Berlin 66 opened rousingly on Thursday, February 11 with multiple screenings of the new Coen Bros. Hollywood send-up "Hail Caesar" and a turn away overflow press conference crowd for the Jury led by Meryl Streep which was an event in itself. Day one, one might say, was all about  Streep, the Coen Brothers and actor George Clooney in his best jesting form and looking great in a slick black leather jacket at the Hail Caesar press conference table.

First off, a few words about the film. Manohla Dargis, in her sparkling NY Times review hit the nail squarely on the head when she called the film an "off center comedy" ~ as off center (flip-floppily structured) as it gets with chuckles and belly laughs all the way. To put it mildly, this in not the Co' Brothers most serious film, but it is arguably their funniest ever with a string of brilliant off-beat pearls by actors all of whom shine in their unexpected off-the-wall castings.  Basically this is a spoof of fifties Hollywood but much more than that, loaded with absurd humor of the kind that almost harks back  the Marx Brothers era.

One at a time:

Jeff Brolin, tremendous as the blustering bigger than life studio head draped in a double breasted suit and topped with a bulky fedora, who regularly unloads his guilt in the catholic confessional box;

Clooney as a clueless movie star who gets kidnapped by the Communists  and walks around through the whole picture clad in his clanky starring role Julius Caesar paraphernalia, down to leather sandals with protruding toes;

Scarlet Johansson as a snarling sinful take on Fifties simon-pure superstar bathing beauty, Ester Williams!;

Channing Tatum leading a bunch of sailors in white in a sly slightly homoerotic take on a Gene Kelly MGM dance number -- to me, the highlight of the picture with surprisingly adept tap dancing, jumping from table to table -- this section had me stomping along to the beat in my seat --

New face Alden Ehrenreich as an hilarilious acrobatic Roy Rogers ripoff whistling to his white horse then doing handstands in the saddle pursued by the bad guys -- and performing incredible rope magic, even with a strand of  spaghetti in a restaurant for his girlriend --but  this is only Half of cowboy star "Hobie Doyle's comedic turn -- he is next engaged to fill in for an ailing actor in a drawing room drama exchanging ten gallon cowboy headgear for a tux and Bow tie, and called upon to mouth a bit of sophisticated dialogue which is like a foreign tongue to him -- the extended scene where his English director (Ralph Fiennes) patiently re-shoots his flubbed entry scene over and over painfully correcting  the perplexed actor's stumbling delivery of his single line -- (t'were as though...) -- is a real rib tickler.

Another highlight  in this linkup of comical skits strung together by the ridiculous premise of Caesar discovering God on his knees at the foot of Jesus on the cross --the whole "Hail Caesar" business being a kind of takeoff  on early fifties religious extravaganzas such as "The Robe" -- A satire of all-powerful Hollywood Gossip columnists who could make or break careers -- such as Louella Parsons and Hedda Hopper, both played sniffingly by Tilda Swinton --- All in all a hilarious piece of extra savvy entertainment and a glorious procession of contemporary stars revealing unexpected comedic chops --

Well, okay, it did get to be a bit much by the end, but a very good time was had by me -- if not by All -- of the serious minded film critics and international press people around me.

As far as I could tell from my front and center first row seat,  I was the only one in the entire audience to burst out laughing or constantly snickering throughout the proceedings. I'll just hafta see it again with a native American audience to appreciate the collective cackle noticeably absent at this ultra-sober festival screening.

The crammed over flow press conference after the screening was almost equally comical. One Polish gal addressed a long long long question to Gorgeous George, who finally replied: "Are you flirting with me? ~ it won't work because I'm a married man now!" ~  which brought a roar of glee from the house. Most questions were, in fact, addressed to Clooney, who between sly quips that brought smiles from his colleagues at the table, finally summed it all up by saying that it was a privilege to work with such talented directors as the Coens, and above all -- FUN all the way.

