Nazir Husain Keshvani and Hare Rama Hare Krishna

In the Media room at CommunicAsia-BroadcastAsia, I noticed an Indian looking man, apparently in his late 30s-early 40s, bespectacled like me, offering a gentle smile. We soon got introduced to each other. He has the odd name of Nazir Husain Keshvani and prefers to be called Naz, which might be stylish and short. Nazir Husain is a name that is common in India and Pakistan, and we had a popular character actor-cum producer-director of Bhojpuri dialect films, called Nazir Husain in India. Keshvani is a surname that you will find among many Indians, but one would readily associate it with the Sindhi or Kutchhi communities because of the last three letters: a..n..i. A majority of Sindhi’s and a large number of Kutchhis have surnames that end in ani. Nazir is an Ismaili Khoja Muslim, a follower of the Aga Khan. Naz means pride, while Nazir means ‘comparable’ or ‘in the vein of’. Nazir’s father migrated to Singapore from India in 1950, as a teenager, to work with the famous Jumabhoy family of Singapore that developed some landmark areas of the young country.

Family patriarch Rajabali Jumabhoy left India in 1915, to start a commodity trading business in Singapore. In the 50s, they invited workers from India, mainly from their own Khoja Isna Ashari (Shia) community, but also from other faiths, to join their projects. Over the years, the family diversified into multiple businesses, including ship-building, real estate, retail and hospitality, creating assets in Southeast Asia, Australia and the UK. Babubhai Jivabhai Keshvani left the Jumabhoys to join a film distribution company that released Hindi films in the Malaysia/Singapore of the 50s, 60s and 70s. Owned a group of Parsees from India that included the legendary film-makers, the Wadias, 84 year-old Keshvani has many tales to recount, including how he released Dev Anand’s drugs/hippies drama, Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971-72) in Johor Bahru (across the sea-link from Singapore, in Malaysia) because it was banned in Singapore. Many Singaporeans went across especially to watch the film and went gaga over it. Dev Anand recalled the incident vividly when he met Nazir in 2008.

Nazir speaks very little Gujarati (parent state language of the Kutchhi dialect) or Urdu or Hindi (the other two widely spoken Indian languages, close to Gujarati). He says he grew-up in the cinema halls of Singapore. Currently, he works in the publishing industry as a freelance writer/editor. His passion has always been film-making and he learnt the ropes by participating in various film projects. Nazir’s film credits include co-directing Ragged (1993) and Hurt Instinct (1994). Both films won the Special Jury Prize at the Singapore International Film Festival (SIFF). He has occasionally collaborated with his brother, Nisar. He went on to direct various documentaries and the “Holidays in Hell” travelogue, which premiered at the 14th SIFF. Nazir took me a special screening of the impressive Saudi Arabian film, Wadjda, organised by Open, Participate, Enrich, Negotiate (O.P.E.N.), the public engagement initiative of the Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA).

O.P.E.N. is a prelude to SIFA, four weeks before the opening of the Festival, a curated selection of events in a casual and intimate setting, leading to SIFA, in August and September 2014. Ong Keng Sen is the Festival Director of O.P.E.N.

Here I also met Teo Swee Leng. Swee Leng and Philip Cheah were the pillars of SIFF that I attended in some years ago. Nowadays, Swee Leng is Acquisitions Manager at Asia Pacific Films.co. Philip is there too, and so is Aruna Vasudev of India. Both are Curators.

At the show, I met a young lady related to Nazir, 20 year-old Saher Hashmi, who is half Pakistani (father), half Arab, and full of gusto and joie de vivre. She was one of the volunteers on duty. During a brief chat, I discovered that she had studied Urdu in Singapore, and spoke the language reasonably well. Pleasantly surprised, I asked, “How come?” and she replied that school students in Singapore could choose to learn a language other than the usual Tamil, and she chose Urdu. I should have known that this was the very school where I taught basic Urdu for two terms during 1997-98, after my one-year stint at ESPN Sports TV. Farah Anwar, who was the co-ordinator, in my time, has recently retired, Saher told me. The school had almost all-female teaching staff, predominantly from Pakistan, and I was an exception.

