San Sebastian Festival presents its new graphic identity

0
0

The Tabakalera International Centre for Contemporary Culture hosted the presentation of the San Sebastian Festival's new image and the sections posters for its 66th edition. The graphic identity revamp has the goals to update the brand and increase its visibility; the San Sebastian studio TGA, author of both the new image and the posters, has chosen to use a conch shell of more synthetic lines and greater visual punch to announce a modern Festival, constantly renovated and adapted to a changing context.

The posters for all of the sections, dominated by energy, light and liveliness, share a same graphic treatment and identity combining photography and illustration to lend an overall feeling of harmony and consistency. Furthermore, each section maintains its identity with a characteristic colour. The Official Selection poster will be presented at a later date, pending the confirmation of image rights.

The logo is composed of the conch shell, the acronym – for which the Helvetica font was used – and the Festival name in three languages (Basque, Spanish and English).

The design studio from San Sebastian, TGA, headed by Nagore García Pascual, Julen Cano Linazasoro and Txema García Amiano, combines the fields of graphic and interactive design, architecture and interior design. During their fifteen years of existence, their amalgamation of functionality and aesthetics and their characteristic visual language has shaped the identity of Donostia Kultura, Fundación Kutxa, Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola and the Aquarium. Among their posters are those created for the 75th anniversary of the Classical Music Fortnight, the 2017 Concha Flag rowing competition, the staging of Midsummer Night's Dream or the image of Culinary Zinema at the last edition of the Festival.

José Luis Rebordinos, forwarded some of the keys to the edition, its consolidated pledge to the industry and new talent and the excellent situation of Basque and Spanish cinema, also mentioning the challenges faced by the Festival, such as opening of the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola and turning the spotlight on women filmmakers.

img_27733.jpg

NEW DIRECTORS

Two impersonal faces, upright and defiant for the section of first and second works by their makers and their new approaches.

img_27734.jpg

HORIZONTES LATINOS

A palm tree, a dog and a boy looking over a wall to prompt the idea of a double reality or point of view illustrate the section which seeks to reflect Latin American reality without stereotypes by means of feature films totally or partially produced in Latin America, directed by filmmakers of Latin origin or who set their works against the backdrop or subject of Latin communities all over the world.

img_27736.jpg

ZABALTEGI - TABAKALERA

Freestyle trampoline and the death-defying triple somersault, the most difficult swimming discipline, represent the most open of the Festival sections, where there are no rules, no limits of style or running time: shorts, medium-length, full-length, fiction, non-fiction, animations, series, audiovisual installations, new discoveries and contemporary classics.

img_27735.jpg

PERLAK

The poster plays with the idea of special pieces, a grid featuring birds on square, triangular or circular pedestals, for a section where the jury is the audience and the films competing for the award already have the backing of critical acclaim and/or accolades at other festivals.

img_27738.jpg

NEST. FILM STUDENTS

The pure enthusiasm of childhood, added to their imagination and talent free from obstacles of the mind, represents the Festival's competitive short film section, signed by students from film schools all over the world, this year renamed 'Nest', a word suggesting a phonetical play on the word 'next'.

img_27737.jpg

CULINARY ZINEMA

In the forefront, two Japanese chefs slice ingredients; in the background, a camera. These are the two angles of Culinary Zinema, a section presenting fiction and non-fiction films looking at gastronomy and food from fields including education, science, agriculture or the restaurant world in general, accompanied by themed dinners.

img_27739.jpg

RETROSPECTIVE

The image of the British director and screenwriter Muriel Box and the characteristic closing of one eye to obtain a clearer view when looking through the camera preside over the poster for the retrospective, which plays with illustration in the part of the cinematographic equipment.

For the UN, Cannes is an Opportunity to Show More Than Film

0
0

On Sunday evening, the International Emerging Film Talent Association honoured the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) with an event dedicated to raising awareness and support for refugees. Cannes is just one out of multiple stops on the UNHCR’s “world tour". The tour's program is designed to show solidairty with refugees and to share testimonials of now-settled refugees. From job fairs in Canada to delivering messages to young children in Turkey, the UNHCR team introduces hundreds of people to individuals like Mohammed Badran, who found refuge in the Netherlands after leaving his home country of Syria.