On the serious side one woman expressed the view that with the refugee crisis now besetting Europe, shouldn't  people "in the  public eye", such as the Coen Brothers, be making films on that subject?  Josh Coen responded with due respect, but firmly, that it is not the job of filmmakers to engage in politics but rather to be true to their art ~ and that is hard enough.

As for the other big event of the day, the jury press conference was basically orchestrated by Jury president Meryl Streep looking demurely majestic at center table. She noted that this was her very first time ever to sit on a film jury, let alone as president, and that she was very much looking forward to this new experience. Questioned as to the lack of empowerment of women in the film  industry she pointed out that this jury was predominantly female -- four women out of a team of seven. Clive Owen sitting next her was asked if, as an actor, he would be paying more attention to the acting than anything else in making his judgements. To this his reply was "No"--what counts for him is the overall effect of the picture, not just the acting. English film critic Nick James of the prestigious film journal Sight and Sound observed that it is quite a rare thing for a critic to be seated on a jury such as this, and felt honored to be so chosen. A chinese woman asked Ms. streep if, having acted recently alongside a major Chinese actor, she has started seeing more Chinese cinema. Not really, said the American actress -- "I can't even keep up with all the films friends of mine are in!" -- La Streep obviously has many friends in the business.

Tonight -- the big opening night Red Carpet Gala with every Berlin celebrity who is anybody expected to turn out --but, having already seen the opening film "Hail Caesar", I'll probably take  a rain chekk on that and rest up for the onslaught of films and events in the week ahead.

Ps: At the Polish stand on a quick tour of the European Film Market, EFM, in the classic Gropius Building, I found out that Polish Grand Master Andrzej Wajda has just finished a new film "Afterimages", which will open in Warsaw on March 5, the director's Ninetieth birthday -- Long live the king!

New York Wild Film Festival 2016 3rd edition wrapped

From January 28 -31 New York’s renowned Explorers Club presented the third edition of the New York Wild Film Festival. It was established by its executive director Nancy Rosenthal as the first documentary festival in the New York metropolitan area devoted exclusively to environmental and wildlife productions with the mission of exploring, discovering and protecting global nature and its wildlife.  Through effective storytelling and superb cinematography in most productions selected the festival creates a viable platform for new perspectives and discussions with the educated Audience it attracts in the intimacy of the club. More than 200 productions were submitted from 25 countries and 17 selected for the program by area and film professionals. Over three and a half days films were screened back to back with frequent introductions, Q& A sessions and some breaks. All programs were sold out reaching more than 200 people  in its small 2nd floor auditorium.  Awards in nine categories were provided. Similar to last year’s program the productions I could view were characterized by creativity, original presentations and high production value which may be linked to the funding basis of the films. Unlike other film festivals with their emphasis on action, entertainment, and docudramas the Wild Film Festival provided a learning experience with reflexive challenges and innovative insights, in short it is the critical and issue oriented individual’s film festival. The festival was sponsored by the Explorers Club, Miami University’s exploration science program, National Geographic , the New Yorker, and numerous in kind supporters.

SOUL OF THE ELEPHANT by Dereck and Beverly Joubert (USA,2015) the best Wildlife film, is the reconstruction of the life of two old bull elephants who died aged 70 with complete tusks of natural causes in Botswana. Travelling on skiffs along a river the Joubert provided unparalleled  documentation of the long tracks of elephants in search of food and water with a strong emphasis on their social life and protective interaction. Images of nurturing and raising their young are startling as are the elephants’ soulful encounters on their well-traveled path with the remainder of deceased elephants which they morn and explore. Deferring silently to the movements of the animals the Jouberts  capture compelling close up images of the elephants and their interaction. In Botswana one third of the Earth global elephant population still roams in areas protected by the government as distinct from  Tanzania and Zimbabwe and other regions where an estimated 30,000 elephants are killed in the lucrative  criminal ivory trade.