AsiaPacificFilms.com streams culturally and historically significant films from Asia and the Pacific. Their curators and AsiaPacificFilms.com’s President Jeannette Hereniko are members of the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC), a well-respected international organisation. Every year, NETPAC awards prizes at major international film festivals. By acquiring digital rights and streaming their film collection, AsiaPacific films.com gives subscribers access to half of the world’s films: films made by Asians and Pacific Islanders. They stress that 95 percent of these films are never seen outside of their own countries, because mainstream distributors don’t bring them to the global market, or film-makers from these areas lack access to distribution channels.

Philip Cheah is a film critic and is the editor of BigO, Singapore's only independent pop culture publication. He is Honorary Secretary of  NETPAC. He is also on the selection committee of the Locarno International Film Festival and Founding Member of SIFF.

Swee Leng has been an arts, film, and new media administrator for major international organisations for the last 26 years. She was co- festival director of SIFF for 20 years, and was instrumental in making the Festival a recognised and highly regarded international film festival, for its progressive programming and promotion of Asian cinema. Currently, she is a consultant with the Moving Image Gallery at the Singapore Art Museum and is responsible for organising the annual Southeast Asia Film Festival. She is a member of NETPAC.

Aruna Vasudev is an author, critic, editor, and former festival director with a Ph.D. in cinema from the University of Paris. She is the author of two books on Indian cinema: Liberty & License in the Indian Cinema and The New Wave in Indian Cinema.  She is the Founder-President of NETPAC; Founder-Editor of Cinemaya, The Asian Film Quarterly (1988-2006); and Founder-Director of Cinefan, the Festival of Asian Cinema (1999-2004). She has been a jury member of more than forty international film festivals. Among other honours, Vasudev was conferred France’s top cultural award, the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres; the Satyajit Ray Memorial award for promoting Asian film culture; and the Star of Italian Solidarity. (I am flattered to learn that the last honour, also called OSSI, which is short for Ordine di Stella di Solidarièta d’Italia, is something that I share with Aruna).

This seventh instalment ends my CommunicAsia-BroadcastAsia, June 2014, diary.

Hope you enjoyed a personal recollection of that eventful week in Singapore that I shared with you over the last one month.

The Festival will conclude on the Piazza Grande with the prize-giving ceremony on Saturday August 16 at 21:00.

The full program is available on the official website Pardo Live (www.pardo.ch), where, in addition to news, trailers and other exclusive content, there will also be live-streaming of all the Piazza Grande presentations and conversations with guests of honor.

New Pilot Project: the Locarno Industry Academy

The Industry Office has joined forces with the Locarno Summer Academy to launch the pilot project Industry Academy (8 – 12 August), an educational, multi-disciplinary program for young industry professionals.

The Industry Academy will be a place where a group of nine young European professionals starting out in the areas of distribution, exhibition, sales and marketing, will meet with seasoned industry professionals. They come from six different countries: Belgium (Damien Le Délézir, Europa International; Vanessa Jarlot, O’Brother), Denmark (Peter Ahlén, Trust Nordisk), France (Océane Portal, Under The Milky Way), Spain (Espinar Gabriel Sanz, The Film Agency), Switzerland (Meryl Moser, Cinerive SA; Frédérick Herren, Cinepel SA; Yves Blösche, Filmcoopi) and UK (Oliver Charles, Peccadillo Pictures).

This initiative intends to fill an existing gap (very few European film schools have an industry section or even dedicate significant modules to this sector of the film industry) and be a very practical shortcut to the industry world with a strong international dimension.

Mentors and participants will talk about their respective professions and the challenges and changes they face, discuss concrete case studies, confront their points of views on specific issues and explore together new, innovative approaches in terms of sales, exhibition, distribution (including new platforms) and marketing strategies.

