Winners Eligible for Oscars®

All Student Academy Award® winners become eligible for Oscars® consideration.  The entry deadline for submissions is Friday, June 1.

The U.S. competition is open to all full-time undergraduate and graduate students whose films are made within the curricular structure of an eligible accredited institution.

The international competition allows two options for students at international film schools to submit their films.  In addition to CILECT-member schools submitting one student film per international film school category, international students may now enter films that qualify through film festivals recognized by the Student Academy Awards Executive Committee.

For the fourth year, students are asked to submit their films online using FilmFreeway, a widely used festival and competition platform.  Complete rules, the SAA qualifying film festivals list and a link to the online submission platform are available at www.oscars.org/saa

The 45th Student Academy Awards presentation will be held on Thursday, October 11, at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Past winners have gone on to receive 59 Oscar nominations and have won or shared 10 awards.  This year, two 2017 Student Academy Award winners received Oscar nominations in the Live Action Short Film category: Katja Benrath, a Gold Medal winner in the Narrative (International Film Schools) category for “Watu Wote/All of Us,” and Kevin Wilson, Jr., a Gold Medal winner in the Narrative (Domestic Film Schools) category for “My Nephew Emmett.”  Past Student Academy Award winners include filmmakers Patricia Cardoso, Pete Docter, Cary Fukunaga, John Lasseter, Spike Lee, Trey Parker, Patricia Riggen and Robert Zemeckis.

In 1972, the Academy established the Student Academy Awards to provide a platform for emerging global filmmakers by creating opportunities within the industry to showcase their work.

- The first edition of the event gathers together in Tenerife more than 250 professionals of the Ibero-american animation on April 6th and 7th.

- The ceremony awards will give nine awards to the best of Ibero-american production in 2016 and 2017.

- The Coproduction Forum and the International Animation Congress bring the industry and the academy together.

Tenerife, April 4th 2018. This Friday April 6th and Saturday 7th, the Ibero-American animation gathers together around the Quirino Awards, that take place in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Spain), a pioneer event in the region that searchs to value and create bonds between the animation production in the areas of Latin-America, Portugal and Spain.

The organization proposes an intense program with three main activities: the ceremony award, that will take place on April 7th in the Auditorium of Tenerife and will give nine awards to the best animation of the region –the finalist awards can be checked here-; the Coproduction Forum, professional space oriented to stablish networks between the industries at both sides of the Athlantic; and the International Animation Congress, that aims to generate a space for academic and profesional exchange about animation.

Twenty-four works from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Spain, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay opt for the Quirino Awards in its nine categories. Spain, with 12 finalist works, is the most represented territory, followed by Mexico and Colombia, with 5 each of them. Among the selected works are titles held internationally, such as the feature film "Tad Jones 2", "The Book of Lila" (Colombia / Uruguay) and "Ana and Bruno" (Mexico); the series "Paper Port" (Chile / Brazil / Colombia / Argentina) or "Pocoyó" (Spain), and the short films "Cerulia" (Mexico) or "Decorado" (Spain), among others.

Several recognized directors of animation appear in the list of candidates for the awards, such as Juan Pablo Zaramella, Sofía Carrillo or Alberto Vázquez; and with the aim of boosting the career of new talent, the Quirino Awards also recognize the best school work, a category where we find the short films "We Are the Immigrants" (Colombia / United States), "A day in the park" (Spain) and "Tántalo" (Argentina).

Meeting point for professionals of the sector

Before the award ceremony, during days 6th and 7th, two other meeting activities will be held at the Auditorium of Tenerife, the main venue for this first edition. In the Co-production Forum several networking zones are proposed, such as B2B co-production meetings, meeting corners and industry presentations by professional associations of Argentina (Animar Cluster, APA), Brazil (ABCA), Chile (Animachi), Colombia (GEMA), Ecuador (Guild of Animators), Spain (Diboos, SAVE), Mexico (ACDMX), Peru (Peru Animation) and Portugal (Casa da Animaçao), among others.

Likewise, the organization has convened a working table between the different associations and the Ibermedia Program, with the aim of analyzing the needs of the Ibero-American animation sector and the possibilities to be implemented by the entity to stimulate audiovisual co-production in the Ibero-American space.

For its part, at the International Congress of Ibero-American Animation, eleven communications from Brazil, Denmark, Ecuador, Spain, Mexico and Portugal will be presented; and will have the special participation of the historian of animation, teacher and writer Giannalberto Bendazzi; as well as that of María Laura Ruggiero, Argentine filmmaker, audiovisual designer and storyteller with specialization in experiential and transmedia narratives.

