Special Project of 31st Tokyo International Film Festival Youth Section

The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF), in collaboration with Children Meet Cinema, which runs filmmaking workshops for children, will present TIFF 2018: Teens Meet Cinema, a production workshop for junior high school students, as a special project of the festival’s Youth Section, following the success of last year’s workshop. This project strengthens TIFF’s vision, Enlightening, which aims to foster a future for film and to cultivate young talent.

With award-winning director Akiko OOKU, who received the Audience Award for Tremble All You Want at the 30th TIFF, as the lead mentor, students will develop a script, shoot and edit it with professional filmmakers and crew mainly in Roppongi, Tokyo, where TIFF is held, from late July to late August, 2018.

The completed film will have its world premiere at the 31st Tokyo International Film Festival, to be held from October 25 to November 3, 2018 at Roppongi Hills and other venues in Tokyo.

Michael Franti's STAY HUMAN and Grant Korgan's THE PUSH Tie for the Audience Award for Best Feature Film

Michael Franti’s new film Stay Human tied with Grant Korgan’s The Push for the Audience Award for Best Feature Film at the 5th annual ILLUMINATE Film Festival, May 30 - June 3 in Sedona.

Stay Human takes viewers on a journey through music and the stories of some of the most inspiring individuals on the planet chronicling Franti’s experiences with people that he’s met on his travels who have chosen to overcome cynicism with optimism, hope, tenacity, music, and love.

Franti also was the recipient of the festival’s inaugural Voice for Humanity Award.  “It’s important to be able to see each other as human beings above all else,” noted Franti. “I believe that there is no one in the world that you wouldn’t love if you heard their story.”

Directed by Grant Korgan and Brian Niles, The Push tells Korgan’s inspiring tale of triumph after becoming paralyzed in a snowmobile accident where he focused on 120 percent recovery to do the impossible: push his way over nearly 100 miles in Antarctica, spinal cord injury and all.

In a feature competition section consisting of seven world and US Premieres, You Are What You Act took home the coveted 2018Debut Feature Competition Jury Prize. The documentary proposes a revolutionary new health trend by asking what influences us more: our minds or our bodies. Director Albert Nerenberg and other leading psychologists in embodied cognition demonstrate fascinating psychological exercises with amazing results. Honorable Mentions were also given to Calling All Earthlings for unearthing a hidden truth and to From Shock to Awe for social impact.

The Audience Award for Best Short Film went to Black Star, directed by Akira Chan. This short documentary explores art as a healing modality to stop the vicious cycle of addiction.

Tyler Carson Playing Violin

Living Music, directed by Libby Spears, took home the jury prize in the Debut Short Film Competition. When a promising young musician's career is almost cut short after he loses his voice to a rare medical condition called spasmodic dysphonia, he goes on a rehabilitative journey of artistic experimentation. Vision: Seeing is Believing received an Honorable Mention for cinematography.

From Shock to Awe captured the inaugural Mangurama Award for Conscious Documentary Storytelling. Including a $5000 cash prize, the Mangurama Award goes to to the most transformative non-fiction film that exhibits a strong story arc, compelling subjects and high production value. From Shock to Awe follows the journey of returned U.S. combat veterans as they abandon pharmaceutical drugs to seek relief through the controversial, mind-expanding world of cannabis, ayahuasca and MDMA, known as ecstasy.

From Shock to Awe Filmmakers on the Red Carpet

Documentary 3100: Run And Become captured the Director’s Choice Award. This sweeping examination of running's spiritual nature, follows long-distance runners in Arizona, Finland, New York City, the Japanese highlands and Africa's Kalahari Desert.

The ILLUMINATE Film Festival Impact Award went to Secret Ingredients by Amy Hart and Jeffrey Smith, which highlights through both personal stories and scientific input the role that pesticides and GMO’s are playing in compromising health on a large scale.

