The Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF), North America’s leading animation film festival, is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for anyone with a great idea for an animated TV series. Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana, Canada’s premiere animation company and long-time OIAF partner, is offering a development deal, in addition to Toon Boom animation software, to the winner of Pitch THIS! at the event’s industry stream TAC (The Animation Conference), September 20—24, 2017.

“Once again, Nelvana is excited to participate in the Pitch THIS! program and help foster the next generation of creative talent in the animation community,” said Scott Dyer, President, Nelvana.  “Nurturing and supporting innovative ideas often brings creative gems to the forefront – we look forward to this year’s submissions.”

TAC provides a chance for new-comers and professionals to network and keep up with industry trends while having access to the most creative, original and innovative animation out there. Every year TAC presents Pitch THIS!, a contest where two creators get the chance to pitch their new project to the TAC audience.

Not only is there a development deal on the line, but the 2017 program has added a mentorship twist as well. This year, TEN PITCHES will be selected and the creators paired with a mentor who will help them develop their idea. This is a rare opportunity for folks to work closely with a seasoned industry professional, and receive feedback on their project.

All ten pitches will be presented on Wednesday, September 20 during TAC, where each contestant has only ten minutes to impress a small committee of experts. From this group, two lucky candidates will be selected to present their idea at the official Pitch THIS! event on Thursday, September 21 to a panel of broadcasters and the entire audience at TAC, an audience that includes over 300 potential buyers and financiers within the industry.

“The OIAF and Nelvana have a longstanding relationship of working together to foster the animation industry,” says Azarin Sohrabkhani, Director of Industry Programming for OIAF. "It's very exciting to be able to work together again this year to present this amazing opportunity for the animation community.”

Not only is Nelvana offering a development deal, but Toon Boom will award a licence for Harmony and Storyboard Pro with training to the winner.

Proposals should include:
• Project synopsis, including log line and character descriptions
• One episode synopsis
• Concept art
• Bios of key creators
• Content aimed at children ages 2—11
• Please note: no more than 2 submissions per production company
• We are accepting International submissions

Do you have what it takes? Send your Pitch THIS! proposals to:

The Red Cube and the White Piazza

The “Citadel of Cinema” at the Lido is completing its rebirth. The program which was launched after the annus horribilis in 2010, when the fragility and criticality which had accumulated over time reached a highpoint, is progressing in a systematic fashion.

The Red Cube sets the seal on this rebirth. And as such, it is a complement to the surrounding buildings, reminders of the decisive stages in the Festival’s history (the terrace of the Excelsior was the first Festival’s headquarters; the Palazzo del Cinema, constructed in 1937, was the first hall created for a film festival; today, the brand new Sala Darsena crowns the open-air arena which, in its time, was a symbol of the Festival’s openness to its public; the Casinò, which became a definitive Festival acquisition in 2000, symbolizes a new, programmatic relationship with the international press.

Thanks to the commitment of the Municipality of Venice, the large square in front of the Casinò as well as the Sala Grande have been completely renovated this year. Other resources will also be earmarked for the Casinò in the near future for further revamping and renovation.

Discovering the forgotten island

Adjacent to the “Citadel of Cinema”, separated only by a stretch of water, lies sleepy Lazzaretto Vecchio island and its abandoned historical buildings, which have been partially restored in recent years. What better opportunity for our ongoing commitment to the cutting-edge activities of Virtual Reality than to bring new life to these historical structures, in agreement with the Polo Museale Veneziano!

This is a courageous decision in many aspects; equally courageous is our decision to create a true Festival section dedicated to VR, with juries and awards. And, once again, an important moment in our history will enjoy its iconic location.

The five pillars of the Festival

The number of traditional sections in the Mostra, with minor variations, is geared to the size of the event as it has developed over time. Thus, as mentioned, a new section has been added, dedicated to Virtual Reality, and its specific needs. The “Venice Production Bridge” has proven to be a valuable complement to the film markets. The section “Classics” has, in itself, become a classic. “Il Cinema nel Giardino” confirms its role with its openness to genres and audiences. The recent developments confirm the level reached by Biennale College Cinema, which has now been enhanced with the “Virtual Reality” section. The Festival’s sections have already hosted new works by directors who have passed through of the College. And this year, we have introduced an additional “channel” for Italian directors.

