Opening Night Film: Sun Dogs
Director: Jennifer Morrison
Presented by Lu and Sam Maslak

We are excited to announce our Opening Night Film, Sun Dogs, directed by Jennifer Morrison. You may recognize Jennifer from her acting work, most recently as the roll of Emma Swan in Once Upon a Time, she also starred in How I Met Your Mother and House, among many other roles. This is Jennifer's feature directing debut and we couldn't be more excited to open the festival with this fantastic film starring Allison Janney, Melissa Benoist, Michael Angarano, and Ed O'Neill.

In this dramedy, a young man determined to be a military hero, ends up on a misguided adventure with his family and new friend Tally, which leads him to the most unlikely realization of how he can courageously “save lives.”

Hichki, Review: Hitch key

Hichki%20review%20poster.jpg
Hichki, Review: Hitch key Protagonist Rani Mukerji plays a spunky woman with Tourette Syndrome*, who sets her mind on teaching as a profession. Rather ambitious, considering she bursts into tics, making funny, bark-like noises every 30 seconds or so. It is inspired by the life of American Brad Cohen, probably the most famous person with Tourette Syndrome. With no real stars, this come-back vehicle of actress Rani Mukerji, who took a break for about four years, post marriage to the Yash Raj Fi...

Baa Baaa Black Sheep, Review: Wolf in sheep’s clothing Director Vishwas Paandya is not serious. A confessional in the beginning dedicates Baa Baaa Black Sheep to the films he grew up on. He’s also asked his partner in crime (it’s a crime story), writer Sunjiv Puri, to strictly follow his brief. So, when the film was launched, in early 2015, they were probably referencing films of the 1980s-1990s. One character is named Charlie, in a tribute to the legendary comedian, who rul...

A sequel was taking shape since 2012, and Prey at Night saw light of day in 2018. Raja Abroadiya, Review: Staying home is a better option Both for the lead characters in the film, and potential viewers. If the film-makers had been warned in time to stay home themselves, the viewers would not have had to be given this warning of staying home, and would have been spared a film that has almost nothing to offer, the Miss India and Miss Diva connections of the two lead actresses notwithstanding. Okay, so there must be some audiences who like over the top buffoonery and will wat...

The film upends our way of thinking and provides original insights into our subconscious motivations, the unintended consequences, what to do about our fossil slaves, and how our fundamental animal nature influences our future as Humankind.

New York Sephardic Jewish Film Festival 2018

Though the New York Sephardic community is relatively small its film festival has been staged for the last 21 years presenting programs which promote the broad differentiated culture of  global Sephardic communities, emphasizing their history, tradition and the issues they face. The 2018 edition was held from March 5-15 at New York’s Center for Jewish History with a full schedule of cultural programs as well as feature and short films. The principal sponsor of the festival was the American Sephardic Federation with David Dangoor as the producer. Additional support was received from the Bweta Family Foundation, Maroccon agencies, the Consulate General of Mexico, Hotel 32/32 and the American Friends of Soroka Medical Center.

With many sold out events the audience reached about 2000  individuals this year with most coming from the Sephardic community encompassing all age and educational groups but also attracting  other religions and ethnicities. Compared to past editions, this year’s program featured new events each night.  As in most other film festivals, themes for the festival emerged when more than 100 productions were reviewed for the 2018 program for which 8 documentary features, 3 narrative features and 5 short films were selected. For the producer, Dangoor programming, each night is a challenge though the festival “is a dream that we wish would never end.”  For a niche film festival serving a small audience, the New York Sephardic film fest provides a comprehensive program. There is a Los Angeles week long Sephardic film festival focusing on a small number of films only and one in Portland with two days of screenings. In that context it is of interest that there are more than 60 Jewish film festivals in the United States and that the first streaming services focusing on Jewish and Israeli films have already emerged..

The New York Sephardic community is relatively small compared to the 1.1 million Jews estimated to reside in New York City in 2012.  In Manhattan there are about 36,000  Sephardic Jews. Some arrived in 1654 from Brazil and other refugees came from the Ottoman Empire and after 1948 from the Arab world. Growth of the New York Sephardic community is now taking place because of the exodus of Sephardic immigrants from France who decided to settle in the United States rather than Israel. They are faced with anti-Semitism by Muslims from the same countries that forced them to leave North Africa for France. Many are expected to settle in Manhattan.

