70th Edinburgh FF to close with Whisky Galore!

Edinburgh International Film Festival is delighted to announce that the much anticipated remake of the iconic Scottish comedy Whisky Galore! will close the 70th edition of the festival on Sunday 26th June 2016.

Inspired by Sir Compton Mackenzie’s 1947 novel, Whisky Galore! is written by award-winning screenwriter Peter McDougall and based on the true story of a shipwreck off the coast of Eriskay of a ship sailing for America with a cargo of export-only alcohol during World War II. The Scottish islanders, in the midst of a wartime drought of whisky, are determined to take advantage of an unexpected windfall despite opposition from the local Home Guard Captain.

Shot on location entirely in Scotland, Whisky Galore! features a fantastic ensemble cast of well-known Scottish actors, including Gregor Fisher (Love Actually), James Cosmo (Braveheart), Kevin Guthrie (Sunset Song), and Sean Biggerstaff (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), while also starring is Eddie Izzard (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian) playing the uptight Home Guard, Captain Waggett. The film also introduces new talents Naomi Battrick and Ellie Kendrick.

Director Gillies Mackinnon said: “I am delighted that Whisky Galore! will close the Edinburgh International Film Festival. This feels like the perfect and most appropriate world premiere for a film which is the remake of a Scottish film classic.” Producer Iain Maclean adds: “I remember watching the film many times, as a child growing up on the Hebrides, on television and of course in black and white. It’s wonderful to bring Sir Compton Mackenzie's story about whisky and the islanders to a new generation of film fans through this year’s EIFF.”

Artistic Director Mark Adams said: “We are absolutely delighted to be staging the world premiere of Whisky Galore! as closing night of this year’s festival. It is a delightful adaptation of a much-loved classic and will wrap up our 70th edition in memorable style.”

Whisky Galore! is produced by Iain Maclean and Alan J Wands.

IFFBoston is more than just a spring festival.  For more than 13 years, it has grown into the best way to experience independent film in, around, and about Boston.

It starts with the main hosting venues.  The Somerville, Brattle, and Coolidge Corner Theatres are the premier independent cinemas in the area, each with their own niche of iconic offerings that make them destination moviehouses throughout the year.  These range from retrospective series at the Brattle, to the Science on Screen and Sounds of Silents events at the Coolidge, to live performances at Somerville.

Beyond the week of the Festival, IFFB hosts special screenings showcasing recent Festival favorites or new off-season Festival-worthy films. For example, in 2015, IFFB year-round fans had the chance to see a preview screening of Room, with an Academy-Award-winning performance from Brie Larson, before its widespread theatrical release.

Of course, there is also the flagship IFFB event, eight days of films and friends, panels and parties each spring.

Some newcomers will happen by a marquee or a queue, be intrigued, and see a show.  Others might arrive seeking out a particular film.  Those folks have a nice time, happy to be in an area where such artistic outlets exist.

Then there are those that indulge in a weekend or the whole week-plus-long event.  These folks gorge themselves on a half-dozen, dozen, or perhaps dozen-and-a-half narratives, documentaries, panels, and/or slates of shorts.  A fantastic cinematic splurge, but doing it only once misses out on the real strength of IFFBoston.

Like a great movie that you find more depth from with additional viewings, IFFBoston is best experienced over time.  Film fans that discover the festival mark their calendars for its return.  The growing crowd of familiar faces adds to the flavor of the event for returnees.  Because of its prestige in the region, IFFB is a magnet for artists and films with ties to Boston and, more broadly, New England.  Wherever their home, filmmakers that come once look forward to coming back.  This collective through-line allows the festival’s frequent flyers to see directors interpret new material, watch performers mining new characters, witness documentarians tackling a new subject, and relive their own nostalgic journeys through local and personal history.

Some of the more recent examples of these through-lines:

IFFB Opening Night veterans had the chance to see James Ponsoldt – the first two-time director of an IFFB opener – handle two different kinds of relationships.  First, the Miles Teller / Shailene Woodley led coming-of-age tale, The Spectacular Now (IFFB 2013) – also with Brie Larson.  Then, the Jason Segel / Jesse Eisenberg portrayal of the interaction between novelist David Foster Wallace and Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky in The End of the Tour (IFFB 2015).