This year, the UNHCR brought two viewing opportunities to the festival. Earlier this weekend, the film “Beyond the Raging Sea” by Marco Orsini was shown to audiences. It follows the tale of Omar Samra and Omar Nour as they compete in the world’s most difficult open sea race. The movie takes the young men's challenge and contrasts it to the personal "races" that men, women, and children endure when escaping conflict in their home country.  In addition to the film, the Doc Corner held a screening of refugee testimonials, called “Refugees Voices in Film”.  As another method of spreading awareness for refugees, the testimonials allowed viewers to have a personal point of view on the events unfolding in the areas Yemen, Syria, and the Horn of Africa.

Pictured above, Stephen Pattinson, who runs the communciations for the UNHCR, stands with the online petition to be #WithRefugees. The petition has garnered almost 2 million signatures. If you would like to sign the petition and show your support, go to www.unhcr.org.

International Film Festival Rotterdam Hubert Bals Fund expands efforts in post-production

48th International Film Festival Rotterdam
23 Januari - 3 Februari 2019

New collaboration between IFFR and Netherlands Post production Alliance (NPA)

International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR)’s Hubert Bals Fund (HBF) continues to extend the ways in which it supports independent film. By entering a partnership with the newly founded Netherlands Post production Alliance (NPA), the HBF is creating new pathways along which quality world cinema can find its way to the Netherlands.

The Hubert Bals Fund was founded in 1988 to support remarkable feature film projects by innovative filmmakers from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and parts of Eastern Europe. It provides grants at various production stages, which often end up playing a crucial role in enabling filmmakers to realise their projects. This collaboration with the NPA signals the HBF’s efforts to expand and solidify its activities at the post-production stage of the filmmaking process.

NPA invests in post-production of selected HBF titles

Festival director Bero Beyer: “The HBF finds that projects are in need of support in the final phase of production. And Dutch post-production houses are up for the task of delivering solutions for international independent films, with a real commitment to IFFR cinema. The new collaboration between the HBF and the NPA intends to bridge the gap. This endeavour is a first step towards further solidifying post-production support for HBF projects and quality cinema.”

Marit van den Elshout, head of IFFR PRO: “The role of the HBF will be to select, connect and present. Films selected and previously supported by the HBF are introduced to the members of the NPA, who will then support these projects and take on a role in the post-production process.”

Peter Warnier, board member of the NPA: “One of the reasons we founded the NPA is to broaden the horizon for Dutch post-production. So we are thrilled to collaborate with IFFR to direct more independent films to the Netherlands. It promises to be a fruitful team effort, benefiting both the Dutch post-production sector and international cinema.”

The Netherlands Post production Alliance

In May 2018, a total of thirteen high-end companies covering image post, sound post and VFX combined their forces to form the Netherlands Post production Alliance. The organisation focuses on the expansion of the Dutch post-production presence on the international playing field and raising awareness of the Netherlands Film Production Incentive, a scheme that offers up to 35% cash rebate to (co-)productions.

“We came up with the idea of uniting Dutch post-production during Cannes 2017,” explains Warnier. “One year later, our plan has become a reality. So it makes perfect sense to announce and celebrate our foundation during Cannes 2018 and to connect our organisation with IFFR’s funding arm: the HBF.”

HBF titles on the big screen in 2018

Two HBF-supported films have been selected for Cannes 2018: The Load by Ognjen Glavonić (Quinzaine) received HBF grants in 2012 and 2016 and was also supported through BoostNL in 2013, and Rafiki by Wanuri Kahiu (Un Certain Regard) received an NFF+HBF grant in 2016. Two other Cannes selections were previously presented at IFFR’s co-production market, CineMart: Birds of Passage by Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra (Quinzaine) in 2016 and Girls of the Sun by Eva Husson (Competition) in 2017.

