The American Film Institute (AFI) has announced the appointment of Michael Lumpkin as Director of AFI Festivals. AFI FEST presented by Audi, which takes place each fall in Hollywood, CA, and AFI DOCS, which takes place each June in the Washington, DC, area, will continue to operate as separate festivals, but year-round programming and operations will be combined to streamline efforts with studios, distributors, sponsors and cultural partners.
"AFI has celebrated films at festivals since its founding more than 50 years ago," said Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO. "As the art form continues to evolve in exciting ways — so has the art of finding an audience, and this new structure will strengthen AFI's voice on both coasts and across the nation."
In his new position, Lumpkin will lead both AFI FEST and AFI DOCS, the Institute's documentary festival. Lumpkin has served as Director of AFI DOCS since 2015. Prior to AFI, Lumpkin was Executive Director of the International Documentary Association for six years, and headed Frameline and its San Francisco International LGBTQ Film Festival for 25 years. He also produced HBO's groundbreaking 1995 documentary THE CELLULOID CLOSET.
"I am incredibly honored to have the opportunity to lead AFI's portfolio of outstanding film festivals spanning the country and all film genres, from AFI FEST, now in its 32nd year, to AFI DOCS in its 16th year, as well as other AFI film festival events," said Lumpkin. "I look forward to working with all of AFI's talented and dedicated exhibition staff on what will be stellar events in DC this month and in Hollywood in November."
Lumpkin is currently unveiling AFI DOCS 2018, which will take place June 13–17 in Washington, DC, and Silver Spring, MD. The festival brings together our nation's leaders and our nation's leading filmmakers to screen and discuss the best in documentary filmmaking with the movie-going public. This year's festival will open with the World Premiere of PERSONAL STATEMENT, with screenings to follow throughout landmark venues in DC and at the historic AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center in Silver Spring.
Jacqueline Lyanga, who began serving as Director of AFI FEST in 2010 and is a graduate of the AFI Conservatory, is departing her role to pursue new opportunities, and will consult with AFI through June to ensure a smooth transition.
"It has been an amazing and extremely rewarding experience to be part of the festival's growth in scope and influence as the Director of AFI FEST for the past eight years," said Lyanga. "My time at AFI goes back to 2005 during which I've seen this incredible organization continue to evolve and I have been able to work closely with a tremendous and passionate group of movie-lovers. I'm so proud of where we've taken the festival, and now I’m ready for new challenges and opportunities."
About the American Film Institute
The American Film Institute was established by presidential proclamation in the White House Rose Garden, and launched its national mandate on June 5, 1967 — to preserve the heritage of the motion picture, to honor the artists and their work and to educate the next generation of storytellers. AFI's founding Trustees included Chairman Gregory Peck, Vice Chairman Sidney Poitier, Francis Ford Coppola, Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., Jack Valenti and George Stevens, Jr., as Director.
About AFI DOCS
AFI DOCS is the American Film Institute's annual documentary festival in Washington, DC. Presenting the year's best documentaries, AFI DOCS is the only festival in the U.S. dedicated to screenings and events that connect audiences, filmmakers and policy leaders in the heart of our nation's government. The AFI DOCS advisory board includes Ken Burns, Davis Guggenheim, Chris Hegedus, Werner Herzog, Rory Kennedy, Barbara Kopple, Spike Lee, Errol Morris, Stanley Nelson, D A Pennebaker, Agnès Varda and Frederick Wiseman. Now in its 16th year, the festival will be held June 13–17, 2018, at distinguished Washington, DC, venues, the Landmark E Street Cinema and the historic AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, MD. Visit AFI.com/AFIDOCS and connect on twitter.com/AFIDOCS, facebook.com/AFIDOCS, youtube.com/AFI and instagram.com/AmericanFilmInstitute.