Joshua Oppenheimer’s devastatingly unforgettable, and Oscar-nominated, documentary The Act of Killing (IFFB 2013) explored the 1965 Indonesian genocide through unprecedentedly revealing interviews.  Release of this footage uncovered information that rippled through a family’s history, giving rise to a cinematic coda in IFFB 2015’s follow-up, The Look of Silence.

Actor/writer/producer Brit Marling is a multi-year IFFB veteran, with 2011’s Another Earth and 2013’s The East, that had a multi-film return in 2015 with appearances in both The Keeping Room and Posthumous.  The math geek in me wonders if this is an elaborate biennial Fibonacci sequence that will have her return again with a three-film effort in 2017 and five appearances at IFFB 2019.  But that’s probably just me.

Along with Marling’s IFFB debut in 2011, Mark Sandman, the late frontman of Boston-based international indie-rock legends, Morphine, had his story told in Cure for Pain: The Mark Sandman Story.  Four years later, 2015’s Morphine: Journey of Dreams took a fresh look at the band’s arc through the eyes of the surviving band members and their peers.

Long-time fans of Boston culture could continue the walk down memory lane with a trio of films in the recent past.

2015’s I Am What I Play remembers the peak era of rock radio (‘60s-‘80s) through the eyes, ears, and anecdotes of four iconic DJs: Toronto’s Dave Marsden, New York’s Meg Griffin, Seattle’s Pat O’Day, and Boston’s own Charles Laquidara – who famously took over on WBCN for Peter Wolf when Wolf left to be the voice of The J. Geils Band.

A more targeted timeframe was covered by 2014’s Life on the V: the Story of V66, which charted the meteoric rise and demise of the mid-‘80s Boston-area music video UHF channel, V66.  (For readers under 30, UHF channels were the ones on the second dial of TVs, back when TVs had dials.  For readers under 20, ask Siri what a “dial” is.)

Whenever he has a new film, local-kid-made-good Bobcat Goldthwait brings it to the IFFBoston audience. It’s hard to imagine that he could bring a more personal film than Call Me Lucky (IFFB 2015).  In the 1980s, Boston was a focal point for several aspects of the American zeitgeist.  Among them: music, ice cream, and comedy.  The prior several films bear witness to the important of music in the area.  Call Me Lucky explores the life of Barry Crimmins, perhaps the strongest driving force of the Boston comedy scene at the time.  Crimmins was a mentor and protector for many comedians that launched from Boston to broader national appeal, including Goldthwait himself (whose nickname is a kind of homage to Crimmins).  For all his influence on comedy, the circumstances of his life gave Crimmins’ public life a second act of real and lasting impact for society at large.  Somehow, Call Me Lucky is able to tell two otherwise distinct stories in the same film because they are two facets of the life of a single man and each might not happen without the other.  Yet without this film, it might be easy for some to forget that both of these very different stories involve the same impassioned individual, if they ever knew it at all.

IFFBoston is woven into the fabric of Boston.  If you haven’t been to the Festival, you should go for the experience.  If you have been before, you should go again to see the new threads that are added and become a part of the fabric of Boston yourself.

The 14th edition of the Independent Film Festival Boston runs from April 27 – May 4, 2016.  Details can be found at iffboston.org.

CHICAGO AND SUBURBAN STUDENTS BECOME VIPS AND FILMMAKERS

AT THIS YEARS CINEYOUTH FILM FESTIVAL

MAY 5-7th

Gives public students the opportunity to make their own movie

Chicago/Cinema, the presenting organization of the The Chicago International Film Festival’s 12th annual CineYouth Festival gives students ages 22 and under from the Chicagoland area a chance to shine on May 5-7th, 2016 at Columbia College (1104 S. Wabash 8th Floor). The Opening Night film is GKIDs' "Nocturna."

Just like the directors who attend the Chicago International Film Festival every fall, students this spring receive a similar VIP treatment at CineYouth. Not only do they see “Chicago premieres” of over 75 films, they get to walk and take pictures on the red carpet and participate in the awards competition. The winners will have their film on the ‘bigger’ screen at this year’s 52nd Chicago International Film Festival, October 13-27th

“We are so excited to present this amazing lineup of films,” says CineYouth Festival Director and Chicago International Film Festival Education Director Rebecca Fons. “Welcoming titles from as far away as Russia and the Netherlands to so many terrific locally made films that we are presenting two full programs of Chicagoland titles, audiences will be truly amazed at the talent and creativity of these young filmmakers.”

