Vijayanand, Review: All Vijay, No Anand

vijayanand.jpg
Vijayanand, Review: All Vijay, No Anand You might be pardoned for mistaking the film to be a bio-pic on the genius Hindi film director, Vijay Anand (Guide, Jewel Thief, Johnny Mera Naam). But that can only arise out of ignorance, for if you have read anything about the film or seen a poster or video, you will be aware that this is nothing like a Vijay Anand bio-pic. It is, in fact, a docu-drama about a family in Karnataka that started with the printing industry and the next generation went in...

Life is Good, Review: Is it?

Life%20is%20Good%2C%20Poster.jpg
Life is Good, Review: Is it? A sweeping statement, to be sure. Life has its ups and down and is good to some people while not so good to others. To the central character in Life is Good, Rameshwar, played by Jackie Shroff, life has been rather bad, on the whole. So, bad, in fact, that he contemplates committing suicide at least twice. Yes, there is a long period in between when he finds love in an unlikely quarter, but like the tagline of LG (Lucky Goldstar) Electronics, ‘Life’s G...

Whereas some schools of thought may ascribe to the theory that crime ...

The MBIFF is a World Class Event.
Submissions end December 31,  2022, submit through filmfreeway.com, or through the festivals website, myrtlebeachfilmfestival.comThe Myrtle Beach International Film Festival has been awarded several prestigious awards including one of the "Top 25 film festivals worth the entry fee" by Movie Maker Magazine and has become a favorite of many filmmakers and film enthusiast!

The MBIFF 18 will take place April 18 - 22 2023.
What sets the MBIFF apart from other festivals is our commitment to the true spirit of film. Once you are here, you are family.
Our judging panel includes judges from all walks of life, why? As with any subjective judging, it is important to have a broad spectrum of perspectives. Many film festivals house only filmmakers as judges, which can lead to niche judging which we feel is unfair to filmmakers, especially if you do not fall inside their niche. Your film receives the fair and honest treatment it deserves. By including other perspectives from different walks of life it creates a balanced judging platform, which we believe is why we have been touted as having one of the best film line ups in the World. We believe that your project receives a more overall perspective grading as to whether it entertains or informs a wider viewing audience rather than that of only an entire panel of film makers. Not to worry, we do have several film professional on board as judges!
The goal of the founder and director Jerry Dalton, was to create a venue for independent film makers which is not corrupted by politics.
The MBIFF screens projects in a multi-million dollar theater, housing state of the art technology.
We look forward to viewing your film /project!

HOT MONEY by Susan Kucera (director of Jeff Bridges Living in the future’s past)

Former NATO Supreme Allied Commander, General Wesley Clark and his son Wes Clark Jr. take us on a journey through the complicated realities of our financial system and its profound exposure to climate change. Hot Money outs the whole game, the whole charade, the whole crapshoot of the money system with all the humor and intelligence of a New Yorker cartoon. Combined with the wisdom of international business experts and academics, Hot Money is rich with historical context. It severs the knot of economic and political forces that may lead to societal collapse.

12TH HOUR narrated by David Morse

Documentary by Susan Kucera (director of Jeff Bridges Living in the future’s past)

USA July 2021 51 minutes 48 seconds

Much of our population currently lives with hopeful delusions about climate change. These delusions, many of which are built in by evolution, hamper our ability to meaningfully address the problem.

Our brains evolved to solve short-term challenges for our survival. Climate change is a long-term challenge to our survival. Can we bridge the gap between these modes of thinking?

Emmy-nominated actor David Morse narrates the brutally honest 12th hour with insight from noted evolutionary biologists, climate scientists, cognitive researchers and psychologists.

Visionary thinkers like Peter Russell, Dr. Paul Piff, Dr. Kari Norgaard and dozens of the brightest minds in academia lay out an unflinching look at mankind: our past, our abilities, our shortcomings and what may be humankind's final destination.

