BREAKING NEWS / LAST HOUR INFORMATIONS

Dear Friends,

Greetings from Porto.

On the 15th January the country was put in lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic, at least till the 15th February. All Cultural events have been suspended and theatres were closed. However, we hope that as soon as the lockdown ends, we will be able to resume the normal activity, therefore being able to have Fantasporto in the announced dates- 25th February till 7th March – at the Rivoli Theatre, following all rules coming from the Health Authorities which condition the available seating and number of screenings.

Regarding our visitors, should they decide to come to Porto, they must submit to the travelling restrictions imposed by the government. Presuming that some of the present ones continue, namely to have a negative Covid-19 test followed by  a 2 to 7 days quarantine till the end of February,  we are sorry to inform that the festival will not be able to support more than the 3 hotel nights agreed, leaving all extra expenses on account of our visitors.  We suggest that, to minimize the absence and as an introduction to the screenings, a small statement can be sent in MP4, as soon as possible. As for the International Juries, the festival will provide the necessary conditions to do his work.

Sorry for the inconveniences. For further information, don’t hesitate to contact us through info@fantasporto.com

How memory is not free of images and images are not beyond cycles of oppression. What people and trees have to say to each other. And the hope to surprise oneself through new connections. The first films and debates of the Berlin Critics’ Week 2021 at a glance. The film program will be available to the public virtually throughout Germany from February 27 to March 7. Debates on the programs will take place online every day from March 1 to 7 and will be broadcast live.

Under the title "Facing Traces," two films that approach drastic realities via speculations, fragments, and abstractions will meet on the opening night of the film and debate program of this year's Critics’ Week. For "The Sky Is Red," filmmaker Francina Carbonell worked her way through 60 hours of footage created in 2010 in connection with the horrific San Miguel prison fire in Chile, portraying a moment of destruction in which images worked against people: As prison inmates burned, surveillance cameras were pointed at blank walls by guards. Our conference guest Suneil Sanzgiri's work explores forms of oppression and their connections with decoloniality, history, and memory. In "Letter From Your Far-off Country," he engages with various political struggles in India in the form of a biographical essay. The filmmaker addresses the titular letter to a relative who was an important representative of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

"Talking Style": on the closing night of Critics’ Week, two youth films will engage in dialogue with each other, offering a contrast through their stylistic choices. We are excited to present the World Premiere of Caroline Pitzen's "LEISURE or: the opposite of doing nothing" Pitzen and her DoP Markus Koob ("Selbstkritik eines bürgerlichen Hundes") explore with curious glances how young Berlin activists discuss political struggles, reflect on their actions, and try to imagine the next steps for society. It's a scenario in which free time cannot be disentangled from the question of freedom. Their film meets "A Museum Sleeps" by Camille de Chenay, which film critic Cyril Neyrat enthusiastically commended at the 2020 FIDMarseille festival: "The emergence of a new fiction film director is not a common thing anymore in France, and it hasn't been in a long time. So, what exactly is a fiction film director? It is someone who has an infectious thirst for designing frames, for shaping lights and colors, someone who enjoys linking sequences, making jump cuts or wiping from one shot to the next. Their films make apparent that cinema is painting expanded by music – through a game of timbres, the modulation of speed and tones, the precision of rhythms." A program of two debut films, with a debate on the new voices of cinema and the protean rhetoric of film.

In recent months, the international film festival landscape has changed. Due to the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, events all over the world have had to develop new ways of presenting and discussing films. Likewise, unexpected forms of collaboration have emerged, along with a new openness to deviations from existing routines of programming. The Berlin Critics’ Week explores the insights of the past months and transforms them into a method: We invited international festivals that had never collaborated before to propose films and curate programs together with us. For the first such festival tandem, Duisburger Filmwoche and Black Canvas Contemporary Film Festival will present a double program of "first in first out" by Zacharias Zitouni and "Intimate Distances" by Phillip Warnell. Under the title "Beyond Recognition," we are joined by representatives from the two festivals to question cinema's ability to make the world and human beings recognizable, and consider whether they automatically become more tangible and accessible in the process.

