Seattle International Film Festival  May 17 - June 10, 2018

Call for entries 2018

January 5, 2018 - Late submission

SIFF creates experiences that bring people together to discover
extraordinary films from around the world. It is through the art of cinema that we foster a community that is more informed, aware, and alive.

The Seattle International Film Festival is presented each year from mid-May to mid-June. It is the largest film festival in the United States, presenting more than 400 features, documentaries and short films to an audience of 155,000 each year. SIFF is consistently ranked as one of the top festivals in North America, and is an Academy Award-qualifying festival for short films.

SIFF started out as an event aimed squarely at Seattle filmgoers, renowned for their strong support for independent cinema and their sophisticated, maverick tastes. Through the years, Seattle audiences have proven themselves to be remarkably astute judges of a film's theatrical strength in the American marketplace. This, in turn, has made SIFF a great testing ground for new films. Our emphasis on keeping the Festival an event aimed first and foremost at filmgoers, provides the films themselves with the kind of genuine audience response that has attracted the participation of so many filmmakers and film distributors.

Dieter Kosslick will not renew his contract, ending may 2019, as head of Berlinale

Kosslick_0.jpg

Festival Director Dieter Kosslick in response to a letter signed by a group of German directors concerning the future of the Berlinale:

“I can understand that these directors want transparency when it comes to the process of reforming the Berlinale. Its future is a matter of great importance for all us. Minister of State and Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media Prof. Monika Grütters will be in charge of any proceedings.
My contract ends on May 31, 2019. The Supervisory Board has asked me to submit a proposal for the potential restructuring of the Berlinale. I will do so - and this proposal will be totally independent of me personally”.

German Culture Minister Monika Grütters is responsible for the selection of the next director of Berlin film festival.

79 german directors wrote a petition asking for transparency in the process, it was recently published in Der Spiegel.

"The Berlinale is one of the top three film festivals in the world, and the reorganization of the directorate offers the opportunity to programmatically renew and purify the festival, and we suggest that an international gender equality commission be set up The aim must be to find an outstanding curatorial personality who is passionate about cinema, well connected worldwide and capable of bringing the festival on an equal footing with Cannes and Venice into the future a transparent procedure and a new beginning."

German Culture Minister Monika Grütters is responsible for the selection of the next director of Berlin film festival.

Berlinale: Wieland Speck Hands Over His Position as Head of Panorama to Paz Lázaro

Gruppenbild_Panorama_IMG_559xVAR.jpg

Wieland Speck, until now head of the Berlinale’s Panorama section, will in the future be contributing his extensive range of expertise on film to the Berlinale as Consultant of the Official Programme. Starting in 1982, Wieland Speck joined forces with Manfred Salzgeber to build up Panorama (an autonomous section as of 1980, known as “Info-Schau” until 1985) and made its programme one of the most prestigious in arthouse film.

Wieland Speck took over as head of Panorama in 1992. Over the past 25 years he has continually enhanced and fine-tuned the section’s profile as well as brought international recognition to the Teddy Award. Launched with Manfred Salzgeber in 1987, it was the world’s first and, to this day, most important film prize for queer cinema. Speck has curated more than 1800 promising cinematic productions – fiction films, documentary works and short films - and offered them to the public, press and industry for political debate and cinematographic experience.

“I want to thank Wieland from the bottom of my heart for the fantastic job he has done with Panorama. He established a platform for ambitious independent cinema, and successfully positioned it on the international market. I’m especially pleased that he will now be assisting us with his expertise and experience, and programming the Panorama’s 40th jubilee in 2019,” says Festival Director Dieter Kosslick.

Dieter Kosslick has appointed a new team to run Panorama - headed by Paz Lázaro. Together with Michael Stütz and Andreas Struck she will curate the Panorama programme.

All three have worked alongside Wieland Speck for years. Paz Lázaro became programme manager of Panorama in 2006. Michael Stütz, to date responsible for programme coordination, will – in addition to coordinating the Teddy Award – now contribute to shaping the section as programme manager and curator. Andreas Struck, programme advisor at Panorama as of 2006, will now be responsible - alongside his curatorial tasks - for editorial work and communicating the Panorama programme.

IFFI Goa 2017, XVIII: 55 years of Bondage A thousand eyebrows were raised at the inclusion of a James Bond package in the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) Goa 2017. This was a first retrospect/tribute dedicated to a fictional character, the British MI6 spy who first appeared on screen in 1962. It was hotly debated whether the idea had any merit, considering retrospectives were hitherto confined to directors and countries. As many as nine Bond capers were screened, and at the cost ...