Each night of the festival centered on themes reflecting the diverse communities the American Sephardic Federation represents. 11 Feature and documentary films focused on communities from Iraq, Syria, France, Mexico, Egypt, Israel, and Ethiopia. They were complemented by question and answer sessions with the film makers, Syrian and Mexican After Parties, and the 2018 Pomegranate award ceremonies.  Na’Ma Kkeha received the Rising Star award for her production and professional television experience. Said Ben Said whose productions  have scored numerous outstanding awards and are screened at the most important film festivals received  the award for artistic courage. Itamar Borochova, jazz innovator and world-renowned trumpeter, won the pomegranate for musical conservation, creativity and coexistence. This award was also bestowed on the Innov Gnawa Grammy-nominated musical collective exploring the Moroccan Gnawa music roots and rituals tradition. It is playing an important part in the Arabic musical world in New York.  Consisting of seven members, six from the collective are the Chorus and play the qraqeb,  a large iron castanet like instrument and on one  plays with vocals the sintit, a guitar sized three stringed lute covered with camel skin.

Among the outstanding productions shown were numerous which had received awards and critical accolades. To review just some

Nora’s Will, Mariana Chenillo, Mexico, 2010

In this melodramatic feature film we can observe in a comedy of religious and secular manners reality clashes snd how family members and friends try to reconcile conflicting demands. Looking for Nora several days before Passover her husband Jose, a secular Jew who lives across the hallway and has been separated from her for many days, enters her apartment and finds a beautifully set large diner table and a refrigerator full of prepared Passover food with instructions how to prepare and serve them. Jose finds her passed away in her bed having committed suicide but before taking her life she set up a situation where all members of the family and friends will spend the last Passover together. Jose has to stay with her until she can get her burial. In the comedy of manners that follows in the following days religious functionaries claim care of the body and insist on carrying out rituals, a worldly  funeral home intervenes, and  flowers as well as a large casket are delivered by an undertaker. Jose argues with his son who has married into an apparently orthodox rich Jewish family and suspects that the son’s loyalties are determined by the father in law. Jose discovers going through Nora’s papers that she had an affair and suspects her of having an unhappy life with him. Nora’s rabbi refuses to give her a religious burial and tries to place her into the ground outside the Jewish section of the cemetery. Jose has to negotiate with the Rabbi’s superior  to solve  the problem.

Stars, Konrad Wolf,  East Germany / Bulgaria, 1959

Directed by a distinguished film maker from communist Germany, the DDR, at a time when there were few if any films made dealing with the holocaust and the discussion of the mass murder of Jews and others by the Third Reich remained taboo for most Germans. Wolf’s film about the evolving relation between a German soldier and a Sephardic Jew in a Bulgarian village was probably the first presenting a sympathetic view of a German soldier involved in the holocaust. The soldier who goes by the name of Walter and loves to draw is guarding with some others a group of Jewish prisoners who are on their way Auschwitz. They stay in the village for several days, locked up in a school.  One of them, Ruth has an encounter with Walter and there is a brief exchange between them but Walter seems to be ignorant about the eventual fate of Ruth and the other prisoners. His superior Kurt who has been to Auschwitz calls it a meat factory without talking about what happens there. He compensates his Auschwitz experience through alcohol and having fun. For Kurt, Ruth is just an attractive prisoner who should give pleasure to Walter. Walter arranges to meet Ruth for long walks outside the school accompanied by a guard. In these exchanges Walter’s diffuse doubts about what happens are resolved and he decides to help Ruth. He had been aware before of the resistance fighters in the village which he could identify but chose not to do so and arranges help for Ruth when the train leaves. Kurt misleads him about the departure time and Ruth is doomed.  Wolf shows Walter’s transformation. From his provision of medications for the imprisoned Jews and the resistance and his failed attempt to save Ruth, he turns to offer arms to the resistance.  The film was shown in East Germany but not in Bulgaria given its conflictual past with the deportation of Jews.  Since Stars won the 1959 Cannes Grand Jury award it was also shown in West Germany but only after the section showing Walter offering arms to the resistance was removed. It was considered too upsetting for most Germans, an act of high treason.