IRIS by Diana Rodriguez

USA - Fantastic drama thriller: 104 minutes - first feature film

Alice Kremelberg (Orange Is The New Black) stars as the eponymous Iris, and gives an outstanding lead performance as this tortured soul dreadfully awaiting the death of her Aunt Adelaide, played by Mary Looram (Like Father, Braid). As Aunt Adelaide slowly withers away in hospice, Iris continues her day to day routines of working in an antique shop, and scrolling online for connections through an online dating app. However, Iris has an ulterior motive behind her digital search for suitors, and it’s not love. Iris has a hunger, and she needs to feed. On every date she goes on, she sizes her match up and determines their strength of character on a criteria of what she considers basic human decency. And if any of her dates fail to meet her standards, then that’s the end of them. They’re dinner. That’s just how Iris operates.

But complications arise when Iris meets Tom, played by Grant MacDermott (Hustlers, Mr. Robot), at a support group meeting for people dealing with the lingering effects of grief. Tom is a good hearted man coping with crippling trauma. As their chaste relationship develops, Iris is confounded by a debilitating emotional dilemma. She yearns for the love she once lost, but recognizes the potential in having a strong bond with Tom. Unfortunately, her primal nature exposes itself in the heat of lust, causing her deep seated vampirism to emerge and overtake her instincts. So she can never truly express her true feelings to Tom without it resulting in his death. What’s a timeless girl to do in the big city?

THE MYSTERY OF A BURYAT LAMA, directed by Elena Demidova

The documentary film «THE MYSTERY OF A BURYAT LAMA», directed by Elena Demidova, tells a story of one of the most famous lamas, Pandido Khambo Lama Dashi Dorzho Itigelov. His body is recognized as one of the sacred Buddhist objects of Russia and is being kept in the Ivolginsky Datsan. The Buddhist monks approach him as a living person.

Itigelov was born in 1852 and began his religious education at the age of sixteen years. In 1911, he was appointed the twelfth Pandido Khambo Lama as the Head of Russian Buryat Buddhists. Between 1913 and 1917, Itigelov was prominent in the spiritual life of Russian Empire. He took part in the Tercentenary celebrations of the House Romanov and opened first Buddhist temple in St. Petersburg. During First World War Itigelov presided over the society of "Buryat brothers", an organization helping the Russian army. After October Revolution, Itigelov resigned as head of the Buddhists. In 1927, aged seventy-five years, he asked other lamas to begin meditation ceremonies and funeral rites, since he said he was about to die. Itigelov left a testament asking to be buried as he was at the time of his death, sitting in lotus posture. On September 11, 2002, Itigelov's body was eventually exhumed in the presence of the leaders of the Buddhist Traditional Sangha of Russia and transferred to Ivolginsky Datsan.

THE CREEPY LINE a film by M.A.Taylor 2018

"A film that Google does not want you to see  - filmfestivals.com Best for Fest"

An eye-opening documentary, The Creepy Line reveals the stunning degree to which society is manipulated by Google and Facebook and blows the lid off the remarkably subtle – hence powerful – manner in which they do it.

The Creepy Line is a title culled from the words of former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, when during a 2010 interview he explained Google’s code of conduct: “The Google policy on a lot of things is to get right up to the creepy line and not cross it.”

However, as Dr. Robert Epstein explains in the film, “Google crosses the creepy line every day”.

Offering first-hand accounts, scientific experiments and detailed analysis, The Creepy Line examines what is at risk when these two tech titans have free reign to utilize the public’s most private and personal data to manipulate society.

There is no question that the “creepy line” is getting ever-creepier, and that the tech giants have crossed it.

The Sconfini section to be replaced by Orizzonti – Extra

Starting today, Monday January 18th, registration is open for the films to be selected for the 78th Venice International Film Festival (1 – 11 September 2021) directed by Alberto Barbera and organized by La Biennale di Venezia.

To be admitted to the selection, the pre-selection entry form online must be completed online on or before June 11th 2021 (or on or before May 31st 2021 for the VR projects), following the instructions in the Regulations of the 78th Venice Film Festival, now online at the following address: https://www.labiennale.org/en/cinema/2021/regolamento.

