-- The National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture (NAMAC) announced today the full line-up for ALLIANCE, its bi-annual conference taking place June 9 - 12, 2016 at the Oakland Marriott Convention Center. ALLIANCE 2016 is a conference for media arts and culture practitioners, organizations, thinkers and doers. It creates a space where conversations about collaboration, innovation, creativity and impact bust out in the open; a conference of new ideas, and a celebration of community. Independent media makers are our most vital source for making meaning of the news cycle and capturing the essence of the change facing our communities. ALLIANCE is about embracing the diversity of independent voices and celebrating the most exciting stories and strategies that are connecting with audiences nationwide.

"We are so excited to celebrate the media arts community's extraordinary talent, and to bring thought leaders from across the country face to face with the rich cultural diversity of Oakland," said Wendy Levy, Executive Director of NAMAC. "This event is about creating a space where the artists who are defining our culture and creating change within their communities can come together with the individuals and organizations who make their work possible to tackle the challenges we're all facing. I can only imagine the magic that will happen here in June."

ALLIANCE showcases local talent and stories to a national audience of media arts influencers. Pete Nicks, director of the award-winning documentary "The Waiting Room," will share an extended clip from his highly anticipated next film "The Oakland Police Project" and discuss his views on how community-based media can create meaningful change. Stanley Nelson's "Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution" sparked a national conversation on race; outreach partners Firelight Media, ITVS, Youth Speaks, KQED, Center for Media Justice and former Panther Ericka Huggins will explore the Panthers' relevance today. Bay Area filmmakers Kelly Duane de la Vega and Katie Galloway's "The Return" follows several formerly incarcerated men coming home to the Bay Area and tracks the impact of Prop 36 California's unprecedented criminal justice reform; they will join two other filmmaking teams to share their experiences working with the California Humanities' Documentary Project. Award-winning sound designer James LeBrecht will lead a discussion about how to ensure voices of disabled artists are not missing in the media arts. ALLIANCE will also include the world premiere of the Oakland Fence Project, an interactive photography exhibit by and about the people of Oakland, CA, which features giant format photo installation with interactive links to local stories.

Additional highlights from the four-day program include:

  • A workshop exploring the future of virtual reality storytelling with Todd Shaiman, Head of Content Strategy, Google VR and Karen Dufilho-Rosen, Executive Producer, Spotlight Stories (Friday June 10, 11:00 am)
  • A keynote talk by Jax Deluca, Director of Media Arts at the National Endowment for the Arts about her first six months on the job and the current media arts funding climate (Friday June 10, 5:15 pm)
  • A presentation by Sarah Crowell, Artistic Director of Destiny Arts Center - "It's About Power: Youth, Media & Environmental Justice" (Saturday June 11, 9:15 am)
  • A keynote performance by Marc Bamuthi Joseph, Chief of Program and Pedagogy at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (Saturday June 11, 4:30 pm)
  • A number of exciting events in the Youth Media Collective Action Lab track, including programs related to NAMAC's innovative 50 State Dinner Party Project, an examination of the Every Student Succeeds Act, a panel on the importance of media literacy with members of the National Association for Media Literacy Education, and much more.

To explore the full conference schedule, visit namac.org.

ALLIANCE program features media makers and the organizations and community leaders supporting and creating platforms to ensure this work connects with audiences. National media funders participating in ALLIANCE include: Fledgling Fund, Ford Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation and the NEA. Participating media organizations include: AIR, ITVS, POV, Skylight Media, Sundance, Working Films, and more. NAMAC's bi-annual conference, now titled ALLIANCE, serves a national network of media arts nonprofits that share best practices, craft strategies for growth, and set the agenda for the future.

How to attend: Register in advance at namac.org. Full Conference pass is $500, one-day pass is $250. Discounts available for members of NAMAC and other leading Bay Area media arts organizations.

    Winning script announced!!!

    $

    0

Mr. Bassi has chosen a winning script from the top 10:

"Having read all the top ten screenplays I chose 'The Invention' as the winner.

