New York: Tribeca Film Festival 2016 Innovations

$

0

As in past editions the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival continues to expand traditional film festival limits to embrace new areas as eagerly anticipated by its audience. Before the Berlin Film Festival incorporated innovative television in its program schedule several years ago, Tribeca had already shown in 2004 the last episode of the hit show Friends. This year it presented 16 television programs, ‘The Best of the Small Screen on the Big Screen’ incorporating series finales of HBO’s Six Feet Under and the complete O.J.: Made in America program. It also premiered The Night Manager (AMC), the final episode of The Good Wife (CBS) and a sneak preview of ‘Grace and Frankie (Netflix) to name some others. With the boundaries between the media getting smaller each year and established directors eager to produce more programs and features for television, the television section of Tribeca will surely become bigger. The fest also provided for the first time a venue for The Whitney Museum and the Guggenheim Museum holding screenings.  The Metropolitan Museum of Art featured Tribeca’s superb opening night documentary First Monday in May’ about the 2014 annual Met Ball fundraiser at the Costume Institute. The documentary provided a stunning presentation and analysis of the event.  Themed ‘China: Through the Looking Glass’ the impact of Chinese culture on western designers was demonstrated.  As depicted by the documentary, The Met Ball attracted social, political and media celebrities as well as other glitterati and exceeded its fundraising goals.

A focus on interactive story telling had been established by the Tribeca Film Institute in 2012 anticipating the tremendous growth of digital storytelling and virtual reality use was well reflected in the 2016 edition. The current expansion included full time activities at the festival hub on Varick Street with numerous events open to the public which prompted long waiting lines for the most appealing programs. The hub schedule included an experiential section with interactive and VR installations in the Storyscapes part and more than 15 VR projects in the Virtual Arcade. This virtual reality bazaar covered 18 projects showcasing the potential of the new medium’s 360 degree perception.  With its broad range the VR experience offered a mind expanding exposure for novices, though the viewing headsets, still a bit bulky, were sometimes heavy on the head.  In past applications VR has been used commercially for real estate ventures, by the Chinese to increase tourism, and has been the driving force for gaming for many years. Now VR has morphed into a true art form. Spectators are able to move within the images and engage in immersive viewing of brief productions on a wide range of themes from the fate of a Gaza family, horror scenarios, science fiction ventures, and romantic episodes to environmental issues. That section was one of the most popular attractions of the hub. On one stand products  using   transcranial electrical stimulation were explained  which under the guidance of a physician supposedly enhanced cognitive development; another stand promoted  a vest with physical feedback and vibration functionality leading to a  neosensory music experiences. Stepping across the hallway visitors could test their minds ability moving balls without touching them or spend several minutes in a ‘coffin’  reliving through sound and smell the last moments of a celebrities life. In one section the world’s biggest hacking conference was held. The TFI Interactive and Playground addressed the interest in hacking, digital security, and innovative media technologies with a strong emphasis on involving the audience through hands on experiences. It is noteworthy that the Virtual Arcade incorporated many issue and change oriented production’s and that for the first time a day long market pace for digital and online content was held, the Tribeca Digital Creators Market, presenting screenings and discussions. A principal sponsor for the Victual Arcade Imagination Day was the Bloomberg Philanthropies.

This year’s Tribeca expansions edition continues a longlist of innovations ever since the fest was established in 2001.  Before YouTube existed Amazon and TFF held a digital short film context in 2005 with over 1000 entries. The first cell phone shot film This Bad in Afghanistan, a 70 minute film produced for $200 by Cyrus Frisch premiered at Tribeca in 2007.  Three years later Tribeca went online with some of its best features and shorts. The same year the Tribeca Disruptive Innovation Awards were introduced to honor those innovations which disrupted in-the-box mindsets and created new values and markets. Accompanied by breakout seminars this full day event is intellectually stimulating and continues to be one of the most thought provoking parts of the festival. The 2016 awards honored more than 20 individuals including Dr. Richard Leakey for his life time achievements in the environmental and wildlife area, the Theodor Parker prize to Nate Parker for his feature The Birth of a Nation on Nat Turner’s slave rebellion, the Suskind family for, through cartoon imagery and scripts, finding a way of communication for their son Owen who fell silent at the age of three, and Alec Ross for his ground breaking book The Industries of the Future. Others received awards for reforming the juvenile justice system, providing successful training to prison inmates, and initiating online credit avenues.

