NUCLEAR FILM HIGHLIGHTS OF BERLIN 2016

During 5 days - from September 28th to October 2nd - the International Uranium Film Festival screened in Berlin's KulturBrauerei in Prenzlauer Berg 22 atomic films from 10 countries in the presence of the filmmakers.

This year in Berlin the Algerian film director Larbi Benchiha(link is external) presented his new documentary "Greetings from Mururoa"(link is external) (Bons baisers de Moruroa) that moved the audience. "No doubt: It was one the highlights of the 2016 Uranium Film Festival in Berlin", says festival's general director Norbert G. Suchanek. The topic of this film deals with the nuclear weapon tests that took place between 1966-1996 in French Polynesia.

"Benchiha provides the viewer a touching view in the personal stories of the veterans and the Polynesian inhabitants who lived there during those tests. Through their perception we learn what really happened there and the immense consequences it brought them today and also in a broader sense; the entire world. How a beautiful spot in the southern Pacific Ocean irreversible changed into a horrid nightmare because of nuclear technology and its devastating power", explains filmmaker and visual artists Tineke van Veen(link is external) who attended the Uranium Film Festival in Berlin and presented her also impressive work about Fukushima.

Tineke van Veen(link is external): "Larbi Benchiha has done a great job by giving these victims a voice and a face. His film varies with interviews and archival material, such as personal footage from the veterans. These 8mm videos appear very innocent of the situation in French Polynesia, but simultaneously we learn that the officials were well aware of the terrible effects of these nuclear tests. It is a documentary with a huge impact – a forgotten story that must be told to prevent and warn the future generations about nuclear power and technology."

Uranium Film Festival director Norbert Suchanek is confident that "Greetings from Mururoa" (Bons baisers de Moruroa) has a good chance to win the festival´s Yellow Einstein award next year, 2017.

Another candidate for one of the Uranium Film Festival's Yellow Einstein Awards of 2017 is "The Idealist" (Idealisten)(link is external), a Danish production by film director Christina Rosendahl(link is external), about another real "nuclear" horror story. On 21 January 1968, an American B-52 bomber crashed near Thule Air Base in Northwest Greenland. The plane carried four hydrogen bombs, three of which were recovered whilst the fourth bomb disappeared from the sea ice – and from all documents about the crash. Until a Danish journalist, Poul Brink, from a local radio station discovered that many of the Danish workers who were sent to Greenland as part of the clean-up operation, ‘Project Crested Ice’, had developed a range of skin diseases – including cancer. "This well done fiction based on facts and a terrific investigation has also a good chance to receive one of our Yellow Einstein Awards next year in Rio de Janeiro or Los Angeles (Hollywood)", says the Uranium Film Festival director.

José Herrera Plaza

The atomic bomb accident in Greenland happened exactly two years after a similar accident at the Southern coast of Spain (Almería). On January 17, 1966, a US B-52 bomber carrying four hydrogen bombs collided with a tanker plane over Spain. Both planes exploded, killing seven airmen and launching the four H-bombs into the sky. Three bombs dropped on the tomato farming village of Palomares. No nuclear explosion happened, but the impact detonated the explosive in two of the bombs, spreading plutonium for miles.

José Herrera Plaza's film about that terrible and nearly forgotten accident „Broken Arrow. Nuclear Accident in Palomares“(link is external) is clearly one of the must-see documentaries of the Uranium Film Festival that is now in its 6th year and has screened more than 300 films about nuclear issues around the globe. Filmmaker and book author José Herrera Plaza(link is external) presented his film this year in May at the Festival in Rio de Janeiro and now in Berlin.

Suchanek: "We try to convince him to present his incredible documentary also next year, 2017, in Hollywood. It is official fact that since 1950, there have been world wide at least 32 nuclear weapon accidents, known as Broken Arrows(link is external): the accidental launching, firing, detonating, theft, or loss of nuclear bombs."

DEVIL’S WORK by Director Miguel Silveira Another nuclear film highlight was DEVIL’S WORK(link is external) by Director Miguel Silveira deals with the use depleted uranium weapons:  A troubled 14-years-old boy grows increasingly isolated as he obsesses over the circumstances surrounding his father death his descent puts him on a dismal and potentially violent course that will lead to major truths and even greater questions. His father was a Soldier at the Golf War. He died because he was contaminated with Depleted Uranium. The film was Influenced by Professor Siegwart Horst Günther the "father" of the anti-uranium-weapons movement and who received the Nuclear-Free Future Award 2007. "It is the best movie about Depleted Uranium Weapons I have seen in my 20 years as activist against these weapons. I saw myself in that boy", says DU-expert Damacio A. Lopez, director of the International Depleted Uranium Study Team (IDUST) from New Mexico who watched the film Berlin.

