Celebrating the San Diego Jewish Film Festival’s 25th Silver Anniversary, presented by the San Diego Center for Jewish Culture at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, JACOBS FAMILY CAMPUS, will run February 5-15, 2015.  Sponsored by the Leichtag Foundation.

The San Diego Jewish Film Festival showcases 96 films of the best contemporary Jewish themed films from around the world celebrating life, human rights, and freedom of expression.  The mission of the Film Festival is to offer outstanding world cinema that promotes awareness, appreciation and pride in the diversity of the Jewish people to attendees of the community at large.  Festival programs aim to educate and illuminate through evocative, independent fiction and documentary films that portray the Jewish experience from current to historic global perspectives.

On February 9th, 45 short films beginning at 10:00am to 7:30pm at the ArcLight Theatres (UTC) and the David & Dorothea Garfield Theatre (JCC, La Jolla) will be devoted to short films (THE JOYCE FORUM), which is a juried competitive program of short films with awards being presented Tuesday, February 10th at the David and Dorothea Garfield Theatre by a film industry group of jury members. Tuesday’s program will begin at 9 am with Bagels and Cream Cheese, coffee and tea followed by the announcement of this year’s jury of the winning films.  After the announcement and presentation to the winning filmmakers, the audience will be able to see the winning short films.

In celebration of the SDJFF’s 25th Silver Anniversary, the Joyce Forum has increased their short film selection to a total of 10 programs that include dramas, comedies, documentaries, animation…something for everyone.

A total of 45 short films are a part of this year’s collection with Program #10 at the Garfield being a special program featuring a short film RAQUEL: A MARKED WOMAN who was the mother of 2 boys, moved to Argentina and whose place in history did not exist until the release of this short film by director Gabriella Bohm.  Ms. Bohm will be present to talk about her historic short film. Also, featuring in Program #4 a short film, SIMPLER TIMES, starring Jerry Stiller.“Simpler Times” follows Harry (Jerry Stiller), a recently widowed man in his golden years, who wants a cup of coffee and his daily newspaper. Instead, he finds himself on a bizarre search through town that leaves him newspaper-less and trapped in the world of modern technology. This heartwarming story features Stiller’s trademark comedy stylings as well as an unexpected dramatic performance, and a special guest appearance by Anne Meara, the other half of the legendary comedy duo Stiller & Meara. In addition to the carefully selected short-subject, documentary, and feature length films, the Film Festival features an international roster of visiting guest artists, including actors, filmmakers, and scholars, who introduce their work, participate in panel discussions, and meet and greet with the festival patrons.

Highlights for this year's event will include a private advance screening on February 4, 2015 at 7:00pm for the film festival underwriters to THEODORE BIKEL: IN THE SHOES OF SHOLEM ALEICHEM with a special appearance by Theodre Bikel who will conduct a Q&A session and then entertain the crowd with music at the Garfield Theatre (JCC). This year’s official opening night on February 5th at the Clairemont Reading Theatre will feature a San Diego Premiere of SERIAL (BAD) WEDDING. A French comedy directed by Philippe de Chauveron about the tribulations of a family with 4 daughters whose husbands include a Chinese business man, a Jew, a Muslim and an African-American.  The official closing night film at the Clairemont Reading Theatre will be LITTLE WHITE LIE, directed by Lacey Schwartz who questions her heritage.

In addition to the official opening, the festival will feature a Teen Screen on February 10th of HAVANNA CURVEBALL, directed by Ken Schneider and Marcia Jarmel exclusively for teens.

The Boston International Film Festival was created to celebrate the art of filmmaking and to honor the filmmakers who make it all possible. This is a festival dedicated to rewarding artists for their individual talents and for their creative expression through the medium of film. The festival strives to bring together in Boston local, national and international filmmakers by promoting the world’s most artistic and creative independent and experimental films.

