Adding to the previously announced five titles, the Black Nights Film Festival announces 11 others that will be part of the First Feature Competition programme, including Brazil’s candidate for the Academy Awards.

Entering it’s third year, the First Feature Competition is an international competition programme for first-time feature directors that will see a six-member jury handing out the award for best film and two special jury awards for outstanding achievements in whichever category the jury deems worthy of complimenting.

According to Tiina Lokk, the head of programme of the festival, a standout quality of this year’s selection is the maturity of the authors, both in terms of how they handle their topics, how they generalise and how they apprehend the whole of the film. ‘It has less of the youthful bravado than previous years, being more mature and balanced. Although we have managed to get great debuts every year, I believe the programme as a whole has made a qualitative step forward.’

‘But it is also a somewhat calmer and inward looking year, as fierce statements on bigger, geopolitically relevant social issues such as the economic crisis and refugee crisis of last year have been substituted for close relations, the overcoming of generational differences, forgiveness and finding each other’, she added.

Having made an impressive career as an editor (Tree of Life, City of God, Motorcycle Diaries) and having won the BAFTA and been nominated for an Academy Award for his work on the film City of God, director Daniel Rezenda presents his feature debut as a director - Bingo. It is an ecstatic story of a man who’s driven to prove his artistic talent, becoming the most successful clown in television history, but with a hefty psychological toll. The film, based on a true story, is Brazil’s candidate for the Academy Award.

Another entry from Brazil in the competition, Neurotic Quest for Serenity is the feature debut of Paulinho Caruso and Teodoro Poppovic, a lively, satirical take on the the world of modern show business, exposing all its operational mechanisms and societal effects with intelligent glee. The story centers on an A-level film and a TV actress reaching her career’s first psychological crisis after receiving an encrypted letter from her ghostwriter.

Icelandic director-scriptwriter Guðrún Ragnarsdóttir’s opens the world of children and their fantasies with a delicate and imaginative touch in Summer Children, a tale that is set in the 1970’s and based on personal experiences. A pair of siblings, five and six years old, are sent to a countryside summer camp after their parents’ divorce. What was supposed to be a temporary solution drags on for longer than anticipated, up to the point where the children start to plan an escape from the repressive institution.

Having already visited several festivals with his documentaries and short films, Macedonian director-scriptwriter Gjorce Staverski offers a satirical critique of Eastern European “cowboy capitalism” in his black comedy Secret Ingredient. It is a tale about a train mechanic who uses a mob cannabis delivery he found on a decommissioned train to secretly relieve the pain of his cancer-suffering father. The project won the VFF highlight pitch award at the Berlinale talents market.

In Sunbeat directors and sisters Clara and Laura Laperrousaz create a deceptively sublime picture of a French family living in a sublimely scenic and rural part of Portugal, however, traumatic wounds that their parents have been suppressing gradually start coming to light, dangering the equilibrium of the family in the process.

Setting his film in Brussels, often dubbed as the mecca of radical islam in Europe director
Guérin van de Vorst studies people living on the fringes of society - the most likely groups to violently react to what they can’t understand or disagree with in the world. The Faithful Son is an character-driven tale of a father who is desperately trying to build the bridges that were burned between him and his son during the time he was imprisoned.

German director Isabel Prahl studies a case of European hikikomori as she offers portrait of a family sliding gradually into disarray after the 18-year-old son isolates himself in his room in Different Kinds of Rain. The mother, father and daughter each have their own way of reflecting, offering a multi-angled perspective on the disruption that a closed door can create.

In Nearest and Dearest the 27-year-old director and scriptwriter Ksenia Zueva offers a bleak yet heartfelt insight into a Russian urban family on the verge of breaking up. Through studying the stories of each of the family members sharing a small flat she has created a portrait of a family nearing dysfunctionality, while constantly offering acute reflections on the status quo of the surrounding society in general.