True to our mission

We know that if the press acknowledges us as the preferred festival of people who want their works to be successful in the autumn award season, we owe it exclusively to the fact that we have always remained faithful to the principle of our independence and to the quality of the choices we make. Almost paradoxically, we continue to be a reference point for works which may not be destined for resounding box office success but which represent artistic and poetic moments worthy of attention and recognition. This is one of the essential functions of a festival that intends to maintain the world’s esteem.

Visits to the Great Mother

As we all know, the Film Festival was born as an extension of Biennale Arte. In recent years, something long desired has begun to occur: a growing number of filmmakers and journalists are coming and going between the Film Festival and Biennale Arte, which will remain open until November 26th at the Venice Giardini and the Arsenale.

Acknowledgments

Our thanks to the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism for its ongoing, vital support. We also thank the Municipality of Venice for its work on the Citadel of Cinema, which continues to improve its functioning and quality. Our thanks to the Veneto Region. Appreciation is also due to the offices of the European Commission for their help in a number of important sections of the College. We thank the various private and public entities which help restore the Classics. Our gratitude is extended to our sponsors and in particular to Jaeger-LeCoultre and Toyota Lexus. We are much obliged to Rai for its committed presence.

We thank the Director’s group of assistants and our gratitude also goes to the Festival’s director, Alberto Barbera.

We thank the Biennale in its entirety for the wonderful work they have done and which they prepare to do once more.

Ante scriptum

Two days ago, the Biennale Teatro program began. Under the new direction of Antonio Latella, it will concentrate (until August 12th) on the work of nine women directors and establish a successful collaboration between the festival and the College. This unique formula will see a large number of young people working with teachers on specific projects, many of which will be presented to the public.

Film Music Concerts: The Emperor’s new Clothes? Interesting times for soundtrack buffs! Ghent, Krakow, Malaga, Tenerife, Vienna, Prague... Film & media music events are popping up all around Europe. The biggest ones are based on concerts and claim to gain awareness for media music, develop new concert practices for orchestras, and bring new audiences to the ivory towers of high culture. But didn’t some wise film music critic tell us, that the best film music is the one that merges with the picture? Treat or threat: How far do concerts change the object of desire? The International Film Music Critics Association IFMCA meets the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik. With Eleni Mitsiaki (Kinetophone), David Serong (Cinema Musica), Jörg Gerle (filmdienst), talking to film music / concert composer, and mediamusic e.V. board member Gregor Schwellenbach.

In the martial arthouse movie TIGER GIRL, improvised dialogues collide with choreographed fighting scenes. What were the artistic challenges and how do audio post production and music composition differ from “classic” working processes? How was the collaboration of the post production department organised and how were impulses from shooting, editing, sound and music picked up? Manuel Meichsner (sound supervisor, sounddesigner), Valentin Finke (re-recording mixer, dialogue editor) and Golo Schulz (composer, producer) will reply to composer and mediamusic e.V. board member Andreas Grimm.

The Future of Music Formats on TV and Online will be discussed by Fiona Latten (Managing Editor at TVT.media) and the directors Kurt de Leijer and Matthew Millan. With ZDF@Bauhaus, TVT.media won last year's Prize for the SEE THE SOUND Best German Livemusic TV-Show. Kurt de Leijers TV format LeFtO – In Transit, where the viewers can discover the underground scenes of worldwide metropolises, will be screened at SEE THE SOUND, the film festival of SoundTrack_Cologne. Matthew Millans Stronger Than Bullets, a documentary about Libya's music scene during the civil war, will also be screened at SEE THE SOUND.

DIVERSE, DISTINCT, AND DARING:
SYDNEY LATIN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES PROGRAM!

SLAFF%20HEADER%282%29.jpg

From the wonderful and inspiring to the thought-provoking, say hola to the 12th annual Sydney Latin American Film Festival (SLAFF) this September (07-11). Returning to Dendy Opera Quays, the Festival will screen a specially curated program of captivating contemporary Latin American cinema: eight feature films, two documentaries, and seven shorts, along with vibrant opening and closing night parties, over five jam-packed days.

From stories of human resilience, to political turmoil and redemption, the 2017 program focusses on diversity and representation, providing engaging insight into the vast cross-section of Latin American cultures.

