UDINE – What’s on the other side? This question has been nourishing our soul for millenniums. It doesn’t actually matter if the “other side” is physical or metaphorical, if there’s a closed door or an open space. What matters is that it arouses curiosity. It awakens our instinct of discovery and research, of searching for something that catches our eyes. The Udine Far East Film Festival knows this and since 1999, has been exploring the “other side” called Asia, just like the graphic artist Roberto Rosolin that has captured these explorations in one graphic image.

The new FEFF poster hints at giving a possible answer to this question through the movement of our eyes, which, at the end of the journey, eventually set themselves on the profile of a young woman with oriental features, style icon of the next future or of the distant past and also in her eyes, which we can see look far in the distance as if searching for something else to explore. The “West” maybe?

Rosolin created the image using the light painting technique where light is literally painted into the scene by using spotlights which are cast directly on the face of the girl, without the aid of graphic software tools. He created a glowing portrait where high-tech meets tradition and where science fiction meets dreamlike elements.

Hence dreams versus reality, the Far East Film Festival is about to come “of age”: from the 22nd to the 30th April, in fact all spotlights will be on its Eighteenth Edition! The 60 film titles scheduled in the programme are from amongst the best productions of the last season (blockbusters, cult movies, outsiders or art films from Asia).

The #FEFF18 agenda will be enriched by a network of collateral events that will be held in the centre of Udine. Other activities include the FEFF Campus, school of journalism for young European and Asian talents and Ties That Bind, international workshop that brings together film producers from Asia and Europe. The deadline to buy accreditation passes at a promotional price is 14th March (all info at www.fareastfilm.com).

Roberto Rosolin was born in Gorizia in 1980. After his studies, he started his career as a graphic designer in Friuli Venezia Giulia before moving to London, where he now lives and works. He is currently Art Director of Fabric, one of London’s premier venues, and of his own record label, which have received much international attention. Recently his work with photographer Mads Perch has been used as the cover of the annual photo book Creative Review.