If we have any hope to survive the changes we’ve locked in to our climate, we need to be honest with ourselves and our limitations. The 12th Hour lays out our biases so that we may overcome them.

ENOUGH Lebanon's Darkest Hour

Documentary by Daisy Gedeon second feature documentary
Australia  june 2021 90 minutes (in post)

ENOUGH! Lebanon’s Darkest Hour follows Australian-Lebanese filmmaker Daizy Gedeon’s personal and independent introspection into how her ancestral homeland, the place her family was forced to flee in the 1970s because of the Civil War, has ended up in a state of complete catastrophe. It is a story of awakening in which Daizy is forced to abandon her idealism about Lebanon and face the cold, harsh truth about the country’s dark underbelly which is its most sinister enemy.

Daizy prosecutes the case against the corrupt political class which has reduced a proud people to beg for garbage collection instead of greatness and negotiate potholes rather than peace.

ENOUGH! is the plea and the prayer, the feeling and fierce determination of the 4.5 million Lebanese in Lebanon as well as the 16 million members of the Lebanese diaspora scattered around the world, whose hearts continue to bleed for a homeland they are desperate to return to and so deeply want to believe in...once again.

The Sound of Us directed by Chris Gero

the-sound-of-us-poster-corporate-approved-FINAL_cannes_450.jpg

"The Sound of Us" illustrates that during this critical time in world and U.S. history, music gives sound to hope and courage, allows us to grieve and be honest, and is the great, universal language that unites us all.

As the world grapples with unrest the profound truth remains that, through music, we are not alone.

The Sound of Us weaves inspiring stories about the beauty and goodness of music with interviews and performances by artists such as Ben Folds, Sarah McLachlan, Avery*Sunshine, Eric Whitacre, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Hiromi, Antonio Sanchez, Butch Walker, Will Wells, Patti Smith, and many more. Combined, these powerful vignettes illustrate how music heals us, gives us hope for the future through our children, keeps our heritage and history alive, allows us to have the most difficult of conversations, sheds light on current struggles, and continues to invite us back to the thing that unites us all - music.

The film is directed by Chris Gero, a Grammy nominated, American music industry executive, concert producer, record producer, songwriter, film director and composer, founder of Yamaha Entertainment Group of America and Chief Artist Relations Executive for Yamaha Artist Relations Group

Two-day Bollywood International Film Festival kicks off on the 17th in Mumbai

Two-day Bollywood International Film Festival kicks off on the 17th in Mumbai

“A film festival needs to be ethical and impartial, and that is exactly what Bollywood International Film Festival strives to be,” said Bollywood International Film Festival (BIFF) founder-chairperson Pratibha Sharma, and actor-director Yashpal Sharma at the media meet of the film festival, held at the Harmony Hall of Carnival Cinema, Oshiwara, Mumbai

Of the 200 plus entries received by the festival, the best were chosen by an eminent team of international filmmakers. The select films from the chosen ones will be on view for audiences at Carnival Cinemas Mumbai, during December 17-18.

The festival will also showcase a special screening of Yashpal Sharma’s Dada Lakhmi, the Haryanvi film that has won more than 68 awards globally, and has been running to packed houses for over six weeks in Haryana state.

While the eminent jury comprises of Ashok Rane, Amit Rai, Sandeep Sharma, French actress Marine Borgo (spelt Bobo in the press release) and Tauqeer Ahmed from Bangladesh, the BIFF team members Monika Davar, Minaxi Singh, Dalbir Singh, Sameer Chowdhary, Tabassum Jahan, Alpana Suhasini, Sunil Bainiwal, Vishal Sharma and Tapan Patani were present, along with Dr Anusha Srinivasan Iyer, who is handling the Public Relations

“Our aim is to introduce people to quality cinema, whether it be feature film, short film, mobile film or a documentary.” Films from the US, Afghanistan, Iran and many European countries will be a part of this festival that also boasts of masterclasses for industry aspirants.