“Fifty percent of this year’s program comprises of female directors, and showcases who we are as a whole continent, with representation from Central and South America, and a special Caribbean spotlight. The program highlights the wonderful kaleidoscope that is the Latin world, bringing films from Cuba, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic to Sydney,” said Festival Programmer Lidia Luna.

The Festival opens with pre-screening drinks and Pablo’s Kitchen empanadas introducing the Australian premiere of On the Roof. The inspirational film follows three young dreamers who share their aspirations together on the rooftops of Havana every day, as they set up their own local business, and learn more about themselves than ever expected.

A spectacular Opening Night Fiesta kicks on after the screening, with Armandito and Trovason bringing their exuberant blend of Cuban rhythms, from Mambo to Rumba to Buena Vista Social Club, to the intimate space of The Basement.

Adriana’s Pact is Lissette Orozco’s extremely personal documentary on her aunt Adriana Rivas, and her involvement with the terrifying secret police of the Chilean Pinochet military dictatorship. Accused of the kidnapping, torture and murder of political opponents, Rivas is currently considered a fugitive by the Chilean Supreme Court and currently resides in Sydney and the NSW government facing mounting community pressure for Rivas’ extradition. The film follows Orozco’s journey as she unearths harsh truths about her beloved aunt.

Bad Influence, the debut feature film from Claudia Huaiquimilla (San Juan, La Noche Más Larga – SLAFF 2013) tackles the issues and struggles of the Indigenous Chilean Mapuche people. An outsider story set in the margins of society, the film follows a troubled petty criminal from Santiago, and a shy outsider from the Indigenous community who band together after the strange death of a Mapuche leader.

Not to be missed is Everything Else, a thought-provoking examination of solitude starring Oscar nominee Adriana Barraza (Babel, Amores Perros) as a reclusive bureaucrat spending her nights watching romance films with her beloved cat Manuelito. When her only companion dies, she is forced to reach out for any kind of human connection.

Elis is a captivating biopic of the life of iconic Brazilian singer Elis Regina. From her humble beginnings, to her rise to the international stage, to her tragic and untimely death, this engaging feature is a must-see for music lovers.

Sambá, nominated for Best International Narrative Feature at Tribeca Film Festival, is a gritty Dominican sports drama following the stoic-faced hero Cisco, who resorts to street fighting for cash after returning home to the Dominican Republic after 15 years in US prison. Teaming up with washed up former pro boxer Nichi, the two set off to fight their way to personal redemption.

Other festival highlights include Koblic, the blood-pumping story of a Navy pilot who must make an agonizing decision upon discovering his aircraft will be used to execute political prisoners; When the Guns Go Silent, a gripping documentary following Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC), the world’s oldest guerilla army, as they negotiate peace with the Colombian government after a 50 year struggle; and El Amparo, which follows two fishermen who must fight for their innocence after returning home from a trip in which 14 men were killed by military gunfire.

Closing the festival is Bad Lucky Goat, the hilarious story of two incompatible siblings who accidentally kill a bearded goat with their father’s truck. Set against the lush green backdrop the Colombian Caribbean, the squabbling duo must embark on a journey around the island together, visiting rastafari drum makers, pawn shops, and witch doctors along the way, as they search for a way to hide the accident.

Pre-screening drinks and a special performance by Errol H Renaud, bringing his exotic Caribbean beats spiced with soca, reggae and conscious lyricism, will wrap the Festival for another great year.

Everything Else, Bad Influence, El Amparo, and Sambá will be competing for the Jury Award for Best Feature Film cash prize, presided over by film programmer Paul Struthers, producer Jonathan Page and filmmaker Daz Chandler.

The 12th Sydney Latin American Film Festival will take place at Dendy Opera Quays cinemas from Thursday 7 September – Monday 11 September 2017 andCasula Powerhouse Arts Centre on Sunday 24 September, screening the very best in award-winning Latin American cinema.

Owner and Director,
Telluride Wine Fest

Speaker: CANNABIS AT FESTIVALS: THE 411 ON 420

Under the direction of Laurel Robinson, the mission of the Telluride Wine Festival is ambitious and far-reaching: to stimulate the local economy, educate attendees about some of the finer things in life, and donate a large portion of event proceeds to support the Telluride region’s food-producing community.

