An expose of the last King of Iran’s medical story

On January 16,1979, the Shah of Iran Mohamad Reza Pahlavi, left the royal palace, the Peacock Throne and his beloved country Iran for the last time, commencing what became a 19-month odyssey into exile. He wondered hopelessly from Egypt to Morocco, Bahamas, Mexico, the U.S, then Panama and back again to Egypt where he died furtively at the age of 60. His death had profound consequences for the future of the Middle East and the world, yet the untold medical story of the last King of Iran has to date remained a puzzling mystery. By unraveling the secrecy surrounding this critical period of history, beginning from the onset of the Shah’s illness, to the diagnosis/misdiagnosis and maltreatment, “A Dying King” exposes the main causes of the Iranian Revolution, the pursuant 444 days hostage crisis, and the adversarial relations between the U.S and Iran.

Adrián Biniez, Michel Franco, Sebastián Lelio and Marcela Said, among others, to compete for the Horizontes Award

boletin_823_1.jpg

Seven of the twelve films selected for Horizontes Latinos were screened at Films in Progress

Among them is the premiere of the winner of the two Films in Progress 30 awards in San Sebastian, La educación del Rey (Rey's Education), first feature film from Santiago Esteves (Mendoza, Argentina, 1983), who has written and directed short films including Los crímenes (Best Iberoamerican Short Film and Critics’ Award at Huesca 2011) and has worked as an editor for Pablo Trapero, Mariano Llinás or Juan Villegas.

Seven of the twelve films come with the Films in Progress stamp, those directed by Cecilia Atán and Valeria Pivato, Adrián Biniez, Santiago Esteves, Natalia Garagiola, Alexandra Latishev, Gustavo Rondón and Marcela Said. Films in Progress is a twice-yearly event organised by the San Sebastian Festival in collaboration with Cinélatino, Rencontres de Toulouse. It was born as a pioneer formula in 2002 to support Latin-American film production through different kinds of backing for the completion of films at the post-production stage.Twelve films produced in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Uruguay and Venezuela, with the participation of Germany, France, Norway, Qatar, Spain and the United States, make up the Horizontes Latinos section, a selection of feature films not yet screened in Spain, produced totally or partially in Latin America, directed by filmmakers of Latin origin or which have as their setting or subject matter Latino communities in the rest of the world. Half of the titles in the section are first or second works.

Another of the selected first films is La novia del desierto (The Desert Bride) by directors Cecilia Atán (Buenos Aires, 1978) and Valeria Pivato (Buenos Aires, 1973), which, having landed the Films in Progress Toulouse Award, was premiered in Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Festival and has just won the Jury Award for Best Debut Feature at the Lima Film Festival. The documentary by Atán, Madres de Plaza de Mayo, la historia (2016), was nominated for the Emmy Awards, and Pivato, who has worked with directors including Juan José Campanella, Walter Salles or Pablo Trapero, won the Patagonik International Screenwriters Competition with his Project Antes y después… y después otra vez.

Temporada de caza (Hunting Season, Films in Progress 31) is the first feature film by Natalia Garagiola (Buenos Aires, 1982), who will compete in Venice at the International Critics’ Week, an independent section organised by the Italian Union of Film Critics. One of Garagiola’s shorts, Yeguas y Cotorras (2012), was selected for the Critic’s Week at Cannes.

Gustavo Rondón (Caracas, 1977) has written, helmed and produced numerous shorts later screened at festivals such as Tribeca, Biarritz, Toulouse and Havana. The most recent, Nostalgia (2012) was selected to compete in Berlin. La familia (Films in Progress 30), which was screened at the Cannes Critics’ Week and has just won Jury Award for Best Film at Lima Film Festival, brings his feature directorial debut.

The filmography of Alexandra Latishev (San José, Costa Rica) contains the prizewinning short Irene (2014) and the documentary Los volátiles, winner of the Best Documentary Feature Film and Audience Awards at the Costa Rica Festival. Medea (Films in Progress 30), which competed at the BAFICI (Buenos Aires International Independent Film Festival), marks her debut in feature films.

After numerous experiences in the non-fictional field, in 2013 Marcela Said (Santiago de Chile, 1972) directed her first feature-length fiction, El verano de los peces voladores, Films in Progress Toulouse Award in 2013 which had its premiere at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight. Horizontes Latinos will see the screening of her second film, Los perros (Films in Progress 31), after its presentation at the Cannes Critics’ Week.

Las olas (The Waves, Films in Progress, 30) is the third feature film from the director, screenwriter, actor and singer Adrián Biniez (Remedios de Escalada, Argentina, 1974), whose debut, Gigante (2009) won the Grand Jury Prize, the Alfred Bauer Award - in recognition of a film that “opens new perspectives on cinematic art” - and the Best First Feature Award at the Berlinale, as well as the Horizontes Award in San Sebastian.