All the selected screenplays offered some beautiful moments. They also offered some challenges for a director to sink his/her teeth into.

For me, 'The Invention' felt more well-rounded in its approach to storytelling. Though the narrative is dialogue heavy, I feel it has the potential to be leaner and allow for a visual short film. 'The Invention' is not as stylised as some of the other screenplays.

Its story has the structure other scripts lacked. Hence allowing for character development and tightening of the plot. Apart from the challenges in the story and plot, I do see challenges to the shooting of the film. Challenges such as some CGI elements and some old school special effects.

Being a screenwriter myself I know we want our screenplays realised. To that end we often write in a way that would make it easy and cheap to shoot but only a few stories lend themselves to that. In the end, we are visual storytellers and our stories cannot do without some visual elements.

I am grateful for the opportunity to read the work of so many writers and learn new things."

Congratulations to Dennis Hennessey, the author of 'The Invention'!

Writers and Filmmaker's Winning Director Shekhar BassiDirector - Shekhar Bassi

Witers and Filmmaker's Winning Screenwriter Dennis HennesseyScreenwriter - Dennis Hennessey

Deeply inspired by early Spielberg movies and the Twilight Zone at a young age, Dennis Hennessey began writing short stories when he was 11. He later wrote his first screenplay, a supernatural thriller, in High School for an AV class film. From that point forward, he knew this is what he was meant to do. He eventually would transfer to Emerson College where he majored in Communications with a concentration in Film. While there, his screenplays and short stories received considerable praise and attention.

Unable to break into the film industry, Hennessey put writing on the back burner as he turned his focus to starting a family and operating an independent record label. All the while, he continued to feel the pull of writing. Then, upon receiving an unexpected handwritten letter from an old college classmate praising his screenplays, Hennessey became re-energized and began writing again.

He currently has 4 feature length screenplays, 4 shorts, and roughly 100 story ideas to his credit. Hennessey is now writing regularly and hopes to resume the pursuit of a career as a screenwriter.

CAMPUS MOVIEFEST ANNOUNCES DATES FOR TERMINUS, JUNE 16 - 19, 2016

Four-Day Event Bringing the Best of Film, TV and Gaming to Downtown Atlanta

Badges Now On Sale, Beginning at $99 for Students and $129 for Non-Students

Campus MovieFest, the world’s largest student film festival, has announced the dates for the inaugural TERMINUS - a four-day event dedicated to bringing together young creatives and industry professionals for the best of film, TV and gaming. Taking place June 16 through 19, 2016 at the Marriott Marquis in Downtown Atlanta and throughout the city, TERMINUS will feature hands-on workshops, educational panels, game design expos, exclusive film and TV screenings, live-play tournaments, awards, chances to rub elbows and network with celebrities and industry leaders, and much more. Ideas United, producers of TERMINUS and creators of Campus MovieFest, chose Atlanta to launch TERMINUS based in large part to the city’s ongoing dedication to supporting and cultivating the entertainment industry.

“We are excited to bring the TERMINUS experience to Atlanta, where we started Campus MovieFest 16 years ago" says David Roemer, CEO & Co- Founder of Ideas United. “We’re thrilled to create an unforgettable opportunity for thousands of students and professionals from across the country that are looking for new ways to create and share with the world.”

The four-day experience creates the ultimate platform for emerging talents and industry professionals alike to take their art and careers to the next level. TERMINUS grew from Campus MovieFest (CMF), the world’s largest student film festival that started in 2001 when four students at Emory University provided their peers with everything they needed to make movies in one week. CMF has since featured more than 1,000,000 students at colleges and universities worldwide. Each participant in the inaugural TERMINUS film festival will also receive all the necessary technology and training to tell their stories for free, thanks to corporate partners and schools. Past winners have walked away with over $2 million in prizes and seen their films on screens big and small. Campus winners will move on to compete at TERMINUS, earn professional and educational opportunities, and see their work at the Cannes Film Festival, in-flight on Virgin America, and much more.