Our Goals
The festival’s goal is to encourage and support the work of worldwide independent filmmakers and to promote their products as an art concept and as a valuable contribution to world understanding.  The occasion of a 10-day festival affords a rare opportunity to promote dialogue between filmmakers and the audience in an intimate setting. The Festival Committee also hopes to provide an international cultural platform for screening feature-length, documentary, short and student works as a lasting institution.
The 2015 Festival will be held on April 9 – 19, 2015.

Please join us as we celebrate and promote the art of filmmaking with our participating  filmmakers, industry guests, and members of the international Press.

BIFF SPC Overview

Project Overview

The BIFF SPC project is designed to help screenwriters produce their own film in partnership with the program. For years many talented screenwriters never have the opportunity to see their stories, vision or ideas transformed into a movie. This program is design to give that opportunity to those under-represented screenwriters.

All projects will be produced on 4K Definition format only which is one of the most advanced video technology today. If you want to know more about this technology you may want to do some research or consult with a professional in the industry about 4K Definition Format.

The BIFF SPC staff will assign one Producer and one Director to lead each selected project. However, screenwriters will also have to act as Co-Producer or assign their own Co-Producer for their selected project. Screenwriters can also be the sole director for the project after evaluation from the BIFF SPC staff of their directing capabilities. This may require the submission of a demo reel from previous projects and referrals from professionals in the industry.

BIFF SPC aims to produce all together short and feature films, plus documentaries as well. All Projects should be produced between July 1, 2015 and December 31, 2015.

Distances between shooting location during production should not be more than 200 miles.

All projects will be produced on a consecutive 20 to 30 days shooting schedule only, with one day off after 6 days of shooting, which can be spread over three weeks. Therefore, studio time in a few months period will be available for editing.

Primary Project Participants
The primary participants BIFF SPC will provide for each project are:

Producers (2)
Director
Production Manager
Production Designer
Director of Photography
Gaffers
Editors

Secondary Project Participants
The secondary project participants’ recruitment are based on internship from art and film students across New England and volunteers to fill more than 20 open necessary positions in each production project. To date BIFF SPC has over one hundred available interns and volunteers for the program.
BIFF SPC has three (3) phases of Production support.

1- Pre-Production Support
Selected screenwriters/Producers will have to sign Co-Production Agreement in partnership with BIFF SPC before going into production. Producers will have to complete a number of important agreements in order to fully secure all rights to the motion picture.

Depiction Releases must be used to purchase the right to portray someone in any production in this program (especially for documentaries) unless if the content of the production are forms of expression protected by the First Amendment.

Copyright releases must be secure carefully for Film Clips, Still Photos, Artworks, and Music to ensure that all necessary rights are being acquired from the owner or the seller of these products to be incorporated in the project.

Product Placement from manufacturers must be arranged with in-house departments from companies who are willing to supply samples of their products in a film for promotion. However, due to the limited amount of time for Pre-Production, working through product placement agents to obtain Product Release is strongly recommended for time consuming since these agents may represent products from several manufacturers.

Crew recruitment for any project will be conducted by producers. Work-for-hire agreements must be in writing and signed by all parties making a creative contribution to the picture before work commences. Internship and voluntary agreements must also be in writing and signed by all parties before work begin.

Casting for any project will involve the producers, director and a possible Casting Director (to be determined later). Union and Non-Union actors can be hired. However, due to anticipated budget size, all projects will produce under the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Limited Exhibition Agreement. SAG has developed this particular contract to accommodate lower-budget movies. Depiction Releases should be obtained from all actors appearing in the picture.

Locations agreements should be sought from landowners or land possessors for private property and from the appropriate government entity for public property. All shooting locations must be secured prior to production. Releases must be secured for every single location.

Insurance coverage for all production must be secured for shooting only which should cover for cast, crew, equipment and location. Insurance should be by term to expire after all shooting is completed.

Production Schedule for shooting must have 20 working days. The Producers should plan carefully with all cast and crew for availability. Addresses of locations and timing for shooting must be included in the schedule and well coordinated.