Michel Franco (Mexico City, 1979) landed a special mention in San Sebastian with Después de Lucía (After Lucía, 2012), Best Feature Film in Un Certain Regard at Cannes. As a moviemaker he also won the Best Screenplay Award at Cannes for Chronic (2015). He also has a long and outstanding background as a producer: in 2015 he won the Best First Feature Award in Berlin for 600 millas (600 Miles,Gabriel Ripstein) plus the Golden Lion in Venice and a Special Mention in San Sebastian for Desde allá ( From  Afar, Lore nzo Vigas), both selected for Horizontes Latinos. Now he returns to the Festival as a director with Las hijas de Abril (April's Daughters), having won the Jury Prize at Un Certain Regard.

Sebastián Lelio (Mendoza, Argentina, 1974) has a trajectory closely related to San Sebastian. His first film, La Sagrada Familia, competed in Horizontes Latinos in 2005 after its screening in Films in Progress. His fourth feature, Gloria, won the Films in Progress Award in San Sebastian in 2012. His latest film, Una mujer fantástica (A Fantastic Woman), Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at the Berlinale, will open the section.

Affonso Uchôa (Contagem, Brazil) and João Dumans (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) jointly wrote A vizinhança do tigre / The Hidden Tiger (2014). Here they repeat their collaboration as the directors of Arábia /Araby, selected for the Rotterdam Festival official competition and winner of a special mention at the BAFICI. Uchôa is the director of Mulher à tarde / Afternoon Woman (2010) and wrote with Marília Rocha A cidade onde envelheço / Where I Grow Old (2016), selected for Films in Progress Toulouse in 2015 and for Zabaltegi-Tabakalera last year.

Al desierto (To the Desert) is the new feature film by Ulises Rosell (Buenos Aires, 1970), after the award-winning Sofacama / Sofabed (2006) and El etnógrafo / The Ethnographer  (2012). Rosell wrote and directed this story of a kidnapping and hike across the Patagonia desert to premier in San Sebastian.

Lastly, Cocote, which has just won the Signs of Life section Award at the Locarno Festival, is the third film from the Dominican director Nelson Carlo de los Santos Arias (Santo Domingo, 1985), who in 2015 shot Santa Teresa y otras historias,a radical adaptation of Roberto Bolaño’s novel 2666, screened in Toronto and winner of awards in Marseille and Mar del Plata.

All twelve feature films compete for the Horizontes Award and its 35,000 euros. The six first and second films in the selection (La educación de Rey, La familia, Medea, Arábia, La novia del desierto and Temporada de caza) are also contenders for the EROSKI Youth Award.

Ulises Rosell (Argentina - Chile)

Cast: Valentina Bassi, Jorge Sesán, José María Marcos, Germán De Silva, Gastón Salgado

Driven by the insecurity of her working situation, Julia, an employee at the Comodoro Rivadavia (Argentina) casino, gives in to the temptations of Gwynfor, a laconic man of Welsh descent, who promises her an administrative job with the oil company he works for. By the time she realises her mistake they are already well into the desert as they set out on an arduous hike across the Patagonia plain. MY VENICE HIGHLIGHTS

Annette Bening jury president was regal at the closing ceremony

In a sense everybody sees a different festival depending on choices made and the fallout of the daily agenda.
My festival started out slowly but picked up steam tooward the end.  Arriving late I missed many the films I wanted to see and didn't see any of the einners, but I did catch a few good ones.
The highlight of my personal festival week was  George Clooney's Suburbicon with Matt Damin and Julianne Moore who received a career award?
Ozu's restired masterpiece "Ochazuke no Aji" (The flavor of Green Tea over Rice) was a classic Japanese pleasure worth revisting.
The War Room (Reconstruction of the war noom in Dr. Strangelove) and "The Prince and the Dybbuk" a dazzlimg documentary on the strange life of little known Polish director Michal Waszynski  who made the prewar Yiddish classic "The Dybbuk" was a most  rewarding double bill. Frederick Wiseman's doc on the New York Public Library had certain intellectial rewards, and, finally, Errol Morris' two part Netflix documentary WORMWOOD on the execution and coverup of a prominent dissident scientist was not only an eye opener but a master class in creative abstract documentary filmmaking. Frank Olson was a scientist working on fiendish American experiments with LSD during the Cold War in 1953 and had great misgivings over his participation in these grotesque experiments. Viewed as a dangerous dissident who might expose top militaty secrets he was defenestrated (thrown out of a high hotel window) with the death being passed off as a suicide, His son spent half a century trying to unearth the truth, which he did,  but not to final satisfaction. Chilling and spellbinding.
At the closing ceremony British actress Charlotte Rampling who received the best actress award spoke of her early work in Italian cinema and won warm applause.
The awards this year were universally popular with no complaints.
The Golden Lion grand prix for best film went to the "The shape of water", a front runner all week long, by heavyweight (300 pounds) Mexican director Guillermo del Toro, not to be confused with Hollywood actor Benicio del Tofi, please.
French Director Xavier Legrand broke down in tears upon receiving a lion for best diector of  the film "Jusqu'à la Garde".
An unusual first in festival awards went to Australisn Aboriginal director Warwick Thornton for his Aussie western "Sweet Country". Other major winners include Samuel Maoz’s Israeli drama, Foxtrot, which was awarded  the Grand Jury Prize;

In a sense everybody sees a different festival depending on choices made and the vicissitudes of the daily agenda.

