and piece of evidence be double-checked, the American justice system that in theory should exist above all divisions, and the city that never sleeps, watching indifferently over the human drama that goes on within its boundaries. The pilot episode, directed by Zaillian himself, is a masterclass in creating visual suspense and building a believable, complex world that is filled with living and breathing characters with different attitudes, faults, and reactions.

Terence Winter, Martin Scorsese, Mick Jagger, and Rich Cohen created a TV series about the chaotic, exciting, and frantic musical 1970s, when the failure of the hippie movement and the ever-growing nightmare of the Vietnam War made America look for new roads to go down. The protagonist is a record label executive and the owner of the label American Century who struggles in this new reality, while also struggling with serious drug and family issues. He decides to risk everything that he has achieved in order to find and promote a future star and renew his long-lost passion for music. Vinyl’s pilot episode, directed by Martin Scorsese, takes the viewer on a journey to awesome rock concerts, insane underground events full of youth energy, crazy private parties in enormous villas, and even more. Westworld the TV series, created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy Nolan, is based on Michael Crichton’s film of the same name. It brings to life a futuristic amusement park, made to resemble the bygone world of the nineteenth century’s Wild West. After entering its premises, the establishment’s wealthy guests can do whatever they desire, whether that’s becoming brave and reckless adventurers, impersonating men of law and order armed with Colts and strong moral codes, or murdering, raping and doing other evil things. All as a part of safe, artificially created, and fully controlled virtual reality entertainment. However, in the Jonathan Nolan-directed pilot episode something goes terribly wrong, and the park’s technologically advanced androids, created solely for the purpose of entertaining its visitors, begin to behave in an unpredictable way. Is this a sign that somehow they have gained consciousness? Are humans from the park in danger? What exactly does it mean to be human?