The Ancestral Sin, David Deri, Israel, 2017

This documentary feature by David Deri who comes from a Moroccan family that experienced to the forced settlement policies he depicts, was for me the most important film of the festival triggering great interest in the film whenever I discussed it. Though most knew of the discrimination of Sephardic Jews from Arab countries by the Ashkenazi power structure dominating Israel in its first two decades, few had ever seen the discrimination documented. Deri’s family was forced to settle in Yeruham, a development town in the Negev, as part of the policy to disperse Sephardic Jews from Arab countries in sparsely settled  former Arab areas which opened up in the war of independence and subsequent armed conflicts.  This policy was guided by clear demographic and military goals. Since most Israelis lived in metropolitan urban areas and a large number of newly established moshavim were left by the immigrants after they were moved there an official policy had to be designed.  Forced settlement in new development towns would help to overcome the refugees’ desire for living next to relatives in urban areas.  David Deri was able to reconstruct the story of Israel’s settlement of Sephardic Jews by accessing formerly secret files and summaries of meetings by policy makers, by interviewing academic planning and demographic experts, and by speaking to the victims of the official policies. As expected the systematic forced settlement was based on well-organized policies developed by Ashkenazi officials. Records of their meetings clearly showed a systematic bias as the designation of  Jews from Arab countries show, they were labeled as ignorant and illiterate, having no culture, being more Arab than Jewish,  and  in the words of Ben Gurion were subjected to justified discrimination. Further policies penalizing settlers of developments who left were instituted such as loss of the right to work and to be housed. They even could be asked to compensate the state of Israel for the expenses they incurred. When in the Arab struggles for independence Jewish groups were subject to massive antisemitism more than 200,000 Jews left for Israel. On arrival they could not choose were they wanted to live but leaving the ships they were brought directly to development towns which were often not ready to be inhabited. They were accommodated in public housing. As Deri shows from the protocols of the Jewish Agency meetings all proceedings were confidential.  When in following years Ashkenazi Jews from Poland arrived in Israel, they could live wherever they wanted and certainly did not select the Negev but urban areas. They were housed in apartments they could acquire, an option not available for those living in public housing. When Deri showed his documentary to the victims of the forced settlement policy, now grandparents, the reaction was mixed. Some viewers articulated anger and frustration, others noted that after all Israel was successful implementing these policies if one looks at her current achievement as a major regional power.

The Band’s Visit,  Eran Kolirin, Israel 2007

In this charming feature eight Egyptian musicians get lost in a small forlorn Negev desert town to open an Arab Cultural Center with a concert. They had missed their destination and at night meet few people advising them that this town in the middle of the Israeli desert has no culture be it Israeli or Arab, no hotel and only bus transportation in the morning. The band in its impressive blue uniforms is forced to stay and is accommodated by a family and Dina who runs a café. The musicians have no problems adjusting to their situation. Nowhere in the limited communicative encounter is there an indication of antagonism and hostility between the Israelis and Egyptians. To the contrary the musicians and townspeople are rather open about revealing shortcomings and loss of hope, bringing an element of friendly darkness to the film. They seem as resigned as the town they were stranded in. In the morning hours two teenagers sit speechless in front of the café. One musician is unable to complete a melody he is working on, yet teaches in a disco a resigned teenager how to handle a girl. Next to a telephone a boy is waiting for hours for a call from his girlfriend.  Dina mutters that she is a failure when the communication with Tewfiq, the band leader, who stays in her house, does not go anywhere. Tewgfiq rarely speaks but confides in Dina that both his young son and his wife have died and that he is alone. Both share sympathetic sadness. In the morning the musicians leave for their destination and Dina opens her café.

May 29 to June 3, 2018, Frankfurt am Main

More than 100 films from Japan / New program section NIPPON DOCS /
Diverse supporting program

From May 29 to June 3, 2018 the eighteenth edition of the Nippon Connection Film Festival will take place in Frankfurt am Main. With more than 100 short and feature length films, it is the biggest festival for Japanese film worldwide, offering a varied and exciting insight into Japanese cinema. About 60 filmmakers and artists from Japan are present to introduce their works to the local audience. Apart from the films, a diverse supporting program gives visitors the chance to explore the multi-faceted culture of Japan. The main venues are at Künstlerhaus Mousonturm and at Theater Willy Praml in der Naxoshalle.

Cinema Highlights

At the Nippon Connection Festival, numerous films can be seen for the first time on German screens. In Hanagatami, veteran director Nobuhiko Obayashi draws a multi-layered and stylistically extraordinary panorama about a group of adolescents in 1940’s Japan. In Hirokazu Koreeda’s crime drama The Third Murder, 2017 Nippon Honor Awardee Koji Yakusho shines in his role as a murder suspect who is sentenced to death. The small-town comedy Enokida Trading Post by Ken Iizuka convinces with both laconic humour and charming local color. Leading actor Kiyohiko Shibukawa will be a guest at the film’s world premiere in Frankfurt. In Destiny: The Tale of Kamakura, director Takashi Yamazaki takes the audience to a fantastic world full of romance and adventure. Further highlights include Isao Yukisada’s dark coming-of-age-drama River’s Edge, which won a FIPRESCI-Award at this year’s Berlinale. Favorite of the public Takeshi Kitano delivers Outrage Coda, the long-awaited third part of his Yakuza saga. In Bamy, up-and-coming director Jun Tanaka unfolds a visually impressive and atmospheric horror story.