Having once been a caterer, a chef and nutritionist was Laurel’s training ground for running a food-based event. She is a production farmer that makes her own cheese and grows much of her own food. She has traveled extensively, seeking out culinary arts and techniques in hotbeds of gastronomy like France and Italy. Laurel was even a commercial fisherman in Alaska.

MEET THE DIRECTORS

Alberto Brabera, Director of the 74th Venice International Film Festival

a752cb5c85fa7474c0b2ec87c8069405_400x400.jpeg
In the light of the latest developments in the revolution that is changing the audiovisual experience as conceived since the invention of the cinematograph, one might respectfully toy with Hegel's maxim, according to which everything that is rational is real, updating it to everything that is virtual is real. How else might we approach a phenomenon that until just a few months ago was considered little more than the latest technological gimmick, but that now seems destined to become one of the most colossal investments to which the cultural industry will devote a significant share of its future?
When, early this year, we decided to hesitate no longer and take a risk by dedicating a workshop of the Biennale College Cinema, as well as a totally new competition, to the products of Virtual Reality (more synthetically, VR), we never imagined that we would receive more than one hundred proposals for short films, features, and installations (interactive and not). From these we have chosen 22 titles, to be submitted to the evaluation of an international jury and to viewers who will enter the new specially-equipped space on the island of Lazzaretto Vecchio, a short distance from the Lido di Venezia.    MORE

New developments in 2017!

paolo-baratta.jpg

Paolo Baratta: President of the Biennale di Venezia

Hi Film Festivals readers

I was wondering if you might be interested in having a read of a small film festival I've put together for this weekend in London?

My name is Mariah Mathew and I’ve organized Little Wing Film Festival in London that's screening films by first-time filmmakers, including students, recent grads, and filmmakers from non-academic routes. The idea was that I wanted to be able to reward these new creatives in more ways than "exposure" as they're beginning their careers, and so I've gathered a heap of sponsored prizes to award the winners in a way that will help facilitate their next project. The idea was that I wanted to combat the expectation of unpaid work when you're trying to get your foot in the door.

The festival runs from September 1st to 3rd at The Hen and Chickens Theatre in Islington, and we’re screening a mix of shorts and features, all by very talented up-and-coming filmmakers. Tickets are £6 for each screening, and there will be a 4-hour workshop with Nicola Peluso, one of the brains behind wearefilmclub, for £15, that focuses on filmmaking on a microbudget. I wanted to keep it affordable and accessible to anyone with an interest in supporting independent filmmakers and actioning against unpaid work. It's small and super grass roots, with free popcorn to boot.

There’s an option to leave constructive comments and compliments that will be delivered to each filmmaker, if the audience feels moved to write something. This stems from the idea that it can be arduous, with exhausting setbacks, when trying to get your work recognized in the beginning of your creative career, and a kind word, particularly from a stranger, can be immensely appreciated. I want to create a space that is approachable and easy-going, where young creatives can feel supported and share opportunities, and we can work towards changing attitudes around the acceptability of unpaid work.

I, myself, am a recent graduate and I started this with £200 saved from bartending. It’s come along really well, and I see so much potential in it to grow, because the call for this kind of support from young creatives is loud, as i'm sure you're aware.

I believe this is something that not only is sharing great films with the public for an entertaining weekend, but it’s a way of consuming films sustainably. I want to encourage the community to support events that pay their artists, in the same way you’d try to sustainably shop for clothes or food. I want this to be an example to larger companies and events that, if a small festival like this can give back to their artists, than they certainly can.

I was hoping this might be something you'd be interested in sharing online? Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you'd like to review this lil' festival with a big heart, or for some free tickets for your audience.

If there's more information I can give you, please let me know and i'll help however I can.

Thank you for your time, I really appreciate it.

Mariah

THE TRACKER

1.100816.jpg

"The Tracker is one of those rare films that deserves to be called haunting." (Roger Ebert)

There are four of them making their way through the wild country, tracking relentlessly. It is 1922. In charge is the Fanatic, cold, ruthless, calculating but complex. The second of the three whites is the Follower, a greenhorn, new to the outback. And there is the Veteran, a thinker rather than a doer. But the real leader, whether the others know it or not, is the Tracker himself, a mysterious figure who clearly isn't who he seems.