Badges to TERMINUS are available now starting at $99 for students and $129 for non-students before increasing on May 17th. Attendees will receive an all-access badge, giving them first-come, first-served access to participate in hands-on workshops, educational panels, game design expos, exclusive film and TV screenings, live-play tournaments and so much more. Certain activities may require pre-registration and/or additional fees. Badges are available online at www.terminusevent.com

TERMINUS is produced by Ideas United and sponsored by Adobe, Panasonic, Google, Sennheiser, The Elfenworks Foundation and more. Visit www.terminusevent.com for the most up-to-date information. Stay connected on Twitter at www.twitter.com/terminusevent and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/TerminusEvent

Open Gateway to Vancouver at Canada Pavilion

The Vancouver Economic Commission (VEC) is glad to be back for our third year at Annecy International Animated Film Festival and Market! The VEC storms Annecy alongside nine studios – a sample of the healthy digital media, VFX and animation ecosystem in Vancouver – to connect to an international market of professionals, seek new opportunities for collaboration, and to showcase Vancouver’s robust animation portfolio. New York: Bosnian-Herzegovinian Film Festival, 2016

The thirteenth BH film festival was held at the Anthology Film Archives and the School of Visual Arts from May 25-28.  Opening the festival, a film forum was held for the first time at the Anthology, presenting two non –competitive documentaries, Faruk Sokolovic’s 2015  No Excuses  and the  2015 100 Million Dollar House by Reshad Kulenovic. They covered severe human rights violations in the Balkans and the West Bank and were followed by an expert panel on the development of Bosnian cinema from the national to transnational frameworks. During the three days session at the School of Visual Arts 14 productions were shown in the competition selected from more than 60 submissions. They included feature films, documentaries and short films with Q & A sessions by the director of Our Everyday Life, Ines Tanovic, its producer Alem Babic, and the actor Uliks Fehmilu.  Productions for the festival were submitted by filmmakers from Bosnia-Herzegovina but also others focusing on BH themes. The BHFF fest is organized by two New York based non – profit organizations, the Voice of Bosnia and Hercegovina and the Academy of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The festival is supported by the Association of Filmmakers in Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Foundation of Cinematography Sarajevo and private sponsors.  It has the objective of showing contemporary, political, and cultural issues of that country, is the only platform in the New York metropolitan area for films from Bosnia-Herzegovina and serves to expand its audience base. Golden Apple Awards were bestowed on the best documentary, I can Speak (Mirza Skenderagic), the best short film, Damaged Goods (Nermin Hamzagic) and the best feature Tigers  (Danis Tanovic).  The audience award for best picture went to Our Everyday Life (Ines Tanovic) which was also honored by the jury with a special recognition.

The Association of Filmmakers of BH is the principal force encouraging filmmaking  in that region and had 108 members in 2015. Its members have received numerous prestigious awards over the past 14 years including the Oscar, the Tiger Award (Rotterdam), the Leopard (Locarno), the Golden Bear (Berlin), and the Critic’s Grand Prix (Cannes) to name but a few.  Because most of the submissions to New York’s BHFF come from members of the Association, the high quality of the few productions selected are not surprising. Bosnia-Herzegovina is a small country, has no film industry and produced 51 films last year including two feature films. There were only four minority co-productions and one international production where that country partnered as a principal for, Blood of My  Blood (Marco Bellocchio). Last year Bosnia-Herzegovina joined film promoting agencies of the European Union and should therefore be able to expand its limited film making resources.

To discuss some of the noteworthy productions screened in the competition:

    Lionheart, Sabrina Begovic, Coric, 2015

Periods of turmoil, fractured borders, broken security, corruption and economic deprivations created a ready terrain for human trafficking as has been the case in much of the Balkans after the 1990s and specifically in Bosnia. With the expansion of the European Union, an influx of East European women involved in the sex trade has been characteristic for affluent West European countries. Prostitution for most women is not voluntary but a result of trafficking where impoverished women looking for a better life become victims of the highly profitable sex trade.  Lionheart offers a first person account of a woman tricked into the sex trade who after severe abuse escapes into an equally oppressive marriage but is able to eventually to free herself.