Danette introducing Stay Human

2018 Festival Breaks Records!

The 2018 Illuminate Film Festival, which featured 26 films, 17 panels and immersive workshops, 95 filmmakers and industry guests, a virtual reality showcase, an online Satsang with enlightened master Moojibaba and a Reel Healing with Spiritual Cinema co-founder Stephen Simon experienced an almost 23 percent increase in all-access pass sales, attracting audiences from 27 US states and 8 countries.

“This was our best festival yet,” says ILLUMINATE’s Executive Director Danette Wolpert. “It was a five-day whirlwind of enlightening stories, diverse themes, inspired thinkers and magical connections.”

The festival enjoyed a record 12 World, North American and US premieres and a record 14 sold-out screenings. New this year were the Take Twenty Mentoring Sessions and Reel Healing Online program. At Take Twenty, 13 new conscious film projects were mentored by industry veterans. 14 more projects by filmmakers from around the globe received development and production guidance from the makers of AWAKE: The Life of Yogananda at ILLUMINATE’s 3-day Filmmaker Lab. The Reel Healing Online multi-week educational web series, hosted by leaders in the field of transformation, allowed participants to more fully integrate a film’s message into their lives after the festival wraps.

Weekend spotlights drew the largest crowds, making The Miracle Morning and Stay Human, which was followed by Michael Franti’s first-ever music performance in Sedona, the 2018 festival’s top box office hits.

Other components at the 2018 festival included a downloadable festival app, and a Luminary Living Room Series with Grant Korgan and Lynne Twist, the celebrated recipient of ILLUMINATE’s third annual Conscious Visionary Award.

The Egyptian Theatre is one of the two homes of the American Cinematheque, the only public, alternative screening organization in town that offers such a wide variety of film & video programming from all over the world on a weekly basis!

The Cinematheque worked with the Community Redevelopment Agency of the City of Los Angeles to develop the historic Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, as a permanent home. It is a state-of-the-art theatre within a building steeped in movie history. There is no better screen to watch movies on!

Sid Grauman's 1922 Egyptian Theatre underwent some restoration and renovation work in 2016 and 2017, thanks to a grant from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). Original murals in the courtyard were restored by Silverlake Conservation. Watch video here.

Secrets of Outer Space: Into the Great Beyond, a short film festival dedicated to exploring outer space

A Festival Contemplates the Beyond

The historic Gene Frankel Theatre (24 Bond Street Art Center), one of only a few surviving vest-pocket theaters left in Manhattan, is hosting Secrets of Outer Space: Into the Great Beyond, a short film festival fully dedicated to exploring outer space, space travel, time travel, extra-terrestrial life, and alternative dimensions.  Ten films, each between 5 and 10 minutes long, will be selected among narrative, music video, documentary, and experimental submissions. This is an official Open Call for submissions. Please visit withoutabox and filmfreeway for details and deadlines. Festival will occur in January 2019.

Curator of the event is Lower East Side indie filmmaker Jeffrey Wengrofsky, who has released seven short films on countercultural artists and is finishing his first feature film. Secrets of Outer Space is the fifth installment of Wengrofsky’s “Secrets…” series.  Each of the Secrets programs selects ten short films on a specific topic: Secrets of the Deep: Dreams on Film, Secrets of the Heart, Secrets of the Insect World, Secrets of the Intoxicated Life, and the new program exploring the beyond. Secrets of the Deep received a rave review by Graham Fuller, a member of the prestigious NY Film Critics Circle: https://theculturetrip.com/north-america/usa/new-york/articles/experience-dream-life-films-new-yorks-gene-frankel-theatre/Cold Lips Magazine (UK) also featured an interview about the Secrets series: https://coldlips.co.uk/2018/02/18/%f0%9f%92%a5cold-lips-iii-nyc-%f0%9f%92%a5/

