Venice Film Festival's Web Theatre Brings World Premieres to Online Audience

A general view of atmosphere ahead of the 69th Venice International Film Festival on August 28, 2012 in Venice, Italy.

The Venice International Film Festival is pleased to announce that its web theatre, known as Sala Web, will once again make some of the festival's most groundbreaking programming available to international audiences without them ever having to leave their homes. Following the successful launch of the initiative last year, the festival intends to increase the reach of Sala Web for this year's 70th anniversary addition. Sala Web was conceived as an additional theater to complement and coexist with the traditional theaters on the Lido, allowing cinema enthusiasts from around the world to discover the festival's selection online and in real time.

Sala Web's program this year is centered on a selection of feature films from the Orizzonti (Horizons) section. The films and auteurs selected in Orizzonti represent the most innovative aesthetic and expressive trends in international cinema, showcasing the work of both young and well-established directors. Last year's Orizzonti selection included several festival titles that went on to become favorites with audiences, critics and distributors - including among others WADJDA by Haifaa Al-Mansour, THE INTERVAL by Leonardo Di Costanzo, A HIJACKING by Tobias Lindholm and THREE SISTERS by Wang Bing. The full line-up of Orizzonti films screening via Sala Web will be announced after the VFF Press Conference, scheduled for July 25th in Rome.

By making films in its official selection available online on the same day as their World Premieres, Sala Web is part of the festival's effort to combine the strengths of the Internet with the artistic and curatorial expertise of one of the world's major film festivals. Alberto Barbera, director of the Venice Film Festival, commented on the importance of increasing the impact of the festival experience and taking advantage of the Internet to do so: "At this time when technologies and digital are altering the landscape of cinema in ever more new ways, it is especially important to continue to explore and invest in these possibilities. Our Sala Web is an opportunity for selected films and directors to gain additional exposure beyond the Lido, while also providing these filmmakers with a controlled way to test the waters of the international market. This not only expands the reach of film festivals, but also establishes new kinds of direct connections between films and audiences worldwide."

Each participating film receives only one day-and-date screening corresponding to the date of its world premiere in Venice. Online screenings for each film will be available within 24 hours starting at 9pm (Italian time) on the day of the film's official presentation on the Lido. The festival has also emphasized the importance of making Sala Web accessible to everyone with a modest ticket price of 4.20 Euros per screening and all films screening with English subtitles. The number of virtual seats available for each online premiere is limited to 500. Starting in mid-August, users will be able to register on the Biennale website (www.labiennale.orgto access the box office and purchase individual tickets in the form of secure links to high quality online screenings provided by Festival Scope.

Festival Scope is the online platform normally reserved exclusively for film professionals. Festival Scope has partnered with the most prominent film festivals worldwide to bring the artistic discoveries, experience and business opportunities of the international festival circuit online.

The Venice International Film Festival runs from August 28th to September 7th.

B-MOVIE UNDERGROUND & TRASH FILMFESTIVAL IN BREDA  4 -8 SEPTEMBER 2013

From Wednesday the 4th of September till Sunday the 8th of September, the 8th edition of the B-movie, Underground and Trash Film Festival (BUTFF)  will once again be held in the city centre of Breda, The Netherlands.

BUT is a small and intimate, but unique international film festival. Not only is the festival a paradise for B-movie trash and underground movie lovers from around the world, BUT also provides a diverse line-up of unique acts and performances  by musicians, poets, artists and other performers. You won't find a festival similar to BUTFF anywhere else in Europe.

Proving by the increasing number of visitors each year,  BUT Film Festival is an indispensable addition to the existing film festivals in Europe. We notice a lot of people coming back each year to experience the ultimate 'BUT-feeling'.

BUT 2013: Evilution

The theme this year is Evilution. Crazy doctors, poisonous garbage dumps and radioactive radiation can produce the most gruesome creatures. We will show you movies in which filmmakers will show you their wildest ideas. We will also venture into the wonderful world of the smaller creatures on earth with a lecture and film about insects.

Albert Pyun

Main guest this year is Albert Pyun. His name is connected to a long list of movies in which he worked with many great names. He is considered a  pioneer in the action movie genre and made movies like Cyborg, Kickboxer 2 and Knights. But Pyun is not a filmmaker that only sticks to one genre. He proves this in his Nemesis sequence and is 1990 rendition of Captain America. Like Edward D. Wood Jr., Albert Pyun has an outspoken interest for the bizarre, which is why he is often compared with this filmmaker from the fifties.

