The opening of the Third Edition of the LosCabosInternational Film Festival took place at the outdoor theater of the Pabellón Cultural de La República, framed by the Marina Cabo San Lucas, Los Cabos.
Around 1,200 guests witnessed the beginning of this edition that will feature a program that places its best bet on, and supports filmmakers seeking to internationalize their job, as well as industry activities, galas, red carpets, honor tributes, free and outdoor screenings, in one of the most sought after places in Mexico, Los Cabos.
Alonso Aguilar-Castillo, General Director of Los Cabos International Film Festival, accompanied by Mexican actress Irene Azuela, Rubén Reachi, Tourism Minister of Baja California Sur; Jorge Sánchez, Director General of the Mexican Film Institute; and Alfonso Pasquel, President of Los Cabos Arte y Cultura, presided the opening ceremony.
The Gabriel Figueroa Film Fund awards ceremony took place, where Jorge Sánchez and Gabriel Figueroa Flores granted seven Mexican projects in development stage USD $5,000 each, and two others, in post-production stage received USD $ 52,000 in Labodigital services.

The seven winning projects in development stage:
- Coleccionistas de sombras (Director and Producer Viviana García Besné - Documentary).
- Los días más oscuros de nosotras (Director Astrid Rondero, Producer Fernanda Valadez – Fiction), a Tribeca Film Institute project selected by the Festival.
- Entrevero (Director Max Zunino, Producer Laura Imperiale – Fiction).
- Hombre por hombre (Director Marcelo Tobar, Producer Elsa Reyes – Fiction).
- Ojos de mar y tierra (Director José Álvarez, Producer Julio Chavezmontes – Documentary).
- Siete horas (Director Chema Rodríguez, Producers Francisco Vargas and Chema Rodríguez – Fiction).
- Ya no estoy aquí (Director Fernando Frías, Producers Gerry Kim and Mayuran Tiruchelvam – Fiction).
The two winning projects in post-production stage:
- El charro de Toluquilla (Director José Villalobos Romero, Producer Sergio Adrián Morkin – Documentary).
- Semana Santa (Director Alejandra Márquez Abella, Producers Nicolás Celis and Sebastián Celis - Fiction).
In the framework of the second year of the Gabriel Figueroa Film Fund, the opening of the photographic exhibit "Gabriel Figueroa Homage" took place. This display rends tribute to the art of Figueroa, and shows the quality of his work as inspiration and as an example for new generations of Mexican and international filmmakers.
Additionally, the Festival celebrated the life and achievements of Roger Ebert, through a Posthumous Tribute in honor of the famed film critic. His widow, Chaz Ebert, received the Tribute from Mark Adams, Chief critics and reviews editor for Screen International.
The role of critique is essential for the evolution of filmmaking. The words of skilled viewers (the pens of the critics) decode a film’s many attributes and accompany it in its search of an audience.
To begin the screenings at the Opening Gala Wild by Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallée. The film that renders the brave story of Cheryl Strayed with a powerful performance by the actress Reese Witherspoon, was showcased as a Latin American Premiere at the Festival.
