Sedona International Film Festival Postponed Until June

The surging COVID-19 pandemic in Arizona and across the country and in anticipation of the availability of the approved coronavirus vaccines has prompted the postponement of the 27th annual Sedona International Film Festival from Feb. 20-28 to June 12-20.

Pat Schweiss : “We made the responsible decision to postpone the Festival. The good news is that having the Festival in June also opens up some great opportunities to reinstate features we had canceled and introduce new ones,” said Executive Director Pat Schweiss. “We also felt that with vaccines becoming available, it would give us all a greater level of confidence to bring people together. Our health and safety protocols will remain in place.”

Schweiss said that among the new offerings would be outdoor screenings of films and events “at venues throughout Sedona where we can enjoy Arizona’s great weather while watching tremendously creative films and remaining socially distant.”

“And, we’re very excited to announce our inaugural screenplay competition,” he added.  Categories include feature screenplay, short screenplay, one-hour TV pilot, half-hour TV pilot and Arizona screenplays. Quarterfinalists, semifinalists and finalists will be announced early next year.

The change in the Festival date still means a diverse range of full-length features, shorts, documentaries and foreign films sure to have something for everyone.  A virtual component for online screening of films will be part of this year’s Festival as will opportunities for patrons who would prefer not to attend public screenings to purchase Virtual Screening Passes.

“Our selection committees are currently screening more than 1,000 films that have been submitted to select around 100 films for the Festival,” he said.

Modifications at screening venues will ensure appropriate social distancing and masks will be required for films scheduled at the Mary D. Fisher Theater, Sedona Performing Arts Center (SPAC) and the two largest theaters at Harkins 6.

            Additional modifications include:

• To eliminate waiting lines and congregating at the theaters, pass holders and individual ticket buyers will be able to choose their seats. Staggered start times will allow filmgoers to move directly to their seats when the doors open.

• Masks will be required in all venues and staff and volunteers will have their temperature taken every day.

• Northern Arizona Healthcare professionals will be on site to monitor safety protocols and be available to answer questions.

Schweiss said that filmmaker workshops will be offered both on-site, with attendance limited and social distancing in place, and online.  A full schedule of workshops will be available in May.

“We are moving with an abundance of caution and an equal abundance of excitement because we are seeing some incredible films coming our way and the new features will add another level to the Festival film experience,” Schweiss said.

Gold Passes offering unlimited films for live viewing and Virtual Screening Passes will go on sale in early spring with Early Bird Discounts.  Single tickets will go on sale at a date to be announced.  There will be no 10-and-20 ticket packages this year “because, given the reduced seat capacity in each theater, we can’t guarantee seats will be available if the theaters reach capacity.”

The complete lineup of films will be available early in 2021.

Berlinale 2021 twofold: Industry Online Offer in March, Public Event in June

Due to the current COVID-19 situation, the 71st Berlin International Film Festival has developed a new festival format for 2021 and is pleased to be able to hold the festival for the industry and the public. The industry platforms European Film Market, Berlinale Co-Production Market, Berlinale Talents and the World Cinema Fund will kick off the 71st Berlinale in March with an online offer. In June, there will be a summer event with numerous film screenings for the public audiences – in cinemas as well as open air. The division allows to maintain the two supporting pillars: film market and festival.

“There is a great desire to meet face-to-face. The current situation does not allow a physical festival in February, at the same time it is important to offer the film industry a market within the first quarter of the year,” says Berlinale Executive Director Mariette Rissenbeek. “With the change in the festival format in 2021, we will have the chance to protect the health of all guests and to support the restart of the cinema industry. With the summer event, we want to celebrate a festival for the cinema and offer the Berlinale audience the long-awaited community experience of cinema and culture.”

The current process of selecting films for the Competition and the sections will be continued. The programme will be published in February and presented to the film industry at the virtual European Film Market (EFM) in March. An International Jury will watch the films in Berlin and will choose the prize winners. The winners and a selection of the films will be presented to the Berlin audience in the summer. To start off the summer event, the Berlinale is planning a festive opening.

