FMX' 20th Anniversary Edition concluded with a special Avengers 2 - Age of Ultron screening in attendance of members from the Marvel team including VFX Supervisor Christopher Townsend. The movie screening rounded off four days that saw an impressive line-up of speakers and presentations as well as 3,200 attendees from 55 countries. Under the headline "Immersion & Virtual Realities - The Future of Content Viewing and Producing" FMX proved that it continues to be an essential hub for interaction and exchange, where Art, Technology and Business meet successfully to discuss the most recent trends in digital entertainment.

FMX celebrated its 20th edition with four dedicated events. Twenty renowned industry professionals showcased their personal milestones from the last two decades as part of the "20th Anniversary of FMX" event. In addition, FMX celebrated 20 years of Weta Digital together with the four-time Academy Award-winner Joe Letteri, it commemorated more than "2x20 years of Industrial Light & Magic", and it paid tribute to "20 years of Toy Story" with Pixar. As part of the focus on the most relevant developments in Virtual Reality and Immersion, FMX was able to welcome VR pioneer Mark Bolas and Magic Leap's John Root to Stuttgart. Gaming insights were provided by key people such as Mark deLoura, the former White House Senior Advisor for Digital Media, while Transmedia highlights came from renowned opinion leaders of the like of Alex McDowell or BabyX-inventor Mark Sagar as well as Visual Communication expert Jacquelyn Morie and Disney's Mk Haley.

FMX and its event partner Festival of Animated Film Stuttgart (ITFS) successfully hosted the Animation Production Day (APD). FMX 2015 was supported by its main partners Animation Media Cluster Region Stuttgart (AMCRS) Autodesk, Backstage MAXON.

ArrowFacts and Figures: FMX 2015 Speakers and Attendees

Visitor numbers increased again despite the continued use of only two venues, the Haus der Wirtschaft and the Gloria Cinema: Approximately 3,200 attendees flocked to FMX on a daily basis. The percentage of professionals compared to the students amounted to 61%. The number of managers and senior managers reached a new high with more than 30%, thus reflecting the overall importance for decision makers to participate in FMX. 270 speakers from 22 countries delivered presentations, workshops and panel discussions. Moreover, internationality among all FMX participants reached an all-time high this year, with attendees from 55 countries. While last year's evaluation showed a third of all attendees to be from abroad, the number went up to 40% this year, with 10% from the UK.

ArrowFacts and Figures: FMX 2015 in the Forum

The FMX Forum turned the Conference content into a hands-on experience with a haptic feel. In 2015, more than 100 Forum Partners contributed their share, and they came from all over the world. The Marketplace accommodated 35 industry innovators that displayed their latest technologies such as 360° videos by Kolor and OptiTrack's motion capture system whose precision was demonstrated by agile dancers during all days of FMX. This year's VR focus was reflected by nine companies including the ITA (Immersive Technology Alliance) as part of the VR Experience, and Crytek's popular VR demo Back to Dinosaur Island. In addition, FMX 2015 looks back on as much as five different Company Suites by Autodesk, Clarisse iFX, the EU project DREAMSPACE, Side Effects and Chaos Group, and 34 workshops by 19 different companies, among them the Spain-based rendering company Solid Angle and MAXON.

The Recruiting Hub displayed a similar variety: Booths were booked by 22 regional and international heavyweights, with ILM, Walt Disney Animation Studios and New Zealand's Weta Digital drawing long lines, especially on Thursday. The talent pool gathering at the School Campus complemented the Forum's success: 18 media schools presented themselves and their curricula to future students.