AFI FEST is the only festival of its stature that is free to the public. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recognizes AFI FEST as a qualifying festival for the Live Action and Animated Short Film categories for the annual Academy Awards®. Mifa 2018: Growth
The Mifa, which is the biggest international market dedicated to animated films, has just closed with a new record year. With nearly 3,800 participants (+23% compared to 2017) from 75 countries, this event, which brings together professionals and emerging talents working in the audiovisual and animated films sectors from around the world every year, continues its development and growth that dates back 11 years.
"We feel that this has been a very particular year. In addition to the changes that were successfully implemented last year and continued this year (a 4-day Market, from 12th to 15th June, instead of a 3-day Market that was in place until 2016; another extension of the areas, thus increasing the surface area of the Market to more than 7,200m2; new VR areas; the second summit with Women in Animation and Les Femmes s’Animent; meetings between talented individuals, students and professionals at the Mifa Campus…), new measures were added: Market Screenings, Meet the Composers, Shoot the Book Anim’ and Demo Sessions. Each of these events has received a number of people that exceeded what we had supposed and helps us to start imagining a 2019 Mifa that can fulfil expectations in an even better way." Mifa Animation Industry Award to Women in Animation
The Festival decided in 2015 to put women at the top of the billing, with an entirely female jury, the design of the official poster entrusted to a well-known female artist, and a programme of films by female directors. In 2016, Michèle Lemieux created the poster, and 7 of the 12 jury members were women. In 2017, the Mifa hosted the first Women in Animation World Summits, and, eager to strengthen its commitment to women in animation, the Mifa decided to award the Mifa Animation Industry Award for the 1st time to a symbolic organisation, Women in Animation, because the world of animation is inextricably linked with women!

NEM 2018, an event dedicated to the television industry with an emphasis on the CEE region, was held last week from June 11 to 14 in beautiful Dubrovnik in the Dubrovnik Palace Hotel. For the sixth year in a row, NEM opened its doors to media experts and this year it gathered more than 800 participants, which marks a new record for attendance. With a little over 50 panelists, top professionals in the television industry who shared their experiences and knowledge with the audience and colleagues, this year’s NEM attracted a variety of visitors from all over the world.
NEM 2018 will be remembered for its interesting panel discussions, such as “Pay TV: Keeping up with… The Digital Content Game”, where Salim Mukaddam, General Manager and Vice President of BBC Worldwide for CEE, stated that “people are platform-agnostic, wherever the content is, they’re going there”. NEM 2018’s focus on locally-produced content was once again confirmed by Katharina Behrends, NBCUniversal’s Managing Director for CEE, who pointed out that Pay TV should be adjusted to local communities.
One of the hottest topics out there, just a day before the start of the football World Cup, was a panel about the high prices of football rights, which are a result of a multitude of factors. Alex Pinheiro Rotter from Mediapro put it the following way: “Sports is the only property that can bring a lot of audience in a specific time slot, unlike any other property. Even though the interest is highest in the local league, the demand for premium international content, such as the UEFA Champions League and the Big Five, definitely exists.“
The two panels dedicated to local production showed us that local content seems to perform best with the audience for most of the FTAs. Henning Tewes, CEO of RTL Croatia, Matthias Settele, General Director of TV Markiza, Dražen Mavrić, Head of the Management Board at Nova TV, Gabriella Vidus, CEO of RTL Hungary, and Pete Smith, Managing Director of Antenna International, concluded that there is a need for quality screenwriters and that the main drawbacks of local production are its price and the risks that come out of it when discussing younger demographics and digital trends.
Discussing piracy in the region, Damir Novinić, Advisor to the General Manager of Croatian Radiotelevision, said we got ourselves to blame: “Piracy is growing because we are allowing it. We are very inert, very slow to react.” Damir Hajduk, Chairman of the Croatian Agency for Electronic Media, concluded “there is a culture of piracy we have to address”, agreeing with other panelists that enforcing cooperation between all stakeholders is a crucial step in addressing the problem of piracy.
One of the most interesting presentations was surely the one by Arash Pendari on applying AI in the TV industry. Unlike the traditional shallow metadata, Arash’s team at Vionlabs worked in a completely new direction using emotional audio data to provide an advanced user experience for the consumers with individualized content and AI-generated movie trailers.
Another look into the future was provided by LG Electronics which gave insight into a whole new era of television with a presentation by Gyorgy Takacs. The endless possibilities of this amazing TV as well as the best viewing experience make LG OLED TV the leader in premium technologies with ultimate picture quality, ultimate design, and smart artificial intelligence.
How to revamp a 130-year-old brand was a question answered by Christian Brent, SVP of Research & Strategy at National Geographic, in an amazing and emotional presentation.
Exclusive screenings were also part of NEM 2018 and, as every year, participants and guests could see new formats by renowned distribution companies (Global Agency, Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, MGM, BBC Studios, Keshet International).
Opportunities for networking and socializing were at every turn, with coffee breaks being sponsored by renowned companies such as Viacom, Comcast, A1 Broadcasting and Turkish Airlines. There were also wine tastings organized by Irdeto, as well as a fabulous Wine Tasting with Pickbox in cooperation with Jakovac Wines.
Nevertheless, true networking was happening at traditional NEM evening parties. The first day started with a wonderful sunset and welcome drink by NBCUniversal & Comcast, the second day was concluded with an exclusive party by NEM’s long-time sponsor Eutelsat at the Vala Beach of the Dubrovnik Palace Hotel, whereas FOX Networks Group took care of the exclusive ending of NEM 2018 at the Banje Beach Club in the old town of Dubrovnik.
NEM 2018 has confirmed the exclusivity of its event and once again proved itself as an important event of the media industry and a loyal partner to its visitors. The NEM team would like to thank not only to the sponsors and participants, but also to over 30 media partners that followed NEM and spread the word about event.

