Winter the Dolphin Hosts Sunscreen Film Fest Screenings
Short documentaries created as part of the Marine Science Film Camp to screen at aquarium.
(TAMPA BAY, FL,) December 12, 2013- Kids, dolphins, sea turtles, otters, marine science and movies. The Sunscreen Film Festival, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium partnered to bring all these elements together in a 6 week film camp. A reception and public screening of the two short documentaries produced at the camp will be held at 7PM on December 21st, 2013 at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.
The Sunscreen Film Festival hosted a documentary film camp over the course of 6 Saturdays starting in November for young filmmakers at the CMA. The camp focused on marine science issues and film. Students learned about topics affecting marine life and ecosystems along the gulf coast region. The students created two documentaries to share their experiences.
The CMA is of course most well-known for its resident film star Winter the Dolphin. The subject of the film Dolphin Tale and the upcoming Dolphin Tale 2, Winter has become an internationally recognized symbol for marine life rescue and rehabilitation. She has also become an inspirational figure for kids and adults alike. www.seewinter.com
With the CMA as a backdrop for the film camp, students learned about marine science topics, interacted with animals and resources at the aquarium, learned from guest lecturers, and through hands on training, created impactful documentaries using their own talents and visions to bring pressing topics to life.
Sunscreen Executive Director Tony Armer commented, “this was a natural partnership building on our current film camps, film institute and community outreach, it’s really exciting stuff for Sunscreen, the CMA, and the community”.
CMA Executive Director David Yates had this to say, “I admire what Sunscreen has done over the years and by merging the art of film and marine science the CMA is helping to create even more positive education and outreach for marine issues, as well as providing opportunities for underserved segments of the community”.
A reception and public screening of the two short documentaries produced at the camp will be held at 7PM on December 21st, 2013 at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.
Sunscreen is one of only 23 festivals sponsored by the AMPAS for 2013.