In a packed breakout session Eric Ross, a former aide to Hillary Clinton, presented a panel on his position on the knowledge industry and the importance of controlling massively expanding data. This control provides power. Scientific and technological breakthroughs could provide solutions to massive problems our societies face though we live in a period of growing uncertainties. Little can be done about growing social inequalities. As a fellow panelist pointed out the conditions for change may be found in control of information and technologies but the principal factor in inducing change is to instill the motivation to act which is more difficult to attain than the mastery of computers or generation of more knowledge. It was striking that the panel’s emphasis on science and technology and motivations is closely tied to the German philosopher Juergen Habermas’ view that the ideology of science and technology masks class bound interest and his view that our principle problem today is the inability to motivate people. ‘The Tribeca Imagination Day  Powered by the Hatchery’ , run by Richard Branson, sponsored  by Bloomberg Philanthropies and located at Tribeca’s hub,  investigated in 16 sessions, with technology and science experts, artists and intellectuals, themes such as artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, medical developments, virtual reality, identity formation  and other relevant issues.

Another of Tribeca’s innovations that has grown since it was introduced in 2011 is its inclusion of a gaming focused section and the establishment of the TFI Media Fund with grants from $50.000 to $100.00, as well as focusing on immersive transmedia works through the 2013 Storyscapes program. The 2014 Virtual Reality / Interactive section and Games for Change Festival were set up in 2014, followed in 2015 by DEF-CON the hacking conference and Tribeca Talks: These sections have been expanded, in particular with the establishment of the VR Arcade this year.

As evidenced by numerous documentaries shown this year at the Tribeca Film Festival, the fest has kept its hard edge by critically covering US and international issues.   In an outstanding presentation in a multimedia format the documentary The Bomb closed the festival preceded by panel with expert activists and filmmakers.  Guided by the goal to revive the debate about the danger of nuclear weapons the one-hour production tracked on six screens surrounding the audience and chronicled the development of nuclear weapons including archival material not shown before. A live score accompanied the screening. A panel preceding the screening included the film maker Smiriti Keshari and activists like Michael Douglas. They stressed that nuclear weapons were the most significant threat we are facing today and the great need to educate the public. Michael Douglas, who is now working on documentary about Boeing’s involvement with a nuclear accident, pointed out that public education about nuclear issues through television and film is a myth. ABC’s ‘The Day After’ is the only exception. Education is the domain of documentary filmmakers.  But as ‘The Bomb’ showed, ever since Hiroshima, the greatest nuclear disasters have been caused by the nuclear energy industry. This includes the worst cases of the 1979 near meltdown of the Three Mile Island reactor, the 1986 meltdown of Chernobyl and the 2011 meltdown of Fukushima which resulted respectively from an operational mistake, political orders overriding safety procedures, and the breakdown of the cooling systems aggravated by the tsunami. Of the existing 15,000 nuclear weapons 90% are controlled by the USA and Russia, with the remainder held by seven other countries, and the design of new smaller nuclear weapons rendering global security increasingly precarious. Past experience shows that with the threat of aging nuclear plants, the unresolved issues of nuclear waste disposal and the problems of maintaining safely, aging nuclear facilities constitute an equally large threat to our existence.

All major international film festivals introduce each year new more differentiated thematic programs and technologies driving all aspects of media developments. Tribeca is unique because compared to  North American film festivals it has proven to be the most innovative one which like the Berlinale is not restricted to the trade but open to the public,

The second Animation Day in Cannes took place on May 18th at the Salon La Renaissance, the Palais des Festivals and the UAE pavilion at the Marche du film, putting for a second year animation on the map of Cannes screenings and events and generating audiences from the animation industry and beyond, along with animation cinephiles and festival professionals.

The two panel discussions, one on Virtual Reality and the impact that it has in the animation world of filmmaking and one on Animation that matters and inspires, which concluded the events, created a platform for interaction and raised topics of great importance for the animation industry, including how to fund and make a successful animation and how what are the secrets to worldwide distribution, widely discussed between the co-panelists Jonathan Parienti (HorYou CEO) and Marie-Claude Beauchamp (Producer).