As the telescopes of Galileo and Edwin Hubble decentered our sense of the universe and Antony van Leeuwenhoek’s microscope first revealed life hitherto invisible to the naked eye, Secrets of Outer Space will deploy a visual device - cinema - to plumb the mysteries of that which lay outside unassisted sensory knowledge.  Rooted in the belief that exploration need not require a trip to an observatory or a ticket aboard Elon Musk’s SpaceX, this film festival will endeavor to go beyond where any film festival has gone before! Secrets of Outer Space: Into the Great Beyond, will explore space travel, time travel, extra-terrestrial life, and alternative dimensions.  Ten films, each between 5 and 10 minutes long, will be selected among narrative, music video, documentary, and experimental submissions.  ALL REVENUE FROM TICKET SALES WILL GO TO SUPPORT THE GENE FRANKEL THEATRE.

SECRETS of Outer Space: Into the Great Beyond

Jurassic World-A Fallen Kingdom: Tyrannosaurus, Baryonyx, Indoraptor, Pterosaurs Carnotaurus, Mosaurus, Thesaurus and some humans You’ve got to give it to them. Since the film is about dinosaurs, they filled the screen with myriad variations on the thematic anima/bird. Problem is, they all do almost the same thing, except with the handler, and that too when he pretends to be sad. The ‘same thing’ is making ferocious calls, and then getting into the seek-and-destroy anything ...

फेmous, Review: Nothing famous infamous Some fellow critics, when emerging from the screening of a film that tests your patience and insults your intelligence, often mutter quite audibly, “Why do they make such films?” The context, quite obviously, is not existentialist, as codified by Jean Paul Sartre and other European scholars in the 1930s and 40s. Rather, it is angst that is vented out at being taken for a royal ride. A few of those who have seen such films do not review t...

TAIPEI by Jason Lester Romance under influence - USA, first feature film 96 minutes

"Think Romeo and Juliet meets Trainspotting" - Filmfestivals.com Bruno Chatelin

Taipei%20Still%207.jpeg

Taipei is an adaptation of Tao Lin’s critically-acclaimed, cult favorite novel of the same name.

Two young New York writers fall in and out of love amidst a whirlwind of drugs, parties, technology, and travel. As one relationship collapses, another blooms for Erin, swept into the world of Paul Chen, a mysterious, charismatic author. When he proposes documenting every aspect of their new romance in an epic laptop-filmed “documentary”, the couple enter into a performative bad romance, fueled by substances and sleepless nights. Tracking the pair through a shotgun Niagara Falls wedding, an LSD trip in a New Jersey mansion, and to Taiwan, the country of Paul’s birth where the couple comes to confront their individual alienation, Taipei is a visually stunning, extremely contemporary portrayal of what it means to be young, alive, and in love in a digital world.

MOVIES THAT MATTER

Vivre (Ikiru) d’Akira Kurosawa (1952, Japon)

341px-Ikiru_poster.jpg

The 14th International Film Festival Kino Otok – Isola Cinema will be held tonight at the Manzioli open-air cinema. While hiding from the rain at the House of Culture, Marco Piccareda, author of Città Giardino, welcomed the audience with the sentence: "This is not a festival, but a warm embrace."

Tonight we will bid farewell from the 14th warm embrace of films with the City of the Sun by Rati Oneli, that among the ruins of an almost abandoned mining town in Georgia, directs a glimpse into the lives, dreams and fates of unusal heroes. The final film will be introduced by the short film Ships Still Don't Come Ashore by Ivan Ramljak. Before that, the large screens of Isola will gleam through the last festival day.

The Sunday programme started with the film Bikini Moon by Milčo Manchevski and continued with the film ★ of the Isola's guest Johann Lurf, who will present his chronological series of clips of stars from films – not film stars, but stars in the night sky, filmed from the beginnings of film history to today.

This will be followed up by Isola's new section Home, Sweet Home. Matjaž Ivanišin will present his film Playing Men, a gentle and impetuous expression and description of the fascination on playing between men in the broadest sense of the word. Afterwards, the film programme will be wrapped in the sea with Andrej Zdravič's programme of short films, Ocean Cantos. About his creative work he wrote that these are experiental films in which the protagonist is nature itself.

