30 March 2016 (Hong Kong)– The 40th Hong Kong International Film Festival is held from March 21 to April 4, screening over 240 films from 66 countries and regions around the world.

With an aim to promoting art and culture in Hong Kong, LeEco partnered with HKIFF to kick-off Hong Kong’s first Online International Festival, showing exclusively the most popular and reputed films from all over the world, highlights including the digitally restored in 4K films of Bruce LEE, Berlin International Film Festival Grand Jury Prize movie The Club (2015); The Past (2013) by the Oscar-winning director Asghar FARHADI; Men & Chicken (2015)with Mads MIKKELSEN as main cast, as well as the 4K-restored Taiwanese movie The Boys from Fengkuei (1983) directed by HOU Hsiao-Hsien.  LeEco has also selected other spectacular short films in drama, animation, documentary genre, ensuring to meet the tastes of a wide range of audience.

As one of the icons of Hong Kong film culture, LeEco believes the digitally restored in 4K Bruce LEE’s films – including The Big Boss  (1971), Fist of Fury  (1972), The Way of the Dragon (1972) and The Game of Death (1978) – will revitalize the spirit and martial-arts legends in the best possible way.

The film’s restoration works are conducted by L'IMMAGINE RITROVATA, a top-of-class film restoration laboratory in Italy.  The professional technicians used the original film roll to undergo a complicated digital 4K restoration process, which took more 1,200 man hours to complete.  With the same dedication in mind, LeEco wishes to breathe a new life to the Hong Kong film icon and sustain his inspiration and passion for local film culture.

As we gear up for the last UAE cinema screening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and roll out the digital ‘red carpet’ for a live video conference with the Godfather of comics Stan Lee, we just had to fill you in on our fantasy-packed first day!

If you didn’t get sidetracked by the dinosaurs roaming the entrance, you might have seen Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau helping fans capture the perfect selfie or met Ash Ketchum voice artist Veronica Taylor!

We hosted some fabulous workshops on topics from vocal projection to electric vampires and even a little bit of magic! Michael Ferrara was on hand to talk about comics as Journalism and how comics are such a great medium for delivering real world stories and Dubomedy led a workshop on learning the basics of improv comedy.

Other highlights from Day 1 were:

  • The Godfather of comics Stan Lee joined us live from LA via video link to answer those burning questions from a full house of fans.  He let us in on a few secrets, including that one of his favourite cameos was in the Avengers movie and his most loveable character is Spiderman’s Aunt May.  He also told us the character he would most like to meet is Tony Stark and that he believes no one else but Robert Downey Junior could have played the role.
  • Star Trek fans grabbed pictures with the original Captain’s chair from the upcoming ‘Star Trek Beyond’ feature, filmed right here in Dubai
  • The opportunity to see the exhibition from above and ZIP-LINE right across the hall!
  • Check out the new Samsung virtual reality googles and experience a fresh world of gaming
  •  The self-proclaimed ‘Queen of FIFA’ Jesse Fangs hosted a Q&A on all things you tube and FIFA
  • DMC from Run DMC ‘walked this way’ into town to launch his new comic and prep for his performance at Toy Room on Friday night!
  • One of the fantastic veteran comic book artists not to miss is Whilce Portacio!  This artistic wunderkind will be around to answer fan questions about his years of experience and work with X Factor, Uncanny X Men and Heroes Reborn: Iron Man
  •  Guests got up close and personal with an ‘almost’ real Gorilla, thanks to Gorillaguy.com.  This extremely life-like animatronic suit is good enough to frighten fans of all ages!
  • Don’t miss tonight’s MEFCC After Party at Vii Dubai in the Conrad Hotel!  All the stars will be there, so who knows who you could bump into!

Day 2 activities not to be missed include:

  • Fanta Gaming Masters saw the start of 3 days of fierce competition between amateur gamers and opportunities for them to play against industry superstars!  Come down tomorrow and Saturday and take part if you think you have the skills!
  • Meet even more stars, including Christopher Lloyd, Nick Frost, Summer Glau and Randy Orton!
  • A 1.30pm exclusive screening of Bilal by Barajoun Entertainment Animation.
  • Learn how to make your own Cosplay accessories from the world famous Alodia! (3pm)
  • CEO of Starlight Entertainment Jeff Gomez will be critiquing the big screen adaptations of Shared Universes and who is getting it right!