Bose Dead or Alive: Rajkummar Rao in thriller take on Indian freedom fighter If you were a patriot and freedom seeker in the British colonial India of the 1920s-1940s, you either believed in non-violent struggle, a movement led by ‘Mahatma’ Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi or the increasingly violent approach of ‘Netaji’ Subhas Chandra Bose. Mahatma means great soul and Netaji translates as leader. Both belonged to the Congress party, but when Bose called for armed struggle,...

Innovative Independent and Experimental Work to Premiere, Including Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality Storytelling, Site-Specific Installations, Films and Live Performances

Park City, UT — As the intersection of art and technology grows more crowded, Sundance Institute showcases a curated collection of cutting-edge independent experimental media works by creators who are pushing the artistic development of the new mediums of VR, AR, mixed reality (MR) and AI. The 2018 edition of New Frontier at the Sundance Film Festival offers some of the most innovative independent production and experimentation at the crossroads of film, art and technology that is being created today. Programmers assembled an international  slate of VR, MR, and AI from a mix of invitations and submissions to an open call for VR work earlier this year.

New Frontier’s footprint at the Festival has continued to evolve, responsive to increased demand. This year, New Frontier programming encompasses three venues:

  • The New Frontier Exhibition at Kimball Art Center will host immersive dance and cutting edge VR & MR works as well as works involving Artificial Intelligence (AI).
  • New Frontier at The Ray, where works will range from VR, MR, and AR to AI and new media technologies. The Box at New Frontier at The Ray, a 40-seat mobile VR cinema, will showcase four different mobile VR programs over the course of the Festival.
  • The VR Bar at Music Cafe offers a selection of The New Frontier  mobile VR program, plus world premieres of hot, late-breaking VR content created by some of the most exciting companies in the field.

Robert Redford, President and Founder of Sundance Institute, said, “Technology-enabled storytelling continues to develop into a thriving industry. It’s essential to protect the creative spaces where creators can develop work and reach audiences independent of commercial pressures. The work that we showcase at New Frontier sets the agenda for the year in creative cross-media storytelling.”

Shari Frilot, Sundance Film Festival Senior Programmer and Chief Curator, New Frontier, said, “This year’s artists push the boundaries of a host of new technologies in powerful and surprising ways. The story creates the body and the corpus takes on new meaning, offering a new framework for personal interactions in modern society.”

New Frontier alumni include Doug Aitken, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Chris Milk, Nonny de la Peña, Pipilotti Rist and Jennifer Steinkamp. The Institute’s support extends well beyond its curated slate of Festival projects, and includes the annual New Frontier Story Lab, which offers mentorship and development opportunities for new media storytellers, New Frontier Day Labs in cities nationwide and the New Frontier Residency Program, which combines the might of partners such as MIT Media Lab's Social Computing Group and Jaunt Studios to drive groundbreaking data-visualization and VR storytelling tools, training and resources to independent artists.

In addition to the New Frontier program announced today, films across all categories, including works in the Shorts, Special Events and new-this-year Indie Episodic sections, have been announced and are listed at sundance.org/festival.

LIVING IN THE FUTURES PAST by Susan Kucera, A documentary presented by Jeff Bridges.
USA October 2017 - 83 minutes

Academy Award Winner, Jeff Bridges presents this beautifully photographed tour de force of original thinking on who we are and the environmental challenges we face. Jeff, alongside prominent scientists and authors, weave evolution, emergence, entropy, dark ecology, and what some are calling the end of nature, into a story that helps us understand our place among the species of Earth’s household. The film upends our way of thinking and provides original insights into our subconscious motivations, the unintended consequences, what to do about our fossil slaves, and how our fundamental animal nature influences our future as Humankind.

HOW ONE MAN'S DEATH, CHANGED HISTORY

Trailer I Website I Blog on filmfestivals.com ITwitter I Contact I Festival Screeners

An expose of the last King of Iran’s medical story

On January 16,1979, the Shah of Iran Mohamad Reza Pahlavi, left the royal palace, the Peacock Throne and his beloved country Iran for the last time, commencing what became a 19-month odyssey into exile. He wondered hopelessly from Egypt to Morocco, Bahamas, Mexico, the U.S, then Panama and back again to Egypt where he died furtively at the age of 60. His death had profound consequences for the future of the Middle East and the world, yet the untold medical story of the last King of Iran has to date remained a puzzling mystery. By unraveling the secrecy surrounding this critical period of history, beginning from the onset of the Shah’s illness, to the diagnosis/misdiagnosis and maltreatment, “A Dying King” exposes the main causes of the Iranian Revolution, the pursuant 444 days hostage crisis, and the adversarial relations between the U.S and Iran.

Abu Dhabi, UAE – Packed with tournaments, unreleased games, entertainment, workshops, and gaming celebrities, the inaugural Games Con got underway at ADNEC as the ultimate gaming festival in the Middle East, spanning three days from November 23 to 25 and hosting 10,233 visitors.