In addition, a working table will be held with representatives of universities, schools and training centers in Latin America. Among the confirmed are The Animation Workshop, SAE Institute Mexico, Polytechnic University of Valencia, University San Francisco de Quito, University of Aveiro, Anhembi Morumbi University, Federal University of Juiz de Fora, Barreira Art + Design, University of La Laguna, University Nacional de Tierra de Fuego, Lightbox Academy and U-tad, among others.

During these days there will also be several screenings of the finalist works in the TEA, Tenerife Espacio de las Artes. To highlight the screening of the documentary "Without a trace (life and work of Quirino Cristiani)" by Diego Kartaszewicz.

Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards

The awards are named in tribute of the creator of the first feature length animation film in history, the Italian-Argentinean Quirino Cristiani, who in 1917 directed “El Apóstol”; this Argentinean production, shot in 35mm, used 58,000 drawings done by hand along with a number of models representing public buildings and streets in Buenos Aires city.

The main sponsor of the Quirino Awards is the Tourism department of Tenerife, reflecting the determined commitment that is being made for the animation for years on the island, not only with these awards but with the presence in the main events and markets, attracting new companies, as well as with the support to the flourishing local sector.

In addition, the initiative has the sponsorship of the City of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA) and Iberia Express; the collaboration of ICAA, Ibermedia Program, AECID, Tenerife Auditorium, Universidad de la Laguna and RTVE; and the support of DIBOOS, SAVE, Pixelatl, 3D Wire, TLP Tenerife, Annecy Festival, Barreira Arte + Diseño and Universitat Politécnica de Valencia, as well as the support of the associations: APA - Association of Animation Production Companies of Córdoba Argentina; ANIMAR CLUSTER - Argentinian Animation Cluster & VFX; ABCA - Associação Brasileira de Cinema de Animação; Animachi Chile; GEMA Colombia - Group of Animation Entrepreneurs; Guild of Animators of Ecuador; ACDMX - Association of Digital Creatives of Mexico; and Casa da Animaçao of Portugal.

#OtherWorlds2017 Award Winners

Other Worlds Austin wrapped up its successful fourth season by announcing the 2017 winners for its Best Feature Audience Award, Best Short Audience Award (sponsored by Film Colossus), the Mary Shelley Award, the Dan O’Bannon Filmmaker Award, the Cthulhies awards, and the Screenplay Contest.

Nearly 300 films were submitted to the fourth-year festival. A passionate and engaged audience ultimately had to choose from 15 features and 28 shorts, all Austin premieres.

The Best Feature Audience Award winner for OtherWorlds2017 is the Texas premiere of GNAW, written by Jim Brennnan, Haylar Garcia, and Kathryn Gould, and directed by Haylar Garcia. This supernatural horror film follows Jennifer Conrad, a small-town girl starting over in the big city. Fleeing an abusive relationship, all she wants is a chance to begin again. But it is hard to start over when something is eating you while you sleep… one painful bite at a time.

The Best Short Audience Award winner for OtherWorlds2017 (sponsored by Film Colossus) is EINSTEIN-ROSEN, written and directed by Olga Osorio. In the summer of 1982, Teo claims he has found a wormhole. His brother Oscar does not believe him… at least not for now.

Under Worlds Austin, in its third year, is the Horror sidebar to the overall Other Words festival.

“As for the audience’s selection of Best Short,” Fonté continues, “EINSTEIN-ROSEN captures the pure joy of a child’s wonderment with science as well as classic sibling rivalry.”

The Best Feature Audience Award 2017 winner received a $500 cash prize. The Best Short Audience Award 2017 winner received a $250 cash prize.

Midnight Sun, Review: XPeriencing XP from Windows

Midnight%20Sun%2C%20Poster.jpg
Midnight Sun, Review: XPeriencing XP from Windows It’s not about Norway or the North Pole, where the sun shines at midnight. Rather, it is about a girl who suffers from a disease in which exposure to the sun, even for a few seconds, can prove fatal. Midnight Sun comes from a lineage that is populated by names like Anand, Love Story, Ankhiyon Ke Jharaokhon Se, Kaash and Paa. Then, there were toned down variants like Meri Surat Teri Aankhen, Dosti, Children of a Lesser God, Koshish, Taare...