Any Chicagoland parent whose child’s film is not in the Festival still has a chance to be part of the ‘action.’ On Saturday, May 7th, students age 7 to 22 years old can participate in the CineYouthFilm Challenge, where participants will work in small groups to create, film and edit short films in one day.  Finished Challenge films will screen that evening at the CineYouth awards ceremony. All professional filming equipment is supplied by Columbia College – no experience required and it’s all free. Sign up here http://www.chicagofilmfestival.com/cineyouth/film-challenge/

Any other family can attend the Festival and walk the red carpet and take pictures too! The Festival is free and open to the public of all ages from Thursday the 5th to Saturday the 7th. More information on the films and events can be found here http://www.chicagofilmfestival.com/cineyouth/schedule-and-films/

Bloomberg Philanthropies supports environmental, educational, arts and cultural, and health-related causes where the greatest good can be achieved. ``Bloomberg and CineYouth are natural partners,'' states Flynn McRoberts, Chicago Bureau Chief of Bloomberg News. ``We're both rooted in the community and at the same time have a global vision and a deep commitment to elevating our collective culture.''

CineYouth is the only festival in Chicago that is designed to showcase films created by young filmmakers from around the world and outside of a traditional school program.  With the 79 short films accepted this year, CineYouth presents hour-long programs of official selections. This year’s Festival will screen 11 one-hour programs, including Kid Tested, Parent Approved (Saturday, May 7 at 11AM), presenting fun films appropriate for the whole family; Freaky Friday (Friday, May 6 at 7PM), and hour of scary thrillers; Reel Women (Saturday, May 7 at 12PM), a program of films made by female filmmakers and two programs of locally made films:  Locally Sourced (Friday, May 6 at 6PM) and Check Your Local Listings (Saturday, May 7 at 5PM).

Columbia College Chicago, a leader in arts and media education, and home to one of the world’s most innovative film schools, is pleased to continue its support for Cinema/Chicago’s CineYouth in 2016.:  "Our two organizations share a deep commitment to the empowerment of young people through the screen arts, and are longstanding partners in promoting the Midwest as a center for media creativity and entrepreneurship,” states Bruce Sheridan, Professor and Chair, Cinema Art+Science.

Denver Film Society and Denver Arts & Venues announced the lineup for the 2016 edition of Film on the Rocks (FOTR). Presented by Pepsi, the 17th season includes eight events throughout the summer. Each film is preceded by a live concert and local comedian, courtesy of Comedy Works.

The 17th season of Film on the Rocks will kick off on Monday, May 23 with a GREASE sing-a-long. One week later, on Memorial Day (May 30), the season will continue with fan favorite, THE BIG LEBOWSKI. The third show of the season will take place on the actual 75th anniversary of the dedication of Red Rocks Amphitheatre in 1941 (June 15). The Denver Film Society and Denver Arts & Venues are thrilled to recreate the entire original experience to mark the occasion with an official rededication ceremony and a screening of the 1941 classic,

CITIZEN KANE.

"Film on the Rocks is one of Colorado's great summer traditions," says Britta Erickson, Festival Director at the Denver Film Society. "We are thrilled to be a part of the 75th anniversary of the dedication of Red Rocks Amphitheatre in our 17th year of the program in one of the world's most beautiful outdoor venues."

This year marks the 30th anniversary of another Film on the Rocks fan favorite, FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF (June 20). THE SANDLOT will screen on July 11, for the first time in the history of the series. In honor of the late David Bowie, LABYRINTH will screen on July 25 with a tribute concert from School of Rock. Celebrating its record breaking box office run, and possibly the most foul-mouthed superhero of all time, DEADPOOL will screen August 23.

Taking a brief pause before the season closer, the Denver Film Society's young professionals group, the Reel Social Club (RSC) will host its annual fundraiser, Summer Scream at Lakeside Amusement Park, on September 1.  The RSC takes over the historic amusement park every year to bid farewell to Summer. Unlimited rides and beverages, and of course, unlimited fun, are all included in the ticket price. The September 6 Film on the Rocks season closer has yet to be announced, however, it promises to be a force to be reckoned with.

