Cannes Red Carpet turns yellow with the Poster for the 69th edition inspired by Godard

$

The official poster for the 69th Festival de Cannes, taking place from 11 to 22 May and presided over by Australian director George Miller, was designed using stills from Jean-Luc Godard's film Contempt.

It's all there. The steps, the sea, the horizon: a man's ascent towards his dream, in a warm Mediterranean light that turns to gold. As an image it is reminiscent of a timeless quote by Michel Mourlet used at the beginning ofContempt: "Cinema replaces our gaze with a world in harmony with our desires”.

And so it is Michel Piccoli who in 2016, from the roof of the famous villa designed by the writer Curzio Malaparte, will open the red carpet for the 69th Festival de Cannes. It's a symbolic choice, since this film about the making of a film - regarded by many as one of the finest ever made in CinemaScope (the Piccoli/Bardot pairing along with Fritz Lang, Raoul Coutard's cinematography, Georges Delerue's music, and so on and so forth) - had such a considerable impact on the history of film and cinephilia.

On the eve of its 70th anniversary, by choosing to represent itself under the symbol of this simultaneously palimpsest and unambiguous film, the Festival is reiterating its founding commitment: to pay tribute to the history of film, and to welcome new ways of creating and seeing. The steps represent a kind of ascension towards the infinite horizon of a cinema screen.

This 69th Festival de Cannes poster has been designed by Hervé Chigioni and his graphic designer Gilles Frappier. The 2016 visual identity has been created by Philippe Savoir (Filifox).

Downtown Bergamo, a city with heart

One if the really good things about Bergamo, which justifies calling it a Film MEETING rather than a film festival, is the fact that many directors or historic film personalities are invited to meet the public unpretentiously in  a tent set up for this purpose just outside of the main projection auditorium.

This is carried out in a kind of press conference format with festival moderators and interpreters as needed, but is open to the public free of charge on a first come first seated basis, and usually ends with an open Q and A session, time permitting.

The guests who attended this year in this context were famous Nouvelle Vague actress Anna Karina, Zsuzsa Csákány, widow of legendary Hungarian director Miklos Jancsó, also editor of most of his films -- foremost Bosnian director Jasmila Žbanić, leading Czech Director Petr Zelenka, and maverick English outsider, ShaneMeadows, the voice of the British north country underbelly.

Every meeting was fascinating, informative and exciting while, unlike major film festivals which tend to hold off the public, here Bergamo provides easy personal contact with the artists in question. These meetings alone are sufficient reason for a trip to Bergamo and enrich the film experience of ordinary film buffs and film professionals in equal measure.

My IPad takes on some of these meetings.

image1.jpeg

Shane Meadows with son and fantastic Italian interpreter. She didn't miss a beat! The film under discussion was  his skinhead masterpiece, "This is England", 2006.

image2.jpeg

The widow of Hungarian director Miklos Jancso filled the audience in on much intimate personal background as well as details of Jancsó's working style and views on filmmaking.

Sarajevo based director Jasmila Žbanić had six exceptional films on view, talked of Kusturica's Bosnian apostasy, and put Bosnia firmly on my own personal film map for good.

image2.jpeg

Hanne Karin Blarke Bayer, better known as Anna Karina seated before an image of herself from her golden Godard period in the sixties is now seventy six and still sparkling with life.

Her conference was undoubtedly the major event of the week and a representative selection of her films were shown at invariably packed house...

Karina with current American husband Dennis Berry, ex-pat actor, director, and screenwriter. He is the son of Blacklisted Hollywood director John Berry and grew up in Paris. He was previously married to another Paris American ex-pat, Jean Seberg. I'm jealous!

25films so far ... Not counting. Shorts!

Bergamo, Wed. day 5: Five films. Three Jancsos. one dismal Anna Karina, and one magnificent doc on Soviet Ballerina Maya Plisetskaya.
9:30 Jancsó,  Magyar Rapszódia. Part I of Trilogy.   1978, RT. 103'
Parabola Liturgica surrealista, rievoca eventi della secondo decennio del XX secolo.Transformo spirituale di istvan Zsadani. Inspirata alla figura storico di Endre Baczy-Zsilinszky.
Magyar Rapszódia. Part I of Trilogy.
Cserhalmi György, (Istvan Zsadani)
Balázsovts Lajos (Zsadani Gabor)
Madaras József (Baksa András) -- very important character in all of Jancso's films.

