We hope our audience will be as inspired as we are. “

The 2014 Special Medallion award goes to Cineteca di Bologna and Gian Luca Farinelli for the significant role played in film restoration and preservation of film culture. Telluride Film Festival’s Education Programs present students the opportunity to experience film as an art and expand participants’ worldview through film screenings and filmmaker discussions. The Student Symposium provides 54 graduate and undergraduate college students a weekend-long immersion in cinema. The City Lights Project, now in its 15th year, brings 21 high school students and seven teachers from four divergent schools the opportunity to participate in a concentrated program of screenings and discussions. The Roger Ebert/TFF University Seminars give university professors and students the opportunity to travel to the Festival each year to participate in special programming and to attend screenings throughout the weekend.

Telluride Film Festival’s Talking Heads programs allow attendees to go behind the scenes with the Festival’s special guests. Six Conversations take place between Festival guests and the audience about cinema and culture, and three outdoor Noon Seminars feature a panel of Festival guests discussing a wide range of film topics. These programs are free and open to the public.

Jon Stewart made the packed audience laugh while he was in Telluride, Colorado this past Labor Day weekend (29 August to 1 September, 2014), as he was introducing his new film, ROSEWATER.

“I am just starting to adjust to the altitude, so I guess that means it is time for me to leave to go home now. What is the best thing for adjusting to high altitude? Water. So, most of you are hydrating and drinking a lot of water? And now I get to watch you squirm in your seats while you watch ROSEWATER, because you won’t be able to use the bathroom for the next two hours.”

The 41st Telluride Film Festival is hard to get to, but worth the trip, and showcases the most anticipated US premieres from first time filmmakers like Jon Stewart to veteran filmmakers including Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Bennett Miller. There were also several classic auteurs honored such as Orson Welles, his incomplete feature, made just three years before Citizen Kane, which was never shown publicly, THE MAGICIAN, a 2014 documentary about Orson Welles himself, Robert Altman, CALIFORNIA SPLIT, 1974, and Francis Ford Coppola, APOCALYPSE NOW, 1979,  A CLOSE-UP ON APOCALYPSE NOW and HEARTS OF DARKNESS, 1991. The festival has a low key, small, casual, and approachable style, without any fancy red carpets. At 8,750 feet, this gorgeous mountain town, with a history rich in mining, is set in a valley surrounded by mountain peaks. The sun shines in that Rocky Mountain High sort of way which places a halo around the person you are talking to. The screenings are held at approximately 12 venues all within walking distance in town, and if you ascend in the gondola 1,000 to 2,000 additional feet, to Mountain Village (a ski resort plaza with hotels, outdoors shops, and restaurants), there is another 500 seat theater, named after Chuck Jones. The gondola is very safe, is powered by solar energy, and offers 360 degree panoramic mountain views. It is breathtakingly gorgeous and offers the opportunity to meet others who share the same passion for film as yourself.

There are three airports that service the Telluride area; Telluride, Montrose, and Durango, and if you are unable to fly directly into Telluride (because soon it will be for private flights only), Tellurides.com offers transportation from Montrose or Durango. It may sound far to an East Coaster, but the hour and 20 minute ride from Montrose to Telluride is part of the vacation as you drive by ranches, 14,000 foot peaks, red rocks, and rivers with trout jumping from them. In other words, getting there is half the fun.

I saw 10 films in only four days, most of them brought me on an emotional catharsis.

Films included the following;

FOXCATCHER: the sports drama about two brothers, both Olympic gold medalists in wrestling, and an eccentric wealthy mentor.

WILD: based on the novel by Cheryl Strayed, about a recently divorced woman who reflects back on her past and her relationship with her mother and ex-husband as she hikes the Pacific Crest Trail.

THE HOMESMAN: Tommy Lee Jones as a claim jumper, who tries to help three troubled women make it across the prairie safely,

th

Many films received terrific buzz at the festival. There is already talk of Oscar contention for FoxcatcherBirdman, and Imitation Game.

Thanks for reading.