Games Con attendees lined-up to meet their heroes including YouTube sensations Vikkstar, Zerkaa and Ali A, one of the most popular YouTubers of all time with over 13.2 billion views. Voice over actors Chloe Hollings (Overwatch’s Widowmaker), Brina Palencia (a.k.a) Mad Moxxi, and DC Douglas, voice of Albert Wesker from ‘Resident Evil’ also proved very popular, along with teams from Nasr and Yalla eSports.

Unreleased games were unveiled to the crowd and lucky participants got a chance to test them before they hit the shelves in the new year. Even Ali A tried the hotly anticipated, and as yet unreleased ‘Dissidia NT – Final Fantasy’ live on the Entertainment Stage, powered by HP Omen. In addition, Facebook joined forces with Games Con to demonstrate its new virtual reality technology, Facebook Spaces, while GamerTech built a gaming PC out of a Corvette engine-block live on their stand during the show, and Alienware showcased their new unreleased Area 51 Gaming Desktop.

The Entertainment Stage, powered by HP Omen played host to many of Games Con’s biggest attractions over the course of the weekend including the “Beat the FIFA Video Game Ambassador” Ahmed Al Nasheet, and Pokken Tournament, as well as panel discussions, YouTube gamer showdowns, live performances, and gaming advice. The cosplay competition, where the winners take home a portion of the AED 31,000 prize fund, also drew the crowds. Rhegel Aliling as Timbersaw won Best RPG; Alistair Vowles as Reinheart took home Best FPS; and Andrea Hearn dressed as Zelda received Best Group Award.

Hundreds participated in various competitions and tournaments throughout Games Con, and fans were delighted by the huge quantity of prize give-aways including Hyper X Gaming accessories and a limited-edition Grand Turismo Sport Playstation 4. Competitions like the FIFA Fanta Masters were hotly contested, as players battled for the honour of representing the UAE in the international tournament, and a chance to take home AED 100,000.

Virtual Reality competition VIVE Vs MSI saw teams compete for the HTC VIVE worth AED 2,599 each, while players who took the top spots in the Tekken 7 and Injustice 2 competitions were awarded with their share of the $20,000 on offer across both events which took place on Friday and Saturday, and the MSI Dota 2 Tournament finals were a buzzing hive of activity as visitors stayed late into the evening to watch the Colligate eSports Final on Saturday. It wasn’t all new-age technical wizardry however there were also tabletop tournaments in Magic: The Gathering, Catan, and Splendor.

Finally, there was also a full schedule of workshops throughout the weekend aimed at budding game developers, as well as those who have an interest in what it takes to put some of these incredible experiences together. Here, the National Media Council (NMC) invited all video-game developers to a national contest, where amateur and professional developers pitched their ideas for video games to a jury of professional developers and production studios.

The brands exhibiting at the event considered it a resounding success, including Febronia Armia, from GKD who brought four unreleased games to the show including Monster Hunter: World, Gravel, Attack on Titan 2 and Dynasty Warriors 9, who said, "Wonderful management from the entire team behind the event. Best organized gaming event in the region in the last few years."

Suzy Pallett, Group Director Trade & Consumer, Informa Exhibitions added: “With over 10,000 gamers joining us this weekend, it has been a great pleasure to launch Games Con. We want to thank the industry, the consumers and Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority for supporting us in this hugely successful launch. We are already in planning for an even bigger event in 2018 where we will create a hub for gamers in the MENA region to Game Together!”

These actions are developed around several key points:

Accompanying emerging movie fields:

On the agenda for these international forays: touring universities and animation studios, and meeting with local institutional representatives as well as with the sector’s professional entities in order to sketch out the most encompassing picture of things and analyze the territory’s context and dynamic potential.

The goal is also to accompany an entire sector in its volition to cooperate internationally, either through co-productions or else student exchanges.

This is why CITIA’s next trip, to Singapore, will include the École Émile Cohl and the Atelier de Sèvres in the aim of exploring various schools and universities, setting up future joint projects which may develop into exchanges, perhaps even leading to the opening of a satellite school in the country.

The 21st edition of the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (aka PÖFF) saw the festival’s global online media reach cross the one billion mark, more than doubling last year’s result. The festival had media coverage in 70 different countries.

Black Nights also set a new attendance record of 80 289 which is a slight rise from the previous two editions. The festival and its industry event Industry@Tallinn, co-organised with the Baltic Event co-production market, hosted 1291 guests, which is a 24% rise on last year.

The festival held 909 screenings, with the main programme including 233 feature films from 70 different countries.  There were 20 world, 26 international and 10 European premieres.