This issue is squarely addressed in the award-winning conservation film WARLORDS OF IVORY by producers Katie Carpenter, John Hemingway and JJ Kelley (USA, 2015).  This film follows the investigative reporting by Bryan Christy who tracks the trade of tusks in Africa from the initial poaching. The trail was leading from Congo’s Garamba National Park north to the Sudan, rather than going east to eventually reach the Asian destination as Singleton expected. His unique approach was the insertion of a GPS tracking device in a carefully constructed fake elephant tusk which allowed monitoring the passage of the tusk after he left it with an anonymous dealer.  His research revealed a clear link between the ivory trade and terrorism. As distinct from Botswana the violent and conflict beset areas of the Congolese Garamba Park offered little protection for elephants which were sometimes shot using helicopters but more often from the ground. Singleton’s investigation revealed extensive official corruption but more importantly the active role played by The Lord’s Resistance Army. Young members are ordered to kill the elephants, remove the tusks to carry them through the jungle all the way to an enclave bordering the Central African Republic and South Sudan where apparently the some of the LRS is located with its leader  Joseph Kony.    There the tusks are sold or traded to the Sudanese army in exchange for arms. The tracking device stopped sending signals after the fake task arrived in the Bashir area.  The Garamba National Park’s elephant population declined in 2015 by 10% and given the instability of that Congolese Area, growing activity of the LRA and widespread corruption the conditions may turn worse.  The documentary succeeds in showing a clear link between wildlife trade, terrorism and security. Only a decline in the Asian ivory market, as possibly indicated by initiatives of the Chinese government may reduce the slaughters of African elephants.

The French-German production consortium Arte sponsored LICENSE TO KILL by David Singleton (UK,2015) which was selected as the best exploration film, largely facilitated by the provision of an icebreaking research ship by the German Alfred Wegner  Institute. License to Krill excels through its research based approach, outstanding photography and including amazing never seen before deep underwater images.. Most impressive it engages the audience in an analysis of the consequences of climate change in a little known crucial sector, the massive decline of Krill estimated to range between 50-90% of the total population. Krill are tiny two inch shrimp creatures and a crucial part of the food chain feeding on plankton and providing in turn food for larger animals like squid, seals, penguins and whales. Krill provides most of their diet and without krill the majority of Antarctic life forms would vanish. Consisting of marine scientists from different specializations, the expedition objective was the exploration of the dramatic decline of the krill population. Data driven the research revealed that there are no direct human causes such as krill fishing, but that the decline seemed to be driven by context specific larger factors, such as changes of the eco-climate system with an emerging focus on the decline of the west Antarctic ice cover that serves as a breeding ground for krill. That region is the fastest winter warming space on earth and experienced over the last 50 years a temperature increase of 7 Celsius. The sea ice holding the essential single cell plankton melts earlier and freezes later, and the later it freezes the less biomass there is for the krill. Since the internal clock of the krill is tied to daylight and not to climate change they are misled in their search for food and their decline threatens the whole life eco system of Antarctica. The first evidence is the apparent demise of the Andalie penguins.

Midnight Special - Press Conference

by Martin I. Petrov

Midnight special by US director Jeff Nichols, one of the most highly anticipated premieres at the 66th Berlinale Competition tells the story of a father (Michael Shannon) who begins a journey with his eight year old son, convinced that his special powers are of great importance to humanity.

Jeff Nichols, whose previous films Mud and Takeshelter put the dircetor in the spotlight of the film festival circuit, returns to Berlin after his 2007 debut in the Forum section, with Midnight Special competing for the prestigious Golden Bear.

The cast of the film, with Michael Shannon, Kirsten Dunst, Joel Edgerton and young Jaeden Liberher presented the film at the official press conference before the world premier last night.

