Berlinale 2016: The Panorama Audience Awards go to Junction 48 and Who's Gonna Love Me Now?

The public has cast its votes: the 18thPanorama Audience Awards – presented by the Berlinale Panorama section in collaboration with radioeins, Berlin-Brandenburg’s public radio and television station (rbb), go to Junction 48 by Udi Aloni for best fiction film and Who's Gonna Love Me Now? by Tomer and Barak Heymann for best documentary.

Udi Aloni may be called a loyal friend of the Berlinale – since 2003 he has presented all of his films at the festival. Junction 48 was the sixth production to premiere in the Panorama section. For Tomer Heymann it is the second Panorama Audience Award – his film Paper Dolls won in 2006. This time he shares the award: Who’s Gonna Love Me Now? was co-directed by the brothers Tomer and Barak Heymann.

In both the fiction and documentary categories, the winning films took the lead relatively early on and were able to hold this position until all votes were counted.

The official award ceremony will be held on Sunday, February 21, at 5.00 pm in CinemaxX 7 at Potsdamer Platz. The awards will be presented by Panorama curator Wieland Speck and radioeins programme manager Robert Skuppin. Radioeins film expert Knut Elstermann will host the event. Directly after the ceremony, the Panorama Dokumente winner will be shown. The winning fiction film will be screened at 8.00 pm, also in CinemaxX 7.

The Panorama Audience Award has been given since 1999. Since 2011, not only the best fiction film but also the best documentary film have received awards. During the festival, moviegoers are asked to rate the films shown in Panorama on voting cards after the screenings. In 2016 a total of 30.000 votes were cast and counted.

This year Panorama presented 51 feature-length films from 33 countries, of which 17 screened in the Panorama Dokumente series.

 SEEYOUSOUND

The inauguration of the second edition of Seeyousound International Music Film Festival will take place on Thursday the 25th of February at 9 p.m. at Cinema Massimo in Turin and will be accompanied by the screening of B-Movie: Lust & Sound in West-Berlin 1979–1989, a documentary premiered at Berlinale in 2015 and Seeyousound will be the first one to show the film before its introduction into the Italian cinemas. The documentary presents to the audience a collage of authentic video registrations recorded over the period of 10 years, preceding the fall of the Berlin Wall. It portrays the unrest, the revolution, and the protest that, as it often happens, is expressed by music and excesses. We can define it as a flashback to the 80’s in West Berlin. In the documentary the three directors Jörg A. Hoppe, Klaus Maeck and Heiko Lange collaborate with the English musician and producer Mark Reeder, which after moving from Manchester to West Berlin in late 70’s, attracted by the wave of innovative electronic music, is the narrator that will accompany the viewer until the end of the film. Moreover, Mark Reeder will attend the screening of the film. Before the screening it will be also the performance of Daniele Celona, italian songwriter. The evening will continue with the opening party of Seeyousound to be held starting at 11:30 p.m. at the Cavallerizza- with which the festival has partnered. To animate the opening party will be an exclusive DJ set with two international guests of honor at the festival as a jury of the feature film category: the same Mark Reeder protagonist of the inaugural films and Philippe Cohen Solal (Gotan Project - from Paris)

The 40th Hong Kong International Film Festival presents the Berlinale winners

The 40th Hong Kong International Film Festival congratulates and presents Asian Premieres of the award-winning films of the Berlin International Film Festival 2016, including winner of the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize Death in Sarajevo, winner of Silver Bear Alfred Bauer Prize A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery and winner of Outstanding Artistic Contribution (Cinematography) Crosscurrent.

Director Danis TANOVIĆ won the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize with Death in Sarajevo, a witty look at the changes and problems of Europe today.  TANOVIĆ sets the whole film in one day in Hotel Europa, where the staff prepares for the 100th anniversary of an assassination in Sarajevo that started a war and changed Europe.