"Peak Experience" ticket packages return this year for the ultimate Film on the Rocks experience.  For each show guests can choose the VIP experience by selecting the Party Bus or Trading Post Pre-Party. The Party Bus VIP experience starts at Blake Street Tavern, includes food, drinks provided by New Belgium Brewing and a ride with Bus to Show to and from the venue. The Trading Post Pre-Party VIP option includes catering by Steuben's Food Truck, drinks provided by Miller Coors and activities by Play Mile High. Both VIP ticket options include preferred seating in the amphitheatre.

Film on the Rocks is curated and produced by the Denver Film Society on behalf of the City and County of Denver's Division of Arts & Venues. The program was created in 2000 with a vision to provide an affordable opportunity for the community to enjoy film and live entertainment at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. The first film screened in the program was Francis Ford Coppola's THE GODFATHER.

Organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) and for the 12th year under the sponsorship of AKBANK, the 35th Istanbul Film Festival ended on Monday, 18 April with the additional screenings.

187 feature, 10 short, and 24 experimental films by 223 directors from 62 countries were shown in 501 screenings across 10 movie theatres over a period of 11 days at the festival, which was attended by over 90.000 cinephiles. The festival offered a full menu to everyone’s satisfaction with 6 festival talks, a master class, 1 workshop, 2 panel discussions, and 2 concerts.

Festival Supporters

The 35th Istanbul Film Festival was realised thanks to the generous support of the Festival Sponsor Akbank, along with the Theme Sponsors Anadolu Efes, Sabah daily, atv, NTV, TLC, and Nescafé Gold. Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism gave great support to the festival, while the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Beyoğlu Municipality, Kadıköy Municipality and Maltepe Municipality, continued their publicity support. In 2016, the guests of the Istanbul Film Festival were transferred by Renault. The festival was realised also thanks to the supports of Limits Off and organisational support of bluechip Creative Events for the Award Ceremony. For all festivals by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, the Leading Sponsor is the Eczacıbaşı Group, Official Communications Sponsor Vodafone Turkey, Official Carrier DHL Worldwide Express, Official Accommodation Sponsor The Marmara Collection, Insurance Sponsor Zurich Sigorta, Health Sponsor Memorial Health Group, and the service sponsors are Navitas, GFK, directComn, and AGC.

The Istanbul Film Festival reintroduced another masterpiece of the Turkish cinema to the modern viewers in the section Special Screening: Turkish Classics Revisited, run under the special screening sponsorship of Groupama for nine years now. The film Sürü (The Herd, 1978), written by Yılmaz Güney and directed by Zeki Ökten, starring Tarık Akan, Melike Demirağ, and Tuncel Kurtiz, was restored by Atlas Post Production and 38 years after its production it returned to the silver screen, coinciding with the 80th birthday of Tuncel Kurtiz.

Festival’s Cinema Honorary Awards and Special Prize

At the festival’s award ceremony, Yeşilçam’s “most beloved jezebel” character, Suzan Avcı, producer of numerous major features, including Vurun Kahpeye and Vesikalı Yarim, Şeref Gür, character actress Perran Kutman who has made generations of audiences laugh throughout her career spanning 50 years, and actress/voice actress Jeyan Ayral Tözüm who has voiced great Yeşilçam stars such as Türkan Şoray, Filiz Akın, and Fatma Girik during her career of more than 60 years, were presented the Istanbul Film Festival Cinema Honorary Awards. The Cinema Honorary Award bestowed upon Ülkü Erakalın, who passed away just before the start of the festival and who was one of Yeşilçam’s most prolific directors with over 200 films to his credit, was presented to his son Murat Erakalın. The awards were presented by Hülya Koçyiğit, Fatoş Güney, Murathan Mungan, Türkan Şoray, and Türker İnanoğlu.

Also, a special award was conferred on Türker İnanoğlu in the 60th year of his career for his contribution to the Turkish cinema with nearly 80 films to his credit as a director, and numerous TV and cinema films as producer.
A most distinguished figure of the Turkish cinema, Türker İnanoğlu had also received the festival’s Cinema Honorary Award back in 1999.

Special Sections in the Festival

The 35th Istanbul Film Festival maintained its classic sections such as the Akbank Galas, Challenging the Years, From the World of Festivals, Young Masters, Documentary Time with NTV, Mined Zone, Antidepressant, Kids’ Menu, and Midnight Madness in its 35th edition, with the addition of sections special to this year.

