Partly due to the fact that I have come to be less patient with speeches and formalities and partly in protest at the non-receipt of an invitation to the closing film screening, I decided to skip the ceremony, like I had skipped the ope...

Paul Verhoeven Jury President at Berlinale 2017

0
0

The Dutch director and screenwriter Paul Verhoeven will serve as jury president of the 67th Berlin International Film Festival, held February 9 - 19 2017. The rest of the jury will be announced soon.

“With Paul Verhoeven as jury president, we have a filmmaker who has worked in a variety of genres in Europe and Hollywood. His creative, multifaceted boldness and his willingness to experiment are reflected in the spectrum of his works,” says Dieter Kosslick, director of the Berlinale.

The Berlinale welcomed the acclaimed filmmaker in 2013 at the Berlinale Talent Campus (today’s Berlinale Talents). At the panel “Follow Your Instincts: Filmmaking According to Paul Verhoeven” he gave insight into his work methods and his perspective on production landscapes in the US and Europe.

Following studies in mathematics and physics, Paul Verhoeven turned his attention towards film in the mid-1960s, and began his directing career in 1969 with the successful Dutch television series Floris. After his feature film debut Business is Business in 1971, about two prostitutes who dream of a conventional middle-class life, came the erotic thriller Turkish Delight in 1973, a big hit in the Netherlands that also garnered a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 1974 Academy Awards. Following his international breakthrough Soldier of Orange (1977) - which was nominated for a Golden Globe - and The Fourth Man (1983), Paul Verhoeven moved to Hollywood to focus on an evolution of style in his work.

Large productions featuring lots of action and special effects, like RoboCop (1987), and especially Total Recall(1990), were big box-office hits that revolutionized the science fiction film genre while maintaining credibility as author’s films.

The provocative, erotic thriller Basic Instinct (1992) saw Paul Verhoeven return to themes prevalent in his Dutch works. Basic Instinct shot Sharon Stone to stardom, and was nominated for two Academy Awards. In 1997 and 2000, he once again focused on science fiction with Starship Troopers and Hollow Man.

After nearly 20 years in Hollywood, Paul Verhoeven returned to the Netherlands in 2006 to film Black Book (2006), based on the story of a Dutch resistance fighter during World War II.

Starting in 2007, he moved his attention to writing. He returned to the cinema in 2016, celebrating his comeback with the French-German production Elle. In Elle, Paul Verhoeven continues his focus on familiar themes in a surprising new way. Isabelle Huppert plays a woman whose forays through the depths of sado-masochism help her transcend childhood trauma.

Elle, set to open in German cinemas on February 2, 2017, is nominated for the European Film Awards - held in Berlin December 11 - 13 - in three categories, as well as in two categories for the US Critics’ Choice Awards.

BUDAPEST ISRAELI FILM WEEK, WRAP

By Alex Cousy Deleon

There were altogether some fourteen films programed in this overview of recent Israeli films, however due to overlapping scheduling at the Puskin Art Mozi it was not possible to get to them all. One or two that looked particularly enticing were missed. What films were seen indicate that the Israeli film industry is thriving, loaded with talent, entering into many co-productions to expand productivity, and forging full steam ahead. The last film I managed to get to was the following:

PLAYOFF  2011 director Eran Riklis, also director  of 'The Syrian Bride' and 'Lemon Tree', two of the highest profile Israeli films at festivals and generally during the past dozen years.

This latest Riklis effort, filmed entirely in Germany with non-Israeli actors, featured American actor  Danny Huston as "Max Soller" a legendary Israeli basketball coach of German origin, who returns to the country he fled 39 years before, to coach a stumbling German basketball team.

What appears to be a film about basketball is that only obliquely.

This is basically a pretext to look into the painfully unclear history of Soller's Jewish family under Naziism and leads to unpleasant discoveries and a confrontation with an unreformed ex-Nazi colleague.

