YEREVAN Film Festival 2016

My arrival here in Yerevan for the Film Festival coincided with the  events in Nice which have sent the world into shock when a Franco-Arab truck driver plowed into the crowd celebrating Bastille day on the beachfront promenade in the Riviera city.

This news, almost immediately followed by the news of a coup attempt by the army in Turkey has dominated the Tv waves ever since. Initial body count, 84 people killed in Nice,  180 or more killed in Turkey. Hundreds injured. Hundreds more traumatised.

News like this  unfortunately  makes a small film festival in a small Caucasian country like Armenia seem like a trivial side-show,

Nevertheless,

The Show must go on, so here is what I have seen so far in Yerevan at the 13th Golden Apricot Film Festival.

A brief closeup sighting of movie star Jacqueline Bisset , 72, who is the trophy guest of the festival.

"Who Killed the Armenians" a powerful highly detailed Egyptian documentary on the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey, the first film on this deplorable subject from an Islamic country.

"In A Better World", Danish drama by star director Susanne Bier, focusing on a severely disturbed teenage boy and a Swedish surgeon who does volunteer medical service in a war torn African country.

BULLITT, the classic 1968 Hollywood thriller by Peter Yates, starring Steve McQueen and featuring the amazing car chase with McQueen at the wheel of a hot black Mustang pursuing the villains over the bouncy hills of San Francisco. Jacqeline Bissett was third billed although her role as McQueen's wife was extremely small limited to a few bedroom scenes and not much more. BULLITT was shown as a special screening at the state-of-art Cinema Star in the State-of-Art Dalmas Mall on the southern outskirts of the city far from the festival center at the Kino Moskva.

"A Very Ordinary Citizen", a new Iranian drama about domestic alienation, the relinquishing of a trip to Canada by a young woman, and the stretching if the law by an elderly Iranian-Armenian man. Director Masjid Barzegar, a leading Teheran filmmaker and producer, mid I siting the festival  Teheran is only a stone's throw away from Yerevan and has a significant Armenian population.

Still to come in the festival sampling of Bissett films; "Murder on the Orient Express", 1974, and Truffaut's "Day For Night", 1973.

Ps:  I spent a night in Nice and walked the Promenade des Anglais, scene of Bastille Night truck rampage just a few weeks ago on the way back from Cannes

By Maria Esteves – July 31, 2016

The Asian American Women Media Makers (AAWMM) Talk Back with multi-award winning Hong Kong director and screenwriter Mabel Cheung, moderated by co-founder S. Casper Wong, AAWMM, was held at the Museum of Chinese in New York (MOCA), Saturday, July 23, 12PM. Presented by AAIFF16, director Cheung discussed her early film career from Hong Kong to England to New York, her first trilogy works (The Illegal Immigrant, An Autumn's Tale, Eight Tales of Gold), her transition from personal to political theme films (The Soong Sisters) and her collaboration over the years with screenwriter, producer and director Alex Law (Cheung’s spouse).

Questions posed to director Cheung by moderator Wong included: “What drove you into this crazy business to want to get an MFA? Do you want to talk a little bit about the transition from increasingly personal films and you taking on more political themes in your work? How do you create your scripts, are you very methodical in creating these characters? You mentioned Alex Law, can you talk about your collaboration has been over the years?"

Western Europe’s only major festival of cinematography returns to Bristol, UK, with a programme of workshops, master-classes, screenings, talks, demos and Q&As led by some of the film industry’s best-respected off-screen talent and the latest insights on how new imaging technologies promise to revolutionise filmmaking.

Centre for Moving Image Research, Arnolfini, Bristol, UK, BS1 4QA

New inventions with the potential to revolutionise how films are made will be in the spotlight when the second edition of CINEFEST – Western Europe’s biggest celebration of cinematography - takes place in Bristol, UK, this September.

CINEFEST 2016 is being staged at Arnolfini, next to Bristol Harbour, from September 20 to 24, by the Centre for Moving Image Research at University of the West of England, to coincide with the city’s international Encounters Festival of short film.

It will offer a daily mix of master-classes with leading cinematographers, how-to workshops, Q&As, insider revelations, practical demonstrations and panel discussions involving both film industry professionals and cultural commentators.

Among the festival’s highlights will be updates on new technologies led by David Stump, the US-based based visual effects guru whose film and TV credits include two X-Men movies and the Breaking Bad episode Fly

The David Stump sessions will include the latest news about the development of the Lytro Cinema Camera and its game-changing capacity to allow multiple alterations of angle, focus, frame speed and motion toalready-captured footage and on the scope for Higher Dynamic Range Imaging (HDR) to pick-up details of light and shade nearer than ever before to those of the human eye .