Animated Films

Fans of the exceptional animated film will be curious for Masaaki Yuasa’s most recent films: Lu Over the Wall and The Night is Short, Walk On Girl take up mysterious and fairytale-like stories, expressing them in ecstatic images. Both films are shown at the festival as German premieres. The Japanese-French co-production Mutafukaz by Shojiro Nishimi and Guillaume Renard also avoids current anime clichés and provides an action-loaded scenario with undertones of social criticism.

Historical Rarities

The Japanese silent film Kurama Tengo by Teppei Yamaguchi (1928) will be shown at the Nippon Connection Festival not only with a live-performed score, but also with narrative accompaniment by benshi (film narrator) Ichiro Kataoka. A further rarity of cinema is the screening of the erotic Pink Film Blue Film Woman by Kan Mukai (1969) in a newly restaurated version by Rapid Eye Movies.

New Program Section NIPPON DOCS

A special focus of the film program is directed at the new program section NIPPON DOCS, which is supported by the Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain. In their productions, dedicated documentary filmmakers present their critical perspectives on social and political developments in Japan. In her award-winning film Of Love & Law,Hikaru Toda examines the situation of people who are diverging from socially accepted standard norms because of their sexual orientation or their family history. For her film Trace of Breath, Haruka Komori has visited the owner of a market garden in a small town in the northeast of Japan which was destroyed by the earthquake and tsunami in 2011. Out of these visits emerged a heartwarming portrait of a man who never gave up hope. Kazuhiro Soda traveled to the province for his film project as well: In Inland Sea, the director observes the life of a small Japanese harbor town primarily inhabited by the elderly because of the migration of the younger generation to metropolitan regions.

Diverse Supporting Program

Apart from the films, the festival offers a wide variety of workshops, concerts, performances, and exhibitions, inviting the audience to get to know more about Japanese culture. Interested visitors can try out making their own ornate silhouettes in a papercut workshop with artist Michiyo Arakawa from Okinawa, or they can learn what unknown possibilities for folding and knotting a square cloth has to offer in the furoshiki workshop. Photographer Matthieu Zellweger presents his photo project “The Art of Sake Brewing” at the showroom of Ausstellungsraum Eulengasse. Elaborate electro-pop music comes from the Japanese-Swiss combo Tim and Puma-Mimi. At Nippon Heimkino, cult director and writer Jörg Buttgereit presents a selected gem of Japanese genre film, going well with chips and beer. The NipponFilmfrühstück and the NipponFilmdinner also offer a chance to combine cinema and culinary enjoyment. Whoever craves for more Japanese specialties or handicraft should try the catering and merchandising stalls.

Culture for Kids

The events of the NIPPON KIDS program provide a lot of excitement for the youngest visitors of the Nippon Connection festival. The magical animation film Mary and the Witch’s Flower by Hiromasa Yonebayashi will be shown as a children’s film. At a koinobori workshop, children can create big Japanese carps from cloth and many different colors. The kamishibai performance presents a special kind of paper theater.

The Festival

The Japanese Film Festival Nippon Connection is organized on a voluntary basis by the 70 members of the non-profit Nippon Connection registered association. The festival is under the patronage of Peter Feldmann, Mayor of the City of Frankfurt am Main, and the Consul General of Japan in Frankfurt am Main (to be confirmed). AN EVENING WITH BEVERLY LUFF LINN to open the festival

15 years after the Calgary Underground Film Festival (CUFF) first launched, Western Canada's biggest genre festival presents its boldest and most eclectic lineup yet.

“I remember the day we started this festival and our vision was to grow within our means, screen provocative, boundary-pushing independent film, build a solid community, and to really make sure we were creating a festival as fans, for fans," said Co-Founder & Festival Director Brenda Lieberman.

With humble beginnings using fold-out chairs at The Venue (now called HiFi Club) attended by a few hundred fans over three-days; today, CUFF is a seven-day internationally-recognized festival presenting 55 films to nearly 7,000 attendees.

