The Kyoto International Film and Art Festival held a gala press conference at the stately Yoshimoto Gion Kagetsu hall on Wednesday September 6th to announce outline for its 2017 festival.
Highlighting its inclusive nature, the theme of the 4th edition will be “Movies, Art, and Everything Else.” Yoshimoto Kogyo produces the festival, which will run from Thursday October 12th to Sunday October 15th. This year the tagline of the fest is: “Kyoto: 3 nights and 4 days”.
Director and comedian Yuichi Kimura and KBS Kyoto announcer Satomi Hirano emceed the event. Explaining the theme and tagline Kimura noted, “I feel the festival is dear to the people of Kyoto and they have great expectations for it.”
The proceedings were honored to have the Mayor of Kyoto city, Daisaku Kadokawa, address the attendees. He rallied the crowd, “Let’s inspire the whole nation using the arts and cultural activities. I hope Kyoto can be a steppingstone to that.”
Film legend Sadao Nakajima, the Organization Committee Honorary President, noted, “Kyoto is the birthplace of the (Japanese) film industry. I believe this fest will lead to new creative endeavors in film.”
Ichiya Nakamura, the Chairman of the Kyoto International Film and Art Festival Executive Committee, emphasized the fact the festival will take place in many quintessentially ‘Kyoto-esque’ venues, like the Nishi Honganji temple, Okazaki Park and the Kyoto Botanical Garden. It will offer exciting events, such as a 100th anniversary of animation celebration. He enthused, “I hope visitors from all over the world will enjoy the festival for 3 nights and 4 days.”
Of the many prestigious locales employed for the festival, the red carpet walk will take place in front of the Japanese National Treasure the ‘Karamon’ gate. The opening ceremony will use the Southern Noh Stage of the Nishi Honganji temple. The Buddhist temple is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has a long tradition of supporting arts and culture so it fits perfectly with creating an image for KIFF both nationally and internationally.
Two major awards will be announced at the opening ceremony on October 12th. The Shozo Makino Award, started in 1958 in honor of Kyoto-born director Shozo Makino, is awarded to filmmakers who contributed to the development of Japanese cinema. The Toshiro Mifune Award, given to the actor who is most likely to make international impact in film, will be handed out at the ceremony.
Festival Producer Kazuyoshi Okuyama was on hand to elaborate on film selection. He noted that the festival has exciting programs and is working hard to keep improving its offerings. An animation section has been included this year. The production Sparks (Hibana), directed by the Yoshimoto comedian Itsuji Itao, based on the Naoki Matayoshi’s Akutagawa Prize winning novel, will have its world premier at the fest.
The TV Director’s Movie section, which started during the 2nd Okinawa International Movie Festival, is a collaborative effort between Yoshimoto Kogyo and many TV stations. It supports ambitious work that doesn’t fit into existing genres.
Silent/Classic Movies is a category of the festival which aims to deliver “the old but
new -- to find a path to the future by learning lessons from the past” cinema to the young generation. It provides various movie experiences, including film screenings with live narration (benshi in Japanese) as well as digital restorations of classic work.
A special section featuring the films of famed director Hideo Gosha and commemorating the 25th anniversary of his death will be presented. Tomoe Gosha, president of Gosha Productions, said, “I really appreciate having this opportunity to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Hideo’s death.”
A film program portraying the unique atmosphere of rocker Yuya Uchida will also thrill fans.
A special treat from KIFF is its celebration of classic films. Yoneo Ota, Director of the Silent Film Department of KlFF, explained the offerings. He said this year the fest will introduce timeless female artists, most prominently the queen of comedy Mabel Normand.
Kenta Oka oversees the Art Section of the fest. The theme for the art this year is “Everything is constantly born and changed, nothing is eternal.”
Each art venue will have its own focus. Kyoto Station will exhibit Nobuyuki Tachibana’s work. The Kyoto Art Center is presenting “Digital Art Battle in Kyoto” by LIMITS. The former Rissei Elementary School will house ceramics and animation. The Kyoto Botanical Garden is going to organize events by artists like Yotta and Kazuyuki Ishihara.
At Fujii Daimaru department store, the artist Stik will present “Shutter Bomb in Kyoto” and Heather Brown’s work will be shown.
