9th Forum Expanded What Do We Know When We Know Where Something Is?

52 works from 20 countries have been selected for the 9th Forum Expanded. The exhibition at ST. AGNES, the former parish hall whose church space is one of the key venues for this year’s Forum Expanded, is already being set up for the opening on February 5.

In one of the installations to be shown there, Clemens von Wedemeyer’s “Afterimage”, a camera feels its way through the props store at the Cinecittà studios in Rome. In the church tower, Malak Helmy’s sound recordings of a carrier pigeon that flew to previously important places on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast can be heard. Judith Hopf’s video piece observes the flooding of a neo-bourgeois family domicile that could be located anywhere, including in Kreuzberg, which forms the base for this year’s Forum Expanded alongside the Filmhaus at Potsdamer Platz. These are just three examples of works exploring the question of what we actually experience about the world when we localise something at a particular place.

The mainly mid-length film and video works that make up the programme will be shown individually at Arsenal, thus giving each of them the space they require and permitting extensive discussions. The video works can also be seen at fixed times at the Videolounge in the Berlinische Galerie – Museum of Modern Art, Photography and Architecture.

Two films celebrate their cinematic premiere on the big screen at the CineStar IMAX: Everything That Rises Must Converge by Omer Fast (Germany / USA) is a portrait of the day-to-day lives of four porn actors in split-screen. Yael Bartana’s Inferno (The Netherlands / USA) is a “historical preenactment” of striking impact – the 22-minute film will thus be shown by itself before being repeated daily at Arsenal 2.

At Delphi, we are presenting the film adaptation of a theatre production of Arnold Schönberg’s Pierrot Lunaire directed by Canadian Bruce LaBruce, who will be discussing the film together with lead actress Susanne Sachsse, conductor Premil Petroviç and Diedrich Diederichsen.

For the first time, Forum Expanded will also be showing works by Austrian artist Friedl vom Gröller, who has been shooting short films on 16mm for over 40 years that attempt to capture different moments and feelings. Film scholar Christa Blümlinger will be discussing vom Gröller’s work together with the director herself.

The installation “Fictions & Futures #1 – Happiness in the Abstract” by Minze Tummescheit and Arne Hector is being shown in the Arsenal Black Box and explores the trading of raw materials on the global stock market.

The question of “What Do We Know When We Know Where Something Is?” is also to be pursued in three events exploring production locations and the cinematic construction of place: Filmmaker and critic Mark Peranson (La última película, Mark Peranson and Raya Martin, Canada / Denmark / Mexico 2013) and artist and filmmaker Morgan Fisher (Standard Gauge, USA 1984) will be talking about the semantic charge currently attached to the increasing disappearance of 35mm film material and how this relates to the concept of both World and Structural Cinema.

“Cairo - The Still and The Moving” is the title of a work in progress presentation followed by a panel discussion where excerpts of The Vote will be shown, the portrait of four presidential candidates during the first election following the start of the revolution in Egypt. Directors Hanan Abdalla and Cressida Trew (cinematographer of Forum special screening The Square) will discuss their work with Viola Shafik, whose film Scent of Revolution is also showing at the Forum as a special screening.

Stephan Geene’s new film umsonst paints a picture of Kreuzkölln, the Berlin neighbourhood that has emerged from Kreuzberg over the last 25 years following the fall of the Berlin Wall and has been subject to a generational change in the process. The film was produced in a collective context located in the same district, whose members include Karolin Meunier, producer Caroline Kirberg and cameraman Volker Sattel, both of whom will be taking part in the discussion.

The previously announced presentation of films and film fragments by queer icon Jack Smith made available by the Jack Smith Archive of the Gladstone Gallery, NY and Brussels, is showing at Hebbel am Ufer (HAU 1) and the Berlinische Galerie under the title of “Jack Smith: Beyond the Rented World”. Musician John Zorn will be playing records from Jack Smith’s collection at HAU 1 to accompany several films from the programme. Marc Siegel is chairing the discussions to be held with Jerry Tartaglia, who was responsible for restoring the films, John Zorn as well as Ken and Flo Jacobs, who are not just mere contemporaries of Jack Smith in this context: 3-D films by Ken Jacobs are also showing in the programme of both Forum and Forum Expanded, connecting early cinema to the cinema of the avant-garde and that of today.