The programme circulated at the presscon shows that proceedings will begin on both days with Ganesh Vandana (worship of the God Ganesha). Only four long films are scheduled, one of which is Dada Lakhmi (Chand). This film is written and directed by Yashpal Sharma, having him in the title role of a poet singer of Haryana. Sharma kept on denying that he has a role in the festival, although he conducted most of the press conference. There were two big posters of Dada Lakhmi forming the backdrop of the seating arrangement. The film, though certified in 2022, was shown at the Rajasthan film festival around two years ago, where Yashpal presented it himself. It was not clear whether Dada Lakhmi is in the competition or not.

Two names of jury members were revealed on the occasion: Tauqeer Ahmed and Marianne Borgo. Tauqeer is a Bangladeshi director in whose film Fagun Haway Yashpal had acted, he announced. I have seen the film, and it is good. He called Tauqeer the Shyam Benegal of Bangladesh. Marianne Borgo (see picture) is a French actress who works mainly in television and has often played queens. She is on the advisory board of the Rajasthan International Film Festival as well as on the Jury of the Khajuraho International Film festival. Yashpal and Marianne probably met at Rajasthan and Khajuraho, two years ago. They did mingle in Rajasthan. Names of three other jurors were announced in a press release later. This is the third Bollywood International Film Festival. The first two were held online, during Covid. The number of entries received has shown a downward trend, from 260 to under 200 this year.

It is de rigueur at such events that snacks and beverages be served. On some occasions, where the event falls around lunch-time, even lunch is served. This press conference was scheduled for 3.45 p.m. and rescheduled for 4 p.m. The location is not convenient to reach and considerable travel was involved for many of us scribes. Till 5 pm, not even water was served. Then, the conference began and were shown a signature film of the festival, in two versions, followed by a trailer of Dada Lakhmi. Yashpal Sharma then took over the mike and pointed out that the delay in commencing the proceedings was because some journalists came very late, although he himself had arrived on time (he had). The addresses and Q&A went on for about 35 minutes, at the end of which Yashpal said, in his rich baritone voice, “Anybody else dares to ask a question?” Nobody did.

Time for snacks. Packed in a box, the samosa and sandwich seemed to have been prepared at 5.35 am, and not 5.35 pm. They were awful. I took a couple of bites and left the box alone. What I, and some 25 others, desperately needed was a cup of tea. After tea, I could leave immediately and reach my next venue well in time. No luxury, tea and coffee are available in abundance at all such meets. There was no tea around. From 5.35 till 6.15, a period of 40 minutes, we were given assurances that tea is “on its way”. At 6.15, I had to leave, to attend the preview of Ajay Wardhan, scheduled at 6.30, and it was too late to travel by bus, but reachable by auto-rickshaw in 15 minutes. So I left, and spent a decent amount on the auto fare. When I left, the crowd had thinned to just 10-12 persons, the others having left before me. A cup of tea costs Rs. 10, and 25 cups would cost Rs. 250. This is equivalent to USD3. And yet, no tea was served. Not till I left. One can carry snacks and biscuits, if the hosts decide not to offer edible stuff, but one cannot carry tea or coffee, both of which are national addictions.

Some questions arise.

Is a two-day affair enough to qualify as a film festival? The minimum is usually five days.

Should a film made by the promoter of the festival be showcased at such a festival?

Should its trailer be shown at the festival’s official press conference?

Should the festival be held when the Third Eye Asian Film Festival is running concurrently?

Was the media treated fairly?

I do not expect any answers, except the wrath of the event organisers.

DOC NYC 2022

DOC NYC is the largest North American documentary festival and returned for the 13th edition in 2022, presenting an amazing success story for a relatively young festival. DOC NYC is produced and presented by the IFC Center, a division of AMC Networks. It was held in person from November 9-17 at IFC Center, SVA Theatre, Cinepolis Chelsea. DOC NYC continued online through November 27 with most of the festival’s films available for streaming through their own platform. The program included 110 feature lengths documentaries and over 90 shorts as well as numerous events. DOC NYC 2022 showcased 29 Word and 27 US premieres. The main slate US and International Competition section featured 23 premieres. Held for the second time, Kaleidoscope Competition focused on innovative poetic and narrative productions from around the globe and the perennial Metropolitan Competition carried New York stories and personalities. The non-competition sections remain very popular and included again “Fight the Power” on activism, “Short List” with 15 Oscar nominees and awardees, and “Winners Circle” highlighting films with significant awards from international festivals.

