Then there are many other special programs, interesting talks and exhibitions, a film concert and parties.

FIRST TIME FEST is back for the second time in New York
FIRST TIME FEST
The Second Time Around
April 3-7, 2014
CELEBRATING FIRST-TIME FILMMAKERS
WITH A GRAND PRIZE OF THEATRICAL DISTRIBUTION
Following last year’s acclaimed first edition, FIRST TIME FEST is back, and it shows that the secondtime is even better. The Second Time Around for FIRST TIME FEST is set for April 3 – 7, 2014, and it will be based at their new home. NeueHouse (110 East 25th St.). NeueHouse will be the location for panels, workshops, selected film presentations, parties and the filmmaker lounge. Most screenings, including all the competition films, will take place at the AMC Loews Village 7 (11th St. & Third Ave.)
FIRST TIME FEST is a unique film festival celebrating first-time feature filmmakers. Aimed at discovering and providing exposure for the next generation of great filmmakers from around the world, FTF is a five-day event with a competition section showcasing new and exciting debut films, and a series of screenings and discussions with now-prominent filmmakers presenting their first films and then mentoring the first-timers.
Martin Scorsese, who presented Darren Aronofsky with the first John Huston Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinema last year, stated, “This venture is very very important to encourage young filmmakers.”
FTF will present ten Competition Films, which will be judged by a panel of industry luminaries and the FTF audience. All of the films in competition at FTF are the very first feature of the writer, director, producer, editor, cinematographer or composer of each film. All competition screenings will be followed by “Hot-Seat” discussions between the jury and filmmakers, and all audience members will vote on the films as well. Together, the jury and audience will ultimately select the Grand Prize winner, which is offered theatrical distribution and international sales representation from the renowned American film distributor, Cinema Libre Studio. And with FTF’s new relationship with Scandinavian Locations - the consortium of Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish and Danish film commissioners - the winning filmmaker will also receive a trip to Norway and Sweden to spend a week at a writer’s cottage in Northern Sweden to work on their next project. Scandinavian Locations will also be hosting our Filmmaker Kick-Off event on April 2 at NeueHouse.
FIRST TIME FEST’s retrospective series is called First Exposure and showcases the auspicious and ambitious debuts by artists who went on to become major filmmakers, with personal appearances by the filmmakers This year, our First Exposure series features: our Opening Night director Jennie Livingston presenting Paris is Burning,Albert Maysles (Salesman), Julie Taymor (Titus), Michael Moore (Roger & Me), Kelly Reichardt (River of Grass), Cinematographer Frederick Elmes (Eraserhead), James Toback (Fingers), and Peter Bogdanovich (Targets). This year’s First Exposure program kicked-off on February 24th with an out-of-fest screening of Robert De Niro’s directorial debut, A Bronx Tale, followed by a conversation with Mr. De Niro and FTF Director of Programming David Schwartz.
Our Stand Alone series will feature incredible conversations with Peter Bogdanovich, and Michael Moore.
Between films, we will be hosting an array of Industry Panels with notable producers, financiers, agents, composers, critics and other members of the entertainment industry. Panels at FTF are intimate gatherings between attendees and special guests where questions are encouraged and discussion is lively. Among the panels are “What’s Up, Doc;” “Help Me Help You;” “Show Me the Money;” “We Need a Bigger Boat– producing Independent Cinema;” “The Critical Eye;” “From Rock to Score” presented by the Grammys; and “Sell Baby Sell.”
A special panel, Women in Entertainment and Media, sponsored by the by the Royal Bank of Canada Wealth Management Group, will include Brooke Shields, Daphne Rubin-Vega and Carol Alt.
This year’s Competition Films boast a diverse and exciting lineup of directorial debuts, with ten accomplished and exciting fiction and documentary feature films from Germany, Israel, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden and the United States. Some have played to acclaim at international film festivals, some are premieres. Submissions were open to feature-length films made with first-time directors, producers, writers, cinematographers, editors or composers. There is tremendous talent on display in these debut works, and the promise of many great films to come.