“As an answer to the times in which we are living, we have decided to split our offer into two distinct, yet related events and in this way fulfil the mission of the Berlinale. While in March the film industry will be gathered (online) and will be able to support and give light to our selection, in summer – like a new start, 70 years after the first edition – our audiences will be able to celebrate the filmmakers and their teams, in theatres and under the open sky. This gives the opportunity to experience the different sections and profiles of the festival, to watch the films of the international Competition and to celebrate with the winners of the Golden and Silver Bears in a cheerful atmosphere,” says Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian.

The European Film Market (EFM) will now take place online from March 1 to 5. The Berlinale Co-Production Market is similarly relocating its activities from March 1 to 5 online. Berlinale Talents also welcomes its participants virtually to Berlin in this timeframe and, like the World Cinema Fund, it addresses the international specialist audience with digital programmes. More information on the offers and programme content for the industry will be communicated in the upcoming weeks.

Regarding the budget, the Berlinale is currently in talks with the partners as well as with the Minister of State for Culture and the Media (BKM). The BKM has already confirmed extra support for the Berlinale with funds from the special programme NEUSTART KULTUR (additional funding initiative in the field of culture and media).

Overall, the Berlinale would like to emphasise once again that the health and the well-being of all guests and employees come first in all aspects of the planning.

Filmfest Munich : understanding the Berlinale moves to sequential edition

In light of recent pandemic developments, the Berlinale (Berlin International Film Festival) has decided on a multi-part festival format in the upcoming edition, with industry elements in March and audience-only screenings in June. Given our experience in 2020 with the sequential FILMFEST MÜNCHEN POP-UP, we can only support this approach and send our colleagues our best wishes for next year‘s implementation of their festival.

At the same time, we see our plans for next year’s edition further strengthened by the developments in Berlin. We have been planning to design FILMFEST MÜNCHEN 2021 as a live festival with innovative cinema and open air elements all around the city of Munich. During our festival period from June 24 to July 3, 2021, we will offer premieres and encounters for the general public in Munich as well as the entire German film industry.

Festival director Diana Iljine: "We as a festival represent summer, sun, Munich – and face-to-face encounters. A central part of the revitalization of the entire German film and culture sector will take place at FILMFEST MUNICH next summer. We are looking forward to this and wish our Berlin colleagues great success with their plannings."

The nonprofit Sundance Institute announced today the showcase of new independent work selected across the Feature Film, Short Film, Indie Series and New Frontier categories for the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. The Festival will take place digitally via a feature-rich, Sundance-built online platform and in person on Satellite Screens across the country (public health permitting) from January 28-February 3, 2021. Additionally, Festival attendees can gather in virtual waiting rooms, participate in live Q&As, and congregate in new, inspired online environments to interact in a range of ways both new and familiar. The Institute shared details of how the Festival will meet audiences on the online platform and Satellite Screens earlier this month

The Sundance Film Festival is the flagship public program of Sundance Institute. Throughout the year the majority of the Institute's resources support independent artists around the world as they make and develop new work through access to Labs, direct grants, fellowships, residencies and other strategic and tactical interventions.

“Togetherness has been an animating principle here at the Sundance Institute as we’ve worked to reimagine the Festival for 2021, because there is no Sundance without our community,” said Sundance Institute Founder and President Robert Redford. “Under Tabitha's leadership, we've forged a new collective vision: one that honors the spirit and tradition of these invigorating yearly gatherings in Utah, while making room for imaginative new possibilities in a new online format.”

“Of course, the pandemic year demanded adaptation,” said Keri Putnam, Sundance Institute’s Executive Director. “On a deeper level, we also recognize the urgency of supporting independent storytellers at a time of great upheaval in the film and media fields. We’re proud this edition of the Festival is fiercely independent, and will reach people everywhere, celebrating both the theatrical experience at our Satellite Screens and streaming on our platform.”

