Started in 2001 to encourage and reward teachers who utilize video as a project-based learning tool in their classrooms, iVIE has grown into a major student video competition attracting hundreds of students each year from around the county. Through iVIE, hundreds of students each year use film and visual literacy to demonstrate their understanding of classroom concepts. This year’s 17th Annual iVIE Awards & Film Celebration will take place in May 2017. Entries will be accepted up until March 2017.
“MACSD is honored that SDCOE has entrusted our organization with this one-of-a-kind event celebrating the best in San Diego County student filmmaking,” states Ethan van Thillo, Founder/Executive Director. Mr. van Thillo continues, “The iVIE Awards aligns perfectly with MACSD’s long history of promoting, celebrating and training young filmmakers; and we’re excited to see this important event continue to grow for many years into the future.”
“This is an exciting transition for iVIE,” said SDCOE Assistant Superintendent of Integrated Technology Services Karen Connaghan. “Media Arts Center’s stewardship of the program will allow iVIE to grow while still offering a pathway for K-12 teachers and students to use video to demonstrate and showcase their skills and abilities.”

Some of the highlights of the 2016 festival include Sand Storm, Israel’s official entry to the 89th Academy Awards, a film that examines gender inequalities in a Bedouin village, through the eyes of a young woman who struggles to make her own way in a traditional family; First shown at the Tribeca Film Festival this year, Keep Quiet follows Csanad Szegedi, who rose through the ranks of Hungary’s far-right extremist party before learning his grandmother was a Jewish Auschwitz survivor; and The Tenth Man, an Argentinian film that follows the return of a young man to the Jewish neighborhood in Buenos Aires where he grew up.

The 28th annual Boston Jewish Film Festival will open on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 with the Boston Premiere of A.K.A. Nadia at the Coolidge Corner Theatre. The narrative film from Israel explores the life of Maya Goldwasser, a mom, successful choreographer and wife of an Israeli official at the Ministry of Justice. Born to a Palestinian family as Nadia, Maya abandoned her roots after becoming involved with a PLO activist in her youth and took on a new identity as an Israeli Jew. But leaving the past behind isn’t always possible. A.K.A. Nadia won The Israel Critics’ Forum Award for the Best Feature Film at the 2015 Jerusalem Film Festival.
Can we laugh about tragedy? That’s the question raised by The Last Laugh, the Mid-Fest event at the Festival on Wednesday, November 16, at 6:30 p.m. at the Coolidge Corner Theatre. Through interviews with individuals such as Mel Brooks, Sarah Silverman, Etgar Keret, Abraham Foxman and many others, along with clips from comedians, TV shows and movies, The Last Laugh offers insights into the Holocaust, our own psyches and our senses of humor. This screening will be followed by a conversation with the director, Ferne Pearlstein, producer Robert Edwards, author of The Big Book of Jewish Humor, Rabbi Moshe Waldoks, and moderated by journalist James Carroll.
The Spotlight Screening, held at the Coolidge Corner Theater on Nov. 15 at 6:45 p.m. will be One Week and A Day, a dark comedy that deals with the aftermath of loss. When Eyal and his wife finish the week of shiva for their son, she urges him to return to his usual routine. Instead, he enlists his young neighbor to join him in smoking his son’s medical marijuana. The film won awards at the 2016 Jerusalem Film Festival and at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.
Finally, the festival will close on Sunday, November 20 with a 7 pm screening of the film Who’s Going to Love Me Now? at the Museum of Fine Arts. This Massachusetts premiere tells the story of Saar, raised on an Orthodox kibbutz in Israel, who moves to London after coming out to his family as a gay man. When he learns he is HIV positive, he struggles to reestablish relationships – both with his family and his homeland.
“The line-up for the 28th annual Boston Jewish Film Festival is one of the best we’ve had in years,” said Ariana Cohen-Halberstam, the Artistic Director at the BJFF. “The films selected represent all genres, from documentaries to comedies. What they have in common is the unique perspectives offered by a group of accomplished filmmakers into how daily life is shaped by Jewish identity. We are really looking forward to sharing these films with a wide audience across Greater Boston.”