Italian film director Matteo GagliardiHighlight number five in Berlin was of course the screening of  "Fukushima. A Nuclear Story"(link is external) and the following award ceremony at the last festival day. Italian film director Matteo Gagliardi received the festival's Yellow Einstein Award for his exceptional feature documentary. It is the story of an Italian journalist, Pio d’Emilia, who refused to abandon his job even when the nuclear danger was at its greatest; the doubts and fears of man in the days following the threefold tragedy; the search for the truth regarding what really happened inside the Fukushima Daiichi plant...

The next International Uranium Film Festival is scheduled for Spring 2017 in Los Angeles at the Raleigh Studios in Hollywood. The film entry is open. Submit your movies, documantaries en animated films about nuclear power, atomic bombs, radioactivity, uranium and nuclear risks. Deadline is January 31, 2017.

Siraj Syed reviews Doctor Strange: Surgery and sorcery go hand in hand

Siraj Syed reviews Doctor Strange: Surgery and sorcery go hand in hand Comics can be victims of overkill, especially when they traverse the distance from page to screen. Casting might be (mis)guided by name and fame, when suitability is of greater import. Marvel’s Doctor Strange, with part Disney talent and full distribution channels in tow, is ridden with both pitfalls. It’s a marvel then that the film manages to serve above par, enjoyable fare, for which credit largely goes to t...

Siraj Syed on 18th MFF: Godless, Madly, Red Turtle meets Barakah Far from catching up on film viewing shortfall, I could see fewer films in the second half of the 18th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival (MFF) with STAR. It was a deadly combination of several factors: Tickets sold out, no luck with walk-ins, inability to wake up early, traffic jams and unavoidably long travel times, the desire to attend two or three non-screening events, the choice of some films over others shown at the same or alm...

MAMI’s 18th MFF schedule had gaping holes

MAMI’s 18th MFF schedule had gaping holes Multiple venues spread far and wide, across the Western and Eastern, Southern and Northern tips of the linear city of Mumbai meant that persons living in those areas where the cinemas are located would have easier access to them and would save a lot of time commuting. Siraj Syed reviews Shivaay: She: Vaay? He: Vaay not?

Siraj Syed reviews Shivaay: She: Vaay? He: Vaay not? Shivaay is a balanced film, in a convoluted kind of way. There is a germ of a story and there is major plagiarism of tracks from both Hollywood and Indian films. There is breath-taking action and there are pointless stunts. There is high proficiency acting and there is insult to talent. There is a small component of genuine humour and a large dose of unintentionally silly moments. There is organic unity in the screenplay when you match the ...

I, Daniel Blake, Salesman & 10 other Cannes award-winners at IFFI Goa 2016

A dozen Cannesy films are found in the selection for the 46th International Film Festival of Goa, 2016. Six months after Cannes and one month after the Mumbai Film Festival, those Indians who missed them there have another chance to make good their losses. I have seen only one of the pretty dozen, and though it was a treat for the eyes and ears, it was still anything but a pretty picture.

1. I, Daniel Blake (UK) (Crowd magnet at the Mumbai Film Festival last month)

Winner of the Palm d’Or (Golden Palm) and the Palm DogManitarian award

Directed by Ken Loach, the film won the Palm d’Or, the top prize awarded at Cannes. It was the second Palm d’Or for Loach who won it for The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006). I, Daniel Blake revolves around the life of a middle aged carpenter and a single mother, who find themselves stuck in similar situations. This film will be screened in the Masterstrokes category at IFFI.

2. It’s Only the End of the World (Canada)

Winner of the Grand Prix and the Ecumenical Jury Prize

Director Xavier Dolan was just 25 when he stunned the world with Mommy (2014, Jury Prize at Cannes). His latest film is about Louis, a terminally ill writer who returns home after a long absence, only to bring some unpleasant news to his family. This film too will be screened in the Masterstrokes category at IFFI.

3.  Graduation (Romania) (another MFF blockbuster)

Winner of Best Director award

After he made it big on the world stage with 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (which was the opening film at IFFI in 2007; recall chatting with the director then), Romanian film maker Cristian Mungiu has established himself as a director to be watched. Graduation revolves around the life of a doctor and the challenges he has to face as a parent. This film, again, will be a part of the Masterstrokes category at IFFI.

