Whicker’s World Foundation launches new documentary awards at Sheffield Doc Fest

Sunday 7th June at Sheffield Doc/Fest: the new Whicker’s World Foundation, whose principle aim is to give a much needed fillip to authored documentary storytelling in the UK, today launches three new documentary filmmaker awards worth a total of £100,000 for the promotion of curiosity in programme making, generously funded by a legacy left by the celebrated broadcast journalist Alan Whicker, who died in 2013. Details of the Whicker’s World Foundation and the awards will be announced by filmmaker Kim Longinotto at a special event at Doc/Fest, following the screening of Whicker’s World: Conflict in Kentucky.

Says Mark Atkin, Acting Festival Director, Sheffield Doc/Fest: “I am very enthused that this foundation aims to encourage authored documentary at a time when TV is becoming increasingly formatted and when most foundations have requirements to promote social issues. This is exactly what the industry needs right now”.

The three awards – the Funding Award (worth £80,000 / £10,000 runner up) to a debut filmmaker under 30 years of age; the Recognition Award (worth £4,000 / £1,000 runner up) to the finest industry newcomer aged 50 years of age or over; and the Best Audio Documentary (worth £4,000 / £1,000) to be awarded at the In The Dark audio festival, also part of Doc/Fest - will be looking for a spirit of inquisitiveness that will leave the viewer wanting more, and tell something new and unexpected about the world.

The panel of judges, chaired by Valerie Kleeman, photographer, programme consultant and Whicker’s partner for more than 40 years, will also be looking for projects that are playful with how the story is told, either breaking new ground, or taking a familiar path to come up with a new style.

The Alan Whicker Foundation consultant, top ranking international TV executive Jane Mote, says: “Whicker's World opened my eyes to the most amazing stories, people and places. Alan's unique style and sharp wit was inspirational and I am so excited to be part of creating a Foundation to nurture the future trailblazers for international documentary film-making”.

Jane Ray, the Consultant Artistic Director for the Foundation is a multi-award winning documentary maker and executive producer in radio and television with a journalistic background and nearly 28 years’ service at the BBC. Her awards range from the Sony Award for best news programme (2002) and the TRIC award for best children’s programme (1993) to China’s Golden Kapok award for best director (2014). She worked with Alan throughout the 90s on various projects for radio. She also wrote and directed Radio 4's archive programme about Alan: Around theWorld in 80 Years, presented by Michael Palin.

The first award winners will be announced by the Whicker’s World Foundation at the Sheffield Doc/Fest Award Ceremony, which will take place on the final day of the 2016 festival.

Oldenburg International Film Festival announces first highlights

The Oldenburg International Film Festival takes place from September 16 – 20, 2015.

With worldwide entries from more than 70 countries the Festival is looking forward to an exciting and diverse 22nd issue of the event. The official Entry Deadline is coming up on Friday, June 12, by the end of this week.

Besides numerous international discoveries this year’s programming will present the world premiere of “Godless”, a crime drama based on real events, and Germany’s first TV series, that gives complete artistic freedom to its writer director, Thomas Stiller.

The first highlights:

GODLESS

by Thomas Stiller - Germany 2015

Written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Thomas Stiller, “Godless” is a groundbreaking format in German television. With artistic freedom so far unique only to HBO or Netflix, the writer-director has been given complete license to create a crime drama based on real incidents and dares to show what usual crime shows rarely touch upon: the raw and inevitable energy of a conflict that draws the perpetrator and victim into crime. An adaptation of the Dutch format of the same title, “Godless” is produced and developed by Marc Conrad and his company Conradfilm for German broadcaster RTL II. Oldenburg will present the first three episodes, starring the high profile cast of Matthias Köberlin, Jule Ronstedt, and Ralph Herforth. World Premiere.