"I’m excited we’ve reached 15 years, continually growing, and achieving what we set out to do! I love this festival, and what we’ve become so far!”

Highlights of this year's festival include:

  • AN EVENING WITH BEVERLY LUFF LINN starring Aubrey Plaza, Jemaine Clement, Emile Hirsch and Craig Robinson will open the festival on Monday, April 16. Director Jim Hosking in attendance.
  • The psychological thriller KNUCKLEBALL from local director Mike Peterson with director, cast & crew in attendance.
  • The international premiere of FREAKS & GEEKS: THE DOCUMENTARY from Alberta filmmaker Brent Hodge, just days after it premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival.

  • The return of the FOUND FOOTAGE FESTIVAL: VOLUME 8, a one-of-a-kind CUFF-favourite event that showcases footage from videos that were found at garage sales and thrift stores and in warehouses and dumpsters across the country. Curators Nick and Joe will be back at CUFF for the first time in four years.
  • A highlight every year, the SATURDAY MORNING ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT CEREAL CARTOON PARTY featuring retro cartoons and hundreds of sugary cereals not available in Canada
  • For the fourth consecutive year, we'll launch 5 new classic arcade games as part of CUFFcade, Calgary's first independent arcade, available to play for free during the fest.
  • 5 Alberta-made shorts: G.E.M. (Dir. Mike Hooves), PENNY WHISTLE (Dir. Robert Cuffley), POOLSIDE (Dir. Morgan Ermter), REARVIEW (Dir. Daelan Wood) and TROPE (Dir. Sara Hughes).

Coralie Fargeat), a documentary about the history of roller-dancing in Venice Beach ROLLER DREAMS (Dir. Kate Hickey), and Lynne Ramsay’s latest YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE will be presented alongside a retrospective of her past work.

Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (aka PÖFF), Youth and Children’s Film Festival Just Film and PÖFF Shorts have opened submissions for the 2018 edition.

The 22nd edition of PÖFF, running from November 16th to December 2nd, will see a major change in one of the three competition programmes of the festival. The former Estonian Film Competition that used to be judged by the same jury as the First Feature Competition will be turned into a new programme with its own international jury – the Baltic Film Competition – screening a selection of feature-length films made in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The programme requires Estonian premiere for the Lithuanian and Latvian films (no premiere requirements for Estonian films) and is designed as a showcase of the best Baltic cinematic output from the last year. The programme will have one award - Award for Best Baltic Feature Film with a grant of 3200 Euros, shared by the director and producer.

Festival director Tiina Lokk comments: „The Baltic Competition is actually an old idea of ours that we are excited to return to. It was a programme we had to cancel years back, as the Baltic film output was just not sufficient enough. We are glad that the situation in the three countries has improved significantly and we can embrace the regional aspiration of PÖFF, to introduce the best cinematic output of the three states.“

The festival will also continue its two other competition programmes. The Official Selection Competition will look for films completed after the 15th of September, 2017. With world, international or European premiere as a eligibility criterium.

The First Feature Competition, open for filmmakers presenting their feature debut, will accept films completed after the 15th of September, 2017. That have not had their world or international premiere.

Submissions are also open for all the non-competitive sections of the festival. The programme will include around 200 feature films and documentaries. The final day for submissions is the 17th of August.

The 17th Youth and Children’s film festival Just Film will also see a significant change as the festival will now be run as long as the main festival - 17 days - to meet the growing demand of the audience. The festival broke its audience record for the fourth year in a row, reaching 17500 last year. Just Film is looking for films for its youth and children’s competitions and documentary sections. Submissions will stay open until the 17th of August.

The 2nd PÖFF Shorts, showcasing short films and animations, will run from the 20th to the 25th of November. The festival saw the merging of two separate sub-festivals last year - the animation film festival Animated Dreams and the International Short Film Festival Sleepwalkers. The new festival has retained the identities and most programmes of the former festival. Submissions close on the 25th of August.

Spotlight Screening

Female-led Industry Panel Ahead of London Premiere of Pin Cushion

Women take on key roles in assuring a film's lifecycle doesn't end with its production, as explored in a special EEFF Spotlight Screening of PIN CUSHION (Deborah Haywood, UK). Casting a keen eye on the complex relationships between women, this deliciously dark and utterly distinctive British debut infuses its dreamlike, fairytale like quality with shards of something much sharper and more troubling. To discuss these issues revealed in the film and in its production, the film will be followed by an industry discussion in partnership with Underwire Film Festival with many of the films key female crew members.