    Picnic, Jure Pavlovic, 2015

In this 13 minute short the conflictual relation between a youngster and his father and its momentary resolution is revealed in a brief encounter the father is allowed during a visit at his son’s institution. Though the source of the conflict remains unknown and the son’s lifestyle is rejected by the father an underlying emotional bond creates harmony when the meeting comes to an end. The initial hostility fades and the separation when they part is painful to both of them. Picnic is a sensitive and subdued, but effective, depiction of the father-son relation.

No One’s Child, Vuk Rsumovic, 2014

The narrative of this impressive feature reminds viewers of Francoise Truffaut’s film The Wild Child and is also based on a true story covering the transformation change of a feral child over four-year period. In a winter of the late 80s, in Bosnia Herzegovina’s mountains, Serbian hunters find a boy in the forest of who seems to have been living among wolves. He moves on his hands and feet, can only express guttural sounds and fights the people trying to save him. Institutionalized in an orphanage in Belgrade and named Haris he is diagnosed as completely lacking social abilities. He acts spontaneously on instincts and impulses and for the experts has virtually no chance to become human. As in Truffaut’s film featuring a feral boy, Haris is also slowly socialized in basic communication and skills. But it is not a professional helping him but an understanding roommate Zika who defends him against the staff and bullying children. Through the depiction of Haris becoming human, of the orphanage, and of his exploration of the outside world after he graduates Rsumovic provides a realistic understanding of the conflictual society Haris has entered. He also touches on the importance of  and individual’s personal and national identity formation.  Because he is Bosnian Haris is forced to leave the orphanage by orders of the Bosnian authorities in the early nineties and to return there though that society is now torn by civil war.  Having no place to go to he is forced to join the local militia and becomes a child soldier. Escaping he ends up lonely on the grounds in a wintery forest with a wolf observing him from the distance.  Haris the feral child has come full circle rejoining his past.  At the Venice Film Festival Rsumovic received the International Critics’ Week award for the best film and several other prices for his authentic and lucid presentation.

    Tigers, Danis Tanovic, 2014

Directed by the noted film maker Tanovic, who received an Oscar for No One’s Land and a Silver Bear for An Episode in the Life of an Ironmaker, Tigers is a fact based, eye-opening, documentary-style feature film about a whistle blowing salesman who takes on the giant international Nestle corporation for selling baby formula in Pakistan. Though Nestle has consistently denied responsibility, the baby formula can be fatal if used with dirty water. In Tigers Nestle, referred to with the pseudonym Lasta in the film to avoid legal issues, is willing to engage in any and all action needed to retain and expand its markets. Given the high birth rate and the lack of access to clean water for most of the population in Pakistan and other similar countries the sale of baby formula is a deadly and incredibly lucrative undertaking. The salesman Ayan receives from Lasta cash to ingratiate himself to pediatricians and their staff through presents and scores richly rewarded high sales until a doctor shows him footage of dying and disabled infants who had taken the Lasta baby formula. As he observes this firsthand when visiting a slum and the impoverished people living there. They cannot buy clean water for the formula but are also influenced by the totally fallacious advertising that baby formula improves their children’s health. Played convincingly by the well-known Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi, Ayan engages in a fight with Lasta, resigns his position as a salesman and prepares a documented report for the World Health Organization.  But no action is taken. To the contrary, he is advised by a military general that in Pakistan Lasta and economic interests essentially control decision making. He is briefly imprisoned, receives death threats for him and his family, has to hide, and moves his wife and child to the safer countryside. No one listens to his pleas that inaction means death for more and more infants. He is eventually forced to leave the country for Canada.  Approached by a large German television station to participate in a documentary on the deadly infant formula scandal he agrees to collaborate. His interactions with the producers provide the framework for Tigers.  Lacking moral courage German television refuses to show the documentary for fear of being sued. After living close to a decade exiled in Canada, Ayan is joined by his family and makes a living as a taxi driver. Nestle still sells baby formula in Pakistan.  This is unfortunately unsurprising given the power of large international corporations. The opening sequence of the film sets the tone. It transcribes the 1978 off screen exchange between Senator Robert Kennedy and a representative of a baby formula company. Though the consequences of the formula on infants’ death in developing countries are acknowledged by the representative any corporate responsibility is denied with the justification that providing clean water is the responsibility of local governments.