My festival started out slowly but picked up steam toward the end.  Arriving late I missed a number of films I wanted to see and didn't see any of the eventual winners, however I did catch a few good ones.

The highlight of my personal festival week was  George Clooney's all American satire "Suburbicon" with Matt Damon and Julianne Moore. Ms. Moore who also received a career award early in the week at a special side event.

Ozu's restored masterpiece "Ochazuke no Aji" (The flavor of Green Tea over Rice) was a classic Japanese treasure well worth revisting. An examination of an arranged marriage on the rocks saved when the overbearing upper class wife finally realizes that there is more to the taste of Green tea over rice than it's relative tastelessness. With an all time magnificent performance by Japanese actress Kogure Michiyo, the wordless epiphany on her face alone worth a hundred movies.

Hen pecked husband Saburi Shin and Kogure Michiyo in Ozu's low key marriage drama "Ochazuke no Aji" ~

"The War Room" (On the making of the set for thewar room in Dr. Strangelove) and "The Prince and the Dybbuk" a dazzling documentary on the strange life of little known Polish director Michal Waszynski  who made the prewar Yiddish classic "The Dybbuk", survived the war and then embarked on a second career as producer of international block busters at  Cinecittà in Italy was a most  rewarding double bill.

Frederick Wiseman's three hour documentary on the New York Public Library had certain intellectual rewards for viewers with patience and, finally, Errol Morris' two part Netflix documentary WORMWOOD on the execution and high level coverup of a prominent dissident scientist was not only an eye opener but a master class in creative abstract documentary filmmaking.

Frank Olson was a scientist working on fiendish American experiments with LSD during the Cold War in 1953 and had great misgivings over his participation in these grotesque experiments. Viewed as a dangerous dissident who might expose top militaty secrets he was defenestrated (tossed out of a high hotel window) by government thugs with the death being passed off as a suicide. His son spent half a century trying to unearth the truth, which he finally did,  but not to final satisfaction. The after taste of his desperate quest as Bitter as Wormwood!  Chilling and spellbinding.

At the closing ceremony British actress Charlotte Rampling who received the best actress award for the film HANNAH spoke of how she first got started in Italian films many years ago with directors such as Visconti and still feels connected to Italy to this very day. Her remarks evoked a standing ovation from the appreciative Italian audience.

Charlotte Rampling looking great at age 71 won the best actress lion for her role in Hannah, in which she plays a woman drifting between reality and denial when she is left alone to grapple with the consequences of her husband's imprisonment. Filmed largely in Italy by Italian born director Andrea Palloro.

The awards this year for a change were universally popular with no complaints about audience favorites being overlooked in favor of murky Turkeys out of left field.

The Golden Lion grand prix for best film went to the "The shape of water", a front runner all week long, by heavyweight (300 pounds) Mexican director Guillermo del Toro, not to be confused with Hollywood actor Benicio del Toro, please.

French Director Xavier Legrand broke down in a flood of tears upon receiving a lion for best diector of  the film "Jusqu'à la Garde".

An unusual first in festival awards went to Australian Aboriginal director Warwick Thornton for his Aussie western "Sweet Country". Another major winner was Samuel Maoz’s Israeli drama, Foxtrot, which was awarded  the Grand Jury Prize;

The highly popular American drama with the odd title "Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing Missouri, directed by Martin McDonagh had to be satisfied with a lesser prize, Best Screenplay, but at least it wasn't left out in the cold.

The Square - Official Trailer

The Square directed by Ruben Ostlund

Christian is the respected curator of a contemporary art museum, a divorced but devoted father of two who drives an electric car and supports good causes. His next show is “The Square”, an installation which invites passersby to altruism, reminding them of their role as responsible fellow human beings. But sometimes, it is difficult to live up to your own ideals: Christian’s foolish response to the theft of his phone drags him into shameful situations. Meanwhile, the museum's PR agency has created an unexpected campaign for ”The Square”. The response is overblown and sends Christian, as well as the museum, into an existential crisis. [Five Flavours] Ann Hui's Our Time Will Come to open Five Flavours on 15 November

0
0

This year, Five Flavours retrospective is devoted to Ann Hui, one of the most renown female directors in Asia. Her films has been portraying the changes in Hong Kong society for nearly 50 years. "Our Time Will Come," the director's latest work, will open this year's festival on 15 November.