In Silvan bay, the Isola section dedicated to Silvan Furlan, one of the first Isola's godparents and the first director of the Slovenian Cinematheque, we will experience the Tokyo Story by Yasujiro Ozu at Art Kino Odeon. We will see the fundamental Ozu's work that has been celebrated all over the world and it is considered the commendable example of his original cinematography and one of the most important works in the history of the film.

There was also a workshop in collaboration with the association for animal assisted therapy Ambasadorji nasmeha society, where we met real therapeutic dogs. The afternoon will continue with Fresh Film Catch, films made by the preschoolers, created at film workshops, clubs and camps. The House of Culture will be screening the film Little Grey Fergie: Full Throttle by Pedro Hamdahl Naess.

The Submarine will wave goodbye with a funny and inspiring film Hobbyhorse Revolution, one of three films among which young jury members have been choosing at this year’s EFA Young Audience Awards. Before the screening there will be a workshop Movement in Cinema with Nataša Brecelj from Atelje Brecelj, where we will be able to test wooden stick horses, same as the ones used in Finland.

THE FILM SOCIETY OF LINCOLN CENTER and SUBWAY CINEMA

Announce Full Lineup for

THE 17th NEW YORK ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL

June 29 – July 15, 2018

The Film Society of Lincoln Center and Subway Cinema announce the 17th edition of the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), June 29 – July 15, 2018.

From vicious, life-destroying phone scams to balletic battles between equally corruptcops and yakuza, NYAFF offers films that reflect on contemporary society while offering extreme genre pleasures. There are self-referential takes on cinematic zombies, existential date nights, and teens finding their own corners of the world despite familial and societal expectations. After last year’s Sweet Sixteen, this year’s program is dubbed the Savage Seventeenth edition with four world premieres, three international premieres, 21 North American premieres, three U.S. premieres, and twelve New York premieres, showcasing the most exciting comedies, dramas, thrillers, romances, horrors and arthouse films from East Asia.

Savage Seventeen: The festival has a rich history of presenting films that deal with the social issue ofteenage bullying. Many of these have proven to be launching pads for some of Asia’s biggest stars, and the subject is at the root of such modern classics as All About Lily Chou-Chou, Whispering Corridors, and Confessions. In a year when youths in the U.S. are standing their ground and demanding political change, NYAFF presents the North American premieres of three films about teenagers who just won’t take it anymore: Kim Ui-seok’s After My Death, Ogata Takaomi’s The Hungry Lion, and Naito Eisuke’scompetition title Liverleaf.

More than ever, the festival aims to show that Asia is a beacon of cinematic excitement, its films as rich in provocative artistry and as emotionally compelling as those of its Western counterpart. In the age of algorithm-dictated curation and Eurocentrism, NYAFF holds two convictions: that taste in films cannot be deduced or reduced to one’s browser history; and that the best in new cinema is rising from the East.

Opening Night is the North American premiere of Tominaga Masanori’s Dynamite Graffiti, an unorthodox and sprightly drama based on the life and times of Japanese porn magazine king Suei Akira, who cultivated future artists such as Araki Nobuyoshi and Moriyama Daido. This spirited tale of sexual exploitation is an ode to free expression, proving that the so-called “smut” of today might very well become the art of tomorrow. The film is a metaphor for the humble origins of the festival as a Chinatown-born grindhouse showcase introducing the works of Johnnie To and several of the modern masters of Korean cinema.

Closing Night is the world premiere of Erik Matti's BuyBust from the Philippines. On the surface, it is structured like an action film in the vein of The Raid, with superstar Anne Curtis and MMA worldchampion Brandon Vera as narcs taking down a drug kingpin against insurmountable odds over one unrelenting rainy night. The film employed 309 stuntmen and features a wildly ambitious three-minute, one-cutaction scene. Being a Matti film, it also offers a searing perspective on the ongoing drug war and broader issues of political corruption. The director and stars will attend the screening.