One of the innovations to be found in the Regulations of the 78th Venice Film Festival is a new section that will replace Sconfini, while maintaining some of its primary characteristics. It will be called Orizzonti Extra, and its very title characterizes it as an extension of the competitive section focusing on new trends in world cinema, which over the years has helped to introduce and launch authors who have become firmly established. Less constrained by standards of length and format, Orizzonti Extrawill offer a selection of works no limits of genre, duration and destination, as long as they last more than 60 minutes. Furthermore, each film must be accompanied and followed by encounters with the auteurs and cultural figures. Finally, a jury of spectators will award a prize to the best film in the section, following criteria and procedures to be announced.

All films submitted must be recently produced, completed not prior to 12 September 2020, and must not have been presented earlier in any other format or length, not even as a work-in-progress, for any selection in previous editions of the Venice International Film Festival.

As a consequence of the particolar situation caused by the Covid-19 emergency, the Direction of the Festival reserves the right of considering also films completed before 12 September 2020, as long as they have been produced after 7 September 2019, and provided that  they have not had any form of commercial distribution or exhibition on the Internet and that they have not been already submitted with regative result to the selection of the 2020 edition of the Festival.

The sections of the 78th Venice Film Festival will be:

  • Venezia 78
  • Out of Competition
  • Orizzonti
  • Orizzonti Extra
  • Venice Classics
  • Venice VR Expanded

The Venice Production Bridge is confirmed as part of the Venice Film Festival. The film market not only gives continuity to the services heretofore developed (Industry Gold Club, Venice Gap Financing Market, Business Centre, Digital Video Library and VPB Market Screenings, Final Cut in Venice, Book Adaptation Rights Market), it is also an opportunity for meeting and networking for every category of professional involved in the production of films.

Also online, on the website www.labiennale.org, are the regulations for accreditation at the 78th Venice Film Festival for the following categories:

  • Industry
  • Online VPB
  • Film Delegation
  • Cinema
  • University students

For the selection process, the Director of the Venice Film Festival Alberto Barbera relies on the collaboration of the following experts: Paolo Bertolin, Giulia D'Agnolo Vallan, Bruno Fornara, Mauro Gervasini, Oscar Iarussi, Elena Pollacchi, Angela Prudenzi, Emanuele Rauco, Marina Sanna and, with more specific involvement, Gianluca Arnone, Violeta Bava, Angela Bosetto,  Francesco Giai Via, Federico Gironi, Peter Shepotinnik, Alessandra Speciale and Carla Vulpiani.

For the Venice VR Expanded section, Michel Reilhac and Liz Rosenthal, for Biennale College Cinema, Savina Neirotti and Jane Williams, while the programme coordinator for the Venice Production Bridge is Pascal Diot.

New York: New Directors New Films 2020 at MoMA

$

In its  2020  hybrid format, New York Film Festival reached a national online audience  of 70,000  in addition to local  drive in viewers and retained its status as a show case for the most important contemporary films. The 49th edition of 3the New Directors / New Films (ND/NF) festival staged from   December 9-20  by the Museum of Modern Art and the Film Society of Lincoln Center (FLC) presented the perspective of how filmmakers from all over the world visualize current issues and the future. It offered 24 features and 10 short films over 12 days to a nationwide audience through the FLC virtual cinema platform. Filmmakers’ views were reflected in  many debut productions with stylistic and structural approaches negating the often-standard manner of linear film making and its narratives. Their work brought to the fore powerful, surreal, and dreamlike elements while often retaining the topical relevance of the themes selected. They forced viewers to consider intended or unintended conceptual gaps and engage in reflection. The visuals were frequently presented in a fragmented way reflecting the   chaotic and conflictual state of affairs in today’s societies where an anchor of certainty is often absent. As the poet  Yeats observed in his prescient poem written in 1919, The Second Coming, “Things fall apart, the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world ”. As articulated by La Frances Hui, MoMA’s curator of films and co-chair of  ND/NF, “We are excited to take our festival virtual and celebrate this class of new directors who embody the innovative and nimble spirit essential for invigoration.”  However, the online presentation of outstanding films will hardly revive theatrical distribution as I suggested half a year ago in my own Farewell to Movie Theatres*. The 2020 ND/NF edition continues the festival’s  focus on the international, with a selection of the best productions, often major award winners, from film festivals like Berlin, Locarno, Rotterdam, Sundance, and Venice.