The Istanbul Film Festival paid tribute to one of the most authentic, most independent, and most creative directors of all times, Otto Preminger, on the 30th anniversary of his death, with a retrospective section comprising 10 of his outstanding films. The master graphic designer Yurdaer Altıntaş, who had prepared posters for many of the Istanbul Film Festival’s sections and events in earlier editions, designed a special poster for the Otto Preminger: Anatomy of a Director section, too.

Another one of the festival’s special sections was Hidden Gems, curated by Alkan Avcıoğlu. In this section, 4 films that are little-known in cinema history, that were banned, lost, left unscreened for years, or which did not receive the acknowledgement they deserve were finally unearthed and presented to the cinephiles on the silver screen.

With a view to opening a well-deserved space for experimental cinema, the Istanbul Film Festival went back to the beginnings of this special genre and gathered the works of pioneering figures of American avant-garde film. The section In Pursuit of Light: American Avantgarde Cinema of the 70s featured these films screened in their original 16mm format at the Istanbul Modern Cinema.

The Musicians section offered 8 films that tell the stories of people who have made music an inseparable part of their lives.

Festival Spread out across Istanbul This Year

The Istanbul Film Festival screenings spread out on both sides of the city this year. On 16 and 17 April, which was the final weekend of the festival, a special selection of films are screened at the Hoca Ahmet Yesevi Cultural Centre in Sultangazi and the Türkan Saylan Cultural Centre in Maltepe. Festival’s National Golden Tulip Competition Winner Dust Cloth is screened in both venues.

A supporter of independent movie theatres since its inception, the 35th Istanbul Film Festival was hosted at Atlas, Beyoğlu, Fitaş movie theatres, Akbank Sanat, Istituto Italiano di Cultura, Feriye movie theatre in Ortaköy, Rexx movie theatre in Kadıköy, and the Istanbul Modern Cinema in Tophane.

Festival Guests

The Istanbul Film Festival hosted many guests from abroad this year as ever. In the 11 days from the opening to the closing of the festival, actors Tom Vermeir, Stacy Martin, Lior Ashkenazy, Ghalia Benali, Niki Karimi, Oscar-winning producer Ewa Puszczynska, directors Pablo Agüero, Rodrigo Plá, Philippe Lesage, Mai Masri, Tomasz Wasilewski, Anca Damian, Ciro Guerra, Carlos Hagerman, Lucile Hadzihalilovic were some of the celebrated figures who visited Istanbul.

Out of the 501 screenings in the festival, 100 were held with the participation of the films’ directors, actors, screenwriters and/or producers, who introduced their films before the screening and answered the questions from the audience afterwards.

Among the nearly 250 guests who came from abroad to attend the Istanbul Film Festival were also representatives of international film festivals, including the Sundance, Thessaloniki, Batumi, Goteborg, Sarajevo, Belgrad, Torino, Locarno, La Rochelle, Rotterdam, Amsterdam World, Tallinn, Odessa, Karlovy Vary, Les Arcs and Nuremberg film festivals.

Interviews

Interviews were conducted this year too with directors whose films were in the International Golden Tulip Competition, National Competition, and the National Documentary Competition. Film critic Erman Ata Uncu interviewed the directors in the International Golden Tulip Competition, while the directors in the National Golden Tulip and National Documentary Competitions were interviewed on video in cooperation with the students of the Okan University Fine Arts Faculty Department of Cinema & TV.

Festival Events

The 35th İstanbul Film Festival had an intense schedule not only of film screenings, but also with talks, panel discussions, and master classes. The institutions and organizations that supported the 35th Istanbul Film Festival with high contribution were given gratitude plaques at a banquet at The Marmara Raika Restaurant on the evening of 11 April, Monday. The festival’s traditional Bosphorus cruise with all guests was made this year as well.

Chris Fujiwara, author of The World and Its Double: The Life and Work of Otto Preminger, and film critic Nil Kural talked about Preminger’s works and cinematic approach at the Boğaziçi University Mithat Alam Film Centre.