2- Production Support

Perspektive Deutsches Kino 2015: Young Filmmakers Display a Keen Awareness of Form

With 14 films, including nine full-length and five medium-long fictional and documentary films (30 to 63 min), the selection for the Perspektive Deutsches Kino 2015 has now been completed.

The programme will open with the German-French co-production Im Sommer wohnt er unten (Summers Downstairs / produced by Osiris Media, Berlin and Osiris Media France, Saint-Palais-sur-Mer), a debut film by actor and director Tom Sommerlatte. This fictional feature is about two brothers who meet with their partners at their parent’s summer house on the French Atlantic coast. From the start, they are caught in a web of dependencies and their roles in their families. However, through a series of power plays, constellations begin to shift. Filmed in cinemascope, Sommerlatte gives his ensemble of performers so much scope that the protagonists’ individual stories take on universal dynamics.

In Brodie Higgs’s directorial debut, Elixir (produced by Elixir Films, Berlin; Elixir Films, Woollahra), a group of provocative artists lives together in a very elaborately decorated factory loft in Berlin. They are planning a political-artistic action at the fashion show of a hip designer. With this German-Australian co-production, the two dffb graduates Susanne Mann and Paul Zischler exemplify the trend, also among a new generation of filmmakers, to produce internationally.

Bube Stur (Stubborn Boy), a co-production of the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (dffb), and the Film University Babelsberg – Konrad Wolf, is the graduation film of director Moritz Krämer (dffb). It is the tale of a young city woman who is assigned work hours at a milk farmer’s in a small village in the Black Forest Highlands. The mountains in the background form an impressively vast panorama that stands in contrast to the narrow world of the villagers. The naturalistic images, somewhat documentary in style, help acquaint the viewer with the idiosyncrasies of the language, land and people.

These three fictional features are all shot in cinemascope and reveal their directors’ keen awareness of form, a quality also found in the four documentaries invited to this year’s Perspektive. In Freiräume (Unoccupied / produced by KHM, Cologne), director Filippa Bauer focuses consistently throughout the film on the living spaces of four women who are separated, divorced or widowed. Heard in off-camera interviews, but not seen, they talk about the spatial and emotional void that has been left by their children after they moved out - and how they are dealing with this situation.

In Sag mir Mnemosyne(Tell Me Mnemosyne /produced by Lisa Sperling), director Lisa Sperling sets out to find traces of her deceased great uncle, cinematographer Karl-Heinz Hummel. Here, too, the protagonist is not seen but presented through the places where he worked and footage from his films. An essayistic documentary film whose images are a tribute to the great movies of the past. Also screening in this programme is Anabela Angelovska’s 30-minute documentary Hakie – Haki. Ein Leben als Mann. (Hakie – Haki. Living as a Man. / produced by Anabela Angelovska) about 71-year-old Hakie, who was born as a girl but raised as a boy in Albania.

The final film of the series is the documentary Sprache:Sex (Sex:Speak / produced by Sprechfilm, Berlin) by Saskia Walker and Ralf Hechelmann. In individual, very personal conversations, which are marked by a great openness, 13- to 74-year-olds talk about their intimate private lives and sexuality. The filmmakers have assembled these interviews so that the subjective views of their protagonists come together to form a bigger story that expands into the philosophical.

On February 15, 2015 - Berlinale Publikumstag - the Perspektive will present the winning films of the FGYO-Award Dialogue en perspective, the Max Ophüls Award 2015 as well as the First Steps Award 2014 for Best Documentary (DieMenschenliebe / The Humanitarians, directed by: Maximilian Haslberger).

Berlinale Shorts: White Flags Are More Visible!

27 films from 18 countries will be competing for a Golden and a Silver Bear, as well as the nomination for best short film at the European Film Awards and the first-ever EUR 20,000 Audio Short Film Award. This year’s members of the International Short Film Jury are documentary filmmaker and curator Madhusree Dutta from India, Turkish artist Halil Altındere, and producer and festival director Wahyuni A. Hadi from Singapore. Screening in competition are the latest works of Nadav Lapid, Amit Dutta, Jennifer Reeder, Matt Porterfield, artist duos Daniel Schmidt & Alexander Carver, Mischa Leinkauf & Matthias Wermke in collaboration with Lutz Henke, Billy Roisz & Dieter Kovačič, among many others.

