28th Leeds International Film Festival announces full programme including Birdman as Closing Film

Birdman | Emma Stone and Edward Norton | Picture

LIFF28 announces the critically-acclaimed Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) as its closing film in a unique joint UK Premiere with Brighton’s CINECITY film festival, which will open with the film on the same date, 20th November. The highly-acclaimed black comedy Birdman is one of the most anticipated films of the year. Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu (Amores Perros, 21 Grams), Birdman is the story of an actor - famous for portraying an iconic superhero - as he struggles to mount a Broadway play in a bid to reclaim his past glory. In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself. Michael Keaton is brilliant in the leading role, hilariously parodying his Batman persona.

Chris Fell, Director of Leeds International Film Festival says: ‘Birdman is one of the most anticipated films of the year and we are delighted to bring the UK Premiere to two major events in different parts of the country on the same date. Regional film festivals like LIFF and CINECITY are working together increasingly to grow the UK audience for films, both with and without distribution, and the joint UK Premiere of Birdman is a great boost for closer collaboration.’

Tim Brown, Co-Director of CINECITY - The Brighton Film Festival says: ‘We are delighted to present Birdman in this unique collaboration with 28th Leeds International Film Festival and 20th Century Fox. It’s wonderful to be able to present the UK premiere of such a keenly anticipated film as a simultaneous screening - to open and close two of the UK's key regional film festivals on the very same evening. We would like to thank 28th Leeds International Film Festival and 20th Century Fox for making this special event possible.’

The 28th Leeds International Film Festival runs from 5th to 20th November 2014 and features the best new and classic cinema from around the world, including comedy, drama, thrillers, animation, documentaries, music film, short film and horror, sci-fi and cult screenings across the film festival’s five strands (Official Selection, Retrospectives, Fanomenon, Cinema Versa and Short Film City). There are over 250 screenings during 16 days at venues across the city including Leeds Town Hall, Hyde Park Picture House, Everyman Leeds, City Varieties, Cottage Road, Vue and many more.

Other Official Selection special previews alongside Birdman include Winter Sleep, Palme d’Or winner at Cannes. Undoubtedly one of the films of the year, it is the latest from Turkish master Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Uzak, Once Upon a Time in Anatolia). Set in the extraordinary landscapes of rocky Cappadoccia, the film is a complex and enriching drama about a hotel owner’s relationship with those around him as the onset of winter fuels conflicts among them. Goodbye to Language 3D, another huge success at Cannes, which finds legendary director Jean Luc-Godard exploring the 3D medium, will also feature.

Exclusive presentations in LIFF28’s Official Selection include UK Premieres of No One’s Child, a sensitive and compelling debut which won the main prize at Venice Critics’ Week for its portrayal of a child raised by wolves in the Bosnian woods; Modris, a Latvian coming-of-age story about a young gambler’s relationship with his parents, selected at Toronto International and San Sebastian Film Festivals; and Special Previews of The Drop starring Tom Hardy and the late James Gandolfini; Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game starring Benedict Cumberbatch; and Wild, the new film starring Reece Witherspoon from Jean Marc-Vallee, director of Dallas Buyers Club.

Fanomenon, LIFF28’s strand dedicated to horror, sci-fi and cult screenings has the line-up for its globally renowned Day of the Dead 8 event headlined by a Special Preview of Tusk, the new horror-comedy by director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Mallrats), while a Special Preview of ABCs of Death 2 leads its legendary all-night horror marathon Night of the Dead XIV. Anime fans will be treated to The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness, an unprecedented behind-the-scenes documentary about Studio Ghibli, full of fascinating insights into the inner workings of the celebrated Japanese animation studio founded by filmmakers Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, and producer Toshio Suzuki. The full Fanomenon programme gives horror fans first opportunity to see highly anticipated new releases with UK Premiere of Patch Town, A Masque of Madness and Asmodexia, and the English Premiere of Witching and Bitching.