4. The Salesman (Iran) (MFF superhit carry-over)

Winner of the Best Actor and Best Screenplay award

Asghar Farhadi--the name itself is good enough to send world cinema lovers in a tizzy. Academy Award winner for A Separation (2011), Farhadi’s latest, The Salesman, is an Iranian-French film that he has directed and scripted. The story is a about a couple who play the lead roles in the local version of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman. The male lead was played by Shahab Hosseini, for which he won the Best Actor, and Farhadi took the honours for Best Screenplay. The film is Iran’s entry at the 2017 Oscars.

5. Ma’ Rosa (Philippines)

Winner of the Best Actress award

This film from the nation of countless islands is directed by Brilliante Mendoza, who has made award-winning films like Summer Heat (2006) and Thy Womb (2012). Shot with portable, inexpensive digital equipment, on location in the Philippines’ capital Manila’s poorest neighbourhoods, the film revolves around the life of Rosa, portrayed by Jacklyn Jose. Ma’ Rosa is another Masterstroke. It is the official submission of the Philippines for the ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ category of the 89th Academy Awards, in 2017.

This year Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event presents a new initiative - Storytek Forum, a conference bringing together creatives, tech platforms and investors from across the world to explore, explain and help navigate the future of the booming content business.

Storytek Forum is a one-day inspirational brainstorming and discussion forum at Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event with top business experts explaining the secrets of digital marketing, financing, production and sales in the global content business - film, games, merchandising, mobile, publishing, design, VR and AR.

The conference explains through case studies and inspirational fireside chats how to develop a creative idea or business to an international success story and what steps producers should take for a breakthrough in the intellectual property business, hailed as the next big thing globally.

How do you get your product out in an increasingly globalized, digitalized, polarized and customized world? How do you fund your idea, startup or production? Which are the new business models and success cases? These are some topics to be explored by a wide range of speakers, including PR & Marketing executive of Sony Pictures Entertainment Pam Rodi; Call of Duty talent director & VR visionary Keith Arem; crowdfunding and crowdfinancing pioneer of the Iron Sky franchise Tero Kaukomaa; digital brand & startup strategist, TED resident & open data expert Laura-Anne Edwards; media and film compliance executive Rob Aft; digital content integrator of iTunes & Google Play and Co-Chair of America's Electronic Merchants Association Mitch Mallon; the partner of Singapore's most recent global media fund, Gin Kai Chan; and Jennifer Jao, the director of Taipei Film Commission, with many recent success stories to present, from Luc Besson’s "Lucy" to Martin Scorsese's anticipated “Silence”.

Sten-Kristian Saluveer, founder of Storytek and Head of Development & Special Projects at Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event, said:
“Creativity and business fuelled by digital media are increasingly embracing multiple formats and platforms and in order to create any interest at all with users and audiences you need to be everywhere, all the time. How to do this successfully, raise interest with investors and secure the money are precisely the questions that Storytek sets out to answer.”

Marge Liiske, Head of Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event, said:
"We are thrilled to be presenting this first edition of Storytek Forum. It combines so many things we've wanted to achieve when creating our Industry programme: top-level networking and knowledge, tapping into the startup and tech environment of Estonia, and all happening in a friendly and accessible setting. We want Industry@Tallinn to be a place where people can come to solve problems, and we hope this day will put some new and creative ideas on the table."

The Forum is also a kick off for Storytek IP & startups accelerator - a financing and business development bootcamp for global storytellers to be started in 2017 by Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival.

Storytek is part of the Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event Lab section which is about linking technology, film, games and investors, developing content for future platforms, and training tomorrow's talents.

The Storytek Forum is organised by Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event in partnership with regional investment venture Head Capital and with the support of European Regional Development Fund and Estonian Ministry of Culture.

The 20th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival kicked off Nov 11th with a record number of guests and press attending - around 1000 - and a programme of 200 films. The festival will see visits from all competition directors as well as names like Russian producerAlexandr Rodnyansky (Leviathan, Elena, Cloud Atlas), and Oscar nominated producer Uberto Pasolini (The Full Monty), heading the Main Competition jury.

The festival’s Opening Ceremony took place in the Nordea Concert Hall with a Black Carpet and a special show designed to celebrate the festival’s country of focus this year – France. The opening film is Eternity, a visually lavish tale of life’s cycles studied through three generations of a French upper class family. Director Tran Anh Hung has been awarded both the Golden Camera in Cannes for The Scent of Green Papaya (1993) and the Golden Lion in Venice for Cyclo (1995).