Compared to prior years, more sponsors appeared to support DOC NYC 2022.  This may be the result of the growing popularity of documentary productions, ready access to these films through streaming services and at home viewing, and the relative decline of traditional film consumption. The major 2022 sponsors included A&E, HBO, NBC, Netflix, Discovery, National Geographic, Showtime, Amazon Studios, Hulu, and Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Screened as the closing night film, the extraordinary innovative 2022 documentary THE CONSPIRACY world premiered at the festival. This feature by Russian American Maxim Pozdorovkin included startling animated segments and archival footage. Superbly researched, the director covers more than 250 years of antisemitic conspiracies targeting Jewish groups and their frequently deadly impact on the victims. One of the outstanding features of THE CONSPIRACY is that it shares the origins of antisemitic thoughts with the audience and provides detailed information and data that elucidates an issue which has which is still topical today, the widespread propagation of false narratives. THE CONSPIRACY clarifies that these devastating beliefs have been an essential part of Western European and American convictions for a long time. They gained their power mostly after being adopted and spread by policymakers, religious figures, and interest groups to serve their needs. Antisemitic conspiratorial ideologies also provided readymade answers to the conflicts generated by the turmoil of industrialization and modernization, the rise of the capitalist class structure and its wealth disparities, and open armed conflicts. These ideologies gave a false face to the enemy and a narrative that the ruling powers were not at fault but instead it was well-connected secret Jewish groups using their wealth for exploitation. The French revolution and the opening of civil society for Jews in France and other countries becomes part of the conspiracy. The film shows the role of the Jesuit Augustin Barruel tying the French Revolution to Jews and the widespread use of the Elders of Zion Protocol to blame Jewish people for problems in society. The documentary examines how ruling figures like Czar Nicholas used conspiratorial thought to oppress Jews and like other prominent figures disputed the concept of civil rights for Jews. Others, like Henry Ford, an admirer of Adolf Hitler, funded widespread publications of antisemitic thought in the United States. The director, Pozdorovkin, devotes enlightening long passages to three well known Jewish families and their victimization by the antisemitic structures of their countries The French officer Alfred Dreyfus, the German Banker Max Warburg, and the Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky who was born into the Jewish Bronstein family. The sensitive portrayal of these individuals and their families by outstanding actors was impressive and made THE CONSPIRACY an even more powerful and influential exploration of this dark history.

THE WINDS BLOWS THE BORDER, a Brazilian documentary which received the International Feature Documentary Special Jury Price at Hot Docs 2022 was directed by Laura Faerman and Marina Weis and produced by Julio Matos.  It presented both sides of the long lasting struggle between the Guarani-Kaiowá people and the expanding agribusiness in a region bordering Paraguay that encompasses 10,00 hectares (24,700 acres). Produced in late 2022, before the defeat of former president Jair Bolsonaro and the election of Lula da Silva, the documentary captures the positions of the indigenous people defending their land and of the ‘ruralistas’, the wealthy land owners agribusiness operators. What is at stake for the native people is the destruction of their land and communal life forcing resistance to the white groups claiming ownership of the land. On the other side are families claiming ownership of land they are occupying and expanding. From a legal perspective, the ownership issue has not been clarified. The native people invoke their sovereignty and constitutional rights. The landowners claim 123 privately held farms have already invaded. The landowners are represented by attorney Luana Ruiz who is allied with Bolsonaro and heiress to family land. Ruiz suggests that federal intervention is urgently required to restore order. Ruiz argues that the impunity of indigenous actions undermines the landowners, though landowners and the allied agribusiness dominate the judicial system in that region. If the new president Lula can change the situation remains to be seen.  His victory was by a slim margin and the wealthy landowners do not support him, nor the legislative assemblies which are dominated by supporters of the former president Bolsonaro. Interspersed sections in the film show wealthy landowners’ lifestyles and views, rituals of the native people and their demonstrations in cities faced with armed responses. The images and statements of a young girl recalling her grandfather’s observations and those who were killed in the struggle against settlers add emotional appeal to the documentary.