LIFF28’s documentary and music film Cinema Versa will welcome two very special guests. Acclaimed singer-songwriter, former frontman of Orange Juice and performer of hit ‘A Girl Like You’ Edwyn Collins will appear for a Q&A and musical performance at Hyde Park Picture House to accompany a screening of the film The Possibilities are Endless, about his gradual recovery from a cerebral haemorrhage. DJ Gilles Peterson will appear for a Q&A with his film Brasil Bam Bam Bam: The Story of Sonzeira, about his passionate project to create the Brazilian super-group Sonzeri. The UK Premiere of Heaven Adores You examines the life of much-missed US indie musician Elliott Smith. LIFF28 will break new ground with Once in a Lifetime, a music film event where we will give Leeds Town Hall’s Victoria Hall a makeover, replacing its traditional seating with festival-style deck chairs to create a special atmosphere that celebrates concert films with the UK Premiere of a brand new digital print of Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense, and The Who’s The Kids Are Alright, 1991: The Year Punk Broke (starring Nirvana and Sonic Youth) and the Beastie Boys’ Awesome; I __ Shot That! There will be street food available and drinks by Northern Monk Brewery.

Testament of Youth opens LIFF28 and leads biggest ever line-up of new films from Yorkshire

The 28th Leeds International Film Festival opens on Wednesday 5th November at Leeds Town Hall with Testament of Youth, which leads the festival’s biggest ever line-up of feature films produced in Yorkshire. Testament of Youth is the first big screen adaptation of Vera Brittain’s iconic and powerful memoir about a fiercely independent young woman from Yorkshire who receives a scholarship to Oxford and falls in love with her brother’s close friends just as WWI looms. From award-winning television director James Kent, Testament of Youth stars Alicia Vikander, Kit Harington, Dominic West and Emily Watson. LIFF28’s Opening Night will be a double Yorkshire spectacular of particular interest to fans of the festival’s Fanomenon horror and cult film strand, as we follow Testament of Youth with the World Premiere of The Taking at Leeds Town Hall. The Taking is an intense new thriller directed by rising filmmaking talent Dominic Brunt, who will make a special guest appearance along with cast members. Known foremost for his role as Paddy on ITV’s Emmerdale, Brunt is an emerging filmmaking talent with a penchant for suspense.

Catch Me Daddy and X+Y, two other films which were supported with investment from Screen Yorkshire’s Yorkshire Content Fund also feature at the festival. Cast and crew will be in attendance for Cannes Film Festival selection Catch Me Daddy, a remarkable and visceral chase thriller by Daniel Wolfe (the award-winning director of Plan B’s music videos), in which a girl on the run from her family is hiding out in West Yorkshire when her brother arrives in town with a vicious gang to track her down. British screen favourite Sally Hawkins and Asa Butterfield star in Toronto International Film Festival hit X+Y, about an autistic maths prodigy who begins to experience the world differently under the guidance of an unconventional maths teacher.

Celebrate Classic Cinema from around the world with LIFF28 Retrospectives

Leeds International Film Festival is renowned for its exceptional annual Retrospectives, which present inspired selections of classic films from throughout cinema history. The Swedish director Ingmar Bergman’s films are admired by Hollywood greats from Woody Allen to Martin Scorsese, who both appear in the new documentary Trespassing Bergman which has its UK Premiere at LIFF28, and leads a selection of Bergman’s films made on the Faroe Islands, including Persona and Through a Glass Darkly. Spanish filmmakers Luis Garcia Berlanga and Juan Antonio Bardem have eight of their magnificent films featured, including Berlanga’s sharply observed black comedy The Executioner and Bardem’s noirish melodrama Death of a Cyclist.

The centenary of the First World War is commemorated with War and Cinema, in which classic silent films and enlightening documentaries provide a unique perspective on its cinematic heritage, with screenings at the Royal Armouries and Jean Renoir’s classic La Grand Illusion in Leeds Town Hall. LIFF28’s Masters of Film Comedy selection plays out over one day, with Bill Murray’s Groundhog Day at Leeds Town Hall and Buster Keaton masterpiece The General with live musical  accompaniment at City Varieties.