The Tracker makes it way to the big screen once again in commeration of its 15th year anniversary. The film marks the beginning of a remarkable creative partnership between David Gulpilil and experiemental visionary director Rolf de Heer, resulting in the award-winning Ten Canoes and Charlie's Country. Don't miss this special screening Sun 15 Oct, 3:45pm.

GUILTY

guilty.165049.jpg

Guilty highlights the last 72 hours of the convicted Myuran Sukumaran’s life and the paintings he created during that time.

The film blends narrative sequences with archival and documentary material to create a deeply personal story about grief, art and redemption.

As the fixed date of death looms, the clinical brutality of capital punishment is contrasted with the optimism of Myuran’s art.

The Japanese experimental erotic cinema which flourished in the 70s and 80s is back and ready to provoke again. The legendary Nikkatsu Studio is making their Roman Porno comeback with the best contemporary independent filmmakers on board.

When the television effectively pulled the Japanese audiences out of movie theaters in the 1970s, many film studios found themselves on the verge of bankruptcy. The only hope for them was to switch to a steamy content for adults only. The production of soft pornography bloomed - the so-called "pink films," the pinku eiga, ended up on the must-do lists of the majority of big film companies.

The Nikkatsu cult series, Roman Porno, was a special treat on the market. The label aimed to create a high quality erotic movies with strong artistic values but still following the rules of the genre: sex or nudity scenes every 10 minutes, cheap and fast production process and a fancy and catchy title. Roman Porno has become a training ground for young filmmakers, ready to experiment and break filmmaking boundaries. Obligatory sex scenes were often embellished with extraordinary visuals, subtle (or not so much) political content, disturbing visions and extravagant editing.

The golden times of softcore movies distributed in cinema theatres ended with VHS and online porn era, but as the traditional audience evaporated, a new wave of cinephile interest in the genre started to rise. Rare, kinky, excessive pinku was a perfect stock for new generations of explorers and festivalgoers, always on the lookout for bizarre and exciting content.

The 45th anniversary of the launch of Roman Porno series became a great opportunity for the renewal of the genre: in 2016 Nikkatsu invited five stars of independent cinema to reinvent soft-core for contemporary audience. The basic rules remained unchanged, but the studio decided to address the new series to a young public, taking into serious consideration the female viewers as well. The results are thrilling. Against the backdrop of "polite" Japanese mainstream cinema Roman Porno yet again proved to be an interesting way not only to excite, but also to show contemporary society in a unique way.

Last year Five Flavours hosted a Polish premiere of the first film of the series, "Antiporno" by Sion Sono. The program of the 11th edition of the festival will showcase two of the latest titles from the Roman Porno Reboot along with two classic films which were a direct inspiration for them.

NIGHT OF THE FELINES (DIR. NOBORU TANAKA, JAPAN 1972)

Frivolous, candy-coloured sex-comedy with a melancholic backdrop. Rock-and-roll and jazzy rhythms are guiding the viewer through the vivid world of the 70s, into the stories of women working in the bathhouse converted into a public house. The film shows a kaleidoscope of extravagant client's cravings as well as the prose of life in the erotic industry. But its true subject is the deep, sisterly bond between three heroines.

DAWN OF THE FELINES (DIR. KAZUYA SHIRAISHI, JAPAN 2017)

Neons of Tokyo, cramped rooms of nightclubs and a panorama of male fantasies depicted from the perspective of three women working in the erotic industry. Captivating images of bursting city, brilliant psychological study of emotions and an up-front diagnosis of the Japanese society in the Internet dating era.

LOVERS ARE WET (DIR. TATSUMI KUMASHIRO, JAPAN 1973)

One of the most acknowledged titles from the Roman Porno archives: a powerful story of an impulsive loner who returns to his hometown hiding a dark secret. A violent and disturbing study of frustration, loneliness and intricate erotic relationships captured in mesmerising shots that have become an important iconic input to the history of Japanese cinema.

WET WOMEN IN THE WIND (DIR. AKIHIKO SHIOTA, JAPAN 2016)

An attractive playwright renounces all relationships with women and tries to withdraw into solitude. That’s not an easy task, as he is spotted on his way by a provocative, unpredictable girl, determined to undermine his pledges. A hunter becomes a prey, gender roles are shifted and breasts are exposed. The director teases the audience with quirky plot twists and skillfully plays with the genre conventions, creating a vivid, ironic and truly steamy tragicomedy.
