Tonight’s film Leto (L’Ete) will whisk the audience back to 80’s Leningard Russia, Modern-Day St. Petersburg, where the underground rock scene was very popular and it’s here that Viktor Tsoi arrives with the desire to become famous. He meets his idol, Mike and his wife Natasha, and they help Viktor become well-known and make his name unforgettable. The Director Kirill Serebrennikov will be unable to attend the showing tonight as he is under house arrest in Russia, but he is not forgotten as supporters in the Russian film community stand up for the man’s character. The film stars Teo Yoo, Irina Starshenbaum and Roman Bilyk.

(Library of Ingram Bergman)                                                             (Living Room of Ingram Bergman)

The year 2018 marks 100 years since the birth of Ingmar Bergman.

The consortium of Swedish Film Commissioners and the Swedish Institute, along with the Norwegian Film Commissioners, celebrates this esteemed anniversary by turning their Pavilion in Cannes into a copy of Bergman’s Home at Fårö.

Walk into the Pavilion, and enter Bergman’s sun-drenched library; turn another way and you are in his living room. Relax on furniture inspired by the home and Bergman’s life.

Designer Marie Strömberg, along with Photographer Brian Predstrup, and Students from "Product Development with Furniture Design” at Jönköping University and “Capellagården” in Sweden have turned the plain white walls and space into an homage to the iconic filmmaker.

The students have interpreted Bergman’s life-work in a collection of seven unique pieces of furniture, all with a strong story connected to Bergman’s creation and person. There is also an interactive film installation and timeline of Bergman’s life and work.

You can see the Bergman exhibition “Smultronstället” (Wild Strawberries) at the Village International Pantiero #217 at the Cannes Film Festival 2018.

The exhibition is a part of #bergman100. A big thank you to "Stiftelsen Ingmar Bergman” and  "Stiftelsen Bergmangårdarna på Fårö” who made this possible.

Big News for Friends of Rob Stewart Announcing Sharkwater Extinction Fall release

sharkawater%20500.jpg

Rob Stewart

Sharkwater: Extinction (2018) is a thrilling, action packed journey that follows filmmaker Rob Stewart’s, hard-nosed expose of the massive illegal shark fin industry and the political corruption behind it, a conspiracy that is leading to the extinction of sharks. From West Africa, Spain, Panama, Costa Rica, France, and even in our own backyard, Stewart's third film dives into the underworld of the pirate fishing trade to expose a multi-billion dollar industry.  Shark finning is still rampant, with shark fin soup still being consumed on an enormous scale, and endangered sharks are routinely added to our everyday products, many intended for human consumption. Stewart’s mission is to save the sharks and oceans before it’s too late. But exposing illegal activities isn’t easy and protecting sharks has earned him some powerful enemies. Read More

SRFF 2019 - Submissions Open May 9
SRFF 2019 - Submissions Open May 9
NEW YORK - May 8, 2018 - PRLog -- SR Socially Relevant Film Festival 2019 (SRFF 2019) submissions open May 9 on Cannes Film Festival Croisette. The sixth edition of SRFF will take place from March 15-21, 2019 at Cinema Village and neighboring venues. The Narrative Features, Documentaries, Narrative and documentary shorts, a script competition, VR/ 360º films and a number of Industry workshops and panels program offers filmmakers and audience members many opportunities.

SRFF favors the films submitted via Filmfreeway.com and WithoutaBox.com with a very small percentage of curated shorts in support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and specifically SDG 5 (gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls). Some are from the UN Media Partnership, and others from organizations that advocate social issues.

The festival invariably programs Q&A sessions between visiting and local filmmakers and the audience immediately following the screenings, some of the filmmakers whose works are screened, experts and advocates of women's and other issues are also invited. The 'Vanya Exerjian - Empowering Women and Girls Award' is the festival's staple award and in addition to the award categories, it is presented to a film advocating the empowerment of women and girls preferably but not necessarily directed by a woman. The latest winner was Dr. Ruchira Gupta of Apne Aap.