“This Festival is a singular response to a singular year – both in design and curation – and we are excited about the new dimensions of possibility it will reveal. But at its core is something that speaks to our most enduring values,” said Tabitha Jackson, Director of the Sundance Film Festival. “For thousands of years humans have gathered to tell stories and make meaning. In this pandemic year we gather to celebrate a constellation of artists with unique perspectives that express this current moment and who together are saying, 'We exist. This is who we are. And this is what we see.'"

“The work in this year’s program is groundbreaking, imaginative, and formally daring,” said Kim Yutani, the Festival’s Director of Programming. “With over half the program made by first-time directors, a sense of discovery remains true to us at Sundance. This year's Festival presents irrefutable evidence that despite the challenges, the independent voice is as strong as ever.”

Day One films debuting on the platform to open the Festival will be Censor, CODAFleeOne for the Road, In The Same Breath, and Summer Of Soul (...Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised).

Son of Monarchs, screening in the NEXT section, has been named the winner of the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize.

Announced today: the full 2021 slate of works, including 72 feature-length films, representing 29 countries and 38 first-time feature filmmakers. 14 films and projects announced today were supported by Sundance Institute in development, through direct granting or residency Labs. 66 of the Festival’s feature films, or 92% of the lineup announced today, will be world premieres. These films were selected from 14,092 submissions including 3,500 feature-length films. Of the feature film submissions, 1,377 were from the U.S. and 2,132 were international. Director demographics are available in an editor’s note below.

The projects confirmed for the 2021 Sundance Film Festival are:

NEW FRONTIER

Since its launch, the Sundance Film Festival’s New Frontier has served as a showcase for dynamic, innovative work at the crossroads of film, art, and technology. At the Festival’s 2021 edition, a global audience will be able to engage with the works, the artists, and fellow Festivalgoers via a bespoke spatialized platform, developed in partnership with digital experience agency Active Theory and accessible via computer and VR headsets. The New Frontier Gallery hosts the complete slate of live performances, AR, VR, and other emerging media works. Cinema House is the Festival’s social, fully immersive cinema, and Film Party is an interactive bar with 6 screens and more intimate rooms available to the entire community of accredited Festivalgoers so that all can safely gather together, connecting via avatar with proximity audio and video chat.

2020 saw that the entire world can shift and leave humanity in an entirely new state of being. As we stand on the precipice of a new era, we need our artists and visionaries to illuminate the way forward,” said Shari Frilot, Senior Programmer and New Frontier Chief Curator. “The lineup of new media works this year challenge what we once knew to be true. Their works glisten with world building wisdom, and offer time machines that extract the cancer of colonial narratives planted deep within our biology.”

Frilot added, “More than ever, we need to gather our community in a meaningful way. This is why New Frontier has built three spatialized digital venues that orbit the earth right alongside the International Space Station. And at any time, Festivalgoers can take leave of the mothership to visit the astronauts aboard the Station, in the immersive experience Space Explorers: The ISS Experience, co-directed by Félix Lajeunesse and Paul Raphaël, or spend a night on earth, bar hopping in Amsterdam through IDFA DocLab’s do {not} play.

The Sundance Institute New Frontier Program is supported by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Unity Technologies, Adobe, Dell Technologies, The Walt Disney Studios’ StudioLAB, and Oculus from Facebook.

66,234 spectators watched 151 films from 50 countries at San Sebastian Festival’s 68th edition, attended by 2,626 accredited professionals, including 689 journalists from 376 media outlets and 1,185 film industry professionals (487 of whom participated online).

In last year’s rundown we opened with references to record audience attendance (178,687 spectators in 2019) and accreditation numbers (4,319 in 2019). But even then we warned that it was difficult to grow further and that San Sebastian Festival had been approaching its growth ceiling for years. We could never have imagined then that the percentages would drop between 30% and 70% at the 68th edition, and even less so that we would consider these figures to be positive.

But, indeed, in 2020 the Festival’s focus was elsewhere. Like so many other local cultural businesses and institutions, this was an edition marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and our aims were concentrated into three areas: guaranteeing that it was a safe edition for all participants, protecting the essence of the Festival concept, in other words, highlighting that the best place to screen a film is in a cinema and, lastly, making this an economically viable edition.

