The 12th edition of the Transylvania International Film Festival (TIFF) kicked off on May 31st.. The festival will run until June 9th, 2013. Located in the beautiful historic city of Cluj, TIFF is the largest film festival in Romania and has experienced a fabulous and highly energetic growth over the past few years. In 2012, festival presented 241 films from 46 countries, screened in 13 venues.
More than 800 guests (directors, actors, producers, sales agents, journalists, distributors) visited the festival in 2012 and there have been a record number of 70.000+ viewers. Past festival guests include Wim Wenders, Claude Lelouch, Claudia Cardinale, Geraldine Chaplin, Catherine Deneuve, Vanessa Redgrave, Marin Karmitz, Annie Girardot, Alexandra Maria Lara, Nicolas Roeg, Radu Mihaileanu, Julie Delpy, Udo Kier, Jacqueline Bisset, Lukas Moodysson, Michael Radford and Todd Solondz.
The festival’s main goal is to promote the art of cinema by presenting some of the most innovative and spectacular films of the moment. The Festival program features a 12-title competition for 1st & 2nd features, a FIPRESCI Competition, a panorama of 2012 award-winners from prestigious international film festivals (Supernova), premieres of Romanian features and shorts, a section dedicated to horror and fantasy films, filmmakers’ profiles, a “no limit” showcase of transgressive and provocative films, retrospectives, special and collateral events and open air screenings in the Central Square of Cluj.
The 2013 line-up consists of more than 200 feature films, including a Focus on Slovakian and Greek cinema, a special program dedicated to Russian cinema, the traditional Hungarian Day, tributes to Stephen Frears, Forgacs Peter, Olivier Assayas, a parallel music festival called AlternaTIFF, a rich program of children and youth films - EducaTIFF, and the 2nd edition of Transilvania Talent Lab, a campus for film students, producers, writers, actors scheduled from June 2nd-6th. Romanian Days is a 3-day marathon including the most recent local productions, along with several workshops and panels, scheduled between June 5th-8th.