Guests and special screenings

Out of the 200 films in the programme more than 80 will have guests with them to present the films – a record in itself for Black Nights. Among them are the prominent Russian producer Alexander Rodnyansky who has produced Hollywood projects such as Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and Cloud Atlas in addition to the Academy Award-nominated Leviathan and Elena (dir Andrey Zvyagintsev), who is present at the screening of his latest project, the stylized thriller The Duelist by director Aleksey Mizgirev. Among other Russians visiting the festival are the Cannes Best Director winner Pavel Lungin whose film Queen of Spades will compete for the festival’s Grand Prix in the Main Competition and director Kira Kovalenko whose Sofichkacompetes in the First Features competition programme.

Among the 10 Special Screenings – films that the programming team have selected for highlighting for various different reasons – is the European premiere of the teen comedy Edge of Seventeen with the rising star Hayden Szeto attending the screening. The distributor Sony Pictures Entertainment will also have a representative at the the festival’s industry event Industry@Tallinn with PR & Marketing executive Pam Rodi speaking at the Storytek Forum conference.

Director Seifollah Samadian will be presenting his 76 Minutes and 15 Seconds with Abbas Kiarostami, a portrait of the recently departured legend of Iranian cinema. The screening will also include the short film Take me home, directed by Kiarostami himself. It is part of the last film he made, a collection of short films. The full film will be screened at Cannes Film Festival in 2017.

The festival will also see the world premiere of the Estonian documentary Shusha by directors Lauri Lippmaa and Aivar Valdre, a portrait of the first president of Belorussia, Stanislav Suskevich, who will attend the screening and hold a press conference.

The Seville European Film Festival wrapped

A total of 127 directors from all of Europe opt for Seville for their national premieres and 29 for their international premieres, the festival has welcomed over 400 filmmakers and actors

In 2016 the festival had over 120,000 euros in box office take, 27.5% more than in 2015, with over 70,000 spectators in the cinemas

The Seville European Film Festival has, at the close of the present edition, a positive balance of results. When the average spectator’s interest is centred on seeing cinema, or other entertainment proposals, on digital platforms, or going to see premieres of commercial, highly promoted films in the best of cases, managing to fill cinemas for nine days offering European auteurist cinema is more than a success. It’s true that SEFF’s proposal is not only to see films, it also implies sharing the cinema with other filmmakers, talking about a film with its director, exchanging opinions, learning to look and understand how those around us look, coming out of a screening and going into another one in the next cinema, and sitting next to the protagonists of the previous screening anxious to see the work of another filmmaker, happy to be in Seville and to be experiencing SEFF. Going to the cinema is seeing a film; going to the festival is much more.

SEFF REAFFIRMS ITSELF

When it comes to supplying audience and box office figures, the festival has the necessary infrastructure to issue certificates of compliance via the Instituto de la Cinematografía y las Artes Audiovisuales (ICAA), regarding the total or partial inclusion of spectators at festivals and in the overall calculation of spectators at a film.

For the first time the festival has surpassed 70,000 cinema spectators, and confirms an increase of 15% in attendance at screenings with regard to the 2015 edition. Another number that the festival has surpassed is that of 100,000 euros with a take of 120,659 euros, which means an increase of 27.5% on the last edition (94,581 €). Online sales were 56%, as opposed to 16% in 2015 due to the implementation and incorporation of a unique sales system via the internet sales platform of the Instituto de la Cultura y las Artes of Seville City Council which has meant an improvement in the festival’s online sales system, making it more accessible and improving its usability. As for season ticket sales, there has also been an increase, going from 1,617 to 1,816. The senior season ticket, a novelty in this edition’s season ticket system, has been very well received, with a total of 463 sales.

The Official section managed to improve its 2015 numbers, obtaining 16,101 spectators. The New Waves became the third section with most audience (after Europa Junior and the Official Section) and had 40% more audience with regard to the 2015 edition, with 10,163 spectators.

Audience attendance at the Resistances section, dedicated to our country’s new independent cinema and in which Andalusian directors also participate, grew by 18%. Teatro Alameda Calle Crédito, 13 41002 – Sevilla T. +(34) 955 473 190info@festivalcinesevilla.euwww.festivalcinesevilla.eu Es un proyecto de: 2 de 7

EFA established itself as one of SEFF’s most popular sections with 7,703 spectators; and Andalusian Panorama, despite being composed of mainly non-fiction titles, maintained attendance figures similar to 2015, 3,739 spectators, the year when it registered a 38% increase, confirming the solidity of the SEFF audience’s commitment to cinema made in Andalusia and by Andalusian filmmakers.

Europa Junior, now a quality competitive section and with its own entity since 2012, established itself in 2016 as the festival section with greatest attendance. Organised in coordination with the Department of Educational Programs (Area of Education, Citizen Participation and Municipal Buildings) of Seville City Council, as had been announced, it achieved a record figure of 24,528 spectators, as opposed to the 21,182 of last year, which means an increase of over 16% with regard to 2015, and it has managed to triple attendance since 2012.

