Official opening of the 9th Odesa International Film Festival with The Woman at War
On July 13, the Odessa National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater saw the solemn opening ceremony of the OIFF-2018, during which the films of the competition programs, the jury members and other famous guests were presented
The opening ceremony of the OIFF-2018 united film professionals from all over the world. Janina Sokolova and Oleh Panyuta were the hosts at the event. This year, OIFF received 1011 applications, and out of them, 108 films from 95 countries will be presented at the festival.
The ceremony started with an incredible performance by Apache Crew dance crew.
Pavel Rozenko, the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine, gave the introductory remarks urging everyone to support Oleg Sentsov, since that day the illegally imprisoned director turned 42 years old. Throughout the days of the Festival there will be a special place reserved for Oleg for each screening. And a short video telling about his decision to announce an indefinite hunger strike since May 14 will precede every film.
Pylyp Illenko, the head of Ukrainian State Film Agency, said: "The Odessa Film Festival and Ukrainian cinema are united in the process of revival of Ukrainian cinema that we are seeing today". Besides, he noted, that the number of Ukrainian films is increasing each year and this year OIFF has 49 of them. Then the floor went to Maxim Stepanov, the head of the Odesa Regional State Administration; to Anatoliy Urbansky the chairman of the Odesa Regional Council and to Gennadiy Trukhanov, the mayor of Odessa.
Victoria Tigipko, the OIFF President, greeted the guests of the film festival and said: "The OIFF program is unique. But unfortunately, 90% of the pictures that will be shown here, at the Odesa Film Festival, will not join Ukrainian film distribution. Therefore, coming to Odesa in summer gives you a chance to see them on a big screen. Today we are observing the renaissance of cinema in Ukraine. And we can judge not only by festival films - commercial cinema is also gaining momentum. The box office of such films as "Kiborgs", "The Stolen Princess", "Dzidzio contrabass" has amounted to 20-35 million hryvnias. And this is with only 520 cinema halls. Fair enough, we need at least twice as many. But even now we can talk about the prospects of high-quality cinema".
The first award of the 9th Odesa International Film Festival – the Golden Duke for the contribution to the cinema – was given by a special OIFF guest – Eric Roberts. "Truthiness is what we, actors, want to achieve. And only a few of us succeed", he noted. The first prize was awarded to Ada Rogovtseva. "You can hardly imagine what I'm feeling right now," said the legendary actress. “At the age of only two months I was brought to Odesa. Here I grew up and enjoyed my happy life when the war began. My childhood was burned down by that terrible war. After that I have been living, living, living for quite a long time (because I’m getting 81 in 3 days) and now it’s war again. And again we are talking about a boy who is like a son to me. We are talking about Sentsov. And about those guys who are now at war. But we all do have enough strength, inspiration, kindness and mercy to create and to come to such important events as today"
The films of competitive programs were announced: 12 films are presented in the International Competition Program of OIFF-2018, 6 films take part in the European Documentary program, and the National Program includes 5 full-length and 13 short films.
The jury of the 9th OIFF was also announced. The President of the Jury is Ewa Puszczynska, producer (Poland). Together with her, the films of the International Competition will be evaluated by Rites Batra, film director (India), Igor Minaev, theater and film director, screenwriter (Ukraine / France), Arnaud des Pallieres, director and scriptwriter (France) and Ia Shugliashvili, actress (Georgia). The works of Ukrainian cinematographers will be evaluated by Kate Molchanova, actress (Ukraine), Levan Koguashvili, film director and screenwriter (Georgia), Martina Bleis, co-head and project curator of the Berlinale Co-Production Market (Germany) and Marianne Slot, producer (France). The curator of the European Documentary Films is Serhiy Bukovsky, the winner of the last year's OIFF Award for Best Documentary. Ostap Kostyuk, film director (Ukraine), Dorota Lech, Programming Associate (Poland) and Galia Bador (Israel) will evaluate the films of the European Documentary Contest at the 9th OIFF. This year, the FIPRESCI jury include film critics Sergii Vasyliev Jr., (Ukraine), Robert Gorton (USA) and Sanjin Pejkovic (Sweden).
The Erling Band Trio from the Opening film “The Woman at War” marked the end of the official part of the Ceremony with a musical performance. After that the opening film was presented by Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir, the leading actress, Carine Leblanc, producer, Serge Lavrenyuk, co-producer, and Aliona Lavrenyuk, actress.
At the end of the ceremony, “Figaro“, the official catering partner of the Odesa Film Festival, invited the guests to the Marie Antoinette Opening Party at the Literature Museum yard. “ARARAT”, the official alcohol sponsor of the festival, treated the guests with the legendary Armenian brandy.