He coaches this second rate team with something like a feeling of vengeance often referring to a book the cover of which we see several times, significantly -- the autobiography of legendary Boston Celtics NBA coach Red Auerbach who was very definitely Jewish and made no bones about it. And Solldr makes no bones about claiming that Auerbach is his role model in life. One important subplot is his antagonistic relationship with a rebellious young German player. We see a few hardwood clips but not very much as the Playoff in this  picture is more about his confontation with his past than with the other teams. At the end we are informed that the team he was coaching came in at a not very rousing eighth place in the 1984 German basketball league playoffs.

The film is beautifully lensed, especially in the countryside scenes but is not terribly gripping like Mr. Riklis' previous successes. A thread of romantic tension is supplied by a very attractive Turkish woman who is befriended by Soller and is having problems with her residence status. This turns into a real teaser when she strips and offers herself to him, but he has too much on his mind do accept her nearly unrefusable offer.

The suffocation of pent up emotions or something like that. The woman incidentally is played my mixed Kurdish English ancestry actress Amira Casar, best known for her ravishing central role in Catherine Breillat's hardcore sex opus "The Anatomy of Hell", 2004.

Mr. Huston, son of legendary Hollywood director John Huston and half-Brother of Angelica Huston, is on most of the time and is given innumerable facial closeups to reveal his sensitivity and inner conflicts.

Problem is that Huston, while he does turn in a reasonably  sensitive performance, does not exactly have the kind of A-level actor face we want to spend that much time examining in intimate microscopic detail.  Huston does seem to have a certain appeal for Israeli directors as he also had a fairly large part in Ari Folman's astounding sci-fi mystifier.  "The Congress".

The only thing about this picture that was Israeli was the director, and the background fact that the central protagonist is based on a real life Israeli Sportsman, although portrayed by a non-Jewish actor in English.

Overall, interesting to watch but nothing to write home about.

Amira Casar with her exotic beauty

IS worth writing home about!

FMX chooses the slogan "Beyond the Screen" and selects "Elemental" as its trailer

FMX Logo

FMX, Europe's most influential conference dedicated to Digital Visual Arts, Technologies and Business, has both decided for its FMX 2017 theme and trailer. By choosing the slogan "Beyond the Screen" and selecting the Animationsinstitut's third-year student project Elemental as its trailer, FMX sets the main course and visual scope for the next and 22nd edition of FMX.

ArrowThe FMX 2017 slogan "Beyond the Screen"

The slogan "Beyond the Screen" acknowledges that the times when cinema and TV were the only two screens have long gone. From 2D to 3D stereo to curve to IMAX to Domes, screens are offering a deeper and deeper feeling of immersion, which FMX speakers will explore - including Ang Lee's Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, which combines 3D stereoscopy with 4K and 120 fps and per eye. In addition, the screens beyond the movie theatre, which surround us on a daily basis, will move into focus. Industry experts will address the VR and AR or 360° experiences on smartphones, but also the walls of bedrooms and facades that can be turned into new interactive screens. What's more, fully immersive entertainment such as the Ghostbusters experience at the Madame Tussauds Museum in New York or shows like Cirque du Soleil will be talked about.

Moreover, next year's theme complements the technological with the societal: "Beyond the Screen" is also a call for open-mindedness and awareness, encouraging each and every one of us to look beyond the screen and to think outside the box. To accomplish a conference of this magnitude, FMX has already rounded up a number of board members such as Marvel's Victoria Alonso, Aardman's David Sproxton, Nexus's Christopher O'Reilly, Dr. Richard Marks from Sony Computer Entertainment, Academy-Award-winning VFX Supervisor Rob Legato or Epic Games'Kim Libreri that support the core team in their work during the next months.

ArrowThe FMX 2017 trailer Elemental

The FMX 2017 trailer Elemental delivers the visuals for this multifaceted first program draft - and it breathes the spirit of "Beyond the Screen" as an exemplary blend of technological finesse and humanistic values alike. The trailer depicts four expressive dancers who transform into the elements of air, earth, fire and water, in order to further metamorphose into a completely unique, new form.

