The South Asian International Film Festival (SAIFF) is the largest film premiere destination for South Asian/Indian filmmakers in the United States. SAIFF was founded in New York City due to the lack of support for many emerging filmmakers and the overall underrepresentation of Indian cinema in a capital that is recognized by the world as the birthplace of independent filmmaking! The Festival is committed to exhibiting films from South Asia (i.e India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal) and within the Indian Diaspora. With a focus on dynamic, visionary cinema, SAIFF annually creates unprecedented exposure for filmmakers and unparalleled experiences for its attendees. The 14th Annual South Asian International Film Festival will take place from December 13-17, 2017.

The South Asian International Film Festival (SAIFF) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting South Asian/Indian filmmakers in the U.S seeking maximum visibility and absolute distribution.

The Jewish International Film Festival has announced two brand new films, the fascinating documentaries Sammy Davis Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me and A Land Without Borders which will screen alongside 29 repeat screenings of festival favourites as part of the Festival’s Encore sessions.

The screenings will take place across Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane from 23 – 29 November, including sessions at brand new Melbourne venue Cameo Cinemas, Belgrave, for the very first time.

Sammy Davis Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me is a star-studded look into the life of iconic American entertainer Sammy Davis Jr. Directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Sam Pollard (4 Little Girls), the film features interviews with pop culture luminaries including Billy Crystal, Jerry Lewis and Whoopi Goldberg.

A Land Without Borders is a captivating documentary delving into solutions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Featuring conversations with local populations throughout the West Bank, the film follows award-winning writer Nir Baram as he is forced to challenge his entire political belief system.

These additions to the program will show alongside last-chance sessions of the Festival’s most loved films, from winner of Best Documentary at the Ophir Awards Ben-Gurion, Epilogue to Best Feature winner at Tribeca Film Festival, Keep the Change, winner, and plenty more.

“The Festival may wrap up for another year on 22 November, but our Encore sessions are a great chance for audiences to enjoy some of their favourite stories one last time, or catch films they may have missed. The Capon

This marvelous bird is a result of too much government control! Back in Ancient Roman times, the Roman Senate was concerned about the people having too many feasts and having too good a time. So, they outlawed fatted Chickens! A very clever Surgeon managed to 'de-sex' the Rooster, resulting in a super fat, tender and delicious "Capon" - The "Soprano Chicken" that is far more tender and tasty than a regular chicken or a turkey. Plus the Capon is a lot smaller, which helps! So the people got around the Senate ban of Chickens for their feasts, only to create something better - The Capon. A good final result from government meddling!

The Smithfield Ham

The traditional slow cured Smithfield Ham is always part of our holidays at the Todd House. Back in the 1700's, one of my ancestors, Capt Mallory Todd traded goods from Virginia to the Caribbean Islands. The ham industry in Smithfield goes back to Colonial Times when Capt. Mallory Todd, a merchantman from Bermuda, set up shop in town and began exporting hams as early as 1779. Capt. Todd is credited with the creation of the Smithfield ham with his distinct salt and smoke cured country hams. In exchange for Todds Old Virginia Hams, he brought in fine Rum and other Caribbean products. Todd's business was very successful and his first packing house was built in 1880. It is now the Smithfield Company, a Fortune 200, built on Hams!

The 71st Festival de Cannes will take place from Tuesday, 8th May to Saturday, 19th May 2018. It will start one day earlier than in previous years, but will run for exactly the same length of time.

The opening will therefore take place on the evening of Tuesday, 8th May and the awards ceremony will be on Saturday, 19th May.

"Following 2017’s anniversary edition, the Festival is beginning a new period in its history," says Festival President Pierre Lescure. "We intend to renew the principles of our organisation as much as possible, while continuing to question the cinema of our age and to be present through its upheavals."

This new schedule will allow us to rebalance the two weeks of the event and to bring new energy to the proceedings.

What is more, starting on a Tuesday will allow us to hold an additional gala evening before the Festival weekend and to organise previews of the opening film throughout France.