Arrow20 years of FMX: Anniversary Celebrations with Weta, ILM and Pixar's Toy Story

Terrence Masson (Building Conversation) and Sebastian Sylwan (Visual Effects and Digital Media Technology Executive) kicked the 2015 jubilee celebrations off with the „20th Anniversary of FMX" event and twenty short presentations on personal milestones. Speakers such as Ludwig van Reiche (NVIDIA) or Eric Roth (VES) revealed their highlights that ranged from impressive student films to digital entertainment topics such as instant feedback and virtualization. Joe Letteri, the Academy Award-winning Senior VFX Supervisor and Director of Weta Digital, hit the stage for an anniversary event commemorating 20 years of Weta Digital. Letteri spoke in front of densely filled König-Karl-Halle about the core principles of Weta Digital's approach, using examples from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, bringing the live broadcast areas to the point of near-overflow. Industrial Light & Magic celebrated 2x20 years of ILM with three generations of ILM experts represented by Lorne Peterson, John Knoll and Richard Bluff. Moreover, Ralph Eggleston, William "Bill" Reeves and Eben Fiske Ostby reunited as part of the original film team to look back on "20 Years of Toy Story." A dedicated "Shelley's Eye Candy" screening and a glass of champagne for all FMX attendees complemented the 20th Anniversary events.

ArrowImmersion & Virtual Realities - From Changed Storytelling to Holographic Platforms

Pioneers and trailblazing innovators shared the FMX stage to introduce immersive technologies and opportunities to an eager audience from scientific aspects to the application of VR in theme parks as demonstrated by DreamWorks and Walt Disney Imagineering. FMX was proud to welcome VR pioneer Mark Bolas to FMX. Bolas and Ken Perlin dove into a conversation that covered Bolas' legacy including his vast influence on the development of the Oculus Rift. Bolas outlined his ideas on virtual reality - a place that he calls "elsewhere" - and showcased his first VR attempts from more than 20 years ago that included a digitization glove. Other highlights came from Magic Leap's John Root who looked into the future of immersive entertainment and George Borshukov and his predictions about the use of VR/AR for apparel shopping. Borshukov had vastly contributed to the bullet time sequence that has defined our understanding of VR even beyond the Matrix Trilogy. VR entertainment such as VR headsets and simulators were as much part of FMX as holographic platforms (Microsoft's HoloLens) and wireless VR experiences.

ArrowBusiness Strategies at ExitMercato@FMX, Studio Insights and CEO Summits

With its APD Conference and Closed Door Summits for decision makers from the VFX and the advertising industry, FMX continues to put an emphasis on business and the importance for the communities to keep in step with the times. The dedicated "ExitMercato@FMX" track, which was curated by Thierry Baujard (President of Media Deals), constituted a forum for start-ups and early-stage investors to present their investment portfolio to larger investors and corporations with regard to exit investment strategies. In addition, the  "Studio Insights" (hosted by Dave Gougé, Weta Digital) brought together Chris deFaria (Warner Bros. Pictures), Marc Weigert (Method Studios) and Scott Ross who were offering rare insights into the business side of the films we see on screen.

ArrowVisual Effects: TV Series, Commercials, Virtual Production and The Avengers 2 - Age of Ultron

Visual Effects were featured extensively, ranging from home cinema to the big screen. While industry leaders such as MPC Advertising, GlassWorks and The Mill showcased their latest commercials for television and the web, TV favorites such as Game of Thrones (Mackevision) also moved into the spotlight. Case Studies offered in-depth analyses of current blockbuster hits, with Avengers 2 - Age of Ultron at the forefront. Interstellar constituted a particular highlight this year: Paul Franklin (Dneg) shed light on the sci-fi epic. For the fourth year in a row, David Morin (Autodesk) brought the latest innovations in the field of Virtual Production to FMX that included Guardians of the Galaxy and Transformers: Age of Extinction.

ArrowAnimation from Minions to Wild 'n Strange

Jacques Bled's and Kyle Balda's exclusive insights into the Despicable Me spin-off Minions more than two months before its theatrical release constituted one of the undoubted highlights this year: Anticipation was running so high that two hundred attendees had to miss out on this exclusive glimpse, because the venue filled to capacity. In addition, Academy Award-winner Big Hero 6 and nominee Song of the Sea moved into the limelight as did the family feature Shaun the Sheep Movie. The independent talent that peopled the Animation Wild 'n Strange track featured prolific artists such as Alison Schulnik and Akinori Oishi. In addition, three concept artists brought their vision to FMX, among them Terryl Whitlatch, the creative mind behind creatures such as Jar Jar Binks from Star Wars Episode 1. The rooms were crowded as the concept artists presented snippets from their work.