In the talk where Burak Çevik, who curated the section In Pursuit of Light, and curator/art historian Herb Shellenberger discussed the American Avant-Garde cinema of the 70s, it was emphasized that the characteristic of the artists and the American film/video culture of the 70’s that distinguished it from other periods was the form and ideas that were used. Film critic and scriptwriter Burak Göral held a workshop, entitled Guide to Selecting Films for Children, in which he explained the issues of concern when selecting films for children to watch and recommended films according to age groups. International Golden Tulip jury member, video artist Ali Kazma and independent curator Mari Spirito came together at the Pera Museum, where they examined the interaction between video art and the world, based on Ali Kazma’s works.

One of the events in the festival was the panel discussion held at the Beyoğlu Movie Theatre after the screening of the documentary Only Blockbusters Left Alive, which sheds light on the monopoly of the film distribution sector in Turkey and its consequences. The panel was moderated by Cem Erciyes, with the director of the film Kaan Müjdeci, film critics Evrim Kaya and Şenay Aydemir, director Onur Ünlü, producers Serkan Çakarer and Yamaç Okur, German distributor Torsten Frehse, producer Funda Alp, and economist MustafaSönmez as panellists. With film critic and academician Melis Behlil as moderator, Fire at Sea director Gianfranco Rosi and Lampedusa in Winterdirector Jakob Brossmann held a discussion entitled, How are Moments of Historical Transition Reverberated on Film? Both filmmakers expressed their wish for films to generate new questions instead of answering them, but said that their actual aim in making documentary films was to stop what is happening.

A recipient of the 35th Istanbul Film Festival’s Cinema Honorary Award, Suzan Avcı came together with author/poet Murathan Mungan for a pleasant festival talk. Making a mark on the Turkish cinema history with the roles she acted in the heydays of Yeşilçam, Suzan Avcı talked of her career from its very beginning on.

Documentarians Necati SönmezReyan Tuvi, and Can Candan came together to discuss the state of documentary filmmaking in Turkey. Moderated by SİYAD (Film Critics’ Association of Turkey) Chairman Tül Akbal, the panel tackled a range of issues encountered by documentary film, including difficulties with funding, film production, exhibition, and distribution.

Pushing the boundaries of Tuareg music, a guest of the festival with the film Rain the Color of Blue With A Little Red In It, musician M’dou Moctar gave festivalgoers an unforgettable concert at Salon IKSV.

The screening of Leyla Bouzid’s debut feature film As I Open My Eyes was held as part of the festival’s “Musicians” section and attended by the film’s actress Tunisian musician Ghalia Benali. Benali gave a memorable concert at Salon IKSV with a huge Tunisian following among the audience.

Films, International Thessalonica Film Festival, Jerusalem Film Festival, Sarajevo Film Festival, Detailfilm, Goteborg Film Festival, Fidmarseille, OneTwoFilms, House of Netherhorror, Pantaflix,Bulgarian National Film Centre, CE Media Bulgaria Desk, Sundance Film Festival, Fantasia Film Festival, Film Independent, Global Media Makers, Lava Films, Gamechanger Films, Picture Tree International, Film Center Serbia, BadCrowd, ConceptStudio, Dokufest, Mer Film, Interfilm Production Studio, International Venice Film Festival, Ramonda Inc., Swedish Film Institute, Rialto World Cinema Amsterdam, Revolver Amsterdam, Connecting Cottbus, Artviva, Memento Films International, 10:15 Productions, The Story Bay, Level K, Twenty Twenty Visions, Holland Film Meeting, Versatile, The Match Factory, and Batum International Art Films Festival.

For the first time in its 11th edition, with the support of Anadolu Efes, the Meetings on the Bridge also hosted a training programme by international trainers and filmmakers that comprised lectures and group works on the subjects of script, production, marketing, and distribution.

10 projects were chosen for the Film Development Workshop this year, and 5 films for the Work in Progress Workshop. The Neighbours platform, launched last year, invited again projects and film professionals from the neighbouring countries with a view to preparing the ground for individuals and institutions to cooperate.

A total of 10 events, comprising 1 workshop, 2 panels, and 7 cinema lectures, were held within the scope of the Meetings on the Bridge. The programme provided interactive information on a wide range of topics, including Festivals and Distribution, Genre Approach, Women Make Films, Creative Producing, Virtual Reality, and Script Advising.

The Istanbul Film Festival will return again next year in April.