Drawing some creative ideas and themes from Chekov’s classic play of the same name and rearranging them playfully for his own purpose, Turkish director-scriptwriter Erkan Tunç presents his ‘dramedy’ The Seagull, that has already seen some success at domestic festivals, winning an award for its imaginative script at Ankara Film Festival. The film studies the silent clash of urban/liberal and rural/conservative Turkeys in the affairs of two couples on a remote chicken farm.

Having personally spent years in the ultra orthodox Jewish town Bnei Berak, director Yehonatan Indursky offers a rare insight into the marginal spheres of Israeli society in Driver. Ruzumni works as a driver, taking people who need money from one wealthy member of the community to the next. The aim of the visits is to get as much money as possible. Ruzumny teaches his clients to tell stories that make listeners especially generous. He does this while trying to raise his daughter as a single father.

Having a background in directing for TV Shows and commercials (including an award-win at Cannes Lions) Yukihiro Morigaki’s debut Goodbye, Grandpa! is a light, pastel-colored take on the dread of being a teenager and processing things like losing one’s grandfather or having an awkward family.

Films that were announced on the 20th of September:

Buddha.mov
Kabir Mehta’s experimental documentary follows a flamboyant Goan cricket player in his daily activities, exposing explicitly even the most intimate details of his private life, including screenshots of his social media feed and intimate encounters with women, thus depriving the subject of any privacy and expanding the boundaries of the portrait documentary.
The project (previously called Buddhagram) was awarded with the Facebook Award at last year’s Film Bazaar. The director has won awards at the European Media Art Festival and Ann Arbor FF for his previous project.

Home
Director Kim Jong-woo’s drama sets a rather unique premise: a man’s current and former wife get into a car accident and are both left in a coma. The man finds it easy to accept the daughter he had with the ex-wife, but a more problematic issue is the boy - the protagonist of the film - whom the ex-wife had from a previous marriage. What follows is a moving study on the meaning of family, acceptance and having a safe place - a home. The director’s short films have been part of several film festivals, including Busan International Film Festival.

Resurrection
Representing the focus region of the festival this year - Flanders, Belgium - Resurrection follows a young man who has just murdered his companion and is united with a reclusive man who offers him a hideout. Director Kristof Hoornaert’s presents a quiet, touching tale of the repercussions of violence and of overcoming one’s past demons.
The director’s short films have been screened at numerous festivals, including Berlinale, Tallinn Black Nights, Montreal, Busan and BFI London.

The Heat after the Rain
Cristóbal Serrá Jorquera’s first feature film follows 30-year-old Julia who is trying to restore her mental balance after a miscarriage and the ensuing breakup from her companion. It is a rare case of a male director studying a female subject with subtle delicacy, offering a film that serves both as a meditative journey and a moving character piece.
The director has previously been awarded at the Valdivia IFF for his short film Todos los lugares y yo.

The Marriage
Kosovan director Blerta Zeqiri’s fascinating character study centers on two friends who were separated after the Kosovo War and are reunited on the eve of the marriage of one of them. After a successful first encounter with the friend and his bride to be, the events and revelations take an unexpected turn that threatens to alter the triangle’s current state of affairs.
The director’s short films have won awards at international festivals such as Sundance, Sarajevo and Tirana.

KLOWNS HALLOWEEN 2017
Projections - sweepstakes - quizgames - zombie appetizers - popcorn - candies

30th Anniversary - Anas Bigas Luna's Angst -
For the ninth year in a row, the horror and fantasy website KlownsAsesinos.com, with the collaboration of the Coral Society L'Espiga de Les Corts and the City of Barcelona, organizes the Klowns Halloween 2017 in Barcelona, a terrifying and fun session of good genre cinema that you can not miss. On this occasion, we have prepared an intense marathon with 4 feature films, raffles, quizgames, and in which we will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the cult tape"Anguish" Bigas Luna. The entrance to the event is free and we have bar service with drinks, zombie snacks, popcorn, etc ... Who gives more !!