Festival producer Sarah Sparke says: “Very many festivals do a great job of drawing attention to, and applauding, the best-made feature, documentary, animated and short films but there are far fewer chances to examine and explore what goes into making a screen scene memorable.  CINEFEST aims to fill that gap by focusing firmly on the creative and technical know-how required behind the film camera, sharing the latest results of moving image research and innovation and giving existing and would-be filmmakers and serious students of film a rare and enticing chance to pick the brains of the people behind some of today’s most thrilling screen visuals.”

CINEFEST’S full timetable is due to be published in August.

To keep up-to-date with CINEFEST news, plans and ticket booking arrangements, please visit www.cinefest.co.uk; find the Centre for Moving Image Research on Facebook or follow @CineFestUK on Twitter.

On Sunday, July 24th of 2016, an announcement had been delivered to the public about cancelling the 4th edition of Duhok IFF due to economical crisis and lack of support. This news shocked the public and was followed by a reaction from the festival’s audience, national and international film community, several supporting campaigns by artists, filmmakers and journalists from the four parts of Kurdistan and the international community. Voices raised asking to resume this extra ordinary event and its positive impact on the region.

Several campaigns started and hundreds of local and international film community, public, and film festival representatives signed to support and resume the festival. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, July 26th a gathering was made by the people of Duhok, artists and public in the city center calling to resume Duhok IFF and protested against the cancelation of the event.

This chain of campaigns and reactions left a remarkable impact on Duhok IFF’s organizers, and a pressure on the government to resume and support the festival in these hard conditions and crisis. This was followed by a meeting with Duhok’s Governor, Mr. Farhad Atroshi, who showed his kind support and discussed the possibilities of resuming the festival with the organizers upon the request of the people and the high demand of the film community, worldwide. Therefore, as a respect to the call of Duhok citizens, artists and public figures of Kurdistan and international community, the Duhok Governorate took action and announced it’s support by securing the required budget to resume the festival.

Duhok IFF's crew, would like to show acknowledgment and appreciations to Kurdistan Prime Minister, H.E. Mr. Nechirvan Barzani for his continuous support. Also, we send our thanks and appreciations to Mr. Farhad Atroshi, the Governor of Duhok for taking immediate action to rescue this cultural event, and not let it die. We also thank Mr. Khalid Doski, the Minister of Youth and Cultural Affairs of Kurdistan Regional Government for his support. Special Thanks to Duhok's Artists Syndicate, Mali Cinema of Sulemani, parliaments and officials, media agencies for their coverages, NGOs, artists and supporters from the four parts of Kurdistan and world wide.

Eventually, a very special thank to the people of Duhok for their supporting campaigns. They proved that this festival is each and everyone’s asset. All these, added more to our duties and responsibilities towards the event. Therefore, we announce the continuation of Duhok 4th international film festival to be held in September 9th – 16th, 2016.

Many Thanks to this year’s Juries, filmmakers and participants for understanding the situation.

ANIMAZE ANNOUNCES FULL PROGRAMMING

ANIMAZE: The Montreal International Animation Film Festival is set to announce its full lineup in advance of the festival on August 18-21. Now in its third year, ANIMAZE is bringing a world of animation to Montreal. With a selection of over 170 short and feature-length animated films at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, an outdoor 360º Dome with planetarium-style projection and a Virtual Reality Cinema, Animaze has an inspiring and dynamic range of content across platforms and mediums.

“Montreal plays a key role in animation history, and we want to capitalize on its bright future by unifying and connecting creative people in animation, video games and new media. The possibilities have never been greater,” said Laurie Gordon, Animaze festival director.

ANIMAZE will also feature an industry conference with appearances from leaders in animation, cinema and technology, among them Nelvana cofounder Clive Smith, Carpe Diem’s Marie-Claude Beauchamp (La Guerre des Tuques), and TELETOON director of content Athena Georgaklis. It will highlight the many Québec innovations in virtual reality, immersive content and storytelling.

In addition to many other Quebec premieres, ANIMAZE will host new episodes of Au pays de têtes à claques, and its new English version Blockheads, airing on Adult Swim Canada in the fall.

The outdoor 360º dome in collaboration is a first in Quebec and offers immersive end-to-end projections with surround sound. Making its Canadian premiere at the Dome is Android Jones’ Samskara. OSM 360º sets visuals to the music of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra directed by Kent Nagano.

The film festival lineup includes films from over 45 countries in a wide range of genres and styles. The International Student Film Contest features entries from students at over nine Quebec animation schools including the Centre NAD, Cégep du Vieux Montréal and UQAM.

In collaboration with Boulevard St-Laurent,ANIMAZE will host two free public outdoor screenings on Friday and Saturday night, featuring a showcase on international student films, a horror section, and a female directors’ focus.