The Centerpiece is the world premiere of Sunny Chan’s Men on the Dragon, starring Francis Ng and Jennifer Yu. Always central to the festival’s DNA, Hong Kong cinema demonstrates the resiliency of an industry whose identity is easily blurred with Mainland China, but on which it also exerts a considerable influence and provides storytelling expertise and craftsmanship. The film is a quintessential underdog story about a group of blue-collar workers who reluctantly join their company’s dragon boat team. A directorial debut of a veteran Hong Kong screenwriter, Chan’s film is being presented one year after NYAFF had a special focus on first-time directors from the territory. Chan and actress Jennifer Yu will be among the attending guests.

Seven films will battle in the second edition of the festival's re-launched

Main Competition now dubbed the Tiger Uncaged Award for Best Feature Film: Shiraishi Kazuya’s Blood of Wolves (Japan), Nam Ron's Crossroads: One Two Jaga (Malaysia), Naito Eisuke's Liverleaf (Japan), Dong Yue's The Looming Storm (China), Sunny Chan’s Men on the Dragon (Hong Kong), Jeon Go-woon's Microhabitat (South Korea), and Treb Monteras's Respeto (Philippines). Six of the seven films are receiving their North American premieres at NYAFF, with one world premiere. Four of the competition titles are debut films, reflecting the festival’s ongoing support for new directors.

The festival honors its tradition of presenting awards to recognize outstanding talent and filmmakers from Asia that are still under the radar in the West.

Hong Kong's Dante Lam has been at the creative forefront of the action genre for ten years, when his psycho-thriller Beast Stalker became an instant modern classic. The festival celebrates his career by awarding him the Daniel A. Craft Award for Excellence in Action Cinema and a special 10th anniversary screening of Beast Stalker on 35mm, together with his MMA drama Unbeatable and his latest film Operation Red Sea. The latter made over half a billion dollars in China to become the second highest-grossing Chinese-language film of all time, and Asia’s biggest hit of 2018. Lam attends our opening weekend to discuss his films with long-term producer Candy Leung.

This year, the festival presents two Star Asia Awards:

South Korea's Kim Yun-seok is best known to North American audiences for his role as the grizzled ex-cop in 2008 serial killer thriller The Chaser. A decade on, he stands firmly in the top tier of his country’s leading men. Like his contemporaries Song Kang-ho and Choi Min-shik, he came late to movies after a background in theater. Jang Joon-hwan’s powerful drama 1987: When the Day Comes screens, in which Kim plays the frightening head of South Korea’s anti-communist bureau, hellbent on holding back the country’s democracy movement.

Chinese filmmaker Jiang Wu's career has bridged independent cinema and mainstream success for 25 years. Two decades ago, he was at the forefront of a new populist independent cinema about big city life that transformed modern Chinese cinema with Zhang Yang's Shower. He has worked with Zhang Yimou (To Live), Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly), Jia Zhangke (A Touch of Sin), and Herman Yau (Shock Wave). Xin Yukun's part noir, part western Wrath of Silence will screen in tribute, in which his terrifying nouveau riche mining magnate falls into a trap of his own design.

The Star Asia Lifetime Achievement Award goes to Japan’s Harada Masato, a former U.S.-based film critic. He is most recognizable to Western viewers for his role as the villain Mr. Omura opposite Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai. Since his debut in 1979, he has positioned himself as one of Japan’s most unique and important directors. While he has worked in nearly every genre, he is best known for tackling societal issues such as teenage prostitution, illegal immigrants, and the role of the media. Screening in the festival are his dark classic gem Kamikaze Taxi on 35mm, the recent Kakekomi (2016), a period piece about female empowerment, and his most recent historical epic Sekigahara, about the one-day battle in 1600 that defined modern Japan.

The Screen International Rising Star Asia Award recipient will be announced at a later date.