Finally, bringing forward the announcement of awards by one day, to Saturday evening, will increase its prestige, while at the same time giving the closing film better exposure.

"To Be or Not To Be", Lubitsch, 1942. by Alex Deleon This film came out at the height of German conquest in Europe when it looked like Germany under Hitler was well on the way to winning the war and conquering the world. It was a very dark comedy designed to buck up people's spirits at a very dark time by poking fun at the Hitler regime and showing that they were not as invincible as they seemed to be. (In a far different vein than Chaplin's Great Dictator tw...

LIVING IN THE FUTURES PAST by Susan Kucera, A documentary presented by Jeff Bridges.
USA October 2017 - 83 minutes

Academy Award Winner, Jeff Bridges presents this beautifully photographed tour de force of original thinking on who we are and the environmental challenges we face. Jeff, alongside prominent scientists and authors, weave evolution, emergence, entropy, dark ecology, and what some are calling the end of nature, into a story that helps us understand our place among the species of Earth’s household. The film upends our way of thinking and provides original insights into our subconscious motivations, the unintended consequences, what to do about our fossil slaves, and how our fundamental animal nature influences our future as Humankind.

HOW ONE MAN'S DEATH, CHANGED HISTORY

An expose of the last King of Iran’s medical story

On January 16,1979, the Shah of Iran Mohamad Reza Pahlavi, left the royal palace, the Peacock Throne and his beloved country Iran for the last time, commencing what became a 19-month odyssey into exile. He wondered hopelessly from Egypt to Morocco, Bahamas, Mexico, the U.S, then Panama and back again to Egypt where he died furtively at the age of 60. His death had profound consequences for the future of the Middle East and the world, yet the untold medical story of the last King of Iran has to date remained a puzzling mystery. By unraveling the secrecy surrounding this critical period of history, beginning from the onset of the Shah’s illness, to the diagnosis/misdiagnosis and maltreatment, “A Dying King” exposes the main causes of the Iranian Revolution, the pursuant 444 days hostage crisis, and the adversarial relations between the U.S and Iran.

Regular Crisis - Multimedia Cantata on Global Economy

8a.jpg

This multimedia project by the video and performance artist Marina Landia combines video projections with Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by the renowned Estonian-born conductor and pianist Kristjan Järvi.

The video material has been compiled from interviews with key figures in global industry and finance: José Ángel Gurría, the Secretary-General of the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Manfred Bischoff, the Chairman of the Council of the German automobile manufacturer Daimler, as well as the business media manager Steve Forbes.

Regular Crisis reflects the ‘mental state’ of the most influential figures in the global economy, studying their values, philosophies and ways of thinking. Tensions skilfully conveyed with live music will create amazing effects, offering a rather unusual perspective on the current state and potential future of the global economy.

The concert will begin with a panel discussion of outstanding visionaries from Estonia and elsewhere, sharing their thoughts on the international economy.

The event is organised by Estonian National Sympony Orchestra and PÖFF | Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival.

Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival launches new initiative to boost creative industries

This year sees the launch of Creative Gate - a platform designed to increase the visibility of the Estonian creative sector and help it explore new opportunities for growth and export.

A number of Estonian organisations in the field of film, culture, fashion, art and education have joined to create Creative Gate, whose main focus will be companies and professionals in production/post-production, film music, costume design, art direction, shorts/animation, casting and acting.

Creative Gate will be presenting a number of events at this year’s Black Nights Film Festival and also provide year-round activities. Among the latter are the development of a new international brand platform for Estonian film based on a study conducted by Tallinn University, the website www.filminestonia.eu, and a project to promote Estonia as a location for recording film music using local sound studios, orchestras and choirs. Another priority is to support the companies in their international sales activity.