2001: A Space Odyssey screens in Leeds Town Hall for the third consecutive year at LIFF due to popular demand, as part of the BFI’s Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder season. We will also celebrate the season with Letters from a Dead Man and Visitor to a Museum, two extremely rare post-apocalyptic films by visionary Russian director Konstantin Lopushansky.

No area of cinema history could be of greater cause for celebration at LIFF28, of course, than the 100th Birthday of the city’s beloved Hyde Park Picture House on Friday 7th November. The cinema will present a day free screenings as part of Leeds Free Cinema Week.

The UK Premiere of Vertical Cinema to launch the first Leeds Free Cinema Week

The UK Premiere of acclaimed live event Vertical Cinema will launch the first Leeds Free Cinema Week, a new audience initiative from Leeds International Film Festival. Opening Leeds Free Cinema Week in the spectacular setting of Left Bank on Cardigan Road on Friday 7 November, Vertical Cinema is a mesmerising light and sound experience that captivates the senses with hypnotic images and an amplified static soundscape that reverberates throughout the site. Funded for its presentation at LIFF28 by Leeds Inspired, Vertical Cinema features newly-commissioned work from ten renowned experimental filmmakers and audio-visual artists to be projected on a giant screen using a custom built 35mm projector.

Leeds Free Cinema Week launches as part of LIFF28 with a unique programme of film screenings and events from 7 to 13 November, all free of charge. As well as Left Bank, other participating venues will include Leeds Town Hall, the Hyde Park Picture House, Royal Armouries, The Tetley, The Reliance, and Chapel FM in East Leeds. The full programme for Leeds Free Cinema Week will be announced during LIFF28’s programme launch.

For the 2012 Challenge, teams had to contend with a large brightly-colored snowflake sugar cookie and a tagline from Fight Club.   For 2013, the Challenge was even more difficult -- Teams had a tagline from Ghostbusters and Gray Line New York provided each team with one-hour private shooting time on a double-decker sightseeing tour bus, complete with Tour Guide and Driver.  Visit the WFA YouTube playlist to view all of the amazing films.

The 2014WFA 48-Hour Film Challenge gets under way on Friday November 7 at 8pm.  A representative from each team must come to our offices at 419 Lafayette Street, New York NY 10003 at 8pm to sign in to the Challenge.  Entries may be shot either via traditional filmmaking equipment or teams can do the whole thing on smartphones.  There is no fee to participate in the challenge, but teams must pre-register to ensure a spot.

Completed films are uploaded to YouTube to garner the coveted "Fan Favorite" vote – for the 2013 Challenge, films received 65k views!

On Friday November 21, the best entries will be screened at Blondies (212 W 79th St, New York NY 10024) followed by an Award Ceremony, awesome prizes and networking party.  Over $7k in prizes will be awarded for BEST PICTURE and FAN FAVORITE.  Prizes generously provided by B&H Photo, Ride of Fame, Indoor Extreme Sports, The Paint Place, Chelsea Piers, Sleep No More / The McKittrick Hotel, Pole Position Raceway, NY SKYRIDE, City Wine Tours and others!

Cellar Door Film Festival Announces Line-up for CDFF'14!

Ottawa’s Cellar Door Film Festival is excited to announce the line-up for its inaugural festival, which screens in Ottawa November 7-9, 2014. All screenings take place at Club SAW and are generously supported by CDFF’s presenting sponsor, The School for Studies in Art and Culture at Carleton University, as well as supporting sponsors the Alumni Association of Carleton University, GNA Heating and Cooling, The Haunted Walk of Ottawa, and Used Ottawa. CDFF presents Ottawans with their first festival of speculative cinema with four feature films and eleven short films across the genres of horror, sci-fi, and fantasy. These films were chosen from a healthy group of submissions that came from twenty-six countries across four continents.