Commenting on his inspiration for the film, Nichols said: "My son was 8 years ofd when I was writing the film. He got sick and we had to go to the hospital. This made me realise that I have not control over many things, I got scared. Midnight special is a way to process this fear." Also, films like E.T. and Starman were among the titles that had always been favourites for the American director, since his early childhood and have definitely had an impact on his filmmaking.

Both Kirsten Dunst and Jaeden Liberher spoke about Nichols' ability to create an atmosphere on set, making it much easier even for his less experienced actors to deliver what he expects in every scene.

The director follows a similar technique of storytelling that he adopted in previous films, especially Take Shelter that resembles a lot the atmosphere and pace of Midnight Special. "Midnight special is an experiment. I followed a technique of removing scenes and information till the entire story sounded and looked better. For character whose background moved the story forward, I've, of course, kept the explanations."

Little Men by Ira Sachs: Review and Q&A

by Martin I. Petrov

Original Title: Little Men (2016)
Director: Ira Sachs
With: Greg Kinnear, Theo Taplitz, Michael Barbieri, Paulina Garcia

New York based director Ira Sachs returns to Berlin two years after Love is Strange with a coming of age story about friendship and the struggle of embracing adulthood.

Little Men is an everyday story about two fourteen year old boys, Jake and Toni, who meet when the first moves with his family to a fast-developing Brooklyn neighbourhood. From the first moment it becomes prominent that the two boys are very different in character, with Jake being shy, creative and more intellectual, aspiring to become an artist, whereas Toni is a free spirit, less precise in his choices, and yet the greatest support for his single mother.

But is is exactly these differences that seem to be bringing together the two boys who soon become inseparable, learning from each other’s dreams, experiences and the challenges of adolescence.

Ira Sachs works out magnificently a way to transform another ordinary story to a powerful and emotional journey that manoeuvres from a light-hearted teenage drama to an extremely sophisticated zoom-in on family, relationships and adulthood. In Keep the lights on he focused on the relationship between two young men and in Love is strange he depicted the tender love story of an elderly gay couple in NYC. Going backwards, Little men explores the grounds of teenagehood relationships, while revising their newest guidelines and boundaries.

In the world of 2016, where nothing is forbidden and the norms are shifting to new directions, and  in a city where opportunities are unlimited, Sachs is determined to show that childhood can still be innocent and life - surprising. And perhaps, although the way we form relationships still obeys to old-school rules, it is much easier to let go and forget.

To that extend, the two families serve the story with their background interaction that will also become a resolution and a catalyst. When Toni’s mother is threatened by eviction from her shop, now belonging to Jake’s family, the two boys are forced to encounter adulthood for the first time and to take decisions that are beyond their reach.

With young Theo Taplitz and Michael Barbieri taking the lead, Ira Sachs proves again his ability to make his characters being so important on their own, each sharing a personal story within the whole, and at the same time clicking together in a completely natural way. Simple reactions from the lead characters - the refusal to talk to the parents as a statement of protest, the fascination with discovering the life sooner than their age would allow - become significant parts of their self-discovery.

The two little men turn against the currentas a part of their attempt to find who they really are and where they belong. No matter what the result, the broader picture is telling of the ever-changing challenge of becoming an adult and what Ira Sachs has learned is that the journey is definitely more important, even if you have to start all over at the end of it.

—————

Director Ira Sachs presented his film to the audience in Berlin and spoke about his two sons, who inspired the characters in Little Men. “It is exciting that they are now older and we can finally take them to the cinema.”, he admitted speaking about his family.

On my question about the desire of children to be adults at an earlier stage in their life and how difficult it is to prevent this in the world of today, he replied: “Sometimes they really have to act as an adult. Other times, they are just kids. But what I think is that actually today, no matter what age we are, we are constantly on the verge of becoming somebody else.”

The director was fascinated to make another film in NYC, and although it is always very difficult“we managed to create a calm atmosphere in such a chaotic place. I am proud to have worked with a great team once again.”