ArrowGames: Mark deLoura and his Focus on Games Beyond entertainment and Assassin's Creed 4

This year's most prominent advocate for games was Mark deLoura, the former Senior Advisor for Digital Media in the White House Office for Science and Technology as he filled everyone in on his perspective of the use of games to address societal challenges. DeLoura headlined the Games for Change Track that convened games on the Peace of Westphalia, children in civil war or unique Inupiaq cultures. The high visual and artistic quality of games also proved to be a recurring theme at FMX: Ubisoft's Raphael Lacoste immersed himself in the Art Direction and Image Composition of the open world videogame Assassin's Creed 4.

ArrowTransmedia Experiences: BabyX, World Builds and more

The Transmedia focus assembled acclaimed opinion leaders in Virtual Humans and World Building at FMX. For one, there was Associate Professor Mark Sagar (Laboratory for Animate Technologies, Auckland Bioengineering Institute) who brought the latest revolutionary experiment in autonomous learning, BabyX, to an eager crowd of people. Sagar's talk was part of the Virtual Humans Track, curated by Mike Seymour (FXGuide), which was a prime example of technical innovation this year. Transmedia thinker Alex McDowell curated a track named "Traversing Reality: Storytelling in Brave New Worlds" that explored the future of storytelling beyond traditional platforms in AR, VR and Mixed Reality contexts. What's more, he co-hosted the Rilao Workshop - a fictional, collaborative world build designed to create new story universes. Tracks on Animation as Fine Art, the Demoscene and Visual Communication complemented the Transmedia Experiences.

ArrowTechnology from Hardware to Lighting & Rendering

Technology constituted an essential part of FMX. Tracks explored, among others, Lighting & Rendering, Pipelines, Virtualization, Future Hardware (the two latter tracks were curated by Jon Peddie, Jon Peddie Research) and included the diverse Tech Talks and Highlights of SIGGRAPH. Christophe Hery from Pixar curated the Lighting & Rendering presentations featuring an impressive line-up of films that were dissected with regard to their technical specifics and characteristics - among them the upcoming Finding Nemo sequel Finding Dory that comes to the theatres in 2016 as well as Interstellar, Big Hero 6 and Planet of the Apes.

The 21st edition of FMX takes place from April 26 to 29, 2016.

OIFF announces retrospective "Odessa in Fiamme: Occupation / Liberation"

This year’s OIFF Ukrainian retrospective deals with the issues of cinematic propaganda and occupation, which are on the front burner for Ukraine today. Ivan Kozlenko, general director of the Olexandr Dovzhenko National Center, is the author and curator of the programme, centred on the Siege of Odessa in 1941. The selection includes feature films and newsreels produced in the Soviet Union and Romania that present this World War II historical episode from opposite ideological perspectives.

The entitling movie, Venice Film Festival award-winning Italian-Romanian drama Odessa in fiamme (Odessa in Flames) by Carmine Gallone (1942), pays tribute to Romanian troops, who try to free Odessa from USSR Red Army invasion. On the contrary, Soviet films of the programme reflect the same events as the Siege of Odessa by the Romanians. Thirst by Yevgeniy Tashkov (1959) tells the story of heroic defense of Odessa, when the city was left without potable water. Odessa Holiday by Yuriy Petrov (1965) follows the bunch of senior high school students, whose summer and youth are ruthlessly destroyed by the war. A Boy Named Captain by Mark Tolmachyov (1973) is based on the biography of a pioneer-hero Yakov Gordienko.

The retrospective also features newsreels of the period, among others Oleksandr Dovzhenko's Bukovyna: a Ukrainian Land (1940), and Odessa (1935) by French director Jean Lods, which recalls the history of the city and its heyday in the times of Joseph Stalin.

Michael Nyman Band live on Potemkin Stairs
Odessa International Film Festival and British Council Ukraine will present the 1929 highly acclaimed experimental film Man with a Movie Camera by Dziga Vertov with a live music soundtrack from British composer Michael Nyman, in the traditional open-air screening at the Potemkin Stairs. Michael Nyman will also deliver a workshop at the Summer Film School.