Winner of the Silver Bear Alfred Bauer Prize, Lav DIAZ has been fascinated by the promises and betrayals of Filipino history.  Masterfully intertwining major events and theatrical monologues with songs, poetry and folklore, the 8-hour A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery is a remarkably intimate historical epic for the Filipino nation.

Director YANG Chao's Crosscurrent, which won the Outstanding Artistic Contribution (Cinematography) award, is a story about a barge captain and failed poet GAO Chun's encounters with prostitute AN Xu at each port as he illegally transports cargo up the Yangtze River.  Shot expertly by Mark Ping-Bin LEE, this earthbound magical realist drama explores man's eternal quest for the unknown and unknowable.

HKIFF will also present Austrian director Händl KLAUS' Tomcat winner of the Teddy Award Best Feature Film. Both winners of the Ecumenical Prize are also included in this year's line-up, they are Barakah Meets Barakah by Mahmoud SABBAGH and Those Who Jump by Abou Bakar SIDIBÉ, Estephan WAGNER and Moritz SIEBERT.

For the Short Film Competition, the winner of Golden Bear for Best Short goes to Batrachian's Ballad by Leonor TELES, which will be featured in the Short Film Competition Programme III, whereas the Audi Short Film Award winner Anchorage Prohibited by CHIANG Wei-Liang will be featured in Short Film Competition Programme II.

The Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA) announced today its 2016 lineup of narrative and documentary features, short films, and galas for its 14th annual festival. Opening the festival on April 6th is the U.S. premiere of the ensemble powerhouse ANGRY INDIAN GODDESSES, from filmmaker and four-time IFFLA alum Pan Nalin. Anu Menon’s poignant WAITING, starring Naseeruddin Shah and Kalki Koechlin, closes the festival with its North American premiere on April 10th. Gala tickets and passes are now available at www.indianfilmfestival.org. Tickets for individual films will go on sale on March 18, 2016.

The festival is widely recognized as the premiere showcase of groundbreaking Indian cinema globally. IFFLA will run April 6-10 at ArcLight Hollywood in Los Angeles, the festival’s home since its inception.

"India's independent filmmakers are taking bold risks, defying convention, and responding to injustice in each of these visionary films, and the results are breathtaking,” said Mike Dougherty, Director of Programming. “I'm extremely excited for our Los Angeles audience to experience these films, which have garnered raves from around the world, or are making their world premiere with us."

Festival opener ANGRY INDIAN GODDESSES screened in the Special Presentations section of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, and takes a refreshingly uncensored look at the issues facing women in contemporary Indian society while celebrating the uniqueness, talents, and flaws of each of its female characters. This joyful yet powerful dramedy comes from 2014 IFFLA Audience Award winning director Pan Nalin (FAITH CONNECTIONS).

Anu Menon’s WAITING closes the festival with a poignant and stirring story that is as witty as it is heartrending. Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah and the incomparable Kalki Koechlin reunite for the first time since they starred together in THAT GIRL IN YELLOW BOOTS, giving beautiful performances as two strangers who develop a deep connection in the hospital while their spouses lie in comas.

Spice Affair will host the Opening and Closing Night Gala receptions in Beverly Hills.

This year the festival will feature three world premieres, including IFFLA alum Kranti Kanade’s CRD, two North American premieres, and ten U.S. premieres.

More features and shorts from female filmmakers will be presented this year by IFFLA than ever before, including Deepa Mehta’s gangster drama BEEBA BOYS; Leena Yadav’s PARCHED, a piercing examination of India’s patriarchal culture through the stories of four women; Ruchika Oberoi’s genre-bending triptych, ISLAND CITY; and Rinku Kalsy’s documentary FOR THE LOVE OF A MAN, about the fierce devotion shared by South-Indian superstar Rajinikanth’s fans.

IFFLA’s program is also notable this year for the number of award-winning titles it includes. UMRIKA received the Sundance World Cinema Dramatic Audience Award; ISLAND CITY took home the Best Young Director Award of the Venice Days section at the 2015 Venice Film Festival; MASAAN garnered both Cannes’ Un Certain Regard’s prestigious FIPRESCI prize and the Promising Future Award for director Neeraj GhaywanPARCHED won the Stockholm International Film Festival’s first-ever Impact Award; and OTTAAL was just awarded the Crystal Bear in the Generation Kplus section of the 2016 Berlin International Film Festival.