NEXT TIME I’LL AIM FOR THE HEART

by Cedric Anger - France 2014

Based on a true story, writer-director Cedric Anger’s thrilling crime drama has been likened to a French ‘Zodiac’, garnering 2015 César nods for both its director and star, Guillaume Canet, for his performance as a notorious serial killer and cop commissioned to investigate his own murders. Ripped from the headlines, Canet’s character is based on Alain Lamare, a real-life murderer who terrorized the inhabitants of the Oise region of France during a 10-month killing spree in 1978. German Premiere.

OBSERVANCE

by Joseph Sims-Dennet - Australia 2015

After his auspicious and award winning debut “Bad Behavior”, Joseph Sims-Dennett returns with a mind-bending journey into the psyche of man. He deftly locates his hero in the politically timely horrors of Snowden paranoia - mirroring Coppola’s “The Conversation”- as his private investigator hired to observe a hunted woman discovers the terrifying shadows observing him. Anchored by its mesmerizing lead actor, rising star Lindsay Farris in a one-man tour de force, ‘Observance’ is an electrifying discovery.  European Premiere.

TRAVELATOR

by Dusan Milic - Serbia 2014

When a 19 year-old ace sniper in the video game virtual world is hired by the Serbian mob to do a real life hit job, artificial worlds collide with explosive daring in Dusan Milic’s knockout thriller, “Travelator”. Oscillating between the tough reality of a Serbian refugee camp and the hyper-reality of a dreamlike Las Vegas, where ‘Blade Runner’ meets ‘Taxi Driver’, Milic breaks genre expectations, masterfully portraying the identity crisis of a young man caught in the kaleidoscope of avatars and artifice. As the teen assassin, European Shooting Star Nicola Rakocevic is a revelation. German Premiere.

CRUMBS

by Miguel Llansó – Ethiopia/Spain/Finland 2015

In the debut feature of Spanish writer/director Miguel Llansó, Ethiopia’s first sci-fi feature is also perhaps the most inspired homage to ‘The Wizard of Oz’ of the 21st Century. The pint-size superhero Candy takes us on an epic post-apocalyptic flight into surreal territory in quest of Santa Claus to grant him his hearts greatest wish. With the sci-fi poetic eye of Andrei Tarkovsky and joyful black humor, Llansó’s wasteland wonderland is a feast filled with re-interpreted and re-purposed symbols from the wealth and power obsessed 20th Century. German Premiere.

THE STRONGEST MAN

by Kenny Riches - USA 2015

Following its debut at Sundance, critics called Japanese-born writer-director Kenny Riches as “the one to watch”. With his hilarious oddball and irreverent tone, Riches unique style has been described as “Terrence Malick directing Napoleon Dynamite”. Exploring the façade of the American Dream, we ride through the less than glamorous streets of Miami with Beef, an angst driven Cuban-American construction worker with biceps as solid as his gold-painted BMX bike. But when his treasured wheels get stolen, the real ride begins. International Premiere.

SUMMERS DOWNSTAIRS

by Tom Sommerlatte - Germany 2015

Nominated for 2014s German Independence Award: Best Short, Tom Sommerlatte returns to Oldenburg with his critically acclaimed debut feature. In this twisted fraternal frolic at the family summerhouse in France, a bullying alpha brother is pitted against his pot-smoking slacker brother, in an upstairs/downstairs pecking order dance with a love triangle. With eleven siblings in real life, including his sister Iris who produced it, Sommerlatte is no stranger to the complexities of family rivalries, and his refreshing spin on a familiar theme is a painfully honest comedic delight.

WASTE LAND

by Pieter Van Hees - Belgium 2014

Set in the immigrant underbelly of Brussels, Pieter Van Hees completes his “Love and Pain” Trilogy with this neo-noir thriller. Named after T.S. Elliot’s poem, he weaves analogies to the costly wounds of colonialism and denial. The discovery of a murdered Congolese man sets in motion the investigation of more than a homicide, as its lead detective, grippingly captured by Jérémie Renier, descends on a journey into to the dark savagery of the soul. Having hosted both “Left Bank” and “Dirty Mind”, we welcome Van Hees back with the third chapter of his psychological voyage.

German Premiere.