Confirmed guests include Susan Wendt (Trust Nordisk), Nicholas Kaiser (Memento Films International), Anne Delseth (Directors' Fortnight), Lane Kneedler (AFI Fest), Michel de Schaetzen (O’Brother), Pierre-Alexandre Labelle (Under the Milky Way), Yves Moser (Cinerive SA), Mary Nazari (Pioner Cinema).

The 3-day intensive workshop will include synergies with the main activities of the Industry Days such as Step In, the Carte Blanche, its industry screenings, networking Happy Hours as well as with the Open Doors Coproduction Lab and the Filmmakers Academy.

I sincerely hope this project will be inspiring to these junior professionals, make them realize the important role they play in the career of films and filmmakers and encourage them to join forces and become creative entrepreneurs because their professions have never been so fascinating, open to innovation and new opportunities than today, lucky them!” says Sophie Bourdon, Locarno Industry Consultant at the origin of this initiative.

Marion Klotz, longtime Festivals Manager and Acquisitions Executive at Memento Films International, and since July of this year freelance consultant, will be the Coordinator of the program and the Tutor of the group.
We hope the industry academy will be a mini-lab giving prominence to exchanges and small group discussions rather than an academical teaching session. We want to nurture our discussions about the future of distribution and sales by ideas, thoughts and experiences of both beginners and experts!” says Marion Klotz.

This Pilot Project has been designed in close cooperation with Europa Cinemas, Europa Distribution and Europa International.

Castellitto’s talent was noticed by foreign directors as well and  he appeared in such films as Luc Besson’s The Big Blue, Jacques Rivette’s Who Knows, Sandra Nettlebeck’s Mostly Martha, and Andrew Adamson’s The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. He made his directorial debut in 1999 with Libero Burro and confirmed his filmmaking talent, especially, in the critical and commercial hit Don’t Move (2004), starring Penelope Cruz from a story by his wife Margaret Mazzantini. He has since followed with two more films which he wrote, directed and starred in, Love & Slaps (2010) and Twice Born (2012).

Andréanne Bournival

In her career in program management of several television channels – Télé-Québec (acquisitions and co-productions), Radio-Canada, TV5 and Canal D – then at the French program of the National Film Board of Canada, Andréanne Bournival has always looked to maintain significant presence of the cinema, both from here and abroad, on the small screen. At Radio-Canada, for seven years she maintained the cinema magazine, À première vue, with Chantal Jolis and René Homier-Roy, with a special daily edition during the Montreal World Film Festival. Andréanne Bournival was President of the Quebec section of Academy of Cinema and Television. For her, the MWFF is a passport to the world, a reflection on the great and the small history of humanity, a way to live life intensely through the power of dreams, a connection to the sensitivity and creativity of filmmakers. She is representing the Festival’s public on this year’s Jury.

Fridrik Thor Fridriksson

Fridrik Thor Fridriksson began his filmmaking carrier in the early 1980s. In 1987, he founded The Icelandic Film Corporation, which has become Iceland's most important production company, producing Fridriksson’s films as well as working with other Icelandic directors and producers. As a director, Fridriksson gained international recognition and critical acclaim with his second feature, Children of Nature, which won best artistic contribution in the 1991 MWFF before being nominated for an Oscar as Best Foreign Language Film. Co-writing with two of Iceland's most acclaimed novelists and scriptwriters Einar Már Gudmundsson and Einar Kárason, Fridriksson has been acclaimed for the strong visual style of his films and his gift for stunning images.