1st Session 18h.
We will begin the evening with the screening of "THE NIGHT OF THE VIRGIN", a thunderous and transgressive film of dark and disconcerting tone, but with a funny bittersweet humor that advances by an orgy of sex, blood and several fluids through its particular apology to religion and violence. The film, which marked Roberto San Sebastián's feature film debut, is played by actor Javier Bódalo, who plays Nico, a twenties with no sexual experience willing to lose his virginity at all costs on the night of the end of the year. That night he meets Medea, an attractive and mischievous mature woman who takes him to her apartment. It is then that the night twists ...
Not suitable for sensitive stomachs ...

2nd Session 20: 30h.
In the second session we are expecting fun, terror and a gore feast with the screening of "GAME OF DEATH", one of the most brainless films of the year that has just participated in the Midnight X-Treme Section of the Sitges 2017 Festival. Laurence Morais-Lagace and Sebastien Landry do a nostalgic exercise to the movies of the eighties and give us a powerful genre film, made by and for fans of horror movies. A group of friends between laughter and alcohol discover an old board game called "The Game of Death". When they start to play they discover that there is no going back, and the rules are very clear (kill or die). Now they are condemned to murder indiscriminately, otherwise, their heads will explode in a big way.
Pick up your popcorn ... and enjoy!

3rd Session 22: 3pm.
The tribute of this edition will be dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the premiere of "ANGUSTIA", feature film directed by the Catalan director Bigas Luna who left us in 2013, and which we will remember through this retrospective. The film is one of the jewels of the national horror film unjustly forgotten by many. A haunting hypnotic tape of terror that plunges us into a spiral of tension and madness from another dimension. John, an ophthalmologist with a dubious professional reputation lives under the influence and extreme subjection of his mother, who through hypnosis causes him to commit a series of murders. This is the plot of the movie "The Mommy", whose projection comes two young people who will soon feel the anguished tension that gives off the story, which seems to be crossing the screen.
Watch who you have in the back seat ...

4th Session 00: 15h.
At midnight the last session of this Halloween evening will arrive, and what better time to invoke Satan with "GHOULIES II". Considered as the best delivery of the saga, is directed by Albert Band that gave greater protagonism to the small beings diabolical. A street fair is set up in a locality in order to raise as much money as possible, as it is in total ruin. Larry and his uncle, the owners of the show "The Den of Satan", to make it more interesting, make some modifications in their number. But someone, invoking Satan, has raised the Ghoulies, small beings that destroy everything ...

Sweepstakes and quizgames
As usual in Halloween Klowns, at the end of each session we will make lots of quizgames and fun quizgames about the films that will test the audience. In addition to the usual dvd's, fanzines, etc ..., this year, with the collaboration of the prestigious Horror Festival of Molins de Rei (to be held from 10 to 19 November) we will raffle 3 double tickets for the week (not including marathon 12 hours).

All this, with Bar service, popcorn, soda, beer, snacks, and zombie snacks in an atmosphere prepared to celebrate Halloween Night.

The event will take place on Saturday, October 28th starting at 6pm in the S.C. L'Espiga of Les Corts. C / Joan Gamper, 30. Barcelona. Metro L3 Les Corts. FREE ENTRANCE.

HOW TO TALK TO GIRLS AT PARTIES

30377cda-94da-495f-bb7b-13a3355d7652.jpg

ALIVE IN FRANCE

Program Highlights: Nicole Kidman, Vanessa Redgrave & Laibach in the DPRK

Viewers can expect a healthy dose of star power: In the American production HOW TO TALK TO GIRLS AT PARTIES (USA 2016) by John Cameron Mitchell (HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, 2001), Nicole Kidman plays punk queen Boadicea, the proprietor of a tiny club on the outskirts of late 70s London, while latex-clad alien Elle Fanning (THE BEGUILED) has punk teen Enn crushing hard. The film, with its wild genre mash-up style, was met with great applause in Cannes and will be celebrating its German premiere in Wiesbaden.