Competition Partners Torfoot Studios and Event Horizon Films to Produce and Premiere Best Short Script

Dallas International Film Festival (DIFF), Torfoot Studios and Event Horizon Films announced today details for their 2023 screenplay competition to support emerging writers and encourage more Dallas film productions.

Among the competition prizes, award-winning filmmaker Johnathan Brownlee will produce and direct the winning short script in Dallas and screen it across the film festivals circuit. Brownlee is best known for Three Days In August, The Standoff at Sparrow Creek, Decoding Annie Parker, and Johnathan Brownlee’s AtHome. In 2022, he directed the competition’s wining short script, (*)hit Squad, which was an official selection at Dallas Noir Fest, Dallas International Film Festival, ATX Short Film Showcase, Twin Falls Film Festival, Chandler Film Festival and selected for many others.

“I had a wonderful experience with the contest,” said Hairy Hunsicker, a finalists judge and the 2022 short script winner. “Working with Event Horizon Films and Torfoot Studios was amazing, a dream come true.”

Additional producing partners for (*)hit Squad included, Torfoot Studios, Event Horizon Films and IdeaMan Studios with legal partners Litwin Law Group, PLLC, and The Law Office of LaToya L. Blakely.

The DIFF 2023 screenplay competition, presented annually by Event Horizon Films, offers writers the opportunity to submit scripts for feature films, television pilots and short films, which are judged by readers at top talent agencies and management companies in the industry. Winning screenwriters are exposed to high-profile industry experts and receive a variety of prizes, including celebrity shoutouts, networking opportunities and a produced film.

“So much great talent goes unseen for a craft that is incredibly vital to the filmmaking process,” said James Faust, DIFF’s artistic director. “A produced script is the end game for screenwriters and we are thrilled for the opportunity to help bring this vision to screen.”

DIFF and Event Horizon Films are accepting screenplay entries HERE, now through midnight on June 18, 2023. The short script category closes midnight on April 7. Short script submissions must be 10 pages or under and set in a single, indoor location.

DIFF runs April 28, 2023 to May 4, 2023. Short script winners will be revealed at the festival. Additional competition winners will be announced in the summer.

Cedar Rapids Independent Film Festival, April 14-15, Announces Worldwide Call for Entries

New CRIFF Logo

The 2023 Cedar Rapids Independent Film Festival will be held April 14-15, 2023 at the Collins Road Theatres, 1462 Twixt Town Road, Marion, Iowa. The festival is now accepting entries statewide, nationwide, and worldwide for the 20th annual event. Complete rules are available on the festival website, crifm.org, and on its FilmFreewaypage. The Festival accepts films of all genres and from filmmakers at any level of experience - student to seasoned pro - and there is no date-of-completion requirement.

Films are welcomed from anyone, anywhere, however they must meet the unique Iowa Connection requirement. One mission of CRIFF is is to celebrate the fact that there are people in the production industry everywhere, with ties to Iowa. Films must have an Iowa connection of some sort, which could be a crew or cast member who lived, worked or went to school in Iowa; a film that was produced, at least in part, in Iowa; or a story featuring an Iowa subject or Iowan (past or present, real or fictional). Said Festival Director, Eric Dean Freese, "In past years, we've had films submitted from all across the US, and even from other countries. If you don't think your film qualifies, ask around...you just might have an Iowan on set!"