Forum Expanded is also presenting the two-day conference “Think:Film No. 2 – What Do We Know When We Know Where Something Is?” in collaboration with the Allianz Cultural Foundation. Gallery, museum, theatre or cinema – the discussion surrounding the relationship between film and the other arts has largely revolved around concepts of space and location. Where does a film come from and where is it shown? This question is relevant both with respect to artistic context as well as nation state attributions, even though finding an answer is hardly possible at a time of hybrid forms, transnational collaborations and historical and political shifts. The following participants have already confirmed their attendance: Vinzenz Hediger, Tarek Elhaid, Jahman Oladejo Anikulapo, Viola Shafik, Ute Holl, Rania Stephan, Laura Mulvey, Gertrud Koch, Gregor Stemmrich, Henriette Huldisch, Jörn Schaffaf, Heinz Emigholz, Ala Younis, Heba Amin, Malak Helmy, Marc Siegel, Roy Dib, Renate Lorenz, Bouchra Khalili, Dennis Lim, Irit Neidhardt, Maha Maamoun and Tamer El Said.

Finally, the first ever Think:Film Award will be presented during Forum Expanded. The jury consists of Mohamed Beshir, Marcel Schwerin and Ala Younis.

Forum Expanded is curated by Stefanie Schulte Strathaus (head curator), Anselm Franke, Nanna Heidenreich, Bettina Steinbrügge and Ulrich Ziemons.

In 2014, the Berlinale’s “Flying Red Carpet” will again travel through the city and stopover for an evening at each of the following seven arthouse cinemas: Eva Lichtspiele (Wilmersdorf), Toni & Tonino (Weißensee), Adria (Steglitz), filmkunst 66 (Charlottenburg), Passage (Neukölln), Thalia Programm Kino (Potsdam-Babelsberg), and Eiszeit Kino (Kreuzberg).

Whether a 100-year-old movie theatre, film palace or small rear house studio, with the “Berlinale Goes Kiez” series the cinema as site takes centre stage at the Festival. Local cinemas are an integral part of Berlin’s cultural history and are deeply rooted in their neighbourhoods today.

From Saturday, February 8 to Friday, February 14, 2014, each of the above-mentioned arthouse cinemas will serve as an additional Festival venue for one evening and show films selected from the Berlinale programme. As in the past, many of the film teams will present their works in person at these local screenings. Afterwards they will answer questions and discuss their films with the audience. Besides these teams, cinema patrons will be on hand to welcome the public to the small Red Carpet: renowned film personalities will act as patrons at these locations and tell about their personal connections to them, and so support the cultural activities at their favourite neighbourhood cinemas.

“With the ‘Berlinale Goes Kiez’ special series, the Berlinale would like to honour arthouse cinemas and their audiences in this city,” says Festival Director Dieter Kosslick.

How Strange to Be Named Federico! by Ettore Scola

All eyes are on Italian cinema this year as Paolo Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty not only wins the 2014 Golden Globe for best foreign language film, but also gets an Oscar nomination in the best foreign picture category. Cinema Made In Italy will keep Italian cinema firmly in the spotlight when this annual five day event makes a welcome return to the Ciné Lumière in South Kensington. This year’s Italian encounter will take place from 5 - 9 March, and once again, lovers of Italian cinema will have a chance to catch the latest cinematic gems Italy has to offer.

As in previous years audiences can look forward to another enthralling programme, as well as a series of lively and thought-provoking Q+A sessions with directors and actors alike. One of this year’s hot tickets will undoubtedly be How Strange to Be Named Federico!, Ettore Scola's affectionate tribute to Federico Fellini, which he came out of retirement to make. Released in Italy in autumn 2013 to mark the 20th anniversary of Fellini’s death, this film is a fascinating trip down memory lane, recalling the years shared by these two Maestros of cinema.

Other highlights in the programme include Roberto Andò’s Viva La Libertà starring Toni Servillo and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi; Matteo Oleotto’s Zoran,My Nephew The Idiot, winner of the Critics’ Week Public’s Prize at the 2013 Venice International Film Festival; and The Fifth Wheel, directed by Giovanni Veronesi, and starring Elio Germano, one of Italy’s finest young actors who won the Best Actor award at the 2010 Cannes International Film Festival for his role in La Nostra Vita. For a full list of titles please see below.