This increase in Europa Junior’s audience is due to the important increase in participation by schools in the programmer, which has gone from 159 in 2015 to 181 (88 in the capital and 93 in the province), and which included 4,754 school children and young people in the different meetings with the directors of the films presented.

THE MOST SEEEN, THE MOST SHARED

In 2016, various films were shown to full cinemas in their SEFF screenings. In addition to the Opening and Closing Galas, held in the Lope de Vega Theater with the screening, respectively, of Une Vie and the winner of the Gold Giraldillo, Ma Loute, in the Official Section all the seats were sold for titles such Amor y amistad, La muerte de Luis XIV, Personal Shopper, United States of Love, Mimosas, Solo el fin del mundo, American Honey or the above mentioned Ma Loute. Several titles in other sections were also sold out, such as Aunque tú no lo sepas. La poesía de Luis García Montero (Winner of the IMAGENERA 2016 Award), Gurumbé. Canciones de tu memoria negra, La voz en lucha, and NO, un cuento flamenco, all of them included in the Andalusian panorama section (which testifies to the SEFF audience’s commitment to cinema made in Andalusia and by Andalusian directors), and also Toni Erdmann (EFA Selection) and In Bed with Victoria (The New Waves).

Also, 90% occupation was achieved (and in some cases surpassed) by special screenings such as Secuestro (within the Canal Sur Radio y Televisión Gala); the double session of the now classic Grotesque Popcorn Marathon programmed by Paco Campano (with the films Attack of the Lederhosen zombies and Mil gritos tiene la noche); and titles such as Un castillo en Italia (within the tribute to the actress and director Valeria Bruni Tedeschi), The Student (The New Waves), Europe, She Loves (EFA Selection), Une Vie (Official Section) and Dogs (The New Waves).

CINEMA FOR EVERYONE: PLAN YOUR SEFF

The Seville European Film Festival has proposed a programme thinking of all audiences and all ages, in which each spectator will design his/her own festival, a SEFF for everyone. Teatro Alameda Calle Crédito, 13 41002 – Sevilla T. +(34) 955 473 190info@festivalcinesevilla.euwww.festivalcinesevilla.eu Es un proyecto de: 3 de 7

Once the programming was defined, the festival worked to promote it among social collectives interested in one or more contents through mediators, talks and meetings. They contacted a total of 219 associations, and also universities and senior citizen centers, along with Seville City Council’s adult education centres, which have participated in the festival.

When transmitting the information to each collective and at the information points where access to SEFF was supplied to the general public, various film itineraries were drawn up by the festival, linking films and activities by themes.

For this, the sale of tickets and season tickets was redesigned, maintaining the General Season Ticket and the Young Season Ticket and creating the Senior Season Ticket for those over 60, and facilitating the sale of group admissions.

GREAT FILMMAKERS IN SEVILLE DURING SEFF

The Seville European Film Festival offered the public the opportunity to meet, converse and share experiences with the almost 400 filmmakers and actors invited this year. Attendances at the festival’s activities and screenings have had 154 occasions to coincide with them at the presentation of their films in the cinemas -10 more than in 2015-, and converse in more than 100 Q&A sessions after the screenings.

Many of the great established names in European cinema visited SEFF in 2016, the most notable included Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Vincent Lindon, Olivier Assayas, Whit Stillman, Philippe Grandieux, Ulrich Seidl, Bertrand Bonello, Nadav Lapid, Eugène Green, Axelle Ropert, Tizza Covi, Szabolcs Hajdu, Jonathan Littell, Claudio Giovannesi, Federica Di Giacomo, Kurdwin Ayub, Vivienne Dick, Anka Sasnal, Wilhelm Sasnal, Judith Chemla, Joao Nicolau, Rita Azevedo, Marie Losier, Ben Rivers or Caroline Deruas.

New Spanish cinema’s great family also held interesting discussions with the audience, with participation by such members as Albert Serra, Oliver Laxe, Hernán Zin, Pablo Llorca, Ado Arrietta, Enrique Baró Ubach, Ramón Lluis Bande, José Luis Tirado, María Cañas, Isaki Lacuesta, Isa Campo or Luis Bermejo.

And some of the best known faces in Spanish cinema also passed through Seville, including Natalia de Molina, Ingrid García Jonsson, Manuela Vellés, Mary Paz Sayago, Nya de la Rubia, Cuca Escribano, Félix Sabroso, Antonio Dechent, Manolo Solo, Antonio Pérez, Antonio Saura, Ruth Gabriel, Ángeles González Sinde, Laia Marull, Carmen Pardo, Mercedes Hoyos or Pilar López de Ayala who was a member of the Official Jury.