Professional, Pro-Am (hobbyists or filmmakers earning <60% of their income from production activities), and Student (K-12 up to Postgraduate) filmmakers can enter Narrative Long Form/Features, Narrative Shorts, Documentaries, and Freestyle Films (entries that don't easily fit into the other 3 categories including, but not limited to: experimental films, music videos, film/video art). The entry period has 3 deadlines, each with an increase in fees. There is a 10% discount for being a FilmFreeway Gold Member.

Every entrant, whether selected or not, is welcome to one complimentary full-event ticket, and has the opportunity to schedule a personal Conversation with the Judges on Sunday, April 16. This rare opportunity for one-on-one feedback has long been a hallmark of the Festival, and is regarded by many filmmakers as the most valuable perk of entry. Very few film festivals offer this interaction, which gives each filmmaker a chance to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of their films, as well as gain valuable information that may help them in any future projects.

In addition to being screened twice, Official Selections are honored with a commemorative t-shirt (with the film names on the back), the entry featured in promotional statewide media, and advancement into the Eddy Awards competition, where they are judged by a panel of production industry experts.

Gold and Silver Eddy Awards are presented in each of the 12 categories. The Audience Choice Eddy is voted on by audience members. The $1,000 Collins Road Theatres Scholarship is awarded each year to a student filmmaker to further the recipient's filmmaking education and career. The Iowa Connection Award is unique to CRIFF. This Eddy is awarded to the film which best represents Iowa's filmmaking community. Freese said, "To put it simply, it is a film that tells the world who is making films in Iowa, why they're doing it in this state, and what Iowa stories are being told."

The Cedar Rapids Independent Film Festival was created to provide a venue for Iowa-connected filmmakers to screen their work for peers and general audiences. The organization's primary goals are to encourage independent filmmakers with Iowa ties to continue improving their craft, to provide a place to specifically showcase Iowa-connected films, present a unique cultural event to the community, and to offer networking opportunities for the purpose of strengthening Iowa connections in the film industry everywhere.

The Eddy Awards are named after Thomas Alva Edison who, among many other pursuits, was a pioneer in motion picture technology. The term eddy is also defined as "a current moving contrary to the direction of the main current," which is a suitable description for independent filmmakers, who often go against the current trends in mainstream cinema.

FilmFreeway is used by over 12,000 of the world's best film festivals and contests, including 189 Academy Award / BAFTA Award accredited festivals. More than 1 million entries submitted through the platform have been chosen as Official Selections.

For more information, visit www.crifm.org, and to enter, visit https://filmfreeway.com/CedarRapidsIndependentFilmFestival. Up-to-the-minute information can also be found on the festival's Facebook page and other social media platforms. Email CRIFF at info@crifm.org.

The 45th Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival – the largest short film festival in the world – will be held from 27th January through 4th February 2023.

Three competitions bring together the short films selected this year from over 8,300 entries spanning the entire world, including some 2,000 just from France.

Seventy-eight films from fifty-two countries will be shown in the International Competition.

The Lab Competition will host twenty-five films from twenty-three countries.

And fifty-six French films, including ten international co-productions, make up the National Competition.

In conjunction with the Festival, the 38th Short Film Market, a stand-out, one-of-a-kind gathering, will be held from 30th January through 3rd February 2023.

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

The International Competition is a space where the different approaches that make up the richness of global short film meet and mingle. In 2023, short films ranging from three to thirty-three minutes in length offer us a look at dozens of stories, hundreds of lives, both real and fictional, from the fifty-two countries represented. Beyond escapism and culture-shock, there is a lot of emphasis on returning and finding again, sprinkled with one indispensable ingredient for any good selection: love stories beyond borders.

78 films selected from 52 countries among 6353 inscriptions.

  • 61 fiction films
  • 9 documentary films
  • 8 animated films
  • 16 coproductions

NATIONAL COMPETITION

This year, the National Competition offers fifty-six films that will take us far far away from the daily grind, from Manila to Boston with stops in Bogotá, London and even… the cosmos! The journey will be both dense and internal; we’ll meet many people searching for meaning at critical moments of their existence, and at the end of the day, outcasts will have their say.

