London Short Film Festival 8-17 January 2016 Full Programme Announced

Philip & Jo (Artistic Director and Programme Director of the London Short Film Festival) and the LSFF team are excited to announce the programme for the 13th London Short Film Festival (8 - 17 Jan 2016).

LSFF prides itself on being the biggest showcase of UK short film. Away from the mainstream, UK film culture is alive with ground-breaking artists and original voices which will be showcased at this year’s Festival. With 38 programmes of NEW UK WORK, six dedicated DOCUMENTARY programmes, four INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM programmes, and an eclectic selection of SPECIAL EVENTS, LIVE MUSIC, RETROSPECTIVES, & COMMISSIONS, January's festival promises to be the biggest most exciting LSFF edition to date.

CATS&CATS&CATS

Thursday 14 Jan: Round Chapel, 7.30pm

We reclaim the cat video from its contemporary YouTube ghetto and looks at the cat film in experimental cinema, with new film commissions from artist filmmakers Vivienne Dick, Jennifer Reeder and Nicholas Abrahams, plus a newly commissioned score by electronica trio Stealing Sheep to films by Maya Deren and Stan Brakhage. Our friends at Vienna International Shorts are providing us with a selection of more contemporary cats, so maybe grumpy cat will get a look in too...! All this will take place in the majestic surroundings of The Round Chapel in Lower Clapton.

THE HARMONY KORINE WEEKENDER with MUBI

Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 Jan, ICA
 

We feel a close affinity with the uncompromising cinema of Korine, particularly his 1998 debut feature Gummo, which we will screen and re-visit with a symposium (a Gummo-sium) featuring filmmakers, writers and academics responding to the work. There will also be a chance to see Korine's music videos and fashion films. Also screening is the UK premiere of A Crack Up at the Race Riots, adapted from Korine's book of the same name by Belgian artist collective Leo Gabin.

NATURE MIXTAPE [Jessica Sarah Rinland & Mary Field]

Wednesday 13 Jan, ICA Cinema 1, 6.30pm

We're commissioning a new film by Jessica Sarah Rinland made in response to work by the little-known, pioneering British documentarian Mary Field (1896-1968) which explore British wildlife with humanising narratives, providing a unique insight into the anthropology and culture of mid-twentieth century Britain. Rinland's new film, shot on location in the diverse natural habits of Argentina, will play alongside 16mm and 35mm prints of Field's groundbreaking films, followed by a panel discussion.

LITTLE STABS AT HAPPINESS

Friday 15 Jan, ICA Theatre, 8PM

We welcome the return of Little Stabs at Happiness, the legendary music and film club presented by Mark Webber (ex-Pulp) at the ICA from 1997 to 2000, with a 16mm screening of The Savage Eye (1959) about the L.A. underground scene, plus 16mm shorts and a disco!

ANALOGUE BASEMENT

Saturday 16 Jan, ACE Hotel Miranda, from 4PM

An afternoon of all things analogue and celluloid at Ace Hotel Shoreditch, with a live 16mm projection programme from David Leister's Analogue Precurring, plus a screening and Q&A of the coffee-developed 16mm mini-feature Bronco's House.

ADAM YAUCH: HOMAGE TO HOMEBOY + MOWER [live]

Friday 15 Jan, Ace Hotel Miranda, 7PM

Retrospective of video work by Nathaniel Hörnblowér, the alter-ego of the late Beastie Boy Adam Yauch, in association with Winterthur Short Film Festival. Following the screening, London re-formed 3-piece Mower will play a live set throwing in some Beastie Boys cover versions for good measure.

BERLIN

Sunday 17 Jan, ICA Theatre, 3Pm onwards

We visit the early 80s cultural hotspot of West Berlin, with the London premiere of B-Movie: Lust & Sound in West Berlin 1979 - 1989, plus a screening of the cult eighties Berlin movie Christiane F. Live music from electronica chanteuse Lone Taxidermist, plus a German music only DJ set from Vinyl Therapy.

THE HALLOWEEN SOCIETY RETROSPECTIVE

Saturday 9 Jan, ICA Cinema 1, 2PM

LSFF Director Philip Ilson re-visits his youth and the roots of LSFF with a retrospective of the films he made with schoolfriend Tim Harding (under the name Halloween Society). The society will also be celebrated in an exhibition of posters and flyers at Hackney Picturehouse throughout the festival.

OPENING NIGHT: GABBA GABBA ANALOGUE!

Friday 8 January, ICA Theatre, from 7.30PM

Join us at our opening party at the ICA. Live sets from the best opto-musical electronic abstract animation found sound found imagery tape manipulator and improvisation duo, Sculpture, plus the brain-disturbing sex trash art attack of Heidi Hörsturz. Plus music videos, and Bizarre Rituals DJs.

NEW QUEER VISIONS + Club Night

Thursday 14 Jan, Ace Hotel, Miranda, 6.30PM til late

A programme of shorts and a club night at Ace Hotel Shoreditch. Eclectic international short films and Q&As are followed by an after-party of lowdown dirty beats and Tumblr mashups from Hello Mozart (Hot Boy Dancing Spot).

WHO AM I NOW? NEGOTIATING IDENTITY IN FASHION FILM

Sunday 17 January, ICA Cinema 1, 4PM

A screening and panel discussion, hosted by The London College of Fashion to explore the question of identity in the fashion film, spanning a range of filmmaking approaches, from experimental to documentary.

LSFF INDUSTRY PROGRAMME

Saturday 9, Monday 11- Friday 15 January, Hackney Attic

The Attic at Hackney Picturehouse will host the Festival industry events, running from Saturday 9th to Friday 15th Jan – including workshops from Shorts International, Guardian Docs & British Council Film.

We’ll also be hosting HAPPY HOUR DRINKS for filmmakers on Monday 12th – Friday 15th Jan, 5.30-6.30pm, courtesy of Jameson First Shot.