The first day marked the start of the screenings at Green Theater. The viewers had a chance to watch the films of non-competitive program which included “Dummy” and “Brief Encounters” – special screenings and works dedicated to the memory of Kira Muratova, a famous director, screenwriter and actress. This section will also screen the restored 4k version of Stanley Kubrick's movie "2001: The Space Odyssey", "The Night Eats the World" (directed by Dominique Rocher), presented by a well-known actor Dennis Lavant and other films.
The after-party took place at Caleton Festival Club, where the exclusive set from BNRTM was waiting for the guests.
The guests were driven to the red carpet by the official Renault Auto Partner, and the beauty looks were created by Oh My Look, the Red Carpet official partner. “ARARAT” treated the guests at Palais Royal and at Elissa - BAR & RESTAURANT, the Official Restaurant Partner of the Festival’s opening and closing ceremonies. The innovative Samsung partner presented its brand zone there.

The 1st Paleochora Lost World Short Film Festival launches in June 2019 in association with the Municipality of Kandanos-Selinou. The 'Lost World' of Paleochora nestles between the Mountains and Sea in South West Crete and is the perfect location for Filmmakers to convene to show their work, network with colleagues and enjoy our fabulous Cretan hospitality. We may be at the most southern point of Europe, but there are BIG Film things happening here and on the entire Island of Crete. Our main aim will be to select films which focus on great storytelling, whether fiction, documentary or any other accepted genre.
In due course we will announce details of parallel Talks and Master Classes which will be included in our Film Festival Programme. Keep a weather eye for details both here and on our website.
In addition to our listed venues, we are also aiming to include Open Air evening screenings in Central Paleochora. More news on this once we have finalised the details.
We have a limited number of complimentary rooms which the Paleochora Hotel Association has kindly offered to Officially Selected International visiting filmmakers. Once submissions close on April 15th, there will be an immediate lottery to determine which filmmakers will win complimentary accommodation.
(To be eligible, filmmakers must have reached Official Selection Status plus provide us with evidence of Travel to Crete arrangements/bookings. There will also be special hotel discounts available for Festival attendees.
We are open to all genres of Short Films, with the exception of gratuitous Horror.
Our core festival team is made up of a small group of volunteers, film enthusiasts and film professionals. Our goal is to provide the best possible communication and a fun, productive festival experience. If there is anything we can assist with, please send us an email and we will do our best to reply within 48hrs.
We look forward to your Film Submission.
Awards are not our top priority, great filmmaking is! If your Film is selected to screen at the Festival, it means we love it and know that our audience will too. We also expect to have to make tough choices about which films make it onto our Festival programme. However, since another of our big goals is to make this a Festival where Filmmakers take the opportunity to fully participate by attending our event, there is an LWSFF Award section reserved exclusively for participating Filmmakers who attend in person at our Festival in Paleochora.

Berlinale Talks: Charlotte Rampling's candidness is refreshing
(Charlotte Rampling, © Lindsay Bellinger 2019)
By LINDSAY R. BELLINGER
Ms. Charlotte Rampling was beyond charming during her talk with Peter Cowie and while answering at least a dozen questions from a mixed bag of audience members. The audience was treated to a number of memorable scenes from her eclectic and impressive array of films. The first scene was the moment from Stardust Memories when Woody Allen's director character approaches Rampling's character, admiring how interesting she is after having watched her all morning. It's a playful and light scene that unfolds between Rampling and Allen. The best moment was as soon as the lights came back on after the clip Ms. Rampling revealed a fun, playful smirk with a slight laugh that really made me wonder how lovely it must have been, her experience working that film.

The other scenes from her films did not earn such a noticeable reaction, which lead me to believe that there really must have been something special about working on that film with Woody Allen and his film team. Afterwards, we continued to see scenes from The Nightporter and Georgie Girl which was her first role on film. The discussion was quite frank and she laughed easily, as did the audience. It was really a very special evening listening to Ms. Rampling discuss her long and illustrious career in film and television.

The crowd did not disperse easily, as so many fans waiting patiently for autographs and photos of the extraordinary Golden Bear Homage recipient Charlotte Rampling.
Marie Kreuzer: The Ground beneath my feet
Marie Kreuzer is an Austrian writer director and producer. Her latest film, The Ground beneath my feet (Den Boden unter den Fußen) is in official completion at the 69th Berlinale. It tells the story of Lola, a successful consultant who struggles between finding her identity, sexuality and freedom, while being divided between a comfortable lifestyle and her past and her schizophrenic sister.
What was your starting point for the script?