With its small selection of films the Bosnia Herzegovina festival has broadened the interest in issue oriented productions from that region meeting international standards.

“It’s the final opportunity for Perth audiences to see these fantastic big-screen titles and their last taste of Rev’s international program for 12 months.”

“This opportunity shows how many people in Perth support Revelation and the films we screen.”

Revelation is proudly supported by the Australian and Western Australian Governments through Screen Australia and ScreenWest, and the City of Vincent as a presentation partner.

The 64th edition of the San Sebastian Film Festival will dedicate a retrospective to the French director Jacques Becker

Jacques Becker, who was born and died in Paris (1906-1960), only made thirteen feature films in a relatively short period of time, between 1942 and 1960. However this baggage small in number but prolific in important titles such as Casque d’Or (Golden Helmet, 1952), Touchez pas au grisbi (Hands Off the Loot, 1954) and Le Trou (The Hole, 1960) was more than enough to earn Becker consideration as one of the essential names of the evolution of French cinema.

Communist in his beliefs, although he never made social cinema in the strict sense of the word, Becker trained in the cinema of the Popular Front and worked as an assistant to Jean Renoir. His influences came both from the work of the author of La grande illusion (Grand Illusion, 1937), one of the eight films by Renoir on which Becker worked as an assistant, and from the classic North American movies made prior to World War II. He was a huge fan of King Vidor and Howard Hawks, for example. His style stemmed from a sort of classicism, soon moving into modernity, refining itself at neck-breaking speed during the occupation and post-war period. It comes as no surprise that the majority of the influential Cahiers du cinéma critics always defended him as being one of the few directors saved from the generalised attack on French post-war cinema: for Truffaut, Godard and company, enemies of academicism, Becker was always on a par with his mentor Renoir, with Jean Cocteau, Jean-Pierre Melville, Max Ophüls, Robert Bresson and Jacques Tati.

A lover of detail and meticulous both when recreating periods in the studio or shooting outdoors, stylist of the mise-en-scène and creator of unrepeatable atmospheres such as the romantic and violent Casque d’Or (Golden Helmet), Becker practiced impressionism and realism equally, paying as much attention to the historical periods of his tales as he did to the psychology of his characters. The Cahiers du cinéma critics saw in him the modernity that they themselves would put into practice on moving into production as part of the Nouvelle vague. His early days were anything but easy. Prior to his official debut with Dernier atout (1942), Becker made a couple of shorts, participated in a collective documentary promoted by the French Communist Party on the Popular Front electoral campaign – La vie est à nous (1936), with the collaboration of Jean Renoir and Henri Cartier-Bresson, among others – and began the shooting of L’or du Cristobal (Cristobal’s Gold, 1940), finished by Jean Stelli and for which Becker never felt responsible.

While the spectator will find all kinds of different genres in his cinema, none of his films fully correspond to the codes of a specific category, despite being based on notions as obvious as comedy – Antoine etAntoinette (Antoine and Antoinette, 1947), Rendez-vous de juillet (Rendezvous in July, 1949), Édouard et Caroline (Edward and Caroline 1951); melodramas with Goupi mains rouges (1943), Falbalas (Paris Frills, 1945), Rue de l’Estrapade (1953); gangster movies with Touchez pas au grisbi, an exceptional detective story with Jean Gabin and Casque d’Or (Golden Helmet), a fabulous portrayal of the Paris underworld in the early 20th century, with Simone Signoret and Serge Reggiani; the artistic biopic Montparnasse 19 (The Lovers of Montparnasse, 1958), a peculiar look at the last two years in the life of painter Amedeo Modigliani and the tale of a prison escape to which he gave, with Le Trou (The Hole), what was perhaps the masterpiece of the genre. One of the strongest characteristics of his style is the reinvention of codes and formats. He also made movies of more popular roots with a film of exotic adventures starring Fernandel, Ali Baba et les quarante voleurs (Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, 1954), and another of mystery and sophisticated white-gloved thieves, Les aventures d’Arsène Lupin (The Adventures of Arsène Lupin, 1957).