In addition to having registered no infections and having attracted the interest of more than 1,000 film industry professionals, as well as almost 700 journalists from 376 media outlets, the Festival introduced a number of structural changes from which it has emerged with flying colours, having also increased its online presence. In view of the results and the positive reception enjoyed by said measures, we are now considering whether to keep some of them in place, such as pre-assigned seating or combined online and physical activities for the film industry, once the pandemic is finally over. There is an overall perception that having held the Festival was enormously important for the Spanish film industry in general, the Basque industry in particular, and the international industry as a whole. Media outlets all over the world have praised our programme and organisation.

The pandemic, which continues to cast uncertainty over film festivals in 2021, is not the only challenge taken up by the Festival. Added to this are the conviction of its commitment to new talents, which is producing results earlier than expected in the coming together between participants at the Co-Production Forum, Nest, New Directors and the Official Selection, the Ikusmira Berriak residents and students at the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola; creation of the Thought and Discussion area, commitment to the gender identity report, which is now joined by a sustainability project; and, tied in with all of these initiatives, reaffirmation of its configuration as a Festival running all year round, which will be intensified thanks to its presence in and with the Tabakalera community throughout 2021.

Lastly, the Festival would like to thank the institutions, sponsors, film industry, media outlets and citizens for their support in one of its most complicated years.

2020 is almost over, and Sheffield Doc/Fest closed its 27th edition as a success. Together we produced and experienced a six-month programme (usually six days!) of screenings and discussions that offered a window to the world - from the cinema in Sheffield, and online from homes across the world.

As part of the Artistic Programme:

  • 115 titles from 50 countries around the world and representing 49 spoken languages made up our official selection this year, including the Retrospective “Reimagining The Land”, and a Lynne Sachs, Sarah Maldoror and Simplice Ganou Filmmaker Focus.
  • A 5 month online programme and 24 physical film screenings (All 60 Q&As conducted can be seen here on Selects in the UK).
  • Online programmes in partnership with Doc Alliance Films and Mubi, and with BFI Player in the New Year.
  • An online Arts Programme, “Ghosts & Apparitions”, featuring Maria Court & Trinidad Pilz, Kitty Clark, Paula Albuquerque, and Keiken whose Metaverse Messenger performance is available to view on our Youtube page.

“Thank you very much for all your care and the collaboration. It has been really great to navigate these surreal times together and to have my work included in an impressive selection of artists with such relevant works”

Paula Albuquerque, Overhead 21 (Netherlands)

“The breadth, length, and adventurous spirit of the titles you included are remarkable and the attention on the festival has been enormous.”

Lynne Sachs,  Filmmaker in Focus, A Film About A Father Who (USA)

It’s been a real privilege to be part of [the festival], and also to be part of the other filmmakers of the Ghosts & Apparitions strand which is an extraordinary curation.”

Hannah Jayanti, Truth or Consequences (USA)

As part of the Industry Programme:

  • Talks and Sessions featuring 100+ filmmakers, artists, funders, programmers and critics (programme available to watch for free on our Youtube page from January).
  • Over 1,000 meetings in our online MeetMarket programme for feature documentaries and around 500 meetings in the Alternate Realities Talent Market for non-fiction new-media creatives.

“Keep on with fantastic industry sessions and programmes! I think a real strength is the industry focus and the quality of content for those in the industry at any stage of their experience”

Delegate (anonymous via survey)

"I would really recommend the MeetMarket, it's definitely one of the key events for documentary filmmakers and producers in the world and the online experience was no exception".

Felipe Garrido & Nicolas Tabilo, Project: Drifting Images (Chile)

The MeetMarket is always very well-programmed, balancing a wide array of industry delegates with a meaningfully tailored approach to pairing them with projects. Even with the necessary switch to an online edition in 2020, the quality of the meetings remained high and the experience was warm, collegial and supportive”

Kellen Quinn, Producer (USA)

Since our first screenings in June, the films that had their World, International and European Premieres at Sheffield Doc/Fest have had 140+ selections in Film Festivals and Programmes across the globe, including at Art of The Real, Busan, Centre Georges Pompidou, Doclisboa, Doc NYC, Dok Leipzig, Edinburgh IFF, IDFA, Jihlava IDFF, Museum of Moving Image, RIDM and Zinebi, among many others. Some were also nominated for awards, including the Critics Choice Award, IDA Awards and BAFTA.