During BUTFF we will show you two of his last movies and some of his older work. Further, we can't guarantee it yet his latest movie Cyborg Nemesis is still in post production, but might be shown during BUTFF!  In the lead is Kevin Sorbo, better known as "Hercules".

In our next press releases we will inform you about special guest Jan Bucquoy and the Freakshow organized by House of Wax.

Persian International Film Festival Showcases Stories From Around the World

0
0

The Persian International Film Festival (PFF) has unveiled the full program for its 2nd annual event, set to run on 22 August until 1 September 2013.  With films from Iran, Afghanistan and their diasporic communities around the world, the Festival is a celebration of today’s cinema and the stories of Persian filmmakers.

The program offers a diverse mix of films from well-known and emerging filmmakers.  With seven recent features, ten shorts, a full retrospective program, a football themed session and much more, there is something for everyone at PFF.

The official opening night on 22 August will present a screening of A Respectable Family, an Iranian film noir by Massoud Bakhshi. The film, about an academic who returns home after two decades in the West to a family and country he no longer recognises, made a splash in Cannes in 2012 as it reflected the lives of a generation of Iranians.

The drama is a stark contrast to the closing night film, the whimsical Chicken With Plums, a charming French-language tale by Persepolis author Marjane Satrapi and French director Vincent Paronnaud.

The Festival’s opening and closing nights are a tribute to Persian culture with pre and post film celebrations involving Persian Tea, dancers and the ever popular Persian sweets.

Festival Co-Director, Sanaz Fotouhi says, "We are very excited to present this year's program which showcases plenty of great talent from a cross-section of Persian communities both in their home countries and around the world."

"We set out to bring together stories that share that human essence and we hope to break stereotypes and forge new connections through film," says Fotouhi.

Highly anticipated feature films in this year's PFF line-up present a range of current social and political issues facing the Persian people around the world today. It's A Dream, a debut film by Mahmood Ghaffari explores the story of a young Iranian woman struggling to overcome social and sexual inequalities as she tries to pay off a debt; while My Sweet Pepper Land, a film that has come fresh out of Cannes, follows a Kurdish woman who works at a newly opened school despite her brothers' hostility to the idea.

While all films have ties to Persian people and countries, the stories they tell take us from Kurdistan all the way to Japan.  LikeSomeone In Love by Abbas Kiraostami unexpectedly takes viewers to Japan, where an old man and young woman meet in Tokyo and create and unlikely bond that bears no relation to the circumstances of their encounter.

Festival goers will be taken on a journey throughout the festival. The intriguing documentary Kahrizak, Four Views takes viewers back to Iran as it presents an intimate look into the Kahrizak Charity Centre through four unique episodes directed by four respected Iranian directors of different ages and levels of experience.

Amin Palangi, the Festival’s artistic director, says he has seen Persian films take off in the international cinema. "While the Persian cinema has been under the spot light for the past few decades, in the past few years with Asghar Farhadi’s A Separation and The Past, it has been taken in a whole new level in the international scene.” he says.

"We want to bring together films created by both established and emerging directors and present them to the Australian community," says Palangi.

Watch the history of Persian cinema unfold before your eyes in the Special Retrospective Program, featuring the best of Iranian Cinema. The program will present a retrospective on the last 40 years of Iranian cinema, showcasing great works that has made it onto international screens despite the obstacles the filmmakers often had to go through.

Among the series of short films to be shown as part of the main program are films that utilises a combination of landscape and narrative to create dramatic, stunningly shot works. Buzkashi Boys showcases the stark sights of Kabul, Afghanistan in an artfully-shot tale of a boy dreaming to be a buzkashi player - a grueling game of horse polo played with a dead goat. Meanwhile, More Than Two Hours presents a suspenseful story of a boy and a girl wandering in the city to find a hospital, although it is much harder than they thought. And Needle by Anahita Ghazvinizadeh, winner of Cinefondation at Cannes Film Festival 2013, about a young girl living through both the piercing of her ears and her parents’ divorce.

It wouldn't be a true Persian event without football (of the soccer variety). Football is Iran’s number one national sport with unprecedented interest that brings together people of different social, political, and economical backgrounds. Given both Iran and Australia’s success in football recently the festival will dedicate a session to football themed films. This includes the screening of Jafar Panahi’s Offside and a short documentary made by Seifollah Samadian on Iran and Australia’s historical match against each other in 1997.

