IFFI 51, Goa, 16-24 January, 2021, 08: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) non-fiction film In Our World to be premièred

This first-of-its-kind documentary has been directed and produced by Shreedhar, of Shred Creative Lab, winner of 43 national and international awards, for creative excellence

The film gives ASD a humane face by highlighting the many shades of autism through the narratives of three children in the beginning of the New Year. This documentary has been directed and produced by ace film-maker Shreedhar B.S., of Shred Creative Lab – winner of 43 national and international awards for creative excellence.

This film documents the lives of three autistic children, explored through their day-to-day lived reality, to unpack their world and bring about a nuanced understanding so we can all co-exist with love and respect. With in-depth, semi-structured, candid interviews of parents, therapists; their day-to-day activities like swimming classes, horse-riding and music lessons; their special moments with parents, all converge into a narrative that spells hope. This film goes beyond mere documentation of their lives to garner a nuanced understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It unveils their experiences, their daily negotiations and trials to tell the world that they do not need sympathy; rather need to be understood and accepted for who they are; that we need to understand their world in order to co-exist as equals, with respect and love.

Director and Producer of the documentary, Shreedhar B.S., said “The way we live right now suggests there are two different worlds: Of “them” and “us.” They, who are misunderstood by Us. This film is that window to see a world which needs to be understood in all its non-conformist ways with love and charter a path to assimilate them in one world, in one universe, where we all co-exist with love and mutual respect.”

Shreedhar B.S. (also known as Shred), director of Shred Creative Lab Private Limited since 2013, has over 22 years of comprehensive experience in films, television/digital content, branding, and marketing. Known for innovative and disruptive ideas, Shred has worked closely with international brands such as Turner Broadcast UK, National Geographic - International, Fox, Ford - APAC, BMW - India, Sony Motion Pictures - London/USA and many more. Shred, earlier, was the Director of Salt Studios Private Limited and Creative Director for the National Geographic Channel, as well as Fox International Channels.

Founded by former creative director for Fox Network of channels, Shred started SCL in 2013 as a creative studio catering to broadcast- branding, formerly known as Shred Inc. His vision is to create innovative and path-breaking visual communication. SCL has grown organically over the years, moving beyond the borders of broadcast branding and diversified into other creative branches like films, production for digital and television content and designing for products. Backed by an eclectic mix of dedicated creative directors, motion and graphic designers, animators, VFX experts and marketers, spread across Argentina, Philippines and India, SCL today stands out of the crowd as an exclusive studio that is a one-stop-shop for everything creative, from start to finish. SCL’s visual identity for Zee Punjab won a Promax India 2020 award for Best Brand Image Design and Best Logo Design Across Multiple Media. Furthermore, the brand song composed for Zee Biskope fetched an e4m Indian Content Marketing award for Best Branded Content Marketing on Television, 2020.

10th Annual Festival to Take Place November 10-14, 2021

$10,000 Cash Prizes Each for Best Narrative Feature and Best Documentary Feature

The Napa Valley Film Festival (NVFF) taking place November 10-14, 2021 is now accepting film submissions for its 10th annual iteration. NVFF showcases an outstanding presentation of independent filmmaking, while also building a strong sense of community around the art of visual storytelling. Film screenings and networking events are accompanied by Napa Valley’s world-class food, wine, and hospitality. Visiting filmmakers interact with audiences at screenings and intimate events while enjoying industry panels, culinary demonstrations, wine-tastings, festival parties, and more.

“We look forward to welcoming everyone back to Napa Valley later this year as we celebrate our 10th anniversary,” said Michael Polenske, Cinema Napa Valley CEO & Creative Director. “After attending the last nine festivals as a guest and sponsor, I’m excited to join the team for such a tremendous milestone and we cannot wait to showcase an amazing programming slate for our audiences this year.”

NVFF programmers will select up to 90 independent films of any genre to be screened alongside sneak peeks of studio releases and award season contenders. As a nod to local food and wine culture, NVFF will also showcase a Culinary Cinema category of both shorts and features focusing on, or specifically highlighting, topics such as the culinary arts, viticulture, or mixology.

Feature length films (50 minutes or longer) can be programmed in one of the following sections: Narrative or Documentary Features Competition (U.S. productions only), Verge (foreign and domestic productions) or Special Presentations and Culinary Cinema (foreign and domestic productions). The core Narrative and Documentary Features Competitions are juried, as is Verge, a separate selection of bold, eclectic, and boundary-pushing films.

Short films (narrative and documentary, under 30 minutes) are programmed in curated content-centric collections. Separate juries present awards for Best Narrative Short and Best Documentary Short.