The festival also features two LGBT titles, Hansal Mehta’s politically-charged ALIGARH and the short DAARAVTHA (The Threshold) by Nishant Roy Bombarde, which are bold and compelling statements from filmmakers in a country where homosexuality is a criminal offense under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code.

Tamil cinema has recently emerged as a force on the world stage, and this is exemplified in the two engrossing Tamil features in the program: VISAARANAI (Interrogation) and KIRUMI (Virus).

Highlights in the shorts program include: the world premiere of MOCHI (THE COBBLER), an impressive directorial debut from Saqib Pandor, produced by Anurag Kashyap; the North American premiere of Anuj Gulati’s THE MANLIEST MAN, a boldly told, absurdist tale that reveals a visionary emerging director; and Payal Sethi’s gripping LEECHES, which tracks a woman’s dangerous journey to save her young sister from being sold as a One-Day Bride.

Attending the festival this year to present their films will be a host of celebrated filmmakers, including Bhaskar Hazarika (KOTHANODI), Kranti Kanade (CRD), Hansal Mehta (ALIGARH), Prashant Nair & Swati Shetty (UMRIKA), Pan Nalin (ANGRY INDIAN GODDESSES), Ruchika Oberoi (ISLAND CITY), Q (BRAHMAN NAMAN) and Leena Yadav (PARCHED).

IFFLA will also host stars from a number of films, including Kalki Koechlin (WAITING) and many of the actors featured in ANGRY INDIAN GODDESSES.

OPENING NIGHT GALA

ANGRY INDIAN GODDESSES
India/2015/115min/DCP/Hindi and English
U.S. Premiere
Director: Pan Nalin

Logline: When an eclectic group of women gathers to celebrate the impending nuptials of a close mutual friend, sparks fly as they each discover the power - and the fury - of the angry goddesses that lie within.

When a successful but frustrated photographer, a wannabe Bollywood actress, a high-flying workaholic executive and mother, a struggling musician, a prudish princess and a housekeeper with a dark secret all gather together in a quaint Portuguese villa in Goa on the eve of the host’s wedding, no subject is off limits for this spirited group of women. Love, sex, careers, marriage, friendship, sexism and the benefits of a super hot next-door neighbor are all up for debate. But it is ultimately tragedy and the power of unity in the face of institutional misogyny that binds these women together forever in this joyful yet powerful dramedy from 2014 IFFLA Audience Award winning director Pan Nalin (FAITH CONNECTIONS).

Screened in the Special Presentations section of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, ANGRY INDIAN GODDESSES takes a refreshingly uncensored look at the issues facing women in contemporary Indian society while celebrating the uniqueness, talents and flaws of each of its female characters.

CLOSING NIGHT GALA

WAITING
India/2015/92min/DCP/Hindi and English
North American Premiere
Director: Anu Menon

Logline: While their spouses lie in comas, two strangers develop a deep connection in the hospital to help support each other through the trials of waiting and grief.

Young, outspoken, and impassioned Tara Deshpande receives tragic news: Her husband of only six weeks has slipped into a coma after a car accident. Despondent and desperate for answers in a situation where she has little control, Tara finds an unlikely friend in Shiv, a gentle and hopeful man who has become a regular in the hospital where his wife has been in a coma for over 8 months. They can relate to each other deeply, both isolated from other support and waiting for an optimistic outcome. However, as each reaches an important crossroads in caring for their spouses, Tara and Shiv realize that their fear of change is holding them back from making necessary decisions.