PFF wants audiences to get involved even after the credits have rolled. For budding filmmakers, PFF will be running a number of digital story telling workshops for newly arrived Afghan and Iranian youth. The result of the workshops will be a series of short clips/films which will be showcased in Parramatta’s Information and Cultural Exchange Inc.

Recent films shown in the festival will be eligible to win the Audience Choice Awards. Audiences are invited to vote for the 'Best Feature' and 'Best Short Film' and voters will go into a draw to win one of the DVD sets by Iranian master filmmakers thanks to Madman.

Managed by Palangi Productions, the Festival debuted last year and will screen films at Dendy Cinemas Sydney.

Stay tuned for more announcements around the Festival

2013 Charleston International Film Festival: A Week of Lasting Memories

The sixth annual Charleston International Film Festival has been acclaimed as the most successful since the festival’s debut in 2008. The 2013 festival was inaugurated on a warm Wednesday afternoon when Mayor Joseph Riley of Charleston signed a decree formalizing the week of the festival, this year and in the future, as Charleston Film Week - a monumental kick-off to the 2013 festivities.

This honor was a testament to all the years of dedicated planning and execution by Summer and Brian Peacher, as well as everyone who supported the festival and its mission to bring the power of film to the general public.

The five-day festival concluded with the presentation of our first Lifetime Achievement Award to Bill Butler, honoring him for more than sixty years of dedicated service in Cinematography. Through the years, Butler has partnered with film icons such as Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Michael Douglas, and Tom Berenger, among many other industry greats. We were honored to have him as part of our event.

As they say in filmmaking “a picture’s worth a thousand words” – so please check out this year’s recap video:

Recap Video 3

Importance of Charleston International Film Festival

Throughout the festival, the magic of cinema transported us to foreign lands, brought us face-to-face with life changing decisions, tickled us with inventive animated characters, showcased the power of music, and examined the importance of family. Poverty, economic struggle, depression, and love were all exposed on the silver screen. From feature films and documentaries to animated shorts, the festival truly helped stretch our boundaries of understanding and acceptance.

Along with the wonderful list of international filmmakers and actors in attendance, we were honored to have Q&A from Chris Brigham, producer behind Argo, winner of an Academy Award for Best Picture, and Frank Abagnale, who inspired the film Catch Me If You Can.

This year’s filmmakers included a young Italian who was inspired by the aftermath of 9/11, a film professor, a woman moved by her brother’s story of overcoming mental illness, a South American director – who is now pursuing his dream in Los Angeles, and two amazing women who showed us how to find happiness in unlikely places. Each brought a story, not only through their films, but through interactions and connections made throughout the festival events. We were blessed to have such a remarkable collection of talent!

Film is a celebration of life. Though the creativity of the writers, actors, directors, and producers, we begin to see a part of ourselves on the screen. It is that emotion and pure energy which makes this week so full of passion and excitement. We would like to thank all the guests who brought their love for cinema and appreciation for the arts to our screenings. Ultimately, it is the lasting impact on the viewers that makes all the effort behind the festival worthwhile.

Awards 2We’d like to thank all the writers, filmmakers, attendees, supporters and sponsors who made the 2013 Charleston International Film Festival a great success!

The 33rd Atlantic Film Festival announces Opening Gala and Atlantic Canadian program

0
0

The 33rd annual Atlantic Film Festival (AFF) proudly launches its program of Atlantic Canadian film selections, including the much-anticipated Opening Gala, to be presented over eight days in Halifax, September 12-19.

"The Atlantic Canadian film selections are the heart of the Atlantic Film Festival year in and year out," said program director, Jason Beaudry. "We’re proud to begin the lead-up to the Festival by announcing the selection of over 80 Atlantic-produced films for this year’s program – a year-to-year increase of over thirty percent."

This year’s Opening Gala, sponsored by NBCUniversal, features the Atlantic premiere of Don McKellar’s, The Grand Seduction. Screening at Park Lane Cinemas on Thursday, Sept. 12, the film is about the small harbor of Tickle Cove that is in dire need of a doctor so that the town can land a contract to secure a factory which will save the town from financial ruin. Village resident Murray French (Brendan Gleeson) leads the search and when he finds Dr. Paul Lewis (Friday Night Lights’ Taylor Kitsch), he employs - along with the whole town - tactics to seduce the doctor to stay permanently. The Grand Seduction is a dramatic comedy of the highest international caliber, blending rural hijinx with heartbreaking humanity. Produced by Roger Frappier and Barbara Doran, The Grand Seduction is distributed in Canada by Entertainment One.