In addition, 50 features were screened at the Children’s and Youth Film Festival, Just Film, which also set a new attendance record of 17 000 and hosted its biggest number of guests to date - 28 people.

The new sub-festival PÖFF Shorts that combines two formerly separate sub-festivals – animation festival Animated Dreams and short film festival Sleepwalkers – hosted 130 people and screened 257 shorts, with eight films having their world premieres.

The festival saw it’s biggest number of volunteers to date, with more than 400, from 10 different countries, doing over 15 000 work hours.

This rise in interest comes as a positive surprise to festival director Tiina Lokk: „We are extremely grateful to the journalists and filmmakers who have trusted us and attended the festival during the busy pre-holiday period of the year! It is truly astonishing to see both, the number of accredited guests and journalists rise by a quarter with one edition!“

She went on to add: 'Although I consider the festival, in many senses, to still be in the early development phases. Having gained A-category festival accreditation, we can now say that a considerable part of the world is showing interest in what we do and that is extremely inspiring for the whole team."

Programme entries make first deals

As reported by Screen International, some of the titles in the two international competition programmes of the festival have already confirmed their first deals. The Official Selection title The Ball (dir Pasquale Scimeca) that had its world premiere at Black Nights has sold world rights to Italy‘s Coccinelle Film.

Also world-premiering in the Official Selection, the German-US co-production A Thought of Ecstasy (dir RP Kahl) has sold international rights to Luxembourg-based Paul Thiltges Distributions.

Having its international premiere in the Official Selection, Little Tito and the Aliens, (dir Paola Randi), distributed by True Colours has sold to Turkey (buyer Medyavizyon), Poland (Kino Swiat) and China (Times Vision).

The Belgian drama Resurrection that had its international premiere in the First Feature Competition of the festival was acquired by the Italian sales company TVCO.

Writer, director and producer Maurice Haeems and cinematographer David Kruta should be proud of themselves for this achievement.  Chimera is going to be one of thee science fiction titles to watch for in 2018, and it’s going to be a serious contender for numerous awards whether it hits the film festival circuit or goes straight-to-DVD. Part sci-fi, part thriller, part horror, and all outstanding! Excellent review of Chimera in TG Geek

user
“Chimera” is part sci-fi, part thriller, part horror, and all outstanding! "From the first few minutes of this film I immediately realized that I was in store for something entirely different. It doesn’t play like your typical monster horror movie, rather it shows us the horror of humanity and exposes some of our darker natures and obsessions, as well as highly compromised morality, all in the name of science.  Chimera is a very intelligent film, and unlike...

Star Wars-The Last Jedi, Review: The Lost Jedi George Lucas maintains that his Star Wars films were for kids. Back in the late 70s, when the trade-mark skewed angle intro rolling text greeted us as the film began, I was not a kid. Maybe the sensibilities of an Indian film-goer at 25 were akin to the school-kids in the West, but I loved what I saw. Since, I have seen most, if not all, the core movies and the spin-offs/anthologies, most of them likeable, but the 40th anniversary release saw me ...

South Africa, Argentina, Thailand… A team that’s tuned into territories and their needs

This is why CITIA’s next trip, to Singapore, will include the École Émile Cohl and the Atelier de Sèvres in the aim of exploring various schools and universities, setting up future joint projects which may develop into exchanges, perhaps even leading to the opening of a satellite school in the country.

cp_2017_citia_deplacement_thailande_018.jpg

Accompanying talents:

As part of the Animation du Monde structure, Annecy continues to assist creative talents via workshops in selected countries (storytelling, storyboard and pitches, etc.). At the outcome of these workshops, winners are announced who will automatically participate in the 2018 Mifa Animation du Monde pitch sessions. This year, Africa and the Andean nations will benefit from this opportunity.

Partnering with major markets:

>>> Continuation of our cooperation with Ventana Sur to spot and then bolster South American animation.
For more information

>>> 1st joint endeavor with DISCOP, the African continent’s Number One audiovisual market. This year the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and its Market (Mifa), the DISCOP Markets and the African Animation Network (AAN) have partnered to launch a call for projects for a Pan-African animation pitch contest.

Best of Annecy

It should likewise be remembered that the Annecy International Animated Film Festival radiates throughout the world thanks to the Best of Annecy 2017 program which condenses a selection of prize-winning short films from last year’s festival with short opening sequences crafted by the students of GOBELINS, l’école de l’image.

The Best Of also encompasses specific programming for younger viewers: Best of Annecy Kids. This includes 10 funny and poetic short films, for children 5 and over, even if the younger ones will love them too!

From Georgia, moving on down through Mexico, Clermont-Ferrand, Geneva, Tahiti, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Jerusalem, Peno (Peru), Montreal and on to Cape Town and Buenos Aires: Annecy is circling the globe!
