FMX 2014 Conference on Animation, Effects, Games and Transmedia

0
0

Realtime, Immediate Feedback, Virtual Production and Disruption - this year's main topics - affect all communities, thus creating new space for discussions on shared interests, such as education. For this reason, FMX dedicates a series of talks to "Disruptive Education." In addition, the program features presentations on Oscar-nominee Frozen and the international film project The Physician complete with its Producer Nico Hofmann as well as renowned personalities such as Star Wars Concept Designer Christian Gossett and Oscar-winning Animator Chris Landreth. The extensive tableau of FMX highlights is complemented by high-quality contributions in the areas of Lighting & Rendering, Immersion, Animation Wild 'n Strange and Interactive Graphic Novels.

ArrowDisruptive Education during times of change

Globalization, outsourcing, re-orientation and specialization: last years' disruption or paradigm shift continues to present the industry with new challenges and opportunities. This applies specifically to the education sector, where the foundations for sustainability and innovation are laid. But how does education address current skill sets? Should students be learning to be generalists or specialists? Marilyn Friedman, animation, visual effects, and digital media arts professional and former Head of Outreach at DreamWorks Animation, curates a track on "Disruptive Education" where these highly important questions move into the spotlight. The track brings together renowned industry and education professionals from across the FMX Conference and Forum for presentations and panels to further knowledge exchange and cooperation between the two intertwined sectors. Other hot topics of debate include online education, the implications of working virtually or remotely, professional cross-over between education and industry, and the engagement with R&D.

ArrowLighting & Rendering assembles nominees and winners: Oscar-nominated Frozen and more

Immediacy and efficiency ultimately define the demands of Lighting & Rendering tools and techniques today that are spotlighted in a dedicated track curated by Christophe Hery, Senior Scientist at Pixar Animation Studios. Mohit Kallianpur, Look and Lighting Supervisor at Walt Disney Animation Studios, therefore dedicates his presentation to the lighting techniques applied in the highly successful Frozen, an Academy Award contender in the "Best Animated Feature" category. In contrast, Danny Nahmias, Technical Director at Pixar Animation Studios, looks at efficient work processes for quality lighting: Nahmias explains Pixar's lighting preview tool, using GPU raytracing and built on top of Monsters University physically based illumination model, which allows for interactive feedback. ILM's Plume, which simulates and renders fire, smoke and explosions for motion picture visual effects, is yet another tool designed to shorten the feedback loop. ILM R&D Principal Engineer Olivier Maury demonstrates the tool that earned him a Technical Achievement Academy Award just two weeks ago.

ArrowAnimation Wild 'n Strange spotlights independent filmmaking

Independent animation takes center stage at FMX with the recurring and popular "Wild 'n Strange" track. Curator Andreas Hykade (Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg) presents animated films that have their origins beyond the popular blockbuster industry. Chris Landreth, who won an Academy Award in the category "Best Animated Short" for his animated documentary Ryan in 2004, sheds light on his personal journey as an independent filmmaker. The Animator Regina Pessoa complements his insights with her very own perspective and demonstrates that even dark subject matters can be tackled with an elegant and unique animation style. In addition, Mait Laas presents the world's very first stop motion puppet opera Lisa Limone and Maroc Orange, A Rapid Love Story. The first Estonian full-length 3D film revolves around a love story set against the backdrop of illegal immigration. Moreover, Animator and Game Designer Lea Schoenfelder invites the audience to question its perception of femininity and gender roles with her Kinect game Perfect Woman.

ArrowVFX Made in Germany: The Physician

German top producer Nico Hofmann brings the bestseller adaptation The Physician to FMX. Hofmann, who produced the European film project starring an international cast including Ben Kingsley and Stellan Skarsgård in cooperation with Wolf Bauer, gets ready to answer questions in a dedicated Q&A session with an emphasis on the production of international film projects in Germany. The production perspective is rounded off with a VFX focus: Sven Martin, VFX Supervisor at PIXOMONDO, demonstrates the pipelines that were deployed in Phillip Stoelzl's historic epic. PIXOMONDO created the 11th century Persian city of Isfahan in full CG with crowd simulation for the battle scenes in The Physician. The internationally based VFX studio received an Academy Award for its contributions to Hugo in 2012 and is, once again, among the aspiring award contenders this year with Star Trek: Into Darkness.