New poster for Annecy 2016, we love it!

Affiche 2016

The acclaimed French-Canadian illustrator Michèle Lemieux has received many international prizes for her children’s books, including the Bologna Ragazzi Award for Gewitternacht, whose adaption to the screen as Stormy Night marked her animation film debut in 2003.

After discovering the Alexeieff-Parker pinscreen technique during a workshop given by Jacques Drouin at the NFB, she began work on her second short, Here and the Great Elsewhere, which was in the Official Selection at Annecy 2012. She also visited the Festival last year to give her own initiation workshop on the pinscreen.

The Annecy Festival team decided to call on her to create this year’s poster, and from the different themes for 2016, she has chosen to focus on French animation for her design.

"France is in the spotlight at Annecy 2016, and I feel very privileged to have been asked to create the Festival poster. For this country that I love, I wanted to give a happy and timeless image, representing its perpetual movement."

Read how she wanted to bring the magic of animation to life through this poster.

The signature of the poster was created by Jessica Charbonneau from TagTeam Studio.

Moogfest celebrates the legacy of Bob Moog, a visionary engineer who pioneered the analog synthesizer and other technology tools used by artists like Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, and Kraftwerk. This year’s program will feature over 250 innovators in music, art, and technology -- from Gary Numan (3 nights), GZA (2 nights), Grimes and Laurie Anderson, to virtual reality pioneer Jaron Lanier and transhumanist visionary Dr. Martine Rothblatt. For the first time, Moogfest takes place in Durham, North Carolina, a fast-growing capital of technology, culture and entrepreneurship.

From Thursday, May 19 - Sunday, May 22, Moogfest unfolds in venues throughout downtown Durham in spaces that range from intimate galleries to grand theaters. Special care has been taken to pair nighttime performances with spaces that have unique acoustics and style. Art Installations are site-specific and scattered throughout the city.

The historic Carolina Theatre will showcase architects of sound and many avant-garde artists whose production is as radical as their compositions, including sunn O))), Explosions in the Sky, Oneohtrix Point Never, Laurie Anderson (special matinee show), Alessandro Cortini, Daniel Lanois, Tim Hecker, Arthur Russell Instrumentals, Rival Consoles, and Dawn of Midi.

Carolina Theatre: Future Thought

Transhumanist thought-leader Dr. Martine Rothblatt and virtual reality pioneer Jaron Lanier will both deliver daytime keynotes on ‘The Future of Creativity’ in the theater’s largest space, Fletcher Hall.

Other tone-setting conversations include Laurie Anderson interviewed by Jana Hunter of Lower Dens; ‘Future Cities’, a Research Triangle Park-hosted town hall style conversation exploring the tomorrowlands that are being built today; ‘Time Traveling with Hip Hop’, a conversation between GZA and Duke Professor Mark Anthony Neal; ‘The Future of our Species’ panel discussion hosted by cyborg artist and activist Neil Harbisson; and ‘Hidden Figures: Women and Afrofuturism’ co-presented by Chuck Lightning of Wondaland with guests including Janelle Monae and Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah.

The Durham Hotel: Future Sound

The Durham Hotel plays host to daily morning yoga set to Moog music on its open rooftop, and a Sunday Moogfest Disco Brunch with a four-hour long DJ set from Hieroglyphic Being.

Art Film Festival AVIFF Cannes
May 16 -19, 2016

Support on KISSKISSBANKBANK

We are developing a high quality festival that becomes independent again after trying the adventure of Rothschild villa, owned by the city of Cannes that has been available for AVIFF for free in 2015 due to a decision of the culture service of the municipality, that we thank in passing, but inappropriate for this kind of event. The place although classified and splendid is not suitable for our festival and is located too far away from La Croisette.
This edition 2016 will see the AVIFF in the center of the city and facing the sea, near the port of Cannes.