Anu Menon’s WAITING is a poignant and stirring film that is as witty as it is heartrending. Reuniting for the first time since they starred together in THAT GIRL IN YELLOW BOOTS, veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah and the incomparable Kalki Koechlin give beautiful performances that bring Tara and Shiv’s charming connection to life. Exploring the universal and personal experiences of grief in an honest and powerful way, WAITING is a tender film that proves the importance of our bond as humans is sometimes through sorrow and uncertainty.

This year’s Sundance Film Festival heard non-stop buzz about director Q’s latest brazen cinematic provocation: a 1980s-set coming-of-age sex comedy. There’s much more on this film’s mind than young lust and sexual hijinks…but it does have plenty of that to spare!

Director: Ruchika Oberoi
Logline: Three stories set in the sprawling city of Mumbai reveal the absurd, bittersweet and heartbreaking ways three characters attempt to push back against society’s plans for them.

Oberoi brilliantly plays with genre as her film effortlessly shifts from absurdist comedy to escapist fantasy to realist drama (there’s even a tinge of science fiction). Though each character’s journey is markedly different, their goals are similar: to push back against the demands forced on them without any regard for their personal desires. Oberoi’s unique vision won the Best Young Director Award of the Venice Days section at the 2015 Venice Film Festival.

KIRUMI (Virus)
India/2015/99min/DCP/Tamil
U.S. Premiere
Director: Anucharan Murugaiyan

First-time director Anucharan Murugaiyan delivers a riveting, white-knuckle thriller from a script co-written with rising star and Tamil filmmaker M. Manikandan (director of 2015 IFFLA Audience Award winner THE CROW’S EGG). Their collaboration is a fine example of Tamil cinema's recent emergence as a force on the world stage, and a superb elevation of the crime genre into a stylish, sophisticated look at corruption from the inside.

KOTHANODI (The River of Fables)
India/2015/117min/DCP/Assamese
U.S. Premiere
Director: Bhaskar Hazarika
Logline: A darker side to motherhood is revealed in these Assamese folktales about four women’s strange and unsettling relationships with their children.

MASAAN (Fly Away Solo)
India, France/2015/109min/DCP/Hindi
Los Angeles Premiere

Its premiere in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section saw the film win the prestigious FIPRESCI prize, and the section’s jury honored Ghaywan with the Promising Future Award. The film’s release in India garnered rave reviews and is poised to make stars of its talented young cast, including Vicky Kaushal, Richa Chadda and Shweta Tripathi.

U.S. Premiere
Director: Jayaraj Rajasekharan Nair
Logline: When an orphan's kind grandfather falls ill, the young boy is confronted with the bleak fate of millions of children worldwide.

Winner of the Crystal Bear in the Generation Kplus section of the 2016 Berlin International Film Festival, OTTAAL is directed with patient mastery by director Jayaraj Rajasekharan Nair, and anchored by a heartbreaking performance from its young lead, Ashanth K. Sha.

PARCHED
India/UK/USA/2015/117min/DCP/Hindi
Los Angeles Premiere

Leena Yadav's drama premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, and went on to play the Stockholm International Film Festival, where it won the festival’s Impact Award. With vivid, lived-in performances and a script by Yadav that never simplifies what is a complex reality for many Indian women, PARCHED spotlights a harsh patriarchal culture and the women and girls who remain steadfast within it.

Los Angeles Premiere
Director: Prashant Nair (IFFLA alum)

Showcasing winning performances by Suraj Sharma (LIFE OF PI) and Tony Revolori (THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL), UMRIKA won the Sundance World Cinema Dramatic Audience Award along with other accolades at festivals around the world. With a moving mix of humor, piercing loss and sacrifice, writer-director and IFFLA alum Prashant Nair captures the power of stories about the faraway, mythical places that are never quite real, but we still risk everything to reach.

NARRATIVE

It Had To Be You - USA - (Director: Sasha Gordon)

Sonia is a quirky, neurotic jingle writer who's always dreamt of a big and exciting life. Surprised by a sudden proposal and subsequent ultimatum from her easy-going boyfriend, Chris, Sonia has to decide whether she'll join the ranks of her married friends or take a leap and pursue her fantasies. A whimsical romantic comedy that's raunchy and yet, gentle,

It Had to Be You explores the choices women face today while satirizing cultural expectations of gender and romance.