ArrowThe hybrid board game marbleverse

FMX makes room for both renowned game companies and new talent in interactive gaming. The contributions to the Cinematics track on Beyond: Two Souls and Killzone: Shadow Fall (cf. press release 1) are further complemented by a completely different gaming experience as part of a series of talks on immersion and interfaces. Jens Merkl, Roland Sigmond and Torsten Arnold, founders of HELDEN Hybrid Games, introduce their game marbleverse. The hybrid board game marbleverse enhances the analogue children's game with augmented reality and audiovisual elements in the form of an app.

ArrowInteractive Graphic Novels from Star Wars to netwars

Interactive Graphic Novels combine an innovative form of illustration with a captivating narrative to create an immersive experience for users to explore. The curator team "Studio Werkbericht" showcases four different approaches. Writer and Artist Christian Gossett, who made his name with Star Wars artwork for Lucasfilm Ltd., leads the way with his presentation on The Red Star. Gossett created the highly successful sci-fi comic book series that was first launched as a PS2/PS3 action video game and is currently being developed for the big screen. But how do you translate haptic feel into virtual experience? Christian Moreillon, Creative Lead at Brozermo/MoComics, uses the example of his own company to analyze how an immersive comics experience balances artistic finery with user control. The adaptation of graphic novels for the web remains in focus, when Remco Vlaanderen zooms in on the creation of Submarine Channel's The Art of Pho based on Julian Hanshaw's graphic novel. Saskia Kress, Producer at Filmtank GmbH, goes even further in pushing genre boundaries: her presentation features the cross media project netwars, a fact-based TV and interactive web documentary, TV series and graphic novel app that puts its finger on the timely topic of cyber-warfare.

Animation Installations
An ambitious international programme of animation installations makes up a ribbon through downtown Utrecht, from festival centre LHC to the City Hall. For example the installation Recycled by Lei Lei (China) and Thomas Sauvin, who won a Grand Prix HAFF in 2013. On the occasion of Norman McLaren’s one hundredth birthday, HAFF presents the world première of a special, experimental installation of this Scottish award-winning animator. The British artist Paul Vester presents his installation For a Clock (Blue Beat Version), in which he depicts his fascination with time. Chao Wu (China) returns to Utrecht with her installation Happen. Turkish fine artist/video artist Erdal Inci will present his digital work Patterns of Motion.

Animation is applied in a broad spectrum of audiovisual manifestations – from cartoons, music videos, TV motion graphics and special effects in feature films to games, web design and smartphone applications. On the cutting edge of fine art and film, too, exceptional animation installations have been created in recent years. The combination of the potential of animation film and spatial art yields an entirely unique visual language and a new way of presenting things.

Tropfest, the world’s largest short film festival, today announced that it will take a series of short film screenings to South Africa, Kenya and Zimbabwe in 2014, paving the way for further expansion plans in the coming years.

Tropfest Managing Director, Michael Laverty, will visit Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Johannesburg and Pretoria this month, as a guest of the The Australian High Commission in Pretoria, to present a series of short film screenings to South African audiences. The film program will comprise highlights from former Tropfest Australia winners and finalists between the years 2005 and December 2013. Tropfest films will also be screened at events in Kenya and Zimbabwe this month.

Tropfest, which had humble beginnings in a local café in Sydney two decades ago, has grown to become the world’s largest short film festival, with competitions now held in Australia, South East Asia, New Zealand and the Middle East.

Tropfest is committed to fostering filmmaking talent at an international level and offers a ground-breaking opportunity for filmmakers to showcase their skills in front of the largest live audience a short film can get.

Festival organisers hope to establish an African version of the competition in the future:

“The massive expansion of Tropfest around the globe conveys a worldwide appetite for fresh storytelling voices. It is so exciting to have Tropfest travel to Africa. We know that there is an enormous community of storytellers in this region, and we hope to one day establish a local platform for these filmmakers - with a global audience to share their stories with”, said Tropfest Founder and Director, John Polson.

Australia’s High Commissioner to South Africa, HE Mr Graeme Wilson, added: “I am proud that Australia is supporting this important cultural exchange in the film sector, and hope that Tropfest will be well received by South African audiences. This festival forms part of a larger program of cultural and sporting events planned to coincide with this year’s 20th anniversary of democracy celebrations, which will showcase the strong and diverse Australia-South Africa relationship to the broader public.”