Udo Kier (Poór), Butor Istvan, Takács Anna,
Ended at 11:08.
First name in end credits was Cserhalmi György. This was a Cserhalmi film all the way.
His Daughter was the blonde girl at the end.
Long first fight between Cserhalmi and little guy Madaras Jözsef near the end. No clear victor. Heavy duty.
Ends under the same outdoor wooden canopy where it began.
With 13 people seated at long table recalling the Last Supper of Christ.
Very Windy last section.
Badacsany Dance Chorus staged the mass group dances.
Began with bugle calls then mass dancing and celebration under the outdoor canopy. Whole first section is march musical then seques to Blue Danube Waltz.
Opens actually with many horses and a parade heading screen outward. . Drunken party where Cserhalmi is disgusted by father's drunkenness and leads him off after complaining to mother.
Then seques into a not very coherent series of set pieces, or skits. . Frontally nude women appear in the  big outdoor celebration.. The entire film is, in fact shot outdoors. In one scene we also see nude soldiers in the background, lots of group dancing and March music. The familiar Rakoczy march is always heard in these films.
The Film is mostly composed of large crowd scenes alternating with skits involving Cserhalmi and one or two other people.
Another Set is the white wooden house with rectangular wooden columns. This is used as the setting for secret entrances whereupon those who enter are violently  thrown out. In one early scene Cserhsalmi, a military commander demands of a soldier to shoot  him with a pistol. It doesn't matter whether the pistol was loaded or not -- the point is that orders must be followed even if you are ordered to shoot your superior officer!

Followed by, Oldás és Kötés, 1963. (Untying and tying up)
(AKA, Cantata)

Pic is about successful a surgeon age 32 whose life is empty and he cannot return the love of women who desire him.

Latinovits, (as surgeon, Jambor Ambrus)
Opens on hospital grounds. b/w
Go to heart operation graphically filmed with the surgeons fingers groping around in the open thorax.  Seventy  year old surgeon of the old school is a doubtful choice for this operation  -- heart stops. Latinovits intercedes and brings patient around. Go to jazz club and screening for intellectuals. Hot jazz. Latinovits can't relate to femme who wants him ~ drives out to father's village. We plant at night he is tokd by a farmer. He is very much at home there. Father turns fien iffer  leave with him. Back to city in his fancy car. Picks up young hitchhiker in the rain. . Bartok on radio with Cantata music.
Very young Latinovits. Straightforward story is Janco's most accessible film.
----------------
Third Jancso of the day was "Rhapsody 2" -- earlier seen at cinemateque in Paris, in Decembrr 2014 where I met jancso fanatic Paolo Lipari.
Another Horse Opera starring Cserhalmi. Opens and closes with a little red car. Lots of fogged out scenes. Many scenes at sunset against a red sun by a big lake.
Arbitrary explosions in lake, then all over the place. Same characters as Rapdody One with another heavy duty fight scene between Cserhalmi and Little muscular Madaras József. No Winner.
Cserhalmi's daughter is arrested as a communist but he demands her to be set free.
She shows up again later. Cserhalmi with head on breast of nude woman near the end.  It's a Cserhalmi film all the way, but Big Butor is also in there . Many horse and four levels of happenings on a single screen is Jancso at his most Jancsoistic.  Old father from previous Rapsody film. Lots of lecturing. Arbitrary shootings -- horses, horses, and more horses.
Layered action going on simultaneously is a Jancso trademark

In between I slept through the dumb film directed by Karina.

Nous Sommes Tous Ensemble. Her single attempt atbdirection is a fiasco from beginning to end. In her interview she saudbshe made this film "just to see it I could do it". Nice try -- No cigar.