OIFF programmes
This year, 670 films from 75 countries were submitted to the OIFF Selection Committee. Among them are 163 Ukrainian or co-produced with Ukraine, mainly dedicated to the events of the Revolution of Dignity and occupation of the Crimea and Eastern Ukraine.

OIFF will also present a new children programme section from the Festival “Children KinoFest” in Ukraine.

As well as last year, OIFF-2015 lineup will include films about the role of civil society, presented in the non-competitive section “Way to Freedom”.

KINO! 2015, Festival of German Films

$

Marketing foreign language films in the United States faces problematic challenges thanks to declining theatrical revenues. The hoped for compensation through new internet distribution platforms has not materialized. Any income from internet services has not matched the limited and declining revenue from theatrical distribution. To make matters worse, Netflix’ share of foreign language films has been declining. Foreign and independent productions are now frequently found on ancillary platforms with a small audience base.  They all must compete with an exploding number of feature films entering these platforms.  On the theatrical side, revenues for foreign language films have been plummeting from a high of 5% of the total box office decades’ ago to an estimated 0.5% share for those released in 2014. The lion’s share of that amount goes to feature films from India. What complicates matters further is the shrinking art house theater niche which housed many foreign language films in the past. As a result German films in theatrical distribution in the United States have a limited income. Mojo reports that to date the revenue of German films released last year amounted to $242,000. Those from France scored $1.7 million.  The largest proportion of foreign language films in the United States originates in India which scored $31 million thus far with their 2014 releases, about half of the foreign language box office for that period. Indian films have a captive audience here offering a broad thematic spectrum from independent and diaspora productions to traditional Bollywood fare.

The annual presentation of German films, KINO!, now in its 39th edition, held from April 9 – 16  has an important function in showcasing the best recent German productions. After 35 years at the Museum of Modern art KINO! is now an independent film festival with a modicum of funding from German agencies, below what France allocates to French films shown here as part of her well established cultural public diplomacy.

TOUR DE FORCE, Hin und Weg, Christina Zuebert,

Tour de Force is a compassionate superbly enacted story of Hannes, suffering from terminal ALS, the progressive neurodegeneration of nerve cells. He is accompanied by close friends on a cycling trip to Belgium. He decided to end his life there under the assisted death system. Apart from his mother and wife no one knew about the purpose of the trip and when his friends find out, they need to adjust to Hannes terminating his life in their presence. Tour de Force was shot in six days involving virtually no rehearsals with actors who had been selected strictly on the basis of the roles. They succeed so well in expressing their reaction to Hannes' death that the audience is immersed into this sensitive story yet remains aware of the issues addressed by the director. As the feature showed, death does not have to be a solitary experience and a more human way is ending life in the company of friends and family. More importantly, no one has the right to tell us how and when to die.

TO LIFE!  Auf Das Leben! , Uwe Johnson

Johnson presents a complex story about a concentration camp survivor Ruth who is  evicted from her Berlin apartment and moved to her new home by young Jonas. He is  homeless, lives in a van and has a stunning resemblance to a man she loved in  the post war years.  Bitter about being forced to move she attempts suicide but is  saved by Jonas who starts living in her place. He discovers her past through a film he  finds there while she is committed to the psych ward of a hospital. He liberates Ruth  and celebrates with her coming to life again at a party given by the inmates where  Ruth presents her cabaret songs. This appealing feature resonates with the audience given its thematic orientation. Yet it  is burdened by too many problems the story tries to cover. Ruth's traumatic escape  from the holocaust, her post war night club involvement with Victor a former war photographer, the exhibit of his work attended by an officer who tortured her whom she  tries to kill and her imprisonment for the crime provide enough material for a film. Yet  there are the distracting subplots of Jonas. He is slowly dying from an incurable illness and  escapes his former life, his father perished from the same disease and  committed suicide. He has a conflictual relation with his girlfriend, etc.  Ruth and  Jonas connect, but their bonding through the vast array of interlocking personal   problems strains credibility.