Tropfest

Tropfest is Australia’s most prestigious short film festival and one of its most iconic cultural events. It is also the largest short film festival in the world. Founded in 1993 by film director John Polson as a small screening for family and friends at Sydney’s Tropicana Café, the festival now attracts a national event audience of around 150,000 people. The event is hosted in Sydney with a live national broadcast on SBS 2. The short film competition is unique in that every film must be made specifically for Tropfest, will premiere at Tropfest Australia and include the Tropfest Signature Item (TSI), which changes each year. 16 Finalists are selected from an average 650 entries. Tropfest has expanded internationally to now include new competitions and festivals in North America, (New York), the Middle East, New Zealand and South East Asia.

JOHN POLSON – Founder/Director, Tropfest

John Polson is an award-winning actor and director, as well as the founder and director of the World’s Largest Short Film Festival, Tropfest. John is the creative force behind Tropfest’s success and global expansion, from its humble beginnings as a screening of one of his own short films at Sydney’s Tropicana Cafe in 1993.

Tropfest in Australia attracts a live audience of around 150,000 people on a single night, as well as hundreds of thousands more via a simultaneous television broadcast. Tropfest has been held in New York, Berlin, London, Bangkok, Beijing, Aspen with plans to enter many other countries. First and foremost, though, John’s passion lies behind the camera as a film director.

Creating his first short film AN EVENING WITH HERMAN in the early 1980s, John has since garnered worldwide attention with feature films such as SIAM SUNSET (starring Linus Roache), which won awards at numerous film festivals around the world (including the Cannes International Film Festival). He also directed the US feature films SWIMFAN (starring Jesse Bradford, Erica Christensen) and HIDE AND SEEK (starring Robert De Niro, Dakota Fanning), both of which opened at Number 1 at the US box office. John’s latest feature film TENDERNESS, in which he directed Russell Crowe and Laura Dern, was released in 2009.

Today, in addition to his feature film work, John flexes his creative muscle on the small screen as a producer and director on shows such as FRINGE, THE MENTALIST, ELEMENTARY, THE GOOD WIFE and FLASH FORWARD. John is currently developing a number of projects as both director and producer in the US and Australia.

21.00 - O Recado de José Fonseca e Costa (Portugal) – 110 min -

“O Recado” is the first feature by José Fonseca e Costa. It is one of the most representative of the Portuguese Cinema Novo because, although within the realistic tradition, it approaches it in a new frontal language  with cleverly drawn social portraits, showing the old regime fascist police, now under the name  of “marcelism” after the name of the 1st prime minister who came after  Salazar. Lúcia has a suitor of her own social class, António, but still keeps in her heart the loving memory of Francisco, an adventurous and socially rejected man. Long gone, Francisco sends her the message of his return by the homeless Maldevivre but is killed by a gang, perhaps in a settlement of a dispute.  Lúcia waits for him in vain in the place and time accorded, a deserted beach, till the day she knows by Maldevivre of his death. This forces her to let go forever of the chance of touching a strange world that fascinates her. Disenchanted, Lúcia gives up in front of the rules and values that António represents. On the other hand, Maldevivre is just waiting for his own anger to grow and burst.

23.00 - Industry Screenings - Jinga Films - On Tender Hooks de Kate Shenton (GB) – 70 min -

An eye-opening documentary exploring the world of human suspension which challenges the perceptions and squeamishness of even the most hardened viewer. This act of body modification involves piercing different parts of the human body with hooks attached to wires, before lifting the subject into mid air, their body weight completely suspended by the hooks that pierce their flesh.

A very unusual story of science fiction  with episodes of our humanity. Winner at the Long Island Film festival.

Black International Cinema Berlin originated from the Black Cultural Festival, which was produced and directed by Fountainhead® Tanz Théâtre in 1986 for the first time in Europe, a 3-week event in Berlin, which presented the contributions of Black people to world culture through film, theater, dance, music, workshops and seminars, and was an homage to the legendary tap dancer, Carnell Lyons.

The venues were the Theatermanufaktur am Halleschen Ufer from March 3-16, music – dance – theatre; Hochschule der Künste Berlin on March 11, symposium; Kino Arsenal from March 17-23, film.

Organization and Artistic Direction: Prof. Gayle McKinney Griffith (USA/Berlin), Prof. Donald Muldrow Griffith (USA/Berlin), Donald Muldrow McKinney Griffith II (USA/Berlin), Dr. Ntongela Masilela (South Africa); in cooperation with: Prof. Dr. Abdul Alkalimat (USA), Uazuvara Ewald Katjivena (Namibia), Getinet Belay (Ethiopia), Joliba Africa Center; Organization: Erika Gregor (Arsenal Cinema, Germany); Organization Assistance: Annette Koschmieder (Germany)

Since then, Fountainhead® Tanz Théâtre produces and directs the Black International Cinema Berlin each year in Berlin and additionally, in other European and US-American cities.