Adrian Meyer, the Director of Elemental, which is now further translated into print and online visuals by the team's Choreographer and Storyboard Artist Julie Boehm, Producer Lena-Carolin Lohfink and CG Artist David Bellenbaum, explains the back story:

The inspiration for the film Elemental was the exercise in itself - to create something that is new and fascinating as a group of artists, together. The idea was to illustrate the collective process of creation as a dance in all its facets, focusing on attraction, but also on friction and polarization inside a team.Inspired by the four elements of nature, the different energies and forms of expressions of the dancers clash. And finally they emerge into something new and energetic.

This creative process of combining a historically grown, ancient medium such as dance with a relatively young one such as visual effects was achieved with the latest state-of-the-art technology. Motion capture and nCam camera tracking developed during the DREAMSPACE project were used to track the movements of the dancers and the camera. Further animations were then added, as well as FX simulations with Houdini. Moreover, high-speed live-action footage and CG renderings were integrated to achieve the final look. The first teaser trailer for FMX gives an impression of this impressive look - three more teasers and the final trailer will follow soon.

The “Berlinale Africa Hub” – a new EFM platform for innovation and technology in the African film industry

0
0

Thanks to the support of the German Federal Foreign Office, for the first time the 2017 Berlinale will provide a platform for innovative projects and ideas from the African film industry. The “Berlinale Africa Hub” is an initiative of the European Film Market (EFM) in cooperation with the World Cinema Fund (and the special programme it created in 2016, WCF Africa, which promotes films from Sub-Saharan Africa with the support of the German Federal Foreign Office), with Berlinale Talents (and its sister programme Talents Durban, which supports talented African filmmakers throughout the year), and with the Berlinale Co-Production Market.

As Festival Director Dieter Kosslick says, “The Berlinale has long-standing relationships with numerous African filmmakers, and has fostered the film industry in Africa in a variety of ways. Now, due to the support of the German Federal Foreign Office, with the ‘Berlinale Africa Hub’ we can substantially intensify that commitment. The new platform at the European Film Market will bring the next generation of African filmmakers to Berlin and offer an international forum for current technology, ideas, and developments in the African film industry”.

EFM Director Matthijs Wouter Knol says, “Apart from functioning as a place for African filmmakers to meet up with the international film industry, the ‘Berlinale Africa Hub’ is focused first and foremost on changes in the industry triggered by innovations and technology. Numerous talented African filmmakers and creatives are increasingly using the newest technology to create their content, giving African audiences access to original African content”.

The “Berlinale Africa Hub” is a communication and networking platform for the African film industry and all EFM participants who want to know more about new distribution and marketing models, and virtual reality and 360° projects by African filmmakers and producers, about successful start-ups that are bringing audio-visual content to the African market, and about African VOD and SVOD platforms that have emerged in the last few years.

As part of the Hub, there will be networking events, featuring discussions of the most important issues in sales, distribution, marketing, project packaging, co-production, subsidies, and talent development in the African industry.

Among the participants and partners of the “Berlinale Africa Hub” are companies like the non-profit organization Electric South from Cape Town, the pan-African online platform Mokolo, Rushlake Media from Cologne, and the Goethe Institute.

Electric South provides funding, mentoring, training, and start-up help for digital storytelling - for African audio-visual projects of any kind, from long or short films to documentaries, interactive productions, virtual reality, or mobile content.

The pan-African online platform Mokolo, headquartered in Lagos, is directed both at audiences and at professionals in the AV and IT industries. It offers distribution, information, and networking possibilities.

Cologne’s Rushlake Media (RLM) is a film sales and distribution company focused on digital content and the African market. RLM supports producers, rights holders and institutions with successful marketing strategies in the changing film distribution landscape.

The Goethe Institute is the co-producer of Electric South’s virtual reality initiative New Dimensions, and was instrumental in launching the Mokolo web portal in 2011.

The “Berlinale Africa Hub” will be headquartered in Gropius Park, the new compound that surrounds the historical Martin Gropius Bau, the main venue for the EFM.