My Friend from the Park - Argentina/Uruguay - (Director: Ana Katz)

Liz is struggling to adjust to her new life as a mother. With her husband in a different country for work, Liz has left her job to stay at home and care for their baby, Nicanor. Making things worse is the judgmental nanny she has hired and a cliquey group of overly enthusiastic parents. Feeling lost and alone, Liz begins taking Nicanor to the neighborhood park, where she strikes up a friendship with the blunt, spontaneous Rosa. From a dine-and-dash adventure to sharing fears about motherhood, Liz feels an immediate, liberating bond with Rosa. That freedom soon turns into paranoia, however, as Liz begins to suspect Rosa's true intentions when she is sucked into Rosa's world of stolen cars, un- stable sisters, and shady pasts.

DOCUMENTARIES

The Anthropologist - USA - (Director: Seth Kramer, Daniel A. Miller, Jeremy Newberger)

At the core of The Anthropologist are the parallel stories of two women: Margaret Mead, who popularized cultural anthropology in America; and Susie Crate, an environmental anthropologist currently studying the impact of climate change. Uniquely revealed from their daughters' perspectives, Mead and Crate demonstrate a fascination with how societies are forced to negotiate the disruption of their traditional ways of life, whether through encounters with the outside world or the unprecedented change wrought by melting permafrost, receding glaciers, and rising tides.

The Babushkas of Chernobyl - Ukraine - (Director: Holly Morris, Anne Bogart)

In the radioactive Dead Zone surrounding Chernobyl's Reactor No. 4, a defiant community of women scratches out an existence on some of the most toxic land on Earth. They share this hauntingly beautiful but lethal landscape with an assortment of visitors-- scientists, soldiers, and even 'stalkers' -- young thrill-seekers who sneak in to pursue post-apocalyptic video game- inspired fantasies. Why the women chose to return after the disaster - defying the authorities and endangering their health - is a remarkable tale about the pull of home, the healing power of shaping one's destiny, and the subjective nature of risk.

The Bad Kids - USA - (Director: Keith Fulton, Lou Pepe)

Located in an impoverished Mojave Desert community, Black Rock Continuation High School is one of California's alternative schools for students at risk of dropping out. Every student here has fallen so far behind in credits that they have no hope of earning a diploma at a traditional high school. Black Rock is their last chance. The Bad Kids is an observational documentary that chronicles one extraordinary principal's mission to realize the potential of these students whom the system has deemed lost causes. Employing a verité approach during a year at the school, the film follows Principal Vonda Viland as she coaches three at-risk teens--a new father who can't support his family, a young woman grappling with sexual abuse, and an angry young man from an unstable home--through the traumas and obstacles that rob them of their spirit and threaten their goal of a high school diploma. But The Bad Kids is not just a story of one teacher making a difference. It is a look at a practical model for how public education can address and combat the crippling effects of poverty in the lives of other American schoolchildren. Parallel to her efforts with the three main characters, we also see Viland's philosophies in constant application: through the customs of the school, through her attentions to other teens and their crises, and through her tireless efforts to promote the school's mission both within the district and at the state level. The Bad Kids is not a story of triumph against all odds, because that isn't the reality of these students' lives or expectations. It is a story of taking achievable steps toward pride and security.

Cameraperson - USA - (Director: Kirsten Johnson)

What does it mean to film another person? How does it affect that person - and what does it do to the one who films? Kirsten Johnson is one of the most notable cinematographers working in documentary cinema today, having shot Citizenfour, Happy Valley, Fahrenheit 9/11, The Oath, The Invisible War, and dozens of other essential documentaries. With her visually radical memoir Cameraperson, Johnson presents an extraordinary and deeply poetic film of her own, drawing on the remarkable and varied footage that she has shot and reframing it in ways that illuminate moments and situations that have personally affected her. What emerges is an elegant meditation on the relationship between story-telling and the camera frame, as Johnson transforms scenes that have been presented in so many other directors' films as one reflection of truth into another kind of story - one about personal journey, craft, and direct human connection.