PROGRAMMING: SUPPORT FOR EUROPEAN, SPANISH AND ANDALUSIAN AUTEURIST CINEMA

In 2016 the Seville European Film Festival screened 212 titles: 113 feature films, 8 medium length films and 91 short films. In the main competitive sections there were up to 42 first or second films, which shows the festival’s commitments to the new talents in European and Spanish cinema. Teatro Alameda Calle Crédito, 13 41002 – Sevilla T. +(34) 955 473 190info@festivalcinesevilla.euwww.festivalcinesevilla.eu Es un proyecto de: 4 de 7

Outstanding filmmakers in European cinema decided to premiere their works within the framework of SEFF. This year there were 27 world premieres (a record figure in the last 5 years), 2 international premieres and 127 Spanish premieres. In addition, the festival showed films from 44 countries (25 of them belonging to the Creative Europe programme, of which 20 belong to peripheral film industries considered as being of “low audiovisual capacity”).

In addition, this year the Resistances section has the backing of filmmakers in programming 9 world premieres and one international premiere even though the festival rules require only one Spanish premiere, which shows the filmmakers’ preference for presenting their films at SEFF rather than at other festivals.

In 2016 SEFF offered a total of 460 screenings (a record figure in the festival’s history –compared to the 450 in 2015 and the 410 in 2014-) on a total of 22 screens (in 4 venues: Lope de Vega Theatre, Alameda Theatre, Nervión Cinemas and CineZona, which presents the Europa Junior screenings and this year had to use three more cinemas than in 2015 in order to cover the increase in demand). In addition to these venues, there were screenings programmed at the Pablo de Olavide University and also one in the Seville Penitentiary Centre 1, with the collaboration of the NGO Solidarios.

In this regard, it should be mentioned that the quality of the screenings is one of the festival’s strong points, thanks to the optimum level of equipment available in the festival’s various venues. The excellence of the films’ image and sound were explicitly recognised by participating filmmakers such as Ulrich Seidl, Ado Arrietta, Whit Stillman, Oliver Laxe, Tizza Covi, Olivier Assayas or Eugène Green, among others.

INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS MEET AT SEFF

In 2016 attendance by film industry professionals from around the world at the Seville European Film Festival doubled, going from 219 guests in 2015 to 475 in 2016, which means an increase of 117%.

Accredited professionals at IndustriaSEFF saw that the offer aimed at their profiles had grown exponentially, and they could participate in the Europa Cinemas biennial workshop with the participation of over 40 exhibitors from all of Europe; in the conference for AEDAVA exhibitors with the participation of 29 exhibitors from all of Spain; in the speeches for the sale of audiovisual projects; in the conferences organized by Extenda, in the ‘XIV Conference on Animation Cinema and Videogames’ organized by the Fundación AVA, in the session of ‘Women in Focus’ organized by AAMMA or in the screenings of the official programme.

The notable activity in IndustriaSEFF 2016 was the first edition of ‘Spanish Screenings Sevilla TV’. Over 300 professionals and 70 buyers from more than 20 countries from around the world participated in this audiovisual market organized by FAPAE, in collaboration with the Agencia Andaluza de Instituciones Culturales (Department of Culture of the Andalusian Regional Government), and with the support of the Agencia Andaluza de Promoción Exterior, EXTENDA (Economic and Promotional Department of the Andalusian regional Government), of the Teatro Alameda Calle Crédito, 13 41002 – Sevilla T. +(34) 955 473 190info@festivalcinesevilla.euwww.festivalcinesevilla.eu Es un proyecto de: 5 de 7

Creative Europe MEDIA Andalucía Office, of PATE (Federación de productores españoles de televisión), EGEDA, Canal Sur Radio y Televisión, Aepaa-Apria and the Clúster Audiovisual, tecnológico, Industria creativa de Andalucía.

As a result of the activities in IndustriaSEFF there were sales of Spanish television programmes to France, Italy, Eastern Europe, Latin American and Asia. There were over 500 sales meetings between producers and holders of Spanish rights and international buyers.