Berlinale Talents and Perspektive Deutsches Kino Award “Kompagnon” Fellowship

Berlinale Talents and Perspektive Deutsches Kino have joined forces to award the inaugural “Kompagnon” fellowship. The fellowship will be awarded annually to two directors or screenwriters residing in Germany to support their artistic and professional development.

Berlinale Talents and Perspektive Deutsches Kino are important promoters and springboards for filmmakers and screenwriters living in Germany. We're now providing them with a companion to accompany them on their journey through the German film landscape and to support them on a practical level,” comments Festival Director Dieter Kosslick on the “Kompagnon” fellowship.

Eligible to apply are directors and screenwriters of short or feature films who were part of the last edition of Perspektive Deutsches Kino, as well as permanent residents of Germany who will participate in the “Script Station”, “Doc Station” or “Short Film Station” at the upcoming edition of Berlinale Talents. In addition to a stipend of 5,000 euros (2,500 euros for short films) for the independent development of a screenplay or project, the “Kompagnon” also provides a mentoring programme to help strengthen the filmmakers’ artistic signature, alongside professional coaching and improved industry networking opportunities.

The jury, comprised of the three film professionals Sigrid Hörner, Feo Aladag and Johannes Naber, will select one winner from Berlinale Talents and one from Perspektive Deutsches Kino. The award ceremony will take place on February 17, 2017, during the closing evening of Perspektive Deutsches Kino.

Focus on “Black Worlds” and “Europa Europa” I am not your Negro...

In the Panorama section, the first eleven films from a programme featuring a total of approximately 50 productions have been invited to be screened at the Berlinale, around a third of them for Panorama Dokumente. Two prominent themes have already emerged among the films selected to date: a fresh historically reflective approach to the history of black people in North America, South America and Africa (I Am Not Your Negro, Vazante, The Wound), and Europa Europa, which explores how progressive forces might best defend themselves in light of a zeitgeist that makes it seem as if yesterday never went away (Política, manual de instrucciones, Combat au bout de la nuit).

Further extraordinarily sensitive and artistic works have been invited, and festivalgoers can expect a high degree of formal and thematic diversity from the complete programme – also as regards rare countries of origin such as Bhutan or Kyrgyzstan.

In Focus: Reclaiming Black History

Vazante

Brazil / Portugal

By Daniela Thomas

With Adriano Carvalho, Luana Nastas, Juliana Carneiro da Cunha, Sandra Corveloni, Roberto Audio

World premiere

Daniela Thomas, co-director of many joint productions with Walter Salles, presents her solo directorial debut. Brazil was the last country to officially abolish slavery in its historical form, in 1888. This film’s story (co-authored by Beto Amaral) is set in 1821, one year before the South American nation gained its independence from Portugal. The wealth that is extracted from the country comes in the form of gemstones from the mines of Minas Gerais. The precious jewels are excavated from the belly of the mountain by slaves; still absent today is any significant memorial to the suffering they endured. Although this era represents the foundation upon which today’s Brazil was built, its culture has yet to recover from the monstrosity of these events.

I Am Not Your Negro

France / USA / Belgium / Switzerland

By Raoul Peck

Narrated by Samuel L. Jackson

European premiere

Raoul Peck is also an esteemed guest at the Berlinale. With I Am Not Your Negro, he has embarked on a long overdue reflection on the life of the great African-American writer James Baldwin and his political struggle against racism, whose roots go back to slavery. The black point of view, a black historiography are not yet anchored in mainstream consciousness. History is always written by the victors, and black people were never among them, neither Africans nor African-Americans. In James Baldwin, a powerfully eloquent intellectual took to the stage and set marks that are as invigoratingly crucial to reckon with today as they were 50 years ago. With I Am Not Your Negro and The Young Karl Marx in BerlinaleSpecial, Raoul Peck is represented twice in this year’s festival programme.