Collective,  Alexander Nanau, 2019, Romania

Collective is a masterpiece of documentary investigative reporting going beyond the customary documentation of state sponsored corruption and the failure to engage in corrective action. In an accidental fire in a Bucharest nightclub 27 people were killed and more than 40 perished afterwards from their injuries in hospitals due to medication provided that proved useless. Up to 95% of the disinfectants applied to the burns had been diluted to increase the profit of the vendors. Burn victims developed severe infections and died.  Journalists researching the disaster uncovered and documented widespread corruption in the state funded  hospital system, coverups by  politically appointed officials of the crimes, money laundering, violations of mandated medical care procedures Romania had to follow as a member of the European Union, obfuscation and denial of facts by medical executives and other professionals, and complete disregard by local pharmaceutical corporations of health considerations. Nanau  was able to track and document the work of journalists and that of  a new minister of health who wanted to  clear up the corrupt system but was hampered by the established network of vested interests preventing action. The National Liberal party retained power in an election despite it being the backbone of ongoing systemic corruption in the health system and  widespread media reporting about the health scandal and those responsible for it.

Atlantis,  Vaetiyn Vasyanovich, 2019, Ukraine

In 2025, one year after the end of a war between Ukraine and Russia, Sergy, a decommissioned Ukrainian soldier survives in the Eastern Ukrainian Donbass region which had been devastated by the war. He first works in a derelict steel mill but loses his job because of the mill’s closure. Sergy then finds work driving water trucks in a sector where the water supply has been totally polluted, and helps a foreign NGO agent in exhuming, identifying, and burying Ukrainian and Russian soldiers, as well as civilians, from mass graves. There is little human interaction or communication in the film, nor change in the actors’ presentation of their characters. The actors were cast in large part because of their actual war experiences. The precisely shot black and white cinematography drives Atlantis, with dystopian images of burned out factories, abandoned decrepit apartment buildings, and social isolation resultant from the lack of living people.  Sergy is barely alive, facing destruction and death all around him. As he says, he once had a future but sees no possible change or meaning  now.  Atlantis  is a compelling production, in part because Vasyanovich has stripped  Atlantis to bare bone essentials.

Identifying Features, Fernanda  Valadez, 2020, Mexico and Spain

This subdued but superb portrait of a mother, Magdalena, searching for her missing son who has left Mexico with his companion to migrate to the United States, presents a well-paced story with documentary overtones. Magdalena’s quest to find her son finds her overcoming all obstacles posed by officials declaring him dead despite no clear evidence and the conflict ridden conditions in the region she passes through near the border.  In his very impressive first feature, Valadez focuses on Magdalena’s  persistence in finding out what happened to her son rather than the crimes and civil chaos caused by drug trafficking and the failings of government efforts to protect the public. These features are prominent in many films about migration from Mexico but, though important, remain in the background of Identifying Features. Many migrants trying to reach the US perish before they ever reach the border. The audience accompanies Magdalena in her painstaking investigation retracing her son’s passage, and learns how corpses and possessions are  identified, how busloads of people are hijacked and killed while officials remain silent, how the disappearance of people and their fate  is commonly accepted, and how  areas close to the border, presumably controlled by drug cartels, are so dangerous that residents simply abandon them. Daniel, having been previously deported from the US, accompanies  Magdalena on the last stretch of her search, hoping to find his own loved ones,  his parents. But the childhood home is abandoned,  and armed militia chase Magdalena and Daniel away.  The feature has a surprise ending which logically fits with Valadez’s story of individuals dislocated by forces beyond their control.