The 16-18 films in NVFF’s U.S. Narrative and Documentary Feature Competition categories (approximately 8 in each section) vie for the titles of Best Narrative Feature and Best Documentary Feature. Both of these awards accompany a $10,000 cash prize. The films’ directors also participate in NVFF’s unique and educational Artists-in-Residence Program, which includes interactive master classes with industry leaders and networking opportunities at festival receptions, winemaker dinners, and parties in premiere wine country destinations.

Past industry speakers and panelists for the Artists-in-Residence Program include producer/actress Kyra Sedgewick, casting director Mary Vernieu (Betty Mae Casting), writer/director/actor Jim Rash (The Descendants, The Way Way Back), producer Christine Vachon (Killer Films), director T.J. Martin (Undefeated), writer/actor Jenny Lumet (Rachel Getting Married), producer Suzanne Farwell (The Intern, The Holiday), and actor/producer Nnamdi Asomugha (Crown Heights).

Filmmakers can submit projects exclusively through FilmFreeway. For early submissions with discounted entry fees, the Early Bird Deadline is February 18. The Regular Deadline takes place on March 26, followed by the Late Deadline on April 23. The final opportunity to submit a film for consideration is marked by NVFF’s Extended Deadline, June 4. For more information on how to submit, visit https://www.napavalleyfilmfest.org/

The 51st edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) will honour the Italian cinematographer Vittorio Storaro with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement award, at the opening ceremony, scheduled to be held tomorrow (January 16, 2021).

He is well-known for the film The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970). He is noted for films like The Conformist (1970), Last Tango in Paris (1972), 1900 (1976), Apocalypse Now (1979), Reds (1981), The Last Emperor (1987), Dick Tracy (1990), Café Society (2016) and Wonder Wheel (2017).

Storaro has received three Oscar Awards for Best Cinematography, for the films Apocalypse Now (1979), Reds (1981), and The Last Emperor (1987), and is one of three living persons who have won the award three times.Apocalypse Now was Storaro’s first collaboration with Francis Ford Coppola. The story takes place during the war in Vietnam. A U.S. army captain is sent to Cambodia on a secret mission to find and assassinate a renegade American colonel who allegedly has gone insane.

Principal cinematography stretched over 15 months, mainly at practical locations in the Philippine Islands. The all-star cast, included Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen and Harrison Ford. Apocalypse Now earned five 1979 Academy Awards, including best picture, director and cinematographer. Vittorio also earned BSC and BAFTA nominations. A precious quote from the man himself, "Wherever you put the camera, wherever you put your canvas to make a painting, the moment you use this kind of light, for example, you say something very specific. It is happening whether we know it or not, because of its energy. The main problem is if you know it or don’t. If you know the meaning, if you know the fact that natural light is energy, and what is energy? It’s a frequency of waves. Those waves arriving to us. Not only through eyes, but through our entire body. It’s scientifically proven that our blood pressure, our metabolism is changing according to the kind of vibration it receives. When you’re making a photograph, a painting or a film, and you use some kind of light or some kind of color, you’re sending a message. If you don’t know it, you’re doing it according to how you feel is right. But if you’re aware of it, if you studied the symbology, physiology, dramaturgy of light or color, you can use them like a musician using do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do. You’re using red, orange, yellow, blue, violet."

Virtual production
“If you need a beach you bring the beach to the studio!”

The pandemic has transformed the drama production landscape, potentially for years to come. Is shooting against a screen the answer?

The role of the producer is in transition and a year of restrictions has called for creative solutions with innovative ways of producing and financing ahead. Virtual production is rapidly transforming production pipelines across the industry. How will these new tools be adopted for TV? What are the challenges and how will it affect the creative outcome? Johanna Koljonen, media analyst and author of the Nostradamus report, in conversation with Kjartan Thor Thordarson, CEO Sagafilm, Patrick Nebout and Henrik Jansson-Schweizer from Dramacorp in development with Whiskey on the Rocks.

Nordic Secrets

Can Public Service TV lift our spirits, make us wiser, give us hope and unite us as a species around a better common future? What can the industry learn about the future from its Nordic past?

The Nordic countries have undergone an extraordinary journey from being among the poorest regions in Europe to becoming among the most peaceful, democratic and stable countries in the world. Danish writer, futurist and philosopher Lene Rachel Anderson takes us on a historical journey where aesthetic education and shared common stories have created the framework of our societies’ sustainability.

As climate change, a global pandemic, economic upheaval and exponential technologies toss our civilization around, do we have the Public Service television that we need? What can the film and TV industry learn from the Nordic past? What is the Nordic countries' secret and what should be the purpose of Public Service TV in a time of great challenges and changes?

Keynote session by Lene Rachel Anderson followed by a conversation with Johanna Koljonen. The session in presented in collaboration with Sweet Chili Enterainment.