The Wound

South Africa / Germany / Netherlands / France

By John Trengove

Résultat d’images pour John Trengove the wound

With Nakhane Touré, Bongile Mantsai, Niza Jay Ncoyini

European premiere

The opening film for this year’s Panorama main programme comes from South Africa. The fabrication of masculinity has long been a consistent theme in Panorama. Here we are permitted to witness the initiation rites of an African tribe inhabiting the territory of the South African Republic. Tradition and modernity collide when an urbanised businessman from Johannesburg resolves to expose his 17-year-old son to the circumcision ceremony of his old tribe. Producer Elias Ribeiro previously delighted festival audiences in Panorama 2015 with Necktie Youth.

Europa Europa

Política, manual de instrucciones (Politics, Instructions Manual)

Spain

By Fernando León de Aranoa

European premiere

Feature film director Fernando León de Aranoa, a repeat guest at Panorama, enables us to take an in-depth look at the situation on the ground in Spain. The media noise concerning Syria, Trump and other earth-shaking events clouds the recognition of the foundation of our future: European politics. We think back to those heady days in West Germany as the Green Party was founded: Podemos was born of similar circumstances and can no longer be contained on the fringe, even as the dark forces of old regroup for an attack thanks to an unprocessed fascist past. A situation of repressed history, one which ticks away like a time bomb in many countries around the globe. This frightening zeitgeist requires the brave intervention of those who don’t want to be forced back behind the goal lines of recent history.

Combat au bout de la nuit (Fighting Through the Night)

Canada

By Sylvain L’Espérance

International premiere

This nearly five-hour-long documentary essay takes us directly to the heart of Europe’s misery: to Athens. In the Greek parliament building, innumerable articles are adopted to an audience of empty seats. The harbour landscape rolls past us, with its endless rows of administrative buildings, which will soon fall into the hands of financiers from other continents. Then we find ourselves right in the middle of an occupation of the tax office by its cleaning personnel – a long-term observation that plays out over the course of 28 days and provides space for empathetic encounters with marginalised individuals caught up in the crisis. The vacuum left behind by technocratic policies is filled by new fascists, who feign gestures of care for the forgotten – a scenario repeated in all of the nations of Europe and beyond its borders.

Casting JonBenet

USA

By Kitty Green

International premiere

Produced by James Schamus and Scott Macaulay, this film is a highly intelligent attempt to revisit the facts surrounding the unsolved violent death of six-year-old “beauty queen” JonBenet Ramsey. What was conceived as a celebration of the American dream family became a nightmare 20 years ago for the ever so omnipotent petty bourgeoisie.

Honeygiver Among the Dogs

Bhutan

By Dechen Roder

With Jamyang Jamtsho Wangchuk, Sonam Tashi Choden

European premiere

This debut feature from director Dechen Roder, who already presented a short film at the Berlinale in 2015, is a veritable Buddhist film noir. Atmospherically dense cinema, dynamically charged between tension and serenity, faith and morality.

Centaur

Kyrgyzstan / France / Germany / Netherlands

By Aktan Arym Kubat

With Nuraly Tursunkojoev, Zarema Asanalieva, Aktan Arym Kubat

World premiere

With a voice that speaks as if from another century and with the popular appeal of a fairy tale, this film tells the saga of the metaphysical bond between horse and humankind and how the former ended up becoming wings for the latter.

Pendular

Brazil / Argentina / France

By Julia Murat

With Raquel Karro, Rodrigo Bolzan

World premiere

Young director Julia Murat is a real discovery. Here she examines the relationship between a dance artist and a sculptor using the means of their particular art forms. A philosophical, original gender treatment of young bohemians poised on the verge of middle age.

Ri Chang Dui Hua (Small Talk)

Taiwan

By Hui-chen Huang

International premiere

A family story of a very special kind, produced by Hou Hsiao-hsien. The mother earns a living as a spirit guide for the deceased at their funerals: she was never at home, always out and about with her girlfriends instead. The daughter now goes to great lengths to attempt to understand her mother. A cosmos opens before us, one which manages to be of universal cultural significance and extremely intimate at the same time.