Ana Torrent began her career as a child in what some consider to be the greatest of Spanish films, Victor Erice’s Spirit of the Beehive (1973) and she quickly confirmed her precocious talent in Carlos Saura’s masterful Cria Cuervos (1976) and Elisa vida mia (1976). She has since worked with many other Spanish directors, including Jaime Armiñan, Julio Medem, Helena Tabema and Alejandro Amenábar, whose Tesis garnered Torrent a Goya nomination and best actress notices at several festivals. Her role in Jaime de Armiñan’s El Nido (1980) earned her best actress at the MWFF. Torrent’s talent has attracted the interest of many foreign directors, including Klaus Kirschner (Misa en Si Minor), Gilo Pontecorvo (El Tunel), Peter Greenaway (The Tulse Lupper Suitcases I, II and III), Roland Joffé (There Be Dragons) and Justin Chadwick (The Other Boleyn Girl). All ready for the III edition of Swiss Mountain Film Festival!
After the success of first two editions, the International Mountain Documentary Festival, will take place again from 11th to 17th of August 2014 in Pontresina. An important novelty for a mountain country like Switzerland, stage of some of the most amazing alpine sceneries of the world, but where there hasn't been a cinematographic festival completely dedicated to the mountain so far. The awareness of this lack led to the birth of the 'Swiss Mountain Film Festival', in order to celebrate the majesty of the mountain in all its possible declinations. In addiction to that also a Photographic Contest dedicated to the mountain as well.

And for the Festival an exceptional location: Pontresina, the a pearl in the heart of Oberengadin, framed by imposing massives (the Bernina massif among others) and only a few steps short way away from St.Moritz and its beautiful lakes.'Swiss Mountain Film Festival' is the result of an Italo-Swiss collaboration between the association Festival Internazionale del Cinema and the community of Pontresina.

Insight Film Festival launches Curation Scheme for films about faith

$

0

The Insight Film Festival's Curation Scheme provides new opportunities for filmmakers’ work to be screened.

Insight puts out a ‘call for entries’ once a new Festival is to be launched and appropriate awards have been negotiated and agreed with partners and sponsors.

However we are continually receiving films from filmmakers who relate to our theme of ‘faith’ even when no Festival is advertised. Filmmakers are, understandably keen for their films to be seen – and we share their enthusiasm.

The intention of the Insight Festival is to encourage filmmakers to consider faith as an important topic in filmmaking. We encourage those from all faith backgrounds and none to explore this key area of life.

Over the years since we began, we have become connected with a large number of interested parties around the world, such as film production companies, film festivals, conferences and academic institutions. These organisations are increasingly asking to recommend or ‘pass on’ films for their screenings.

So we have begun our Festival Curation Scheme. We want this to enhance our own screenings whilst helping filmmakers to receive screenings on a wider, global basis. Please read and follow the Rules of the Scheme to find out how to get involved and learn the practicalities involved.

Filmmakers can use our online entry form to their films. We look forward to receiving some great films for the Curation Scheme

New York: Asian American International Film Festival 2014

Presented by New York’s Asian Cinevision, The Asian American International Film Festival (AAIFF) had its 37th edition from July 24 – August 2. There are now 22 Asian film festivals in the United States programming films for the communities they serve. The strong link to community based partners is also one of the defining marks of AAIFF and the program lists one or more partners for each selected film. What is also striking is the festival events designed to involve the audience.  The COTABATO SESSIONS featured a documentary by Joel Quizon on an indigenous Philippine rhythmic ensemble music form (kulintang) followed by a music and dance session.  A stop-motion animation workshop was held on three occasions during the festival by Hui-Ching Tseng and associates for local teenagers to demonstrate a sustainable art creation model.  The brief videos produced were shown at the end of the festival with a retrospective of Hui-Chin Tseng’s work.  The other events included a panel on Asian American Women Media Makers,  a screen play competition, the 10th anniversary film lab  giving 72 hours to contestants to produce a 5-minute  film  themed  “The Color of my Hair”,  and  Howard Weinberg’s work-in-progress documentary on Nam June Paik  and  the Television Lab of  New York’s PBS station 13/WNET.