City of Gold - USA - (Director: Laura Gabbert)

In this richly penetrating documentary odyssey, Pulitzer Prize-winning food critic Jonathan Gold shows us a Los Angeles where ethnic cooking is a kaleidoscopic portal to the mysteries of an unwieldy city and the soul of America.

Eva Hesse - USA/Germany - (Director: Marcie Begleiter)

As the wild ride of the 1960's came to a close, Eva Hesse, a 34 year-old German-born American artist was cresting the wave of a swiftly rising career. One of the few women recognized as central to the New York art scene, she had over 20 group shows scheduled for 1970 in addition to being chosen for a cover article in ArtForum Magazine. Her work was finally receiving both the critical and commercial attention it deserved. When she died in May, 1970 from a brain tumor, the life of one of that decades' most passionate and brilliant artists was tragically cut short. As Jonathon Keats wrote in Art and Antiques Magazine "Yet the end of her life proved to be only the beginning of her career. The couple of solo gallery shows she hustled in the 11 years following her graduation from the Yale School of Art have since been eclipsed by multiple posthumous retrospectives at major museums from the Guggenheim to the Hirshhorn to the Tate." Her work is now held by many important museum collections including the Whitney, MoMA, the Hirschhorn, the Pompidou in Paris and London's Tate Modern.

Love Between The Covers - USA - (Director: Laurie Kahn)

Love stories are universal. Love stories are powerful. And so are the women who write them. For three years, the filmmakers follow the lives of five published romance authors and one unpublished newbie as they build their businesses, find and lose loved ones, cope with a tsunami of change in publishing, and earn a living doing what they love-while empowering others to do the same. Romance is the behemoth of the publishing industry; it outsells mystery, sci-fi, and fantasy combined. Yet no filmmaker has ever taken an honest look at the amazing global community that romance writers and readers have built. Until now.

Shoulder the Lion - USA - (Director: Erinnisse Rebisz, Patryk Rebisz)

Using stories of three artists who have lost a sense defining their art, this visual essay explores meaning of images, fragility of memories and desire for relevance in today's world. A  photographer, who is blind, questions the power of images in today's visually saturated culture. Forced to give up his dream of playing music due to his advancing hearing loss, musician must reinvent his future. A painter who lost half her brain in a boxing match searches for her place in life unsure of what she should be to the world. The film attempts to ask what it takes for someone to keep on going in times of uncertainty, and uses unique film form to produce the answers.

A Small Good Thing - USA - (Director: Pamela Tanner Boll)

For the longest time, we've been living as though the more we have -- the more money, the more goods -- the happier we'll be. Following six people in one community over a year, A Small Good Thing tells the stories of people moving away from a philosophy of 'more is better' toward a more holistic conception of well-being--one based on a close connection to their health, the natural world, and to the greater good.

Speed Sisters - USA - (Director: Amber Fares)

The Speed Sisters are the first all-woman race car driving team in the Middle East. Grabbing headlines and turning heads at improvised tracks across the West Bank, these five women have sped their way into the heart of the gritty, male-dominated Palestinian street car-racing scene. Weaving together their lives on and off the track Speed Sisters takes you on a surprising journey into the drive to go further and faster than anyone thought you could.

Trapped - USA - (Director: Dawn Porter)

Since 2010, 288 laws regulating abortion providers have been passed by state legislatures. In total, 44 states and the District of Columbia have measures subjecting abortion providers to legal restrictions not imposed on other medical professionals. Unable to comply with these far-reaching and medically unnecessary laws, clinics have taken their fight to the courts. As the U.S. Supreme Court decides in 2016 whether individual states may essentially outlaw abortion (Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt), Trapped follows clinic workers and lawyers who are on the front lines of the battle to keep abortion safe and legal for millions of American women.