Untitled

Austria / Germany

By Michael Glawogger, Monika Willi

World premiere

“This film is intended to show an image of the world that can only be created when one does not pursue any subject, or make any value judgement or follow any objective. When one lets one’s self be carried along by nothing more than one’s own curiosity and intuition.” – Director Michael Glawogger passed away in 2014 during shooting for a movie. His editor Monika Willi has realised a fascinating film with material that was shot during a journey of four months and 19 days through the Balkan states, Italy, and Northwest and Western Africa – a journey undertaken in order to observe, to listen and to experience, with attentive eyes, bold and raw.

Other Israel Film Festival 2016

0
0

Celebrating its 10th anniversary The Other Israel Film Festival was held from December 1-8 at the Jewish Community Center of Manhattan (JCC) showcasing nine feature and three short films attracting an audience of about 4000 individuals in mostly sold out screenings.  Viewers were drawn from the membership of the JCC but a large proportion were habitués who had attended past editions of the festival. As its title indicates the festival has a unique profile focusing on minority groups living in Israel with a special emphasis on Palestinians as well as the issues Israel is facing with the objective of fostering a better understanding. As noted by Ravzit Turjeman, the director of the festival “As in past years, we will continue to encourage cinematic expression and creativity that truly celebrates the humanity and daily lives of Arab citizens and other minority groups who are most often overlooked by the mainstream culture.”  This positioning offers a platform for opinions encouraging reflection and change discouraged by the conservative Israeli ministry of culture.  The 2016 festival program included numerous films premiering in the United States and award winning titles with some funding often secured from Israeli agencies.

Without taking sides, The Other Israel Festival with its documentary and dramatic film program places an emphasis on diversity and reflects positions which are relevant for the understanding of the 1.7 million Arabs of Palestinian descent, about 20% of Israel’s population, and the 300,000 foreign workers that have settled in Israel. The JCC screens premieres and previews of topical films throughout the year and also presents other fests such as The ReelAbilities Film Festival and Israel Film Center Festivals showcasing issue oriented productions from around the world which encourage the audience to engage in  change. The Center has the largest collection of films from Israel in the United States and  established The Carole Zabar Center for Film this year, named for the founder and principal sponsor of The Other Israel Film Festival.  This new center will serve to coordinate and enhance the numerous film programs of the Jewish Community Center and plans to develop into a global information platform for films on and about Israel as well as other productions on Jewish issues. Though there are more than 60 Jewish or Jewish themed film festivals in the United States and other film festivals electing to have such films as a side bar, there is no other festival which provides this service. In her words, productions from the Other Israel Film Festival and the other film programs of the Jewish Community Center have an essential function. As Carole Zabar suggests, ”These films and artistic expressions are paving the way to co-existence and to a new, more inclusive culture in the Middle East,”

Junction 48, Udi Aloni, 2016

Aloni’s multinational feature has to date received several awards from the Tribeca, Berlinale and Israel film festivals, a success deriving from its unique mixture of hip-hop music, story and the professional performance of the Cast. Kareem is played by Tamer Nafar who is the principal singer in the Palestinian rap group SAM.  The death of his father prompts Kareem to withdraw into the hip hop scene with songs written by his girlfriend Manar spelling out the oppression Palestinians experience in Israel and the occupied areas.  In a nightclub in Lod where Arabs and Jews live Kareem performs and gets into a violent confrontation with members of the audience who object strongly to the Manar’s lyrics depicting of the fate of the Palestinian Arabs. Kareem and Manar decide to continue using their music as a political instrument. The demolition of a friend’s house to get space for the construction of a museum of tolerance provides an appropriate backdrop to the story. What also creates a dissonant note is the slaying of another friend by an apparent member of an Arab gang. Manar’s male relatives are adamantly opposed to Manar’s involvement with Kareem and her public performance. A concert with both of them is advertised on posters.  She decides to leave her home and join Kareem. According to the director this film was well received by Palestinians as the first Arab film and had a mixed crew, with half Palestinian and half Israelis; an integration unheard of in Israel’s film making industry. The story of the film is based on real events and breaks the stereotypical presentation of Arab women as depicted in Israeli films.