No festival happens on its own and we’d like to thank our sponsors and collaborators:
NeueHouse - A workspace, a social space and mind space. It is built on a set of ideas that inspire creativity, collaboration and commerce. We believe that where we work, determines how we work. Where we spend our days should be beautiful as well as highly productive. We believe that an environment can be high-tech, but also warm and hospitable. We believe that work life and social life can coalesce, naturally and productively. Most of all, we believe that where we work should be inspiring. http://www.neuehouse.com
Royal Bank of Canada - Since our incorporation as a Canadian chartered bank in 1869, RBC has grown to become one of North America's leading diversified financial services companies providing banking, wealth management, insurance and capital markets services on a global basis. http://www.rbc.com/
Scandinavian Locations - Scandinavian Locations was founded in Stockholm in 2009 by the film commissions of Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark, and has a common aim to encourage the use of Scandinavian locations, facilities, talents and stories by the international audiovisual industry. The members provide free-of-charge services to the industry, and are the first port of call for international producers eyeing a shoot in Scandinavia. http://www.scandinavianlocations.org
Village Voice has come aboard as the FTF’s Media Partner and has signed on for the next two years. Among the benefits of the collaboration will be Print, Web, Mobile and Email campaigns directed to VV subscribers and readers as well as an extensive Social Media management program.
Our world is increasingly less tolerant of the risks associated with supporting films by first time filmmakers. This creates an ever more challenging environment for filmmakers to create truly inspired content without the need to focus on fundraising and economic success. Unfortunately many festivals have become so large they only provide exposure to already prominent filmmakers, while others are too small to attract quality films. As a result, too many great films remain unseen and too many exceptional filmmakers undeveloped.
And so, FIRST TIME FEST was born.
Johanna Bennett and Mandy Ward are the co-founders of FIRST TIME FEST. As an accomplished philanthropist, actor, and social entrepreneur, as well as the daughter of singer Tony Bennett, Johanna Bennett has immersed herself within the entertainment and artistic community her entire life. Mandy Ward has worked in the film industry for the past decade in varied capacities, namely as a film producer of several projects. Mitch Levine, CEO of The Film Festival Group, is producing the festival. Through his company, Mitch offers consulting services and expertise to film festivals, film commissions, distribution companies and filmmakers around the world, and was formerly the CEO and Executive Director of the renowned Palm Springs International Film Festival. The Festival’s Director of Programming is David Schwartz, the Chief Curator of Museum of the Moving Image.

16 Films Compete for the coveted Havana Star Prize
45-Latin American Film Line-Up Features a Record
24 Cuban Films Spanning 55 Years of Filmmaking in the Island
Havana Film Festival New York (HFFNY), a project of American Friends of the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba (AFLFC), will celebrate its 15th anniversary April 3-11, 2014, with a first-rate program showcasing 45 films from and about Latin America, the Caribbean, and Latinos in the United States. This year's line-up includes a record 24 Cuban films spanning 55 years of filmmaking in the island. The festival also features films from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Spain, Guatemala, Panama, Puerto Rico and the U.S., screening throughout Manhattan, Queens, and The Bronx, with Quad Cinema in Manhattan as the main venue. All foreign language films are subtitled in English.
"We want to celebrate our 15th anniversary by emphasizing the need to strengthen that meeting point where Latin America and the United States are perceived beyond the clichés and stereotypes usually assigned to each region through programming that highlights divergent and daring genres," said Diana Vargas, artistic director of HFFNY."Along these lines, we welcome a unique open dialogue with the presence of over 17 Cuban filmmakers that represent the different generations and ways of producing films in today's Cuba."
HFFNY will warm up its engines on March 28 at 6pm with a free screening of 100 Sones cubanos by composer and musician Edesio Alejandro as part of the First Fridays! event at The Bronx Museum of the Arts. This entertaining documentary traces the roots of Son, one of the most popular music rhythms in the island, through a travelogue to identify the 100 most representative songs of the genre.
"The strength of our 15th edition clearly reflects the continuity and endurance of American Friends of the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba's mission," said Carole Rosenberg, President of AFLFC."By sharing with our New York audience and visiting filmmakers such a wide range of cinematic stories from all over the continent, HFFNY continues developing cultural bridges between the United States and Cuba within a Latin American context," added Ines Aslan, Executive Director of AFLFC.
On Thursday April 3, starting at 5:45pm at the Director Guild Theater, HFFNY will roll out the red carpet to officially start off its 15th year anniversary with the U.S. premiere of Conducta / Behavior, the second feature by acclaimed Cuban director Ernesto Daranas (Los Dioses Rotos). Conducta, a box-office hit that had moviegoers flocking to theaters in Cuba for weeks, sending attendance records through the roof, tells the story of Chala, an 11-year-old boy who faces a difficult family situation. Fortunately he can count on Carmela, his six-grade teacher, who is convinced that Chala should have a second chance through education. Actors Alina Rodríguez, Armando Valdés, and Idalmis García will attend the screening, followed by a party at the Copacabana Nightclub.