HBF-supported films with recent international releases include A Man of Integrity by Mohammad Rasoulof (winner of the Un Certain Regard Award at Cannes 2017), I Am Not a Witch by Rungano Nyoni (winner of the BAFTA Film Award 2018) and Tiempo compartido by Sebastián Hofmann (winner of the Special Jury Award for Screenwriting at Sundance 2018).

The Hubert Bals Fund (HBF) of International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) provides financial support to remarkable feature films by innovative and talented filmmakers from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and parts of Eastern Europe. Since the fund’s establishment in 1988, more than 1,100 projects have received support. Each year, a rich harvest of films supported by the HBF is presented at IFFR and at various major festivals around the world.

International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) is one of the largest cultural events in the Netherlands and one of the biggest audience-oriented film festivals in the world, offering a high quality line-up of fiction and documentary feature films, short films, exhibitions, performances, masterclasses and talkshows. IFFR actively supports new and adventurous filmmaking talent through numerous industry initiatives including co-production market CineMart, through the BoostNL and Propellor initiatives, its Hubert Bals Fund and Rotterdam Lab.
IFFR's 48th edition takes place from Wednesday 23 January to Sunday 3 February 2019. More information can be found at IFFR.com.

50e ANNIVERSAIRE DE LA QUINZAINE

An Okay Undercover Story

0
0

When the first scene begins to roll in Blackklansmen, I was surprised when, showing a scene from classic movie Gone With the Wind, a man comes in spouting out a white power message, but bloopers included. Then the title shows up after it with a specially funny subtitle that solidifies the fact that this was in fact going to be a comedy. Not that this wasn't told ahead of time, but I didn't know and it made for an interesting movie watching experience.  The tone was really surprising because the subject matter was so dark, racism being the core conflict in this movie, yet the movie was serious when it needed to be, yet I thought it wasn’t as captivating as a could have been.

All around the cast gave good performances, the main actor John David Washington was also good, while not mind-blowingly fantastic he did have a fun energetic performance and a good sense of comedic timing that helped in what was the funniest scene in the movie over all. Also I really loved Adam Driver's performance as a serious monotoned cop because he was really funny doing it and it wasn’t something I expected from him.Spike Lee also did a good job of defining the movie, its tone and how it was edited.

The places where the movie doesn't shine though is character development, while Ron Stallworth (Washington) character is changed by a black power rally at the start of the movie, he really stays the same over the course of the movie, nothing changes after that. In the climax of the film he doesn't change their either. After becoming more active in being black (the focus of the rally) his character never evolves further, in a sense, his character development is finished within the first act of the movie.

This issue is also seen with Adan Driver's character Slick, while he was played well, the story never really finished with his development. When the investigation starts planning near the beginning, the audience finds out that Slick is Jewish, later after Slick is forced to lie and say the holocaust was a good idea to convince a KKK member of his beliefs, Slick is shaken and explains that to Ron that he didn't really dwell on his heritage growing up. After that the whole development is  abandoned for the story. The third act of the movie, while interesting, is quick and doesn't really last long, watching it, I barely registered that it was the climax.

I think the film's main goal, I believe, was to preach the message that the KKK is still a racist cult that is to this day, a real threat. It managed that while also being great in its comedy and at least worth it to see it once.

Wine Tasting Party for festivals Directors is rescheduled at Estonian Pavilion 117 no BOAT - Lady Jersey no Show

Due to weather forecast the boat party had to be cancelled by the organizers of the "Techinkart boat" and Le Studio d'imagination; who mishandled us and cancelled our event a day before the event after written approval .

It s my 31st Cannes and the only times where things have been hard for me were when dealing with unreliable "party organizers", outsiders from our industry. I realize it s a hard business but always trouble.

I wish here to express my gratitude to our good friends at the  Estonian Pavilion  (Eda Koppel From Estonian Film Institute and team) who helped us OUT.