Personal Affairs, Maha Haj, 2016

The director presents a multi-generational portrait of a Palestinian family with comedic and absurd overtones. An elderly married couple lives in Nazaret. The wife Nabeelah takes care of their home and is bored with her husband Saleh who spends most of his time working on a computer. Their life is routinized and shows little personal communication. They have three grown up children, a son, Hisham living in Sweden, another son, Tarek, living in Ramallah and a daughter, Samar. Tarek enjoys life as a perpetual bachelor. Their daughter Samar is pregnant and married to George a car mechanic. George has been unexpectedly cast for a role in an American movie. Samar and George take care of Samar’s live in grandmother who seems to have dementia. During a security check Tarek refuses to identify his female companion Maysa as his girlfriend, triggering a heated argument between them. Though the Palestinian conflict provides background material for the narration, the family conflicts and individual interactions reflect universal themes that apply to many societies.

A.K.A. Nadia, Tova Ascher, 2015

Having a secret affair with Nimer, an activist working for the PLO, Nadiam a young Arab woman decides to leave her family in Israel to join him in London when Nimer is assigned to work there. After some time Nimer is arrested unbeknownst to Nadiam and seemingly disappears. Working in a cleaning shop Nadia plans to return to Israrel. Not being able to use her passport she saves enough money to buy a forged Israeli passport made out to a person named Maya. Assuming the identity of Maya as her own, she succeeds in her returning to Israel and becomes a successful choreographer, gets married to a senior employee working for the Ministry of Justice, Yoav, and has children. Except for occasional  secret meetings with her mother Maya leads a normal life for 20 years when a delegation from an agency considering funding for Maya’s company visits her. One of the members of the delegation turns out to be Nimer who had been granted a pardon after many years in prison.  Nadia born and raised as an Arab woman and Maya who lived as an Israeli successfully for 20 years, she has no escape from her two conflicting identities. Yoav decides that he must report her and she is forced to leave Israel. We see her in the film’s last images in a small London apartment with her daughter visiting her. The feature is well paced drama with convincing performances and mirrors the problems of identity maintenance in a society which forces individuals to assume divergent roles. The rapidly changing socio-political landscape makes it very difficult if not impossible to sustain a solid identity.

Harmonia, Ori Sivan, 2016

The festival was opened by Harmonia, a compelling multi-generational drama firmly embedded in the classical musical scene. The story is derived from Genesis. Set in contemporary Israel the drama involves the harpist Sad Sarah, who is married to Abraham, the conductor of the Jerusalem Philharmonic.  Sarah grows close to Hagar a young Palestinian horn player, who just joined the  orchestra. Because Sad and Abraham have not been able conceive a child Hagar offers to be their surrogate and bears them a son, Ben. Hagar eventually leaves the orchestra to be with her father, a writer.  Ben turns out to have an extraordinary musical talent but refuses to submit to the authority of his parents. He has a fractured relationship with his mother Sarah, apparently sensing that reality differs from the appearance he is living in. Years later Sarah and Abraham are able to conceive and they have a second son, Isaac. Isaac is not able to live up to the musical expectations of his father and fails to perform in a public concert much to Abraham’s dismay. Hagar had returned to the orchestra and when Isaac disappears after his failed performance she finds him in a night club playing the violin in a band directed by his half-brother Ben. His shyness has disappeared and he feels at ease with the band and the audience. Staying in tune with Ben, Isaac offers a great rendition. Harmonia provides  a joyful dramatic and emotional experience, has flawless dialog and score as well as persuasive acting and an expertly filmed adaptation of a biblical story. In short it is a delightful film not to be missed.

46th International Film Festival Rotterdam
25 January - 5 February 2017

International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) has announced the first titles selected for the Bright Future programme, one of the four sections the festival programme consists of. Bright Future focuses on up-and-coming filmmakers with their own style and vision. The titles in competition will be announced in early January, but IFFR will now already reveal the first world premieres and the past year’s film highlights selected for Bright Future.