Filmmaker Focus Panel

Please Join the Denver Film Society's Filmmaker Focus for an important discussion on gender equity in the entertainment industry. With high profile actresses like Jennifer Lawrence demanding equal pay, the conversation around diversity and the movie business has become louder and more urgent. For example: Of 347 films in the Director's Guild of America's inaugural Feature Film Diversity Report, 82.4 percent were by white male directors. Please join three amazing female filmmakers as they discuss their views on the gender divide in the industry and how women can work together to bridge that gap for the future.

The official opening program of the Holland Animation Film Festival (HAFF), the largest animation festival in the Netherlands, is announced. Out of the 450 films HAFF has selected nine short films for the opening night, including the surprising puppet animation and BAFTA winner Edmond from Dutch director Nina Gantz and the world premieres Before Love by Igor Kovalyov (RU) and Ticking Away by Michael Sewnarain (NL). The opening of HAFF 2016 will take place on Wednesday March 16 at the new cinema CineMec Utrecht “de Sterrenkijker" in Leidsche Rijn Centre. For the first time, this year the opening of the HAFF is also open to the public.

Gerben Schermer, directeur Holland Animation Film Festival:“Specially for the opening, we have made a selection from the festival offerings for our audience. We are proud that many filmmakers are present at the official opening. It promises to be a dazzling evening with world premieres, award-winning directors and award winning films."

Opening program
The opening program of HAFF 2016 consists of nine short films. A few highlights from the program: Edmond, the much debated graduation film from the Dutch Nina Gantz at the National Film and Television School and recent winner of the Special Jury Award at the Sundance Film Festival and a BAFTA, is a surprising puppet animation in which Edmond looks back on his life and his great loves. Also, the world premieres Before Love by Igor Kovalyov (RU) and Ticking Away by Michael Sewnarain (NL) will be screened. Before Love is an intriguing, melancholic reflection on loneliness and misunderstanding. Ticking Away is a masterly cartoon about a watchmaker who is offered a quirky watch for repair.

The other selected films in the opening program are Six Portraits of Clara Schumann (Stuart Pound, UK, 2015), Mirror (Chris Ware, USA, 2015), Chez Moi (My Home) (Phuong Mai Nguyen, FR, 2015), Little Girl(Steven Subotnick, USA, 2016), Velodrool (Sander Joon, Estonia, 2015) and If I Was God (Cordell Barker, Canada, 2015).

Prior to the screening of nine short films the Vakprijs for Dutch Animation will be awarded and the nominations for the Grand Prix for Dutch animation will be announced.

Festival will close with Creepy - announced at star-studded press conference

The Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (HKIFFS) revealed today the Opening Films of the 40th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF40), Chongqing Hot Pot, directed by China’s YANG Qing, and Trivisa, from the Hong Kong trio of Frank HUI, Vicky WONG and Jevons AU.  Chongqing Hot Pot will kick off HKIFF40 on 21 March 2016 with its World Premiere, while that same evening Trivisa will have its Asian Premiere.  The 15-day festival will close on 4 April 2016 with the Asian Premiere of Creepy, directed by Japanese filmmaker KUROSAWA Kiyoshi. The highly anticipated announcement was made at a press conference at The MOKO.

Chongqing Hot Pot is YANG Qing’s second feature film after One Night in Supermarket (2009), and continues to showcase his talents with plot twists and comic timing.  Chongqing Hot Pot is about three high school classmates who open a hot pot restaurant and find themselves in some wild and unexpected adventures after the business fails.  The cast includes CHEN Kun and BAI Baihe, two of China’s biggest stars.

Celebrated Hong Kong filmmaker Johnnie TO is the producer of Trivisa, passing on his cinematic style to three new talents.  Set before the handover of Hong Kong to China in 1997, the story is about three criminals planning to pull off a heist, with greed, hatred and bewilderment leading to their downfall. Each director follows one protagonist until their storylines ultimately intersect.