Two parallel screenings of recent animation short films and trailers of newly completed features were presented at the Palais des Festivals and the Salon La Renaissance.

The awarded UAE feature film ‘Bilal’ by Ayman Jamal received great response at its second screening during animation day, following its Cannes premiere at Olympia on May 14th.

Director Ayman Jamal, taking part in the final Animation Day panel, spoke about the challenges of creating an animation that will be equally successful and made for the mass audiences. He also referred to the fact that introducing a different type of hero as Bilal and trying to break the western stereotypes was also not an easy task.

The film continues its festival circuit journey next month at Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Animation Day in Cannes, after a successful second year is already setting a rendezvous with the entire world of animation on May 18th 2017 for a third edition.

The creative teams of the selected films are currently attending the first week’s sessions – The Time Warner Foundation Completion Labs – taking place May 23-27th in New York City.

The IFP Narrative Filmmaker Labs are the only labs that support first-time feature directors with projects in post-production as they complete, market and distribute their films. The Labs provide filmmakers with the technical, creative and strategic tools necessary to launch their films and careers.

Now entering its twelfth year with over 100+ first-feature filmmakers supported, the community of Labs alumni is comprised of some of the most exciting and critically-acclaimed artists working today across film, television, new media and VR; these include multi-hyphenate creators such as Amy Seimetz (“The Girlfriend Experience”), Alex Karpovsky (“Girls”), David Lowery (PETE’S DRAGON), Dee Rees (BESSIE), Andrew Dosunmu (MOTHER OF GEORGE), Tim Sutton (DARK NIGHT), Jennifer Phang (ADVANTAGEOUS), and Terence Nance (AN OVERSIMPLIFICATION OF HER BEAUTY).

Recent 2015 IFP Labs Fellows have been already making their mark on the festival circuit. Of the ten selected projects, seven have already premiered at top festivals including SXSW, Tribeca, Los Angeles Film Festival, Slamdance and Bentonville and two fellows are shooting new projects this summer.

“To highlight and support diverse stories and storytellers has always been the mission of the IFP Labs and of IFP as a whole,” says Joana Vicente, Executive Director of IFP and the Made in NY Media Center. “This year’s Narrative Lab Fellows are a perfect example of this, and the boundless creativity and diversity in their work is evident in just how wide-ranging these films’ settings are: from Kyiv, Ukraine, to the Alaskan fish canneries, to right here in Brooklyn’s Borough Park neighborhood.”

Under the artistic direction of IFP Head of Programming Amy Dotson and Program Manager and Producer Zach Mandinach, the supervising 2016 Narrative Lab leaders include Jon Reiss, director/producer and author (BOMB IT!; Think Outside the Box Office), Susan Stover, producer (WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE; HIGH ART; HAPPY ACCIDENTS); Pierce Varous, producer (ALWAYS SHINE; H.) and founder of Nice Dissolve; Scott Macaulay, Filmmaker Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief and producer (JULIEN-DONKEY BOY). URANIUM FILM FESTIVAL RIO AWARD WINNERS 2016

Films from Australia, Brazil, Denmark, Italy, Spain and Switzerland winning the Yellow Einstein Award of the 6th International Uranium Film Festival in Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro’s 6th International Uranium Film Festival awarded  films from 8 countries: Australia, Brazil, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Six films received the Yellow Einstein Award and 4 films the festival’s Special Recognition. In total the festival screened in the cinematheque of Rio de Janeiro’s Modern Art Museum (MAM) 49 films from all over the world about atomic power, uranium, nuclear security and radioactive risks. 13 filmmakers and producers were present in Rio. The best and most important films were awarded by the festival’s international jury.

„Since the beginning of time radiation is part of human mankind. There is natural radiation coming from space and from the rocks under our feet. And because of the discovering and use of the powerful element uranium we have in addition the „man-made“ radiation coming from the contamination of our planet - for example - through mining and by more than 2000 atomic bombs that were blown up in the Atmosphere just by the five A-Bomb states USA, Russia, France, United Kingdom and China“, says festival director Norbert G. Suchanek.