On Friday, April 11, at 6:30pm, HFFNY will wrap up with the Havana Star Awards ceremony and the NY premiere of the Argentine film The German Doctor / El doctor alemán, written, produced and directed by Lucía Puenzo. The film chronicles the time period that Josef Mengele, the Nazi officer and physician known as the "Angel of Death," spent in Argentina's Patagonia region. In that remote land Mengele meets a local family with whom he might continue his human experiments in search of the "pure race." The German Doctor was Argentina's submission for this year's Foreign Language Oscar. The Closing Night party will feature live performances by Cuban luminaries Kelvis Ochoa and CuCu Diamantes, and her band members coming from Cuba.
Sixteen films will be competing for Havana Star Awards for Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Documentary. The Best Picture winner will receive a theatrical run at Quad Cinema, our main hosting venue.
Fiction Competition: Los dueños (Agustín Toscano, Ezequiel Radusky, Argentina), O lobo atrás da porta (Fernando Coimbra, Brasil), Las analfabetas (Moisés Sepulveda, Chile), Esther en alguna parte (Gerardo Chijona, Cuba), Conducta (Ernesto Daranas, Cuba), Melaza (Carlos Lechuga, Cuba), Se vende (Jorge Perugorría, Cuba), No robarás... Other festival attractions include the special presentation of Heli, the latest feature by Mexican festival-circuit darling Amat Escalante. The film, which garnered awards at Cannes and other important international festivals, depicts the struggles of a young couple whose love gets intertwined with Mexico's drug traffic violence. Cuban Indie Jirafas, by Kiki Álvarez, is the story of 3 youngsters who while sharing an apartment in La Habana get to know unexpected aspects of each other.
This year's HFFNY will pay tribute to Cuban cinema with New Cuban Cinema: 55 Years of a Shared Dream, a sidebar featuring 14 works spanning over five decades of production by the renown ICAIC. Curated by film critic and director of Cinemateca de Cuba Luciano Castillo, this special program presents a wide panorama of film production in the island through emblematic works little known in the U.S., some of which were subtitled and restored to near mint-condition especially for this occasion. The festival will also honor Cuban filmmaker Daniel Díaz Torres, who died last September, by showcasing two of his most famous works: his latest feature La película de Ana, whose leading actress Laura de la Uz will attend the NY premiere, and the classic Hacerse el sueco, a hilarious comedy.
The Borough of Queens will get its share of the festival with screenings at the Museum of the Moving Image. On Friday, April 4 at 7:00pm, O lobo atrás da Porta by Brazilian Fernando Coimbra, will have its NY premiere followed by a Q&A with the director. On Saturday, April 5 at 6:30pm, Esther en alguna parte, by Cuban Gerardo Chijona, pays homage to stars of Cuban cinema such as Reinaldo Mirabales. On Sunday, April 6 at 5:00pm, a Guatemala - Mexico co-production directed by Diego Quemada-Diez that has won over thirty awards, La jaula de oro is the story of three Guatemalan kids trying to cross the border into Mexico.
On April 4, HFFNY will welcome to Quad Cinema three US-based Latino filmmakers: Yolanda Pividal, whose moving documentary Of Kites and Borders tells the lives of children living close to the border between Tijuana and San Diego;Cuban-aAmericanLina Sarrello bringsher Lobo, un cuento orisha, her own version of the Little Red Riding Hood with a tinge of santería; and the second shortfilmby actress and director Laura Gómez, Hallelujah, where love might get a divine intervention that was probably not asked for.
HFFNY is proud to welcome one of the most prestigious educational entities in the city: School of Visual Arts (SVA) and its BFA Film and Video Department. On Monday, April 7, SVA will present a special program on contemporary Cuban cinema. At 6:00pm, a retrospective of short films by young Cuban directors that exemplifies the work of a new generation of filmmakers will include Camionero by Sebastián Miló, La Trucha by Luis Ernesto Doñas, and Tarde para Ramón by Daniel Chile. At 7:30pm, an exceptional open dialogue discussing the modes of production in today's Cuban cinema for the first time in the U.S., New Horizons of Contemporary Cuban Cinema will feature Cuban directors Gerardo Chijona (Esther en alguna parte), Carlos Lechuga (Melaza), Jorge Perugorría (Se vende), Kiki Álvarez (Jirafas) producer Claudia Calviño (Juan de los muertos), and casting director Libia Batista (7 Days in Havana, Ché).