Becker died on 21st February 1960, a month before the French premiere of his posthumous work, Le Trou (The Hole). His remains rest in Montparnasse cemetery. He had two sons, the filmmaker Jean Becker and the director of photography Étienne Becker, who died in 1995. In the last years of his life, Jacques Becker was married to the actress Françoise Fabian.

The retrospective, including all of Becker’s feature films, half of which were never commercially released in Spain, is organised by the San Sebastian Festival in collaboration with the Spanish Film Archive. To complete the season, a book will be published about the director, coordinated by Quim Casas.

A poster portraying the San Sebastian Festival as a meeting point is the image of the 64th edition

Its author is San Sebastian designer Jorge Elósegui, from Estudio Primo

The Newton Auditorium at the Eureka! Zientzia Museoa was the setting for presentation of the new image for the 64th edition of the San Sebastian Festival. For the first time, ten prestigious studios were invited to create the Official Selection poster. The Festival management committee has selected the proposal submitted by Jorge Elósegui, from Estudio Primo, highlighting the idea of the Festival as a meeting point.

“The poster refers to the Festival as a meeting point for industry professionals, journalists and spectators”, described Elósegui. This is a poster which is “colourful, lively yet elegant thanks to the careful use made of the typographies”, with “a strong hand-crafted component”. All of the characters are cut out manually, and the textures and doodles generated both for the figures and for the background endeavour to make the image “richer, more organised and dynamic”. One of the creator’s intentions was to promote connection between the poster and the other applications, particularly the header screened prior to the films which, as a spectator, he believes to be “the most magical moment” of the Festival. “It is interesting for the poster and the header to support one another in order to create something powerful from the graphic and communicative point of view”, the author explained.

Estudio Primo is a spin-off of San Sebastian’s Primo collective which, since its foundation in 2002, has been dedicated to publishing records and fanzines while organising exhibitions and fiestas, among other activities. In recent years, Elósegui has created the posters for festivals running in the city, such as Surfilm and Dock of the Bay.

The meeting also included display of the winning proposals of the poster competition called by the Festival for the New Directors, Horizontes Latinos, Pearls, Zabaltegi-Tabakalera and Culinary Cinema sections. Open to graphic designers all over the world, 482 authors submitted 1,692 proposals for this 4th edition. A jury consisting of the Managing Director of Donostia Kultura, Jaime Otamendi, the Director of the San Sebastian 2016 cultural programme, Xabier Payá, the Deputy Directors of the Festival, Maialen Beloki and Lucía Olaciregui, and the Festival Director, José Luis Rebordinos, chose five posters conceived in La Paz (Bolivia), Estella, Caracas (Venezuela), San Sebastian and Lleida, finding their inspiration in subjects such as the vertigo of doing something those first times, the relationship between technology and passion, the emotion of discovering a gem, the free flight of a bird or the films of Esther Williams.

    New Directors: VUELA (fly)

    Author: Marco Tóxico

    BIOGRAPHY

Marco Antonio Guzmán (La Paz, Bolivia, 1982) has created covers for records, books and magazines, illustrations for press and publications. He designed the official poster of the Montreal International Film Festival in 2014, and last year his poster Tuberías 3 was selected as the official image of the Zabaltegi section.

    DESCRIPTION

The poster represents “the vertigo of doing something those first times”. According to the Bolivian artist, chosen as one of the ten best illustrators by the COW International Design Festival, “starting to film, starting to create, has a strong component of leaping into the void and finding out whether or not you can fly”.