Abel Ferrara returns to the exground program with his most recent work ALIVE IN FRANCE (France 2017), which follows the cult director around on tour in his adopted home of France as he presents concerts and a film retrospective featuring legendary classics BAD LIEUTENANT, THE KING OF NEW YORK and THE ADDICTION. ALIVE IN FRANCE will be celebrating its German premiere in the festival’s International section.

The members of the cult band Laibach, who take centre stage in the documentary LIBERATION DAY (Latvia/Norway/Slovenia 2016), are also old acquaintances from the exground program. Directors Morten Traavik and Ugis Olte accompanied the Slovenian band on a trip to North Korea, where they made music history by appearing in concert. Laibach previously featured in the festival program in a documentary film presented at the second edition of exground on screen (as it was known way back then).

With SEA SORROW (Great Britain 2017) Academy Award winner Vanessa Redgrave is making her directorial debut. This intensely personal work brings together her own story of displacement in World War Two with the desperate situation of today’s refugees. Redgrave is supported here by acting colleagues such as Ralph Fiennes and Emma Thompson.

Seven productions will be competing for the distinction this year, including previous award winners from other festivals.

In the Made in Germany section, a jury composed of inmates from Wiesbaden’s JVA correctional facility will be awarding the prize DAS BRETT for the second year in a row. All in al, six productions will be competing for the inmate jury award.

The complete festival program will be available online from late October 2017 at www.exground.com. exground filmfest would like to thank all of its supporters and sponsors.

Cinema Italian Style Returns for the Ninth Year in Seattle

0
0

For the ninth year SIFF is presenting its annual celebration of the best of current Italian films. The week-long event runs November 9 through November 16 at SIFF Cinema Uptown, and features sixteen extraordinary features with some of the biggest names in Italian cinema today.

The week kicks off on Thursday with our Opening Night film, At War for Love, a World War II period piece mixing history with outrageous comedy. Think Forrest Gump by way of Mel Brooks—equal parts funny, charming, and irreverent.  Join us after the film for our Opening Night Party at SIFF Centro di Film (aka SIFF Film Center!) for hors d' oeuvres and artisan wine.

Highlights include A Ciambra, directed by Jonas Carpignano (Mediterraneo) and Executive Produced by Martin Scorsese, a coming-of-age drama that's Italy's 2017 Official Oscar® submission; award-winning actress Valeria Golino from Cinema Italian Style 2016, Anna (For Your Love), is back as Emma, in Silvio Soldini's (Come Undone) charming and absorbing romance; the Manetti Bros. latest Love and Bullets, a playful mafia musical where crooks really can croon; classic Italian film lovers will have an opportunity to see Vittorio De Sica's 1952 neorealist masterpiece Umberto D. on the big screen; and The War of the Yokels, a rambunctious mixture of social satire, perilous adventure, and low-key fantasy, that plays like a cross between Lord of the Flies and The Goonies.

In addition, on Sunday, November 12 at 3:00 PM, Chateau Ste. Michelle will present an hour-long wine tasting event, prior to Wife & Husband, a wonderfully funny and romantic take on the body swap comedy.

We're also proud to announce our guests for this year's festival. Francesco Bruni (Noi 4) will be here to talk about two films we're presenting; Everything You Want (director), about a man who takes a job as a companion for an elderly, Alzheimer’s-stricken poet; and Let Yourself Go (writer), starring the phenomenal Toni Servillo (The Confessions) this film about an uptight psychoanalyst whose life is upended when he becomes involved with a personal trainer, won the 2017 Italian Golden Globe for Best Comedy.

Lastly, our Closing Night film, Easy, will end the festival on a high note as our last guest, Italian director Andrea Magnani, comes to SIFF to discuss his lightly-paced, deeply observed film about a depressed man trying to transport a coffin from Italy to a village in the Ukraine. The festivities will continue after the film at Il Forniao, where you can indulge in delectable bites and affogato from Gelatiamo!