The community involvement of the festival was linked to the theme of engagement under which many of the productions shown can be subsumed. This theme did not guide the selection but emerged after hundreds of productions were reviewed for the fest. There seemed to be no principal interest in commercial distribution of the films. However, Asian Cine Vision will prepare again a package of films made available to communities and other non-theatrical viewing venues.

Films and features were produced by Asian-Americans and film makers from Asian countries. The program included films from the Philippines, a special focus of this year’s AAIFF, Vietnam, Taiwan, China, Japan, Australia, Afghanistan, India, and several feature co-productions involving the UK, USA, Hong Kong, and Italy.  Most of the productions, including shorts, were directed by Asian-American film makers from the US.

AAIFF selected 18 feature length films and documentaries and had six program sections with 33 shorts of diverse styles and genres. They covered Iranian shorts films, the culture and impact of the clothing industry under the We Are What We Wear motto, Happily Obsessed individuals, the discontent of industrial laborers and farm workers, and a special program of differently formatted films for children made by filmmakers less than 21 years old. A separate short program, Letters from the South, was devoted to the Southeast Asian experience of diaspora Chinese with films from China, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and Myanmar. The primary venue for the screening was the City Cinema Village East multiplex with secondary venues at IFP’s Made in NY Media Center, Museum of China in America, Mandarin Ink, the Asian American Research Institute of City University of New York, and the Asia Society where the Opening Presentation took place.

Engagement and the appeal to action are characteristics for many of program selections. SOLD by Jeffrey D. Brown opened the festival sponsored by the Asia society, partnered with 8 community organizations. Following the fate of a thirteen year old girl from Nepal who is trafficked to a Kolkata brothel the film is an outstanding portrait of the child sex trade and of the cultural and the social obstacles preventing an effective solution of the problem. Most child prostitutes in India have been lured from Nepal, and Nepalese and Indian authorities respond passively. Police corruption keeps the brothels open and if the children are liberated parents refuse in most cases to accept them again.  It is estimated that more than 100 million children have been trafficked for forced labor and sex. The Philippine director Hannah Espia tells an equally touching story in her feature TRANSIT focusing on the deportations from Israel of young children born to foreign workers. It depicts the threat to Philippine immigrants of losing their children even though the adults may have work permits. Mostly employed as care givers they are part of the most vulnerable segment of the labor force and some have hidden their children ever since Israel adopted the enabling legislation in 2009. Reports indicate that Israel does not completely enforce the law, yet the threat remains. TRANSIT nonetheless depicts a condition which is similar to other countries which depend on semiskilled cheap labor. The migrants have limited rights, suffer from discrimination and are subject to political vagaries, economic upheavals and xenophobic outbursts. In the Taiwanese THE RICE BOMBER by Cho Li the audience is confronted with the impact of the World Trade Organization’s rules once a country has joined it and the drastic consequences for sectors of the local economy. After Taiwan became a member of the WTO, imported rice destroyed the indigenous rice agriculture. Combined with land speculation and corruption, rice farmers became superfluous.  In The Rice Bomber, Yang Rumen’s story is effectively retold as it transpired from his autobiography.  A descendent of rice farmers, Ru openly opposes the government and resorts eventually to planting rice bombs to get the attention of governmental agencies. He surrenders to the police, is condemned to jail, pardoned and promotes now new organic farming. Though the insertion of archival material hampers the flow of the story, The Rice Bomber succeeds because of superb cinematography and acting. It also adds to the reflection about the WTO with its contradictory and frequently negative impact. In Ru’s words, he has been “searching for a crack in the ground where ideals could blossom”.

That something can and should be done is also the message of Steven de Castro’s documentary FRED HO’S LAST YEAR.  The life and actions of this acclaimed Chinese American jazz musician convey a strong message of artistic innovation, resilience, and de-mystification of the powers constraining us. For Fred Ho it is always necessary to engage in creative opposition to the establishment and generate our own solutions.  Throughout his long standing battle with cancer he rarely ceased being active and continued to embrace issues and causes.  In the documentary BRINGING TIBET HOME, Tenzin Tsetan records Tenzing Rigdol’s successful attempt to smuggle 20,000 kilos of soil from Tibet to Dharamsala, India with its large community of Tibetan refugees.  Rigdol’s installation ‘Our Land, Our People’ invited in a powerful and touching ceremony young and old Tibetans to touch the spoil of their land of origin. At the end no soil was left.