CDFF 2014 opens with the feature presentation of Roseville, which is the first horror/psychological thriller ever from Bulgaria. Opening night includes a local emerging talent before the Balkan flick, for Roseville will be preceded by the short film Beauty Sleep (pictured) by Andrew Robinson. Beauty Sleep, which draws inspiration from genre masters like David Lynch and John Carpenter, comes to Cellar Door after premiering at the Toronto Independent Film Festival.

The feature presentations also include the Canadian horror film Dys- from director Maude Michaud. Dys- is a visceral and distinctly feminist body horror film. It’s not for the faint of heart!

Fantasy fans enjoy the Sunday screening of The Dragonphoenix Chronicles: Indomitable from Greek director Thanos Kermitsis. Dragonphoenix, like Roseville, highlights emerging talents in the genre scene, for the film is the first Greek epic fantasy. It’s been exciting audiences around the world and we hope film fans in the 613 are just as enthusiastic. CDFF finishes with a happy ending thanks to the surreal horror/thriller/western/queer/comedy The Samurai from director Till Kleinart.

In addition to the features, Cellar Door presents a range of shorts across genres and countries. Highlights include the Tarkovsky inspired Stalker’s Dream, the Canadian psychological thriller We Wanted More, and the animated fairy tale The Cold Heart. CDFF includes two other Ottawa shorts in addition to Beauty Sleep, the philosophical The Phoenix by Carmello Zucco and the Twilight Zone-y Experiment 467 by up-and-comer Dylan Hunt-Weeks. Experiment 467 effectively uses Ottawa’s Diefenbunker as eerie and atmospheric setting. Both local filmmakers will attend Sunday’s shorts screening for Q&As and Maude Michaud will also be present on Saturday to chat Dys- with local film fans, if CDFFers want to enhance the festival experience with post-screening discussions.

≪Notes and Quotes from the Press Conference≫

Yasushi SHIINA - Director General, Tokyo International Film Festival(TIFF & TIFFCOM)I would like to emphasis major objectives of the festival are to motivate people in the movie industry while strengthening brand-recognition of the TIFF among general consumers by introducing worth to watch movies. We are aiming at win-win situation that having strong name recognition of TIFF to lead growth of the movie industry and getting more audience to see movies.

Daihachi YOSHIDA (Director, “Pale Moon” from Competition section)When I read the novel, I became interested in story angles about a woman who is indulged by a man and money that represent issues in the Japanese society. It was very lucky to have Rie MIYAZAWA the actress for the movie as she has been devoting playing at theater past 7 years. I am looking forward talking with people who visit the festival and also to capture the excitement and energy that everybody has in the world of film making.

Miki NAKATANI (Festival Muse)

I am honored to be the festival muse and would like to participate in the festival as a big movie fan as well. Films helped me out from loneliness and sadness, while giving joy, happiness, and fulfillment. I guess film has a role to sooth and heal people in their busy life, and sometimes make them escape from their reality and they can dream. Film has such a power, I believe.

Video message from ICHIKAWA Somegoro Ⅶ (Special Night Event at Kabukiza Theatre)I will give a Kabuki performance this year, TIFF2014 presents Special Night Event at the Kabukiza Theatre. The Shakkyo is a classic and popular Kabuki dance. I play the role of a lion-like animal that is an icon of strength. It is great honor for me and for Kabuki, as well, to present Kabuki to guests from around the world at a special Kabuki theatre. Regarding the screening of Chaplin’s “City Lights” at the Kabukiza Theatre, Kabuki people were impressed by “City Lights” and created a Kabuki story adopting concept of the film. I feel that this event was destined to be shown at the Kabukiza Theatre.

≪Section introductions≫

Competition - Yoshi YATABE, Programming Director

This year, we might say the common theme among the competition films is about the "people have their backs to the wall", who have been in cornered. Because in the changing society people cannot avoid the impact of such changes in the environment, so they have been in cornered in their situation and they have to escape from their precariat situation. Even though they are in different situations all the films are about such cornered people getting into the next stage. It is all about “How to live tomorrow?” That is the theme and that is the common theme among all films in the Competition section.