There were many starting points. My aunt was schizophrenic and I used to spend a lot of time with her as a kid, and later when I was a student and we used to live in the same city. And it was quite difficult every time we met, she would become obsessive and wouldn’t let me go. Then I would distance myself and it would go like that time after time for a while. So I was doing research throughout my childhood and teenage hood without consciously knowing it. And I guess I was scared I would get the illness as well, especially because everyone was telling us we look so much alike.
The second stepping stone for the story was my step sister who was a consultant in a big company and the character, Lola, is inspired by her. I was still very young at the time, an artist, with no money and stable position and our worlds were so different. I did a documentary about her earlier but it wasn’t easy as most information on her work is confidential. So I was still fascinated to make a film and include this world of business and the image of our society it represents.
You do a one-woman show here. Was it a struggle writing and creating Lola?
Writing is hard for me, you are alone and you try to bring the project to the next level and get yourself going. And after that, I almost never remember how I did it, it’s like a closed chapter. And also it took me so long to make this film - I wrote it, then made two other films, had a baby and then came back to it. But I think Lola was always there, first as my step sister and later she became a person with other problems and a more rounded character with an emotional structure.
When you begin working with the actresses, there is a lot to discuss, it’s like testing your script again. Also, we initially thought of making the story for TV, and later we dropped it cause they would have wanted a more clear version of it, with a very transparent ending, and with Lola being a heroine, an only positive character, which she definitely is not in the film. But that’s what drew me in the first place anyway, that she was meant to be a normal person, not a heroine.
Do you find it harder for people who are in similar situation to Lola’s to identify with her, or the opposite?
It’s very hard to know who will like her and who won’t. There were people who worked with me, knew the story and yet said they cannot connect to the character. On the other hand there were those, whose emotions I have never seen openly expressed. They came to me and said that Lola touched them so much. It’s alway a gamble and very unpredictable, it depends on people’s situation at that particular time and place.
The film is about the alienation of the work system and the character is a bit caricaturesque. Was this important to you?
Very much. I did not want the consultants to seem cynical about their approach to life. I wanted people to understand that the way they see life and business is because they believe it’s for the better, for the greater good. It’s more about how over-working ourselves affects all of us. We feel we can never be enough, that we always need to push harder. Everyone can relate to that, I think.
Do you find there is stigma in Austria in regards to mental health? And even more today when we live in the era of over-labelling ourselves and having to justify everything we go though or choose to do.
I think there is stigma everywhere. But the fact that today sometimes we say ‘Oh, I’m so depressed’ without thinking that for people around us is a reality, I think has two sides. It might be dangerous but also the positive side is that we talk more, so if you are really depressed you can also say it. Mental health is obviously very broad and schizophrenia that we deal with in the film is on the more serious side. The reason I think people are always more scared of mental health issues, is because they are so unpredictable, maybe even more than cancer at times. The fear of losing control over yourself is what fascinated me as well so much in these characters.
Leakage | Nasht by Suzan Iravanian (Forum): Berlinale Review
Foziye’s husband, an employee in the regional oil company, has vanished into thin air. Although her questions remain unanswered about his whereabouts, her faith prevails that he is still alive. During her visit at the local pension centre, she still replies “married” when her marital status is requested. Her life has metamorphosed into an arduous journey, considering her financial hardship and lack of work. Her mother incriminates her inertia, whilst her daughter incessantly howls about the intricacies of life in Iran and her upcoming exodus to Germany, where she suspects her dad has relocated.
Nevertheless, the other family members are unaware that something is tormenting Foziye at a more profound level. Her stomach aches are gradually aggravating. The root cause of the pain, supernatural and obscure; crude oil is relentlessly pouring out of her body, soiling her vestments and the bed linen. Susan Iravanian impeccably reveals the enigma to the spectator through a down shot, accompanied by a classical music score, generating thus the antithetical emotions of disorientation and harmony.
Inasmuch as Foziye tries to bury her secret, consuming her days washing the bedlinen, it is not long before her mother discovers the stains. When the doctor announces that the discharge is not blood and that Foziye is perfectly healthy, the family acknowledges the legitimacy of her outcries. The plot thickens as we enter part two of the story; the displacement of the family in view of Foziye’s condition.
As they relocate to unknown territory, the paranoia intensifies; not only hers, but also Saeed’s, the poverty-stricken family servant. Her bodily malfunction is another man’s epiphany, who identifies a feasible profitability. Disbelief around the community, late-night crashes with forest animals, as well as the monotony of their isolated life, exacerbate the lunacy. Their lives whirl around the malady and the vision of an exodus is gradually drifting away.
Although the plot may cause disorientation at times, the overall result is admirable and demonstrates Iravanian’s stimulating fantasy and talent. Watch this when you’re feeling mystical.