Year by year the festival is becoming a source of interest for programmers at a national and international level. At a national level, because it is attended by programmers from other Spanish festivals and from Spain’s independent exhibition circuit in search of the year’s treasures in European and national cinema. At an international level, because the quality of the world and international premieres at SEFF attracts the attention of programmers from other festivals around the world

This year Seville was visited by the programmers for festivals such as Locarno, Rotterdam, Toulouse, Belfort, DocLisboa, Lodz, Pula (Croatia), Essay Film Festival (London), Nederlands FF, London Short FF, Festibérico (Holland), Distrital (Mexico), Cineglobal (Dominican Republic), Lima Independiente, San Sebastian, Sitges, Festival de Cine de Autor de Barcelona -D'A, FilMadrid, Tabakalera-San Sebastian, Festival de Las Palmas, Albacete, Córdoba, Málaga, S8-A Coruña, ZineBi, Punto de Vista, Curtocircuito, Aguilar de Campóo, Novos Cinemas, Play-Doc, Alcances, Centro Pompidou, CGAI, IVAC or Filmoteca de Andalucía, among others.

The festival supports (and is supported by) the main Spanish film distributors. Up to 15 Spanish distributors have participated in SEFF 2016: Universal España, Surtsey, Avalon, La Aventura Audiovisual, Paco Poch, Noucinemart, Golem, Capricci Cine, PackMàgic, Compacto, Barton, Paycom, Film Buró, Abordar and A Contracorriente. Nevertheless The New Waves + Non Fiction + Resistances premiered 38 feature films without commercial distribution in Spain, showing that the festival also supports independent film without distribution or self-distributed.

PARALLEL ACTIVITIES: SEMINARS, MASTER CLASSES, SEFF DAY/SEFF NIGHT

A total of 1,289 people have participated in the 25 parallel activities which SEFF organised in 2016, to which must be added the 4,500 people who attended the 9 concerts included in the programming of SEFF Noche which increases its audience edition by edition, and the 3,960 visits received by the Exhibition ‘War on the screen. Spain 1936-2016’ which was installed in the Antiquarium, with the collaboration of the Centro de Estudios Andaluces and the Filmoteca de Andalucía.

Special mention must be made of the second edition of the Seminar ‘The resistant image: Stories and aesthetics from the “other” Spanish cinema”, hosted by CICUS for which the enrollment quota was sold out and seating had to be increased due to demand.

Literature has been one of the theme blocks at this edition of the Seville European Film Festival. SEFF made reading recommendations with the activity Read before seeing, an initiative which began this year, with participation from bookshops such as Casa Tomada, Un Gato en Teatro Alameda Calle Crédito, 13 41002 – Sevilla T. +(34) 955 473 190info@festivalcinesevilla.euwww.festivalcinesevilla.eu Es un proyecto de: 6 de 7

Bicicleta, La Fuga Librerías, Yerma Librería, La Jerónima, La Isla de Siltolá and La Extravagante Libros: they gave free tickets to the festival against the purchase of any of the books that inspired the films programmed by the festival.

CONVERSATION ABOUT EUROPEAN CINEMA, ALSO ON THE NETWORKS

The greatest change and evolution with regard to previous years has been the conversation generated about the festival on its online channels, that is, not only has the total reach increased, the hits and impressions or the number of fans and followers, but also interactions and dialogue. In this thirteenth edition we have continued working on the organic diffusion of the festival’s contents but what is important is that we have achieved “that engagement” with the public.

So, on Facebook, the relevant information is not only that it has surpassed 20,000 fans but, above all, that the reach of publications on Facebook since 20th September and up to the end of SEFF on 12th November, is close to half a million hits (483,157) and 154,290 interactions. Mention should also be made of the SEFFZILLA spot, which was reproduced 49,349 times if we add the different ways in which it was diffused or the summary videos which were made each day during the festival, with almost 16,500 views on SEFF’s various diffusion channels, doubling those in last year’s edition. On Twitter, there were 120,000 daily impressions with a total of 728,000 hits in the month of November. On Instagram, positive reactions multiplied by 10 with regard to the previous edition. Another of the achievements was the retransmission from Periscope of the announcement of the Prize Winners which reached 5,300 spectators and 37,125 impressions.

Also, for the first time, after its thirteenth edition, the Seville European Film Festival, using the SurveyMonkey tool, will carry out a satisfaction survey to get the impressions of the audience and festival guests.