From our 2020 Audiences:

“Amazing range of docs. Absolutely loved it and learned and discovered so much.”

“It was wonderful to still be able to experience such a culturally rich and interesting event despite the circumstances. Proud of Sheffield, Showroom and Doc/Fest!”

“Outstanding thematic programming.”

Lots of variety in film programme: several shorts & full features added a lot to my experience. This year's programme also felt really international.”

We look forward to seeing everyone in Sheffield and online as we work towards a hybrid, and for next year extended, festival:Thursday 4 - Sunday 13 June 2021.

We’ll be back with news in January and in the meantime remain open for entries for our Film & Arts programme and our Marketplace.

From all the team at Sheffield Doc/Fest, we wish you a happy and healthy holiday.

Bring on 2021!

IRIS by Diana Rodriguez

USA - Fantastic drama thriller: 104 minutes - first feature film

Alice Kremelberg (Orange Is The New Black) stars as the eponymous Iris, and gives an outstanding lead performance as this tortured soul dreadfully awaiting the death of her Aunt Adelaide, played by Mary Looram (Like Father, Braid). As Aunt Adelaide slowly withers away in hospice, Iris continues her day to day routines of working in an antique shop, and scrolling online for connections through an online dating app. However, Iris has an ulterior motive behind her digital search for suitors, and it’s not love. Iris has a hunger, and she needs to feed. On every date she goes on, she sizes her match up and determines their strength of character on a criteria of what she considers basic human decency. And if any of her dates fail to meet her standards, then that’s the end of them. They’re dinner. That’s just how Iris operates.

But complications arise when Iris meets Tom, played by Grant MacDermott (Hustlers, Mr. Robot), at a support group meeting for people dealing with the lingering effects of grief. Tom is a good hearted man coping with crippling trauma. As their chaste relationship develops, Iris is confounded by a debilitating emotional dilemma. She yearns for the love she once lost, but recognizes the potential in having a strong bond with Tom. Unfortunately, her primal nature exposes itself in the heat of lust, causing her deep seated vampirism to emerge and overtake her instincts. So she can never truly express her true feelings to Tom without it resulting in his death. What’s a timeless girl to do in the big city?

During First World War Itigelov presided over the society of "Buryat brothers", an organization helping the Russian army. After October Revolution, Itigelov resigned as head of the Buddhists. In 1927, aged seventy-five years, he asked other lamas to begin meditation ceremonies and funeral rites, since he said he was about to die. Itigelov left a testament asking to be buried as he was at the time of his death, sitting in lotus posture. On September 11, 2002, Itigelov's body was eventually exhumed in the presence of the leaders of the Buddhist Traditional Sangha of Russia and transferred to Ivolginsky Datsan.

THE CREEPY LINE a film by M.A.Taylor 2018

"A film that Google does not want you to see  - filmfestivals.com Best for Fest"

An eye-opening documentary, The Creepy Line reveals the stunning degree to which society is manipulated by Google and Facebook and blows the lid off the remarkably subtle – hence powerful – manner in which they do it.

The Creepy Line is a title culled from the words of former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, when during a 2010 interview he explained Google’s code of conduct: “The Google policy on a lot of things is to get right up to the creepy line and not cross it.”

However, as Dr. Robert Epstein explains in the film, “Google crosses the creepy line every day”.

Offering first-hand accounts, scientific experiments and detailed analysis, The Creepy Line examines what is at risk when these two tech titans have free reign to utilize the public’s most private and personal data to manipulate society.

There is no question that the “creepy line” is getting ever-creepier, and that the tech giants have crossed it.