"Cinema Italian Style gets more exciting every year," says SIFF Festival Programming Manager Stan Shields. "This year’s selected films are a great mix of comedy, documentary, and drama, with messages that are both incredibly timely and universal. We are proud to feature Sergio Castellitto’s Lucky, featuring a stunning, award-winning performance from actress Jasmine Trinca; the return of director Cristina Comencini (Cinema Italian Style 2015, Latin Lover) with her delightful, female-centeric, new sex comedy Something New; Fabio Mollo’s compelling love story There is a Light; and our Closing Night film, Easy with director Andrea Magnani in attendance, followed by a fantastic after-party at the Atrium in Pacific Place (catered by the one and only, Il Fornio). We’ve brought together a great mixture of award winners and big hits with Italian audiences—I'm pleased that Seattle audiences will have a chance to see them."

Bookended by two fabulous parties and with very special guests in attendance, the week promises to be una settimana di film straordinario!

OPENING NIGHT: Award-Winning Film DALIDAa7b48485-bb23-4245-a41e-7cfa8c75601f.jpg

Opening Night will kick off with a special reception and screening of DALIDA a biopic intimately capturing the true story of acclaimed Egyptian-born music icon Dalida

The American Cinematheque welcomes the 20th anniversary of The Arpa International Film Festival showcasing international cinematic gems in the heart of Hollywood at the historic Egyptian Theatre from November 3 - 5, 2017. www.arpafilmfestival.com

This year's highlights include a diverse range of films that explore themes such as genocide, war, and LGBTQ issues. The festival will also present thought-provoking shorts, as well a critically acclaimed thriller and a French masterpiece on the life of pop icon Dalida.

Opening Night on Friday, November 3 will kick off with a special reception and screening of DALIDA, a biopic intimately capturing the true story of acclaimed Egyptian-born music icon Dalida, who gained celebrity in the 50s, singing in French Spanish, Arabic, Hebrew, German, Italian. Her dazzling 30-year career was marked by tragic events, including her very own suicide in 1987 which forever immortalized her iconic image as a diva and renowned singer.

993ec94e-8729-42e3-82f4-a007809de621.jpgOur first Saturday afternoon Centerpiece program will feature Nikolay and Sergey Sarkisov's KRASNY, a Russian-Georgian western set in the south of post-revolutionary Russia. The film tells the story of a noble woman, a red commissar and a Cossack whose paths intertwine in a most unexpected way.

34bbd0c2-a566-4d37-a2f4-28c5abfdf2be.jpg

On Saturday evening, our second Centerpiece program and reception will showcase Academy Award-nominated director Joe Berlinger's powerful documentary INTENT TO DESTROY: DEATH, DENIAL AND DEPICTION, partially shot on the set of Terry George's epic film The Promise (starring Oscar Isaac, Christian Bale, and Charlotte Le Bon). Berlinger's film takes an unwavering look at the Armenian Genocide. Historians, scholars, and high-profile filmmakers come together in this cinematic exploration of the tangled web of responsibility that has driven a century of denial by the Turkish government and its strategic allies.

Following INTENT TO DESTROY on Saturday night is our third Centerpiece program - Stephen C. Sepher's (The Heist) DEAD ON ARRIVAL starring Emmy-nominated Billy Flynn (Days of Our Lives). DEAD ON ARRIVAL, inspired by the 1950 classic noir thriller D.O.A., exposes audiences to a dark world of sex, corruption and murder with Billy Flynn's character struggling to save his life within less than 24 hours.

Earlier on Saturday, our festival goers will have the opportunity to see PINSKY, a comedy about a 4a436141-9b19-44b9-9676-5dce713ebc98.jpgyoung woman who loses her girlfriend and her grandfather in the same day and moves back in with her authoritarian Russian grandmother who is determined to marry hergrand-daughter off to a nice Jewish boy.

The lead character, Sophia Pinsky, ultimately finds her way to a weekly open mic night, where on a whim she gets on stage and discovers there's actually an audience for her Queer-Russian-Jewish-American sense of humor. The film captures the struggle between Sophia and her grandmother in an effort to define loyalty and love.