WHO AM I – – Kein System ist Sicher, Baran bo Odar

Against the current background of wide spread computer hacking and unchecked surveillance of the public and the private sector by governmental agencies and the data  manipulation of identities, WHO AM I is an igneous cyber thriller. Benjamin an  awkward nerd becomes an expert hacker. With his team CLAYS he can crack all data  systems, including corporate computer set ups and the most secret files of the federal  German intelligence service identifying informants. The knowledge gained causes a  bloody conflict with the Russian cyber mafia killing his comrades.  Benjamin is on the  run and ends up sharing his story with the European intelligence agency which creates  a new identity for him.

FLIGHTS OF FANCY  Hirngespinster, Christian Bach

For the first time film maker Christin Bach, the psychodrama Flights of Fancy is a compelling achievement. There are no superfluous elements in this film nor do we face any of the clichés frequently encountered in features dealing with mental health issues. Simon grows up with a father suffering from severe psychotic problems which periodically erupt in destructive and dangerous behavior patterns. He is a famed architect who lost his company because of his illness, yet he is unable to admit his mental problems. The mother still hopes that her husband gets better. Simon lives at home to help his mother and protect his little sister while fully realizing his father’s problems. The father still functions on one level and competes anonymously for a museum design award. But he is driven by the obsession that radiation controls his life and robs his creativity. He attacks his neighbor and conveys delusions to his family. Simone is caught up in this family prison dreaming of a normal life that appears impossible and is haunted by the fear that he may inherit his father’s disease. Without exaggerations there is a convincing presentation of the family interactions, of life in a dysfunctional setting that may disrupt at any time since there is no solution to the psychotic problem apart from symptom relief through heavy medication. Yet there is a glimpse of hope when the father wins the award. In the role of the father Tobias Moretti offers an extraordinary and plausible performance show casing all facets of an individual driven by his inner mental demons.

As in past editions KINO! provided an excellent program covering themes and approaches of remarkable current German  film productions.

Playing it Cool, Review: He’s in love, she has a lover

Playing it Cool Justin Reardon’s debut film Convention started in 2011, but has yet to reach cinemas. His second effort, A Many Splintered Thing, began shooting in 2012, and we now have it released as Playing It Cool. If I were to choose between the two titles, I would find A Many Splintered Thing more interesting and cool, in spite of the obvious pun on Splendoured. Incidentally, the splintered line is actually used in the film. Playing it Cool is a drab title. Chris Evans’ char...

Manaki Brothers International Cinematographers' Film Festival in Cannes

$

The International Cinematographers Film Festival "Manaki Brothers" - Bitola will present itself at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, which takes place from 13 to 24 May. The entire project is being realized in collaboration with the Film Agency of the Republic of Macedonia and the Macedonian Cinematheque. The motto under which we will present ourselves is a "Lens thru time".

The festival will be presented within the South-East European Pavilion. In the year when the world, and especially Cannes, celebrate 120 years since the first screening of the Lumière Brothers, Macedonia and the Balkans also have what to be proud of - the 110 anniversary since the work of the first photographers and cinematographers at the Balkans. At today's press-conference, the Festival Director, Dimitar Nikolov, explained what the purpose of our presentation at Cannes is. Promotional materials of various kinds (cards, brochures, fliers, DVDs with the Manaki Brothers' films...) will be presented to prominent persons from the film industry, sales agents, distributors.

- The promotion in Cannes is very important from several aspect. During the festival days, Cannes is the center of the film world and that's why thought we could take advantage of it to promote our own festival. We would like to draw as much attention as possible to our festival. Moreover, we would like to provide the festival with as much support as possible from European film funds. We have prepared interesting promotional materials, and it would be even more important for us to meet the representatives of the film industry. Those are our potential guests for the 36th festival edition. The 110 years jubilee of the Manaki Brothers is a strong ace up our sleeve - Nikolov said. The original idea for a presentation at Cannes came from the Art Director of the "Manaki Brothers", Blagoja Kunovski.

- When the web-site of the 68th Cannes Film Festival announced that the 120 year anniversary since the first film footage and the birth of film by French brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière are being celebrated, I sat down and wrote the draft-project for Cannes, bearing in mind the great and inevitable occasion - 110 years since the creation of the Manaki Brothers. Therefore, the focus will be on the festival with its past 35 editions and the photographic and cinematographic opus of the Manaki Brothers; at the same time, this is also an excellent occasion to promote Macedonian cinematography, in collaboration with the Film Agency, the Film Professionals' Association and the Macedonian Cinematheque - Kunovski said.