Ann Hui's work has been present at Five Flavours since 2013, when Hong Kong cinema first appeared at the Festival. Her "A Simple Life" (2011) opened the 7th edition of Five Flavours, and her "Night and Fog" (2009) was included in the Focus: Hong Kong section. A year later, the 8th edition closed with "The Golden Era" (2014) – a film portrait of an extraordinary Chinese writer, Xiao Hong, who spent her last years in Japanese-occupied Hong Kong.

This year, Ann Hui returns with her new film, once again inspired by history. "Our Time Will Come" (2017) portrays the local resistance movement in the 1940s, and its relation to modern Hong Kong touches upon one of the most important themes in the director's works – the question of the identity of an individual in a wide, sociopolitical context.

OUR TIME WILL COME (Hong Kong/China 2017)

Ann Hui once again uses a multi-perspective narration to speak about complex relations and cruel history. She focuses the story around Fang (Zhou Xun) – a teacher who, due to a series of coincidences, becomes increasingly involved in the resistance. Thanks to the refined sound and visual side, Hong Kong of the 1940s is portrayed as an ominously empty space, hidden in the shadow of uncertainty. Joe Hisaishi's minimalist soundtrack reaches its full strength in the grand finale, illustrating Fang's transformation from a book-loving teacher to an emissary, fully aware of her identity and agency.

A SIMPLE LIFE (Hong Kong 2011)

One of Ann Hui's most renown and award-winning films is a seemingly simple portrait of the relationship between a film producer, Roger (Andy Lau), and his elderly housekeeper, Ah Tao (Deanie Ip). When the woman suffers a stoke and has to stop working, she asks Roger to put her in a nursing home. The situation becomes a starting point for painting a picture of social relations, in which traditional bonds and arrangements do not avert the feeling of alienation and the need to look for close ties outside the biological family.

The director based "A Simple Life" on real events from the life of producer Roger Lee and his housekeeper Ah Tao. The private story quickly turned into a screenplay, and Roger Lee – on of the most renown producers in Hong Kong – helped out with the project. The film marked a great return of Deanie Ip, whose role brought her a prestigious Volpi Cup at the 68th Venice IFF.

SUMMER SNOW (Hong Kong 1995)

A light, humorous portrayal of everyday struggles of the 40-year old May Sun (Josephine Siao), who tries to reconcile her professional duties and family obligations. The troubles at home revolve around the health of her father-in-law, suffering from Alzheimer's disease. After a premature death of his wife, the tradition requires Mary to take over the role of the caretaker. Overwhelmed by new responsibilities, the woman faces a difficult choice of putting the father-in-law in a home and going against the traditional values.

"Summer Snow," praised both by the critics and the audience, is one of the director's most award-winning films to date. It won Best Picture at the prestigious Golden Horse Awards, and Hong Kong Film Awards. Outside of Asia, it was also presented at the 45th Berlinale, where Josephine Siao won the Silver Bear, and the film received the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury.

BOAT PEOPLE (Hong Kong 1982)

A moving portrayal of post-war Vietnam, inspired by the conversations the director had with Vietnamese refugees, known as "boat people," when she was still working in television. The film takes on the perspective of a Japanese photographer, Shiomi Akutagawa (George Lim), who returns to Danang in 1978. He is invited by the communist government to show the world the prosperity of the newly established country. But the reality Akutagawa discovers is very different from the official slogans.

The controversial topic, which the Vietnamese government tried to suppress, cost Ann Hui a Palme d'Or nomination. The film was initially selected to for the main competition in Cannes in 1983, but under the pressure from French government, desperate to have good relationship with the Vietnamese authorities, the film was rejected and shown out of competition, as a surprise-feature.

THE SECRET (Hong Kong 1979)

Ann Hui's cinema debut is a story inspired by a murder that shook Hong Kong at the time. The head detective, Lin (Sylvia Chang) quickly discovers that conflicting statements and a multitude of leads won't bring the mystery to a simple close. Instead, the enigmatic crime leads her to the world of Chinese rituals and beliefs in stray ghosts. Formally, the clash of tradition and modernity in the British colony is enhanced by the multi-perspective narration, creating an ambiguous, multi-layered reality. Filled with the atmosphere of mystery and tension, Hong Kong is a fog-coated city full of secretive back alleys, where the protagonists are haunted by traumatic memories.

The section is presented thanks to the support of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Berlin.

The Virginia Film Festival will celebrate its 30th year from November 9-12 with a stellar lineup of more than 150 films

2017 Virginia Film Festival Set for November 9-12

The Virginia Film Festival will celebrate its 30th year from November 9-12 with a stellar lineup of more than 150 films and an outstanding array of special guests including Academy Award-winning filmmakers Spike Lee and Ezra Edelman, Emmy Award-winning actor William H. Macy, and noted author Margot Lee Shetterly.

The Virginia Film Festival is a program of the University of Virginia and the Office of the Provost and Vice Provost for the Arts.