Radioactivity is invisible, has no smell no taste.  „It’s a huge challenge to film something that you cannot see, but something that still can hurt or even kill you“, says Suchanek.  „For that the making of nuclear films is sometimes a risky business. And the Uranium Film Festival has the duty to honor and to award these filmmakers and their work.“

The Uranium Film Festival trophy  is a piece of art produced by Brazilian waste-material-artist Getúlio Damado, who lives and works in the famous artist quarter Santa Teresa in Rio de Janeiro where the first International Uranium Film Festival was held in May 2011. Getúlio creates the Uranium Film Festival Award from waste material, that he finds in the streets of Santa Teresa. He uses also old watches to remember the first atomic bomb dropped over Hiroshima. Watches in Hiroshima stopped exactly at 8:15 in the morning when the A-bomb exploded on August 6th, 1945. „For the last six years our Award had the nickname Yellow Oscar. But this year in April the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood prohibited us the use of the name Oscar. For that we had to find a new name. For that from now on the Uranium Film Festival Award is called the Yellow Einstein“, explains festival director Norbert G. Suchanek

SPECIAL RECOGNITION

AWARE(link is external)

The Netherlands, 2014, Director and Producer Tineke van Veen, Documentary, 14 min, http://www.tinekevanveen.nl(link is external)

The film-installation elaborates on the cleaning of the landscape, people who clean the landscape and the landscape itself. Landscape conceived as a space, both natural and cultivated, dynamic and cultural, an environment in which we “stay”, move, develop and exist, where social- and power relations play an important role. Landscape as a reflection, as a form of exchange and identification. How do we relate to this traumatized landscape? The evacuees are not only confronted with loss of their native soil, there is also the problem of no return because of nuclear radiation. These effects are much more severe, if not unsolvable. Both areas, hit by the tsunami and the devastated Daiichi power plant, has to be cleaned. The interviews deal with the persons who clean these areas, voluntary or paid, his motivation and his traumatic relationship with the affected and ruined landscape. The Japanese cultivated landscape has a centuries-old tradition and a special relationship with its residents. Old Japanese gardens are slowly overgrown by new nature. Meanwhile residents will be given permission to return to the ‘clean’ landscape.

Broken Arrow. Nuclear Accident in Palomares (Operación Flecha Rota. Accidente Nuclear en Palomares)(link is external)

Two of them explode their conventional charge and due to the strong wind radioactive material is scattered over the region. An intensive search is started to find the fourth bomb...  Director's statement: „2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the nuclear accident in Palomares (Almeria, Spain). For half a century, 1500 human beings have lived misled surrounded by several kgs of plutonium scattered by wind and rain in the Mediterranean and around. This is the story of a lie born during the Cold War, the Franco dictatorship and the genesis of the nuclear industry in Spain. A still alive, open story, in demand for a final solution. "

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

About one year before the Fukushima reactor exploded, the International Uranium Film Festival (IUFF) was founded in 2010 in Santa Teresa, the famous artist quarter in the heart of Rio de Janeiro.  It is the first festival of its kind that addresses all nuclear and radioactive issues. The aim is to inform about nuclear power, uranium mining, nuclear weapons and the risks of radioactivity. Independent documentaries and movies are the best tool to bring that information to a diverse international public. And a festival is the best way to bring the films to the people! The horror of atomic bombs and those who suffered from them, and nuclear accidents like Three Mile Island and Chernobyl should never be forgotten - nor repeated. Then the nuclear accident in Fukushima happened just two months before the first edition of the International Uranium Film Festival in May 2011 in Rio de Janeiro.

Uranium mining, fracking, nuclear accidents, atomic bomb factories, nuclear waste:  No matter if you are in favour or against the use of nuclear power, all people should be informed about the risks. The International Uranium Film Festivals creates a neutral space to throw light on all nuclear issues. It stimulates new productions, supports "nuclear" filmmaking and the discussion about the nuclear question in Brazil and worldwide.

56th Krakow Film Festival has started

The 56th edition of Krakow Film Festival, one of the oldest and the most recognisable events dedicated to documentary, animated and short films, has started on 29th May. During 8 days of the festival, the viewers will have a chance to watch, in 4 competitions and 12 non-competing sections, over 250 films from Poland and around the world, the majority of which will be shown in Poland for the first time.