Red Moon Tide, Lois Patiño, 2020, Spain

During 2020, Red Moon Tide had its word premiered in the Berlinale’s Forum section and has been shown at more than thirty other international film festivals, receiving ten rewards to date. The director Lois Patiño, who also wrote the script and did the cinematography. This feature is a brilliant exercise of film making driven by the power of visual images. As in some other ND/NF selections, dialogue and the spoken word play a minimal role, as do personal exchanges. Red Moon Tide explores a mystical universe and the fate of Rubio, a diver who rescues bodies of shipwrecked people.  In Patiño’s words, “ We move across a limbo in the film between life and death, between the imaginary and the real. Here the dead don’t leave, they stay with us, forming a bond between the living and the dead and preventing closure of mourning if there is no body”. Thus, “everybody is paralyzed, lost deep in their own minds.”  Before he set the film in a small Galician coast village, Patiño interviewed its people who suggested that “Here, the dead do not leave, they stay with us”.

In Red Moon Rising the village and its residents  seems to be frozen in time, providing little movement and even less communication. They are stationery and mute  compared to some errant animals and the constant changes of the tide.  A  voiceover provides a fragmentary narrative about loss and seems  looped.  Rubio’s disappearance in a supposed struggle with a sea monster has left the village in a limbo and arrested their passage of time.  Immured between life and death, the living and the deceased in the village are caught up in silent thoughts and the persistent mourning of Rubio. Three witches appear in this phantom world to solve the mystery.  Patiño transcends the border between the real, imagination, and the unconscious through meticulous compositions of frequently surreal images which have a stunning impact. They carry more weight and appeal than accounts of meanings would and leave it up to the audience to ascertain what they see . After all, in the state of mourning silence prevails over speech.

JEWISH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS TO THE BIG SCREEN WITH STARS, DRAMAS, AND SENSATIONAL TRUE STORIES

From star-studded features, gripping historical dramas, and stories of iconic Jewish trailblazers and innovators, the Jewish International Film Festival (February 17 – March 24) returns for another year of spectacular Jewish cinema from around the world.

Featuring 51 films from 19 countries, the Festival builds on over 30 years of bringing the best of Jewish cinema to Australia, presenting 29 features, 19 documentaries, and episodes from TV series to audiences in SydneyMelbournePerthBrisbane, and Canberra.

“I am delighted to present our vibrant 2021 program, now back in cinemas. This year’s program celebrates the richness and diversity of Jewish culture around the world. The line-up includes Australian premieres of fifty films and three series; as usual split equally between Israeli and diaspora productions, with nineteen countries represented on screen. From deeply personal documentaries on the trailblazers who changed the world, to touching true stories illuminating the untold stories from our history, as well as some truly impressive star-studded films, JIFF 2021 will reach all ages across the full spectrum of politics and religion,” said Jewish International Film Festival Artistic Director, Eddie Tamir.

OPENING AND CLOSING NIGHTS

Kicking off the Festival is winner of Best Film at the Ophir Awards (Israeli Oscars), Incitement – a timely film mirroring the radicalised final days of the Trump-era, revealing the forces which incited a young Orthodox law student to assassinate the Israeli Prime Minister in 1995 and effectively doom the peace process that would have changed the Middle East.

The Festival will close by premiering the first two episodes of the global phenomenon, Shtisel, season three. Starring Shira Haas (Orthodox), the series, follows a Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) family in Jerusalem as they reckon with love, loss, and the daily doldrums of life.

STAR POWER

Hollywood legends unite to pay tribute to multi-Academy Award winning director, Alan Pakula (To Kill a Mockingbird, Sophie’s Choice, All the President’s Men), whose films launched many of their careers. Featuring interviews with Meryl Streep (Sophie’s Choice), Jane Fonda (Klute), Harrison Ford (Presumed Innocent), Robert Redford (All the President’s Men), and Dustin Hoffman (All the President’s Men), to name a few – Alan Pakula: Going for Truth tells the rich and deeply personal story of one of Hollywood’s greatest directors, before his tragic death in 1998.