Peter Rabbit, Review: Fertile comedy

Peter%20Rabbit%2C%20poster.jpg
Peter Rabbit, Review: Fertile comedy Peter Rabbit is an irreverent, computer-generated (largely) animated comedy, based on a 125 year-old story that has been updated to present times. Most of the story undulates as a never-ending, recurring chase, and battle of wits, between the live action hero and the cartoon animals, in Tom and Jerry style. While it should appeal naturally to kids in the age-group of 3-12, some adult-ish content makes it more relevant to the 13-18 bracket. Adults, who are ...

Baaghi%202%2C%20Poster.jpg
Baaghi 2, Review: Do we still need an army? He’s an army-man and he’s angry, first at the stone-pelters in Kashmir, and then at the drug-peddlers in Goa. In the former case, he has a bee in his bonnet. Rather, he ties a local to the bonnet on his Jeep, using him as a human shield, and drives through, teaching the militants a lesson. This earns a serious reprimand from his superior officers and a strenuous survival punishment as well. In the latter case, he conducts a master class ...

USA October 2017 - 83 minutes

WORLD PREMIERING AT SANTA BARBARA FESTIVAL - THE HOME OF JEFF BRIDGES

Academy Award Winner, Jeff Bridges presents this beautifully photographed tour de force of original thinking on who we are and the environmental challenges we face. Jeff, alongside prominent scientists and authors, weave evolution, emergence, entropy, dark ecology, and what some are calling the end of nature, into a story that helps us understand our place among the species of Earth’s household. The film upends our way of thinking and provides original insights into our subconscious motivations, the unintended consequences, what to do about our fossil slaves, and how our fundamental animal nature influences our future as Humankind.

Every evening the city will become alive with concerts and events leading up to the Grand Finale scheduled for Saturday 14 April starting at 7 p.m., when all sets designs and roving performances will take place at the same time from the afternoon until late at night. On Saturday night, Effetto Cinema Notte will host a Main Event dedicated to the stars of the Film Festival co-produced by the LFFEC and by the establishments located in the theme area. A Technical Jury will award the Effetto Cinema Notte Best Costumes Prize to the staff of the venue staging the performance most in line with the assigned film.

For the first time, this year Lucca Film Festival and Europa Cinema exhibitions will be open until midnight with free admission to Palazzo Ducale and the Ragghianti Foundation.

The Exhibitions

This year, Lucca Film Festival e Europa Cinema host two exhibits. The first, Luchino Visconti. In Search of Lost Time. History of a Never-Made Film is curated by Alessandro Romanini and by set designer Francesco Frigeri, produced by the Experimental Center of Cinematography in Rome and will be hosted at the Palazzo Ducale in Lucca (17 March-21 April 2018). After last year’s tribute to Federico Fellini and The Journey of G. Mastorna hosted at the GAMC in Viareggio, the students of the Department of Stage Design headed by Francesco Frigeri and those led by costume designer Maurizio Millenotti have drafted over 40 executive storyboards – that is to say ready to be transformed in a film set – and designed a similar number of costumes. Aided by a wide range of original documents, the goal is to recreate a journey that illustrates Visconti’s dream of transposing on film Marcel Proust’s À la recherche du temps perdu, a pharaonic project, which had to be abandoned due to lack of funding.

The second exhibit entitled Art Cinema – An Unprecedented Dialogue. Behind the scenes of Sky Art Cinema curated by SKY in collaboration with Alessandro Romanini will be on display at the Fondazione Ragghianti, (23 March-23 April 2018). Over 40 large-format photographs guide the visitors through a journey to discover the “dream machine” in all of its aspects: the sets, the actors in the various stages of filming, film and art professionals at work, the Directors of Photography, the Studios of Cinecittà in Rome, set preparation from the initial sketch to the making of it, the process of costume design and, last but not least, the processes of the new 3D "immersive" technologies. Viewers will be able to enjoy never-seen-before stills of the masterpieces of Michelangelo, Raphael and Caravaggio, of the Vatican Museums and breathtaking aerial views of the Papal Basilicas (filmed for the first time close-up thanks to a special permit granted by the Holy See) and of The Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