To make the festival AVIFF even more attractive we open a portion of its funding participatory platform with KissKissBankBank on this link: http://www.kisskissbankbank.com/…/aviff-cannes-art-film-fes…

We offer good visibility and the opportunity for those of you who have been following us for years to share our objectives to better promote films by artists with perseverance and passion.
See you in Cannes

FRAMES, FICCI’s Media & Entertainment conclave, attracts 20 countries

FRAMES is big. There is no M&E (Media and Entertainment) event in the country bigger than FRAMES. For many years now, the venue is the idyllic hotel in Mumbai’s lake-district, and the only thing wrong with the location is the distance that many attendees have to cover to get there. To those unfortunate visitors who live either at the southern end of the island or the outer suburbs in the north, it could be a two-hour journey, one-way. For those coming from other cities or other countries, this is a non-issue. Delegates include speakers, exhibitors, country partners and industry professionals. Among them are many NRI friends, who travel from the USA or Europe and meet me only at this event, year after year. Every year, there is at least one country partner, and in 2016, it was Turkey.

‘Change or Perish – The Year of Digital’ was the theme running through the conclave, which was fine, but there was no need to keep drumming it ad nauseam.  FICCI always invites a Union Minister for the inauguration, and this time it was Mr. Ravi Shankar Prasad, holding the Communications & Information Technology portfolios. He set the tone by remarking, “India’s talent combined with the power of Information Technology would act as a springboard to launch India into the big league.”

Mr. Prasad said that the Government of India recognised the importance and relevance of promoting the media and entertainment industry. Hence, visa processes were being eased for film shootings. Besides the National Centre of Excellence was coming up for the M&E industry and a new film facilitation office was also being set up. The Minister said that for government campaigns like Make in India, Skill India, Digital India and Smart Cities, ‘digital’ was the foundation. He added that to bridge the digital divide in the country, there was a need for empowering India, digitally.

Mr. Mukesh Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Industries Ltd., was also present at the inaugural and stressed that India was poised to become a $100 billion industry in the coming decade, but still ranked 150th, in access to internet and mobile. Mr. Uday Shankar, Chairman, FICCI Media & Entertainment Committee, & CEO, Star India, said that India cannot remain in a state of denial, as the world was changing, and it was time India adopted and embraced digitisation. “Power of stories will remain, and breaking away from the traditional media, the digital media was making way for new stories,” he added.  Dr. A. Didar Singh, Secretary General, FICCI, said that this year delegations from almost 20 countries were participating in FICCI FRAMES.

The Government of India is making a conscious effort to move towards less regulation of the media and entertainment industry, and is encouraging auto regulation by industry,” said Mr. Sunil Arora, Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, at a keynote session on ‘Making India a Global M&E Hub’. Mr. Arora said that the industry had time and again raised the issue of ‘clearances’, hence the government was easing and liberalising the process of security clearances, to allow greater flexibility for the film fraternity. Speaking about the FM radio station licence auctions, he said after the successful auction last year, a  new set of rules have been submitted to the Cabinet, for the next phase of FM radio auctions.

Underlining the challenges for making India a global M&E hub, Mr. Arora said that the theatre density (number of cinemas in relation to the population) of the country left a lot to be desired (India has 9,000-10,000 cinemas only, a poor comparison to many other nations). There was a need to increase the number of theatres in the country. On the taxation side, he said that the levies would be rationalised automatically once the GST is in place.

In an all-star session, ‘Change or Perish:  Surviving the Digital Divide’, the luminaries on stage were Mr. Aroon Purie, Chairman & Editor-in-Chief, The India Today Group; Mr. Arthur Bastings, President and Managing Director, Discovery Asia-Pacific; Mr. Sudhanshu Vats, Group CEO, Viacom18; Mr. Siddharth Roy Kapur, Managing Director, Disney India; Mr. Vikram Chandra, Executive Director & CEO, NDTV Group and Mr. Neeraj Roy, CEO, Hungama

Mr. Bastings commented that in the digital sector, the players were still looking for a way to drive the emerging medium. Business plans were still evolving. He added that the consumption measurement system of television was bad, and there was a need for a better and more reliable method. Mr. Vats reminded us that, on the digital platform, it was easier to measure and gauge the number of actual users, track the content consumption and pattern of consumer behaviour, in comparison to traditional media, like television, where the consumer behaviour was based on a small sample of consumers. Speaking on the relevance of the big screen in the era of emerging digital platforms, Mr. Kapur, whose company makes mainly film content, was of the opinion that cinema was being consumed on small screens, but big screens will continue to exist. However, the type of content will play a critical role while audience will decide to choose a medium to watch a movie.