Maggie's Plan: Press Conference

by Martin I. Petrov

Maggie’s Plan, Rebecca Miller’s new dramatic comedy starring Julianne Moore, Greta Gerwig and Ethan Hawke received its European premiere at the 66th Berlinale Panorama section yesterday evening at the Friedrichstadt Palast Theatre.

The film is a contemporary story, following young Maggie who leaves and works in NYC. She is convinced that at the approach of her thirties, she wants to have a child and is seeking a sperm donor. But after she bumps into one of her colleagues, who happens to be looking for new friendships, Maggie’s life plan changes overnight.

An overwhelming and fresh romantic comedy, with a hot contemporary topic, Maggie’s Plan deals with new family forms, societal recognition and challenges for both women and men with the background of a huge cosmopolis. It is a nicely told story about life, relationships and the ability to stand behind your choices, when everything and everyone is pointing to the opposite direction.

Actresses Julianne Moore and Greta Gerwig, along with director Rebecca Miller, attended the Berlinale to present their film.

At the official press conference, Julianne spoke about the role of Georgette, the powerful independent and career-minded wife of Ethan Hawke, calling it “challenging, but also thrilling”. Having to go through a divorce in the film, she remembered a personal story: “I've been with my husband for 20 years, so it’s difficult to imagine how it is to go through a separation. Of course we all have our ups and downs but in the end it’s always been good. I recently spoke to a person who went through a divorce and they told me they wouldn't go through marriage again. So I think I understand Georgette, she appears to be a funny person and not a monster after all.”

Greta Gerwig also commented on her part as Maggie, saying that Rebecca guided her very well through everything. “We had long talks and we built the character together. All the lines were so good and speaking for themselves so I just needed to find a way to express them, speak them out loud.”

After getting off to a brilliant start with the opening film Hail, Caesar! - with directors Joel & Ethan Coen as well as actors George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, Josh Brolin, Channing Tatum and Alden Ehrenreich in attendance – the spectacular list of stars continues: Pernilla August, Susanne Bier, Daniel Brühl, Daniel Burman, Isabel Coixet, Doris Dörrie, Kirsten Dunst, Colin Firth, Greta Gerwig, Brendan Gleeson, Isabelle Huppert, Julia Jentsch, Denis Lavant, Jude Law, Spike Lee, Laura Linney, Julianne Moore, Cynthia Nixon, Guy Pearce, Michael Peña, Tim Robbins, Gianfranco Rosi, James Schamus, Michael Shannon, Alexander Skarsgård, André Téchiné, Emma Thompson, Wayne Wang, and many more, have all put in appearances during the first half of this year’s Berlinale.

There were standing ovations for Jury President Meryl Streep who - with her co-jurors Lars Eidinger, Nick James, Brigitte Lacombe, Clive Owen, Alba Rohrwacher and Małgorzata Szumowska - will award the Berlinale’s main prizes on February 20.

And so far the turnout of visitors at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival has been tremendous. At half time, almost 250,000 tickets have been sold.

“Once more the Berlinale is proving to be a huge crowd-puller. We are very pleased that thousands of people from Berlin and around the globe have again joined us to take a cinematic voyage of discovery,” says Festival Director Dieter Kosslick.

The Berlinale’s European Film Market (EFM) is also heading for success in 2016. This international platform for trading in film rights and audio-visual content has again registered a rising number of visitors and exhibitors.

But connections are being made and synergies they are there ofcourse but the landscape is something. I take a walk around the EFM and the Marriott. The lobby cafe is full.  People are having meetings and making deals of course. Promises to follow up. They talk longer, than usual and more focussed. Oh there it is. What? The Elephant....

Kollektivet | Video Highlights Press Conference | Berlinale 2016

After Submarino, which screened in Competition at the Berlinale in 2010, Thomas Vinterberg returns to Berlin with Kollektivet (The Commune). Loosely based on his own childhood experiences, the director depicts a private experiment from the 1970s in which community and individuality, freedom and tradition and the promise of happiness also harbour dangers.