Members of the Jury for the Creator’s Factory Award, Taichi Kasuga and Michail Gkinis, introduced that art program and events related to it. One of these will be the “Yoshimoto Archigram,” a recreation of the avant-garde art movement “Archigram” from the UK in the 1960s.
Lastly KIFF will produce many events around the UN program of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aims to create a more livable, sustainable world for everyone. Yoshimoto Kogyo has been working on the program for a number of years.

ANTENNA DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL October 10-15, 2017 Antenna Documentary Film Festival today unveils its 2017 program, presenting a captivating line-up of the most creative and thought-provoking documentaries from Australia and around the world. The program includes 50 films from 20 countries, three film competitions with cash prizes, DocTalk sessions, filmmaker Q&A’s and Gala events. “We have watched an incredible amount of films from around the world and have selected an exceptionally strong line-up that represents the diversity of creative nonfiction cinema today,” said Antenna’s Festival Director, David Rokach. Opening the festival is Faces Places, the latest film from legendary filmmaker Agnès Varda, co-directed with the street artist JR. In this profoundly moving film, the duo travel across rural France creating giant photo installations of the people they meet along the way. The much anticipated documentary Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami will close the festival. Fresh from its world premiere at TIFF, this intimate film is a multi-narrative journey through the private and public realms of the iconic singer and performer Grace Jones. Other international highlights include: City of Ghosts, by Academy Award nominee Matthew Heineman (Cartel Land), captures the extraordinary story of a fearless group of journalists who risk their lives to document and expose the atrocities of ISIS in their home city. Sundance Winner Dina, a funny and unconventional love-story between two eccentric, middle-aged neurodivergent souls. They are head-over-heels for one another, but shacking up poses new challenges for both. He is uncomfortable with physical intimacy, she is a Kardashians fanatic who wants to share with him all she’s learned about sensual desire from popular culture. Mr Gay Syria follows two gay Syrian refugees finding laughter and levity as they struggle through the migration crisis, being gay in the Muslim world and their hope to find a better future in Europe. Venus explores how a new generation of young women relate to themselves as sexual beings. In response to a casting call by two female directors, more than a hundred women turn up and talk straight into the camera about their erotic fantasies. Lucy Walker’s Buena Vista Social Club: Adios picks up from Wim Wenders’ landmark 1999 Oscar-winning documentary. The film follows the acclaimed Cuban band on their final tour, covering the years since they became a world phenomenon, as they reflect on their remarkable careers and the extraordinary circumstances that brought them together. As part of Antenna's commitment to the cutting edge of nonfiction, the program includes films that experiment with content and form: Brimstone & Glory, a mesmerising documentary about a small Mexican city devoted to making and exploding fireworks; Photon, an ambitious experimental film that summarises the entire history, and imagined future, of the universe; and Rat Film, Theo Anthony's astonishing debut feature, examining our culture from the point of view of the humble brown rat living in the city of Baltimore. Australian documentaries prominently feature at the festival, with an Australian Competition of feature documentaries as well as an Australian Shorts competition. Stand out feature documentaries include the world premiere of Kings of Baxter, which follows boys in a juvenile detention centre performing Shakespeare’s Macbeth, and the Sydney premiere of Westwind: Djalu’s Legacy, in which Yolngu warrior and shaman Djalu Gurruwiwi must find a way to bring two worlds together to save his culture, with some help from global pop star Gotye. Antenna will also hold special programs and events such as ArtDocs, a collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Arts presenting documentaries by and about artists, Q&A’s with local and international filmmakers, and the annual DocTalk, Antenna’s full day industry event featuring discussions and master-classes about the art, craft and business of documentary filmmaking. The seventh edition of the Antenna Documentary Film Festival opens Tuesday 10 October in Sydney and runs until Sunday 15 October. For complete program information and to purchase tickets and passes, go to www.antennafestival.org FESTIVAL DETAILS Palace Verona – 17 Oxford Street, Paddington General Admission – Adult $19.50, Concession $17 |
The Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM), which will present its 20th annual edition this November 9 to 19, is proud to announce some of the high-profile filmmakers featured in its program as well as an exclusive retrospective devoted to Singaporean filmmaker Tan Pin Pin.
Big names in documentary
The Golden Leopard winner at this year’s Locarno Festival, Mrs. Fang by Wang Bing is a deeply metaphysical and political work that meticulously chronicles the slow death of an old woman in a Chinese village.