Reflections on the current social and political conditions, in which the order of subject, predicate and object have been permanently suspended, pervade the programme and generate all kinds of symmetries. Independently of large production budgets, filmmakers today have the possibility of using analogue and digital technologies to fill cinematic space with hypotheses on and solutions to relevant issues.

What images have the power to dispel the pleasure found by some in being a soldier? Israeli director Nadav Lapid asks himself this question and then discovers an image that is able to do exactly that in Lama? (Why?). In Japan, there’s a new term since Fukushima: “atomic divorce”. It is what the many divorces are called that have been filed all over Japan in the aftermath of the catastrophe. Christian Bau attempts to capture this phenomenon in Snapshot Mon Amour. David Muñoz visits a Syrian refugee camp in Lebanon. The production of his film El Juego del Escondite (Hide & Seek) relates directly to the question of what enables a refugee to remain the subject of his or her own narrative. Then there is the quintessence of artist intervention in public space – the raising of white flags atop the Brooklyn Bridge last summer in New York City –  which can be seen as either an affront or a chance: the documentary Symbolic Threats by Leinkauf, Wermke and Henke offers a number of interpretations.

Mumblecore, a subgenre of US independent film, has made the leap across the ocean: Matt Porterfield’s Take What You Can Carry tells of a young woman who is a foreigner in Berlin – and in doing so portrays Generation Y, with performance group Gob Squad as its mouthpiece. Jennifer Reeder’s Blood Below the Skin gives a glimpse of the tender and tangled web of love and dependency between a mother and her daughter that goes beyond the traditional allocation of roles.

German short films are making a strong showing, which can be ascribed, among other things, to intensive funding policies. “Yet the fact that for a long time now short films have not been limited to 15 minutes, but are on the average 22-minutes long, should - if German cinema is to remain competitive – be taken into account when revising film funding regulations” says Maike Mia Höhne, curator of Berlinale Shorts.

In February 2015, the Golden Bear for the Best Short Film will be awarded for the 60th time. A special programme, titled The Golden Night of the Short Bears, with a selection of films from 60 years of the Berlinale will be held at the Zoo Palast on Saturday, February 14.

He had a lot of film, did you know about the films or did you come upon when you were researching? Was he actually married to the mother of his child?

AdaptLab: from page to screen

This year L’immagine e la parola (19 – 22 March) will be joined by a session of AdaptLab, a workshop on the adaptation of literary works for the screen, developed by TorinoFilmLab and addressing industry professionals.

This major initiative from TorinoFilmLab will take place at Locarno for the very first time. AdaptLab will hold its inaugural session from 19 to 25 March, a workshop for directors and screenwriters from around the world who want to work in the field of adapting literary works for the screen.

Twelve specially selected participants will be working on screen adaptations involving their own projects or based on novels chosen in advance by TorinoFilmLab. AdaptLab will follow every stage of the adaptation process, including by allowing participants to showcase their work to an audience of industry attendees at the next Meeting Event of TorinoFilmLab, scheduled for November. Participants will be mentored by three tutors who will be their guides along the complex adaptation pathway, fostering the exchange of ideas and the development of the various projects through group sessions and on-line networking.

Among the books already picked out for adaptation is local Swiss writer Claudine Giovannoni’s novel Il segreto degli Annwyn (published by Ulivo, 2013).

Nadia Dresti, Delegate to the Artistic Direction and Head of International, Festival del film Locarno: “The opportunity for L’immagine e la parola to host an event of international standing such as AdaptLab is a source of considerable satisfaction for us. Thanks to funding from the Region this year we are in a position to put on L’immagine e la parola in tandem with a major event for industry professionals, raising the profile of our spring program still further.”

The Locarno session of AdaptLab is supported by the Regional Development Office for the Locarno Area and Vallemaggia.