Horizontes latinos: UNA MIRADA A TRAVÉS (A look through)

    Author: Concepción Domingo Ragel

    BIOGRAPHY

Concepción Domingo, a designer from Madrid living in Estella (Navarre), discovered her vocation in 2009, proceeding to launch her professional career under her own label, Inkice, which has earned her awards and acknowledgements at home and abroad.

    DESCRIPTION

In the words of the designer, the poster combines “technology”, in the shape of a projector with a turning reel, and “passion”, represented by a woman’s hair. The image contains two visions, reflected by human faces which “envelop the central eye, expression of that critical, passionate and original look at Latin American cinema”.

    perlak: CAMPO PERLADO (PEARLY FIELD)

    Author: Raxel Andara

    BIOGRAPHY

Raxel Osbaldo Andara Graterol is a 19-year-old from Venezuela, winner of three FILA (Festival Imaginario de Las Artes) awards in 2014 and finalist last year in the Ciclo Siete sustainable design competition. He is currently in his fourth semester of studying Social Communication at the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello in Caracas.

    DESCRIPTION

Campo perlado evokes in the spectator the impression of having discovered a cinematographic gem. “It endeavours to represent the feeling of observing a cinema pearl in its full splendour, where its well-polished hits and its small but interesting misses come together in a conglomeration of sensations”, he explains.

Zabaltegi-Tabakalera: PÁJARO EN EL CIELO (bird in the sky)

    Author: Maite Rosende Gutierrez

    BIOGRAPHY

Maite Rosende (San Sebastian, 1991) passed an advanced qualification in Mural Painting before deciding to study illustration and complete her training with graphic design, photography and video editing. Last year, her poster entitled Mi horizonte was chosen as the image of Horizontes Latinos.

    DESCRIPTION

For Maite Rosende, Zabaltegi-Tabakalera is a “section open to an enormously wide variety of film proposals, where there are no formal rules or limits in regard to subject matter”, which is why, in this poster, “it is represented with a bird that spreads its wings ready to fly away, free”.

    Culinary Zinema: CALEIDOSCOPIO (kaleidoscope)

    Author: Antonio Pontí Ibars

    BIOGRAPHY

Antoni Pontí Ibars (Lleida, 1966) is a creator specialising in graphic design, photography, art directing and costume design for cinema and advertising. The Catalan artist designed the official poster of the 61st edition (Óptico) and the image of Horizontes Latinos for the 60th edition (Latin City).

    DESCRIPTION

The image contains “the movement and rhythm” typical of kitchens, “places of frantic work disciplines”. This concept is represented as “a dance of colours, shapes and flavours”, articulated into patterns taking as their reference “the zenithal figures of Esther Williams’ films”, explained Toni Pontí.

    Savage Cinema: INGRAVIDEZ (WEIGHTLESSNES)

    Author: Carlos Mauricio

    BIOGRAPHY

Savage Cinema, the adventure and action sports film section created in 2013 in collaboration with Red Bull Media House, has as its author the art director and graphic designer from Galicia, Carlos Mauricio (Maurix), who has been creating works for companies and studios all over the world since 1998.

    DESCRIPTION

“Going beyond sports challenges, we talk about flying, imagining, about the weightlessness of a very small figure who merges into his environment”, explains the author. The idea is to “remove the distance between the actor/sportsperson and the spectator and open the section to everyone, a section often telling stories of lives that extend beyond exploits to place their actors in scenarios and situations that everyone can identify with”.

    Retrospectives

The posters of the classic and thematic retrospectives have been created by the San Sebastian Festival and Eurosíntesis.
The image of The Act of Killing. Cinema and global violence season, which offers a selection of films helping to analyse situations of violence occurring all over the world, takes as its basis a photograph from the film Johnny Mad Dog, directed by Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire. For its part, the poster for the retrospective on Jacques Becker, one of the most brilliant links between post-war French cinema and the Nouvelle vague, comes from the shoot of Ali Baba et les quarante voleurs (Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves).

Also presented were the promotional clips of the retrospectives, created by Carlos Rodríguez at Morgan Creativos.