From 19 to 22 April, Lucca Film Festival e Europa Cinema’s program will be further enriched thanks to the screening all the art films produced by Sky in collaboration with Magnitudo Film. The art film screening will open with Caravaggio - the Soul and the Blood at the Monumental Complex of San Micheletto and is promoted by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca in collaboration with the Film Festival and with the Fondazione Ragghianti. The documentary on Caravaggio premiered in cinema halls last February and in Italy ranked as the most seen art documentary counting over 130.000 viewers. On 19 April, Cosetta Lagani, Director of Sky Art Cinema, film director Jesus Garces Lambert and screenwriter Laura Allievi will introduce this unrivalled, emotional and visceral journey into the life, works and torments of Michelangelo Merisi, Caravaggio. Art film screenings will continue on the following days in the nearby San Franceschetto with previous Sky Art Cinema blockbusters that have been distributed in 60 countries: Vatican Museums – Between Heaven and Earth, Saint Peter and the Papal Basilicas (20 April), Florence and the Uffizi Gallery. A journey into the heart of the Renaissance (21 April) and Raphael – Prince of the Arts (22 April).

This year, the exhibition section of the 2018 Lucca Film Festival is complemented by a series of screenings dedicated to the intense and multifaceted relationship between cinema and visual art. To celebrate the European Year of Cultural Heritage, a special focus is dedicated to the use of the camera as a means to illustrate artistic creation and enhance cultural heritage will take place at the same time as SKY Art Cinema’s retrospective from 19 to 22 April. Documentaries range from those dedicated to one of the most famous international video artists Bill Viola, to Archi-star Bjarke Ingels, to the history of Land Art and to the restoration of the Reggia di Carditello to documentaries focusing on the superstar of street art Banksy and on a poetic journey from China and Amsterdam to see Van Gogh.

Images that sound good

In collaboration with Lucca Summer Festival, this section takes a closer look at the relationship between cinema and music, thanks to the presence of Anton Corbijn as a special guest at the Lucca Film Festival. Anton Corbijn is the author of countless award-winning video clips, of films and of photos that portray the music world. An exhaustive retrospective will celebrate his career. Works that will be screened in this section include two films dedicated to two protagonists of the female rock scene, Marianne Faithfull (directed by the French actress and director Sardine Bonnaire) and the one dedicated to Andy Warhol’s and Velvet Underground’s muse, Nico, directed by Susanna Nicchiarelli who was a guest in a previous edition of the Lucca festival. Last but not least, “To Stay Alive: A Method”: a film that brings together  cinema, music and literature, featuring the controversial French writer Michel Houellebecq and rock music’s iguana Iggy Pop.

SFF%20TEASER.png

The 65th Sydney Film Festival today announced a sneak peek of this year’s essential viewing: 26 new films to be featured in this year’s 6-17 June event, as well as a new Festival location: HOYTS Entertainment Quarter.

The announcement is in advance of the full program launch on Wednesday 9 May.

“65 years young, Sydney Film Festival celebrates a spectacular history of storytelling with another 200+ feature films and documentaries, beginning with these first 26 cinematic gems,” Sydney Film Festival Director Nashen Moodley said.

“Since 1954 Sydney Film Festival has presented over 9,000 films to Australian audiences. The Festival may have reached a stately age, but it continues every year to deliver the most cutting edge and provocative voices in international cinema.

“In 2018's sneak peek of the program, there are features and documentaries from Argentina to the Arctic Circle. From the war zone of Kabul, where young men risk arrest for their love of rock music, to the revolutionary creativity of punk icon Vivienne Westwood, these unique and poignant films share stories of freedom, identity and passion from across the globe.

“The 2018 Sydney Film Festival is once again proud to kick-start exciting conversations and showcase powerful ideas and bold statements that open eyes, expand horizons and enrich the lives of our audiences and community,” he said.

Leading the pack…

Leading the titles announced today is Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist. The film is a fascinating profile of revolutionary fashion designer and punk icon Vivienne Westwood from UK model-turned-filmmaker Lorna Tucker.

Also topping the list is the winner of Venice Film Festival’s 2017 Grand Jury Prize, Foxtrot, from award-winning Israeli director Samuel Maoz; and 2018 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Award winner, The Miseducation of Cameron Post, featuring rising stars Chloë Grace Moretz (Carrie), Sasha Lane  (American Honey) and Forrest Goodluck(The Revenant).

Two Oscar inners will also present their latest works: Sebastián Lelio’s (A Fantastic Woman, SFF 2017) Disobedience starring Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams, and Debra Granik’s (Winter’s Bone) Leave No Trace featuring young New Zealand actress Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie.