Last year, FRAMES started Frame Your Idea (FYI) for those with a creative spark and the burning desire to achieve success in celluloid but no access to makers. Across the three days of FYI, over 2700 meetings were held between 300 writers/idea owners and over 70 producers/studios/broadcasters. Panellists included an international who’s who: Rajkumar Hirani Films, Dharma Productions (Karan Johar),  Rohit Shetty Productions, Disney Films, Drishyam Films, Salman Khan Films, Film Karavan Shemaroo Entertainment, Fox Star Studio, Tips Industries, Eros, Viacom18 Motion Pictures, John Abraham Productions, Kabir Khan Films (Kabir had a Master Class too, with Vidhu Vinod Chopra), Macguffin Pictures, Phantom Films, Vishesh Films(Mahesh Bhatt), BBC Worldwide India Phantom Films, Star Plus, ZEE TV, Cartoon Network , Shemaroo Entertainment, Nickelodeon and more.

Besides Kabir Khan (director Phantom, Bajrangi Bhaijan, Ek Tha Tiger, Kabul Express, New York), Asif Kapadia, the England-based 2016 Oscar winner for Amy (Best Documentary, also Britain’s highest grossing documentary ever) and the maker of F1 racing driver Ayrton Senna’s biopic, also had a master class. With family origins in Gujarat, 44 year-old Kapadia was born and educated in England. Speaking at 200 words per minute (beyond 180 is almost incomprehensible) , he came across a gifted, albeit proud, film- maker who admires Alfred Hitchcock, hates rules and is not crazy about technology. He also did not take too kindly to my observation that there was too much movement in his films, of people as well as vehicles. Likewise, a couple of speakers dealing with the topic of Indian sports on TV weren’t really excited about my scepticism about coverage and commentary of kabbadi, based on memories of my days at ESPN, Singapore.

Attendance at FRAMES 2016 was low overall, and quite a few of those present came only to network, not to attend any sessions. One reason for the low turnout could be the shift in dates. Over the last few years, the event has moved from the third week of March to the end of the month. Many regulars who have been blocking their calendars based on previous editions were unable to adjust their schedules to match the staggered dates. Though unaffected by this shift, personally, I had three points as feedback: fewer sessions than before are a welcome development, rather than the earlier obsession with cramping 10-12 sessions into a day; with time, budgets should increase, rather than tighten, as was felt this year; management should be more efficient and friendlier, than evidenced in 2016.

The Istanbul Chamber of Commerce and Tourism led a delegation to promote collaboration in the Cinema and Television sectors, between India and Turkey. Companies participating in the delegation were Ayyapim, Kadraj, Kanal 7, Outline Ajans, Pana Film, Tac Medya, TRT (Turkish Radio and Television Corporation) and ULKE TV. His Excellency, Mr. Burak Akçapar, the Turkish Ambassador to India, later announced, “Turkey is predicting content exports of USD 20 million to India by 2018." Feriha (original title Adini Feriha Koydum), a Turkish TV programme currently being beamed on Zee Zindagi, reportedly has a viewership of 36 million/week. The series, which had a 67-episode run in Turkey that ended in January 2016, is about a young, beautiful girl from a lower middle class family, named Feriha. Her father is a janitor in an upper-class neighbourhood of Istanbul, while her mother is a house-keeper. Feriha gets a scholarship and joins a private university. There, she feigns being a rich girl. As it happens, she meets a handsome, rich boy called Emir Sarrafoğlu. Then, ...catch it on TV.

All said and done, the lingering memories of FICCI FRAMES 2016 include the faces of the beautiful women from the Turkish delegation, and the tasty balaclava and nuts they distributed to a select sample. Feriha might have mixed responses, but everybody is nuts about balaclava.