6757e7c5-8b96-4292-83d7-17bf0f1febaf.jpgOther noteworthy films being featured throughout the day on Saturday are THE LIBERATION OF SKOPJE and H.O.M.E..

Rade Serbedzija's latest film THE LIBERATION OF SKOPJE tells the story of cruelty of war, poverty and suffering during the occupation and liberation of what is modern-day Macedonia's capital city of Skopje during World War II. The horrors of war are portrayed through the eyes of an 11-year-old boy whose father is away fighting in the partisan army, while his mother develops a special relationship with a German officer.

H.O.M.E. is a film woven of two stories exploring urban alienation and meaningful encounters 02c225af-9e7f-4517-bdd6-cd112e313d74.jpgthrough the lens of a disconnected city in constant motion. One story revolves around a young man with Asperger Syndrome who seeks refuge in the underground labyrinth of NYC. The other follows a gambling Ecuadorian livery driver & a Chinese woman desperate to get

home to her sick child.

Highlights from Sunday's lineup include three social impact films- feature film APRICOT GROVES, and documentaries HELENA'S LAW & THE HEART OF NUBA - all of which bring much needed awareness to LGBT issues, atrocities in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan and the essence of good and evil.

APRICOT GROVES is a beautiful LGBTQ-inflected film about family, faith, 8cf99a45-e964-4dc3-ad5b-dfb3933a2cd4.jpgbrotherhood, and love. The debut feature was written and directed by Tehran-based Pouria Heidary Oureh, who masterfully tells the story of a transmasculine young man by the name of Aram who travels to Armenia from the United States where he has lived all his life. Aram finds himself in Armenia to propose marriage to an Armenian girl he met in America. He and his brother hit the road between Armenia and Iran, with the film skillfully layering subtle hints among their words, looks, and deeds.

HELENA'S LAW is a Czech documentary focusing on a police officer, as well as other key players in a case. The resulting film is a mosaic that says less about the case or its background than it does about the people who exist on the edge of the law, 10e78d49-dc6a-4938-8b57-592de0f55b3c.jpgand about their thoughts and motivations. Filmmaker Petra Nesvačilová finds herself acting in her movie, leading her to consider questions related to the essence of crime and of good and evil in general.

Kenneth A. Carlson's powerful THE HEART OF NUBA profiles the courageous and selfless efforts of Dr. Tom Catena, the sole doctor of a million patients in the war-torn Nuba Mountains of Sudan. Last June Tom Catena was recognized as Time Magazine's Top 100 Most Influential People. The film's executive producer is Maria Shriver.

SUNDANCE INSTITUTE'S CREATIVE DISTRIBUTION FELLOWSHIP

Now accepting applications for films preparing for a 2018 or early 2019 release who are open to a creative release - i.e. without a traditional distributor.

The Fellowship includes grant funds, access to premium pre-negotiated distribution deals, and connections to experienced industry mentors with the Institute's Creative Distribution team playing a strategic advisory role. We're currently engaged in the Fellowship's pilot year, and supporting two films: Columbus, a fiction feature; and Unrest, a documentary. Both films have excelled with the framework provided by the Fellowship and we are thrilled with the results. Case studies will be finalized on each film in early 2018.

We are seeking films at all budget levels featuring distinctive, singular voices. We will select three or four films on a rolling basis, and we will support fellows during their initial release period (6 - 12 months). Films will be selected by a committee comprised of the Creative Distribution team along with key representatives from the Institute's Feature Film, Documentary, and Festival programs.

To sign up and apply (no application fee): http://applications5.sundance.org/

The first Budapest Classics Film Marathon will run between 2-5 November 2017

0
0

Between 2-5 November 2017, the first Budapest Classics Film Marathon will take place in the city’s oldest and most prestigious film theatres: the Uránia National Film Theatre and Corvin Cinema and also in the Budapest French Institute. This January, the Hungarian National Film Fund took over the Film Archive. Following a reorganization the Hungarian National Film Archive is now presenting a four-day festival of international film classics in Budapest.