Erik, a lecturer in architecture, inherits his father’s large old house in Hellerup, north of Copenhagen. His wife Anna, a well-known television newscaster, suggests that they invite their friends to come and live with them. In this way she hopes to evade the boredom that has begun to seep into their marriage. Before long, a dozen women, men and children move into the country house, make collective decisions, engage in discussions and go swimming together in the nearby Øresund strait. They also rub each other up the wrong way on account of their smaller and larger idiosyncrasies. Their fragile equilibrium threatens to come undone when Erik falls in love with his student Emma and the young woman moves into the house. Fourteen-year-old Freja, daughter of Erik and Anna, aloofly observes these goings-on and seeks her own way. Press Conference KOLLEKTIVET (The Commune) by Thomas Vinterberg at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival.  Denmark / Sweden / Netherlands 2015, 111 min Danish by Thomas Vinterberg with Trine Dyrholm Ulrich Thomsen Helene Reingaard Neumann Martha Sofie Wallstrøm Hansen Lars Ranthe Erik, a lecturer in architecture, inherits his father’s large old house in Hellerup, north of Copenhagen. Michael Ballhaus | Video Q&A Press Conference | Berlinale 2016

Ballhaus is one of the world’s most important cinematographers. Before spending 25 years working primarily in the USA, he established his reputation in Germany where he worked with, among others, auteur Rainer Werner Fassbinder, helping “Young German Cinema” achieve new artistic freedom. At the lens alongside great American directors such as Martin Scorsese, he had a decisive effect on the lighting and look of US moviemaking.

“We are honouring Michael Ballhaus as a director of photography who was a kindred talent to directors and whose oeuvre is unique,” says Berlinale Director Dieter Kosslick. That body of work comprises some 130 films for theatres and television, including 15 films with Fassbinder and seven with Scorsese alone, alongside many other legendary directors, including Peter Lilienthal, Wolfgang Petersen, Volker Schlöndorff, John Sayles, Robert Redford, James L. Brooks, Paul Newman, Mike Nichols, and Francis Ford Coppola.

Michael Ballhaus began as a still photographer and cameraman in television. He had already been Fassbinder’s director of photography three times before taking his place at the eyepiece on Martha(West Germany 1974), a psycho-drama about a sado-masochistic marriage. During the shoot, Fassbinder and Ballhaus discussed how to film the first meeting of the future couple as a magical moment. Ballhaus suggested a semi-circular travelling shot due to the uneven ground at the location. Fassbinder countered with a challenge to have the camera make a full circuit of the pair. The resulting 360-degree dolly shot drew audiences into the scene’s emotional intensity and was to become a Ballhaus trademark. But the cinematographer’s intent and his genius is the way he comes up with visual language to suit each individual director and film. ...

United States of Love: Press Conference Highlights

$

by Martin I. Petrov

UnitedStatesofLove is Tomasz Wasilewski's third feature film, premiering today at the Berlinale Competition. It tells the story of four women in post-communist Poland in early 1990. A dark and simultaneously humorous insight in the lives of female figures and their fights for love.

At the press conference, held early this morning, Wasilewski and the cast presented the film at the last day of competition screenings at the Berlinale.

Julia Kijowska, playing one of the four women, Agata, explained that Tomasz had a very specific idea about her part and her appearance since the very beginning, "we had to change the way my face looked like, my hair, everything, it was exciting and so strange at the same time. Later on, on a question about the political context of the film, she responded: "It's a metaphor for communism. The four characters are trapped like birds in a cage. In the beginning they fight but eventually they decide to sit patiently in the corner awaitng a release."

Magdalena Cielecka, playing Iza, pointed out how challenging it was to engage with the character. "When Tomasz told me he thought of me when writing the character, I got scared that I might not be able to pull it out - we have all worked in theatre for many years and this was a big challenge."