In an announcement held today at The Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville, VFF Director and UVA Vice Provost for the Arts Jody Kielbasa announced the first wave of programming and special guests for the 2017 Festival. “We are incredibly excited to share this first announcement regarding our 2017 program,” Kielbasa said, “which we believe captures the things that set us apart, and that contribute to our rising profile on the national and international festival scene. Once again, our audiences will be able to choose from a program of extraordinary depth and breadth, including some of the hottest titles on the current festival circuit, fascinating documentaries that address and comment on the most important topics of our time, the latest work from some of the newest and most exciting voices on the filmmaking scene, and the best of filmmaking from around the world and right here in the Commonwealth of Virginia.”

This year’s special guests will include the previously-announced Spike Lee, who will be on hand in Charlottesville as part of “Race in America,” a special series presented by the VFF in partnership with James Madison’s Montpelier and its recent exhibition, “The Mere Distinction of Colour.” Mr. Lee will present his Oscar-nominated documentary 4 Little Girls, about one of America’s most despicable hate crimes - the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Church in Birmingham, Alabama that took the lives of four African American girls, Denise McNair, Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robinson, and Cynthia Wesley. He will also present I Can’t Breathe, a short video piece that combines footage of the chokehold death of Eric Garner at the hands of the New York City Police Department with footage of the similar death of the Radio Raheem character in Lee’s iconic 1989 film Do The Right Thing.

“We are honored to welcome Spike Lee back to Charlottesville and to the University of Virginia,” Kielbasa said. “His remarkable body of work and tireless pursuit of social justice make him an important presence for us any time but we are particularly pleased to bring him here in the wake of recent events that have impacted us all so deeply and that continue to fuel a national conversation about issues that deeply divide us as a nation.”

William H. Macy comes to the Virginia Film Festival for the first time to present his new film Krystal. The film, which Macy directed and stars in, is about a young man who, despite having never had a drink in his life, joins Alcoholics Anonymous in an attempt to woo the woman of his dreams, an ex-stripper who is dealing with alcoholism and drug addiction, played by Rosario Dawson. “William H. Macy is quite simply one of the finest actors working today,” Kielbasa said. “He has such a unique ability to breathe life into characters in a way that makes them truly unforgettable, and we could not be more excited to bring him to the VFF.”

Ezra Edelman’s landmark five-part documentary O.J.: Made in America, took the television and film worlds by storm with its powerful look at the case of O.J. Simpson against the context of the powder keg of racial tension that helped vault this story from a celebrity-based murder case to a watershed moment in America’s ongoing struggle with race. The Festival will present the series in its entirety, with a conversation with Edelman following the final episode. “Particularly in this year,” Kielbasa said “when we are partnering with Montpelier on the ‘Race in America’ series and when issues of race are sadly, but rightfully in the forefront of our national conversation, Ezra Edelman is a tremendously important voice to share with our audiences, and we are proud to have him here to present and discuss a project that is groundbreaking in so many ways.”

The 2017 VFF guest list will include over 100 filmmakers in all, representing a diverse program illustrating the broad spectrum of cinema.

Opening Night Film
The 2017 Virginia Film Festival will open with Alexander Payne’s Downsizing, a science fiction flavored dramedy about a group of people exploring the possibility of dramatically reducing their footprints on the world through miniaturization. The film stars Matt Damon, Kristen Wiig, Christoph Waltz, and Hong Chau in a breakout role that is already garnering her significant Oscar buzz. “This is the third time we have opened the Festival with a film by Alexander Payne, following up on Nebraska in 2013 and The Descendants in 2011,” Kielbasa said. “Downsizing was one of the highlights of my recent Telluride Film Festival experience, and embraces so many themes that are central to all of our lives today, including acceptance and environmental awareness.” The screening will be followed by a conversation with the film’s Academy Award-winning producer and Virginia Film Festival Board Chairman Mark Johnson.

Centerpiece Film - Hostiles (Featuring Director Scott Cooper)
In 1892, Army Captain Joseph J. Blocker (Christian Bale) is ordered to escort an ailing long-time prisoner, Chief Yellow Hawk (Wes Studi), and his family across hostile territory back to his Cheyenne homeland to die in this gritty and powerful new Western from director Scott Cooper (Black Mass) that also stars Rosamund Pike, Ben Foster and Jesse Plemons. Fresh from a triumphant world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, the film is a powerful meditation on hatred, and on the common bonds that can bring together even the staunchest of foes. Scott Cooper, a Virginia native and Independent Spirit Award winner for his highly-acclaimed film Crazy Heart, will be on hand for a discussion of the film on the Paramount Theater stage.

Race In America - Presented with James Madison’s Montpelier
This year the Virginia FIlm Festival is proud to partner with James Madison’s Montpelier for Race in America - a special series of films and discussions inspired by and built around Montpelier’s acclaimed Mere Distinction of Colour exhibition and its ongoing commitment to exploring its own legacy of slavery, including the recreation of slave dwellings on its historic property. In addition to 4 Little Girls, the films in the series will include:

An Outrage - This documentary by Hannah Ayers and Lance Warren about lynching in the American South was filmed on location at lynching sites in six states, and is bolstered by the memories and perspectives of descendants, community activists, and scholars, creating a hub for action to remember and reflect upon a long-hidden past.