The Hong Kong Panorama, backbone of the festival’s programming, returns with nine features, including two world premieres: Sunny Chan’s debut Men of the Dragon and Antony Chan’s comeback House of the Rising Sons. Antony Chan is an original member of The Wynners, the popular teen-idol band of the 1970s that launched the careers of mega-stars Alan Tam and Kenny Bee. Chan, the band’s drummer, returns to the director’s chair after 26 years to present a vibrant biopic that avoids hagiography. Highlighting the miracles of motion and irresistible kinetic force that are the signature of Hong Kong cinema, is a three-film Dante Lam tribute, and an action-packed thriller run on July 4: Jonathan Li’s debut The Brink, Oxide Pang’s The Big Call, and Wilson Yip’s Paradox. Also screening is Chapman To’s family drama set in the world of karate, The Empty Hands starring Stephy Tang.

The China section continues to take a more central role. One year ago, NYAFF committed to supporting the new generation of first-time directors emerging in Asia with the Young Blood series, focusing on Hong Kong; this year the festival shifts to Mainland China. Once again, the films are heady and diverse in subject matter, including Hunan-set, rain-drenched serial-killer thriller The Looming Storm, Inner Mongolia-set sexagenarian drama Old Beast (produced by Chinese auteur Wang Xiaoshuai), and the razor-sharp Northeastern comedy Looking for Lucky, which revolves around a man, his father, and a missing dog. The Chinese film industry is changing fast, and trends are best reflected in where new directors are taking it. We also present films about the shifting rules of romance: Dude’s Manual and The Ex-Files 3: The Return of the Exes.

The New Cinema from Japan lineup is represented by one of the festival’s largest contingents of directors yet. In addition to NYAFF’s tribute to veteran director Harada Masato, the festival is bringing a group that could be described as defining a “new wave” of Japanese cinema: Naito Eisuke with his circle-of-revenge drama Liverleaf, Ogata Takaomi with experimental youth drama The Hungry Lion, Takeshita Masao with slow-burn drama The Midnight Bus, and Kanata Wolf with his slacker debut Smokin’ on the Moon. Also attending is actor Emoto Tasuku who brings his mischievous charm to the protagonist of porn publishing odyssey Dynamite Graffiti. Other highlights include Sato Shinsuke’s cross-generational superhero showdown Inuyashiki, Ueda Shinichiro’s meta zombie film homage One Cut of the Dead, and Yukisada Isao’s brutal youth drama River’s Edge.

There are ten films in the South Korean Cinema section. This year, female-directed titles represent almost half of the NYAFF selection. They include Jeon Go-woon’s competition title Microhabitat, Yim Soon-rye’s Little Forest, and Jeong Ga-young’s Hit the Night. Actress and director Jeong’s positioning of herself as a female Hong Sang-soo—she recently starred in and directed Bitch on the Beach—is itself a critique of the macho posturing of much of South Korean cinema.

The festival selected five films showcasing the uniqueness of Taiwan cinema and the strength of both its arthouse productions and its genre output. Of note is the North American premiere of gangster film Gatao 2: Rise of the King, poised comfortably between classic yakuza and triad movies from Japan and Hong Kong. In complete contrast is The Last Verse, which charts a romantic relationship through the turbulence of three presidential eras; it was directed by Tseng Ying-ting, one of Taiwan cinema’s freshest voices since Edward Yang.

This year’s program features the largest Southeast Asian Vanguard selection yet, representing a fifth of the festival lineup. This region is one of the most creative corners of Asia, which NYAFF continues to champion in the film selection and guest lineup. Outside of Asia, arguably no other film event has so fully committed to exploring Southeast Asian cinema, which is at the heart of the festival’s future. Six films from the Philippines, three films from Thailand, two films from Malaysia, and one film from Indonesia will screen.