MODEL HUNGER

by Debbie Rochon - USA 2015

Iconic scream-queen cult-star Debbie Rochon returns to Oldenburg with her feature debut as a director. Having starred in over 200 sub-genre films, she’s in familiar territory directing fellow scream-queen idol, Lynn Lowry, in this thought-provoking observation of the meaning of beauty. Slashing the mirror of political correctness, Rochon’s raw style resonates with the unfettered boldness of 70s New Hollywood, as “Mommy Dearest” meets “Rear Window” in a basement of horrors and psychological damage. International Premiere.

Fratmen Fratpad World Wide Tribute (Part 2)

The DVD synopsis follows ; “Its deadly. The gossip and the memories. Gone by.  But these videos and songs will not take that away. Due to high volume of requests to what these songs are about an explanation booklet will be published on the blogs soon called ‘Frat Dude Secret Gossip.’ It is those typical things when you live in a very boring suburb thinking nothing is going on but no there is a certain house where 100s of hot fratmen are partying like mad all in secret in Arizona.  The crazy times we have had this is a tribute to those times, songs about more than 60 fratmen just for fun.  Most importantly these songs are non-fiction , they are not random they are about actual people and events all happening  at the fratpad. Well…used too..but it is still there. Once again these fratmen make the USA like the coolest funnest place ever, not a single dull moment.  This is an all men DVD  version which contains music videos that tribute and glorify the hot fratmen all over from the USA because they are just too much fun and you escape reality.  This DVD contains both music videos and some raw behind the scenes footage where the men actually get wild with each other.   A brand new revised audio album version is also out all over   “Fratpad Fratmen (A World Wide Tribute).”  Madonna’s song and music of Vogue was an inspiration for the song ‘The Rise Of Shay in Florida.”

This 2015 edition of the Locarno Summer Academy launches a new section: the Industry Academy, a new training program dedicated to young industry professionals in distribution, sales, marketing, exhibition and programming. This initiative, designed and moderated by Marion Klotz, will be held between 5 and 12 August in close relation with the Industry Days.

Marion Klotz: “We received a large number of applications from many European countries, which is already a relevant sign of interest from the young generation of entrepreneurs for the cinema industry careers. The industry is supportive and truly enthusiastic towards the Industry Academy which is developing, along with all the academies, as a real strength of the Festival.”

The team has selected 11 participants from 10 European countries, representing key-player companies such as Soda Pictures (United Kingdom), Mozinet (Hungary), Praesens-Film (Switzerland) for distribution, as well as New Europe Film Sales (Poland), Doc & Film International (France) and EastWest Filmdistribution (Austria) for International Sales. A young Swiss exhibitor, a German marketing executive, a Spanish VOD distributor and a Belgian observer from Europa Distribution are also part of the delegation. In addition, already exploring the perspective of an international opening, the Industry Academy will welcome this year a Mexican participant from the distribution company ND Mantarraya.

High profile guest speakers have already confirmed their participation such as Matthjis Wouter Knol, director of the EFM-Berlin, Susan Wendt head of Sales at Trust Nordisk and Jon Barrenechea Manager of the british cinema network Picturehouse Cinemas.

The Industry Academy has been developed in close cooperation with Europa International, Europa Distribution and Europa Cinemas, with the support of the Swiss Federal Office of Culture in the context of MEDIA compensatory measures.

The 2015 Industry Academy participants :

  • Emmanuel Pisarra (Doc & Film International, France)

Palm Springs International Shortfest Announces Line-Up For 2015

Festival to Showcase Shorts Directed by Katie Holmes, Bryce Dallas Howard, Tara Fitzgerald and Starring Troian Bellisario, John Cusack, Loretta Devine, Robert Forster, Taissa Farmiga, Patrick Fugit, Janeane Garofalo, Kat Graham, Richard E. Grant, Matt Groening, Jimmy Kimmel, Kate Mara, Rose McGowan, Sandra Oh, Jason Patric, Zachary Quinto, Amber Tamblyn, Danny Trejo, Rufus Wainwright and Kristen Wiig