Birth of a Movement - This powerful story is based on William Monroe Trotter, the nearly-forgotten editor of a Black Boston newspaper and his 1915 campaign to ban D.W. Griffith’s deeply divisive Birth of a Nation - highlighting the early stages of still-raging battles over media representation, freedom of speech, and the influence of Hollywood.
Confession Tapes - The VFF will present an episode from Netflix’s true crime documentary series called “8th and H” about a notorious 1984 murder case in Washington, D.C. in which a group of eight teens were unjustly convicted, and remain in prison to this day largely due to a connection to a “gang” that never actually existed.

Hidden Figures - Noted author and UVA alumna Margot Lee Shetterly will be at the Festival to present the widely-acclaimed 2016 film based on her celebrated book about the three brilliant African-American women at NASA -- Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) -- who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn (Glen Powell) into orbit.

O.J.: Made in America - Ezra Edelman’s Emmy and Academy Award-winning five-part documentary chronicles the rise and fall of O.J. Simpson, whose high-profile murder trial exposed the extent of American racial tensions, revealing a fractured and divided nation.

Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities - Co-directed by award-winning documentary filmmaker Stanley Nelson and Marco Williams, this film examines the impact Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have had on American history, culture, and national identity. The screening will be followed by a conversation with Marco Williams, the film’s producer and co-director.

The Miller Center
This year the Virginia Film Festival is again partnering with The Miller Center, a nonpartisan affiliate of the University of Virginia that specializes in presidential scholarship, public policy, and political history, and strives to apply the lessons of history and civil discourse to the nation’s most pressing contemporary governance challenges. The series will include a 30th anniversary screening of Broadcast News, the 1987 romantic comedy that took a clear-eyed, satirical look at the concept of “fake news” long before the phrase was vaulted into the American lexicon in the 2016 election. The screening will be followed by a conversation with legendary news reporter and anchor Jim Lehrer and longtime CBS News correspondent and now UVA Media Studies professor Wyatt Andrews about the concepts of truth and veracity in our rapidly-changing news landscape. This year’s Miller Center series will also feature a screening of an episode from The Vietnam War, the highly-acclaimed 18-part PBS documentary series from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick that tells the epic story of one of the most consequential, divisive, and controversial events in American history as it has never before been told on film. The VFF is proud to welcome Lynn Novick to the Festival for a special post-screening discussion with Marc Selverstone, associate professor and chair of the Miller Center’s Presidential Recordings Program.

Homeland
This year the Virginia Film Office added another impressive title to its growing resume when Showtime announced that its award-winning series Homeland would film its upcoming seventh season in the Commonwealth. The Virginia Film Festival will give its audience a sneak peek at an upcoming episode of the show, followed by a conversation with its director, Lesli Linka Glatter.

Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership
The VFF and the University of Virginia’s Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership are launching a new partnership this year with a special screening of the 1972 Michael Ritchie film The Candidate, starring Robert Redford. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion that will include political consultant and longtime CNN contributor Paul Begala, who returns to the VFF after his 2016 post-screening discussion of the D.A. Pennebaker classic documentary The War Room.

Charlottesville: Our Streets
The tragic events surrounding the domestic terrorist incidents in Charlottesville on August 11 and 12 captivated the world and continue to resonate throughout our culture in a variety of ways. In the course of the ongoing national discussion, “Charlottesville” has become a national flashpoint and springboard for conversation and contentious debate across the nation and in the highest levels of government. Sometimes lost in the ensuing and ongoing controversy is the fact that these events happened to a community and its people. With that in mind, the Virginia Film Festival reached out to a variety of local filmmakers and concerned citizens who had put themselves on the front lines throughout that weekend, and encouraged them to create a documentary that captures the harrowing events that happened here in Charlottesville, as seen by local filmmakers and residents. The result is Charlottesville: Our Streets, which is directed by Brian Wimer and written by Jackson Landers. The film features the brave and unflinching eyes and impressive talents of many members of a Charlottesville filmmaking community that has come together to tell their city’s stories through its own eyes.

The VFF and the Library of Congress Celebrate the National Film Registry
This year the Virginia FIlm Festival continues its unique partnership with the Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation in Culpeper, Virginia, presenting a series of films that celebrate the National Film Registry and the Campus’ dedication to film preservation. This year’s lineup will include the Mike Nichols 1967 coming-of-age classic The Graduate, Hal Ashby’s 1971 romantic black comedy Harold & Maude, and Charlie Chaplin’s 1917 silent film The Immigrant.