Wasilewski spoke about his childhood growing up mainly surrounded by women - his mother, sister and friends - which inspired him to write these four characters. Religion, which becomes a strong symbol in United States of Love, was also part of his early years, he recalls: "We used to go to the church every Sunday as the characters do in the film. It was part of the tradition and the quite conservative catholic society I grew up in."

The Berlinale and the European Film Market can look back at a successful edition of the festival.

There was no shortage of highlights at the 2016 Berlinale. First up was a glamorous kick-off with the opening film Hail, Caesar! attended by directors Joel and Ethan Coen, along with stars George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, Josh Brolin, Channing Tatum and Alden Ehrenreich. That was followed by the gala premieres of film greats and, not least of all, the award of an Honorary Golden Bear for his life’s work to legendary German cinematographer Michael Ballhaus.

There were standing ovations for jury president Meryl Streep who - with jurors Lars Eidinger, Nick James, Brigitte Lacombe, Clive Owen, Alba Rohrwacher and Małgorzata Szumowska - will award the Berlinale’s main prizes.

Star guests on this year’s red carpet included Pernilla August, Susanne Bier, Daniel Brühl, Daniel Burman, Nick Cannon, Don Cheadle, Isabel Coixet, John Cusack, Gérard Depardieu, Doris Dörrie, Kirsten Dunst, Trine Dyrholm, Colin Firth, Greta Gerwig, Alex Gibney, Brendan Gleeson, Tom Hiddleston, Isabelle Huppert, Julia Jentsch, Nick Jonas, Hugh Laurie, Denis Lavant, Jude Law, Spike Lee, Laura Linney, Dominik Moll, Julianne Moore, Cynthia Nixon, Guy Pearce, Michael Peña, Tim Robbins, Gianfranco Rosi, James Schamus, Michael Shannon, Alexander Skarsgård, André Téchiné, Emma Thompson, Thomas Vinterberg, Wayne Wang and many more.

This year, the Berlinale could look proudly on a host of activities aimed at refugees. In cooperation with the BBZ Beratungs- und Betreuungszentrum für junge Flüchtlinge und Migranten (support centre for young refugees and migrants), 18 refugees had the opportunity to visit and observe various areas behind the scenes in the festival offices. With the participation of 953 people, the “sponsored cinema visit” project organised with Berlin’s non-profit refugee aid organisations was also a success. And for the first time in Berlinale history, the festival specifically urged visitors to make a donation, with 25,000 euros collected so far.

And the Berlinale once again lived up to its reputation as the largest audience festivals around. As of yesterday evening (Thursday, Feb 18), visitors to the Berlinale had bought 310,000 tickets.

Sunday, February 21, 2016 is Berlinale Publikumstag, another special treat for the public. Many of the festival films from various sections will be screened again at Berlinale venues.

The third year of the Berlinale Open House and Berlinale Lounge Nights at the Audi Berlinale Lounge drew crowds as well. About 7,200 visitors attended the 30 events.

The European Film Market was another success of the 66th Berlin International Film Festival. There was a notable increase over last year in the number of participants – in both the market and the individual initiatives – for the international trade fair at the Berlinale, which was held at the Martin Gropius Bau and the new Gropius Park, along with the Marriott Hotel. Exhibitors and buyers enjoyed great interest, a lively exchange and plenty of deal-making. There was also an extremely good response to the new platforms “Drama Series Days”, “EFM Startups”, “EFM Asia” and the “EFMProducers Hub”. Altogether, this year’s EFM marked a good start to the year, providing strong momentum for the industry.

With the Award Ceremony at 7 pm on Saturday, Feb 20, the 66th Berlin International Film Festival draws to a spectacular close. The winners of the Golden and Silver Bears and the Audi Short Film Award, as well as the Best First Feature Award will be announced at the festive gala. Directly after the ceremony there will be a screening of a winning film.
