"Renowned international authors will be at the Manzioli Open-Air Cinema, 3 - 9 June 2013 at Kino Otok Isola in Slovenia. Great filmmakers are getting ready to arrive; the screens in Isola are ready to shine in the wideness of inspiring stories: Isola’s traditional venues will be imbued with the 9th International Film Festival Kino Otok – Isola Cinema. The international part of the festival will begin on Thursday, 6 June, with an official opening, paying tribute to Silvan Furlan and his work. The Year of Silvan Furlan, honouring the 60th anniversary of his birth, Slovenian film director, all year long with various events, the Silvan’s Bay section will screen his only author film Deklica s frnikulami (Slovenija, 1997), a documentary on Slovenia’s first worldwide famous film star Ita Rina. Live piano will afterwards accompany Erotikon (Gustav Machatý, Czechoslovakia, 1929), a silent film which placed Ita Rina among the immortals.

Prior to Thursday evening, each day will be dedicated to one of the great film stories. All of them, yet each in its own way, focus on decisive historical moments and speak loudly – of today and tomorrow above all. Na svoji zemlji (France Štiglic, Slovenia (Yugoslavia), 1948), depicting a two-year-long fighting of partisans to liberate the Primorje region from Italian occupation, is the first Slovene sound feature film and the first Slovene film that was screened at the Cannes Film Festival. We will remember the 65th anniversary of this important event together with Štefka Drolc and Aleksander Valič.

Milestone events of the 20th century are vividly remembered by the lucid hundred year old Dragica Srzentić in the film One Woman – One Century (Jedna žena – jedan vek, Serbian filmmaker Želimir Žilnik, Srbia, 2011. A documentary comprised of statements, interviews and reconstructions depicts her fascinating and almost incredible life story. At the same time, it serves as a quick course of the history of the Balkans before, during and after the Second World War. Dragica was born in Istria and was, due to an unusual set of circumstances, present at a series of key events that shaped the destiny of Yugoslavia. The screening in Isola will be attended by the renowned Serbian directorŽelimir Žilnik, known for his cult films, such as his first feature Early Works (Rani radovi, 1969).

The 9th Kino Otok will be rounded up by The Cardboard Village (Il villaggio di cartone, Italy, 2011) by Ermanno Olmi, one of the most noted Italian filmmakers, well known to the Slovene film audience also due to his complete retrospective, organized in 2004 by the Slovene Cinematheque. In his latest film, Olmi puts Michael Lonsdale in a role of a priest who rediscovers the essence of his vocation: to help those who have been driven to the gates of Europe and to the edge of existence and dignity by the current political and economic situation.

The Manzioli Open-Air Cinema section gladly presents a French interlacement of reality, memories and illusions, The Girl from Nowhere (La fille de nulle part, Jean-Claude Brisseau, France, 2012), winner of the Golden Leopard award at the 2012 Locarno Film Festival. Jean-Claude Brisseau became famous at the end of the eighties and beginning of the nineties with sincere dramas, including the White Wedding (Noce blanche) with Vanessa Paradis, and is also well known to the audience of the Ljubljana Film Festival. Diego Star (Frédérick Pelletier, Canada / Belgium, 2013), a drama full of social realism, will shove us into a fierce daily routine of Russian cargo ship workers at the Canadian coast in winter – a world in which workers are collateral damage and rights are proportional to the obedience to the superior.  Frédérick Pelletier, the director of the film, will join us in Izola! The Open –Air Cinema programme will be rounded up by a shocking personal story My Stolen Revolution (Nahid Persson Sarvestani, Sweden, 2013). Nahid Persson Sarvestani was a young left-wing student at the outburst of the Iranian revolution in 1979. Thirty years later and with new protests in sight in her former homeland, she organizes a moving encounter with her peers who, like her, managed to get away and survive, " said Maja Ropret Kino Otok Isola