In four competitions, 114 films will vie for the recognition of the jury and the audience. The best productions from all corners of the globe will participate in the International Documentary Film Competition, International Short Film Competition, Music Documentary Film Competition DocFilmMusic and in the National Competition.

The opening ceremony of the Festival was honoured with the world première of the documentary film "21 x New York City" by Piotr Stasik. It is an intimate portrait of the city and its inhabitants, a remarkable story about loneliness accompanying people living in the Western society of the 21st century. The film takes part in the international documentary film competition and national competition.

This year, the special guest at the Festival is Swedish cinematography - within the section "Focus on Sweden," the latest documentary and short films will be shown. The section was inaugurated on Monday, May 30 by the screening of the film"The Swedish Theory of Love" with the participation of the author - the well-known, uncompromising director Erik Gandini. The documentary film is an attempt to confront the stereotypical, extremely idealistic perception of Sweden (and the Nordic countries in general) as the land of happiness.

One of the most interesting events of the first days of the Festival is undoubtedly the screening of the monumental work by Sergey Miroshnichenko"Rings of the World," opening this year's series "Olympic Games in the eyes of the masters". The Olympic Games in Sochi are the most expensive Olympic event in history, which was meant to show the power of Putin's Russia by their scale. Splendour also flows from the film, showing the meticulous preparations, beautiful landscapes and spectacular, breath-taking shots of sport disciplines. However, the Olympic athletes shine brighter against this background - dreaming about medals, overcoming their fears and weaknesses, raising the spirit of sports above social and political divisions.

This year's Dragon of Dragons award, for the contribution to the international documentary cinema, goes to Marcel Łoziński, an eminent director, documentary filmmaker and educator, one of the best known Polish filmmakers, the winner of countless film festivals and many prestigious awards. The official presentation of the award is held on May 31, Tuesday. The ceremony will be accompanied by the screening of three unique films by the artist: the 1994 Academy Award nominee "89 mm from Europe," 2009 award-winner at Krakow Film Festival "Poste Restante," and "Anything Can Happen," which was chosen the best Polish documentary film of the century this year.

Traditionally, there are also screenings of films awarded at the partner festivals ("Festival Award Winners"), Polish documentary, animated and short films, directed both by young filmmakers and by acclaimed directors ("Panorama of the Polish Film"), the review of short films nominated for the European Film Award in 2015 ("Short Matters!"), screenings for children and teenagers (Kids & Youth), the most famous documentary films of the last year from the most diverse corners of the world ("World Stories"), films made in European countries ("Somewhere in Europe") and documentary dedicated to science and scientists (“Docs+Science”). In the open-air cinema Kino pod Wawelem, five documentary and feature films under the banner of "Beatlemania" will be shown. The other highlights of the programme are Krzysztof Kieślowski retrospective, held to honour the 20th anniversary of the artist's death, and a review of films dedicated to Andrzej Wajda, on the occasion of the master's 90th birthday.

Film professionals are invited to participate in the Industry Zone, a series of events dedicated to filmmakers. The pillar of the Industry Zone is Krakow Film Market – a digital video library, containing about 250 documentary, short and animated films, including the festival's competition films and sections prepared by the partners. One of the highlights is DOC LAB POLAND featuring workshops for directors and producers of Polish documentary films. DOC LAB POLAND includes two pitching sessions: DOCS TO START (Polish projects in development) and DOCS TO GO! (Polish documentaries in post-production/editing-stage). There are also presentations, master classes, networking events and the industry conference with Swedish filmmakers planned.

This year, Krakow Film Festival will host about 850 Polish and international visitors: directors, producers, festival representatives and over 25 000 viewers are expected.

56th Krakow Film Festival is held from May 29 to June 5, 2016.

IsolaCinema.org

During the 1st and 5th of June at the 12th international film festival Kino Otok – Isola Cinema, we’ll be looking into stories whose motor is movement in itself. By experiencing stories of migrations pushed aside – geographical or intimate – individuals, people like us, will unfold from the anonymous masses. For five early summer days, Isola will once again become a film and social venue with a programme of films screening on Manzioli square and other locations.