Stockholm Lifetime Achievement Award 2014 goes to director Mike Leigh

This year’s Stockholm Lifetime Achievement Award is granted one of Europe’s most exceptional directors, Mike Leigh. During an exclusive Face2Face seminar, following the premiere of his latest film Mr. Turner, Leigh will be presented the Bronze Horse, and meet the audience.

Justification: Every new Mike Leigh feature is an invitation to a glimpse into lives so fully formed and vivid with a cast of actors who portray not characters, but breathing, living people. This year's Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to a filmmaker who is comfortable humanizing master artists, abortionists and people who others would shy their gaze from. Mike Leigh is a true cinematic humanist, an exceptional director of actors and a master of improvisational filmmaking.

Brit Mike Leigh is one of the past decades’ greatest European directors. He debuted in 1971 with Bleak Moments, and he has since been awarded the Palme d’Or for Secrets and lies (1996), and the Venice Golden Lion for Vera Drake (2004).

Leigh will be visiting the festival together with Marion Bailey, who has a leading role in his latest film; Mr. Turner (2014). The film chronicles the last quarter century of the brilliant yet eccentric British painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851).

Mr. Turner was selected in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014 where it was hailed by critics and Timothy Spall was named best actor for his performance.

Synopsis

Profoundly affected by the death of his father, loved by a housekeeper he takes for granted and occasionally exploits sexually, he forms a close relationship with a seaside landlady with whom he eventually lives incognito in Chelsea, where he dies.

Throughout this, he travels, paints, stays with the country aristocracy, visits brothels, is a popular if anarchic member of the Royal Academy of Arts, has himself strapped to the mast of a ship so that he can paint a snowstorm, and is both celebrated and reviled by the public and by royalty.

J.M.W. Turner is portrayed by Timothy Spall, who has appeared in several of Leigh’s films. The cast also features Dorothy Atkinson as, Hannah Danby, and Marion Bailey as Sophia Booth.

Cast: Timothy Spall, Dorothy Atkinson, Marion Bailey, Paul Jesson, Lesley Manville, Martin Savage, Ruth Sheen.

Face2Face and premiere screening of Mr. Turner: November 8. Swedish Distributor: AB Svensk Filmindustri

Mr. Turner premieres in Swedish theatres December 25

The Stockholm Lifetime Achievement Award is presented annually to honor and acknowledge a longstanding career and an outstanding achievement in cinema. The prestigious award, in the shape of a 7,3kg (16 lb) Bronze Horse is the heaviest film award in the world. It is also a paraphrase on a national design icon, the Swedish Dala horse, and was created by artist Fredrik Swärd. The prize has previously been awarded to directors such as Jean-Luc Godard, Quentin Tarantino, David Cronenberg, David Lynch and Oliver Stone.

CAMERA JAPAN 2014 announces full selection

CAMERA JAPAN presents forty-three Japanese films accompanied by lectures, exhibitions, live performances, a Filmbrunch, the Kids' Day and Japanese delicacies.

CAMERA JAPAN takes place from Thursday 2 until Sunday 5 October in LantarenVenster, Rotterdam. In Amsterdam, the festival screens anime films from Monday 6 until Thursday 9 October in De Melkweg and part of the festival program from Friday 10 until Sunday 12 October in Kriterion. The full program will be online shortly on www.camerajapan.nl. (See title list below)

Festival Director Alex Oost states about this ninth edition: “CAMERA JAPAN has a smaller budget because private funds contributed less this year. Fortunately, the City of Rotterdam, Netherlands Film Fund and Rotterdam Festivals continue to support us. And we have a great team of volunteers for selecting films, organization, location styling and audience reception. It means that we now choose to show more films and less live performances. The very diverse contemporary Japanese cinema continues to surprise me with topical, intense, satirical and sometimes very exuberant comedies, tragedies, thrillers, action films, documentaries and anime. It is a pleasure to present this strong selection of 43 wonderful, recent works for CAMERA JAPAN 2014!”