  • 56 films selected among 1967
  • 53 fiction films, including 7 animated films
  • 3 documentary films
  • 10 international coproductions
  • 26 first films

LAB COMPETITION

The Lab Competition, where we jostle to discover explosive works that offer new forms of narration. We explore the paradox of total darkness from the lights of Tokyo to the jungles of Borneo and its ancestral creatures, with a stop in the depths of the dark web.

  • 25 films selected
  • 23 countries
  • 10 documentary films
  • 7 fiction films
  • 5 animated films

MEETINGS WITH DIRECTORS

The festival offers to meet and discuss with some directors for special shared moments.

OPEN MIC SESSIONS

Those special sessions consist of a screening followed by a shared moment with the directors.

The open mic sessions will be held from Sunday 29 to Saturday 4 in the Salle des Possibles for every national, international and lab sessions.

More information here.

A CONVERSATION WITH SALLY POTTER

The British director, who has over forty international awards to her name, will honor us by participating in a public engagement, in French, with audience members in Clermont-Ferrand.

The talk will take place the day after the screening of her latest short film Look At Me (with Javier Bardem and Chris Rock), specially included as a part of the Festival’s opening ceremonies.

The Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival is the most important short film event in the world. Put together by the organization Sauve qui peut le court métrage, the 45th Festival (and its corresponding short film market) will be held from 27 January to 4 February 2023. Come and discover masterpieces of animation, comedies, films on contemporary reality, genre films, student projects from the best schools in the world, and documentaries from across the globe.

Short films will once again be shown in all their splendor and diversity in Auvergne in the dead of winter.

December 9, 2022 /  Late Deadline
December 31, 2022 /  Extended Deadline

Cindy Di Xin Has Found Her Voice

China native Cindy Di Xin is an award-winning filmmaker who has written and directed six short films. She earned master’s degrees in film production with an emphasis in directing from Chapman University in Orange County, California and The School of Visual Arts in New York City. Over the past three years, Cindy has been nominated and awarded at seventeen film festivals, including several Academy Award-qualifying festivals. In her films, she enjoys exploring family and multi-cultural dynamics from her unique, bi-cultural female perspective.

Cindy Di Xin

Cindy recently received the best director award at the IMDB qualified, Austin International Art Festival for her latest short Voiceless.

Voiceless is the sensational emotional journey of a high school student who admires her art teacher but has tragic experiences with her.  Cindy’s goal with this film was to support and comfort the victims of sexual assault.

She comments, “This main character simply experiences her tragedy, just like one of the victims in our own lives. I want to use these 15 minutes to help my audience who are going through similar things feel less alone.”

Voiceless

Voiceless will screen at the New Jersey Film Festival on February 7, 2023, both in person and online.

Her other film currently on the festival circuit The day, at the Beach recently received the LA Film Festival’s awards for best director, best drama and best actor.

In the coming-of-age drama short, a teenage girl explores her family issues and how she must mature in light of what happened to her and her parents.

The day, at the Beach

Cindy explains, “Growing up is always painful and uncomfortable. The reality or outcome is not always what we want, as this movie has demonstrated, and that is one aspect of growing up. We must adjust to losing people's love, care, and attention in our lives.”

And as we prepare for awards season 2023, we asked Cindy what her acceptance speech would be for these recent successes.  Her reply follows,

I would love to thank all of my crew, friends, and family. I couldn't have made these beautiful and fascinating pieces without their support and help. I am so glad that people have found some connections in my films and have given me all of their recognition and likes. These films are extremely important to me, and I am grateful to everyone who has assisted and supported me. I wish more and more people can see my works in the future. Thank you so much.

What’s on the horizon for the talented young director? She’s currently writing her first feature film script based on The day, at the Beach.