Closing Film Creepy is the latest thriller by KUROSAWA Kiyoshi.  The film stars leading man NISHIJIMA Hidetoshi as a former police detective who suspects that his neighbor may be involved in a six-year-old missing-person case.

With over 240 titles from 66 countries and regions, the lineup is as eclectic as ever, boasting 63 World, International and Asian Premieres.

Continuing with its previous successes in the Beautiful series, the festival will present Beautiful 2016, which is composed of four short films directed by China’s JIA Zhangke, Japan’s NAKATA Hideo, Taiwan’s Alec SU and Hong Kong’s Stanley KWAN.  The HKIFF will present the World Premiere of this omnibus production.

"In the Mood for Films – 25th Anniversary of Jet Tone Films" will present fifteen of the company’s productions during the festival, including two Jet Tone releases never before screened in Hong Kong, Eros: The Hand, a 60-minute version of WONG Kar Wai’s shorter film that was featured in the anthology Eros (2004), and The Grandmaster 3D, based on WONG’s North American version of his 2013 film, and a seminar with celebrated Hong Kong director WONG Kar Wai who founded Jet Tone Films in 1991.

Several world-renowned directors will visit Hong Kong for screenings of their films: Acclaimed Hungarian filmmaker Béla TARR, who will lead a master class following the screening of his film The Turin Horse (2011); Taiwan’s Master of Slow Cinema TSAI Ming-Liang (Afternoon, 2015); Japan’s prolific director SONO Sion (Shinjuku Swan, 2015; The Whispering Star, 2015; A Man’s Flower Road, 1986; and the short I am Sion Sono!!, 1984); Japan’s horror king KUROSAWA Kiyoshi (Creepy, 2016); and French-Canadian auteur Denis Côté (Boris Without Béatrice, 2016).

Awards Gala night will feature the Asian premiere of Crosscurrent by China’s YANG Chao, about a barge captain and failed poet who transports illegal cargo up the Yangtze River and encounters the same woman at each port.  Cinematographer Mark LEE Ping-Bin received the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution this month at the Berlin International Film Festival. The Gala Premiere will see Hong Kong populist director Herman YAU’s Nessun Dorma, a World Premiere.

South Korea takes the spotlight at this year’s festival, with four films in the Focus on Korean Cinema programme: KWON Oh-kwang’s debut feature, Collective Invention (2015), which perfectly combines bizarre humor with sharp social critique; the Asian Premiere of The Bacchus Lady (2016) by director E J-yong, about a 65-year-old woman who sells sexual favors to old men; IM Kwon-taek’s The Surrogate Woman (1987) starring KANG Soo-yeon, who captured the Best Actress award in Venice; and WOO Min-ho’s Inside Men (2015), a stylish thriller about corrupt politicians starring heartthrob LEE Byung-hun. The directors of each film will attend the screenings. Also, a seminar, “Training for a Global Industry” will bring together PARK Ki-yong, a leading filmmaker of the new Korean cinema, and Roger GARCIA, Executive Director of the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society, to discuss the challenges for film students in a rapidly changing and increasingly globalised industry.  The French Night highlights Jailbirds (2015) by Audrey ESTROUGO, which takes a hard look at the lives of women in prison, both their creation and the destruction society imposed upon them. French star Sophie MARCEAU will greet the audience in person.

The HKIFF continues to build its community outreach and audience development initiatives with “Community Screenings”.  The two free screenings are financially supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, and each screening will be accompanied by a guest speaker. Also, the festival’s Film+ section has selected 21 screenings and reserved a number of tickets for each public screening for free distribution to secondary and tertiary students, with generous financial support from Create Hong Kong. All films will be followed by post-screening discussions. In addition, the HKIFF will conduct feature screenings with audio description.  This is an opportunity for visually impaired film-goers to have a complete experience when following a film through sounds and dialogue.

A full list of HKIFF40 selections is available at www.hkiff.org.hk. HKIFF40 will be held from 21 March to 4 April 2016.  Tickets for the public can be booked online at www.hkiff.org.hk and all URBTIX outlets from 26 February.