The festival focuses on presenting works of an artistic, cultural or political nature coinciding with the general educational, social, artistic and economic interest of people from Africa, the African Diaspora and people with an interest in participating in intercultural communication and the resultant interfacing and sharing of educational, social, artistic and economic resources.

Furthermore, Black International Cinema Berlin is open to ALL filmmakers and contributes to better understanding and increasing cooperation between people from various cultural, ethnic, national and religious backgrounds, in order to reduce prejudice and support a peaceful and respectful living together in our multi-faceted societies.

Black International Cinema Berlin is a festival based upon our mission statement and the objectives and methods as stated within the entry form.

"Footprints in the Sand?" Exhibition
Photographic Exhibition - Visual Documentation

The exhibition documents the history of
Fountainhead® Tanz Théâtre

in association with
International Artists

Fountainhead® Tanz Théâtre was founded by Prof. Donald Muldrow Griffith, Prof. Gayle McKinney Griffith, Lynnda Curry, Ricky Powell and Detlef Bäcker, four American artists and a German colleague, who met in Berlin during 1979 at Theater des Westens and decided to undertake intercultural, interdisciplinary and international productions in dance, theatre, television, workshops, film/video festivals and publications.
This exhibition paints a picture of the activities of various people during their historical contributions to Berlin, elsewhere and hence, the portrait seeks to prevent these undertakings from becoming "Footprints in the Sand?".

Passing of Chinua Achebe

Chinua you’ve passed away I hear
So suddenly I can’t believe it
Because you are so much needed
As a voice
Of wisdom
In this world

Oh Chinua you’ve passed away
Achebe you’ve gone your way
And on that way you told us
So many important things
Along the way, along
Our journey, even
If unto us unknown you told us
So many important things
Like that things fall apart
Things which have become corrupted
Because of colonialism
Things that fell apart
Because of that destruction
That left imprints of confusion
And set into motion
A dangerous mechanism that seems to ensure
That things continue
To fall apart
As a result of confusion
And too little action
To address the structures of the system
That seems to ensure
That things continue
To fall Out of the order
That once has been
Upon a time
Before the destruction
When there was balance
In times long time ago

And now without you
The world falls apart
Even a little bit more
Without you we are
No longer at Ease

So let us make an offering
To honour you and as a remedy
That things
Will get back into shape
As it had been
In the sacred forest of the origin.

Presenting documentary films of Dr. Mahoma Mwaungulu and the issue of "Request or Demand" on the refugees behalf, as the visual basis for the discussion.

XXVIII. Black International Cinema Berlin (BICB) 2013

About the 2013 Festival (BICB) in Berlin
Margarita Mejia

I only wanted to go for a little walk through the festival, to introduce one of the scheduled documentaries and maybe answer a few questions. But this unpretentious initial expectation became an experience that changed something inside me.
This meeting in Berlin has revived the hope of a better future for humankind, where diversity, instead of creating conflict, becomes an appreciated, respected, and admired unifying element.
Through music, art and culture presented in video, the Black International Cinema Berlin contributed to create a scenario that helped to increase the awareness, that we are all one... all of us searching for similar objectives. Trying to find them in a game, a song, in the dance or in the simple act of sharing, where being the most talented is irrelevant, since the important thing is to sing even out of tune, but keep singing. Take one step after another, try again and again ... building the road and doing it together.
Roma and Sinti, Black people, the Indigenous population, Caucasians, Muslims, Christians, east, west, an enormous range of infinite colors, Flamenco from Mexico and classical music from Colombia. Boundaries are blurring in a global village, where everyone is equal and taken into account.
Berlin gave me a great unexpected gift. A hint of it all starts to make sense ... that I am you, you are me, we are all one, and the differences are mere fictions.
I therefore hope that next year, like this one, at the end of the festival days, I will just relax and have a beer with my new lifelong friends, united by diversity in all its forms.

Sobre el Festival en Berlín - 2013
Margarita Mejia

SCHWARZ GEMACHT
World Premiere

What is “identity”? What makes us who we are? Who has the right to define us? Set in 1938 Berlin and drawing heavily upon history, the play imagines a story that examines universal questions of self and citizenship primarily through the eyes of a patriotic Afrikanisch-Deutscher (African-German) actor. Proud to serve his country, he appears in propaganda films calling for the return of Germany’s former African colonies. An encounter with an African-American musician and activist leads to hard questions about the treatment of people of color both in Germany and in the United States of America.