Films from Jim Jarmusch, Alejandro Jodorowsky and Pablo Larraín // International guests & 47 premieres // Press conference & accreditation
Some 200 short and feature-length films from 32 countries have been selected for the 29th edition of exground filmfest, to take place in Wiesbaden, Germany, from 11th to 20th November 2016. With a plethora of first time screenings, including eight world, five international, one European and 33 German premieres, exground filmfest once again promises to bring a large variety of films operating beyond the confines of mainstream cinema to the big screen this year. A total of six competitions also offer competitors a chance at cash and material prizes valued at approximately 20,000 euros.
In addition to the film program, festival venues Caligari FilmBühne, Murnau Filmtheater and Kulturpalast will also play host to a diverse supporting program featuring numerous special events from November 11th to the 20th (a full schedule can be found here).
Jarmusch, Jodorowsky, Berben – Indie Star Power on the Festival Screen
Getting a jump on the films’ official theatrical release dates, exground filmfest will be screening the two most recent additions to indie icon Jim Jarmusch’s filmography in the scope of the American Independents series. With PATERSON, a moving outsider portrait of a bus driver and closet poet, the American director has managed to create a literal poem of a movie (see below for details regarding a press screening of the film on Oct. 31st), while his Iggy Pop documentary GIMME DANGER turns up the volume considerably for an engaging look at the proto-punk legend and his compatriots from The Stooges.
The International section also features the most recent works of two further extraordinary directors, this time from Chile. In NERUDA, Pablo Larraín (¡NO!, EL CLUB) tells the story of the beloved Nobel Prize winning poet of the same name. In ENDLESS POETRY, cult director Alejandro Jodorowsky (LA DANZA DE LA REALIDAD) reminisces on the avant-garde scene of the 1940s and 50s in a journey that is by equal turns poetic and mad.
Iris Berben also takes us along on a wild trip into the past in SHOW WHAT YOU LOVE. This documentary from Torsten Stegmann, Frank Göhre and Borwin Richter dives deep into the history of the filmmakers of the “Munich Group” revolving around Klaus Lemke, Rudolf Thome and Dominik Graf. SHOW WHAT YOU LOVE will be vying together with the other five productions in the Made in Germany series for the honour of best film in the brand new competition DAS BRETT. A jury composed of inmates from Wiesbaden’s correctional facility will present the award, endowed with a minimum of 1,000 euros in prize money through the generous support of “Die WERFT – Kulturbühne in der JVA Wiesbaden” (a cultural platform for Wiesbaden’s detention centre).
Bringing People Together - exground filmfest’s International Guests
The exground filmfest team is looking forward to hosting numerous guests in Wiesbaden. In the International series, actress Edwarda Gurrola will present the Mexican relationship drama THE PLEASURE IS MINE. Gurrola plays the university graduate Rita, who lives in isolation off the grid with Mateo, an auto mechanic. Director Elisa Miller’s film is a sensitive portrait of the beginning and end of a great love affair.
Joining the festival from Argentina is Álvaro Urtizberea, one of the two directors of the comedy HORTENSIA. After dealing with the difficult hand fate has dealt her, the film’s eponymous heroine dreams up a guide to achieving happiness based on her adolescence, which includes the chapters “Find a Young Blonde Guy” and “Design the Most Beautiful Shoes in the World”.
The International section is also set to welcome two guests representing the Macedonian thriller AMOK. Director Vardan Tozija will be in Wiesbaden along with his leading actor Martin Giorgosk, who plays an unscrupulous gang leader in the film. AMOK paints a dark portrait of a country caught between corruption and criminality.
The guests from the Hessian documentary film EUROPA – EIN KONTINENT ALS BEUTE, which treats the root causes of the European financial crisis, are sure to provide for an interesting panel discussion. In addition to directors Christoph Schuch and Reiner Krausz, several of the film’s protagonists will also take part in the discussion after the screening, including European Parliament member Fabio De Masi and economic expert and “Mr. Dax” himself Dirk Müller.
The 13th edition of the exground youth days promises to treat its young viewers to exciting stories from a wide variety of countries and cultures as well as numerous special guests, including Iranian director Mehrdad Oskouei, who will be presenting his highly acclaimed documentary STARLESS DREAMS. In his film, Oskouei manages to provide rare glimpses into the otherwise closed world of a “correctional and rehabilitation centre” for young women in Iran.
Director Renārs Vimba, who won the Crystal Bear for Best Youth Film at this year’s Berlinale with his fiction feature MELLOW MUD, will be joining the festival all the way from Latvia. In Vimba’s film, 17-year-old Raya has to reconcile the topsy-turvy ups and downs of first love with her responsibility for her little brother.
In a record 6th edition of US in Progress Wrocław industry program (October 26-28th) taking place in the frame of the 7th American Film Festival 8 projects were presented, while 7 were eligible for the post-production in-kind awards (post-production services sponsored by the partners of the program).

The 57th Thessaloniki International Film Festival opened last night with an original and fresh start for the new director of the festival, Greek Film critic, editor and former Athens Film Festival Director Orestis Andreadakis, who took her from Dimitri Eipides at the beginning of the year.
At the historic Olympion Theatre, the ceremony hosted Greek actors Themis Batzaka and Stelios Mainas, who managed with spot on jokes and great vibe to welcome the audience and speak about the festival’s history and activity, pointing out the great line up of the 57th festival, showing over 200 films in the Greek city until November 13th.
“When festival started, with Venice making the first step over 70 years ago, it was all very different in the festival world. Today festivals work as a platform to make new connections and proactively stimulate the future film production..” said mr. Andreadakis in his very first opening speech.
Although Jim Jarmusch was not present to greet the audience and present his film Paterson that opened the festival, he sent a pre-recorded message, expressing his warmest wishes for wonderful festival to the city with great audiences and ‘the best food in the world’.
The ceremony was followed by the opening party with many events to follow in the next days including the opening of the Film Market tomorrow Saturday and special free events, masterclasses and networking parties throughout the festival.

The Kew Gardens Festival of Cinema is a non-profit organization established to support the development of Independent Filmmakers and help expand the audiences of independent cinema from around the globe.
The Kew Gardens Festival of Cinema was founded by four local independent filmmakers with a passion to get movies made and to have those artistic voices heard. Understanding the struggle in todays film environment in showcasing independent cinema, their goal is to establish a presence and awareness of cinematic creativity throughout Kew Gardens Queens and the neighboring communities.
For its inaugural year The Kew Gardens Festival of Cinema aims to become influential in bringing the community together over a ten day period consisting of film screenings and other activities. With encouraging Q&A's and industry panels we expect to broaden the appeal of Independent film and promote audience participation.
As a competitive festival, our program will consist of over 100 remarkable short and feature length films from all genres around the globe, including often overlooked categories such as Documentary, Horror, Comedy, Animation and Experimental. Each film will then be judged, in their respected categories, by our specially selected panel of industry professionals. Winners in each category will receive a statuette at our Grand Awards Gala on the final night of the festival.
Playing exclusively at the historic Kew Gardens Cinemas in NY, Queens only Art House theater. We expect to draw not only artists and filmmakers from around NYC but from all over the world. Conference attendees will learn the essential rules and tools of pitching from the experts.
The 2-Minute Pitches