SEFF: A PROJECT ON THE NET

The Seville European Film Festival is a project by Seville City Council’s Instituto de la Cultura y las Artes, and has the support of the Instituto de la Cinematografía y las Artes Visuales of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport, and of the EU Creative Europe Programme. Its sponsors are Fundación Cajasol and Deluxe; Renault is its official vehicle and Hesperia Sevilla its official hotel, with the participation of Radio 3. SEFF receives the collaboration of Cinesur Nervión Plaza, Cine Zona, European Film Academy, Europa Cinemas, Acción Cultural Española, French Institute, Unifrance, Polish Institute of Culture, Austrian Cultural Forum, Austrian Film Commision, Eurimages, Fundación Tres Culturas, Tussam, Centro de Estudios Andaluces, Extenda, Agencia Andaluza de Instituciones Culturales, Canal Sur Radio y Televisión, Metro de Sevilla, Fundación SGAE, Centro de iniciativas culturales de Universidad de Sevilla CICUS, Pablo de Olavide University, Centro Cultural Italiano, Sociedad Francesa en Sevilla, Kónica Minolta, DëLonghi, Lanjarón,Apit Sevilla, Ines Rosales, La Abuela Produce, Puerto de Indias, Prodetur Diputación de Sevilla, Dispublis, Santa Teresa 1881 Aceite de Oliva, Artent, Starit, Eventival, Abades Triana. Hardly any city has such close links with German-French history and collaboration between the two countries like Saarbrücken. The Saarland's capital on the border with France was therefore the ideal venue for the 14th edition of the German-French Film Meeting which came to a close today.

Around 200 participants from both countries came together on 22 and 23 November 2016 to exchange information – supported by seven expert panels and two keynotes – and present their projects at a co-production market. The Prime Minister of Saarland, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, spoke to the guests at a gala dinner held at the World Cultural Heritage Site of the Völklingen Ironworks. The German-French Film Meeting is organized by German Films and UniFrance in close consultation with the German-French Film Academy.

Marie Masmonteil was very pleased to open her first German-French Film Meeting as the President of the German-French Film Academy. She reminded the participants of the “very special responsibility” of the German and French film communities in the face of an ever-changing world as  “historically political and economic partners in the EU.” She hopes that projects will be developed which “prove that the cultural diversity in Europe will remain vital for a long time to come.”

The Prime Minister of Saarland, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, emphasized the binding power of the film medium and the German-French friendship, which is especially also lived and experienced as a cultural friendship. The state of Saarland, the “most French of of the German federal states”, has experienced “the negative impact for the populations, when there is a lack of cooperation between both countries, but also the positive impacts when both countries cooperate with one another.”

Prominent speakers such as Frédérique Bredin (CNC), Peter Dinges (FFA German Federal Film Board), Isabelle Giordano (UniFrance), Pierre-Emmanuel Lecerf (CNC), Julia Piaseczny (SPIO and FFA's EU Affairs Officer), Emmanuel Joly (European Commission, DG CONNECT) and Torsten Frehse (German distributor Neue Visionen Filmverleih) presented various expert panels on current German-French film issues.

They shed light on the successes and difficulties of German-French co-productions, developments in European copyright and the Digital Single Market, the operating methods for the film funding organizations DFFF and Film France, and on the success of A SENSE OF WONDER (LE GOUT DES MERVEILLES) in Germany. Alfred Hürmer (Pick up Film) and Jean-Marie Dura (Ymagis) gave keynotes on the future of theatrical distribution, cinema and film exploitation. The Atelier Network, a network of alumni of the year-long Atelier Ludwigsburg-Paris training program, organized a panel on private equity financing for European independent productions.

24 German and French producers are pitching their projects at the Meeting this afternoon, and there is an opportunity for individual talks with potential co-production, financing and distribution partners.

For the eighteenth year, the Nihilist Cultural Foundation presents the Nihilist International Film Festival.  This year’s evening of films will be presented at the Echo Park Film Center.  The show will start at 8:30 pm on Friday, December 16. The festival includes two hours of short films from around the country and around the world.  The films range from troubling to hilarious, from profound to completely silly.  Pretty much, something for everyone (except children and clergy).

Festival Director Elisha Shapiro commented, “Since 1999, we have been doing this film festival.  And if there’s one thing nihilists like, it’s tradition…a tradition of twisted, offensive art that makes you laugh.”

As a special feature, all those who bring their own televisions and arrive fifteen minutes early will be able to include their appliances in the traditional ritual Blessing of the Televisions.

Nihilist Film Festival director Elisha Shapiro is a Los Angeles-based conceptual artist.  He is known for presenting the 1984 Nihilist Olympics and the 1999 Nihilism Expo.  He was also the Nihilist Party candidate for Governor in 2006, for President in 1988, and for LA county sheriff in 1992. Most recently, Shapiro appeared as The Funniest Nihilist in the LA Fringe Festival.

The Echo Park Film Center is located at 1200 N. Alvarado Street in Silverlake. Nihilist Christmas Special ticket prices are only 99 cents. More information is available at the Nihilists Corner website:  www.nihilists.net and www.echoparkfilmcenter.org/cinema/schedule.html.