The festival goes all-in on the Philippines with the largest lineup in NYAFF since 2013. Three strong films examine the nation’s ongoing drug war: Mikhail Red's Neomanila, about a "mother-and-son" death squad; Treb Monteras'Respeto, set in the milieu of rap battles; and Erik Matti’s BuyBust. There will also be a special screening of Matti’s thriller On the Job. On opening night, NYAFF hosts the world premiere of Richard Somes’s brutal We Will Not Die Tonight, starring Erich Gonzales as a stuntwoman trying to survive a single night. On a lighter note, Irene Villamor’s blockbuster (anti-) romance Sid & Aya (Not a Love Story) screens, also starring Anne Curtis from BuyBust.

There has been a recent Malaysian New Wave reflecting the country’s societal and political changes, and it is only now reaching our cinema screens. NYAFF presents two films that would never have seen the light before 2018: police corruption thriller Crossroads: One Two Jaga and black magic thriller Dukun. The latter is the long-buried debut of top Malaysian director Dain Said, screening twelve years after its shoot was completed. Together with Brutal/Jagat (NYAFF 2016), these films hint at why Malaysian cinema is a territory to watch.

Southeast Asian Westerns: The links between the western genre and Japanese cinema are well documented, from remakes of Akira Kurosawa's classics to Lee Sung-il's own remake of Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven. But the western was also a genre embraced in Southeast Asia for decades, most recently with two Indonesian films: Mouly Surya's Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts (which opens in New York on June 22) and Mike Wiluan's Buffalo Boys, which screens on the final day of the festival. Like their Northeast Asian counterparts (the Manchurian western), the genre offers tales of freedom and emancipation with Eastern heroes rising against their colonial oppressors. This year, Wisit Sasanatieng’s madcap Tears of the Black Tiger returns in a special 35mm screening.

Young Art at NYAFF: “Safe Imagination Is Boring”

“Safe Imagination Is Boring” is a group exhibition of 10 emerging artists who have created new work inspired by Asian cinema. The exhibition features Asian, second-generation Asian-American, and mixed-race artists.

HBO® Free Talks at NYAFF

This year, NYAFF presents several free talks, sponsored by HBO®, at the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center’s Amphitheater. They include opportunities for NYAFF audiences to meet festival guests from Japan, China, and Southeast Asia and discuss their careers, trends, and regional genre cinema. Guest speakers include Harada Masato, Dong Yue, Xin Yukun, Erik Matti, and Mike Wiluan.

The New York Asian Film Festival is co-presented by Subway Cinema and the Film Society of Lincoln Center and takes place from June 29 to July 12 at the Film Society’s Walter Reade Theater (165 West 65th St), and July 13 to 15 at SVA Theatre (333 West 23rd St). It is curated by executive director Samuel Jamier, deputy director Stephen Cremin, programmers Claire Marty and David Wilentz, and associate programmers Karen Severns and Mori Koichi.

NEW YORK ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL (NYAFF)

Now in its 17th year, the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) is North America’s leading festival of popular Asian cinema, which The Village Voice has called “the best film festival in New York,” and The New York Times has called “one of the city’s most valuable events.” Launched in 2002 by Subway Cinema, the festival selects only the best, strangest, and most entertaining movies to screen for New York audiences, ranging from mainstream blockbusters and art-house eccentricities to genre and cult classics. It was the first North American film festival to champion the works of Johnnie To, Bong Joon-ho, Park Chan-wook, Takashi Miike, and other auteurs of contemporary Asian cinema. Since 2010, it has been produced in collaboration with the Film Society of Lincoln Center.

FILM SOCIETY OF LINCOLN CENTER

The Film Society of Lincoln Center is devoted to supporting the art and elevating the craft of cinema. The only branch of the world-renowned arts complex Lincoln Center to shine a light on the everlasting yet evolving importance of the moving image, this nonprofit organization was founded in 1969 to celebrate American and international film. Via year-round programming and discussions; its annual New York Film Festival; and its publications, including Film Comment, the U.S.’s premier magazine about films and film culture, the Film Society endeavors to make the discussion and appreciation of cinema accessible to a broader audience, as well as to ensure that it will remain an essential art form for years to come.