Opening Film, thriller, mixed martial arts and comedy

Thursday 2 October, CAMERA JAPAN opens with Unforgiven by LEE Sang-il. This Japanese western, a remake of the Clint Eastwood classic and starring Ken WATANABE (Batman Begins, Inception), gets a second screening later during the festival. Nearly all selections are Dutch premieres, such as the thriller Forma, awarded by the international film critics in Berlin and the directorial debut of female filmmaker SAKAMOTO Ayumi; beautiful The Tale of Iya by young director TSUTA Tetsuichiro about life in a mountain village; the disturbing documentary Hybrid in which MATSUNAGA Daishi (who previously made Pyuupiru 2001-2008) portrays several mixed martial arts fighters and the charming comedy Fuku-chan of Fukufuku Flats by FUJITA Yosuke, who took the CAMERA JAPAN Audience Award in 2008 for his Fine, Totally Fine.

Pink film, sword fights and a local hero

The pink film & revenge thriller The Crazy Tune for Maria van IZUCHI Kishu gets its international premiere during CAMERA JAPAN. The female lead, actress MIZUI Maki, recently made her impressive directorial debut with Kept, also shown at the festival. Furthermore, the festival presents three European premieres: Short Hope by HORIGUCHI Masaki from the Jeonju film festival competition and a debut film as well; the endearing sword fighter film Uzumasa Limelight by OCHIAI Ken, recently awarded Best Film and Best Actor prizes at the Fantasia film festival in Montreal; and the documentary film Super Local Hero by TANAKA Toshinori portraying the owner of a small record shop who supports people evacuated from the Fukushima power plant area.

Anime: epic fight scenes, health care robot and short films

CAMERA JAPAN does not miss out on a sizeable portion of anime. Based on the eponymous video game, Bayonetta: Bloody Fate by KIZAKI Fuminori gloriously crosses borders with action, humor and epic fights. Roujin Z by KITAKUBO Hiroyuki, a classic from 1991, tells the weird and visionary story of a bed-shaped robot, designed to provide care for the elderly, running out of control. The four animated films compiled in Short Peace vary in style and excel with strong plots. The compilation Geidai Animation Best Selection reunites the ten strongest graduation works from the animation department of Geidai, the Tokyo University of Arts.

Theme: J-Dream

This edition, CAMERA JAPAN shines its light on all that is weird, wondrous and fantastic under the title J-Dream. The theme programme is a wide and wild selection of exploitation, action, horror, fantasy and science fiction. In short: all the good stuff Japanese cinema has to offer. J-Dream includes sixteen films such as the documentary Love Hotel by Phil Cox & TODA Hikaru about a unique and intimate aspect of Japanese society; the witty and extremely bloody Why Don't You Play in Hell? by SONO Sion, winner of the Midnight Madness audience award in Toronto; and The Apology King by MIZUTA Nobuo, one of the most talked about films in Japan recently, in which comedian ABE Sadao solves small and big problems as a specialist in the traditional act of apoligising.

Special live performances Cuushe and aus

Friday 3 October starting 21.30 hrs at LantarenVenster, CAMERA JAPAN presents a double-bill of live performances by Cuushe and aus, two of Japan's most impressive young artists. Tokyo-based Cuushe is the rising star of the Flau Records label. With her pop infused electronic music and mesmerising airy vocals she carries listeners to a beautiful dream world accompanied with stunning visuals. After his beautiful piano performance at CAMERA JAPAN in 2010, aus returns to Rotterdam. This time the Flau Records owner brings a more electronic set in which he combines delicate melodies with sounds from daily life.

Architecture, literature and visual arts

Next to sixteen festival films, J-Dream includes lectures and art exhibitions. Architecture historian and Japan specialist Dave van Eijnsbergen speaks about 'manga architecture'; Japanologist and literary translator Luk van Haute tells about fantasy elements within the Japanese literary tradition; urban planner Rob van der Bijl exhibits urban photography converted into manga inspired images. Artist KOINUMA Yoshiyuki presents newly created artwork inspired by games, biology, science fiction and Japanse comics.