Within this unique presentation in Cannes, we have also prepared a special surprise for the most distinguished guests, the representatives of festivals and film institutions. For them all, our friends from the Tikvesh Winery have provided an authentic gift from Macedonia - the superb red wine "Barovo" ranked with the highest ratings by world-renowned wine critics from the caliber of Robert Parker, with a wine label designed especially for this occasion.

The promotional materials will also feature a brochure for promotion of Bitola and the "Bitola Filmland" project. For this goal we got the support of the Mayor of Bitola, Vladimir Taleski, as well as the Director of the Center of Culture, Borche Dimitrovski.

Release in Ukraine and a step to Cannes

Participation in the children's television festival “Dytiatko” gives rise to future creative implementation of many young talents. A young director from Kyiv which is preparing to conquer the world famous festival felt something similar.

Clear your heart and you will change the world

Fourteen-years-old Mykyta Tymoshchuk is packing his bags, going to Europe. This Ukrainian talent made his way to the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. Short animation film of a young Kyiv citizen “The Island” became a part of this year program of Short Film Corner at the Cannes Film Festival, also this film was invited to take part in the final competition of short films GRRFestival in Italy.

The history of “The Island” began with writing the eponymous ballad, later pictures appeared on its margins... As the author shared, this story about the unknown island somewhere in the ocean. People who live on it are happy, they live in love, labor and unity with nature. One can find the island only by clearing the heart. The young philosopher says that maybe he lives in order to change our such a difficult world, make it brighter and cleaner.

“In the movie “The Island” I showed the world as it should be - pure, sincere, bright. Without evil and violence. Such world may or can be found or created by everyone of us as we wish, there is no need in waiting for some external force. Everything you need to make a better world is already within each of us,” convinced Mykyta Tymoshchuk.

“The Island” has received the Gold Medal at the International Championship of computer talents "Golden Bytes - 2015". The first premiere of this film in the life of the young director took part last Thursday, May 7, in the capital's cinema “Kyiv”. In autumn it will be released in Ukraine.

The first and most valuable

The first step to the pedestal of glory for the movie “The Island” was our Kharkiv Television Festival “Dytiatko”, which is supported by the Chairman of the Regional Council Sergii Chernov. This animation work became the winner of this contest last year.

For the first time Mykyta took part in the festival in 2013 with the animated film “A cat and a cake” and the short film “I will be happy if ...” The film was among the winners, it received a special jury prize. Also during the festival a boy made a "creative task" - the film "The Fifth Element", which won in its nomination.

Mykyta says that for him "Dytiatko" is the start, and the most valuable award for him is the glass disc prize "Dytiatko" because it was the first one.

“Taking part in it and, moreover, winning, children gain faith in themselves, and those who had it, the victory adds strength. It is much easier to go along, it feels as if your old friend supports you”, Mykyta gives his assessment of the festival.

He recalls when he assured himself in how many talented boys and girls in our country are engaged in cinema. I am convinced that children's creativity should be supported if the Ukrainian film industry gains development and succeeds.

“I believe that we should support by: reducing school load for authors when they are working on the project and provide technical assistance of professionals - programmers, video editors”, the young filmmaker expressed his opinion.

Sources of inspiration

Mykyta’s favorite genres are action and detective. Boy is inspired by the creativity of internationally known masters of cinema: George Lucas, Oleksandr Tatarskyi, Yurii Norstein, Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, Hayao Miyazaki, Makoto Shinkai and also his family: mom Nadiia Soloviova and dad Andrii Tymoshchuk, who, by the way, is the director.

Hamster Platon, Mykyta’s pet, inspired him to create one of his first works. Fluffy animal was involved in the appearance of a short feature film "I will be happy if ...".

The boy is not only talented in the cinematograph. Mykyta writes poetry, prose, ballads in three languages, creates architectural projects. Once he just wanted to make a movie and cartoons. Foreign cinema halls are waiting for the Ukrainian Mykyta Tymoshchuk today.