Cinema Made In Italy is organised by Istituto Luce - Cinecittà’s promotional department in Rome (Filmitalia), and the Italian Cultural Institute in London. This year’s line-up includes ten feature films and one documentary: eight titles chosen by Titta Fiore, film critic and Head of Arts and Culture for the Italian daily newspaper Il Mattino, and a special selection of two films by Adrian Wootton, CEO of Film London. Movie review: 12 years a slave
12 YEARS A SLAVE -Starring: Chiwetel Ejiofor,Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong'o,Paul Giamatti,Alfre Woodard, Taran Killam, Paul Dano, Sarah Paulson  Director: Steve McQueen III   Slavery is as old as the hills. The Romans, Assyrian,Babylonians,Egyptians, Jews, Arabs, Scandinavians all kept slaves. In the Far East, the Japanese didn't lag behind. Nor did India with bonded labour. Slavery in America's Deep South was unique  in its use of slaves as unfree labour producing  cotton and sugar on plantations for export.  Profits apart, slavery catered to the soul sickness of racist, sadistic  slave-owning "Christians" ( Michael Fassbender and  Sarah Paulson )  who quote from the Old Testament  to justify ownership and brutal treatment of their slaves in this  adaptation of a true story based on the little known memoirs of  Solomon Northrup who became a hero of the abolitionist movement.

The time has come to raid the closets and prepare the most glamorous of frocks, because the 21st Annual Mardi Gras Film Festival is just two weeks away, kicking off on Thursday 13th of February at Event Cinemas on George Street, Sydney.

Sure to put the "fabulous" into film, Queer Screen will be celebrating their 21st anniversary in style with the launch of a pop-up film festival bar that will serve as the hub of Queer entertainment this February.

The doors will swing open with all the romance of the Valentine's Day "Traffic Light Party" on Friday, February 14th with DJs George Rousso and Sveta.

The party will continue each night from 6pm for 10 days of the Festival. Inspiring performances from the crème of Sydney’s Queer scene, DJ sets from the likes of Kitty Glitter and Mark Alsop, special events in partnership with community groups, free talks and of course a bar overflowing with the only the finest of drinks.

But not all this excitement is kept to the nighttime. On Wednesday, 19th February, the bar will open up early for afternoon tea with Aunty Mavis following the screening of Gerontophilia and on Sunday, 23rd February, the final day of the festival and pop-up bar will kick off from noon with Harbour City Bears social drinks with djmikeyb.

That's but a taste of the 10 days of fun and frivolity that the Mardi Gras Film Festival pop-up bar will have to offer. For full details of the pop-bar program head to www.queerscreen.org.au/mgff/events/

Sitting at Event Cinemas on George St alongside the film festival itself, everyone is invited to come along after work, before a movie or after a late night screening to ensure this oh-you've-grown-up-so-fast 21 year old is given the party she deserves.

You don't want to miss this.

Tickets for Mardi Gras Film Festival films can be purchased at www.queerscreen.org.au

Garrett Brown at the 67th Festival del film Locarno

The recipient of the Vision Award will be Oscar prize-winner Garrett Brown, creator of the revolutionary Steadicam®.

Following the award to special effects maestro Douglas Trumbull in 2013, the Festival continues its dedication to distinguishing those who, through their inspirations and technical knowledge, have left their mark on film history. The 67th edition of the Festival will pay tribute to the American cameraman Garrett Brown, who, in the 1970s created and perfected the famous Steadicam – the camera support that enables shooting movement fluidly while retaining a stabilized image – and thus revolutionized thinking about and the practice of cinematography.

Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian comments: “It is both an honor and a pleasure to welcome Garrett Brown to Locarno; he is one of those artists who has enabled cinema to make a giant step forward, and for reality to be explored in a new way. Both fluid and muscular, nimble and precise, his Steadicam has made its mark on the horizons of cinema from the 70s to this very day, and in its various patented versions seems an essential tool when both movement and definition are required. Yet choosing Garrett Brown as the recipient of this award is not only to pay tribute to an invention but also to the man behind it. A brilliant cameraman, Brown’s filmography contains so many titles that constitute much of the cinematic heritage of the last forty years.

Garrett Brown – who won an Oscar in 1977 for the invention of Steadicam – was involved with such classics as Rocky (1976), Star Wars – Return of the Jedi (1983), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), Philadelphia (1993), as well as Stanley Kubrick’s TheShining (1980), a film designed to fully exploit the artistic potential of the Steadicam: those images in the labyrinthine corridors of the Overlook Hotel remain engraved in the collective memory.

The major directors with whom Brown has developed close working relationships include Warren Beatty, Jonathan Demme, Frank Oz, John Schlesinger, George Miller, Sydney Pollack, Martin Scorsese, as well as Stanley Kubrick and Steven Spielberg.

His experimentation did not stop with the invention of the first Steadicam, and Brown now holds 50 patents for devices that include the Steadicam Merlin – a miniature version for camcorders – and numerous award-winning cameras for sporting events, such as the agile wire-suspended Skycam.

The 67th edition of the Festival del film Locarno will take place 6 – 16 August, 2014.