After screening at TIFF, Our People Will Be Healed, the 50th film by the incomparable Alanis Obomsawin, will lead viewers into a Cree school with an innovative teaching system. With her usual rigour and sensitivity, the filmmaker celebrates positive action being taken to build a better future for indigenous youth.
Shown in the official competition at the Venice Film Festival, EX LIBRIS — The New York Public Library by Frederick Wiseman goes inside a legendary institution. In a place that can seem like the last bastion of a dying form of social cohesion, debate and discussion are as freewheeling as ever. Wiseman latches onto that rich discourse, constructing a portrait of the United States and the issues it faces today.
Three years after the sudden death of Michael Glawogger, the director’s long-time editor decided to complete their final, tragically interrupted project. Monika Willi, who has also worked extensively with Michael Haneke, took over the incomplete film, Untitled. The finished film stands as a tribute to the late globe-trotting filmmaker, who had been making his most personal film – a work of remarkable openness to the endless diversity of the human experience.
Tan Pin Pin retrospective
A key figure in the Singaporean documentary community, for more than a decade Tan Pin Pin has been building an eclectic, multidisciplinary and essential body of work. Her films, most of which have never before been screened in Quebec, present a unique and necessary perspective on her country’s character and history.
Tan Pin Pin’s films transcend their local focus. Invoking both individual and collective memory through testimonials and archival materials, she succeeds in questioning the foundations of documentary filmmaking itself. Such is the inspiring project of a filmmaker who is creating a new way of envisioning political art.
Presales continue
Until midnight on September 17, early-bird passes are on sale for just $100 including taxes. The passes are good for all screenings (except certain special events). Box office: http://ridm.ca/en/box-office-and-venues-early-birds
Quebec’s only film festival dedicated to documentaries, the Montreal International Documentary Festival presents the best reality‐based films, including the works of established directors and new talents.
The 20th annual RIDM will take place from November 9 to 19, 2017.

IS THIS THE REAL LIFE? IS THIS JUST FANTASY? |
|
|
|
Yes, it is real life, or at least a good slice of it. Documentaries shine light to the uncharted and little known. They can be funny, forbidding, inspirational, informative, thoughtful, and eye opening. Regardless of the specific subject matter, all documentaries have one impressive thing in common, the fascinating truth. From the sweeping heights of skyscrapers to the deep blue sea, we’ve got documentaries about middle aged men in lycra, long lost siblings, the delightful world of NZ’s competitive poultry breeders, a beauty with brains, and the elusive art world. Get a glimpse inside a horror theme park (Spookers!), a brothel (The Pink House), and the fascinating and often confronting intricacies of prisons around the world (Chauka, Please Tell Us the Time; Prisoners and Pups). We have a wide breadth of fascinating factual films. Browse our full documentary slate and filter by the categories of your choosing. |
CLOSING NIGHT | GRACE JONES: BLOODLIGHT & BAMI |
|
We kick the fest off with our punk carnivale and close the curtains with a daring disco diva. Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami is the new documentary from director Sophie Fiennes (The Pervert’s Guide to Ideology) following the unconventional Jamaican-born model, singer, and New Wave icon. Filmed over the course of a decade, Jones allows Fiennes intimate access to her offstage persona, as well as dynamite performances filmed during a 2016 concert. We've nabbed this film straight from Toronto International Film Festival where it opened the doc competition. Don your finest and bring your dancing shoes as we end the fest with a closing night gala party for the ages. There'll be fine wine, finer company and guaranteed good times. Don’t miss this. |

On January 16,1979, the Shah of Iran Mohamad Reza Pahlavi, left the royal palace, the Peacock Throne and his beloved country Iran for the last time, commencing what became a 19-month odyssey into exile. He wondered hopelessly from Egypt to Morocco, Bahamas, Mexico, the U.S, then Panama and back again to Egypt where he died furtively at the age of 60. His death had profound consequences for the future of the Middle East and the world, yet the untold medical story of the last King of Iran has to date remained a puzzling mystery. By unraveling the secrecy surrounding this critical period of history, beginning from the onset of the Shah’s illness, to the diagnosis/misdiagnosis and maltreatment, “A Dying King” exposes the main causes of the Iranian Revolution, the pursuant 444 days hostage crisis, and the adversarial relations between the U.S and Iran.