On Tuesday, April 8, at NYU's King Juan Carlos of Spain Center, two films will share unknown chapters in Latin American history. Starting at 6:00pm, Cesó la horrible noche, by Ricardo Restrepo (Colombia), uses virgin footage to depict the heated climate and events that led to the violence on April 9 in Bogotá; and Coro de Silencio, by Roberto Rodríguez(Cuba - Puerto Rico), shares the director's experience as part of Operation Peter Pan. At 7:30pm, the round table Meet the industry: A look at the State of the Film Industry: International Markets and Distribution in the U.S., will feature industry experts Alfredo Calvino, director of Habanero Films, Elliot S. Kanbar, author of the book You Finally Finished Your Film. Now What?, and Louie Perego, director of Prime Latino Media.
Last but not least, in association with Bildner Center for Western Hemisphere Studies at CUNY, HFFNY presents three iconic works of Cuban cinema included in the sidebar New Cuban Cinema: 55 Years of a Shared Dream: the Historias de la revolución by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, Now! de Santiago Álvarez, and El Cowboy by Jesús de Armas. The screening will be followed by a talk by Luciano Castillo, curator of the series and director of Cinemateca de Cuba; and Jerry Carlson, Bildner Center Senior Fellow.

India to get spotlight at 10th Zurich Film Festival
Indian Cinema: Beyond the Boundaries of Bollywood Subcontinent as ZFF Guest in New World View Section
ZFF focuses on the development of a promising national film scene in its New World View section. This year’s guest country is India. Emerging from the shadow of the subcontinent’s mass cinema Bollywood tradition and enjoying growing national success is a young, independent film scene with productions that approach new themes with fresh narrative styles. ZFF will screen ten new feature and documentary films by emerging Indian filmmakers and a short film block.
Highest production output worldwide
Namaste! – For its tenth edition, the Zurich Film Festival (ZFF) welcomes India as its New World View section guest. In doing so, ZFF highlights a country with a tradition spanning more than 100 years of cinematic history and a production output – between 800 and 1000 films annually – that makes it the globe’s undisputed number 1. It is, however, not the formally corseted mass cinema tradition known in the west as Bollywood that is of interest, but the latest developments in the type of auteur film that first came to the world’s attention in the mid 50s thanks to such luminaries of the so-called Indian New Wave as Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen.
High quality independent cinema with thematic freshness
In explaining the decision to choose India, the co-directors Nadja Schildknecht and Karl Spoerri said, “new Indian cinema has experienced an upsurge in recent years, and not just on the subcontinent.” It is among young filmmakers that the change is most visible. The festival-directors go on to say, “New projects have been realised over the past few years that undermine common stereotypes. The movement from mainstream to independent cinema is unmistakable. This development is incredibly exciting.” Even the large festivals such as Cannes have discovered the potential of Indian cinema for themselves. There has not been a line-up in recent years that did not include an Indian film. Schildknecht and Spoerri are certain for this reason that “focussing on India can only serve to enrich the 10th ZFF.”
M.K. Lokesh, the Ambassodor of India to Switzerland, is delighted by the festival's choice: “Over the years, the Indian film industry has achieved a very high level of technical standards and directional skills. In the Indo-Swiss context, the Indian cinema, by capturing the natural beauty of Switzerland in many films, contributed to Swiss popularity among Indian tourists. It is befitting that the Zurich Film Festival is showcasing India as the guest country this year.”
Indeed, Indian festival entries are usually and rightfully praised for their thematic freshness and high cinematic quality. The best examples of these attributes include Vasan Balas’ promising debut PEDDLERS, a captivating relationship drama in the form of a thriller; the romantic comedy THE LUNCHBOX by newcomer Ritesh Batra, and the family/gangster saga GANGS OF WASSEYPUR, Anurag Kashyap’s „Indian Godfather“ (NZZ am Sonntag) - with a budget of 45 M USD, the most expensive non-Bollywood production to date.
It was not only with the launching of THE LUNCHBOX in 2013 that ZFF reacted early to the subcontinent’s cinematic signals; guest in Zurich and highly successful producer Guneet Monga (THE LUNCHBOX, THE GANGS OF WASSEYPUR and PEDDLERS) also offered a preview of things to come during her ZFF Master Class. Bollywood bastion Yash Raj Films hired Guneet Monga’s for the international sales and distribution of the adolescent drama TITLI – an indication that the traditional Indian film scene is giving independent domestic cinema a commercial chance.
The programme of this year’s New World View section will showcase ten new feature and documentary films by emerging Indian filmmakers and a short film block. The short film block is curated through our collaboration with the Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur. Details of the programme will be released at a later date.