Palm Springs, CA, June 2015 – It’s time to put on your shorts for the 2015 Palm Springs International ShortFest & Short Film Market. Now in its 21st year, ShortFest will showcase 330 films including 77 World Premieres, 65 North American Premieres and 19 U.S. Premieres. The selection of films for screening and competition features star-studded casts and award-winning films from 51 countries around the world. There are 54 thematically curated programs, which will screen June 16-22, at the Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs. More than 3,000 of the festival submissions are available in the Film Market for industry attendees to view. The complete line-up will be posted on www.psfilmfest.org on June 7 with the online box office launch on June 9.

“The overall quality of the films submitted to us this year was staggering, both in terms of sophisticated filmmaking technique and the diversity of the subject matter and storytelling styles,” said Festival Director Darryl Macdonald. “The difficult part for us was narrowing the 3,500 submissions down to just 330 titles for the final Festival line-up, given the wealth of exceptional work we watched. It’s a testament to the benefits of contemporary film schools and increased access to low cost technological tools that so many emerging filmmakers with a gift for storytelling are now able to parlay those gifts into accomplished, entertaining short films. It makes for one wonderful week of film watching.”

This year’s star-studded shorts feature Academy Award winners and nominees, as well as film and television stars including F. Murray Abraham in the North American Premiere of 411 (USA); Kevin Alejandro in Aden (USA/Taiwan); Kate Mara and Amber Tamblyn in the World Premiere of Almost Not Beautiful (USA); Alex Karpovsky and Troian Bellisario in the World Premiere of Amy (USA); Frankie J. (Canada/USA); Billy Magnussen in A Mighty Nice Man (USA); Ian Harding in the World Premiere of Minimum Wage (USA); Kristen Wiig and Jimmy Kimmel in the World Premiere of Miss Famous (USA) produced by James Franco; Kat Graham stars in Muse (USA); Tara Fitzgerald in her directorial debut for Prick Thy Neighbour (U.K.); John Cusack in the World Premiere of Red Rider (USA); Patrick Fugit and Charlotte Ross in Rita Mahtoubian is Not a Terrorist (USA); Robert Forster in Run Fast (USA); Sandra Oh in the World Premiere of The Scarecrow (USA); Taissa Farmiga in Share (USA) directed by Pippa Bianco; Bryce Dallas Howard directs and stars in solemates (USA); Richard E. Grant narrates Teeth (UK/Hungary/USA); and Jason Patric, Danny Trejo, Rose McGowan and Marisa Coughlan in the World Premiere of The Weight of Blood & Bones (USA).

Throughout the Festival the selected short films are organized into programs covering a variety of genres – including action, comedies, documentaries, dramas, horror stories, thrillers and mysteries– and themes such as altered states, animals, animation, art, couples, crime, culture, dreams, family, games, history, jobs, kids, LGBT, romance, secrets, strangers and road stories.

David Ansen (Writer), Gregg Kilday (Film Editor at The Hollywood Reporter), Steve Greene (Assistant Editor of Indiewire's Criticwire Network), Dan Ireland (Writer/Director/Producer), Roberta Munroe (Writer/Director/Producer) and Kim Waltrip (Independent Film Producer) will serve on the ShortFest jury. Over $115,000 in prizes, including $20,000 in cash awards, will be given out in 21 categories to this year’s short films in competition. The Panavision Best North American Short Award winner will receive a camera package valued at $60,000. First place winners in four categories will automatically become eligible for consideration by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) for a possible Academy Award® nomination. Simple and classy, the 11th edition of FEST: New directors | new films festival opened last night at the Cento Multimeios de Espinho in Espinho, Portugal. With selected guests from Belgium, Greece, Germany and numerous more expected during the week, the festival promises another edition full of carefully selected films and workshops, masterclasses and talks as part of its Training Ground, kicking off today and featuring names like Fernando Trueba, Peter Webber, Guillermo Navarro and Peter Doyle

The director of the festival Filipe Pereira opened this years edition by thanking all the guests that came to the small Portuguese town to celebrate cinema "as without them, what we do would be meaningless".