With festival guests from Africa to Europe

On the 2nd of June critically acclaimed director Yared Zeleke will present Lamb, the first Ethiopian film to be displayed in Cannes last year, to Isola’s public on Manzioli’s square. The tale of an honest relationship between an animal and a child on Ethiopian’s mountain pastures brings a vision of a different, social, not economic modernisation. Two film stories of Kino Otok – Isola Cinema’s old acquaintances tell the story of African refugees in Europe. Marko Grba Singh’sAbdul & Hamza is a film about two Somalian’s migrants from Africa at the far east of Serbia. Logbook_Serbistan is a doku-drama by the island’s returnee Želimir Žilnik. In it refugees from ruined African, Near and Middle East areas reconstruct frightening and moving scenes from their exodus. Peter Schreiner, another festival guest, talks about the consequences of the refugee crisis through the meeting of a Somalian named Zakarie, who is on the run from the civil war, and an elderly Italian lady Guilia in Lampedusa.

We are also observing European crisis and the identities connected to them. In Eloy Domínguez Serén’s film No cow on the ice, a young Galician filmmaker runs to Sweden because he hasn’t got a job in Spain. Bosnian director Vladimir Tomić spent the year of 1992 in a Copenhagen’s floating hotel where thousands refugees from Bosnia and Hercegovina were stationed. In his film Flotel Europa which will be screened on Manzioli’s square, he will use homemade VHS footage to move us a quarter of a century back in time to the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia and the Bosnian war.

Forward in the past with archive footage

Documentary maker Alina Marazzi tells the touching story of her late mother with the help of footage her grandfather collected in For One More Hour. Debut guest in Slovenia, the author takes us back in time to the Italian sexual revolution and feminism of the 60’s and 70’s in her film We Want Roses Too.  With the author’s contribution to the omnibus 14 reels, a collective experiment which is also featuring Slovenian direct Davorin Marc, we will be intimately travelling through the city as a film figure and starting point for future thinking.

The ocean will also be on the screen

The sea will also be connecting us to the screen in seaside cinema theatres – we will be watching the fishermen’s’ journey and their determination to preserve their freedom in Joaquim Pinto and Nuno Leonel’s film Fish tail. Director Pinto will also be presented with his self-portrait What now? Remind me, which looks at the world beyond his own mortality after living with HIV for two decades, and his debut feature film Tall stories which tells the story of a growing twelve-year-old boy Miguel, and also talks about unconventional friendships and rising sexuality. However, this film will be a part of Otok In Ljubljana. Dawn will be joining us from the Baltic sea, a tragicomedy on Latvian kolkhoz which is a film based on Eisenstein’s unrealised film project and made by the festival guest Laila Pakalnina.

CANNES & CANNES MARKET DAILIES

Cannes 2016: Films we hope to catch Later : LESLIE HOWARD The Man who gave a damn.

Alex Deleon <filmfestivals.com> There are so many films on view at Cannes in dozens of  screening rooms on the main festival grounds and scattered about town -- in the Marché du Cinéma film market as well as the official selection -- and so much to do beside film watching -- that it is simply impossible to see all the films, or even half of the films, one would rush out to see under normal circumstances. Cannes is not normal. Cannes is the ultimate embodiment of the ...

TREZOROS The Martyrdom of the Spanish Jews of Greece - A precious WWII Document

Again by accident on night number two I came across my second Market documentary discovery,  "Treasures" (Trezoros in  Ladino) of all places in the lobby of the Majestic Hotel which is directly in front of the Grand Palais, loaded with Festival VIPs, and is a late evening hot spot for film confabs over expensive drinks. Floating through the buzzing scene around midnight i was spotted and cornered by croatian director Arsen Ostojić whose  2012 Yugoslavian postwar trag...

Cannes: Documentaries in Focus A triple play from Greece, Japan and India

Alex Deleon <filmfestivals.com> The first few days of the festival, oddly enough, I started my viewing lineup with three Market documentaries. Normally one needs a special black badge to get into market screenings in the Grand Palais but there are numerous other market screenings in hotels and other locations around town where my yellow Press badge was good enough, or pure happenstance -- being at the right place at the right time did the trick.   On my first working day I wand...