Many of the young filmmakers will be screening their work to an international audience for the first time in Rotterdam. This year, this includes the global premieres of films such as the acutely observed A Brief Excursion (Croatia, 2017) by filmmaker Igor Bezinović as well as Michel Lipkes´ second feature film Strange But True (Extraño pero verdadero, Mexico, 2017), a dark narrative about lovers who work as garbage collectors in Mexico City shot in black and white.

A lot of the films now announced have won prizes since their première in 2016. For instance, Antes que cante el gallo (Before the Rooster Crows, Puerto Rico, 2016) by Arí Maniel Cru won the Yellow Robin Award at IFFR Curacao 2016. Actor Andrzej Seweryn won the prize for Best Actor at the Locarno festival for his role in Jan Matuszyński's The Last Family (Poland, 2016). And, filmmaker Zhang Dalei won the Taipei Golden Horse Award for his wonderful debut The Summer is Gone (China, 2016).

A considerable number of films in the Bright Future programme were co-financed by IFFR's Hubert Bals Fund and co-production market CineMart. These include Gastón Solnicki's mesmerising Kékszakállú (Argentina, 2016), the exceptionally original debut All the Cities of the North (Serbia/Bosnia and Herzegovina /Montenegro, 2016) by filmmaker Dane Komljen and Alessandro Commodin’s excellent second feature film I tempi felici verrano presto (Happy Times Will Come Soon,Italy, 2016).

Trailer IFFR 2017
46th International Film Festival Rotterdam
25 January - 5 February 2017

The campaign for the 46th International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2017 is ‘Welcome to Planet IFFR’. It is the ninth time Rotterdam-based design agency 75B has created the campaign for IFFR.

For forty-five years already, International Film Festival Rotterdam has been made up of many different elements: filmmakers, film, audiences, professionals, sponsors, awards, volunteers, the city of Rotterdam. Together, all of these elements make up Planet IFFR. Not so much a physical place as a symbol of a state of being: the openness in which you can be surprised by different elements of cinema. Planet IFFR is the place where people come together from all over, with a wide range of backgrounds, to explore new and different ways of seeing. Where audiences are inspired to see, to listen and to be heard.

Like a spinning planet, the festival is in motion 365 days a year. This constant movement represents IFFR’s ongoing ambition to surprise and to discover, and characterises IFFR as an organisation and as a brand. Guided by the common thread of cinema in all its forms, the many films and their makers expand the festival's vision of our universe and ourselves. IFFR also has an unstinting ambition to innovate, and is therefore active in many areas all year round: from Video-on-Demand and the monthly KINO film nights to supporting the production of films.

Festival director Bero Beyer: “Everyone is welcome at Planet IFFR: from festival visitors to filmmakers, from day trippers and casual passers-by to film fanatics. Everyone is free to roam the planet, wherever they please. Discover the caves, climb the peaks and dare peer down to the deep valley floors. And who knows, maybe new areas may be opened up in the years ahead, which at present are still completely unknown.”

Trailer IFFR 2017

The campaign image ‘Planet IFFR’ was designed by Rotterdam-based design agency 75B. The now iconic tiger logo has been translated into three dimensions, reflecting the multifaceted nature of IFFR as a colourful planet. The design reflects an organic, charming entity with virgin territory ripe for exploration lying alongside previously mapped-out domains. Once again this year, the campaign will be carried through into a celebratory limited edition of the Warsteiner beer bottle available during the festival.

To attract attention to the Festival these inquisitive animals are again making their rounds through nocturnal Berlin. “Berlin is big and this year we’ll again follow the bear tracks to some typical spots in the capital,” remarks a delighted Berlinale Director Dieter Kosslick. Once more the motifs have been designed by Velvet, a Swiss advertising agency.

The six posters in the series will be visible around town as of mid-January 2017. They will also be on sale at the Berlinale Online Shop starting January 16.
