The Montreal Festival du nouveau cinéma (FNC), Canada’s longest-running film festival, is pleased to announce that it has become a member of The Belt and Road Film Festival Alliance in the run-up to its 50th edition, to be held October 6 to 17, 2021. This new partnership will solidify the FNC’s development and international reach alongside its membership in FIPRESCI (the FNC has awarded the FIPRESCI prize since 2019) and the new Eurimages Audentia Award to promote gender parity and equality, to be awarded this year.
“The invitation from the Shanghai International Film (SIFF) to join the Alliance is a clear sign that the Montreal Festival du nouveau cinéma (FNC) is increasingly important on the international scene, due in part to the many actions and initiatives we have developed in favour of diversity, equality and inclusion. Through this membership, we will be able to increase our international influence, gain access to new content and promote cinema from Quebec and Canada in Asia,” according to Nicolas Girard Deltruc, Executive Director of the FNC.
Initiated by the Shanghai International Film Festival in 2018, The Belt and Road Film Festival Alliance includes over 50 festivals and institutions around the world. Its members share programming recommendations and facilitate professional and cultural exchanges within the industry among its members, the festivals and institutions that make up the Alliance.
In keeping with its role of spotting new talent, the FNC will be able to expand cultural and educational exchanges to get to know and promote a variety of national film industries, including China’s. As members, we will also be able to expose programming from Quebec and Canada to a wide network of international festivals. And with a view to setting up a co-production market in 2021, this agreement will help the FNC stimulate collaboration by encouraging international co-productions between Canada and the Alliance’s member countries.
The FNC will be back in 2021 for its 50th edition, to be held from October 6 to 17. The call for submissions will be launched on March 1.