Bold psychosexual thriller, Piercing, starring Australian actress Mia Wasikowska (Madame Bovary, SFF 2015), and spine-tingling British chiller Ghost Stories starring Martin Freeman (The Hobbit), kicks off the 2018 Festival’s Freak Me Out program.

Anchor and Hope also delivers more star power with Natalia Tena (Harry Potter) and Oona Chaplin (Game of Thrones) alongside her mother, Golden Globe nominee Geraldine Chaplin (Chaplin), in the second feature by award-winning Spanish director Carlos Marques-Marcet (10.000 Km).

New films from Australia

Closer to home, Australian journalist Travis Beard’s fascinating documentary RocKabul examines Afghanistan’s first metal band District Unknown, and I Used to be Normal: A Boyband Fangirl Story, is a coming-of-age documentary about the intense love of boybands, from The Beatles to One Direction.

Maya the Bee: The Honey Games is a new family adventure – voiced by an all-star Australian cast including Richard Roxburgh, The Umbilical Brothers’ Dave Collins and Shane Dundas, and Justine Clarke (ABC’s Play School) – from Australian animation veteran Noel Cleary (Blinky Bill).

An exhilarating debut feature from Australian director Jason Raftopoulos, West of Sunshine, starring Damien Hill (Pawno) alongside his real life step-son Ty Perham, and Kat Stewart (Offspring), will also screen in 2018.

Big festival winners and nominees

Favourites selected from the international festival circuit include: Sundance 2018 Special Jury Prize winner, Genesis 2.0, a documentary following scientific efforts to resurrect the woolly mammoth in an Arctic spin on Jurassic Park; and Berlinale Silver Bear winner, Mug, from renowned Polish filmmaker Małgorzata Szumowska.

Also highly anticipated are Oscar-nominated films: The Breadwinner and The Insult. The Breadwinner was nominated for Best Animated Feature and produced by a team of Academy Award winners including Angelina Jolie and animation studio Cartoon Saloon (Song of the Sea – SFF 2015). Lebanese filmmaker Ziad Doueiri’s potent legal thriller The Insult was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Oscar.

Sundance Grand Jury Prize nominee American Animals stars a cast of young Hollywood talent including Evan Peters (American Horror Story) and Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk, The Killing of a Sacred Deer).

The brand-new digital restoration, from the National Film and Sound Archive, of iconic Australian Oscar nominated film My Brilliant Career (1979) – from acclaimed director Gillian Armstrong and featuring Judy Davis in her movie debut – will revive this multiple award winner for new audiences.

Outstanding documentaries

Sydney Film Festival’s documentary program will again deliver the most exciting true stories about people, places, enterprises and phenomena from Australia and around the globe.

The Festival opens a window into the lives of extraordinary young people, from Chef Flynn, about prodigy chef Flynn McGarry who became one of the world’s top chefs at just 13 years old, to students finding innovative ways to tackle the most complex environmental issues facing humanity today in Inventing Tomorrow.

A light is shone in dangerous places, from the murder that made true crime an American obsession in Cold Blooded: The Clutter Family Murders, to the life of a veteran Kurdish soldier deactivating landmines in Iraq using only a pen knife in The Deminer, to The Long Season, an intimate record of daily life for women in a Syrian refugee camp.

Quirky hits

The Festival also features heart-warming fly-on-the-wall glimpses into personal places, such as the family castle of Spanish director Gustavo Salmeron’s eccentric mother in Lots of Kids, A Monkey and A Castle. And the roly-poly lives of five guide puppies as they train for the ultimate canine career in Pick of the Litter– also screening in Sydney Film Festival’s brand new Screen Day Out program, developed for high school students.

Interracial love, religious cults, Thai high society, and an appetite for raw offal complete a preview of the Festival’s more avant-garde works, with classic noir Samui Song from Thai auteur Pen-ek Rataranuang (Last Life In the Universe).

New venue

In 2018 the Festival will bring films from the world’s top film festivals to venues across Sydney. For the first time the Festival will present a program of films at HOYTS Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park. The venue will feature specially selected line-up of family films, as well as Screenability, the platform for screen practitioners with disability.

The State Theatre, Dendy Opera Quays, Dendy Newtown, Event Cinemas George Street, Art Gallery of NSW, the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace Cremorne, Randwick Ritz, and Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre return as official Festival screening venues. An exciting virtual reality program will return to the Festival Hub at Sydney Town Hall premiering cutting edge VR experiences, many for the first time in Australia.

The full Sydney Film Festival program will be announced on Wednesday 9 May.