Silent Films
The VFF will revisit its longstanding tradition of presenting silent films with live musical accompaniment with a pair of programs featuring the music of Matthew Marshall and the Reel Music Trio. A special 100th Anniversary screening of Charlie Chaplin’s The Immigrant, which features Chaplin in one of his most famous roles - as an immigrant who endures a challenging voyage only to face even more trouble when he gets to America, a story all-too-relevant in today’s world. This program will also feature two more of Chaplin’s most beloved two-reelers Easy Street and The Adventurer, also celebrating their 100th Anniversary. Additionally, the Festival will present a rare treat with a late-night Paramount Theater screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1927 film The Lodger, about a Jack The Ripper style killing spree in London, with a chilling original score performed by Marshall.

Ben Mankiewicz
Longtime Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz returns to the VFF, where he will host discussions around a number of screenings including The Graduate, Harold and Maude, The Immigrant, The Lodger, and more.

The Rookie (with John Lee Hancock)
The VFF will present a 15th anniversary screening of The Rookie, the inspirational true story starring Dennis Quaid as a high school baseball coach whose career and life takes an improbable turn when he promises his team that if they make the playoffs, he will attend a Major League tryout. The screening will be followed by a conversation with the film’s director John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side, Snow White and the Huntsman) and screenwriter Mike Rich (Finding Forrester, Secretariat).

Shot-by-Shot Workshop
For this 30th anniversary year, the Festival is reviving its Shot-by-Shot Workshop, one of its most cherished traditions. Created and presented for many years by the late Roger Ebert, the yearly Shot-by-Shot Workshop offers movie lovers a rare chance to enjoy live commentary on classic films by leading film experts. This year’s presentation will be Harold and Maude, presented by Nick Dawson, biographer of the film’s legendary director Hal Ashby.

Honoring Our Veterans
As the nation marks Veterans Day weekend, the VFF will pay tribute to those who have sacrificed and continue to sacrifice for our nation with a series of military-themed presentations. In addition to The Vietnam War, this series will include Last Flag Flying, Richard Linklater’s latest film, which stars Steve Carrell, Laurence Fishburne, and Bryan Cranston as a trio of Vietnam vets who reunite to bury one of their sons, who was killed in action in Iraq. The friends accompany the young man’s casket on a trip through coastal New Hampshire, reminiscing about and coming to terms with the shared memories of a war that continues to shape their lives. The Festival will also present American Veteran, a new documentary from director Julie Cohen about Army Sergeant Nick Mendes, who was paralyzed from the neck down by a massive IED in Afghanistan in 2011, when he was only 21 years old. The film follows Mendes from the earliest days of his recovery as he learns to eat and breathe on his own to his life today with wife Mandy, whom he met when she worked as one of his caregivers. The film shows a nuanced portrait of a quadriplegic soldier’s sometimes harrowing, sometimes romantic, and often surprisingly funny life.

THE GULF Selected as Opening Film // Country Focus Devoted to Turkey //
2nd Annual Presentation of Inmate Jury Prize DAS BRETT

Germany’s exground filmfest is gearing up to celebrate its 30th edition from November 17th to the 26th, with a great number of events and screenings scheduled to take place at Wiesbaden’s Caligari FilmBühne, Murnau Filmtheater, Kulturpalast and the city’s Schlachthof cultural centre. Over the course of ten days, numerous special guests from the international film world will be presenting around 200 independently produced short and feature-length films. In addition, the festival boasts an extensive accompanying program featuring workshops, exhibitions, parties and panel discussions. The festival’s annual country focus will take a deep look this year at Turkey’s extraordinarily rich film and cultural landscape.

The festival will open at Caligari FilmBühne on November 17th at 7 pm with a production chosen from the focus program, director Emre Yeksan’s debut film THE GULF (KÖRFEZ). In this Turkish-German-Greek co-production, an appalling stench drifts in from the gulf to envelop the city of Izmir, turning the life of an aimless young man upside down.

30th exground filmfest: From Experimental Underground to International Significance

In 1990, six cinema enthusiasts teamed up to found a festival for avant-garde and underground film productions, with the express aim of providing an alternative to the dull conformity of the prevailing cinema scene of the time. Over the course of 27 years and now 30 festival editions (in its fledgling years the festival took place twice annually) exground filmfest has evolved into a film festival of an international calibre. The 14,000 guests who attended last year’s edition of the event are living proof of the unabated popularity of the festival.

According to Andrea Wink, one of the original co-founders and current member of the organisational team: “When we started the festival, of course we couldn’t imagine that we’d be celebrating the 30th edition of exground filmfest one day. I think we can definitely be a little bit proud of the fact that we’ve managed to take a festival organised on a volunteer basis as far as we have. Due to our consistently good work and persistence, every edition of the festival has been in tune with the times, as this year’s country focus on Turkey demonstrates once again.”