The program strives to bring together prominent industry players who have supported the festival in the past, the women filmmakers in the past selections of the festival, and international advocates of women's rights of all genders. The 50/50 rule is respected not as a quota only but rather based on the quality of the work presented.

The rapidly-growing, social-issue based festival is now in its fifth year. SRFF is a multi-faceted event that embodies the cultural values of New York and the world. SRFF 2019 will showcase close to 70 films across an array of platforms from emerging, international and local filmmakers.

Festival Founder and Artistic Director Nora Armani says, "SRFF is always in the look out for new like-minded partners and sponsors. Every year we are surprised and awed by the quality of the work that is out there and the responsibility of the filmmakers resenting their socially relevant work to SRFF."

If interested to be involved as a sponsor of SRFF 2019 and please contact the SRFF team at ratedsrfilms@gmail.org putting SPONSOR in the subject line, or call +33 (0) 6 52 61 19 62 during the Cannes Film Festival requesting a meeting.

SRFF is proud to be supported by The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Fairways Law Firm - Paris, in addition to sponsorships from the German Consulate General of New York, The Dutch Consulate General, and organizations such as NAASR, St. Leon Armenian Church, AGBU Performing Arts, AIWA NJ and Armenian Network of America. The Reviews Are In… “Sorry Angel”

A love story between almost 40-year-old Jacques and young student Stuart, “Sorry Angel” has earned glowing reviews from the press. Described as one of Christophe Honoré’s best works, the film has transfixed reviewers with its characters, storyline, and aesthetic. Below is a sample of what critics have to say about “Sorry Angel”:

“A radiant new film. Vibrant and Moving. A complex dynamic that Honoré teases out with warmth, and intelligence and more than a dash of mischief. Both leads give luminous, deeply nuanced performances; it’s a pleasure to watch them fuss and flirt, then figure their way into something more meaningful. There’s also a generosity, a compassion here that feels more profound than usual.”

    – JOHN FROSCH, THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

“A deeply felt crossover drama about two gay men wrestling with incompatible ideas of love… A sincere portrait of modern love a major stride in the treatment of gay relationships”

     -PETER DEBRUGE, VARIETY

“A bittersweet marvel. Beautifully renders a poignant moment in gay history… A rich and tghoughtful romantic drama that is less about politics than it is about matters of the heart.”

     –RICHARD LAWSON, VANITY FAIR

“The most emotional and understated work from French director Christopher Honoré is a touching tribute to the art and culture of early ‘90s France, charting creative obsessions young and old, strikes a note that’s life-affirming and melancholic.”

     –ERIC KOHN, INDIEWIRE

“‘Sorry Angel’ is one of Honoré’s best. Love, death, time, desire, all that, a very adult drama. Vincent Lacoste & Pierre Deladonchamps among the best performances we’ll see this fest. La tendresse, quoi.”

     –JONATHAN ROMNEY, FILM COMMENT

“This eloquent and expressive gay romance from Christophe Honoré is one of the director’s achievements. Well, as you can probably guess from this somewhat hackneyed (re)introduction, Honoré’s back, baby, and his new film, ‘Sorry Angel’, sees him newly invigorated and [mobilizing] all of his qualities as a maker of droll, quietly affecting and perceptive human dramas… ‘Sorry Angel’ is an affirmative and sometimes jubilant film.”

A Story in Threes

An Iranian film, Se Rokh, or Trois Visages, or Three Faces is described as follows, "Three actresses at different stages of their career. One from before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, one popular star of today known throughout the country and a young girl longing to attend a drama conservatory." The director is Jafar Panahi, and unfortunately he is being detained by the Iranian government on the grounds of making "anti-Iranian propaganda" and even though people like Asghar Farhadi, director of Everybody Knows, has pleaded with the goverment to let him come to Cannes, it is unlikely he will attend the event. It will be held tonight at the Grand Theatre Lumiere at 21:30.