As 2021 approaches, the 18th Universe Multicultural Film Festival is now calling for entries from all over the world! The Universe Multicultural Film Festival will be held in the Palos Verdes Peninsula, south of Hollywood on April 2 - 4, 2021. The Palos Verdes Peninsula, located on the picturesque Pacific Coast south of greater Los Angeles, driving distance to Hollywood, the heart of the global film industry. As the top ethnic-themed international film festival, the Universe Multicultural Film Festival always takes its duty of providing the best platform for all multicultural communications through films. In different languages, different ethnic backgrounds, films have been carrying the art of expression. For the local audiences, this is an extremely rare opportunity to get to know world pluralistic culture through local screens.

Every year, hundreds of films from more than 40 countries are submitted to UMFF and compete for different film awards. The winner of each category will be determined by the Hollywood professional judges, and the certificate of finalist and award will be presented at the opening gala and award ceremony. All the films in the running have a chance to be shown to producers and fans from around the world during the festival. The UMFF committee will also arrange a question-and-answer session for planned attendees, allowing filmmakers to hear audience feelings face to face.

To help filmmakers around the world better realize their cinematic ideals, the three-day Universe Multicultural Film Festival features six special workshops. Film guests at the festival said the panels were valuable and rewarding. Six panels have become a tradition of UMFF, the committee will continue to set panels focused on film distributing, film marketing, screenplay writing, audition tutoring, and so on. These panels are covering all aspects of the film industry, in this way, any role of filmmakers can find suits own targeted panel, with the present professional Hollywood producer.

During the festival, the UMFF committee will make every effort to bring wonderful artistic moments to every participating guest, whether it is the opening reception with many film guests gathered together, the live performance of the scripts on the second day, or the red carpet and award ceremony on the third day. These artistic performances are also marked by professional judges on the spot for individual and group performers and serve as a competition to select the UMFF New Star award and the Crown of Maeya Cultural Ambassador. This would be the most effective promotion stage for performing arts talents, models, and new performers, so don’t miss such a great opportunity to shine!!

Outstanding scripts will be performed by Hollywood professional actors on the scene of the film festival, allowing filmmakers, producers, and directors from all over the world to appreciate the charm of scripts for the first time. Actors who are interested in participating in this segment can also sign up for live performances. The UMFF has always been adhering to the belief of opening a window to Hollywood for global filmmakers, striving to provide more possibilities to the future for more aspiring filmmakers.

Bowery Film Festival is Back

Bowery Film Festival returns in resilient spirits for its 2020 Edition in a flexible online format on the Xerb.TV streaming platform, available from December 14th through the 18th. Bowery was founded to showcase adventurous works that challenge commercial and audience expectations, and continues that mission even in a most unusual year for the arts. The week opens with a full block of unique quarantine shorts, many submitted via the festival’s Instagram competition earlier in the year. This “micro-short” competition was developed to offer an avenue for filmmakers to flex their ingenuity in the midst of isolation, creating self contained one minute shorts exploring the uncertain “new normal."

The festival also boasts several features and larger-scale shorts, including The Reception (starring Richard Kind & Skipp Sudduth), a bittersweet speculative film that questions the best course of action when society is shifting and politics turn ugly.

All tickets and screenings include zoom Q&A with filmmakers and talent. We look forward to seeing you all tonight!

POSTPONEMENT of the 27th Vesoul International Festival of Asian Cinemas in February 2022.

logo-fica.png

The pandemic is not abating around the world. So many uncertainties remain: opening of places of culture, restaurants, curfews, ...

First, we had to face the evidence of the impossibility of maintaining in person, the 27th edition of the Vesoul International Festival of Asian Cinemas, which was scheduled from January 26 to February 2, 2021.

Secondly, with our technical team, we tried to save the fiction and documentary competitions sections by keeping them online.

Faced with the categorical refusal of certain producers fearing the piracy of competitive films presented in world, international, European or French premieres, we also had to give up this alternative.

Thirdly, it is with infinite sadness that we had to make the decision to postpone the 27th FICA in Vesoul to February 2022.

This decision weighs heavily on us.