Best thing about it was the colorful generique. Embarassingly bad.
Day ended with Magnigicent documentary on Svetlana Plisetsksya. What amazing body control -- and movement itself as an art form. She talks of the importance of the arms in the dance -- many clips from her stage performance are shown. Some are simply amazing. One was  Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliette which I saw once in Paris at the Garnier opera house -- ticket from Fraitag's fiancée.

Russian narration, with Italian subtitles -- Absolutely amazing all the way. A great way to end the day. And the funny thing is that I once met Plisetskaya at a reception in the Hollywood Hills when  the Bolshoi came to town and I was working as a voluntary student Russian interpreter -- the year was 1961.

   Love and Friendship

Whit Stillman's Love & Friendship, James Schamus' Indignation and Jesse Moss' The Bandit to Be Celebrated at Festival's Key Events

San Francisco, CA -- The San Francisco Film Society has announced the highly anticipated Big Nights selections for the 59th San Francisco International Film Festival (April 21 - May 5), including its Opening Night, Centerpiece and Closing Night programs. The two-week event kicks off with Whit Stillman's hilarious and wry Love & Friendship (Ireland 2016), an adaptation of a Jane Austen novella starring Kate Beckinsale and Chloe Sevigny. Slated as the Festival's high-profile Centerpiece event is Indignation (USA 2015), James Schamus' directorial debut based on novelist Philip Roth's fictionalized account of his college experiences in the 1950s. Finally, the Festival will come to a close with local director Jesse Moss' documentary The Bandit (USA 2016), a jubilant look at Burt Reynolds, stuntman-turned-director Hal Needham and their high-speed pursuit classic Smokey and the Bandit. Special guests are expected to attend and participate in post-screening Q&As at each event. The Opening and Closing Night screenings will be followed by the Festival's signature celebratory parties.

"We are proud to present this well-rounded group of films and filmmakers as our Big Nights in 2016," said San Francisco Film Society Executive Director Noah Cowan. "From venerable indie director Whit Stillman delivering a refreshingly contemporary Jane Austen adaptation, to James Schamus -- one of the world's greatest writer/producers -- directing his first film, to Bay Area star documentary maker Jesse Moss bringing his raucous Hollywood portrait home, we look forward to welcoming these exceptionally talented folks to San Francisco to help us celebrate our 59th edition."

Featuring renowned artists, acclaimed films and some of San Francisco's landmark historical theatres, SFIFF's Big Nights are annual high points on the Bay Area cultural calendar. The Opening Night, Centerpiece and Closing Night festivities frame two weeks of cinematic celebration and give the film community a chance to gather for the love of world-class cinema and to drink, dance and discuss great films.

Opening Night: Love & Friendship

Thursday April 21, 7:00 pm, Castro Theatre

Director Whit Stillman and star Kate Beckinsale expected to attend.

Writer-director Whit Stillman brings a very funny sense and sensibility to this period comedy as sassy social climber Lady Susan (Kate Beckinsale) tries to finagle out of a scandal and gain matrimonial advantage for herself and her daughter. Witty and spry from start to finish, Stillman's adaptation of a Jane Austin novella set in the 1790s charms as it peers into the affairs of the privileged and those who aspire to be, winking at contemporary pretensions through the lens of the past.

The Opening Night celebration continues at 9:00 pm at Public Works (161 Erie Street). Attendees will kick off the SFIFF59 and celebrate the Festival's new Mission home as the 2016 program opens. Live entertainment, dancing, food and drink. Must be 21+ to attend. SFIFF Opening Night is sponsored by True Ventures.

Indignation

Centerpiece: Indignation

Saturday April 30, 8:00 pm, Victoria Theatre

Director James Schamus expected to attend.

James Schamus (Kanbar Award recipient, SFIFF 2010) makes his directorial debut with an elegant adaptation of Philip Roth's novel, a fictionalized account of the author's own college experiences in the '50s. Logan Lerman gives a terrific performance as Marcus Messner, one of a handful of Jewish students on the Midwestern university campus, whose efforts to assert and define himself are tested in interactions with the college dean, a beautiful blonde and his protective mother.

The Bandit

Closing Night: The Bandit

Thursday May 5, 7:00 pm, Castro Theatre
Director Jesse Moss expected to attend.