CAMERA JAPAN is organised by about fifteen enthusiastic voluntary staff members. During the festival, additional volunteers welcome audiences and other festival guests. CAMERA JAPAN is supported by the City of Rotterdam, Netherlands Film Fund, Rotterdam Festivals, Fuji Film and many other business partners.

Says Doc’n Roll director Colm Forde;

I am very excited to present our festival and this line-up to London. It features many overlooked music documentary gems, which I can’t wait to support and share with our audience. We will expand the experience beyond the screenings and create a great social event at our festival hub.”

On Thurs 25th Doc’n Roll opens with the London premiere of A Band Called Death; the extraordinary and little known story of the world’s first black punk band, Death, formed by three brothers from Detroit in 1974. Then the African-American community was grooving to Earth, Wind & Fire, and there was no room for a black, garage band turning out loud, aggressive rock ‘n’ roll – a sound that has since been described by the New York Times as, “punk before punk was punk’ and by Jack White as “ahead of punk, and ahead of their time”. A Q&A will follow the screening of A Band Called Death with band members, Bobby and Dannis Hackney.

A Band Called Death

On Sunday 28th Doc’n Roll will close with Howard S Bergman and Susan Stahman’s A Life in the Death of Joe Meek which, through contributions from a cast of musicians including Jimmy Page, Alex Kapranos, Edwyn Collins and Mike Berry, offers a fascinating insight into the life of Britain’s first independent pop record producer. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Howard Berger, and Mike Berry whose first hit “A Tribute to Buddy Holly’ was produced by Meek in 1961 and chaired by author and Meek enthusiast Travis Elborough.

On Saturday 26th British filmmaker Karen Whitehead will screen the UK premiere of Her Aim Is True which tells the story of rock ‘n’ roll outsider, the wonderful photographer Jini Dellaccio, who recently passed away, aged 97. Dellaccio first found herself taking pictures of rock and pop stars in the 1960s - when she herself was in her 40s – and she is now described as the photographer who visualised punk before it had a name and embodied indie before it was cool. Whitehead, who interviewed Dellaccio for her film, will be at the screening for a Q&A session.

Another punk rock pioneer Grant Hart is the subject of Gorman Bechard’s Every Everything: the music, life & times of Grant Hart, an unfiltered, unrestrained look in to the former Hüsker Dü co-songwriter/singer/drummer’s world including his rocky family life, the formation and consequent break-up of his most well-known band and all of the musical projects that followed.

The Doc‘n Roll line-up also includes portraits of two great talents. Sophie Huber’s Harry Dean Stanton: Partly Fiction is a mesmerising, impressionistic portrait of the iconic actor which explores his enigmatic outlook on his life, his unexploited talents as a musician, and includes candid scenes with David Lynch, Wim Wenders, Sam Shepard, Kris Kristofferson and Debbie Harry.

William Hechter’s AKA Doc Pomus tells the story of Brooklyn-born Jerome Felder (1925-1991), who was paralysed with polio as a child. As a teenager he began performing as a blues singer under the stage name Doc Pomus. By the 1950’s he had become one of the most successful songwriters of the early rock and roll era, penning, “Save the Last Dance for Me,” “This Magic Moment,” “A Teenager in Love,” “Viva Las Vegas,” and dozens of other hits. Featuring interviews with Doc’s collaborators and friends, including Dr. John, Ben E. King, Joan Osborne, Shawn Colvin, Dion, Leiber and Stoller, and B.B. King plus passages from his private journals read by his close friend, Lou Reed.

Jeff Broadway’s Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton features interviews and footage from some of hip-hop’s finest, discussing the fiercely independent, avant-garde record label, Stones Throw Records. Home to innovative leftfield producers like Madlib and J Dilla, the Stones Throw story is laced with tragedy, yet the label owner's single-minded pursuit of the music he loves, ensures it continues as a vital force in the digital music era. The film features exclusive interviews with Kanye West, Snoop Dogg, Common, Questlove, Talib Kweli, Mike D (Beastie Boys), and many more.