We were ready (final selection of all the films, the various juries constituted, catalog drawn up, ...).

It is death in the soul that we write these lines.

We wholeheartedly thank the institutional and private partners, as well as the public, for their loyal support to the Vesoul International Festival of Asian Cinemas and look forward to seeing them in February 2022.

Life is a fight. Hope!

36th interfilm and 13th KUKI Film Festivals wrapped

interfilm Berlin

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!

The longest and most extraordinary festival in interfilm's and KUKI's history was a tremendous success: Over 18,800 digital cinema seats were filled! This gets close to a regular edition (in numbers at least) and we therefore owe a huge thank you to all our viewers.

None of this would have been possible without a reliable digital platform. Special thanks go to our partner Sooner, without whom we would not have managed such a smoothly-run digital festival, especially since the "smart lockdown" was announced just 10 days before the festival was due to begin. We had to reshuffle the festival in the blink of an eye, reallocating budgets, tasking departments with entirely new roles and  cancelling all travel arrangements.

Such a radical restructuring of the festival is of course only possible if one's supporting institutions continue to stand by them. Therefore our heartfelt thanks also go to all our festival partners, funders and sponsors, first and foremost Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg, Creative Europe MEDIA and the German Federal Foreign Office!

The interfilm & KUKI team mastered this challenging year and the peculiar circumstances with flying colours. With glittery outfits, disco lights and confetti, we celebrated the start and end of the respective digital editions separately and yet (virtually) together.

The experiences we were able to make in the digital realm will surely serve us well in the near and distant future.  But even if the digital floodgates have now been cranked open, the bottom line remains the same: interfilm and KUKI are film festivals.

Film festivals belong in the cinema, to be shared and experienced by crowds of people interacting and exchanging. Therefore, our priority is and will continue to be focussed on striving for on-site experiences.

Incidentally, to support the cinemas, 20 percent of the proceeds from Sooner and interfilm will go to the cinemas originally scheduled for the festival.

But the most important thing about a film festival are the films themselves. Here, too, we must express our deepest gratitude to the filmmakers who made it possible for us to present their films in a digital context, who made themselves available for digital Q&As, who participated in our digital networking events, and who encouraged us in these uncertain times.

interfilm awarded prizes worth more than a total of 40,000 euros. We are particularly delighted by the strong resonance that many of the award-winner's received in their respective countries, for example in the Philippines ("Tarang") and in Hong Kong ("1 a.m. in Hong Kong") - click here for the laudations.

INTERFORUM masterclasses and panels are still online, as are the ceremonies for the opening and awards events and the Decolonial x interfilm Short Film Walk through Berlin's history of European and German colonialism.

The 13th KUKI Film Festival for Children and Youth also managed to produce a stupendous first-ever digital edition and streamed its 12 short film programs to more than 100 schools! KUKI transformed classrooms into festival cinemas for around 5,000 children and teenagers in schools and daycare centers all over Berlin and Brandenburg. All programs featured lively film talks and interviews with filmmakers, heaps of confetti, and the beating of a corona-pinata - making the KUKI Festival spirit really come alive.

And while we are super pleased with our first digital festival edition, we really can't wait to (hopefully) hold a physical festival once again next year at our cool cinemas with lively audiences, crazy parties, too many drinks and wonderfully irritating & inspiring talks.

X-Mess - a different take on Christmas

And the fine and fancy films just keep on coming:

The audacious short film program "X-Mess - a different take on Christmas" is available in our CoronaKino until the end of the year! The program features 11 shorts and costs a sweet 3.99 EUR on Vimeo.

"From awkward conversations with relatives on Christmas Eve to the last day of work before the holidays, this short film program compiles all the elements of the silly season that make it a time of celebration and chaos. Contemplation and charity? Forget it! Here, the clichés of a cozy Christmas are debunked alongside the glorification of motherhood and the Trojan Horse ..."

Rather than holding a virtual or hybrid event, Mammoth Film Festival (#MammothFF) has chosen to delay its fourth installment until 2022 in the hopes of returning to the annual event in its proper form.