An exuberant, surprisingly moving romp through 1970s pop culture, The Banditcelebrates the friendship between superstar actor Burt Reynolds and stuntman-turned-director Hal Needham, as together they create the Southern-fried classic Smokey and the Bandit. Bay Area director Jesse Moss (The Overnighters,SFIFF 2014) brings great warmth and impossibly retro-cool archival footage to this exceptional dual biography.

Attendees will close out the Festival with the Closing Night Party at Mezzanine (444 Jessie Street) at 9:00 pm. Festival goers will gather for one last blowout at Mezzanine and dance, drink, snack and revel in an incredible two weeks of cinematic adventures. Must be 21+ to attend.

16th Nippon Connection Film Festival – First Program Highlights
Focus On: Animated Films / over 100 movies from Japan / rich and varied festival program

Over the course of six days, from 24 to 29 May 2016, the 16th Nippon Connection Film Festival will again bring selections from Japanese cinema and culture to Frankfurt am Main. Last year, the world's largest festival for Japanese cinema attracted around 16,000 visitors to the festival centers at Künstlerhaus Mousonturm and Theater Willy Praml in der Naxoshalle. The event presents a glamorous panorama of Japanese movies, currently consisting of over 100 short and feature-length films. Numerous directors will arrive from Japan to present their works for the first time outside of Japan, to discuss and to celebrate. Beyond film screenings, the festival offers a varied program of workshops, concerts and exhibitions, where visitors can experience the diverse culture of Japan.

Focus on Animated Films

A big focus of this year's festival will be new animated movies from Japan. One of the works you can see as part of the Nippon Animation program is Miss Hokusai by Keiichi Hara. The award-winning film tells the story of young Oei who studies under her father, the famous wood-carving artist Hokusai. Two animes based on novels by science fiction author Project Itoh will premiere in Germany. In the steampunk adventure Empire of Corpses by Ryotaro Makihara, a student travels the world by order of the British Queen, searching for the legacy of Victor Frankenstein. Harmony, by Michael Arias and Takashi Nakamura, is a captivating science fiction drama about a utopia which turns out to be a totalitarian regime. Director Michael Arias will be a guest at the festival. Films offering entertainment for the whole family include The Case of Hana and Alice; the innocent and dreamy story of two students who want to solve a mysterious murder case. Using finely drawn pictures, Shunji Iwai tells the story of the magic of a blossoming friendship. As part of the city partnership between Frankfurt and Yokohama, new animated movies by students at the Tokyo University of the Arts will once again be shown. The university’s faculty of animation is located in Yokohama.

About 100 New Productions from Japan

Beyond Nippon Animation, there are also exciting live-action movies presenting new stories from Japan that await the audience. The sections Nippon Cinema and Nippon Visions feature an explosion of various styles and mainstream cinema. This includes two new pieces by the enfant terrible of Japanese cinema, Sion Sono. His tranquil, bittersweet space parable Whispering Star reflects on the meaning of being human, using impressively beautiful black-and-white images. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Love & Peace, a crazy comedy about a misfit who becomes a mega rock star thanks to his giant tortoise. Master director Takeshi Kitano will also be represented in the film line-up. In the entertaining comedy Ryuzo and the Seven Henchmen, former mafia boss Ryuzo returns to his old job because his peaceful retirement is simply too boring. The unsuccessful and sex-obsessed director Tetsuo takes center stage in Lowlife Love by Eiji Uchida. This ironic film settles a score with the complacency of the film world and at the same time is a passionate declaration of love to the art of filmmaking. Leading actor and rising star Kiyohiko Shibukawa will personally present the movie in Frankfurt. Ryosuke Hashiguchi strikes a more serious note in Three Stories of Love, where he tells three unvarnished, interwoven stories of life and love, desperation and reconciliation.

After its huge success last year, the 16th Nippon Connection Film Festival will again have a live soundtrack-performance. Internationally acclaimed experimental film artist Takashi Makino will create new soundscapes to his hypnotic movies live alongside English trombonist Hilary Jeffrey.