Announcing the 2016
Translations: Seattle Transgender Film Festival

May 12-15

The 2016 edition of Translations: Seattle Transgender Film Festival (May 12-15) is all about connecting audiences with stars and stories. Now in its 11th year, the 2016 festival will celebrate the champions who have led the way for transgender communities and highlight connections through an array of voices and perspectives.

Translations will take place in venues around Seattle’s Capitol Hill, including the Northwest Film Forum, SIFF Cinema Egyptian, and 12th Avenue Arts, with a kick-off screening downtown at the Seattle Central Library on May 8.

The festival opens with the Northwest Premiere of MAJOR! about Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, the legendary 73-year-old Black transgender woman who has fought for the rights of trans women of color for over 40 years. From the 1969 Stonewall Rebellion to the Transgender Gender Variant Intersex Justice Project (TGIJP), Miss Major’s life is a testament to the fierce survivalism, resilience, and celebration of a community that has been historically traumatized and marginalized. The film, which recently sold out its San Francisco premiere at the historic Castro Theatre, shows one woman’s journey, a community’s history, and how caring for each other can be a revolutionary act.

Miss Major will be present for the screening along with director and producer Annalise Ophelian and co-producer and editor StormMiguel Florez. All are available for press prior to the event.

And when it comes to unique stories, closing night’s SUITED fits to a tee. This documentary--fresh from its Sundance premiere and produced by Lena Dunham--tells the story of Bindle & Keep, a Brooklyn tailoring company that makes custom suits for gender-nonconforming and transgender clients. Among the people on the gender spectrum sharing their stories are a trans boy preparing for his Bar Mitzvah, a New York City cab driver, a young Southern law student and a trans man preparing for his wedding. At its heart, the film is an intimate journey of coming into a new identity, accepting difference and living bravely in one's own skin. This will be SUITED’s Northwest Premiere, and subject Rae Tutera is scheduled to attend. Rae is available for interviews.

One of the most visible and highly acclaimed transgender-centered series is Amazon’s groundbreaking TRANSPARENT. This year Translations will feature an exciting discussion with some of the remarkable talent behind the making of this captivating show, including pioneering star Alexandra Billings--the first openly trans woman to have played a transgender character on television back in 2005. Guests will share some inside scoop, thoughts on the broader implications of the show’s success, reflections on what it means being transgender both in front of and behind the camera, and where they see trans representation going in the future.

In addition to Ms. Billings, the panel will include Rhys Ernst, producer (who will also have his own program, AN AFTERNOON WITH RHYS ERNST, screening films from his successful series WE’VE BEEN AROUND and THIS IS ME), and director Silas Howard. The panel will be moderated by Sam Feder (director of Translations’ 2014 Closing Night Film, KATE BORNSTEIN IS A QUEER & PLEASANT DANGER). All guests are available for press prior to the discussion.

Silas Howard is also the director and star of the 2001 seminal film BY HOOK OR BY CROOK, which will screen in honor of its 15th anniversary.

Prior to the official opening of the festival, a special screening of DECONSTRUCTING ZOE will be held on Sunday, May 8 at 2pm at the Seattle Public Library. The event is a special partnership with Pride ASIA. DECONSTRUCTING ZOE is an exploration of gender, race and sexuality, seen through the life and times of transgender Chinese actor Zoe.

A highlight with Seattle connection is the US Premiere of A WOMB OF THEIR OWN, a documentary that shares the stories of masculine-of-center people at various stages of pregnancy and parenthood. In focused segments, individuals and some couples discuss their decision to birth a child, the unique struggle of navigating reproductive services catering to cisgender women, their shifting relationship to their shifting body, and what it means to deal with gender as a parent.

Subjects Lorenzo and Imelio Ramirez of Wenatchee will attend, along with director Cyn Lubow and cinematographer Elayne Wylie.

Translations: Seattle Transgender Film Festival is a groundbreaking film festival that provides the Pacific Northwest with a venue for films by, for, and about transgender people and the issues facing the transgender community. It’s one of only a few transgender film festivals in the world. The event strives to place emphasis on visibility and positive representations.

Tickets and passes are on sale now at translationsfilmfest.org. Press badges may be requested for the full festival and individual screenings; please contact ryan@smarthousecreative.com / 206.491.3738.

Screeners for most films are also available by request.