Celebrating its 60th anniversary, the Archive houses more than seventy thousands films, half a million images, more than ten thousand film posters set and costume designs, and a million pages of documentations. The Fund launched a ten-year programme for the restoration of Hungary’s film heritage. In the first year, the following films were selected for preservation: the complete oeuvre of the ingenious director Zoltán Fábri, Géza Radványi’s 'Somewhere in Europe' (Valahol Európában), Ildikó Enyedi’s 'My Twentieth Century' (Az én huszadik századom) along with the animated films of Attila Dargay.

To celebrate its 60th anniversary, the Archive is organizing the 1st Budapest Classics Film Marathon, to exhibit some of its closely guarded treasures to the wider public and international professionals.

The event will focus on newly restored Hungarian and international film classics, the history of the Archive and its activities. During the Marathon, to mark the occasion of his 100th birthday, the audience can see five digitally remastered Zoltán Fábri films. This series will open with 'Merry-Go-Round'. According to György Ráduly, the director of the Archive: "In May, the digitized version of 'Merry-Go-Round' was screened in Cannes Classics with great success, and international film professionals all praised our great classic." It is time to rediscover the famous films by Fábri which might be more beautiful now than at their original premiere. During the Marathon, the viewers can see Géza Radványi’s two films on the big screen again: 'Somewhere in Europe' and 'Girls in Uniform' (Lányok egyenruhában) starring Romy Schneider and Lilli Palmer. Famous Hungarian comedies, such as 'Hyppolit the Butler’ and ’That Happened in Budapest’ will take us to the early years of the talkies.

Within the program of the Budapest Classics Film Marathon the Archive will also screen thematic selections from its collection. The program called Hungarian World Classics. Mihály Kertész’s - who later became known as the Oscar-winning Michael Curtiz -  'Last Dawn' (Utolsó hajnal) was made in Budapest 100 years ago. Two other directors who made a career in Hollywood will also have their films shown in this program: two films from André De Toth (Tóth Endre) - his film, 'Two Girls on the Street′ (Két lány az uccán) will be screened on 35 mm from a restored version which is an endowment of Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Foundation. His later film, 'Play Dirty′ (Piszkos Játék) starring Michael Caine will be screened from the Film Archive’s own copy. The film 'The Red Shoes′, made by Emeric Pressburger (Pressburger Imre) and Michael Powell is known as Scorsese’s favourite film. Along with the screening Charles Drazin, the famous British film historian will have a lecture about the unusual origin of the film. Several filmmakers in the Austro-Hungarian Empire were forced to go into exile. The Marathon will show two hilarious Hollywood comedies. The script of Ernst Lubitsch’s 'To Be or Not To Be′ (Lenni vagy nem lenni) was written by Menyhért (Melchior) Lengyel, while the multiple Oscar-winner Billy Wilder’s 'One, Two, Three′ was adapted from the play written by Ferenc Molnár. The film’s production designer was none other than the Oscar-winning Alexandre Trauner (Trauner Sándor).

There are two very special screenings that can be taken as a visual adventure: these are films that were photographed by Jean Badal, (Badal János) who was also the teacher of Zsigmond Vilmos. The first is ’In Soldier’s Uniform’ (Bakaruhában), directed by Imre Fehér) the other is Jacques Tati’s 'Playtime′.

During the Marathon, a special day will be held in the French Institute with special screenings and conferences with respected international experts.

Dear Friend of the Festival,

I’m still catching up on emails so you may hear from me with a more personal reply soon. But I just wanted to take this opportunity to say a Big Thank You for your support of Toronto After Dark Film Festival 2017 which wrapped up at the end of last week.

We had hugely successful year with ten sell-out screenings, including selling out for the first time in our history our International Short Film Program!  Not to mention all the great reviews and word of mouth generated for the 50-odd short and feature films that screened as part of our 12th Annual Edition! Plus a historic number of filmmakers in attendance for lively Q&A's and social events shared with some 10,000 attending fans over nine thrilling nights.