More Than Cinema: Nippon Culture

In addition to the many films being presented, visitors can experience Japanese culture in workshops, presentations and exhibitions with the program Nippon Culture. The variety of topics ranges from origami and naginata martial arts to kimonos and shiatsu massage. Visitors can learn about Japanese handicraft in the textile coloring workshop that focuses on the traditional shibori technique. A cooking class, booths with food and sake and the popular culinary city tour through Frankfurt provide authentic Japanese delicacies. One highlight is the VHS-Night with Tom Mes. The Dutch film critic will present iconic video cassette favorites alongside several filmmakers. The Nippon Kids program also brings Japan to the little ones, with face painting for children, a samurai shiatsu massage and a kamishibai theater show.

The Festival

The Japanese Film Festival Nippon Connection is organized and run on a voluntary basis by a team of 70 members of the non-profit Nippon Connection Association. Its patrons are Peter Feldmann, Mayor of the City of Frankfurt am Main, and Takeshi Kamiyama, Consul General of Japan in Frankfurt am Main. Künstlerhaus Mousonturm and Theater Willy Praml in der Naxoshalle are the festival centers. Moogfest 2016 today unveiled an ambitious daytime lineup of events

Moogfest 2016 today unveiled an ambitious daytime lineup of events that features many musical artists, including Laurie Anderson, GZA, and Daniel Lanois, leading master classes, workshops, and conversations that explore the technologies, innovations, and ideas that make the festival’s cutting-edge evening performances possible.

To celebrate the legacy of Bob Moog, an engineer who worked in partnership with artists to invent new creative tools, Moogfest reimagines the tech conference and music festival by taking the best of both formats to create a completely new type of experience. Hailed as “a sci-fi dance party with a Ph.D. in STEM” by The New York Times, Moogfest 2016 will gather more than 250 technologists, musicians, and artists -- from Grimes and Gary Numan to Jaron Lanier and Dr. Martine Rothblatt -- to explore new technologies that are pushing the boundaries of creative expression. For the first time, Moogfest will take place in Durham, North Carolina, named one the hottest cities for tech in 2016 by Business Insider, and just a few hours from the employee-owned Moog Music factory in Asheville.

Reflecting its role as an incubator for experimentation across technology, art, and music, Moogfest enlisted The Haxan Cloak and Smashing Boxes, a Durham-based digital design firm, to collaborate on turning the Moogfest website into instrument. Dubbed “_substrate”, it allows fans to manipulate individual audio tracks by swiping, tapping, and clicking the screen, resulting in a totally unique audio and 3D visual experience for each user. The experience launches with a remix by The Haxan Cloak (Moses Sumney’s cover of Laurie Anderson’s “O Superman”), and will expand in the coming months to feature other Moogfest artists.

Watch the tutorial on how to use _substrate HERE.

Tickets for Moogfest 2016 are available for $249 (Festival Pass) and $499 (VIP Pass) at www.moogfest.com. Exact times, dates, and locations of all daytime events will be announced on March 31st.

The Moogfest Day-to-Night Journey

·         GZA will discuss Time Traveling with Hip Hop in a conversation moderated by Duke University Professor of Black Popular Culture, Mark Anthony Neal.

·         Master Classes will be led by legendary producer and musician Daniel Lanois (U2, Peter Gabriel), ambient house pioneers The Orb, and composer and producer Ben Frost with drone trailblazer Tim Hecker. ·         Reggie Watts, Tyondai Braxton, Mykki Blanco will discuss Afrofuturism, which combines elements of science fiction, astral jazz, historical fiction, psychedelic hip hop, fantasy, and magic realism in order to critique not only the present-day dilemmas but also to re-examine the historical events of the past.

·         Claire Evans of YACHT will present The Future is Unmanned, a condensed feminist history of the Internet, tracing the role of women from the human computers of the 19th century to the cyberfeminists who made videogames, hypertext novels, virtual reality projects, and non-narrative art pieces on websites and CD-ROMs before disappearing along with the bursting of the dot-com bubble.

·         Julia Holter and Empress Of  will participate in live episodes of the No Effects podcast hosted by Jesse Cohen of Tanlines.