We have teamed up with Arts by the People to present works from their new project, Moving Words.
Moving Words will intersect voices of all ages through writers whose submitted works will be transformed into short films by animation students at various international animation schools. These writers, under the guidance of ARTS By The People’s writing scholar, will have their works voice acted and subsequently animated by college students.
We will present some of these animated shorts during our festival on Septemeber 9th in NYC and September 14-16 in Paris.
This is truly an exciting and inspiring project and you will not want to miss it!

The Golden Apricot Film festival in Yerevan, the beautiful capitol of Armenia.
offers a selection of films this year as offbeat and unusual as the very name of the festival itself. First of all -- Why apricots? It turns out this tasty golden colored fruit is a major agricultural product of the country and as such has become a kind of national symbol. Moreover, apricots are in season at this time of the year and prominently fill bins in all the markets. Most interesting of all, the film festival kicks off with a quasi religious ceremony, the blessing of the apricots by local clergy. At the conclusion of the festival prize winners will receive not only official emblems and medals of recognition but a bulging basket of fresh apricots as well! Who could ask for anything more...
So much for the unique apricotic background of the Vosge Dziran film festival, next the upcoming film agenda ....
The jury has been announced!

Larry Smith first entered the movie business aged 20, at Sheperton Studios outside London, circa 1969. He realised early on that studio life was not for him, the pace and amount of people working in a major studio felt like a factory. Larry Smith moved into the freelance world. Around the 1970's, he was fortunate to meet Stanley Kubrick when asked to work on Barry Lyndon. This started a long collaboration with Kubrick that was to last over a quarter of a century, until his premature death. Larry Smith was very honoured to have been asked to be the cinematographer on his last movie Eyes Wide Shut. Since Eyes Wide Shut, Smith has made many varied and interesting films including a movie that he directed himself (Trafficker,2015).

She has taken this same approach, committing to a project from concept to completion, in her collaborations with several film directors. From there came the need of her own film, Nana. The XVII edition of the international film students meeting will run from Monday 24th to Friday 28th September 2018
The XVII edition of Nest. Film Students, the San Sebastian Festival international film students meeting, opens its submission period today, 1st June. Organised by the San Sebastian Festival and the Tabakalera International Centre for Contemporary Culture, the meeting -this year renamed Nest. Film Students- offers an exchange of experiences on audiovisual subjects in the setting of one of the world’s biggest film industry events.
Nest, which will run for five days, from Monday 24th to Friday 28th September, is one of the Festival’s most important sections in its strategy to promote new talents.
The young participants screen their short films and attend meetings with professionals, workshops as well as the masterclasses held every year as part of the meeting. Last year the directors and producers Raymond Depardon, Claudine Nougaret, Todd Haynes, Christine Vachon, Marine Francen and Nobuhiro Suwa shared their knowledge with the students. Public, students and professionals watched and commented on the selection of short films, generating debates on cinematic practice and theory, the different models of production or how the film industry functions.
Each school can present a maximum of three shorts made during the last two academic years, from which approximately fifteen are selected to participate in Nest.
A specific jury made up of students from the participating schools and chaired by a personality from the film world – last year the Chilean filmmaker José Luis Torres Leiva, will decide the director to receive the Panavision Award, carrying a complete camera package including a RED Epic camera and Primo standard lenses for four weeks of filming, or a voucher worth €10,000 for renting any kind of Panavision material. Last year the chosen short was 212 by Boaz Frankel, from the Sam Spiegel Film and TV School in Jerusalem.
On the other hand, a specific jury of students from Basque schools, coordinated by a professor from HUHEZI, Mondragon University, and directed by the Development Management Department of Orona Fundazioa, will give the Orona Award with its €5,000 to the most innovative short film at the meeting. The work selected last year was Zeit der unruhe by Elsa Rosengren, from the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin (DFFB).
Projects can be entered online from today, June 1st. The terms and conditions and other information related to Nest. Film Students is available on the official Festival website, www.sansebastianfestival.com, and on that of Tabakalera, www.tabakalera.eu. The deadline for submitting short films is July 2nd.
Nest. Film Students is part of the legacy of San Sebastian, European Capital of Culture 2016.
The deadline for the registration of projects is July, 13th