Tiina Lokk, Director of Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival:
- Supporting the development of the wider audiovisual and creative industry is a key aim for us and we are excited to launch Creative Gate together with our partner organisations. With Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival now recognized as an A class festival we can offer a strong platform for new collaborations to emerge. The “gate” we envision opens in two directions – it will enable our talent to explore new markets, and make it easy for the international industry to discover the craftsmanship and creativity Estonia has to offer.

Aivar Roop, Head of Creative Gate:
- Creative Gate is a recognition of the crucial roles music, cast, post production and other art department professions play for the creation of great films and we will be providing a wide range of initiatives to help develop and support them. The recent success and achievements of Estonian film makers put us in a great starting position. Many of our activities taking place after the festival are already fully booked, so we see a strong interest from the industry.

The partners of the project are Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival; Baltic Film, Media, Arts and Communication School of Tallinn University; ShortEst Estonian Short Film Centre, Estonian Film Institute; Estonian Fashion Brands’ Association; Estonian Film Industry Export Union; Estonian Film Art Department and Film Artists’ Union.

The project is supported with the amount of 300 000 EUR from the European Regional Development Fund.

Other Worlds Austin SciFi Film Festival has announced its final wave of programming for Austin’s first and only SciFi film festival (Dec 7-10) at Flix Brewhouse. The slate includes the Texas premiere of Closing Night Film CURVATURE  the North American premieres of TUFTLAND and RESTORATION; the US Premiere of DEFECTIVE; and the special retro screening of the 1979 Disney classic THE BLACK HOLE, with Defender of the Universe Awardee director Gary Nelson.

In addition, Other Worlds Austin will present three fantastic shorts programs, one entirely dedicated to the horror sidebar, Under Worlds Austin.  “Every year we welcome submissions from all over the galaxy, and every year we seem to have harder choices,” says Bears Fonté, OWA Founder and Artistic Director. “Our Under Worlds program is especially strong for year two, including the Finnish brooding horror TUFTLAND—sort of a ROSEMARY’S BABY meets MARTHA MARCY MAE MARLENE. I met writer/director Roope

Olenius a few years ago when I programmed BUNNY THE KILLER THING at SF Indiefest, and he reached out to me with his directorial debut.” “HOSTILE and FLORA are both crossover Horror/SciFi films that will please fans of both genres,” says Jordan Brown, Associate Artistic Director, “and I love FLORA’s 1929 setting, and botanical backdrop. RESTORATION is another North American Premiere and plays like an Australian episode of BLACK MIRROR.”

Also at the festival this year, OWA will venture into midnight madness territory with the World Premiere of PURPLE FURY. “As for PURPLE FURY,” Fonté demurs, “I can neither confirm nor deny that it features the talents of George Miller, Deep Purple, Prince and Stone Temple Pilots. Roger Waters claimed they never actively tried to sync Dark Side of the Moon with Wizard of Oz, and I’m pretty sure no one ever intended this pairing either.”

Other Worlds Austin has previously announced a special retro screening of the SciFi cult classic EVENT HORIZON, with screenwriter Philip Eisner and the Texas premiere of Opening Night Film BEYOND SKYLINE. Badges for the festival start at $60 and can be purchased here. Prices go up November 1st. Check out a teaser clip from Closing Night Film CURVATURE below.

Filmmaker Jeff Witzeman is the writer/producer/director of the controversial documentary “Cancer Can Be Killed” (www.cancercanbekilled.com) that currently is on the festival circuit and available worldwide on Amazon Prime. Witzemen was inspired to make the film after his wife Kerry was cured and cancer free after receiving non-traditional treatments in Europe, instead of opting for the often aggressive treatment methods promoted by the U.S. medical community. Previously he worked as an actor, writer and musician. In the 90’s, he starred in such shows as “Frazier,” “Webster” and a Miller Genuine Draft Super Bowl commercial. In 2000, Jeff Witzeman & The Jealous Housewives became the most radio played unsigned band in America.