·         Mad Professor will host a Workshop on the History and Future of Dub and also join with Ras Kush, Tippy and Lister for Reggae Hacker Soundsystem, a conversation exploring the evolution of dub and home-made sound system culture, radiating outwards from its native Jamaica.

New renaissance (8)

the New Renaissance Film Festival. NRFF provides a showcase stage in LONDON, UK, for innovative filmmakers and screenwriters from around the world. Our numerous award possibilities give independents the chance to receive the recognition they deserve.

NRFF Vision

The New Renaissance…

The Renaissance in the fifteenth century was a time when art was at its height. Europe produced world-renowned painters, sculptors and authors. Cultural revivals such as these do not happen often, but the digital revolution creates the conditions for a New Renaissance.

Artists have a golden opportunity, once again, to shape culture and to create art for the sake of beauty or truth. This is why we have established the New Renaissance Film Festival, in LONDON, one of Europe’s greatest film cities – to support and champion the first wave of independent filmmakers and screenwriters in this new era.

During the festival we will show about 40-60 short films. This will include a variety of narrative shorts, animations and documentaries. Simultaneously, we run a screenplay competition and will present the awards to the winners during the festival.

Very close to our heart is the Young Talent Award. This is an award for screenwriting and for short films, that will be presented to young talent between the ages of 16-21.

Film is a unique medium, and we hope to help new filmmakers and screenwriters to fulfill their dream in telling their stories and showcase their work.

Would you like to get involved?

30 March 2016 (Hong Kong)– The 40th Hong Kong International Film Festival is held from March 21 to April 4, screening over 240 films from 66 countries and regions around the world.

With an aim to promoting art and culture in Hong Kong, LeEco partnered with HKIFF to kick-off Hong Kong’s first Online International Festival, showing exclusively the most popular and reputed films from all over the world, highlights including the digitally restored in 4K films of Bruce LEE, Berlin International Film Festival Grand Jury Prize movie The Club (2015); The Past (2013) by the Oscar-winning director Asghar FARHADI; Men & Chicken (2015)with Mads MIKKELSEN as main cast, as well as the 4K-restored Taiwanese movie The Boys from Fengkuei (1983) directed by HOU Hsiao-Hsien.  LeEco has also selected other spectacular short films in drama, animation, documentary genre, ensuring to meet the tastes of a wide range of audience.

As one of the icons of Hong Kong film culture, LeEco believes the digitally restored in 4K Bruce LEE’s films – including The Big Boss  (1971), Fist of Fury  (1972), The Way of the Dragon (1972) and The Game of Death (1978) – will revitalize the spirit and martial-arts legends in the best possible way.

The film’s restoration works are conducted by L'IMMAGINE RITROVATA, a top-of-class film restoration laboratory in Italy.  The professional technicians used the original film roll to undergo a complicated digital 4K restoration process, which took more 1,200 man hours to complete.  With the same dedication in mind, LeEco wishes to breathe a new life to the Hong Kong film icon and sustain his inspiration and passion for local film culture.

IFP Film Week is Moving to Brooklyn

Event To Include More Public Offerings and Increased Focus on Series, Digital, and VR Content

IFP Film Week Photo Courtesy of IFP.jpg

After 37 years in Manhattan, IFP’s signature event, IFP Film Week is moving across the river to Brooklyn. The event will set up shop in DUMBO anchored around its headquarters, the Made in NY Media Center By IFP.

Since its downtown beginnings as the Independent Feature Film Market (IFFM) in 1979, IFP Week has evolved into a must-attend gathering for the global storytelling community. It remains the only international co-production market for film – and now television, web-based, and VR projects – in the United States, with over 150 projects from over 22 countries curated and presented as scripts and works-in-progress each year.

“The film industry has changed,” says IFP Executive Director Joana Vicente, “Serialized stories are on the rise and film and television are taking cues from one another. New platforms for storytelling are bursting into the media landscape every year. IFP Film Week is a bold guide in this new frontier, harnessing the energy and ideas of an ever-evolving community that has grown beyond the simple concept of filmmaking.”