“I don't think I've ever laughed so much in my life making this film. No wonder ... when you're working with Brendan Gleeson, Mark Critch, Gordon Pinsent, Cathy Jones, Mary Walsh and Pete Soucy,” said Newfoundland producer Barbara Doran. “For many years I have admired the films of Roger Frappier and Don McKellar. It was a delight to work with them both.”

Following the Opening Gala film presentation, the Opening Night Gala, one of Halifax’s most anticipated parties, celebrates the start of eight days of fantastic films. Once again sponsored by NBCUniversal, the Opening Night Gala will take place at the Cunard Centre on Thursday, Sept. 12. Throughout the festival, the Atlantic Film Festival hosts several special events and parties to celebrate the movies, the people, and the Atlantic region. Further special events will be announced at the full program launch of the 33rd Atlantic Film Festival, August 20.

The CBC Atlantic Shorts Gala presents nine short films on Sunday, Sept. 15.  The evening will feature works by an impressive cast of Atlantic Canadian filmmakers, including Lisa Rose Snow (NS), Emma Van Zeumeren (NS), Jillian Acreman (NB), Jesse Harley (NS), G. Patrick Condon (NL), Kevin A Fraser (NS), Stephen Arnold (NS), Stephanie Young (NS) and Harmony Wagner (PE).

Featuring the newest and most anticipated films of the year, moviegoers will want to be first in line to see the eight films comprising the 2013 Rogers Special Presentations. This year's lineup includes two films from Atlantic Canada: Jay Dahl’s edge-of-your-seat horror, There Are Monsters and the coming-of-age tale, Hard Drive, by Governor General’s Award-winning filmmaker, William D. MacGillivray.

This year’s Atlantic Focus Program spotlights a diverse group of feature-length films. Festival goers will experience enlightening documentaries by respected filmmakers: Teresa MacInnes and Kent Nason (Buying Sex) and Phil Comeau (Secretariat’s Jockey Ron Turcotte).  Soak up thrills and suspense with Greg Jackson’sBunker 6 and Benjamin Steven’sWisp, and delight in the youthful drama of Hold Fast from director Justin Simms.

In addition to the CBC Atlantic Shorts Gala, the 2013 Atlantic Film Festival will present nine short film programs showcasing the best and brightest of Atlantic Canada’s emerging filmmakers. From drama and comedy to documentary and even an exclusively animated option, the Atlantic Shorts Program is sure to be one of the most popular propositions of the Festival.

"The Atlantic Film Festival is a celebration of film and filmmakers from our region and what a celebration we are having this year,” said executive director, Wayne Carter. “We are so fortunate to have such a vibrant and talented industry making important films for Atlantic Canada and the rest of the world.”

A complete list of the Atlantic Canadian program with film selections, filmmakers and schedule of screenings can be found online at atlanticfilm.com.

Tickets to the Opening Night Film and Opening Night Gala, as well as all Atlantic Canadian film programming, are available exclusively at the Atlantic Film Festival Online Box Office at atlanticfilm.com, beginning Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at noon.

The Atlantic Film Festival welcomes over one thousand film industry members each year. Cape Town to Pyongyang - reporting from Durban DIFF

0
0

Only at a film festival can you experience the underworlds of Cape Town and Bangkok and the beauty of North Korea.

Tourist brochures paint a very different picture. My last day at Diff started with a doccie about the Nice Time Kids, a gang on the Cape Flats. The Devil's Lair takes viewers into the home of one of the gang leaders where death can come at any moment and his wife also lives with this reality.

There are no more screenings at DIFF.

Ryan Gosling can be seen in Only God Forgives, a Thai film nowhere as good as Drive with double the violence and Gosling's dialogue is even less. The film, set in Bangkok's world of boxing and drugs, is very dark indeed. Fans of the Hollywood hunk will be enthralled, although they will cringe as he gets really roughed up. Kristin Scott Thomas can be seen as his mother. There will be no more screenings of the film at DIFF, but it has been picked up for distribution by Videovision.

The top film of the day - and one of the weirdest - was Comrade Kim goes flying. Pyongyang is pictured as beautiful and modern, the people happy and fed. When you look through the propaganda, this is a gem. The story, filled with humour and real emotion, is of a coal miner who wants to be a trapeze artist in the circus. There are no more screenings of the film at DIFF.

Some of the highlights still coming up over the remainder of the ff are Laurence Anyways, Xavier Dolan's three hour long gender bending drama, Cannes winner The Past (Le Passe) and the closing film, Free Angela and all political prisoners.