Asian Future & CROSSCUT ASIA #01 Thai Fascination-Kenji ISHIZAKA, Programming Director

The Asian Future section is for first or second feature films made in Asia and established last year. We increased the competition films from 8 (last year) to 10 this year, and we selected various types of movies from 10 different countries. 9 out of 10 films are World Premiere at TIFF, so we keep searching fresh films from all Asian countries and regions. These 10 films are selected from nearly 250 films in our competition, their stories are very rich and mostly based on record or memory about the past and the changes in the present. Because Asian countries are undergoing modernization and there are drastic changes in those countries.

Regarding CROSSCUT ASIA, it is the first TIFF and Japan Foundation Asia Center’s collaboration series starting from this year. We choose Thailand as the first special selected country because we have not chosen one country for a series for a long time, so we wanted to revisit Thai film which has diversity from art film to horror. Many directors and actors/actresses are coming to TIFF from Thailand.

Japanese Cinema Splash - Yoshi YATABE, Programming Director

We are honored to have this section to be the introduction for young talented filmmaker from Japan. It was the great example that "FORMA" the last year's awarded title went to various film festivals from this section. We are hoping to have some titles to be expand overseas like "FORMA."

≪New initiatives of the 27th TIFF≫

The Opening Night film is Two Days, One Night, which is directed by celebrated Belgian filmmakers the Dardenne brothers and is Belgium's official Oscar submission for 2014. The film stars Marion Cotillard as a working-class mother who loses her job, but who has a fighting chance - and one weekend - to get it back. "It's an amazing lineup we've put together this year," says Carl Spence, SIFF Artistic Director. "We're particularly thrilled to welcome Michel Hazanavicius and Bérénice Bejo - they first came to Seattle with OSS 117: Nest of Spies, which won the Golden Space Needle Award for Best Film at SIFF 2006. Also, Michel's Oscar-winning film The Artist was the first film shown at SIFF Cinema Uptown when it opened in 2012. I'm so glad the Seattle audience will have the chance to hear about their exceptionally successful partnership in cinema."

25th Dinard Festival - Trailer

Youngabout 2015 returns next March

Youngabout is an international Festival dedicated to an adolescent audience ages 13 to 20.

A true beehive of new ideas, a virtual trip around the world through very varied films and using many disciplines which unite visual arts, new technology, and television productions. The jury is made up of 50 students from high schools and Universities.

Next March 2015, the Youngabout will return with its showings of short and feature films, with social events and sharing, and with seminars.

This date is a haven, a safe port after a journey that began a few months before with educational meetings in schools or libraries to select the girls and boys wishing to take on the responsibilities of being part of the Jury of the festival or the organizational staff. From October to March eight lessons, held by cinema experts and an afternoon of games and activities on emotions, to take on the week of the festival with awareness and joy.

Youngabout is an open and welcoming space for anyone who loves quality films and also for those who wish, besides seeing the movies, to participate in round-table discussions or the events organized outside of the cinema.

Youngabout's  program has been made one step at a time, one tile after another, to make a complex puzzle, with a clear design, which gradually takes shape, taking on a unique physiognomy which reflects, time after time, the desires of its protagonists: out of indistinct materialize the dreams and the expectations of the invisibiles of our society, adolescents, those unknown strangers.

festival taking place in Bologna, Italy,  in March.

Antenna Documentary Film festival is proud to announce this year’s lineup of respected local and international guests, featuring award-winning filmmakers and industry experts including Vice President of Artist Programs at Tribeca Film Institute Ryan Harrington and Multi-Award winning Spanish director Ventura Durall.