IFP moved to Brooklyn— home of creatives and technologists — in 2009 and founded the Made in NY Media Center in partnership with MOME and EDC in 2013. This year, they will expand public offerings, paying increased attention to the fast growing areas of web-based, episodic and interactive content. More than 30+ curated narrative and non-fiction web series, episodes, interactive and app based serialized works will be introduced to both the industry and general public at this year’s Film Week.

In the last year, IFP has started supporting series creators and web-based programming with its new Screen Forward Labs for serialized content, honored USA Network’s “Mr. Robot” and “Shugs & Fats” at this year’s IFP Gotham Awards, and given a $25,000 Calvin Klein “Live The Dream” grant to web series “195 Lewis.” Alumni projects have gone on to screen at the most recent Sundance, Rotterdam and Tribeca Film Festivals, as well as screening online to the masses. “Namaste, Bitches,” for example, has already gone onto premiere online to audiences in the six-figures within a three-month period.

With that in mind, this year’s programming will include a week of screenings, talks, meet ups, exhibitions, and events centered on cutting edge creative content for the big screen, the small screen, the Internet and beyond.

This will include:

  • An expanded offering of projects selected in the IFP Project Forum, the premiere meetings driven forum connecting artists to industry. Featuring new work from both emerging and established artists in narrative and documentary feature films, the No Borders (narrative) and Spotlight on Documentary (non-fiction) programs will continue to do so but also accept serialized content for television, web and app-based platforms.
  • Screen Forward Conference, a four-day program of how great projects can connect with audiences and stand out in a crowded marketplace.
  • Public presentations of sneak previews of upcoming feature films, documentaries, web-based and television series for both industry and general audiences
  • Both at the Made in NY Media Center and throughout DUMBO will be daily showcases of episodic and VR/AR content
  • Expansion of the annual IFP Lab Showcases with the mission of introducing audiences to new discoveries in narrative and documentary feature film, as well as web series, television pilots, VR and app based series.

“IFP Film Week is the place where filmmakers, artists, and storytellers cross paths with people who help move their projects forward.” Says IFP Head of Programming Amy Dotson. “Creators get funding, advice, and opportunities. Industry insiders get to discover new talent. The public gets to screen cutting-edge work first. And Brooklyn is where it’s at.”

The 2016 IFP Independent Film Week will take place September 17 – 22, 2016. More information can be found at: http://www.ifp.org/programs/independent-film-week/ and applications are now live for the Project Forum.

Activities and workshops take place throughout the day with parties and events happening in the evening including the famous closing party at the Muziekgieterij on the Saturday. Our honored industry guest, Michael Hausman (Gangs of New York, The Firm, Brokeback Mountain), will receive the Cinema Trailblazer Award for his contributions to film, and two films he produced will screen as retrospectives: 1985’s Academy Award-winner for Best Picture, Amadeus, directed by Milos Forman, and the groundbreaking, low-budget, Alambrista! (1977), with director Robert M. Young (Dominic & Eugene) also in attendance.

The festival has drawn a diverse group of emerging independent filmmakers representing Sweden, Italy, Guinea, The Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Australia, United States, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, China, Brazil, France, Japan and Fiji. 16 directors are women, many of them multi-threat combinations of writer-producer-actor-director. In addition, the work of eight first-time directors and 14 local filmmakers will be screened.

This year, we are highlighting films about food, music, and dance, reflecting the creative spirit of North Hollywood.

Opening the festival on Thursday morning, April 28 at 11:00 AM is the West Coast Premiere of A Farmer’s Road, a new documentary about sustainable agriculture, featuring Top Chef winner Stephanie Izzard, celebrity chef & PBS host Rick Bayless and the Illinois-based owners of Prairie Fruits Farm & Creamery. With Michael Musto, Kenny Kenny, Amanda Lepore, and others. The directing debut of Fijian filmmaker Cesar Terranova.

“We’re not afraid to be bold and raw,” says Artistic Director Nicholas Goodman, who founded IFFNoHo with his wife, Executive Director Hortencia Goodman, “but we aim to avoid character and story tropes, especially with regard to the depiction of violence and the treatment of women on film.” That said, we are screening a pair of films, The Bigfoot Hunters and a special Midnight screening of The Cruel Tale of the Medicine Man that you could say go over the edge with regard to violence and sex.