Also screening are Danny Garcia’s Looking for Johnny, a new documentary on the life of the late New York Dolls and Heartbreakers guitarist Johnny Thunders. Garcia, spoke to the fifty people who were closest to the rocker, about his music, which inspired punk and glam-metal, and his hard lifestyle and explores Johnny's unique musical style, his personal battle with drugs and theories on his death in a New Orleans hotel in 1991 at age 38, and, last but not least The Punk Syndromeabout the Finnish punk band - Pertti Kurikka’s Name Day.

Tickets will be on sale via Hackney Picturehouse

London Premiere: A Band Called Death + Q&A with band members

(Dirs Mark Covino Jeff Howlett, 2012, 96 min)

Thurs 25th Sep 19:30, Screen 3 Hackney Picturehouse

In association with MusicFilmWeb

Detroit. 1974. Three young black brothers. Rock ’n’ roll. While the rest of the Motor City was besotted with soul and Motown, David Hackney and his younger brothers were inspired by The Who and Alice Cooper to become proto-punk band, Death. Despite predating The Ramones, Death’s music remained unheard for 35 years until it was rediscovered by a new generation of punk rockers. A Band Called Death tells this remarkable story and shows how the uncompromising pursuit of an artistic vision can finally be fulfilled—even after death.

UK Premiere: Her Aim Is True + Q&A with the Director

(Dir Karen Whitehead, 2013, 70 min)

Fri 26th Sep 18:45, Screen 3 Hackney Picturehouse

Before Leibovitz, there was Dellaccio. Her Aim Is True brings together musicians and rock photographers in an inspiring and unforgettable journey, revealing unlikely rock 'n' roll photographer, Jini Dellaccio who visualised punk before it had a name and embodied indie before it was cool. In 1964, a middle-aged Dellaccio began hanging out with raucous garage bands, such as The Sonics, in her backyard, shooting innovative album covers. Soon she was capturing unprecedented portraits of Neil Young and early performances by The Who, Rolling Stones, Mitch Ryder and Mamas & Papas. An anthem for individual creativity, the film celebrates a legacy lost and found, as it traces Dellaccio's ingenuity, spirit and style through participants, in a gritty music subculture that, like Jini, would set the bar for their descendants.

Ming City Rockers

Fri 26th Sep 23:15, Stage 3

Real-life rock ’n’ roll outsiders on a fast-track to obliteration, Ming City Rockers were the only kids in Immingham – a dock town near Hull and Grimsby, nicknamed “Ming” - that shared common interests in getting dolled up in tight blazers and ties and sitting around listening doo-wop, Stooges punk, Helen Shapiro, Magma and Connie Francis. The band has been making a name for itself with supporters including Richard Hawley’s manager Graham Wrench and Radio 1’s Huw Stephens. MCR will be playing material from their soon to be released self-titled debut album, alongside New York Dolls covers in honour of Johnny Thunders and the evening’s screening of Looking For Johnny.

Julien Temple Retrospective

LONDON: The Modern Babylon + Q&A with Julien Temple

(Dir Julien Temple 2012 125 min)

Sat 27th Sep 15:00, Screen 4 Hackney Picturehouse

Julien Temple draws on a century of music and film archive to tell the story of London’s epic journey through 100 years of cultural upheaval and reinvention. Among the line-up of familiar faces are David Bowie, Ray Davies, Bishi, Mick Jagger, Malcolm McLaren as well as the ordinary folks of London, from all walks of life. The extraordinary soundtrack spans 100 years of London music including iconic tracks from the Sex Pistols, The Clash, Small Faces, Lily Allen, Pink Floyd, Roxy Music, The Kinks, Madness, Bob Marley through to Tommy Trinder, Max Bygraves, Vera Lynn, Lonnie Donnegan, Murray Johnson and Robert Burns, plus many more

Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten

(Dir Julien Temple 2007 124 min) Showing in 35mm print

Sat 27th Sep 17:30, Screen 3 Hackney Picturehouse

Filmmaker Julien Temple takes a look beyond the guise of the late, anti-establishment icon Joe Strummer to offer a warm portrait of the self-described "mouthy little git" who was born John Mellor and was destined to become the frontman for one of the most influential punk bands ever. A complex figure who would learn to use his gift for music as a means of decompressing his conscience, Strummer is revealed here through unearthed interviews and the illuminating recollections of his closest companions. At times idealistic to a fault, the flawed Clash singer/songwriter had a special gift for compelling listeners to think as they moved to the music. Vintage performance footage and excerpts from Strummer's popular BBC radio program offer the ideal musical backdrop for an affectionate tribute to a punk-rock legend.

Oil City Confidential + Q&A with Julien Temple

(Dir Julien Temple 2009 104 min)

Screening 20:30 Saturday, 27th September

A film noir feature length documentary about Dr Feelgood; it's the story of four men in cheap suits who crashed out of Canvey Island in the early '70s, sandpapered the face of rock’n’roll and left all that came before a burnt-out ruin, four estuarine John-the-Baptists to Johnny Rotten’s anti-Christ. Cannibalising the visual flotsam and jetsam of our society, welding into an emotionally engaging and humorous whole, Oil City Confidential sets out to explore this unique time, place and social landscape - all of which was responsible for shaping the identity of the band and which, more than any other, defined the strange cultural vacuum which existed before the coming of punk rock.

(Dirs William Hechter, Peter Miller 2012 98 min)

Paralysed with polio as a child, Brooklyn-born Jerome Felder reinvented himself first as a blues singer, renaming himself Doc Pomus, then emerged as a one of the most brilliant songwriters of the early rock and roll era, writing “Save the Last Dance for Me,” “This Magic Moment,” “A Teenager in Love,” “Viva Las Vegas,” and dozens of other hits. A.K.A. DOC POMUS brings to life Doc’s joyous, romantic, heartbreaking, and extraordinarily eventful journey. In his later years, Doc was a mentor to generations of younger songwriters, and a fierce advocate for downtrodden rhythm and blues musicians. He wrote a thousand songs –including some of the most recorded songs in the history of popular music – but his most lasting gift may have been his uniquely generous spirit. Packed with incomparable music and rare archival imagery, AKA Doc Pomus features interviews with Doc’s collaborators and friends, including Dr. John, Ben E. King, Joan Osborne, Shawn Colvin, Dion, Leiber and Stoller, and B.B. King. Passages from Doc’s private journals are read by his close friend, Lou Reed. Doc Pomus’ gripping life story makes for a powerful and lively film that introduces this unique American character to a new, much wider circle of admirers.

Exclusive London Screening: Our Vinyl Weighs A Ton

(Dir Jeff Broadway 2013 94 min)

Sun 28th Sep 17:30, Screen 3 Hackney Picturehouse

The alternative punk story of a fiercely independent, avant-garde record label, offers an exclusive look into the label's left-of-centre artists, history, culture and global following. Stones Throw Records was born with a love for hip-hop, but is inspired by music in all its diversity.

RIFF | INNOVATION – NETWORKING – DIALOGUE
The aim of Reykjavik International Film Festival is to become one the foremost film festivals in Europe, placing continued emphasis on presenting not only progressive, independent cinema and a wide range of documentaries touching on explosive subjects, but also a young and unusual Capital in a country bursting with energy and creativity. The geographic location makes RIFF a naturally ideal meeting point for filmmakers from either side of the Atlantic Ocean. “We want to see you in Reykjavík!”

Innovation The festival’s Grand Prix category, entitled New Visions, is limited to first and second works only. RIFF has thus carved a significant niche for itself among film festivals in terms of presenting and promoting new talent. Each edition, RIFF has also developed a program called Minus25, where the focus is on filmmakers and film enthusiasts under 25 years of age. The program consists of a Stop-motion Workshop for pre-school children, Short Film Workshop for children of Grade School age and from fall 2011 a Short Film Workshop for high-school children will also be organized. The goal of the Minus25 program is to activate the imagination and creativity of the younger generations, and engage the cinema litteracy of children in Iceland who have long been exposed to a rather monotonous cinema culture.