The day, at the Beach

She adds,  “I would also like to create another short family drama about an Asian immigrant family in the United States. Besides this, I hope to help other people to create and tell their stories. I hope we can hear more true voices from young filmmakers!”

Third Eye, 2022, 19, 03: Asian Film Foundation awards Sudhir Nandgaonkar the Satyajit Ray prize

Sudhir Nandgaonkar worked tirelessly, all his life, for the cultural heritage of cinema. He reached out far and wide, propagating this culture, and played a key role in getting the local Marathi-speaking cinegoers of Mumbai and its suburbs to watch and appreciate world cinema, and discuss and debate it too. Towards this end, his Prabhat Chitra Mandal Film Society served the cause extremely well, by bringing in people from related fields like theatre, painting and music to enjoy and imbibe the new medium. He familiarised them with classic international cinema that was devoid of Hollywood.

A competent administrator, Sudhir Nandgaonkar has been associated with Prabhat, Mumbai’s oldest film Society, the Federation of Film Societies of India and FIPRESCI, the International Council of Film Journalists, in top management capacities.

Of course, his unparalleled work in the Third Eye Asian Film Festival and MAMI’s Mumbai Film Festival speaks for itself. In a digital world, where films can be watched on various media, to organise and keep relevant a live event like the Third Eye Asian Film Festival is no mean achievement. No wonder he has been honoured with the Satyajit Ray Prize for 2022.

Sudhir is not in the best of health, and I wish him a speedy recovery.

Third Eye, 2022, 19, 04: Asian Film Festival screens five Gujarati Films, including Hellaro

In a specially curated package, the Thirst Eye Asian Film Festival has screened five Gujarati films. Film archiver and film culture activist Subhash Chheda, a friend of mine, has curated the package. For those who missed it at other festivals, the primary attraction would have been the Award wiNational nning Hellaro, directed by Abhishek Shah. The other films are Dhad (Paresh Naik), Reva (Rahul Bhole and Vineet Kanojia), 21st Tiffin (Vijaygiri Bawa) and Aa Chhe Maru Gaam (long documenarty by Gopi Desai).

Set in 1975, in a village called Samarpura, in the Kutchh region of Gujarat, Hellaro is a film about the lagging behind of women when it comes to social, political, financial and cultural issues. A society that worships women as devis (goddesses) also exploits them and denies them their basic human rights. It deservedly won the National Award.

A still from Dhad

Dhad, and Aa Chhe Maru Gaam, by actress-director Gopi Desai, were the

Interaction at the screening of Aa Chhe Maru Gaam

films I missed due to other, more pressing engagements. Reva turned out to be a kind of treasure hunt, with clues dropped at five different places. In the process, it sought to glorify the river Narmada, which is also known as Reva in some parts of Gujarat. The treatment being too formulaic, I managed to watch it only till the halfway mark. Based on what I saw, I would say that it is passable fare, at best, and can be avoided. You will not miss much. 21st Tiffin, on the other hand, is a thoroughly watchable film, with strong content, but tacky technical parameters.

On location with the director and main cast of 21st Tiffin

An Ahmedabad woman obsessed, with cooking, sends tiffins (lunch-boxes) to nearby places for mainly students and young employees to get a taste of home-made food. She has a daughter who wants to have no part of her mother’s daily routine, but is forced to, because she is on college vacation. Her husband plays on the stock market and there is very little exchange between husband and wife. Her only soul-mate is a neighbour, who comes in every afternoon for a couple of hours and chats with her. So far, she is sending 20 tiffins a day. And then a young employee, on an internship posting to Ahmedabad sees his friends savouring the food coming in tiffins. When invited to do so, he tastes the food, and goes completely gaga over it. Now he wants to order a tiffin for himself too, from the same lady. But the lady-cook is unwilling to send the 21st Tiffin, hence the title. A good example where below par camera-work, editing and colours do not interfere with the narrative. This one can surely be watched.

The Myrtle Beach International Film Festival
April 18 – 22, 2023

December 31, 2022 /  Extended Deadline