Monica Morrison of the event’s official media partner  I Entertainment News (www.ientertainmentnews.com) will moderate the hour long panel, which will also be podcast.   Morrison is the CEO of B Team Media Group and founder of Indie Entertainment Magazine. She produces several podcast shows, including Indie Entertainment Podcast. An advocate for children and filmmakers, she recently launched FundIndies.org, a “pay it forward” niche crowd funding site for independent filmmakers and musicians. A portion of the proceeds go to the “Gracie-Maeve Institute for the Creative Arts,” a creative institute that promotes health and well-being for young adults who have been abandoned or neglected as children or who have grown up in the foster care system.

Following the panel will be a VIP reception where media and industry will have the chance to meet and mingle with the panelists.

Additional panelists and sponsors to be announced shortly.

Seattle International Film Festival  May 17 - June 10, 2018

Call for entries 2018

January 5, 2018 - Late submission

SIFF creates experiences that bring people together to discover
extraordinary films from around the world. It is through the art of cinema that we foster a community that is more informed, aware, and alive.

The Seattle International Film Festival is presented each year from mid-May to mid-June. It is the largest film festival in the United States, presenting more than 400 features, documentaries and short films to an audience of 155,000 each year. SIFF is consistently ranked as one of the top festivals in North America, and is an Academy Award-qualifying festival for short films.

SIFF started out as an event aimed squarely at Seattle filmgoers, renowned for their strong support for independent cinema and their sophisticated, maverick tastes. Through the years, Seattle audiences have proven themselves to be remarkably astute judges of a film's theatrical strength in the American marketplace. This, in turn, has made SIFF a great testing ground for new films. Our emphasis on keeping the Festival an event aimed first and foremost at filmgoers, provides the films themselves with the kind of genuine audience response that has attracted the participation of so many filmmakers and film distributors.

Sundance Institute showcases bold, independent storytelling at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, beginning with today’s announcement of feature films selected across all categories. The Festival hosts screenings in Park City, Salt Lake City and at Sundance Mountain Resort, from January 18–28.

The Festival represents the flagship of the Institute’s public programs, which also include Festivals in London and Hong Kong and other screenings throughout the year. Sundance Institute supports independent artists with year-round programs, granting more than $2.5 million and convening 25 global residency Labs focusing on theatre, film, New Frontier and episodic content.

Robert Redford, President and Founder of Sundance Institute, said, “The work of independent storytellers can challenge and possibly change culture, illuminating our world’s imperfections and possibilities. This year’s Festival is full of artfully-told stories that provoke thought, drive empathy and allow the audience to connect, in deeply personal ways, to the universal human experience.”

Keri Putnam, Executive Director of Sundance Institute, said, "We're proud of the diversity of this year's lineup; emboldening broader, more inclusive independent voices is a crucial part of our work at the Festival and throughout the year. These stories might inspire or move us, even occasionally make us uncomfortable – but they can shift our perspectives, spark conversation and create change.”

John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival, said, “These films and voices offer a creative lens to view our complex times. This is connected, relevant, global art that provides a fresh alternative to the noise dominating the cultural mainstream, and an inspiration for its future.”

For the 2018 Festival, 110 feature-length films were selected, representing 29 countries and 47 first-time filmmakers, including 30 in competition. These films were selected from 13,468 submissions including 3,901 feature-length films and  8,740 short films. Of the feature film submissions, 1,799 were from the U.S. and 2,102 were international. One-hundred feature films at the Festival will be world premieres. In 2017, the Festival drew 71,638 attendees, generated $151.5 million in economic activity for the state of Utah and supported 2,778 local jobs.

More lineup announcements, including Shorts, new-this-year Indie Episodic and New Frontier, are forthcoming; watch sundance.org/festival.

(Director: Jenny Mackenzie, Co-Directors: Jared Ruga, Amanda Stoddard, Producers: Jenny Mackenzie, Jared Ruga, Amanda Stoddard) — In Salt Lake City, Utah, the socially conservative religious monoculture complicated the AIDS crisis, where patients in the entire state and intermountain region relied on only one doctor.