The opening film 10 000 km, a SXSW and Goya Award winner, is romantic drama about a couple that after seven years of shared life, faces the difficulty of a long distance relationship between Barcelona and LA. With par cinematography the film wins with its great aesthetic and although focusing on two characters, it creates an iviting atmosphere. Following the steps of Beautiful Youth (Hermosa Juventud), that achieved a great success in the festival circuit, 10 000 km is more light-hearted and romantic, yet a noteworthy debut from Spanish Carlos Marques-Marcet.

The 63rd edition of the San Sebastian Festival will dedicate a cycle to new Japanese independent cinema

New Japanese independent cinema 2000-2015 is the thematic retrospective programmed by the San Sebastian Festival for its 63rd edition, to take place from September 18-26.

Beyond the bounds of the films produced by the big studios, the phenomenon of independent cinema in Japan has generated an important source of cinematic creativity expressed in a series of films produced outside the industry. This category includes not only the first works by young directors, but also those by a series of long-standing filmmakers who find greater expressive freedom in this territory outside the clutches of commercial cinema.

The cycle therefore becomes an overview of Japanese independent production in the last 15 years, a showcase offering the opportunity to discover the vitality and energy of the film industry in that country thanks to the work of some of today’s most eye-catching filmmakers.

Among the titles making up the retrospective are works by outstanding figures in Japan’s contemporary film world: H Story (2001) by Nobuhiro Suwa, A Snake of June (Rokugatsu no hebi, 2002) by Shin'ya Tsukamoto, Bright Future (Akarui mirai, 2003) by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Vibrator (2003) by Ryuichi Hiroki, Bashing (2005) by Masahiro Kobayashi, Birth/Mother (Tarachime, 2006) by Naomi Kawase and Love Exposure (Ai no mukidashi, 2008) by Shion Sono.

Alongside the above we will also present the works of several new talents to have made their debut since 2000: Hole in the Sky (Sora no ana, 2001) by Kazuyoshi Kumakiri, Border Line (2002) by Sang-il Lee, No One’s Ark (Baka no hakobune, 2003) by Nobuhiro Yamashita, The Soup, One Morning (Aru asa, soup wa, 2005) by Izumi Takahashi, Fourteen (Ju-yon-sai, 2007) by Hiromasa Hirosue, Sex Is Not Laughing Matter (Hito no sekkuso o warauna, 2007) by Nami Iguchi, Passion (2008) by Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, Parade (Parêdo, 2009) by Isao Yukisada, Yellow Kid (Ierô Kiddo, 2009) de Tetsuya Mariko, Love Addiction (Fuyu no kemono, 2010) by Nobuteru Uchida, No Man’s Zone (Mujin chitai, 2011) by Toshifumi Fujiwara, Saudade (Saudâji, 2011) by Katsuya Tomita, Cold Bloom (Sakura namiki no mankai no shita ni, 2012) by Atsushi Funahashi, The Cowards Who Looked To The Sky (Fugainai bokutachi wa sora o mita, 2012) by Yuki Tanada, Au revoir l’eté (Hotori no sakuko, 2013) by Kôji Fukada, The Tale of Iya (Iya monogatari: Oku no hito, 2013) by Tetsuichirô Tsuta and The Light Shines Only There (Soko nomi nite hikari kagayaku, 2014) by Mipo Oh.

The Japanese independent cinema 2000-2015 cycle is organised by the San Sebastian Festival in collaboration with CulturArts-IVAC (Valencia), the Filmoteca Vasca, San Telmo Museum and San Sebastian European Capital of Culture 2016.

The retrospective will be accompanied by the publication of a book coordinated by Shozo Ichiyama.

The design of the official poster represents the stimulation of the senses prompted in spectators by cinema.

The Festival will run from Friday, 18 until Saturday, 26 September.