For their jubilee edition, the organisational team has a number of highlights in store. In an entertaining lecture entitled DOMALD TRUMP, THE ACTOR, Urs Spörri of Deutsches Filminstitut will analyse Donald Trump’s bizarre film career. With the aid of excerpts from works for cinema and television in which Trump typically appears in passing, usually doing a cameo as himself, Spörri will shed light on how the 45th President of the United States used film to cultivate his image. Under the title WHITE ZOMBIE POETRY, Ralph Turnheim, the only silent film narrator currently practicing the profession in the German-speaking world, will voice the 1932 silent film classic WHITE ZOMBIE live, with a lyrical touch and a generous portion of biting Viennese wit (see http://leinwand-lyrik.de for a taste).

German Competition: Second Awarding of Inmate Jury Prize DAS BRETT

For the second time, exground filmfest will present the inmate jury prize DAS BRETT for the best film in the festival’s Made in Germany section. The award is endowed with prize money in the amount of 1,000 euros, funded by “Die WERFT – Kulturbühne in der JVA Wiesbaden” (a cultural platform for Wiesbaden’s correctional facilities).

A total of six productions will be screened in the competition for DAS BRETT, including the comedy MISSION:LOVE by Laura Lackmann, which takes a charming but uncompromising look at a couple trapped in the stale day-to-day existence of their relationship with all of the pitfalls such a situation entails. Also vying for DAS BRETT is Lola Randl’s DO YOU SOMETIMES FEEL BURNED OUT AND EMPTY?, which the Wiesbaden festival audience will have a chance to see before its official cinema release. In Randl’s most recent work, Luisa rushes non-stop through the various stations of her life: from her job to her house, from her spouse to her lover, from peanut puffs to raw food diet. One day she is suddenly confronted by a second self that has split off from her original id – the gloves soon come off, as Luisa and her disassociated doppelgänger struggle for dominance.

The following films are also competing for the honour to take home DAS BRETT:
FOUR HANDS by Oliver Kienle
STRANGE DAUGHTER by Stephan Lacant
REWIND by Johannes Sieverts
TEHRAN TABOO by Ali Soozandeh

Not nominated for the award from the inmate jury but nonetheless screening in the Made in Germany section, are the documentary films ANNE CLARK – I’LL WALK OUT INTO TOMORROW by Claus Withopf and QUEERCORE: HOW TO PUNK A REVOLUTION by Yony Leyser, while for its part the program for mid-length productions will feature the films BLUE SUMMER SYMPHONY by Sinje Köhler, HARD WAY – THE ACTION MUSICAL by Daniel Vogelmann and GABI by Michael Fetter Nathansky.

The complete festival program will be available online from late October 2017 at www.exground.com.

New Sponsor: stadtmobil

exground filmfest is excited to announce a new partnership with stadtmobil Rhein-Main GmbH, the festival’s new vehicle sponsor. As a part of the German-wide activities of the stadtmobil group, this modern mobility service is making a great contribution to reducing CO2 emissions through its fleet of carsharing vehicles.

The 28th Stockholm International Film Festival, November 8-19, will focus on female directors

0
0

ab6f962d8384175b_org.jpg

Since 2000 half of the winners of Stockholm International Film Festivals’ most prestigious award, the Bronze horse, have been female directors. It is unique for a film festival to both screen and award women and men equally in one competition.

Stockholm Film Festival has been working hard for many years to promote female directors in the film industry. Female directors are in general less likely to get funding, which results in fewer movies directed by women.

But despite that, Stockholm Film Festival manages to present an equal starting field in our most prestigious section – the StockholmXXVIIICompetition  – without compromising on showing the most high quality films. The first movie in the competition this year is Ava by LéaMysius.

The praised debut drama Ava was nominated for four awards at Cannes film festival earlier this year, winning the Palme d'Or for Best Movie in the SADC category as well as the Palm Dog jury prize.

Ava will also have the honor of being the official campaign picture of this year’s Stockholm Film Festival.

Léa Mysius’ captivating drama follows thirteen-year-old Ava who is spending the summer at the Atlantic coast with her mother. But the summer idyll is shattered when Ava is told that she will lose her eyesight in just a few months. To live life to the fullest before turning blind Ava decides to escape – with a young man on the run.

– I’m very proud that we can present an equal lineup in the Stockholm XXVIII Competition. It’s a result of hard work. We review all films directed by women, and for that reason we manage to find fantastic movies that we want to highlight, says festival director GitSheynius.

The 28-year-old debuting director Léa Mysius will be visiting Stockholm to attend this year’s festival. Tickets for the premier screening of Ava on November 11th will be released on October 5th. After the screening, director Léa Mysius will participate in a seminar with the audience regarding the film.

The Stockholm International Film Festival takes place November 8th-19th.

Léa Mysius will be available for interviews during the festival. For media inquiries, please contact pressekreterare@stockholmfilmfestival.se.

If you haven’t already, don’t forget to apply for press accreditation for this year’s festival: www.stockholmfilmfestival.se/eng/press

The 28th Stockholm International Film Festival, November 8-19, 2017
The Stockholm International Film Festival started in 1990 and is today one of the leading competitive film festivals in Europe. The festival takes place every year in November with more than 200 films from more than 60 countries.