The Film Society receives generous, year-round support from Shutterstock, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. American Airlines is the Official Airline of the Film Society of Lincoln Center.

Telluride Film Festival, presented by National Film Preserve LTD., is proud to announce its 2018 Guest Director, Jonathan Lethem. The award-winning novelist, essayist and short story writer is set to select a series of films to present at the 45th Telluride Film Festival running over Labor Day Weekend, August 31 - September 3, 2018.

Festival organizers annually select one of the world’s groundbreaking artists to join them in the creation of the Festival’s program lineup. The Guest Director serves as a key collaborator in the Festival’s programming decisions, bringing new ideas and overlooked films to Telluride. In keeping with Telluride Film Festival tradition, Lethem’s film selections, along with the rest of the Telluride lineup, will be kept secret until Opening Day.

“Tom and I first met Jonathan through Criterion Collection,” said Telluride Film Festival executive director Julie Huntsinger. “Since then, we have forever been impressed with his knowledge of and enthusiasm for cinema.  We are thrilled to have him join us for the 2018 Festival!”

One of America’s greatest contemporary writers, Jonathan Lethem was born in 1964 in Brooklyn, NYC to artist Richard Lethem and late political activist Judith Lethem. His impressive body of work spans 10 novels, five short story collections, a novella, two books of essays, a comic series and writings in The New Yorker, Rolling Stone and McSweeny’s. Lethem’s first genre-defying novel, Gun with Occasional Music (1994) experimented with science fiction and crime and gained him a strong cult following. In 1999, Lethem’s fifth novel Motherless Brooklyn met with significant commercial and critical success winning the National Book Critics Circle Award, Macallan Gold Dagger for Crime Fiction, Salon Book Award and was named Esquire’s book of the year. The film adaptation of Motherless Brooklyn, directed by Edward Norton and starring Bruce Willis, Alec Baldwin, Willem Dafoe and Leslie Mann is currently in production and slated for a 2019 release. Lethem’s more recent novels include New York Times Bestseller The Fortress of Solitude (2003), You Don’t Love Me Yet (2007), Chronic City (2009), Dissident Gardens (2013) and A Gambler’s Anatomy (2016).  In 2005, Jonathan Lethem was the recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship.

“From the very beginning for me, my love for literature and my love for film were splendidly mixed-up and inextricable,” said Lethem. “I always saw the two great 20th Century storytelling forms as speaking to and through one another. So, when by my great good luck I fell in with Tom Luddy and Julie Huntsinger, I immediately recognized them as being of my tribe; they feel the same resonance and have designed their wonderful festival in the mountains to reflect it. When I learned they’d involved writers I admire like Michael Ondaatje and Rachel Kushner and Geoff Dyer in the heart of the program, I was thrilled – and envious! I’m still pinching myself in disbelief that it’s my turn to play at programming the Dream Multiplex.”

Past Guest Directors include Joshua Oppenheimer, Volker Schlöndorff, Rachel Kushner, Guy Maddin, Caetano Veloso, Michael Ondaatje, Alexander Payne, Salman Rushdie, Peter Bogdanovich, B. Ruby Rich, Phillip Lopate, Errol Morris, Bertrand Tavernier, John Boorman, John Simon, Buck Henry, Laurie Anderson, Stephen Sondheim, G. Cabrera Infante, Peter Sellars, Don DeLillo, J.P. Gorin, Edith Kramer and Slavoj Žižek.

The Guest Director program is sponsored by FilmStruck, Turner’s subscription on-demand service that offers film aficionados a comprehensive and constantly refreshed library of films including an eclectic mix of contemporary arthouse, indie, foreign, cult and classic Hollywood films. FilmStruck is the exclusive streaming home to the Warner Bros. classic film library and the Criterion Collection. FilmStruck was developed by Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and is managed by TCM in partnership with Warner Bros. and the Criterion Collection.