The festival is responsible for debuting popular films that are currently streaming and trending across digital platforms, having been sold following their #MammothFF premiere. Over the last two years, featured titles have included Josh Duhamel's Buddy Games co-starring Olivia Munn, Kevin Dillon and Dax Shepard, Peter Facinelli's The Vanished starring Anne Heche and Thomas Jane, Zac Efron's series Off The GridThe Acquainted (U.S. festival premiere), and Tony Hawk's Pretending I'm A Superman, to name a few. James Lafferty and Stephen Colletti's original comedy series Everyone Is Doing Great, set to premiere on Hulu on January 13, 2021, debuted at the 2019 festival.

Thomas Jane, Anne Heche and Peter Facinelli

The festival is known for directorial debuts, impactful features, riveting documentaries, and incredible shorts, featuring notable, well-respected actors, as well as rising stars on the indie scene. Other attendees in recent years have included Rebel Wilson, Lesley Anne Brandt, Nina Dobrev, Michael Madsen, Ashley Greene, Giacamo Gianniotti, Lukas Haas, Hana Mae Lee, Kat Graham, Tara Wood, and many others, all of whom supported their projects at the fest.

Christian Madsen, Tara Wood and Michael Madsen

Festival co-founder and president Tanner Beard also won the most recent season of ABC's golf competition show Holey Moley, where he competed on behalf of the festival, and specifically, the Mammoth Media Institute.

"While we were grateful to experience the Mammoth Film Festival, one of the last events before the nationwide lockdown from COVID-19, MammothFF prides itself on bringing filmmakers, industry professionals, cinefiles and moviegoers together - in person - to share stories, knowledge, and handshakes,” comment founders Tanner Beard and Tomik Mansoori.

PÖFF24 in numbers: attendance over 100 000

90a055a5-bfa2-4b6e-97ff-3e5126b039b9.jpg

We are extremely glad to end this year with the news that regardless the extremely difficult year, we broke our attendance record as it's estimated that 101 833 physical and virtual attendances took place during #PÖFF24 and Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event.

With mentions in over 6000 articles in 71 languages detected by the Meltwater media monitoring service, the global potential media audience of the festival of 2020 stands at around 9.1 billion.

The festival estimates that 101 833 physical and virtual attendances took place setting a record for the industry events which saw over 35 000 virtual attendances, resulting from a record of 1600 accredited professionals.

As anticipated by the festival’s team, the ticket sales saw a notable drop this year with over 34 000 physical attendances and an estimated 19 000 virtual film viewings*, compared to last year’s 70 000 physical cinema attendances. The festival’s professionals’ film-watching platform had 9779 viewings.

A major shift took place with the virtual event attendances as Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event had over 800 virtual accreditations – a new record – and made several events available online without accreditation as well, including it’s a most popular event – the European Film Forum.
This resulted in over 3000 virtual attendances on the Elisa Stage platform, while the overall virtual attendance, including the virtual opening and closing ceremony transmission and nearly a hundred Q&A’s and interviews made for the PÖFF TV, rose to 35 478.

With mentions in over 6000 articles in 71 languages detected by the Meltwater media monitoring service, the global potential media audience of the festival of 2020 stands at around 9.1 billion. The festival accredited 161 journalists (68 foreign) and over 26 bloggers, while only 15 foreign journalists were able to attend the events physically this year due to travel restrictions and quarantine requirements.

Black Nights director Tiina Lokk commented: „It was a most difficult year and edition that will be remembered for a long time! What we suffered in loss of revenue, we made up in terms of global visibility – reaching completely new people this year thanks to going virtual. I believe that online is here to stay, though it will not beat the experience of physical attendance which will still very much remain our focus in the future!“

Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event director Marge Liiske commented: “Having organised a record attendance numbers' virtual industry event over five consecutive days in three parallel broadcasting channels, project presentations and meetings, showed us the potential of online in the future. We also feel really grateful for the industry professionals having such a strong sense of community and a powerful will of collaboration. I hope to meet and thank you all in person in 2021!”