The 2014 AAIFF program also offered compelling documentaries and attractive feature films. Dean Hammer and Joe Wilson developed in KUMU HINA, the portrait of a public teacher who tries to preserve and instruct, through her example and traditional Hawaiian dance and song ceremonies, the tradition of ‘mahu’ a transgendered identity. Mahu incorporates both male and female characteristics and reflects an island custom that that was suspended through Western education.

The UK Japan co-production THE LOVE HOTEL by Philip Cox and Hikaru Toda depicts a unique and anonymous space where individuals from all walks of life can explore their sexual desires during short stays. Through the director’s impeccable and sensitive exploration the audience shares the backstage of Japanese public life and learns without prejudice about the Hotel’s clients and their intimate erotic pursuits. Because Japanese society is becoming more conservative and authoritarian, politicians enacting repressive rules curtail and now close the hotels. Thus this film, the first on this subject ever made, is a poignant document.

Christine Choy, one of the most prominent Asian American independent film makers directed GHINA. It covers the current presence of China in Ghana, as seen through personal observations of the Chinese working there and the reaction of Ghanaian workers to the Chinese employing them. In 2010 Ghana signed multibillion dollar investment agreements with China covering mostly the energy and infrastructure sectors. By early 2013 there were close to half a billion dollars of direct Chinese investments. The Chinese experience in Ghana serves as an indicator of the Chinese impact on other African countries. Some of the experts interviewed in Ghina certainly raise the issue of a new form of colonialism which China may represent. On the other side the interviews with Chinese having set up small businesses and local workers reveal mutual distrust and stereotyping. Yet the larger context is not covered and the documentary remains somehow episodic, though the personal experiences provide telling insights.

Some well executed and entertaining features like CHU AND BLOSSOM (Charles Chu, Gavin Kelly) and PRETTY ROSEBUD (Oscar Torre) proved appealing.  HOW TO FIGHT IN SIX INCHES by Ham Tran from Vietnam gained most kudos. This feature revolves around a fashion designer Anne from New York following her finance Kiet to Vietnam because she suspects him of having an affair with a model. She becomes part of the local fashion industry and turns into a supermodel while pursuing her investigation. The film has fast and passionate comedic actions set in the high fashion industry of metropolitan Ho Chi Minh City with a coterie of attractive models and glitterati. They readily convey the rise of a comfortable middle class and the dominance of the consumer culture. Probably recognizing themselves and their desires the Vietnamese audience loved the film. It became a high grossing box office hit in Vietnam witch is also a tribute to the actress and reigning star Kathy Uyen.

Overall the Asian American International Film Festival met its objectives and was well received by a loyal audience in sold out performances. Its community and engagement approach is unique and certainly successful.

Bridging the Dragon to Locarno

A group of European and Chinese producers have joined forces to create a new professional organisation called Bridging Visions whose aim is to contribute filling the gap between these two film worlds. The programme Bridging the Dragon, which will be launched in 2015, intends to guide and help professionals contentwise and businesswise, all year long, in order to better position their films and companies on each other's market. The vital element is to start developing a network of pro-active film professionals, from both Europe and China, who have taken the strategic decision to build long lasting collaborations with the targeted film industry and market.

The Festival del film Locarno is the very first European festival to believe in this new initiative; it has thus become the main festival partner of the programme for 2015 and it will host a development workshop (for a limited number of projects bridging China and Europe), during the 68th edition in August. The workshop will also be linked to the Industry Days in order to benefit from the professionals attending and develop synergies with the Industry Office.
