FANTASPORTO 2014 Regulations

REGULATIONS  

  

1. The 34th edition of the OPORTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL - FANTASPORTO 2014 will take place from February, 28th till March 9th. 

 

2. The Festival main purpose is screening and promoting films of quality, both aesthetically and thematically, and to seek new forms and methods of filmmaking.

 

3. The Festival has the following sections.

 

3.1. Competitive Sections:

 

3.1.1. Official Competition for Fantasy Films – new feature and short films, unreleased in Portugal with fantasy as main genre. Both features and shorts (maximum 15 minutes in length) must have been produced between 2013 and 2014.

3.1.2. Official Competition Directors Week – for new feature films in all genres other than fantasy, unreleased in Portugal and produced between 2013 and 2014.

3.1.3. Official Competition Orient Express - for Asiatic feature films, unreleased in Portugal and produced between 2013 and 2014.

 

3.2. Non - Competitive Sections:

 

3.2.1. Official Section Panorama & Première - for feature films in all subjects, unreleased in Portugal. 

3.2.2. Anima-te (Animation features and shorts)

3.2.3. Panorama of Portuguese Cinema

3.2.4. Fantas in Shorts - short films in all genres.

3.2.5. Retrospectives

 

4. The Festival aims at:

 

4.1. Promoting in the city of Oporto a cultural forum with international impact.

4.2. Dignifying the Portuguese Cinema and encouraging the film production in Portugal. 

4.3. Promoting Portugal in the world film industry.

 

5. Film Application Procedures

 

5.1. The participating producers, directors and sales agents may present short or full-length films under the following conditions:

5.1.1. 35mm prints (preferential) or Betacam SP PAL or Digibeta

5.1.2. To have English subtitles or to be spoken in English.

5.1.3. To have been produced between 2013 and 2014, if applying for competition.

5.1.4. To be the first public screening / official preview of the film in Portugal, if entering for the Competitive Sections.

 

6. The filling of the ENTRY FORM IS COMPULSORY for legal reasons. It can be found in the festival’s site (http://www.fantasporto.com)

 

6.1. THE ENTRY FORM must be downloaded, filled in and sent by mail to the Organizers from now on and TILL THE 5th DECEMBER 2013 in order to be submitted to the Selection Committee.

 

6.1.1. The entry form must be accompanied by a screener in DVD or BluRay PAL, important information about the film and 3 photos, to be used by the Selection Committee.

6.1.2. The screeners and promotional material will not be returned to the sender.

6.1.4- PORTUGUESE FILM AWARDS – Only for new films when running for the Best Film Award and if accompanied by a Declaration that it is a first time screening in a festival or similar event in Portugal. It is considered a Portuguese Film a film which has two of these three conditions: coming from a Portuguese producing company (1) and Portuguese nationality of the director (2) or producer (3).

 

7. If the film is selected, the following documentation should be sent as soon as possible and till the 15th December 2013:

 

7.1. For Electronic Subtitling:

 

7.1.1. Dialogue list of the film in English.

7.1.2. Screener in DVD or BluRay PAL  

 

7.2. For Promotion:

 
7.2.1. five (5) press stills 

7.2.2. Three (3) posters

7.2.3. One (1) press-book

7.2.4. A trailer in DVD or Bluray PAL

7.2.5. EPK of the film for TV promotion (optional)

 

7.3. The materials must be sent to the above-mentioned address and will not be returned to the sender.

 

8. THE PRINTS OF THE FILMS SHOULD BE IN POSSESSION OF THE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE in the designated dates -

 

8.1. Till the 1st February 2014 - for Betacams SP PAL or Digibeta

8.2. Till 15th February 2014 - for 35mm prints. 

8.3. The materials must be sent to the above-mentioned address.

8.4. The Festival insurance coverage includes all risks including theft or fire, loss or disappearance; total or partial damage. The insurance company covers all films screened in the festival.

8.5. The films will only be returned to the sender after the first weekday following the closing of the festival.

 

9. The Organizers are responsible for the selection of the films submitted to the Competitive Sections but delegates in International Juries for the decision on the awards.

 

9.1. The Organizers will nominate three International Juries that will decide on the Official Awards of each edition of the festival.

 

9.1.1. Jury of the Official Competition for Fantasy Films

The International Jury of the Official Section for Fantasy Films will grant the following awards:
a) FANTASPORTO Best Film Award
b) Best Direction
c) Best Actor
d) Best Actress
e) Best Screenplay
f) Best Special Effects
g) Special Award of the Jury
This award will be given to a film whose artistic and technical aspects present a high level of originality.
h) Best Fantasy Short Award

 

9.1.2. Jury of the Official Competition Directors Week

The International Jury of the Directors Week will grant the following awards:
a) Directors Week Best Film Award
b) Best Director
c) Best Actor
d) Best Actress

e) Best Screenplay

f) Special Award of the Directors Week – for a film with a high level of originality.

9.1.3. Jury of the Official Competition Orient Express

The International Jury of the Orient Express official section will grant the following awards:
a) Orient Express Best Film Award
b) Orient Express Special Award of the Jury- for a film with a high level of originality

 

9.1.4. Jury of the Portuguese Cinema  

This jury will grant the following awards:

a) Portuguese Cinema Award- Best Film - for a Portuguese film produced in 2013/2014 (short or feature length).

b) Portuguese  Cinema Award - Best Film School - For a school or university with a Cinema course, which presents the best set of 3 to 5 films, not exceeding 15 minutes, in a total limit of 1 hour and produced in 2013 or 2014.

c) IMPORTANT- The Award for Best Portuguese film can only be granted to new films and if accompanied by a Declaration that it is a first time screening in a festival or similar event in Portugal. It is considered a Portuguese Film a film which has two of these three conditions: coming from a Portuguese producing company (1) and Portuguese nationality of the director (2) or producer (3).

 

 

10. The awards of the festival have no monetary value and consist of trophies and diplomas for the winners. Diplomas will also be given to all other participants in the Official Sections.

 

11. The criteria of the final programming per screening room belongs exclusively to the organizers.

 

12. The Organizing Committee will decide on all matters not provided in these regulations.