Announcing the 2016 Translations: Seattle Transgender Film Festival

Translations: Seattle Transgender Film Festival

May 12-15 2016

The 2016 edition of Translations: Seattle Transgender Film Festival (May 12-15) is all about connecting audiences with stars and stories. Now in its 11th year, the 2016 festival will celebrate the champions who have led the way for transgender communities and highlight connections through an array of voices and perspectives.

Translations will take place in venues around Seattle’s Capitol Hill, including the Northwest Film Forum, SIFF Cinema Egyptian, and 12th Avenue Arts, with a kick-off screening downtown at the Seattle Central Library on May 8.

The festival opens with the Northwest Premiere of MAJOR! about Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, the legendary 73-year-old Black transgender woman who has fought for the rights of trans women of color for over 40 years. From the 1969 Stonewall Rebellion to the Transgender Gender Variant Intersex Justice Project (TGIJP), Miss Major’s life is a testament to the fierce survivalism, resilience, and celebration of a community that has been historically traumatized and marginalized. The film, which recently sold out its San Francisco premiere at the historic Castro Theatre, shows one woman’s journey, a community’s history, and how caring for each other can be a revolutionary act.

Miss Major will be present for the screening along with director and producer Annalise Ophelian and co-producer and editor StormMiguel Florez. All are available for press prior to the event.

And when it comes to unique stories, closing night’s SUITED fits to a tee. This documentary--fresh from its Sundance premiere and produced by Lena Dunham--tells the story of Bindle & Keep, a Brooklyn tailoring company that makes custom suits for gender-nonconforming and transgender clients. Among the people on the gender spectrum sharing their stories are a trans boy preparing for his Bar Mitzvah, a New York City cab driver, a young Southern law student and a trans man preparing for his wedding. At its heart, the film is an intimate journey of coming into a new identity, accepting difference and living bravely in one's own skin. This will be SUITED’s Northwest Premiere, and subject Rae Tutera is scheduled to attend. Rae is available for interviews.

One of the most visible and highly acclaimed transgender-centered series is Amazon’s groundbreaking TRANSPARENT. This year Translations will feature an exciting discussion with some of the remarkable talent behind the making of this captivating show, including pioneering star Alexandra Billings--the first openly trans woman to have played a transgender character on television back in 2005. Guests will share some inside scoop, thoughts on the broader implications of the show’s success, reflections on what it means being transgender both in front of and behind the camera, and where they see trans representation going in the future.

In addition to Ms. Billings, the panel will include Rhys Ernst, producer (who will also have his own program, AN AFTERNOON WITH RHYS ERNST, screening films from his successful series WE’VE BEEN AROUND and THIS IS ME), and director Silas Howard. The panel will be moderated by Sam Feder (director of Translations’ 2014 Closing Night Film, KATE BORNSTEIN IS A QUEER & PLEASANT DANGER). All guests are available for press prior to the discussion.

Silas Howard is also the director and star of the 2001 seminal film BY HOOK OR BY CROOK, which will screen in honor of its 15th anniversary.

Prior to the official opening of the festival, a special screening of DECONSTRUCTING ZOE will be held on Sunday, May 8 at 2pm at the Seattle Public Library. The event is a special partnership with Pride ASIA. DECONSTRUCTING ZOE is an exploration of gender, race and sexuality, seen through the life and times of transgender Chinese actor Zoe.

A highlight with Seattle connection is the US Premiere of A WOMB OF THEIR OWN, a documentary that shares the stories of masculine-of-center people at various stages of pregnancy and parenthood. In focused segments, individuals and some couples discuss their decision to birth a child, the unique struggle of navigating reproductive services catering to cisgender women, their shifting relationship to their shifting body, and what it means to deal with gender as a parent.

Subjects Lorenzo and Imelio Ramirez of Wenatchee will attend, along with director Cyn Lubow and cinematographer Elayne Wylie.

Translations: Seattle Transgender Film Festival is a groundbreaking film festival that provides the Pacific Northwest with a venue for films by, for, and about transgender people and the issues facing the transgender community. It’s one of only a few transgender film festivals in the world. The event strives to place emphasis on visibility and positive representations.

Tickets and passes are on sale now at translationsfilmfest.org. Press badges may be requested for the full festival and individual screenings; please contact ryan@smarthousecreative.com / 206.491.3738.

Screeners for most films are also available by request.