Starring Golden Globe nominee and Australian film star, Guy Pearce (Momento), and Danish actor, Claes Bang (Dracula), The Last Vermeer is a post-World War II feature following an Army officer (Bang) tasked with investigating paintings that fell into Nazi possession during the war. A notorious Dutch art dealer (Pearce) is tried for selling the Nazis a valuable masterpiece by Johannes Vermeer, but pleads his innocence by claiming it was a forgery.

WOMEN

Distinctly female stories are explored in this year’s program. From multi-Academy Award winning director, Freida Lee Mock (Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision), comes Ruth – Justice Ginsburg In Her Own Words. It tells the story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who despite having “three strikes” against her – being Jewish, a woman, and a mother – went from a top-of-the-class law graduate struggling to find work to a Supreme Court Justice who changed the world.

Multi-award winner at Tribeca Film Festival, as well as Israel’s submission to the Best International Feature Film category at the upcoming Academy Awards – Asia stars Primetime Emmy Award nominee Shira Haas (Orthodox) as a girl determined to spend her final days as a rebellious, free-spirited teenager despite her degenerative disease, all with the help of her mother (Alena Yiv).

And from the Official Selection of Toronto International Film Festival and South by South West comes Shiva Baby, a playful and sex-positive coming-of-age story following a directionless college student forced to juggle her pushy relatives, a successful ex-girlfriend, and a surprise appearance from her sugar daddy, his accomplished wife, and their baby at a family shiva.

TRUE STORIES

Films taking an unflinching look at some of the world’s most controversial figures include: They Call Me Dr. Miami, a nuanced portrait of Dr. Michael Salzhauer – an American plastic surgeon who rose to social media fame with viral Snapchat videos and by livestreaming tummy tucks and breast augmentations online. And from Jesse Dylan (son of musician Bob Dylan) comes Soros, the life and career of Hungarian-born, American billionaire investor and philanthropist, George Soros, whose progressive politics have made him a target for America’s far-right.

Stories revisiting World War II include: When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, based on a best-selling trilogy for children, following a Jewish family fleeing Berlin in the 1930s, as seen through the innocent eyes of their nine-year-old daughter; Love, It Was Not, which examines whether the relationship between an Auschwitz prisoner and an SS guard was genuine; and Adventures of a Mathematician, the story of Polish-born mathematician, Stan Ulam, who moved to the United States and joined the Manhattan Project to build the hydrogen bomb.

Cultural divides are explored in Breaking Bread, a documentary about the A-sham Food Festival, a yearly event in the mixed city of Haifa that invites Arab and Jewish chefs to set aside politics and collaborate on new dishes. With unprecedented access to high-ranking government officials, the story of the United States’ thirty-year effort to secure peace in the Middle East is revealed in The Human Factor, through the perspective of six American negotiators. Til Kingdom Comes takes a deep-dive into the phenomenon in which American Evangelical Christians offer support to Israel, only because they believe Israel will play a part in the return of the Messiah and bring upon their version of the apocalypse to the world.

Based on the true immigration story of Ophir Award-nominated writer and director, Evgeny Ruman, Golden Voices is an absurd tragi-comedy about a veteran Soviet voice-dubbing duo struggling to make a new life in Israel with their new jobs at an erotic phone line and an illegal dubbing operation.

DRAMAS

Other cinematic dramas in the festival line-up include: Persian Lessons, following a Jewish man who, by falsely claiming he’s Persian instead of Jewish, narrowly escapes execution and becomes tasked with teaching a camp officer how to speak Persian, despite not knowing a single word of it himself. Official Selection of both Cannes Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival, as well as having won and been nominated for several awards at the Ophir Awards, is Here We Are, a touching coming-of-age story following a father struggling to let go of his autistic, young adult son about to enter a specialised care home.

Thou Shalt Not Hate, which swept up multiple awards at Venice International Film Festival, is a powerful reflection of the Nazi legacy in contemporary Italy. It follows a Jewish surgeon and son of a Holocaust survivor who, because of his guilt, hires a young woman as his housekeeper after letting her father die in a car accident because he had a swastika tattoo on his chest.