Networking is an important part of the festival’s activities, between young filmmakers and those with experience; between Icelandic (Nordic) cinema and international cinema; and between filmmakers and international studies of film and culture. RIFF also manages a market for films where new Icelandic film productions are presented to international industry professionals such as buyers and distributors. Location scouting is also provided during the festival and several collaborations have materialized from such meetings between Icelandic and foreign professionals.

Dialogue has from the beginning been a basic theme in each edition of RIFF. The festival has always seen it as a duty to initiate a dialogue with the community and about it, between filmmakers and festival guests, between different cultural worlds, between different artforms, between film studies and filmmakers etc. The festival has always emphasized the screenings of documentaries, especially those that revolve around environmental themes and human rights. RIFF organizes panel talks, lectures and debates about various subjects concerning our society, culture and other contemporary affairs. We believe that by this means a valuable connection is forged with the community and knowledge is both absorbed and distributed; RIFF, in it’s own way, is a knowledge generation hub.

Boston Jewish Film Festival Announces Opening, Closing, and Mid-Fest Films

The 26th annual Boston Jewish Film Festival (BJFF), November 5-17, announces its Opening and Closing nights and Mid-Fest Films.

The 26th Festival opens on November 5 with Run Boy Run, a fiction film directed by acclaimed German filmmaker Pepe Danquart.  This is a Jewish hero’s tale, a miraculous true-to-life story of Srulik, a 9-year-old boy who flees from the Warsaw ghetto in 1942.  He survives among the animals in the woods, eludes SS patrols, and charms locals into taking him in, while keeping alive his Jewish faith through the terrible war against his people.  The Toronto Jewish Film Festival adds, “A superlative saga of courage and compassion with a powerhouse conclusion.”  In person: screenwriter Heinrich Hadding.

The BJFF Mid-Fest event on November 12 takes a jovial look at the world of delicatessens with the World Premiere of Deli Man, a documentary directed by Erik Greenberg Anjou ( The Klezmatics: On Holy Ground).  Laugh your way through hilarious stories of American delicatessens while drooling over the wonderful Jewish food being prepared before your eyes.  From New York to Chicago to San Francisco and even to Texas, enjoy the oddball company of the obsessed deli proprietors behind the corned beef, the kreplach, and the magnificent matzo ball soup.  You won’t want to miss third-generation Houston deli owner Ziggy Gruber, the maven of all deli mavens!  In person:  Director Erik Greenberg Anjou and film subject Ziggy Gruber.

My Own Man, directed by David Sampliner, closes the Boston portion of the 26th Festival on November 16.   This humorous and thought-provoking documentary asks: What does it mean to be a man?  As he turns 40, David, the filmmaker, who has never felt sufficiently masculine, explores this question through witty attempts at “macho” activities.  His foil -- his surgeon father, a 1950’s-style male, a “Jewish John Wayne” -- has never questioned traditional gender roles.  Can there be a rapprochement between them, especially with David’s wife about to deliver a baby boy? Includes an interview with actor/producer Edward Norton.  An person: Director David Sampliner and film subject James Sampliner.

“We are beginning our next quarter century of the Festival with a fresh, forward-looking bang,” says Amy Geller, Artistic Director at BJFF.  “I am excited to give our enthusiastic film-goers the first glimpse of the thought-provoking, profound, humorous, and poignant line-up we have in store for this year’s Festival.  We have 39 powerhouse films, including several fun, edgy programs curated specifically for and by young adults (20’s-40’s) in our FRESHFLIX picks.  There is something for everyone!”

The full film schedule and tickets will be available at www.bjff.org beginning Monday, September 22.

The Boston Jewish Film Festival, a not-for-profit arts organization, celebrates the richness of the Jewish experience through film and media. Throughout the year, the Festival engages and inspires the community to explore the full spectrum of Jewish life and culture.