We have an exceptional line-up of shorts including Vandal and The Last Journey of the Enigmatic Paul WR, two films beginning their festival run with stops at Cannes and Tribeca, respectively. And we are happy to host the final festival appearance of Marcus Mizelle’s Los Angeles-based comedy feature,Actor For Hire, finishing its glorious run as our Closing Night Film.

IFP Minnesota, a St. Paul-based media arts center, has announced the winner of the IFP MN Screenwriting Residency, a new competition for Minnesota screenwriters. Andy Froemke, of Lindstrom, MN, has won the $10,000 residency out of a field of 99 applicants. His screenplay, THE LOWRIE GANG, tells the incredible true story of Henry Berry Lowrie, a "Native American cross between Jesse James and Robin Hood," who captures national headlines by rallying a mixed race band of outlaws to stand up to the Ku Klux Klan in post-Civil War North Carolina after they gun down his father and brothers. The St. Paul-based residency is funded by the Knight Foundation's Knight Arts Challenge with matching funds by IFP MN, as an annual competition through at least 2018.

THE LOWRIE GANG was selected by a national panel consisting of key influencers in the movie-making industry: Academy Award nominee Mason Novick, producer of JUNO and 500 DAYS OF SUMMER; Ilyse McKimmie, Labs Director of the Feature Film Program at the Sundance Institute; and Kate Hagen, a writer and Community Director at the influential Black List.

In addition to the $10,000 prize, Froemke will also receive support in fostering connections with industry advisors and production companies, free classes at IFP MN, and a staged reading of his screenplay (date TBD).

The residency is the only one of its kind to specifically celebrate Minnesota screenwriters, and was a blind competition (all submitted screenplays had no identifying elements, author's name, bio, awards, etc.). Two sets of panels-one local, and one national-participated in a process that selected 10 finalists, ultimately choosing THE LOWRIE GANG as the winner. All 10 finalists will receive guided mentorships and dedicated classes to refine and improve their work.

To read the full press release, which includes log lines for all 10 of the finalists' screenplay , bios of the Minnesota and National Panels, and more, click here.

The 55th Semaine de la Critique unveils the poster for its 50+5 edition

The oldest among the parallel sections of the Cannes Film Festival, La Semaine de la Critique will celebrate its 55th edition by putting the spotlight on the films and talents discovered since its 50thanniversary. In collaboration with the Parisian agency les bons faiseurs, La Semaine chose the image which better reflects this 50+5 edition: the magnificent actress Jessica Chastain in a scene from Take Shelter, second feature film by Jeff Nichols where her performance in one of her first leading roles was particularly remarked. Winner of the Nespresso Grand Prize at the 50th edition of La Semaine, Jeff Nichols, whose promising and very personal universe was already acknowledged, became a prominent talent with such films as Mud, in the 2012 Official Competition in Cannes, then withMidnight Special, competing for the Golden Bear at the 2016 Berlinale.

In this picture taken from Jeff Nichols’ film, the actress seems to both cunningly and serenely gauge the ground covered since the 50th edition, from Terrence Malick to Kathryn Bigelow, not to mention Christopher Nolan, J.C. Chandor or Ridley Scott.

The splendid career path of these two artists in the past 5 years marvellously illustrates what La Semaine de la Critique mainly stands for: taking up the challenge of new film and discovering emerging talents worldwide since their very first artwork.

Jeff Nichols: “To have Take Shelter included really was a career high at the time. I started to believe in the reality of this amazing career trajectory I've been on since 2011.The NespressoGrand Prize most definitely influenced my career, it elevated both the film, and my reputation as a filmmaker, to a level that would have taken years to achieve through other avenues."

La Semaine de la Critique will be held in Cannes from May 12th to the 20th. Valérie Donzelli will preside over a jury exceptionally composed this year of 5 talents revealed by La Semaine: Alice Winocour, Nadav Lapid, David Robert Mitchell and Santiago Mitre. They will bestow the NespressoGrand Prize, the France 4 Visionary Award and the Leica Cine Discovery Prize for best short film.

The Selection will this year be announced on the 18th of April
