In collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art in Toronto (MOCCA), the Festival du nouveau cinéma presents the Lab evening, celebrating 10 years of the hybrid event VIDEODROME Tour, presented from 2004 in Toronto.
Mash-up, cut-up, video art and underground culture club collide to break boundaries between audience and artist. 4 performers, Jubal Brown, NwodtleM, Ouananiche et Sarin, will create an intense audiovisual synesthesia during 3 hours. Videodrome will strive for televisionary excess and sensory overload.
Preceded by the immersive SPACE NOISE performed by Japanese filmmaker Takashi Makino. 16mm and video projectors, live soundtrack, smoke machine and 3D glasses will allow the public to enter and experience a space filled with lights that give a physical presence to the images, well beyond the screen.

A performance combining extracts from Hitchcock Études (2010) - Behind the Sound of Music (2014) - Kubrick Études (2013).
The Criterion Collection is a series of glitch-based pieces that delve into the worlds of iconic films and filmmakers that have made a marked impact on the aesthetic of Nicole Lizée. Each work is constructed around damaged and deconstructed audio and video - chewed and warped videocassettes. The resulting errors and imperfections are woven together to create a sonic landscape over which accompanying instrumental material - itself emulating the traits of broken or malfunctioning media - is performed live.
The living performer interacts with the lost, forgotten or even dead icon, simultaneously breathing new life and emotion into the characters while bending, stretching, and hacking the original context, function and storyline. The performer infiltrates the scene and engages with the (often psychotic) character; at once becoming part of the mise-en-scène, while simultaneously guiding it into a new direction.
The performers in the concert - Steve Raegele, guitar, and Ben Reimer, percussion - are prominent musicians in the Montreal contemporary music scene and have performed extensively across Canada and the U.S.

This coming October 11 at 7:30 p.m., the Musée d’art contemporain presents the North American premiere of superposition, a performance by Japanese electronic-music composer and visual artist Ryoji Ikeda at Théâtre Maisonneuve, Place des Arts, as part of the Festival du nouveau cinéma.
Offering a unique sensory experience combining sound, visuals, physical phenomena, mathematical concepts, human behaviour and randomness, superposition has been widely acclaimed internationally.

Précédé par la performance immersive SPACE NOICE du cinéaste japonais Takashi Makino. Projecteurs 16mm et vidéo, bande sonore créée en direct, utilisation d'une machine à fumée et distribution de lunettes 3D aux spectateurs : l'artiste invite le public à vivre une expérience sensorielle en créant un espace rempli de reflets qui contribuent à donner une présence physique aux images, bien au-delà de l’écran.

Série de pièces audiovisuelles d’esthétique glitch, The Criterion Collection revisite les univers iconiques de films et cinéastes qui ont marqué le travail de la compositrice canadienne Nicole Lizée. Chaque titre émerge d’une déconstruction audiovisuelle – des vidéocassettes mâchées et déformées. De ce tissage d’imperfections nait un paysage sonore, lui-même accompagné d’instruments joués en direct qui pastichent les traits de médias défectueux.
Ici, l’artiste vivante interagit avec l’icône perdu, oublié ou mort, injectant un souffle nouveau aux personnages en pliant, étirant et piratant le contexte ou le scénario original. La performeuse s’engage dans un dialogue avec les personnages (souvent psychotiques), à la fois partie prenante de la mise en scène et empruntant une nouvelle direction.
Les partitions sont interprétées en direct par Steve Raegele (guitare) et Ben Reimer (percussions), musiciens de la scène contemporaine montréalaise ayant joué à travers le Canada et les Etats-Unis.

Le 11 octobre prochain à 19 h 30, le Musée d’art contemporain présente en première nord-américaine superposition, une performance du compositeur de musique électronique et artiste visuel japonais Ryoji Ikeda, en collaboration avec le Festival du nouveau cinéma de Montréal, au Théâtre Maisonneuve de la Place des Arts.
Proposant une expérience sensorielle unique où se combinent sons, images, phénomènes physiques, concepts mathématiques, comportements humains et caractères aléatoires, superposition a été saluée par la critique internationale.