Ryan Harrington is an esteemed and dynamic force in the documentary world, and has supported over 200 films in his tenure at the TFI. He provides over $2 million in grants to documentary, cross-platform and fiction storytellers, while developing filmmaker training labs and workshops worldwide. He has also managed the theatrical documentary arm of the A&E Television Networks, where he championed the films American Teen and My Kid Could Paint That and the Oscar-nominated Murderball and Jesus Camp.

He will feature at the festival as both, a member of the international competition jury and as part of the festival’s DocTalk event.

Multi-Award winning Spanish director Ventura Durall and emerging Spanish filmmaker Jordi Morato will attend the festival to screen their films, bringing fresh and unique insights to audiences.

Ventura Durall’s latest film Bugarach, which is Antenna’s 0pening Night film, was premiered in competition at the prestigious Vision Du Reel and Hot Docs Film Festival (2014). His previous films have premiered at IDFA, Dok-Leipzig and Sundance and won awards in more than 15 international film festivals. The Creator of the Jungle (“Sobre la marxa”) is the debut feature length film from Jordi Murató and has screened at Rotterdam, Hot Docs, BFI and Vision De Réel. His previous work includes the award-winning short film “Cami de terra”. Both filmmakers will participate in a Q&A session after the screening of their films.

Cutting-edge Filmmakers Sam Smail, Nick Watson and Nathan Penlington will also attend the festival, bringing with them for the first time in Australia their unique Choose Your Own Documentary as a not-to-be-missed program highlight. Described by The Independant as ”Deeply nostalgic and Dazzingly modern”, Choose Your Own Documentary follows Nathan Penlington and his team as they embark on an epic and emotional quest of obsession, friendship, loss and adventure. But there is a twist. The destiny is in the hands of the audience, who decide Nathan’s fate from over 1,500 paths and multiple endings via remote controls.

Sam Culter, the former band manger of the Rolling Stones will also attend this year’s festival and will hold a Q&A after the screening of the classic documentary, Gimme Shelter. The film covers the events of the 1969 American tour and Sam will be at the screening to tell the audience the true unfolding events before, during and after the notorious concert.

Antenna Festival showcases some of the very best in Australian Documentary. Judy Ryner, will attend the festival and hold a Q&A after the World Premiere of her film ‘I Will Not Be Silenced’, which charts the story of an Australian woman’s horrific gang rape and her heroic fight for justice in Kenya. Christopher Houghton, director of Sons & Mothers and Anne Tsoulis, director of the These Heathen Dreams, will also hold Q&A’s after the screenings of their films.

Antenna Festival will hold a tribute to renowned Australian filmmaker Pat Fiske, with a screening of her seminal documentary ‘Rocking The Foundations’ and will hold a special Q&A after the screening with key figures from the film.

Other international guests at Antenna, include Ingrid Kopp, Director of Digital Initiatives at Tribeca Film Institute and Jeffery Winter, Executive Director of The Film Collaborative. Both join Ryan Harrington and other leading industry figures at Antenna’s DocTalk - which provides an exclusive opportunity to gain juicy insiders’ secrets of the documentary world.

It is with sadness in heart and a lot of sorrow that we say farewell to you dear guests. The Reykjavik International film festival is over this year. We have screened over hundred movies from over 40 countries for the duration of eleven wonderful days. But don't worry, we will be back again.

The highlights this year included the visit of our guests of honour, directors Mike Leigh and Ruben Östlund, journalist and filmmaker, various panels on the theme of War and Peace, a film-concert featuring heavy-metal band Sólstafir to the movie of Icelandic director When The Raven Flies. And of course a variety of events all over town and screenings of incredible films spanning from documentaries and shorts to the contendants for our main prize, The Golden Puffin. We want to thank the wonderfully talented directors who attended and gave the public an insight into their art.

This years festival was marked by happiness and a great diversity  of movies. We also received a lot of good gestures from you, dear friends, and we will go over those suggestions to make a good festival even better.

The puffin will return one year from now. The next festival will be held between 24th September and 4th of October. We can´t wait to see you again.