It takes a huge community effort to deliver an independent film festival at such a hiqh quality on a relatively small budget. But once again we pulled it off for the fans and the filmmakers, and I'm so happy to have had your support in making our latest edition such a outstanding success.

Please be sure to add our next festival's dates to your calendar, October 11-19, 2018, as I hope you'll join me again After Dark for our Spooktacular 13th Edition!

Cheers!

Adam

An expose of the last King of Iran’s medical story

On January 16,1979, the Shah of Iran Mohamad Reza Pahlavi, left the royal palace, the Peacock Throne and his beloved country Iran for the last time, commencing what became a 19-month odyssey into exile. He wondered hopelessly from Egypt to Morocco, Bahamas, Mexico, the U.S, then Panama and back again to Egypt where he died furtively at the age of 60. His death had profound consequences for the future of the Middle East and the world, yet the untold medical story of the last King of Iran has to date remained a puzzling mystery. By unraveling the secrecy surrounding this critical period of history, beginning from the onset of the Shah’s illness, to the diagnosis/misdiagnosis and maltreatment, “A Dying King” exposes the main causes of the Iranian Revolution, the pursuant 444 days hostage crisis, and the adversarial relations between the U.S and Iran.

LIVING IN THE FUTURES PAST by Susan Kucera, A documentary presented by Jeff Bridges.
USA October 2017 - 83 minutes

Academy Award Winner, Jeff Bridges presents this beautifully photographed tour de force of original thinking on who we are and the environmental challenges we face. Jeff, alongside prominent scientists and authors, weave evolution, emergence, entropy, dark ecology, and what some are calling the end of nature, into a story that helps us understand our place among the species of Earth’s household. The film upends our way of thinking and provides original insights into our subconscious motivations, the unintended consequences, what to do about our fossil slaves, and how our fundamental animal nature influences our future as Humankind.

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) today announced honorees for the 2017 SCAD Savannah Film Festival, Oct. 28 – Nov. 4. This year celebrates the festival’s 20 th anniversary. Now the largest university-run film festival in the country, the annual tribute to excellence in film has screened over 100 Oscar nominated films and honored over 75 legendary actors, directors, producers, writers and filmmakers from around the world.

This year, SCAD will honor Salma Hayek Pinault with the Outstanding Achievement in Cinema Award, John Boyega with the Vanguard Award, Holly Hunter with the Icon Award, Robert Pattinson with the Maverick Award, Aaron Sorkin with the Outstanding Achievement in Directing Award and Patrick Stewart with the Legends of Cinema Award. The festival has become a distinguished stop on the road to the Oscars, hosting exclusive screenings, competition films, feature films, documentaries, shorts, animated films, panel discussions, and workshops at SCAD’s historic theaters and industry-leading studios.

Academy Award nominee Salma Hayek Pinault is a prolific actress, producer and director, in both film and television. About the American Film Market

The American Film Market is the world’s largest motion picture business event. Over 7,000 industry leaders converge in Santa Monica for eight days of deal-making, screenings, conferences, networking and parties. Participants come from more than 80 countries and include acquisition and development executives, agents, attorneys, directors, distributors, festival directors, financiers, film commissioners, producers, writers, the world’s press and all those who provide services to the motion picture industry.

Unlike a film festival, the AFM is a marketplace – with over 200,000 square feet of exhibition space – where production and distribution deals are closed. In just eight days, more than US$1 billion in deals will be sealed — on both completed films and those in every stage of development and production.

Participants may view more than 500 screenings of 300+ films – 29 new films every two hours – the majority world or U.S. premieres. Titles range from big budget blockbusters that will be released by the major studios to lower budget art and genre films recognized at international film festivals.

With 7,000 attendees, 500 screenings, 300 exhibiting distributors, and the industry’s largest Conference series, AFM is the pivotal destination for independent filmmakers and business people from all over the world.