POSTERS

The new image for the 63rd edition of the San Sebastian Festival was unveiled at an event in the Newton Auditorium of San Sebastian’s Eureka! Zientzia Museoa. An announcement was also made at the gathering as to the winning proposals of the poster competition called by the Festival for the Official, New Directors, Horizontes Latinos,  Pearls, Zabaltegi and Culinary Zinema sections. Open to graphic designers around the world, this fourth edition saw the highest participation yet, with 1,726 proposals from 415 authors.

The winners are:

In the Official selection poster category, “El espectador” (The Spectator) by the graphic designer and illustrator from Uruguay, Matías Francolino, and the designer from Vitoria living in Uruguay, Blanka Barrio.

The poster “aims to represent the stimulation of the senses prompted in spectators by cinema. A homage to the symbiosis between filmmakers and their audiences”.

In the New Directors category the winner is the poster “Family”, by the designer of Polish origin, Mateusz Marek.

On the subject of his work Mateusz says: “I have tried to capture the freshness of the image conveyed by new directors and the knowledge they may gain in the future. Markers, pens and paintbrushes on A4”.

In the Horizontes Latinos category, “Mi horizonte” (My horizon), by the young designer from San Sebastian, Maite Rosende:

“Exclusively using primary colours and adding a texture reminiscent of the earth, I worked to create a simple image to which we can attribute never-ending meanings and interpretations. The horizon, that line that seems to separate the sky from the earth, is represented here by the profile of a woman’s face with a lost gaze in her eyes”.

In the Pearls, category the winning poster is “Perlas que brillan como estrellas” (“Pearls that shine like stars”), by the designer from San Sebastian, Andoni Tebar Gaztambide.

“Every year cinema regales us with tales of unthinkable, romantic, action, fictional realities... Great films that are screened in festivals all over the world and that are today the pearls of our own event...”.

The poster“Tuberías 3” (Pipes 3) has been chosen as the image of this year’s Zabaltegi section. Its author is the Bolivian graphic artist Marco Tóxico. Marco has exhibited and published in several countries and was selected as one of the top ten 10 illustrators at Ukraine’s COW International Design Festival in 2012. In 2014 his poster was selected as the official image of the Montreal International Film Festival in Canada.

“Given that Zabaltegi is a space dedicated to films with no formal or thematic limits, I thought the best idea would be a poster that highlighted a search, a search which is perhaps somewhat fated never to reach its final destination, but instead to learn and above all to enjoy all the variants along the way. That’s why I decided to use a person who has lost a shoe in a strange labyrinth of pipes. The audience who come along to this unclassifiable cinema has lost something and aims to find it inside the cinema”.

Lastly, for the section dedicated to cinema and gastronomy: Culinary Zinema, the chosen poster is"Marilyn" by the duo formed by Noemí Gómez Lobo from Asturias and Diego Martín Sánchez, from Salamanca, who have been working since 2012 on different projects that explore the hazy limits between art, architecture and design.

“Taking an interest in the point of view of the author, the filmmaker, the chef, the actor, and their transformation into an icon, we began with the idea of the enormously intense yet terribly short-lived experience of taking a bite, out of a film, or a kiss. Created with the cross-section of a strawberry and a drop of chocolate, our intention was to evoke the mole on Marilyn’s lip, turning the actual poster itself into a game. On the other hand, the intensity of the strawberry colour contrasts with a neutral background, like a mouthful of haute cuisine on a plate with no limits”.

The image of the 63rd is completed by another three posters:

In addition to the winners of the competition, the other posters lending their image to sections at this edition were also presented.

Savage Cinema

"C´est pas grave c´est la famille” stands for brotherhood and the ties that bind those who live with a passion for any sport or lifestyle. David Martelleur’s portrait, taken during the 62nd edition of San Sebastian Film Festival in 2014, expresses the closeness of those who share this passion. The iconic skater, whose film, DANGER DAVE, was selected at last year’s Savage Cinema, was photographed by Iker Basterretxea. Design by Federico Yankelevich.

And those of the retrospective sections, created by Roberto Cueto and Eurosíntesis:
